IB DP German B Home Tutor in Dubai

Hiring an IB DP German B home tutor in Dubai is complicated by one fact nobody mentions at parents' evening: the German B set at a Dubai IB school usually contains three completely different kinds of student. Transfers out of the German school system, long-term school learners, and heritage speakers who talk fluently and write badly. This page sorts out which one your child is, because the tutoring that works differs for each. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

  • Diagnosis before teaching: case control, word order and register tested first
  • Higher Level work includes the two literary works, not conversation practice
  • Delivered online over live video; IB Gram runs no UAE home visits
  • Ramadan sessions move to post-Iftar slots rather than being cancelled

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

Three students, one German B class, and why generic tuition fails all of them

Walk into a German B lesson at a Dubai IB school and you will find three populations sitting together. The first arrived from German-medium education, sometimes from the city's German-curriculum school, sometimes from Germany, Austria or Switzerland directly. Their spoken German is strong, their academic register is untested, and their written accuracy is often worse than their fluency implies because they learnt the language by using it rather than by studying it. The second group has studied German as a school subject for five or six years, usually two lessons a week. Their grammar is better taught and their vocabulary is narrower. The third group are heritage speakers: one German-speaking parent, fluent conversation, almost no reading, and an accent that misleads every adult who meets them.

A tutor who treats these three the same wastes everybody's money. The transfer student needs register and written accuracy, not vocabulary. The school learner needs volume and confidence, not more grammar explanation. The heritage speaker needs reading, writing and in some cases a frank conversation with the Diploma coordinator about whether German B is the right placement at all. The first question any competent German B tutor should ask is which of the three they are looking at, and the answer comes from a marked piece of writing rather than from a conversation.

Dubai makes the mix more pronounced than it would be in a European school, because the city's population turns over constantly. A German B set of eight can easily contain students who have been in Dubai for eleven years and students who arrived in August. The teacher is covering five prescribed themes, two literary works for the Higher Level candidates, and three different starting points, inside the same timetabled hours. That arithmetic, not any failing of the school, is why families here buy German outside school.

The useful evidence is also different for each group. For a transfer student, the thing to watch is error type: case endings and word order in subordinate clauses are the two that persist longest in students who learnt German by ear. For a school learner, watch range: the number of distinct structures available under time pressure. For a heritage speaker, watch reading comprehension on unfamiliar text, which is almost always the weakest skill and the one that makes the receptive paper a nasty surprise. None of those is visible in a report grade, and all of them are visible in a marked task.

On the search phrase itself: people type home tutor, and in Dubai that generally means somebody driving over. IB Gram does not do that in the UAE, and home visits are a service we offer only in India. German B support reaches Dubai families as one-to-one live video on Gulf Standard Time. For this subject that constraint is close to irrelevant and occasionally an advantage, because German B teaching is a narrow specialism, the Higher Level literary works narrow it further, and the chance that the right person lives twenty minutes away is small.

At a glance

  • German B runs at Standard and Higher Level; Higher Level adds two literary works
  • Transfer, school-learner and heritage-speaker profiles need different tuition
  • Case endings and subordinate-clause word order are the persistent error classes
  • Reading unfamiliar text is the usual weak point for fluent heritage speakers
  • Placement between German A, German B and ab initio is the coordinator's decision
  • Teaching is delivered online, one-to-one, with no home visits in the UAE
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

German appears at several points in a Dubai IB school and the label on the timetable does not always match what the student needs. These are the stages, and what each assumes the student can already do.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13 · SL and HL

Diploma Programme

German B sits in Group 2 and is assessed through a written task, a paper combining listening and reading, and a recorded Individual Oral. Higher Level candidates additionally study two literary works originally written in German, and their oral is built on an extract from one of them rather than on a visual stimulus. The five prescribed themes frame the whole course at both levels, which keeps the content predictable even as the demand inside each component rises at Higher Level.

In Dubai the Higher Level decision is often made on timetable availability rather than on reading history, which is the wrong basis. A student who has never read a novel in German should not meet two of them for the first time in DP2 while also sitting five other subjects. That conversation belongs in the first term of DP1.

