Edexcel IGCSE Further Pure Maths 4PM1 Home Tutor in Dubai

Most families looking for an Edexcel IGCSE Further Pure Maths 4PM1 home tutor in Dubai have a candidate who understands the mathematics and is still not getting the marks. That gap is almost always technique rather than knowledge: what show that demands, what hence forbids, what exact form means, and which results the formula sheet does not give you. This page works through all of it, then counts a 4PM1 year backwards in forty weeks and states plainly how the lessons are delivered.

  • Command terms taught explicitly, with the mark each one awards named
  • Answers checked for exact form before the arithmetic is even looked at
  • A written forty-week plan with checkpoints, not an open-ended booking
  • A free first hour spent marking one real 4PM1 question properly

Why a competent 4PM1 candidate still loses marks

There is a particular kind of 4PM1 script that arrives again and again. The mathematics is right. The candidate has understood integration, can handle an identity, knows their series formulae. The raw mark is two grades below what the parent expected. Nothing in that script is a knowledge gap. What it contains instead is a dozen small surrenders: a show that answered by working backwards, a hence ignored, an exact value given as a decimal, a sketch with no labelled intercepts, a stationary point found but never classified.

This matters more in 4PM1 than in a mainstream maths IGCSE because of how the papers are built. Questions come in multiple parts where later parts depend on earlier ones, and the command term at the start of each part is an instruction about method, not a stylistic preference. A candidate who treats hence as a connective rather than a requirement produces a correct answer by an unacceptable route and collects a fraction of the available marks. Examiners mark the route.

The second structural feature is exact form. 4PM1 regularly asks for an answer in terms of surds, pi or a logarithm, and a candidate who reaches for a decimal has thrown the mark away at the final line of otherwise perfect work. This is not a hard skill. It is an unlearned one, because four years of calculator-permitted 4MA1 trained the candidate to produce a number and stop. Reversing that habit is three sessions of work with a measurable return.

The third feature is the architecture of the questions themselves. 4PM1 problems arrive in sequences where part (a) establishes something, part (b) uses it and part (c) applies the result somewhere new. Thirty seconds spent reading the whole question before writing anything in part (a) reveals what form the first answer needs to be in, which frequently saves a candidate from computing a decimal and then discovering that part (b) wanted the exact surd. Candidates who treat each part separately do more work for fewer marks.

So the honest diagnosis of a struggling 4PM1 candidate starts with a marked script and a classification, not with a topic list. Marks lost to content gaps need teaching. Marks lost to command terms, exact form, unstated conclusions and sketch requirements need habit change, which is faster and cheaper. A tutor who responds to a disappointing mock by proposing to reteach the syllabus has not looked at why the marks went.

On delivery, this page is direct rather than coy. Lessons for Dubai families are one-to-one over live video, on Gulf Standard Time, with slots moved to post-Iftar timing through Ramadan. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai or anywhere else in the UAE; home visits are a service it runs only in India. The phrase in this page's address is what parents search, and it deserves a straight answer rather than a quiet substitution later in the process.

At a glance

  • Command terms in 4PM1 are instructions about method, not stylistic variation
  • Later parts of a question depend on earlier ones; hence is a requirement
  • Exact form means surds, pi or logarithms, not a rounded decimal
  • The formula sheet is narrower than candidates assume; check the current one
  • A sketch earns marks for its labelled features, not for its neatness
  • Delivery to Dubai is online; home visits are an India-only service

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

4PM1 only makes sense beside the alternatives, and Dubai families are often choosing between three routes without being told that a choice exists. These are the four relevant qualifications.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A, Higher tier (4MA1)

The mainstream qualification almost every 4PM1 candidate sits alongside. It is calculator-permitted throughout and generous about method, which is precisely why it trains habits that cost marks at Further Pure level. A candidate arriving from 4MA1 has to unlearn the reflex of producing a number and stopping.

Dubai centres fix the 4MA1 tier at entry, and a 4PM1 candidate should be on Higher and performing at the top of it. Ask the maths department for the 4MA1 tier and their 4PM1 view in one conversation. A candidate who needs sustained effort to hold a Higher grade will find an eleventh subject takes the hours that grade depends on.

IGCSE+Ages 15-16 · Year 11, in addition to 4MA1

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Further Pure Mathematics (4PM1)

Untiered, commonly two equally weighted written papers, covering logarithms and indices, quadratics, identities and inequalities, graphs, series, the binomial series, vectors, coordinate geometry, calculus and trigonometry in radians. Its distinguishing feature in practice is the command-term discipline the papers expect. Confirm assessment detail on qualifications.pearson.com for your centre's specification version.

A minority of Dubai schools teach it, usually larger British-curriculum centres with an International A Level sixth form. Where it is not taught, confirm in writing that the centre will enter an untaught candidate before committing, and ask for the entry deadline in the same message. Assuming entry is a formality has cost Dubai families whole academic years.

