Cambridge IGCSE Art and Design 0400 Online Tutor in Dubai

A Cambridge IGCSE Art and Design 0400 online tutor in Dubai works on one thing a camera can genuinely do better than a visitor: reading a sketchbook spread the way an examiner reads it, slowly, against one assessment objective at a time. This page explains the mechanics in detail, because most families have never seen a practical subject taught through a screen and reasonably want to know how it works before paying for it. It also sets out what each price band in the Dubai market buys.

  • Spreads uploaded before the hour, so the session opens on a judgement
  • Each page marked against one named Cambridge 0400 assessment objective
  • Annotation typed from the candidate's own spoken words, never dictated to them
  • A free first lesson with the sketchbook on camera, no card details

How a Cambridge 0400 portfolio is actually taught through a screen

The reasonable objection to online art tutoring is that art is physical. It is, and a camera cannot hold a maquette or feel the tooth of a paper. What a camera does unusually well is the other half of the subject: looking carefully at a finished page and deciding what it evidences. That is also the half where Cambridge 0400 grades are won and lost, because the examiner who marks your child's portfolio will never touch most of it either. They will look at it, read the annotation, and decide which assessment objective each spread serves.

So the session is built around looking. The candidate props a phone or a document camera over the open sketchbook, angled square to the page rather than over a shoulder, and the tutor sees the spread at roughly the scale and flatness an examiner sees it. Where pages are uploaded the night before, the tutor has already read them and the hour opens with a verdict rather than a search. On a subject where the evidence is thirty or forty unmarked spreads, that single logistical habit is worth more than any amount of enthusiasm.

The second thing a screen changes for the better is who teaches your child. Cambridge Art and Design is a narrow specialism. Restricting the search to tutors willing to drive to a Dubai villa on a weekday evening leaves a pool of general art teachers, some of whom have never applied a 0400 mark scheme to real candidate work. Removing the drive widens the pool to people who have. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai or anywhere in the UAE; that service runs only in India, and this page would rather explain the trade than disguise it.

Price is the other question families arrive with. The Dubai market for one-to-one online subject tutoring runs roughly AED 150 to AED 300 an hour, with specialist IGCSE and A Level tutors at AED 200 to AED 450 and above, read from published provider pages and a rate aggregator in October 2026. Those are market figures, attributed in the tables below, not an IB Gram price list. What the tables add is the part the market never explains: what a given hour is actually spent on, and which 0400 objective returns the most marks per hour of work.

The rest of this page covers the four assessment objectives and what each one punishes, where the recoverable marks sit, the equipment a Dubai household genuinely needs, how a practical option survives a timetable that already includes KHDA's mandatory Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies, the November and private candidate routes, annotation in a second language, and the choice between 0400 and IB Visual Arts at sixteen. It ends by stating plainly why the honest label for this service is online tutor.

At a glance

  • Square-on camera over the open sketchbook, not over the candidate's shoulder
  • Pages uploaded in advance where possible, so the hour is spent on judgement
  • One assessment objective named at the start of each session
  • Dubai market rate for online one-to-one: roughly AED 150-300 an hour (sources in the tables)
  • Mandatory Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies sit alongside the option in every Dubai private school
  • Delivery to the UAE is online only; IB Gram runs home visits in India, not here
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Art sits inside a longer route, and the question a Dubai family is really asking at each stage is whether the practical strand is still worth the timetable it occupies. These are the four stages, with what each demands of a candidate.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

IB Middle Years Programme Arts

Assessed on four criteria rather than four objectives, with a heavier emphasis on reflection and process than most British-curriculum art teaching at the same age. Candidates arriving in Cambridge 0400 from an MYP arts cohort usually write about their work more fluently than their peers and have less experience of sustained observational drawing. The transition work is therefore drawing, not thinking.

International Baccalaureate students make up about seven per cent of Dubai's private-school enrolment, and a number of Dubai families move between an MYP school and a British-curriculum one at fourteen. A candidate joining 0400 mid-route should have their existing arts folder audited against the Cambridge objectives before new pages are made, because the strongest MYP evidence is often filed in a way Cambridge marking does not read.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE Art and Design (0400)

A practical qualification assessed across four objectives: gathering and investigation, exploration and development, organisation of visual form, and selection and control of media. Candidates build preparatory work and then produce an outcome under supervised conditions. The component combination is chosen by the centre at entry, so a parent cannot look it up and must ask the art department in writing.

Dubai centres normally enter the June or November Cambridge series. Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative timetable zones and states that it cannot accept responsibility for a candidate who misses an examination after the wrong zone timetable was used. With a supervised practical window that is a live risk rather than paperwork, so the examinations officer at your Dubai school is the only source worth trusting for dates.