MYPAges 11-16 · Language acquisition phases 1-6

Middle Years Programme

MYP German reports by phase and by four criteria covering spoken and visual comprehension, reading comprehension, communication, and accurate use of language. Read as evidence, the criterion split is far more useful than the phase number: a student strong on comprehension criteria and weak on the language-use criterion is a classic heritage-speaker profile, and it predicts exactly the problems German B will expose.

Dubai schools place MYP German students by phase, and families moving between schools in the city often find the same child placed in different phases by two institutions. Where that happens, a marked written task is the only neutral evidence available, and it is worth having before the transfer rather than after.

DPAges 16-19 · SL and HL · Group 1

German A: Language and Literature

The Group 1 route for students whose German is a first language, studied as literature and textual analysis rather than as language acquisition. It is the only German course that can contribute towards the bilingual diploma, and it is a genuine option for strong transfer students from German-medium schooling. The teaching required is closer to literary criticism than to language teaching, and it is a different tutoring purchase entirely.

Few Dubai schools run German A, because the cohort needed to timetable it is rarely there. Families who want it sometimes find the school can offer it as a school-supported self-taught Standard Level option, which is a demanding route and should be discussed with the coordinator early rather than assumed.

DPAges 16-19 · Standard Level only

German ab initio

The beginner route, restricted to students with little or no previous German and available at Standard Level only. It appears here because families sometimes propose it for a struggling German B student. Eligibility rests on prior exposure, so a student with years of German behind them does not qualify however much they are struggling, and the alternative is usually a level change within German B rather than a course change.

Where a Dubai school offers both German B and German ab initio, the sets are often taught in the same block by the same teacher, which limits how far a mid-year move is practical. Ask the coordinator what is actually possible before planning around it.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Group 2 at a Dubai IB school is a small number of languages at several levels, and a German B student is usually choosing between these. Each description is about what the course demands rather than what it covers.

German B Higher Level

HL

Two literary works in German, longer written responses, denser reading texts, and an Individual Oral built on a literary extract. The literary element is what makes Higher Level a genuinely different course: a student can speak excellent German and still be unprepared to discuss a novel's narrative perspective under assessment conditions, which is where most Dubai HL candidates lose ground.

German B Standard Level

SL

The same three components without the literary works, with the oral based on a visual stimulus connected to one of the prescribed themes. For a student whose German is functional but inaccurate, Standard Level with serious work on case and word order produces a better outcome than Higher Level with thin coverage of two books.

German ab initio

Standard Level only

Beginner German for students with little or no prior exposure, examined at Standard Level. The vocabulary expectation is set by the prescribed topics, which makes it trackable. It is not a fallback for a weak German B student; eligibility turns on previous study, and the coordinator applies that rule.

German A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Group 1 German for first-language speakers, taught as literary and textual analysis. The only German route that counts towards the bilingual diploma. Rarely timetabled in Dubai, sometimes available as a school-supported self-taught Standard Level option, and a serious commitment if taken that way.

French B

HL and SL

The most widely available Group 2 language in Dubai IB schools and a useful comparator. French B students lose marks on agreement and tense; German B students lose them on case and clause order. The error profiles are different enough that a tutor strong in one is not automatically useful in the other.

Spanish B

HL and SL

Structurally identical to German B with a very different grammar load: subjunctive mood and tense control rather than case endings and verb-final subordinate clauses. Families running German B for one child and Spanish B for another should expect two separate specialists rather than one tutor covering both.

Mandarin B

HL and SL

Included because scheduling collides: Mandarin teaching capacity in Dubai often sits outside the Gulf time zone, and a household running both Mandarin and German tuition needs the week planned rather than booked twice. Character learning also competes for the same memorisation time German vocabulary needs.

Arabic as an additional language

School mandatory stream

Every private school in Dubai teaches Arabic under KHDA's mandatory subject requirements, regardless of the licensed curriculum, and non-Arab students follow their own stream. A German B student is therefore carrying two languages beyond English in the school week, and the total minutes are worth counting before anything is added.

Extended Essay in German B

Category 2 · DP core

A 4,000-word essay written in German on an aspect of German-speaking culture, supervised within the school. A tutor's role is limited to process coaching: framing a researchable question, evaluating sources, and giving feedback on the student's own drafts. It is usually bought in short blocks around the school's internal checkpoints.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

German B work divides naturally into three jobs, and they are best bought separately because they run on different timescales and suit different session lengths.