IGCSE+Ages 15-16 · Year 11, in addition to a mainstream maths IGCSE

Cambridge IGCSE Additional Mathematics (0606)

Cambridge's equivalent extension qualification, covering comparable ground including calculus, radians and series. It is a genuine alternative rather than an inferior one, and which of the two a candidate sits is usually decided by whichever board their school already uses for mainstream maths rather than by any pedagogical comparison.

Dubai is unusual in having strong provision for both boards, so a family moving school mid-course can find themselves switching extension qualification as well. The content overlap is substantial but the command-term conventions and the formula sheets differ, so a mid-course switch needs the technique work redone even when the mathematics transfers cleanly.

IALAges 16-18 · Years 12-13

Pearson Edexcel International A Level Mathematics

Where the command-term discipline built at 4PM1 pays off immediately. A Level pure papers use the same vocabulary with higher stakes: show that, hence, deduce, in exact form. A candidate who learned at sixteen that these words are instructions arrives in Year 12 already writing acceptable answers, which is a larger advantage than the content head start.

Dubai sixth forms run either the modular International A Level or the linear UK specification. The modular route brings the first external assessment forward, which rewards a candidate whose written technique is already sound and punishes one who planned to develop it during the year.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The command terms below are the vocabulary 4PM1 papers use to tell a candidate what method is acceptable. Each is listed with what it demands and the characteristic way a mark is lost. Check the current wording conventions in the Pearson specification and examiner reports.

Show that

Method is prescribed

The answer is given, so the marks are entirely for the route to it. The fatal error is starting from the given result and working back to the starting point, which demonstrates nothing. Start from what the question supplies and arrive at the stated answer, with every step on the page.

Prove

Argument must be general

Stronger than show that: the statement must hold generally, so a worked example or a substituted value is not a proof. Candidates who verify an identity at one value have confirmed a coincidence. The method is to transform one side towards the other, never both at once.

Hence

Method is constrained

An instruction to use the result just obtained. A correct answer reached by an independent method collects almost nothing, because the examinable skill was the connection. The habit to build is reading the whole question before part (a) so the dependency is visible from the start.

Hence or otherwise

Method is free, but one route is shorter

Permission to use another approach, and a strong hint that the previous result makes the work quicker. Candidates who ignore the hint usually arrive at the answer with twice the algebra and run out of time later in the paper rather than losing marks here.

Deduce

No new calculation expected

A conclusion to be drawn from work already done, often with no further computation at all. Candidates who start a fresh calculation have misread the task and spend minutes they do not have. The marks are for the stated inference and the reason behind it.

Find the exact value

Decimals score nothing

The answer must be left in terms of surds, pi, a fraction or a logarithm. A rounded decimal at the end of perfect working loses the final mark. This is the most mechanical of all the command terms to fix and among the most commonly surrendered.

Sketch

Features, not accuracy

A freehand curve whose marks come from labelled intercepts, asymptotes, turning points and correct general shape. A beautifully drawn curve with nothing labelled earns less than a rough one that names its features. Axes and scale conventions matter; artistic quality does not.

Write in the form

The form is the answer

Typically completing the square or expressing something as a single fraction or a specified structure. The marks are for arriving at exactly the requested form, so an equivalent expression in a different arrangement is incomplete. Candidates lose these marks by stopping one rearrangement early.

Determine the nature of

A conclusion must be stated

Usually applied to stationary points. Finding the second derivative is not the answer; saying which kind of point it is, and why the sign of the second derivative shows that, is the answer. Computing without concluding is the single most widespread presentation loss in the subject.

Solve

All solutions, in the given range

Deceptively simple. Trigonometric equations in radians have multiple solutions within a stated interval, and candidates routinely give one. Quadratic and rational inequalities need the full solution set in correct notation, which is a second place the same instruction is under-answered.

Use algebra to show

Graphical or numerical methods are excluded

An explicit instruction that a calculator solution or a graph will not be accepted. A candidate who produces the right numbers from the machine has answered a different question. The route must be algebraic and visible on the page.

Verify

Substitution is permitted here

The one place where substituting a value is the intended method, which is why candidates who have been trained out of it sometimes over-complicate. Verifying a given solution satisfies an equation is exactly that: substitute, evaluate both sides, state that they agree.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three session shapes, chosen from what a marked script shows rather than from a menu. The first one is often the only one a technically competent candidate needs.

Technique audit and rebuild

For the candidate whose mathematics is sound and whose marks are not. One marked paper is classified by cause, and then sessions work through the command terms systematically: show that answered forwards, hence respected, exact form held to the final line, conclusions stated. Measured against a second marked paper rather than asserted.