AS/AAges 16-18 · Years 12-13

Cambridge International AS and A Level Art and Design (9479)

Independent personal investigation at a scale 0400 only hints at, with a written element that carries real weight. Candidates who learned at fifteen to record why a decision was made, rather than what was produced, find the step manageable. Candidates who learned to make attractive pages without reasoning find it brutal, and the gap usually shows in the first term.

Not every Dubai sixth form offers 9479, and some candidates change school at sixteen to continue the subject. Families weighing that should ask the receiving department how many candidates it entered in the last series and what studio access looks like outside lessons, since independent studio time is the resource art A Levels most often run short of in this city.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma Visual Arts

Three assessed strands: a comparative study, a process portfolio and a curated exhibition. The written and curatorial demands are substantially higher than at 0400, and the exhibition asks a candidate to make selection and installation decisions nobody asked them to make before. Strong practical ability alone does not carry a Visual Arts grade.

Dubai's 2026-27 intake adds seven new private schools, three of them International Baccalaureate, creating 16,846 new places, so more families here will face the choice at sixteen than two years ago. The deciding factor is rarely the practical work. It is whether the candidate can write analytically about somebody else's art without summarising a biography.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

What a 0400 session actually works on is a skill, not a topic. These are the ten that come up most in Dubai portfolios, each with what the camera can and cannot do for it.

Measured observational drawing

Taught through timed on-camera exercises

Sighting, proportion and relative measurement, practised in short repeated runs rather than one long sitting. A camera shows the drawing and the object together, so a tutor can see exactly where the proportion went wrong instead of guessing. This is the cheapest and most transferable intervention in the subject.

Controlled colour mixing

Practical demonstration both ways

Working from a deliberately small palette the candidate can predict, and recording the mixing tests as evidence rather than hiding them. Screens shift colour, so the tutor describes the target in terms of a relationship between two mixes on the candidate's own sheet, which is more rigorous than matching a swatch anyway.

Reduction lino and monoprint

Designed around available equipment

A route for candidates with no school press access, and generous on marks because every state and proof is a visible decision. The tutor reviews the cut between states and the candidate photographs each pull. The constraint produces better development evidence than a single clean edition ever does.

Screen and stencil processes

Planned remotely, executed in the department

Separation planning, registration and edition sequencing are all paper exercises that work perfectly over video. The physical pulling happens in the school studio. Candidates who plan the separations properly waste far less department time, which matters where press and screen access is rationed.

Maquette construction and documentation

The hardest thing to teach through a screen

A tutor cannot turn the object, so the candidate learns to document it: turntable sequences, consistent lighting, a scale reference in shot, and construction stages photographed as they happen. That skill is required regardless of tutoring format, because the examiner also works from photographs of some of it.

Dye and stitch sampling

Small samples, one variable each

Textiles evidence reads beautifully when samples are small, labelled and each test changes only one thing. The usual failure is a large sample that changes three variables and proves nothing. Reviewing samples on camera is straightforward; the tutoring work is keeping the sampling disciplined and the material consumption sane.

Lens-based editing judgement

Selection, not shooting

A contact sheet of two hundred frames with no selection rationale evidences nothing. Sessions work on stating the technical variable being tested in each run and then on cutting hard, writing down why one frame survived. Screen sharing makes this one of the strongest online formats in the whole subject.

Typographic and thumbnail sketching

Hand work behind a digital outcome

Graphic communication candidates lose marks because the visible development is a sequence of saved files. Thumbnails, letterform sketching and rough layout sheets put the thinking back on paper. The tutor marks the sheets; the software work the candidate does alone.

Annotation that names the decision

Marked alongside every page

Annotation describing the image wastes the space. Annotation naming the decision, the rejected alternative and the reason earns credit. The method is to ask, listen, and then help tighten the candidate's own sentence, which is a conversation that works better typed in a shared document than spoken across a table.

Portfolio sequencing

Decides how the evidence reads

Evidence out of order forces an examiner to reconstruct the route, and credit leaks during reconstruction. Mapping the order — source, test, decision, development, outcome — is a single session with a clear output, and it is usually the highest-value hour in the final term.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats cover almost every Cambridge 0400 request from Dubai, and which one a family needs depends on how much of the portfolio already exists rather than on the grade being chased.

Camera-side critique hour

The standing format. Spreads are uploaded beforehand, the tutor reads them against one objective, and the hour is spent marking aloud and deciding what to make next. The candidate hears the reasoning applied to their own page, which is how they eventually learn to apply it without a tutor present.