Accuracy repair, weekly

The long job. Case endings, adjective declension, and the verb position in subordinate and relative clauses are systematic errors that respond to systematic correction over months, not weeks. Sessions are built around the student's own writing, with each error class tracked separately so a parent can see which have cleared and which are persisting rather than reading a general comment about accuracy.

  • Error classes logged separately: case, declension, word order, tense
  • Correction from the student's own work, not from exercise sheets
  • One short written task between every pair of sessions
  • Monthly summary showing which classes are clearing

Higher Level literary preparation

A distinct block for HL candidates, aimed at the two works and the oral built on an extract from one of them. The work is reading discipline, extract analysis, and the vocabulary of literary discussion, which is a register most fluent speakers have never used. It is bought as a term-length block rather than as open-ended weekly tuition, because the texts are finite.

  • Reading schedule mapped against the school's own sequence
  • Extract-based practice on passages the student has not pre-prepared
  • Vocabulary for narrative perspective, structure and theme
  • No scripts and no pre-written analyses

Receptive paper clinic

Listening and reading under exam timing, with regional varieties of spoken German deliberately included. Dubai students who learnt German from one family or one teacher often hear only one accent, and the paper does not guarantee that courtesy. The clinic is short, intensive and scheduled close to the assessment period rather than running all year.

  • Timed sets with no replays beyond the exam allowance
  • Austrian and Swiss as well as northern German audio
  • Reading on unfamiliar text types, not textbook passages
  • Misheard and misread items listed, not just scored

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

Sorting the three intakes before spending anything

  • Transfer from German-medium schooling: fix case, declension and register
  • Long-term school learner: build range and vocabulary volume through reading
  • Heritage speaker: build reading and writing, and check the placement is right
  • One diagnostic session answers which profile you are dealing with

The first hour of German B tuition should be diagnostic and nothing else. A short written task, a timed reading section, and five minutes of unprepared speech produce enough evidence to place a student in one of the three profiles, and the profile determines everything that follows. Doing this properly costs one session. Skipping it routinely costs a term, because the default assumption in language tuition is that the student needs more vocabulary, and for two of the three profiles that is the wrong diagnosis.

The transfer student out of German-medium schooling is the most commonly misdiagnosed. Their spoken German is better than their tutor's expectations and their written accuracy is worse, because they acquired the language in use and were never drilled on endings. Marks leak on case, on adjective declension, and on register: an informal spoken style transferred into a formal written task reads to an examiner as a control problem rather than as a stylistic choice. The work is narrow and unglamorous, and it moves the written mark quickly.

The school learner is the easiest to help and the slowest to improve. Five or six years of two lessons a week produces accurate but narrow German: a reliable present tense, a small stock of structures, and a vocabulary that covers the textbook and not the paper. The job is range and volume, built over two to three terms, with reading as the main vehicle. The heritage speaker is the hardest case, because everything that is visible is strong and everything that is weak is invisible until a timed reading paper is attempted.

02

German B assessment, and what changes between Standard and Higher Level

German B is assessed through three components. A written task responding to a stimulus carries a quarter of the grade. A paper combining listening and reading carries half. The recorded Individual Oral carries the remaining quarter. Those proportions are the same at both levels, which is why the phrase harder at Higher Level is misleading: the weighting does not shift, the demand inside each component does, and the single largest shift is the arrival of two literary works.

At Standard Level the oral is built on a visual stimulus connected to one of the five prescribed themes. At Higher Level it is built on an extract from one of the two literary works studied, which converts a quarter of the grade into a literary conversation. A student who has read both works properly finds this the most predictable component in the course. A student who has read summaries finds it the least predictable, because the extract cannot be anticipated and a summary gives no vocabulary for discussing how a passage is written.

The table sets the two levels side by side on the dimensions that actually change what tuition should contain. Treat the operational detail as something to confirm: component timings, word bands and the school's internal dates all come from the current subject guide and the Diploma coordinator rather than from a tutoring page. This page publishes no IB exam or results date, because the IB's own site could not be verified by automated checking for this project.

