IB DP Extended Essay Home Tutor in Dubai

An IB DP Extended Essay home tutor in Dubai is usually hired for one of two reasons: a research question that will not hold 4,000 words, or a supervisor whose feedback has run out. This page takes the component apart - the five criteria and the marks behind each letter, the 34-mark scale, the reflections form, what counts towards the word limit - and says exactly which of those a session can fix. Lessons are one-to-one over live video, scheduled on Gulf Standard Time.

  • Marked against criteria A to E with the mark allocation named, not general comments
  • Sessions scheduled around Dubai school hours and your supervisor's deadlines
  • Delivered online over live video; home visits are an India-only service
  • A tutor reads, questions and teaches; the student researches and writes

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

The Extended Essay is marked out of 34, and most families never see the breakdown

The letter grade is what appears on the transcript, so that is what Dubai parents ask about. Underneath it is a 34-mark scale split across five criteria, and the split is the most useful thing a family can know. Criterion A, focus and method, carries six marks. Criterion B, knowledge and understanding, carries six. Criterion C, critical thinking, carries twelve. Criterion D, presentation, carries four. Criterion E, engagement, carries six and is awarded from the student's three recorded reflections rather than from the essay at all.

Read that list again and the strategy becomes obvious. More than a third of the available marks sit in a single criterion that rewards analysis and the evaluation of evidence, and almost a fifth sit in a form most students fill in the week before submission. Meanwhile presentation, the thing students spend whole evenings on, is worth four. A student polishing formatting while Criterion C sits at a third of its potential is spending time in the wrong place, and no supervisor has the hours to keep pointing that out.

Which brings us to what an IB DP Extended Essay home tutor in Dubai is actually for. The supervisor is the right person for subject judgement and the official record, and the IB's guidance limits total supervision to a small number of hours across the whole project, including the three reflection sessions. That is enough for direction and nowhere near enough for drafting support. The gap is real, legitimate, and where outside help belongs: reading a draft against the criteria, pressing on a research question until it narrows, and making sure the reflections say something assessable.

This page is built around the component rather than around the city, because the component is what fails. Below you will find the criteria with their marks and the specific ways each one leaks; the research question problem, which caps more essays than any other single factor; what does and does not count towards the 4,000 words; how the reflections are assessed and why the form is not administration; the published mark bands behind each letter; what the Dubai market charges for this work and who published each figure; and how the essay interacts with UAE Ministry of Education equivalency and university applications from here.

Delivery, stated plainly. Home tutoring is the phrase Dubai parents search, and the market reality is covered in full further down: what an in-home tutor charges in this emirate, what travel does to a weekday evening, how families weigh it. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai. Home visits are a service we run only in India. Dubai families are taught one-to-one over live video, and for a research essay the format carries an advantage that is specific rather than rhetorical: the work is a document, the tutor's comments live in it, and the version history shows exactly how the argument developed and who moved it.

One honesty note before the detail. Nothing on this page is an offer to produce assessed work. The Extended Essay must be the student's own research and the student's own prose, the reflections must record their own thinking, and the authenticity declaration at submission is theirs to sign. A tutor who edits an essay into their own voice has not helped; they have created a malpractice risk that lands on the student. Where the line sits is set out explicitly in its own section.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Independent research is built across the IB continuum, and each programme leaves a student with a different half of the skill. Below is where each one helps and where it leaves a gap that shows up in a 4,000-word essay.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13 · DP1 and DP2

Diploma Programme

The Extended Essay runs across both DP years: subject and topic chosen late in DP1, first reflection shortly after, research through the summer and the first DP2 term, submission before the exam session. It is externally assessed, graded A to E, and pairs with Theory of Knowledge in the matrix that awards up to three of the 45 diploma points. Students also sit internal assessments in six subjects and complete CAS, which is why the essay timetable collides with everything else.

In Dubai the collision is sharper than most families expect, because the DP timetable here also carries the Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies lessons KHDA requires of every private school regardless of curriculum. Supervisor meetings get squeezed into break periods, and the summer between DP1 and DP2 - when most of the reading should happen - is also when a large share of Dubai families travel for six or seven weeks.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11 · MYP 1-5

Middle Years Programme

The MYP personal project is the closest thing to rehearsal the IB offers: a self-directed piece with a process journal, a product and a report. Students who took it seriously arrive at the Extended Essay already knowing that a project needs a narrow aim and a record of decisions. The gap MYP leaves is academic apparatus - sustained engagement with published sources, and a citation habit strong enough to survive 4,000 words.