  • Square-on camera or scans, whichever the candidate can set up reliably
  • One objective named at the start, so the hour has a verdict
  • Marking spoken aloud, not summarised afterwards
  • A short written page list issued the same day

Documentation and sequencing workshop

A short series aimed at candidates whose practical work is better than its presentation. Lighting, square-on photography, scale references, turntable sequences for constructed work, and then the order the portfolio should be read in. Most candidates recover marks here that they already earned months earlier.

  • Lighting and camera setup tested on the candidate's actual work
  • Scale references and turntable technique for three-dimensional pieces
  • A written sequencing map before submission
  • Pages identified that repeat rather than develop, and can go

Timed preparation block

Short, dense sessions in the weeks before the externally set component, working to the allocation the school confirms. The tutor observes a run and then debriefs on pacing and on what was abandoned too early, so the supervised session is not the first time the candidate has met that clock.

  • Runs matched to the allocation confirmed by the department
  • Preparatory material reviewed well before the window opens
  • Debrief on pacing, not on the quality of the outcome
  • No contact of any kind with the supervised work itself

The four Cambridge 0400 assessment objectives and what each one punishes

Cambridge 0400 is marked across four objectives: gathering, recording, research and investigation; exploration and development of ideas; organisation and relationships of visual and other forms; and selection and control of materials, media and processes. Candidates and parents usually know the list exists and have never seen it applied to a real page. Confirm the current weightings on cambridgeinternational.org or through the art department, because they are set by the syllabus version a centre is teaching and are not something this page should restate.

Each objective has a characteristic failure, and they are easy to spot once you know what to look for. Gathering fails when sources came off a screen with no first-hand recording attached. Exploration fails when pages repeat an idea at different sizes instead of changing it in response to a test. Organisation fails when a composition was never considered as a composition. Control of media fails when a candidate attempts a technique they have not practised, usually on the final piece, usually in the last fortnight.

What makes this diagnosable rather than vague is that each failure has a specific remedy with a known cost in hours. A dated gathering trip with drawings made in front of the work fixes the first. Annotating existing pages to name the decision behind each fixes the second. A single session on thumbnail composition fixes the third. Short repeated media tests, recorded, fix the fourth. None of those remedies involves making a new final piece, which is what most families instinctively buy.

A tutor who names the objective at the start of the hour is doing something the department often cannot, because a class teacher with twenty-five candidates marks holistically out of necessity. One-to-one time is the only realistic place to go objective by objective through a specific portfolio, and it is the whole reason this format is worth paying for on a practical subject.

What each Dubai price band actually buys in a 0400 hour

Published market rates in Dubai span an order of magnitude. Budget online tutoring starts around AED 45 to AED 65 on EdFlik's own listing and AED 33 to AED 52 on Tutopiya's, a qualified subject tutor runs roughly AED 150 to AED 300 with Unitors listing IGCSE from AED 150, specialist IGCSE and A Level tutors sit at AED 200 to AED 450 and above with TutorChase publishing AED 270, and examiner-tier providers such as BartyED publish AED 650. All of those were read in October 2026, and all of them belong to the provider named, not to IB Gram.

What the bands do not tell you is what happens to the hour. At the bottom, the hour is live help with whatever the candidate is doing at that moment, which can be perfectly useful for a technique demonstration and is close to worthless for objective-by-objective portfolio marking, because nobody has read the portfolio. In the middle, the hour usually includes some reading and a short note. At the top, preparation, written feedback and criteria-referenced marking are assumed, and the scarcity is in availability rather than in competence.

For Cambridge 0400 the decision is not which band to buy but which band to buy for which job. A technique the candidate has never tried can be demonstrated by a competent generalist. A sketchbook audit against four objectives cannot, because it requires somebody who has applied the criteria to real candidate work. Families who split their spend this way — a cheap demonstration hour where a demonstration is what is needed, a specialist hour where judgement is what is needed — consistently get more out of the same total budget.

IB Gram's own approach is to quote after the diagnosis rather than before it. The first lesson is free, with no card details, and the sketchbook is open on camera for it. A rate and a realistic number of hours follow once somebody has seen the work. Any figure offered before the portfolio has been seen is a guess, and the guess is always in the seller's favour.

03

Equipment a Dubai household genuinely needs, and what it does not

The equipment question is usually answered by somebody selling equipment, so here is the short version: a phone made in the last five years, something to hold it steady above the page, a lamp, and a reliable connection. That is the whole list. A document camera is a convenience rather than a requirement, and a graphics tablet contributes nothing to a 0400 portfolio that is going to be submitted as physical work. Money spent on gear is money not spent on hours, and hours are what move objectives.