03

The grammar debt: where German B marks actually go

German loses marks in patterns, and the patterns are specific enough to name. Four error classes account for most of what examiners penalise in the written task, and all four are visible in any two-paragraph sample of a student's writing. Case is the largest: accusative and dative confusion after prepositions that take either, and genitive avoided entirely. Adjective declension is the second, because the ending depends on gender, case and the article in front of it, and students who learnt by ear never internalised the table.

Word order is the third and the most damaging to comprehension. The verb goes to the end in subordinate clauses, the order shifts in questions and after certain conjunctions, and students who transfer English structures produce German that is understandable and clearly wrong. The fourth is register: du against Sie inside a single piece of writing, or spoken contractions in a formal letter. Register is the cheapest to fix and the most frequently left unaddressed, because it looks like a slip rather than a skill gap.

Orthography deserves a line of its own. Material written before the spelling reforms uses conventions that no longer apply, and students who have practised from older textbooks or family-owned books carry ß and ss habits that are now wrong. It costs a small number of marks and it is trivial to fix once somebody notices. Nobody notices it in conversation, which is precisely why a marked written sample is worth more than an hour of talking at the start of an arrangement.

What Higher Level candidates must actually do with the two literary works

  • Read the works in German on a schedule from DP1, not from summaries in DP2
  • Build the register for discussing narrative perspective, structure and imagery
  • Practise on unseen extracts, because the assessed extract cannot be anticipated
  • No prepared analyses and no scripts; those are malpractice, not preparation

The literary requirement is the part of German B Higher Level that families understand least and that costs the most when neglected. Two works originally written in German are studied across the course, and the Individual Oral is built on an extract from one of them. The student is not writing a literary essay; the demand is to discuss a passage in German, connecting it to the work as a whole and to wider ideas, in a recorded conversation with their teacher.

That demand needs three things a conversation class never supplies. First, the works actually read, in German, slowly, with the vocabulary of the text absorbed rather than skimmed. Second, a register for talking about writing: narrative voice, structure, imagery, how a scene is built. Most fluent speakers, including heritage speakers and transfer students, have never used that register in German and reach for English concepts translated badly. Third, practice on extracts the student has not pre-prepared, because the extract in the assessment will be unseen.

The honest boundary is worth stating here because this is where offers of help become offers of malpractice. A tutor may teach the vocabulary of literary discussion, work through extracts the student has not seen, ask the questions an examiner might ask, and give feedback on the student's own notes. A tutor may not supply a prepared analysis, a script for the oral, or a set of answers for a passage the student will meet in the assessment room. The first list raises a mark. The second is academic malpractice under IB rules and the consequence falls on the student.

05

Keeping German alive in a city where nothing outside the lesson is in German

  • Twenty minutes of self-chosen German reading a day beats a weekly grammar hour
  • German audio with no attached task builds listening tolerance for the receptive paper
  • One written paragraph a day, corrected weekly, generates usable error data
  • Plan for the long summer: morphology degrades faster than vocabulary

A German B student in Dubai hears German in two places: the classroom and, for some, at home. English runs everything else, Arabic is on every sign, and the incidental exposure that a student in Europe gets for free does not exist here. That absence is the single biggest structural disadvantage for German B candidates in this city, and it is also the cheapest thing to fix, because it needs attention rather than money.

What works is boring and specific. Twenty minutes of German reading a day, chosen by the student rather than assigned, beats an hour of grammar once a week for building the structural range that the written task rewards. German audio during the school run, with no comprehension task attached, builds the listening tolerance the receptive paper assumes. Writing one paragraph a day about something that happened, corrected weekly rather than daily, produces more usable error data than any worksheet. None of this is tutoring, and all of it multiplies what tutoring achieves.

The seasonal risk is the long summer. Six or seven weeks with no German, in a language with the morphological load German carries, costs more than it would cost in Spanish or French: the endings go first and the confidence goes with them. Short maintenance sessions through August, or simply a reading commitment, is the difference between restarting in September and continuing. Families who travel in term time face the same problem in a smaller version, and the error log is what makes the resulting gaps findable rather than mysterious.