  • Losses separated into technique, content, timing and arithmetic
  • One command term per session, drilled on past questions
  • Every answer checked for form before the arithmetic is looked at
  • A second marked paper as the test of whether it worked

Forty-week plan with checkpoints

The full-course option, counted backwards from the series. Content in the autumn and early spring, technique woven through from the start rather than bolted on at the end, and timed papers from roughly week thirty. Written down before the first session, with named checkpoints where the plan can be changed or stopped.

  • A written schedule across all ten content areas
  • Command-term work from week one, not week thirty
  • Checkpoints at weeks twelve, twenty-four and thirty-two
  • An honest withdrawal option at each checkpoint

Timed paper block

The final stretch. Full papers under real timing, marked line by line with the cause of every lost mark named, and a question-order strategy built from the candidate's own pattern. No new content is introduced, because at this point it displaces practice that would have scored better.

  • Both papers in rotation under genuine timing
  • Marking returned with the cause of each loss classified
  • Exact-form and command-term errors tracked as a running count
  • New content declined in the final fortnight

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

What a home tutor means for 4PM1, and what is actually delivered

The phrase in this page's address is what Dubai parents type, so it deserves an answer rather than a redirect. What families mean by a home tutor is one-to-one attention on their own child's work, at a time that survives the school run, without a class of twenty-five. All of that is deliverable over video. What is not deliverable is somebody arriving at the door, and IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai or anywhere else in the UAE. Home visits are a service it runs only in India.

For 4PM1 specifically this costs a family less than it would in almost any other subject. There is nothing physical to handle, no practical component, no equipment. What the work needs is a shared surface on which the candidate writes and the tutor watches each line appear. On an identity proof, that is better than sitting beside somebody, because the tutor can see the exact move where the argument broke and intervene there instead of reading a finished attempt and reconstructing what happened.

The in-home market rate in Dubai runs roughly AED 180 to AED 500 an hour against roughly AED 150 to AED 300 for a qualified online subject tutor, read from published provider pages and Bestimate's Dubai 2026 rate table in October 2026. Those are market figures belonging to the providers named. The gap is largely the journey, and on a two-year arrangement with a weekly session it is a substantial sum paid for driving rather than teaching.

The more important cost of insisting on a visit is availability. 4PM1 is a minority entry in Dubai, and a tutor who teaches it regularly is a narrow specialism inside a narrow specialism. Filtering that small pool further by who will drive to Al Twar or International Media Production Zone on a weekday evening leaves very little. The comparison table below prices both formats honestly, including the two rows where a visit genuinely wins.

02

Command terms: the vocabulary that decides whether the method counts

4PM1 papers give instructions in a fixed vocabulary, and candidates who read that vocabulary as ordinary English lose marks they cannot see going. Show that means the answer is supplied and the entire credit lies in the route, so working backwards from the given result demonstrates nothing. Prove is stronger still: the statement must hold generally, which rules out verifying it at a convenient value. Hence constrains the method to the result just obtained, so an independent route scores almost nothing.

Three more carry the same weight. Deduce asks for a conclusion from work already done, usually with no new calculation, and a candidate who launches into fresh algebra has misread the task and lost time they will need later. Use algebra to show explicitly excludes a graphical or calculator solution. Find the exact value requires surds, pi, a fraction or a logarithm, and a decimal at the end of perfect work forfeits the final mark.

Two are commonly over-read rather than under-read. Hence or otherwise permits another method, and candidates who treat it as strictly as hence sometimes abandon a perfectly acceptable approach. Verify is the one place where substitution is the intended method, and candidates trained out of substitution occasionally construct an unnecessary general argument. Reading the term precisely is as important as respecting it.

None of this is difficult content, which is exactly why it is worth paid hours. A candidate can be taught the full command vocabulary in two sessions and then needs drilled practice on past questions until reading the term first becomes automatic. The measurable result is a mark gain on material the candidate already knew, which is the cheapest grade movement available in the subject. Check the current conventions in the Pearson specification and examiner reports rather than in a revision guide.

03

The anatomy of a 4PM1 question: why part (c) depends on part (a)

4PM1 questions are built as sequences. Part (a) establishes something, part (b) uses it, part (c) applies the result to a new situation. That architecture is deliberate and it is where a significant share of the marks live, because the examinable skill in the later parts is the connection rather than the computation. A candidate who treats each part as a separate question is doing more work for fewer marks, and frequently running out of time in the last third of the paper.

The behavioural fix is to read the entire question before writing anything in part (a). Thirty seconds of reading reveals the dependency, which in turn reveals what form the part (a) answer needs to be in. A candidate who computes part (a) to a decimal and then finds part (b) requires the exact surd has to redo work they already did. A candidate who saw the dependency keeps the exact form and part (b) takes a line.

The second consequence is about recovery. Because later parts depend on earlier ones, a candidate who cannot complete part (a) often assumes the rest of the question is closed to them. It usually is not. Where show that supplies the result in part (a), that result can be quoted and used in part (b) even if the candidate could not derive it, and the marks for part (b) remain fully available. Candidates who do not know this leave whole questions blank unnecessarily.