What does matter is how the phone is used. The camera must look square down at the page, not across it at an angle, because an angled view distorts proportion and a tutor then corrects a drawing error the candidate never made. A lamp to one side rather than overhead keeps the page readable without a hot spot. For constructed work the candidate turns the object while the camera stays still, which is also exactly how the documentation for the portfolio should be made.

A second camera angle is the one genuine upgrade, and a second phone on a stand does the job. It lets a tutor see the page and the candidate's hand at the same time, which matters when the thing being corrected is how a tool is being held rather than what is on the paper. Families already own two phones; nothing needs to be bought. Bandwidth is rarely the limitation in Dubai, but a candidate working from a tower apartment on a shared connection should test the setup once before a paid session rather than during it.

The things that do not help are worth naming too, because they get recommended constantly. Tracing aids, projectors and photo-to-drawing apps all produce pages that read as mechanical to an examiner and undermine the gathering objective they were bought to serve. Expensive paper on which a candidate is afraid to make a mark is worse than cheap paper covered in tests. The table below separates the two lists.

Fitting a practical option around Dubai's mandatory subjects

Every Dubai private school teaches Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies alongside its licensed international curriculum, and KHDA requires those subjects regardless of which curriculum the school runs. The requirements were to be implemented by the start of the 2025-26 academic year, or April 2026 for schools whose year begins in April. For a Year 10 candidate carrying a practical option, this is the timetable arithmetic that decides whether the portfolio gets made.

The detail matters. KHDA requires separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and states that combined classes for the two groups are strictly prohibited because the curriculum expectations and the language of instruction differ. Instructional time is calculated on a forty-minute lesson unit, schools may vary lesson length provided total weekly time is met, and it is advised that any mandatory subject lesson runs at least twenty-five minutes. The practical effect is a timetable with limited slack.

Art loses in that arithmetic more often than other subjects, because its homework is not a task that can be finished in an hour at a desk. A candidate with four hours a week of mandatory subjects, a full option block and a commute from Al Furjan to Jebel Ali does not have an easy evening in which to build a maquette. Pretending otherwise produces a portfolio made entirely in two desperate bursts, which is exactly what the development objective is designed to detect.

The planning answer is to make the portfolio in small, scheduled pieces and to protect one longer weekend block per half term for anything wet, constructed or gathered. A fortnightly tutoring slot suits that rhythm better than a weekly one, because the week between sessions is when the pages are actually made. Families who book weekly and then cancel half the sessions would have done better booking fortnightly and keeping all of them.

05

November entries, resits and sitting Cambridge as a private candidate in Dubai

Cambridge runs IGCSE, O Level and International A Level examinations in a June series and a November series, so a Dubai candidate who needs another attempt does not wait a full year. What families underestimate is the lead time. The entry decision precedes the examination by a long way, and once the centre has submitted it the component combination is fixed. Count a June series backwards and the shape is obvious. The papers themselves sit inside a window of a few weeks in May and June, the zone timetable for the centre fixes the exact dates, and the entry that decides which components a candidate sits closes in the spring, roughly four months earlier. The exact deadline is not something to take from a tutoring page: it arrives on the centre's statement of entry, and the exams officer at the Dubai school is the person who holds it. The practical consequence for an Art and Design candidate is that the coursework decision, Component 1 or Component 2 and which area of study, has to be settled long before anyone is sitting in an exam hall. A student who starts thinking about it in the term the papers fall has already lost the months when a portfolio is actually built.

For a practical subject a resit is a bigger undertaking than in a written one, because the portfolio evidence has to be rebuilt rather than revised. A candidate resitting Art and Design is not re-reading notes; they are producing fresh preparatory work and sitting a new supervised component. That is a term of making, not a fortnight of revision, and it is the reason a resit decision in this subject should be taken as early as the results allow rather than left to drift.

Private candidate entry is a separate question and a Dubai-specific one, because not every school accepts external candidates and the ones that do set their own conditions. A practical subject is harder still, since the supervised component requires space, invigilation and in some cases equipment. A family considering this route should contact centres directly about whether they accept private candidates for 0400 specifically, well before the entry deadline, and should expect the answer to be more restrictive than for written subjects.

Whatever route is taken, the zone timetable matters. Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones and states plainly that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for your zone, and that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an examination as a result of using the wrong one. Get the dates from the examinations officer. Not from a forum, and not from a general search.