06

Heritage speakers, and the placement conversation nobody wants to have

  • Heritage profile: strong speaking and listening, weak reading and formal writing
  • German A is the first-language route and the only one counting towards the bilingual diploma
  • School-supported self-taught German A is demanding and needs a frank reading-stamina check
  • Bring a marked diagnostic to the coordinator rather than an argument

A fluent heritage speaker in German B is a genuine problem and it is usually discussed too late. Language B is an acquisition course. A student who grew up speaking German at home may be substantially beyond what the course assumes in speaking and listening, and substantially below it in reading and formal writing. The result is a lopsided profile: comfortable in the oral, exposed in the receptive paper, and inconsistent in the written task where register and accuracy are assessed rather than fluency.

There are two legitimate directions. If the school offers German A: Language and Literature, that is where a genuinely first-language speaker belongs, and it is the only German route that can contribute towards the bilingual diploma. Few Dubai schools timetable it, and some can offer a school-supported self-taught Standard Level option instead, which is demanding and needs a realistic conversation about reading stamina before anyone commits. The alternative is German B done properly, with the reading and writing deficit treated as the actual syllabus.

What a tutor should not do is help a family engineer a placement. The coordinator decides, the IB's own rules on appropriate placement govern it, and the useful contribution from outside is evidence: a marked written task, a timed reading score, and an honest note on what the student can and cannot do. Take that to the school. We will produce it; we will not argue a case to a school on a family's behalf, and we would be worth less if we did.

07

German after the Diploma: what the next requirement actually is

Families often choose German B with a German-speaking university in mind, and the requirement at the far end is not the one they expect. German universities set their own admission and language rules, and they generally ask for a recognised proof of German proficiency for German-taught programmes, assessed through tests such as TestDaF or the DSH, or through recognised certificates at the level the programme specifies. A Group 2 Diploma subject and a language-proficiency certificate are different instruments, and one does not automatically substitute for the other.

The practical sequence is to check the individual university and programme, and the central application service where one applies, rather than relying on a general rule. Requirements differ between a German-taught degree and an English-taught one, between universities, and sometimes between faculties inside a university. Where a school-leaving qualification needs assessing for direct entry, that is also a university-level question with a published answer. None of this is something a tutoring provider decides, and no tutoring is required for any of it.

What German B does contribute is the substance those tests measure: reading unfamiliar academic text, writing in a formal register, and listening to German that was not produced for a classroom. A student aiming at a German-taught degree is better served by Higher Level with the two literary works taken seriously than by Standard Level with a certificate bolted on at the end. The table sets out the routes and what to verify for each, with the verification always pointing at the institution rather than at us.

Ramadan, the Dubai calendar and when German revision actually happens

  • Ramadan: post-Iftar slots, shorter sessions, consolidation rather than new grammar
  • February break: the natural window for a timed receptive paper clinic
  • HL literary reading belongs in DP1, not in the final term
  • Summer: maintenance sessions, because German endings degrade fastest over a gap

Revision plans written in September assume a school year that Dubai does not have. Reduced school hours during Ramadan, the Eid holidays, a mid-term break in February, and the long summer all land on the Diploma calendar, and a two-year language course absorbs them badly if nobody plans around them. German is more exposed than most subjects, because morphological accuracy degrades over a gap in a way that content knowledge does not.

Ramadan is the one most often handled badly by tutoring providers. Sessions scheduled for late afternoon during fasting hours are the worst possible slot for sustained concentration, and cancelling the month outright costs a beginner or a Higher Level literary reader more than it saves. The arrangement that works is a move to post-Iftar timing by agreement, with shorter sessions and lighter cognitive load: reading and listening rather than new grammar, consolidation rather than new material.

The rest of the calendar needs the same kind of planning. February half-term is the natural slot for a receptive paper clinic, because it sits far enough before the exam period for the findings to be actionable. The Higher Level literary reading belongs in DP1 and the first term of DP2, not in the final weeks. The summer wants maintenance rather than progress. Mapping the tuition plan onto the actual Dubai school calendar at the start of DP1, rather than booking a weekly slot and hoping, is the single administrative step that saves the most wasted hours.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Dubai

German B requests reach us from across Dubai, and what differs by area is the shape of the week rather than the teaching. These are the patterns behind the scheduling conversations we have most often.