The third is error propagation, which cuts the other way. A slip in part (a) that is carried forward is usually treated more kindly than a fresh error, but only if the working is visible enough for an examiner to follow the consequence. A candidate who shows the method gets the benefit; one who produced part (a) with calculator arithmetic and no method has nothing for an examiner to follow. Method marks are the insurance policy on the rest of the question.

04

Exact form: the marks a calculator quietly destroys

Four years of calculator-permitted mainstream maths trains a candidate to finish by producing a number. 4PM1 frequently wants something else: an answer in terms of a surd, a multiple of pi, an exact fraction or a logarithm. The instruction is explicit in the question, the mark is awarded only for the exact form, and a decimal at the end of flawless working forfeits it. This is the most mechanical loss in the subject and the easiest to remove.

The habit to build is checking the required form before starting the arithmetic, not after finishing it. A candidate who reads find the exact value and immediately notes that nothing will be rounded works differently from the first line: surds are kept as surds, pi is carried symbolically, and the calculator is used for structure rather than for evaluation. Retrofitting an exact answer from a decimal is often impossible, which is why the check belongs at the start.

Radian work makes this sharper. Arc length and sector area in radians produce answers that are naturally multiples of pi, and a candidate who converts to a decimal has both lost the exact-form mark and obscured whether their method was right. Trigonometric values at standard angles are also exact: a candidate who knows the common surd values does not need the calculator at all for them, which is faster as well as more accurate.

There is a related loss worth naming in the same breath. Where a question does permit a rounded answer, it states the accuracy, and candidates who round to a different precision lose the accuracy mark. So the discipline is symmetrical: read what form is wanted, exact or rounded, and to what precision, before any computation. One session establishes the rule and two marked papers confirm whether it has stuck.

05

The formula sheet against the results you have to know

Pearson supplies a formulae sheet with the 4PM1 papers, and candidates consistently believe it contains more than it does. The predictable consequence is a question abandoned because a needed result was not on the sheet and was never memorised. The useful exercise, early in the course, is to download the current sheet for the specification version the centre teaches and build a memorisation list from what is absent rather than from a revision guide written for a different qualification.

The results that most often need to be known rather than looked up are the ones candidates assume are provided: the standard derivatives and the reverse process for integration, the exact trigonometric values at common angles, the laws of logarithms, the conditions under which a geometric series has a sum to infinity, and the relationship between radians and degrees. None is hard to retain. All of them stall a question completely when they are missing.

There is a second category worth distinguishing: results a candidate should be able to recover rather than recall. The quadratic formula can be derived by completing the square. Arc length and sector area follow from the definition of a radian. A candidate who can rebuild a result from a definition has a safety net that pure memorisation does not provide, and the rebuilding takes less exam time than most candidates expect.

The practical output of this section is a one-page document the candidate makes themselves in the first month of the course: what the sheet gives, what must be memorised, and what can be recovered from a definition. Making it is a tutoring session with real value, because the act of sorting results into those three categories is itself revision, and the page then serves as the spine of the final fortnight's work.

06

Sketching as an examinable skill rather than a decoration

Candidates treat sketch as an invitation to draw carefully and then wonder why a neat curve scored two marks out of four. Sketch marks are awarded for features: the general shape, the intercepts with both axes, any asymptotes, the coordinates of turning points, and behaviour at the extremes. A rough freehand curve with all of those labelled outscores an immaculate one with none of them. Artistic quality is not assessed anywhere in the specification.

The practical method is to decide the features before the pencil moves. Where does the curve cross the axes, and are those coordinates exact. Are there values the function cannot take, which gives asymptotes. Does differentiation give turning points worth labelling. What happens for large positive and large negative inputs. A candidate who answers those four questions first produces a sketch whose marks are already secured, and the drawing itself takes twenty seconds.

Sketches also earn their place as working rather than as answers. A sketch before a trigonometric equation shows how many solutions lie in the given interval, which is the loss candidates most often take on solve questions in radians. A sketch before an area calculation predicts the sign of the result, so a negative area is noticed rather than reported. Drawing in order to think is a different habit from drawing because the question said sketch.

There is a Dubai-specific wrinkle. Candidates working on a tablet or using graphing software at home sometimes arrive in the exam without the muscle memory for a quick axes-and-shape sketch on paper under time pressure. The remedy is unglamorous: sketch on paper during sessions, by hand, including in sessions delivered over video, with the page held up or photographed rather than drawn in an application.

07

A 4PM1 year counted backwards in forty weeks

Nobody in this market publishes a plan, and the absence is strange given that every family asks for one. Working backwards from a series rather than forwards from today is what turns intention into a schedule. Pearson offers International GCSE in May/June and November, and the published reference points include a November 2026 final timetable running from late October to 19 November 2026 and November 2025 results reaching students on 22 January 2026. Confirm every date against the live official timetable.