06

Annotation in a second or third language, without writing it for them

A large share of Dubai 0400 candidates are working in their second or third language, and the most common consequence is annotation that understates the thinking behind the page. The candidate knows precisely why they abandoned one colour relationship for another and writes a sentence that says the colours are nice. An examiner cannot award credit for reasoning that is not on the page, so the marks go missing even though the decision was made properly.

The method that works and stays honest is to make the candidate say it first. A tutor asks what was being tested, what the alternative was and why it lost, and listens to the answer in whatever form it arrives. Then the two of them tighten the candidate's own sentence together, typed in a shared document while the candidate watches the words change. The thinking stays theirs. The expression improves. An examiner reading a portfolio where every annotation sounds like an adult wrote it can tell, and that suspicion costs more than clumsy English ever does.

What a tutor will not do is supply the sentence. Dictating annotation for a candidate to copy is supplying the thinking, which crosses the line that Cambridge and the IB both draw around assessed work. IB Gram does not produce assessed work in any subject, does not sell portfolio pages or coursework, and does not reproduce or distribute Cambridge syllabus documents, past papers or mark schemes. Those live on cambridgeinternational.org and are properly accessed through the school.

There is a practical by-product worth mentioning. Candidates who practise articulating decisions out loud through Year 10 write much faster in Year 11, and they also perform better in the supervised component, because they have rehearsed making a decision and defending it under time pressure. The annotation work is not a presentational tidy-up. It is the thinking strand of the subject, which is why it belongs in the sessions rather than at the end of them.

07

Cambridge 0400 or IB Visual Arts at sixteen: how Dubai families should decide

Dubai is one of the few cities where this is a real choice rather than a theoretical one, because the city holds both a dominant British-curriculum sector and a growing International Baccalaureate one. KHDA's figures for 2024-25 record 387,441 students across 227 private schools offering seventeen different curricula, with UK schools taking the largest share of enrolment and International Baccalaureate schools about seven per cent. Seven more private schools open for 2026-27, three of them International Baccalaureate.

The practical difference at sixteen is not the amount of making. It is the amount of writing and curating. Cambridge AS and A Level Art and Design asks for a sustained personal investigation with a written element. IB Visual Arts asks for three distinct things: a comparative study of other artists' work, a process portfolio showing experimentation, and a curated exhibition the candidate selects and explains. A candidate who can make but cannot analyse somebody else's work will struggle more with Visual Arts than with the Cambridge route.

The second difference is breadth of commitment. Visual Arts sits inside a full Diploma with five other subjects, an extended essay and theory of knowledge, so the time available for studio work is bounded by a structure the candidate cannot adjust. A Cambridge sixth former taking three or four subjects can, in practice, give art more hours. Families whose child wants a portfolio for a foundation course or a design degree should weigh that honestly against the breadth the Diploma offers.

A 0400 tutor is well placed to advise on this because they have seen the candidate's actual evidence rather than a predicted grade. The signal to look for is the annotation. A candidate whose annotation names decisions and engages with other artists' work is ready for the Visual Arts comparative study. A candidate whose strength is entirely in the making is better served by the route that rewards making, and there is nothing second-rate about choosing it.

08

Why online tutor is the honest label for this service

This page is titled the way it is because that is what it is. Lessons for Dubai families are delivered online, one-to-one, over live video, on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send anybody to a UAE address, and home visits are a service it runs only in India. Many pages in this market imply a visit in the title and explain otherwise on a phone call, and a family that has already paid a deposit by then has been handled rather than informed.

Being direct about it also allows an honest account of the limits. A screen cannot hold a maquette, supervise a wet process, or sit next to a reluctant fifteen-year-old and simply be present until they start working. Those are real advantages of a person in the room, and a family for whom the binding problem is motivation rather than marks should weigh them seriously. What this format offers instead is the right specialist rather than the nearest one, portfolio reading done before the hour starts, and a slot that survives traffic.

There is also a regulatory reason to be precise about what is being sold. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, with the MoHRE private tuition work permit granted free of charge for two years and applied for through the MoHRE app, website and e-services. An operation with premises and staff in Dubai needs a separate KHDA Educational Services Permit issued to a training institute. IB Gram holds no regulator approval, accreditation or licence from KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, MoHRE, the Ministry of Education, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson, and operates no UAE office or centre.

What is left after all that honesty is a specific, checkable offer. A free first hour with the sketchbook on camera. Marking against one named objective at a time. Annotation typed from the candidate's own words. A written page plan after every session. No assessed work produced by anybody but the candidate, and no grade promised by anybody at all.