Jumeirah 1, 2 and 3

A long-settled expatriate belt with several German-speaking households and short school runs, so weekday sessions at 4.30pm are workable. Students here often have German-speaking friends nearby, which helps fluency and does nothing for written accuracy or reading.

Oud Metha, Zabeel and Al Jaddaf

Close to the older school corridor and to Dubai's German-curriculum provision, which is where many German B transfer students in the city come from. Traffic on Sheikh Rashid Road makes late-afternoon in-home visits unreliable and makes a fixed online slot the stable option.

Al Barsha 1, 2 and 3

Dense IB territory with several Diploma cohorts inside a few kilometres, so German B candidates here are competing for the same small pool of local tutors before mocks. Booking the slot in the autumn term rather than the spring is the practical lesson.

Downtown Dubai and DIFC

Apartment living, parents with long office hours, and students who get home late. Evening sessions after 7pm are more common here than anywhere else in the city, and recorded oral practice has to be scheduled around shared living space.

Dubai Hills Estate and The Springs

Villa communities with gated access and long internal roads, which is where visiting-tutor arrangements quietly lose fifteen minutes at each end. Weekend morning sessions work well here and suit the slower, heavier work that case and word-order repair requires.

Umm Suqeim and Al Sufouh

Several IB and British schools within a short radius and a high proportion of students sitting two languages beyond English. Counting total weekly language minutes before adding German tuition is particularly worthwhile for families in this belt.

Mirdif and Dubai Festival City

Mixed curriculum catchment, smaller IB cohorts per school, and German B sets that can be as small as five or six students. Individual feedback inside the school day is limited by the arithmetic rather than by willingness, which is the usual trigger for outside help here.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Al Barsha, Emirates Hills and the Dubai Hills corridor

The heaviest concentration of Diploma candidates in the city, and the belt where Group 2 demand spikes after the DP1 end-of-year report. Students we support attend schools across this corridor, and German B enquiries here are most often about Higher Level literary preparation.

Al Jaddaf, Umm Suqeim and Dubai Festival City

Schools in this belt include bilingual provision alongside the IB programmes, so a German B set here may include students who have had German as a medium of instruction rather than as a subject. That history changes the diagnosis completely and is worth stating in a first enquiry.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Say which of the three profiles your child is

Transfer from German-medium schooling, long-term school learner, or heritage speaker at home. If you are not sure, say that too and send a recent piece of German writing. The profile decides the first six weeks of work, and getting it wrong is the most common reason German tuition in this city produces a pleasant relationship and a static grade.

  2. 02

One diagnostic session, before any teaching

A short written task, a timed reading section, and five minutes of unprepared speech, marked and returned with the error classes named. It takes an hour, it is yours to keep, and it will tell you whether the issue is case, range, register or reading. No teaching happens until that evidence exists.

  3. 03

Split the work into the three jobs

Weekly accuracy repair, Higher Level literary preparation as a term-length block, and a receptive clinic placed near the February break. Buying them separately costs fewer total hours than one open-ended weekly arrangement, because each has its own natural length and stops when it is done.

  4. 04

Fix the slot around the real Dubai week

After the school run, before the evening collapses, on Gulf Standard Time, with Ramadan timing agreed in advance rather than improvised and summer maintenance decided in May. Scheduling is the quiet reason most tutoring arrangements fail here, and it is settled in one conversation.

  5. 05

Review on error classes, not on impressions

Each month, a summary showing which error classes have cleared, which are persisting and which are new. That is what a review should turn on. If the classes are not moving, we change the approach or the tutor rather than adding hours, and if the honest answer is fewer hours, we say so.

Transfer students, school learners and heritage speakers need different work, and German tuition that starts with vocabulary helps only one of them. One diagnostic hour sorts it, and the finding is written down in terms a parent can use at the next school meeting.

Error classes tracked, not accuracy described

Case, declension, word order, register, orthography and structural range are logged separately, so a monthly summary shows what has cleared and what has not. General comments about accuracy improving are the main reason families cannot tell whether German tuition is working.