The first structural decision is that technique work starts in week one rather than week thirty. The conventional sequence covers content all year and then adds exam technique in a panic at the end, which guarantees that a year of practice embedded the wrong habits. Command terms, exact form and conclusion statements cost nothing to teach alongside content and everything to retrofit afterwards. A candidate who has written forwards show that answers since October does not have to unlearn anything in April.

The second is that the genuinely new material is scheduled early. Integration, radians and the binomial series have no 4MA1 foundation, so they need the most time and the most spaced revisiting. Putting them in the autumn means the school covers them again later for nothing, and it means a candidate who is going to struggle discovers it in November rather than in March, when withdrawing is still a reasonable decision.

The third is checkpoints with a real withdrawal option. At weeks twelve, twenty-four and thirty-two the family and the tutor look at marked evidence and decide honestly whether to continue. A plan without those points becomes a commitment nobody can revisit, and for an untiered eleventh subject that is how a candidate ends up sitting a paper they should not have been entered for. The table sets the schedule out.

Reading a 4PM1 mock properly: what the raw mark hides

A raw mock mark is the least informative number in the whole process, and families make decisions on it constantly. Two candidates scoring identically can be in completely different positions. One lost marks across every question to command terms, exact form and unstated conclusions, which is a fortnight of work. The other understood four topics and not the other six, which is a term. The mark cannot distinguish them. Only a classification of the losses can.

The classification that works has four categories. Technique: the mathematics was right and the presentation forfeited the mark. Content: the candidate did not know how to proceed. Arithmetic or algebraic slips: the method was right and the execution failed. Timing: the question was not attempted. Marking a script into those four buckets takes about twenty minutes and tells a family more than any amount of discussion about what the candidate finds hard.

The counts then drive the plan and the review that follows it. If technique accounted for most of the loss, the next marked paper should show that count falling sharply, and if it does not the intervention was wrong. If content accounted for most of it, the right response is a topic schedule rather than technique drilling. Tracking the technique count as a running figure across three or four papers is the clearest progress measure available in this subject.

There is one more thing a mock reveals that the mark conceals: where in the paper the losses sit. Marks lost in the final third are usually a timing symptom with an upstream cause, since a candidate who writes method does not have to re-derive under pressure. Marks lost evenly throughout point to technique. Marks clustered in two topics point to content. Position in the paper is diagnostic, and almost nobody looks at it.

09

An eleventh subject in a Dubai timetable: the honest test

Every Dubai private school teaches Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies alongside its licensed international curriculum, and KHDA requires those subjects whatever curriculum the school runs, with the requirements to be implemented by the start of the 2025-26 academic year or April 2026 for schools whose year begins in April. Instructional time is calculated on a forty-minute lesson unit, and separate classes are mandated for Arab and non-Arab groups in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies.

That is real timetable load, and it sits on top of nine or ten option and core subjects. A candidate considering 4PM1 is proposing an eleventh commitment, taught either in a set, in an enrichment club, or entirely outside school. The arithmetic deserves to be done honestly before the entry is made. Two sessions a week plus independent problem work, for a candidate who already has four hours of mandatory subjects and a long commute, is a different proposition from the same plan for a candidate with a short school day.

The test worth applying is not whether the candidate wants to do it. It is whether the three subjects that will decide their sixth-form offer are already secure. A candidate carrying a 4PM1 workload while their mainstream maths, physics or chemistry grade is still in doubt has allocated their year badly, and the likely outcome is several mediocre grades where there could have been three strong ones and no eleventh subject at all.

Where the answer is yes, the Dubai calendar then shapes the plan. Ramadan shifts productive study to after Iftar, so sessions move to post-Iftar slots and the problem sets issued in those weeks are shorter and more specific. The long summer is the other structural feature: a candidate who stops entirely for ten weeks loses most of the integration fluency they built, which is why a reduced summer schedule is worth more than a complete break for this subject in particular.

10

How 4PM1 sessions actually run for Dubai families

Sessions are one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, and they are longer than a typical tutoring hour because Further Pure work does not achieve much in forty minutes. Ninety minutes is the usual shape: a marked question returned and discussed, new work taught, and then the candidate attempting problems while the tutor watches each line appear and intervenes at the step where something goes wrong rather than at the end of a finished attempt.

Writing happens on paper or on a shared digital surface, and for sketches it happens on paper deliberately, held up or photographed, because a candidate who only ever draws in an application arrives in the examination without the muscle memory for a quick hand sketch under pressure. Scripts and papers are uploaded between sessions and returned with the cause of every lost mark classified rather than simply ticked or crossed.