Where we tutor

Dubai communities and the slot that actually works there

Online delivery removes the drive but not the school run, the prayer times or the three-hour homework block. These are the communities Dubai 0400 families most often book from, with the scheduling reality in each.

Dubai Marina

Apartment living, so wet and messy media usually happen in the school studio and the home session is critique, annotation and planning. Evening slots after seven work best here; the five-to-six window disappears into building lifts and parking.

Jumeirah Lakes Towers

A similar tower profile to the Marina with a slightly younger cohort and a heavy tutoring market already operating from the same buildings. Families here frequently compare an online specialist against a centre two floors down, which is a genuine choice rather than a false one.

Downtown Dubai and Business Bay

Short school commutes but long parental working days, so sessions are often booked for after eight in the evening. Candidates here are close to Dubai Design District and to the Opera district, which makes a weekday gathering trip realistic without a long drive.

Al Furjan and Discovery Gardens

Villa and low-rise communities with reasonable space for drying work, and a school set spread across Jebel Ali and Dubai Investments Park. The commute home is long enough that a half past five start is usually optimistic.

Jumeirah Village Circle

A dense mixed community with one of the fastest-growing school-age populations in the city and a shortage of specialist option teaching nearby. The practical consequence is that families here benefit most from a format that does not depend on who lives close by.

Dubai Silicon Oasis and Academic City

Close to several large schools and to university campuses, so sessions can start earlier here than almost anywhere in Dubai. Candidates often have usable space at home for construction work, which widens the areas of study worth considering.

The Springs, The Lakes and The Meadows

Established villa communities where studio space at home is rarely the constraint and the school run is short. The limiting factor tends to be a crowded extracurricular timetable, so a fortnightly slot holds better than a weekly one.

Mirdif and Al Warqa

Older communities on the eastern side with a different school set and a long run to the Al Quoz galleries. One substantial gathering trip per half term, planned properly, beats several short ones that collect nothing usable.

Students we support attend large British and international schools serving the tower communities, where art option cohorts are sizeable and studio access outside lessons is usually limited by room availability rather than equipment. Candidates here plan messy processes around timetabled studio slots.

  • Emirates International School Meadows
  • Dubai British School Jumeirah Park
  • Regent International School
  • American School of Dubai
  • Dubai Heights Academy

Silicon Oasis, Academic City and Nad Al Sheba

A cluster with strong practical facilities in several centres and a wide spread of curricula, so two candidates in the same community can be following quite different art schemes of work. The first job is usually establishing which Cambridge components the centre actually entered.

  • GEMS Modern Academy
  • Repton School Dubai
  • Dubai English Speaking College
  • GEMS Wellington Academy Silicon Oasis
  • The Indian High School Dubai

The Springs, Arabian Ranches and Dubai Hills

Villa communities feeding established British-curriculum schools where art departments are long-standing and expectations are high. Candidates here compete inside a strong internal cohort, so the productive question is which objective the department under-emphasises rather than whether teaching is sound.

  • Jumeirah English Speaking School Arabian Ranches
  • Hartland International School
  • GEMS FirstPoint School
  • Fairgreen International School
  • Dubai British School Emirates Hills

Schools are named only as context for the Dubai market; IB Gram is independent and claims no affiliation with, endorsement by or partnership with any of them.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Confirm the entry in writing

Ask the art department which area of study, which component combination, which Cambridge series and which administrative zone the centre sits in. A parent cannot look any of that up, and every sensible plan depends on all four. Buying hours before these answers arrive wastes the first two of them.

  2. 02

Upload the sketchbook as it is

Photographs or scans of every spread, including the ones the candidate would rather hide, because those are the diagnostic pages. Square-on shots with a side lamp are enough. The tutor reads the whole thing before the trial lesson, which is what makes the free hour a diagnosis rather than an introduction.

  3. 03

Test the camera setup once, unpaid

Five minutes with a phone on a stack of books, a lamp to one side and the sketchbook open. Fixing an angled view or a hot spot before a paid session is the difference between an hour of marking and an hour of adjusting furniture. Most families get it right on the first attempt.

  4. 04

    Take the free first lesson

One hour, no card details, pages open on camera. The tutor marks two or three spreads aloud against a named objective while the candidate listens and argues back. By the end you know which objective is weakest and whether your child will actually show unfinished work to this particular person.

  5. 05

    Split the budget by job

A technique the candidate has never tried needs a demonstration hour. A portfolio audit against four objectives needs a specialist. Spending the same total across those two jobs deliberately produces more than spending it all at one band, and a tutor should tell you which hour you are buying.