Higher Level literary work treated as a real requirement

Two works in German and an oral built on an unseen extract is a specific demand that conversational fluency does not cover. We buy it as a term-length block with a reading schedule, and we do not supply prepared analyses or scripts, which is where parts of this market cross into malpractice.

Built for a city with no German outside the lesson

Dubai gives a German B student almost no incidental exposure, so the plan includes what happens between sessions: daily reading, untasked audio, a paragraph a day. Those habits cost nothing and determine how much the paid hours achieve.

Scheduled around the actual Dubai calendar

Ramadan sessions move to post-Iftar timing with lighter content, the February break takes the receptive clinic, and summer gets maintenance rather than silence. Plans that ignore the local calendar lose weeks that nobody budgeted for.

Clear about what we are not

No home visits in the UAE, no regulator approval or examination-board partnership claimed, no promised grades, no predicted scores, no finished coursework, and no IB exam date on the page because none could be verified for this project. What a tutor may and may not do is stated rather than implied.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

How much German does my child need before starting IB German B in Dubai?+

German B assumes prior study rather than fluency, so two or more years of the language as a school subject is the usual entry point, and the placement decision belongs to the school's Diploma coordinator. What matters more than the number of years is the shape of what exists: a student with accurate but narrow German is in a better position than one with fluent but unmonitored German, because range is easier to build than accuracy is to retrofit. Send a recent piece of written German with any enquiry; it says more about readiness than a description of how long the subject has been studied.

Is German B Higher Level realistic for a student who left German-medium school at 14?+

Often yes, and the deciding factor is reading rather than speaking. Higher Level requires two literary works originally written in German and an Individual Oral built on an unseen extract from one of them. A student who left German-medium education at 14 usually has the spoken fluency and may never have read a novel in German for study. If the reading schedule starts in DP1 and the register for discussing writing is built deliberately, Higher Level is a reasonable choice. If the works are met in the final term, Standard Level done well is the better outcome.

Which literary works are studied in IB German B Higher Level?+

The works are chosen by the school from the options the course allows, so there is no fixed national list and two Dubai schools may study entirely different pairs. Ask the subject teacher which two works your child's class is studying and when each will be read, because that schedule is what a tutoring block should be built around. A tutor who arrives with their own preferred texts rather than working with the school's choices is adding reading load rather than preparing the student for the assessment they will actually sit.

My child speaks German at home — is German B the right course?+

It may not be, and this is worth raising with the coordinator early. Language B is an acquisition course, and a heritage speaker is often beyond it in speaking and listening while being behind it in reading and formal writing. The usual result is a lopsided profile: comfortable in the oral, exposed in the receptive paper. Where a school offers German A: Language and Literature, that is the route for a genuine first-language speaker, and it is the only German option that can contribute towards the bilingual diploma. Bring a marked written task and a timed reading score to that conversation.

Where do German B students lose the most marks in the written task?+

In four places, consistently. Case endings after prepositions that take either accusative or dative. Adjective declension, where the ending depends on gender, case and the preceding article. Verb position in subordinate clauses, where English word order transfers across and produces German that is comprehensible and clearly wrong. And register, with du and Sie mixed inside one piece, or spoken contractions in formal writing. The first three take weeks to months of corrected writing. Register usually takes two or three sessions, which makes it the best-value fix available in this subject.

Does German B use the current German spelling conventions?+

Yes, current standard orthography applies, which catches a specific group of students in Dubai: those who have practised from older textbooks, from family-owned books, or with a tutor working from pre-reform material. The ß and ss conventions changed, and writing by the older rules costs a small but avoidable number of marks in the written task. It is a one-session fix followed by a proofreading habit. It is also invisible in conversation, which is why a marked written sample at the start of an arrangement is worth more than an hour of talking.

How do we keep German going in Dubai when nobody at home speaks it?+

With small daily habits rather than more paid hours. Twenty minutes of self-chosen German reading a day builds the structural range the written task rewards, faster than a weekly grammar session. German audio during the school run, with no comprehension task attached, builds the listening tolerance the receptive paper assumes. One written paragraph a day about something ordinary, corrected weekly rather than daily, produces more usable error data than any worksheet. In a city with no incidental German, those habits determine how much the tutoring achieves.