Scheduling is built around the Dubai week. Slots start late enough to clear the school run, move to post-Iftar timing through Ramadan, and follow a family that travels over the summer, which matters for a subject whose fluency decays over a long break. Families in communities with long commutes, such as International Media Production Zone or Al Twar, almost always settle on a single longer weekend session rather than two weekday ones.

IB Gram is an independent tutor-matching platform. It holds no approval, accreditation or licence from KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, MoHRE, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson, operates no office or centre in the UAE, and promises no grade. It does not produce assessed work for any candidate and does not reproduce or distribute Pearson specifications, past papers or mark schemes; those are on qualifications.pearson.com and are properly obtained through the school.

Where we tutor

Dubai communities and the session shape that works there

4PM1 needs uninterrupted stretches rather than short bursts, so where a family lives and how long the school day runs changes what a sensible session looks like. These are the communities we hear from.

Al Barsha 1 and Umm Al Sheif

Short commutes to several large British-curriculum schools, so a candidate is home early enough for a ninety-minute session on a weekday. That matters for Further Pure work, which rarely achieves anything useful in under an hour.

Jumeirah Park and Jumeirah Heights

Villa communities with quiet study space and schools close by. The practical constraint here is a crowded extracurricular calendar rather than the commute, so a protected weekend slot usually outlasts a weekday one through the spring term.

Dubai Science Park and Arjan

Dense mid-rise living beside a growing school cluster, few of which run a Further Pure set. Enquiries from here are mostly about covering the syllabus outside the timetable, which needs a written coverage plan before any money changes hands.

Nad Al Hamar and Al Rashidiya

Older established districts with short runs to schools in Garhoud and Festival City. Candidates here often sit large subject counts, so the realistic question is whether an eleventh subject fits rather than how to teach it.

International Media Production Zone

A self-contained community some distance from the main school clusters, with long journeys at both ends of the day. Later starts work better, and a single longer session each week beats two short ones that both arrive after a tired commute.

Jebel Ali Village and Discovery Gardens

Long-established communities on the western side with their own schools and earlier finishing activities, so sessions can begin sooner. Quiet study space is generally available, which makes timed full-paper practice at home realistic.

Al Twar and Muhaisnah

Large eastern cohorts with a mixed curriculum picture and a significant cross-city commute to the British-curriculum centres that teach 4PM1. Weekend sessions dominate here for exactly that reason.

Dubai Marina

Apartment living with short commutes but noisy evenings in shared buildings. Candidates working on multi-stage calculus need a quiet hour, and families here often find a late start after eight the only reliable option.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Al Barsha and Umm Al Sheif

Students we support attend large British and American schools in this corridor, where maths departments are big enough to staff an extension set and command-term teaching is usually explicit. A candidate here losing technique marks is often losing them to speed rather than to ignorance.

  • GEMS Wellington International School
  • Dubai American Academy
  • Kings' School Al Barsha
  • Al Mawakeb School Al Barsha
  • Dubai National School

Jumeirah Park, Jumeirah Heights and Al Furjan

A cluster of schools with strong maths provision but variable extension offerings, so some candidates meet Further Pure content in an enrichment club rather than a timetabled set. Club teaching tends to cover content well and technique hardly at all, which shapes what paid hours should do.

  • Dubai British School Jumeirah Park
  • The Arbor School
  • Sunmarke School
  • Arcadia Preparatory School
  • Delhi Private School Dubai

Al Twar, Muhaisnah and Al Qusais

Large cohorts across several curricula on the northern side of the city. Candidates here frequently sit ten subjects, and the useful conversation is which three decide the sixth-form offer rather than how to fit an eleventh into the week.

  • The Westminster School Dubai
  • Dubai Scholars Private School
  • Al Diyafah High School
  • Apple International School
  • Our Own High School Al Warqa

Schools are named purely as context for Dubai's private education market; IB Gram is independent and claims no affiliation with, endorsement by or partnership with any of them.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send a marked script, not a description

A marked 4PM1 question set or mock, however disappointing. A description of what the candidate finds hard is the least reliable input available, because candidates cannot see the marks they lose to command terms and exact form. The script shows it in twenty minutes.

  2. 02

Get the losses classified into four buckets

Technique, content, slips and timing, with a count in each. That classification is the whole diagnosis. A candidate losing most marks to technique needs a fortnight of habit work. One losing them to content needs a term. The raw mark cannot tell those two apart and families decide on it anyway.

  3. 03

Take the free first hour on one real question

One hour, no card details, spent marking a single genuine 4PM1 question properly and rebuilding the answer. The candidate usually discovers within twenty minutes that they knew the mathematics and were not writing it acceptably, which is a more useful realisation than any syllabus discussion.

  4. 04

    Build the one-page results document

Download the current formulae sheet for the centre's specification version and sort every needed result into three columns: on the sheet, memorise, recover from a definition. Making that page is itself revision, and it becomes the spine of the final fortnight.