  6. 06

    Book fortnightly and keep it

The week between sessions is when pages get made, so a fortnightly slot that is never cancelled beats a weekly one that is cancelled half the time. Timed preparation for the supervised component is added four to six weeks ahead of the window, not in the final days.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Objective-by-objective marking, not general encouragement

Each session names one of the four Cambridge 0400 objectives and works through the portfolio against it. A class teacher with twenty-five candidates marks holistically because there is no alternative. One-to-one time is the only realistic place to do this properly, and it is the reason the format earns its rate.

The portfolio is read before the hour begins

Spreads uploaded the night before are marked in advance, so the session opens with a verdict instead of a scroll. On a subject whose evidence is forty unmarked pages, that habit converts roughly a third of every session from orientation into teaching.

Specialist rather than nearest

Cambridge Art and Design is a narrow specialism and a drive-time radius across Dubai is a poor filter for it. Delivering over video means the match is made on whether somebody has applied a 0400 mark scheme to real candidate portfolios, which is what actually changes an objective score.

Prices attributed, not asserted

Every AED figure on this page names the provider or aggregator that published it and the month it was read. Three of the six competitor pages researched for this market publish no price at all and two quote in a currency UAE families do not transact in.

A hard boundary on assessed work

Nothing that will be submitted is drawn, finished, retouched or dictated by a tutor, and there is no involvement in the supervised component. Annotation is typed from the candidate's own spoken reasoning. Providers in this market sell completed coursework; that route risks the candidate's entry.

Stated clearly: what IB Gram is not

An independent matching platform with no UAE office or centre, no approval, accreditation or licence from KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, MoHRE or the Ministry of Education, and no partnership with the IB, Cambridge or Pearson. Schools named on this page are market context. No grade is promised.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

How does an online tutor review a Cambridge 0400 sketchbook they cannot hold?+

By looking at it the way the examiner will. The candidate sets a phone square above the open spread with a lamp to one side, so the tutor sees the page flat and at roughly examiner scale. Where pages are uploaded the night before, the tutor has already marked them and the hour opens with a verdict. A second phone on a stand adds a view of the candidate's hand when the correction is about how a tool is held. What a screen genuinely cannot do is turn a three-dimensional piece, which is why documentation technique is taught early.

What are the four assessment objectives in Cambridge IGCSE Art and Design 0400?+

Gathering, recording, research and investigation; exploration and development of ideas; organisation and relationships of visual and other forms; and selection and control of materials, media and processes. Confirm the current weightings on cambridgeinternational.org or through the art department, because they depend on the syllabus version the centre teaches. Each objective has a characteristic failure that is easy to spot: sources taken from a screen, ideas repeated rather than developed, compositions never actually composed, and techniques attempted for the first time on the final piece.

Which 0400 objective gives back the most marks per hour of tutoring?+

Usually exploration and development, because the fix works on pages that already exist. Two or three hours of annotation on existing spreads, naming the decision behind each image and the alternative that was rejected, converts output into evidence of a route. Gathering is the next best but needs the candidate to go somewhere and record first-hand, so it costs a weekend as well as an hour of planning. Making a new final piece, which is what most families instinctively buy, is almost always the least productive purchase available.

What equipment do we need at home for online 0400 lessons in Dubai?+

A phone from the last five years, something to hold it steady above the page, a lamp placed to one side rather than overhead, and a connection you have tested once. That is the whole list. A document camera is a convenience, not an upgrade. A graphics tablet contributes nothing to a portfolio submitted as physical work. Avoid tracing aids and projection apps entirely: they produce pages that read as mechanical to an examiner and weaken the gathering objective they were bought to help.

What does a specialist 0400 hour cost compared with a budget online hour in Dubai?+

Published market rates read in October 2026 put budget online tutoring at roughly AED 45 to AED 150, with EdFlik listing from AED 45 to AED 65 and Tutopiya from AED 33 to AED 52. A qualified subject tutor runs about AED 150 to AED 300, with Unitors listing IGCSE from AED 150. Specialist IGCSE and A Level tutors sit at AED 200 to AED 450 and above, with TutorChase publishing AED 270. Those figures belong to the providers named. Our own first lesson is free and a rate follows the diagnosis.

Can we use a cheap tutor for technique and a specialist for marking?+

Yes, and families who do this deliberately get more from the same budget. A technique the candidate has never attempted, such as a dyeing process or a lino cut, can be demonstrated competently by a generalist at the lower band. An audit of a portfolio against four assessment objectives cannot, because it needs somebody who has applied the criteria to real candidate work. The mistake is paying a specialist rate for a demonstration, or a budget rate for a judgement. Ask any tutor which of the two jobs the hour is being spent on.