Can a German B tutor help with the Higher Level Individual Oral?+

Within clear limits, yes. A tutor may teach the vocabulary of literary discussion, work through extracts the student has not pre-prepared, ask the kinds of question an examiner asks, coach the timing so the discussion is not squeezed, and give feedback on the student's own notes. A tutor may not supply a prepared analysis, write a script, or rehearse the specific extract the school will use. The second list is academic malpractice under IB rules and the consequence falls on the student rather than on the tutor who offered it.

Will IB German B meet a German university's language requirement?+

Not automatically, and this needs checking programme by programme. German universities set their own admission and language rules, and German-taught programmes generally ask for a recognised proficiency result from a test such as TestDaF or the DSH, or a certificate at the level the programme specifies. A Group 2 Diploma subject and a proficiency certificate are different instruments. Check the individual university, the specific programme and the central application service rather than relying on a general rule. What German B supplies is the underlying skill those tests measure.

Is the workload gap between German B SL and HL as large as people say?+

The weightings are identical — a quarter for the written task, half for the receptive paper, a quarter for the oral — so the gap is not in the mark scheme. It is in the two literary works and the denser reading. Reading two books in German across two years is a real addition to a timetable already carrying five other subjects and the core. For a student who reads willingly, Higher Level is manageable. For one who does not read in any language, Standard Level with serious accuracy work usually produces a better Diploma total.

How many German B sessions a week does a Dubai Diploma student need?+

One a week is the normal shape for accuracy repair, with a short written task due between sessions so there is something to mark. Higher Level candidates add a term-length literary block rather than a second weekly hour, and most students want a short receptive clinic near the February break. That pattern uses fewer total hours than an open-ended weekly arrangement running for two years, because each job has a natural length and stops when it is finished rather than when the term ends.

Can German lessons move to post-Iftar timing during Ramadan in Dubai?+

Yes, and that is the arrangement we recommend rather than pausing the month. Late-afternoon sessions during fasting hours are the worst slot for sustained grammar work, and cancelling outright is costly in a language where accuracy degrades over a gap. The workable version is a later start after Iftar, shorter sessions, and lighter cognitive load: reading and listening rather than new material, consolidation rather than new structures. Agree the timing before Ramadan begins rather than improvising it in the first week.

Does IB Gram send a German tutor to our home in Dubai?+

No. IB Gram runs no home visits anywhere in the UAE; that service exists only in India. German B teaching reaches Dubai families as one-to-one live video on Gulf Standard Time, with marked work and the error log kept in a shared file. For this subject the trade is a good one. German B teaching is a narrow specialism, Higher Level literary preparation narrows it further, and the chance that the right person for your child's profile happens to live a short drive away in this city is small.

What should a German B tutor show us after one term?+

A monthly summary by error class, showing which of case, declension, word order, register, orthography and structural range have cleared, which are persisting and which are new. Plus the marked written tasks those findings came from, and for Higher Level candidates a record of which literary extracts have been worked through. That is the useful evidence. A term of positive verbal feedback with nothing written down is the most common thing families receive and the least possible to act on.

Can one tutor cover German B and the Arabic our school requires?+

In practice, no, and it is better not to try. Arabic in a Dubai private school is a mandatory subject under KHDA requirements with its own curriculum, its own streams for Arab and non-Arab students, and its own language of instruction rules; German B is a Group 2 Diploma course. The skills, the material and the assessment have nothing in common. What is worth doing is counting the total weekly language minutes your child already carries across English, Arabic and German before any tuition is added, because that total is usually higher than the timetable suggests.

Start with the diagnosis, not the timetable

German B in Dubai fails for a predictable reason: three different kinds of student share one class, and tuition bought without a diagnosis defaults to vocabulary work that helps only one of them. One diagnostic hour — a written task, a timed reading section, five minutes of unprepared speech — tells you whether the real issue is case, range, register or reading, and it is yours to keep whatever you decide next. Send the school, the level, the profile you think fits and the weekly windows that survive the school run, and you will get a named German B teacher, a slot on Gulf Standard Time and a 30-minute trial at no charge. Teaching runs online, one-to-one, with no home visits in the UAE.