  5. 05

Work to a written plan with checkpoints

Content scheduled with the new material early, technique from week one rather than week thirty, timed papers from around week thirty, and named checkpoints where continuing or withdrawing are both acceptable. An untiered eleventh subject needs that withdrawal option to be genuine.

  6. 06

Review on the technique count, not the feeling

After the intervention, the next marked paper should show the technique loss count falling sharply. If it has not, the plan was wrong and changing it is our problem rather than yours. Progress in this subject is measurable, so it gets measured.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Command terms taught as content

Show that, prove, hence, deduce, exact form and use algebra to show are instructions about method, and a candidate who reads them as ordinary English loses marks on mathematics they already know. Two sessions plus drilled practice on past questions is the cheapest grade movement available in 4PM1.

Losses classified before anything is taught

Every marked script is sorted into technique, content, slips and timing with a count in each, because two candidates with identical raw marks can be a fortnight or a term away from where they need to be. The raw mark cannot distinguish them and families routinely decide on it.

Exact form checked before the arithmetic

A rounded decimal at the end of flawless working forfeits the mark, and retrofitting an exact answer from a decimal is often impossible. The habit taught is reading the required form first and carrying surds and pi symbolically from the opening line, which is faster as well as more accurate.

A written plan with a real withdrawal option

Forty weeks scheduled backwards from the series, with the genuinely new material early and named checkpoints at weeks twelve, twenty-four and thirty-two. Because 4PM1 is untiered and usually an eleventh subject, stopping has to remain a respectable decision rather than an admission of failure.

Honest about the format and its limits

Delivery is online one-to-one; home visits are an India-only service. For an abstract written subject that costs almost nothing and buys access to a specialist in a minority entry. Where a candidate's real problem is motivation rather than marks, a person in the room is better and we say so.

Independent, with nothing claimed that is not held

No approval, accreditation or licence from KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, MoHRE or the Ministry of Education, no partnership with Pearson, Cambridge or the IB, no UAE office, no grade promised, no assessed work produced, and no Pearson papers or mark schemes reproduced.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

Does a 4PM1 home tutor in Dubai come to the house?+

Not through IB Gram. Lessons for Dubai families are delivered one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, with slots shifted to post-Iftar timing through Ramadan, and home visits are a service run only in India. For Further Pure Maths this costs very little: there is nothing physical to handle, and watching the candidate's working appear line by line on a shared surface is better for proof teaching than reading a finished attempt. The market rate for an in-home visit in Dubai also runs roughly AED 180 to AED 500 against AED 150 to AED 300 online.

What does show that actually require in a 4PM1 answer?+

The answer is already given in the question, so every available mark is for the route to it. The fatal error is starting from the stated result and working back to the information supplied, which demonstrates nothing an examiner can credit. Begin from what the question gives you and arrive at the stated answer with every step on the page. One useful consequence: where part (a) is a show that, the result can be quoted and used in part (b) even by a candidate who could not derive it.

What does hence mean in a 4PM1 question, and can my child ignore it?+

No, and ignoring it is one of the most expensive habits in the subject. Hence instructs the candidate to use the result just obtained, because the examinable skill in that part is the connection rather than the computation. A correct answer reached by an independent method collects almost nothing. Hence or otherwise is different: it permits another approach while hinting that the previous result is quicker. Candidates who confuse the two either lose marks or waste minutes, so reading the term precisely matters as much as respecting it.

Why does my child lose marks when their 4PM1 answer is correct?+

Almost always presentation rather than mathematics. The common surrenders are a show that answered backwards, a hence ignored, an exact value given as a decimal, a stationary point found but never classified, a sketch with no labelled intercepts or asymptotes, and a trigonometric equation solved for one value when the interval contained several. None is a knowledge gap. All of them respond to a fortnight of drilled habit work, which is why the diagnosis has to classify the losses before anything gets retaught.

What does give your answer in exact form mean for 4PM1?+

Leave it in terms of surds, a multiple of pi, an exact fraction or a logarithm rather than evaluating it. A rounded decimal at the end of perfect working forfeits that mark, and retrofitting an exact answer from a decimal is often impossible. The habit is to read the required form before starting the arithmetic, then carry surds and pi symbolically from the first line. The rule is symmetrical: where a rounded answer is permitted, the question states the precision and rounding differently loses the accuracy mark.

Which 4PM1 formulae are on the sheet and which have to be memorised?+

Download the current sheet for your centre's specification version from Pearson and build the list from what is actually absent, because candidates consistently assume it contains more than it does. The results most often needed and not supplied are the standard derivatives and their reverse for integration, exact trigonometric values at common angles, the laws of logarithms, and the condition for a geometric series to have a sum to infinity. Arc length, sector area and the quadratic formula can be recovered from a definition rather than memorised.