How do Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies affect time for a practical option?+

Significantly, and it is the arithmetic families forget. Every Dubai private school teaches Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies alongside its licensed curriculum under KHDA requirements, with instructional time calculated on a forty-minute lesson unit and separate classes mandated for Arab and non-Arab groups. A Year 10 candidate carrying those lessons, a full option block and a long commute has very little free evening. The planning answer is small scheduled portfolio pieces during the week and one protected weekend block per half term for anything wet or constructed.

Can my child resit Cambridge 0400 in the November series?+

Cambridge runs IGCSE examinations in a June series and a November series, so another attempt does not mean waiting a year. The complication is that Art and Design is not a revision resit. The portfolio evidence has to be rebuilt and a new supervised component sat, which is a term of making rather than a fortnight of revision. Entry deadlines also sit months ahead of the papers, so the decision should be taken as soon as results allow. The centre submits the entry and the examinations officer confirms the dates.

Can a private candidate sit Cambridge Art and Design in Dubai?+

It is harder than for written subjects and depends entirely on the centre. Not every Dubai school accepts external candidates, and a practical component needs space, invigilation and sometimes equipment, so the schools that do accept private candidates often exclude Art and Design specifically. Contact centres directly and well before the entry deadline, ask about this syllabus by code rather than about IGCSE generally, and expect a more restrictive answer than you would get for a written paper. Do not assume availability from a general search result.

How can a tutor help with annotation if English is my child's second language?+

By making the candidate say it first. The tutor asks what was being tested, what the alternative was and why it lost, then the two of them tighten the candidate's own sentence together in a shared document while the candidate watches the words change. The thinking stays theirs and the expression improves. What a tutor will not do is supply the sentence for copying, which hands over the thinking as well as the words. An examiner reading annotation that sounds like an adult wrote it notices, and that costs more than imperfect English.

What is the difference between Cambridge A Level Art and IB Visual Arts at sixteen?+

Mostly writing and curating rather than making. Cambridge AS and A Level Art and Design asks for a sustained personal investigation with a written element. IB Visual Arts asks for three separate things: a comparative study of other artists' work, a process portfolio of experimentation, and a curated exhibition the candidate selects and justifies. Visual Arts also sits inside a full Diploma with five other subjects, an extended essay and theory of knowledge, so studio hours are bounded. The signal to look at is annotation quality, not practical ability.

Does my child need a document camera, or will a phone do?+

A phone does, provided it looks square down at the page rather than across it at an angle. An angled view distorts proportion, and the tutor then corrects a drawing error the candidate never made, which is worse than no correction. A stack of books holds a phone perfectly well. A lamp to one side stops the overhead hot spot that washes out a spread. Spend the money you would have spent on a document camera on one more hour of marking instead; it will do considerably more for the portfolio.

How many 0400 sessions should a Dubai family book, and how often?+

Fortnightly beats weekly for most candidates, because the week between sessions is when pages actually get made and a weekly slot tends to arrive with nothing new to mark. A realistic pattern is fortnightly critique through Years 10 and 11, a short documentation and sequencing block before submission, and two or three timed runs four to six weeks ahead of the supervised window. A number quoted before anybody has read the portfolio is guesswork, which is why the first diagnostic hour is free.

Does a tutor charging a Dubai family for 0400 sessions need a permit?+

Yes. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and is applied for through the MoHRE smart app, website and e-services under the service name Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, with a stated two working day completion time. Those tutoring without it are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule has been published. Since it is free and quick, an evasive answer to this question is itself informative.

Where do these lessons actually take place, given the title says online tutor?+

Over live video, one-to-one, scheduled on Gulf Standard Time and shifted to post-Iftar slots through Ramadan. IB Gram does not send a tutor to any UAE address; home visits are a service it runs only in India. The candidate works at their own table with the sketchbook under a camera, the tutor marks what is on the page, and a written page plan follows within a day. The trade a family makes is a Cambridge 0400 specialist in place of whoever happens to live within a short drive.

Try the camera, then decide

The quickest way to settle whether a Cambridge IGCSE Art and Design 0400 online tutor can help your child in Dubai is to spend five unpaid minutes setting a phone square above the sketchbook, send the spreads, and take the free first hour with the pages open. A tutor marks two or three of them aloud against one named assessment objective, and by the end you know which objective is weakest and whether your child will show unfinished work to this person. Rates are quoted after that, not before. The AED figures on this page belong to the market and are attributed to the providers who published them.