Do 4PM1 sketch graphs need to be accurate drawings?+

No. Sketch marks are awarded for features: correct general shape, intercepts with both axes, asymptotes, coordinates of turning points and behaviour at the extremes. A rough freehand curve with those labelled outscores an immaculate one with none of them, and artistic quality is not assessed anywhere. Decide the features before the pencil moves and the marks are secured before the drawing takes twenty seconds. Sketch on paper during practice, including in online sessions, so the hand habit exists under exam pressure.

How far ahead of the exam should 4PM1 preparation start?+

Around forty weeks, and the important detail is the order rather than the length. Technique work belongs in week one, not week thirty, because a year of practice embeds whatever habits the candidate starts with and retrofitting command-term discipline in April means unlearning. The genuinely new content, integration, radians and the binomial series, goes early so the school covers it a second time later for nothing and so a struggling candidate finds out in November while withdrawing is still reasonable.

What should a 4PM1 mock result actually tell us?+

Far less than the classification behind it. Two candidates with identical raw marks can be a fortnight apart or a term apart: one lost marks across every question to technique, the other did not know four of the ten content areas. Sort the script into technique, content, slips and timing with a count in each. Then look at where in the paper the losses sit, since marks lost in the final third are usually a timing symptom with an upstream cause rather than a separate problem.

Is 4PM1 a sensible eleventh subject in a Dubai timetable?+

Only if the three subjects that will decide the sixth-form offer are already secure. Every Dubai private school teaches Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies alongside its licensed curriculum under KHDA requirements, with instructional time calculated on a forty-minute lesson unit, and that sits on top of nine or ten core and option subjects. A candidate carrying a Further Pure workload while their mainstream maths or science grade is still in doubt has allocated the year badly, and several mediocre grades is the usual outcome.

Should my child take Cambridge Additional Mathematics 0606 instead of 4PM1?+

Neither is inferior, and the decision is usually made by which board the school already uses for mainstream maths rather than by any pedagogical comparison. Both cover comparable extension ground including calculus, radians and series. What does not transfer cleanly is technique: the command-term conventions and the formulae sheets differ between boards, so a family moving school mid-course needs the technique work redone even where the mathematics carries over. Ask the department which one the centre enters before buying any hours.

How do we tell whether marks are going to technique or to content?+

Only from a marked script sorted into categories, which takes about twenty minutes. Technique losses look like correct mathematics that did not collect the mark: a backwards show that, a decimal where an exact value was asked for, a second derivative with no conclusion. Content losses look like a question abandoned or attempted with the wrong tool. The counts then drive the plan and the review, because if technique dominated and the next marked paper shows no fall in that count, the intervention was wrong.

Can 4PM1 sessions move during Ramadan and over the summer?+

Yes to both, and for this subject the summer question matters more than families expect. Sessions shift to post-Iftar slots through Ramadan, with shorter and more specific problem sets issued in those weeks. Over the long Dubai summer, a candidate who stops entirely for ten weeks loses most of the integration fluency they built, so a reduced schedule beats a complete break. Families who travel keep the same tutor and the same slot from wherever they are, which is worth more on a forty-week plan than it sounds.

How long should a 4PM1 session be?+

Ninety minutes is the usual shape, because Further Pure work rarely achieves much in forty. A session returns and discusses a marked question, teaches new material, and then has the candidate attempting problems while the tutor watches each line appear and intervenes where the argument breaks rather than after a finished attempt. In communities with long commutes, such as Al Twar or International Media Production Zone, one longer weekend session almost always outlasts two weekday ones through the spring term.

Does 4PM1 need a different kind of tutor from 4MA1?+

Usually yes. 4MA1 rewards a correct answer with method shown; 4PM1 rewards a defensible argument, so a tutor needs to mark identity proofs and multi-stage calculus regularly rather than occasionally. Further Pure is also a minority entry in Dubai, which makes a tutor who teaches it a narrow specialism inside a narrow specialism. Filtering that small pool further by who will drive to your community on a weekday evening leaves very little, which is the practical argument for delivering over video.

How can I check a 4PM1 tutor is permitted to charge us in the UAE?+

Ask directly whether they hold the MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023. It is granted free of charge for two years and applied for through the MoHRE smart app, website and e-services under the service name Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, with a stated two working day completion time. Individuals tutoring without it are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no schedule of amounts has been published. Since it is free and quick, evasion is informative.

Send the script, and we will tell you which fortnight it is

If you are looking for an Edexcel IGCSE Further Pure Maths 4PM1 home tutor in Dubai because a mock mark came back lower than it should have, the useful first step costs nothing: send the marked script. Twenty minutes of classification separates technique losses from content gaps, and that distinction is the difference between a fortnight of habit work and a term of teaching. The free first hour is then spent marking one real question properly and rebuilding the answer. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time; no tutor is sent to a UAE address.