A number of Dubai schools run MYP through Year 11 rather than switching to IGCSE, and their students usually handle the reflections better because the personal project journal taught them to write about their own process. Students arriving in DP1 from an exam-only Year 11 often write their first reflection as a summary of what they did rather than as an account of what they decided.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

The CP core includes a reflective project rather than the Extended Essay. It is shorter, differently assessed and tied to the student's career-related study, so it does not substitute for an Extended Essay in a diploma application. The reason it belongs here is that Dubai families occasionally compare the two routes during a difficult DP1, and the research component is often the trigger for that conversation.

Only a handful of Dubai schools offer CP, and any move between programmes is governed by registration deadlines your DP coordinator holds. A tutor's job in that discussion is to describe the research requirement accurately and then send you back to the school, not to advise on a registration decision.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1 to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

Listed for continuity rather than support. The PYP exhibition in Year 6 is where IB students first run an inquiry of their own and then answer questions about it in public, which is structurally the same demand the Extended Essay makes eight years later. Parents who sat through a PYP exhibition evening recognise the viva voce immediately.

Dubai has a deep PYP intake and a lot of movement between schools at Year 7, so plenty of DP students here did PYP at a different school from the one supervising their essay. It makes no difference to the assessment; it does mean the research habit may have been built somewhere nobody in the current school remembers.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

An Extended Essay is written in a DP subject, and each subject fails in its own particular way. The grid below is the set of routes Dubai students most often take, with the specific thing that costs marks in each.

Biology

HL or SL subject route

Popular and risky. Essays collapse when the student collects their own data without a controllable variable, or reviews literature without a question. Criterion C needs evaluation of method and limitation, not a description of results. Local fieldwork in Dubai conditions needs a realistic plan before any data is gathered.

Chemistry

HL or SL subject route

Laboratory access is the binding constraint in most Dubai schools, which pushes students towards database or literature-based questions. Those can score highly, but only with genuine evaluation of source reliability. Marks vanish when the essay becomes a textbook chapter on a mechanism.

Physics

HL or SL subject route

The strongest Physics essays narrow to one measurable relationship and treat uncertainty seriously. The weakest pick a topic from popular science writing and have no way to analyse anything. Criterion A is where the damage is done, because the method was never viable.

Mathematics

HL or SL subject route

Under-chosen and often rewarding for Analysis and Approaches students. The trap is an essay that reproduces known proofs without an argument of its own. Examiners want mathematical reasoning applied to a question the student poses, with the limits of the model discussed.

History

HL or SL subject route

The single most common route and the one with the most predictable failure: a question so broad that 4,000 words can only summarise. Historiography is the lever for Criterion C - weighing how different historians have read the same evidence, rather than narrating events.

Economics

HL or SL subject route

Works best on a question with real data and a theoretical frame that can be tested against it. UAE and wider Gulf data is accessible and under-used. Essays lose marks by drifting into business commentary or by applying a diagram without evaluating whether it fits the case.

Business Management

HL or SL subject route

Requires a researchable question about an organisation and evidence beyond the company's own publicity. Primary research in Dubai is possible but needs permissions arranged early. The commonest loss is an essay that reports a company's strategy instead of analysing it.

Psychology

HL or SL subject route

Attracts students who then write a literature summary. The mark comes from comparing studies on methodology - sample, design, replication, cultural generalisability - and ethical constraints rule out most of the primary research students imagine doing.

English A: Language and Literature

Category 1, 2 or 3 route

Category choice matters and is frequently got wrong, which costs Criterion A immediately. A tight question about technique in two or three texts beats a thematic survey of five. Close textual evidence is the engine of Criterion C here.

Language B and Language ab initio

Category 1, 2 or 3 route

The essay must be written in the target language for most categories, and the language itself is not separately assessed - but imprecise expression drags knowledge and critical thinking down with it. Source selection in the target language is the practical bottleneck.

Visual Arts

HL or SL subject route

Needs a question that can be answered by analysing works, not by describing an artist's life. Dubai and Sharjah give students access to exhibitions and collections that make genuine first-hand analysis possible, which examiners notice.

World Studies

Interdisciplinary route across two subjects

A global issue examined through two DP subjects, with a local case and a genuine integration of both lenses. High ceiling, high difficulty: essays fail when the two subjects sit in separate halves rather than informing each other, and the local case is the usual anchor that saves it.

Geography

HL or SL subject route

Spatial questions with primary or secondary data work well, and the UAE offers urban-growth and water-resource questions that are genuinely open. Marks are lost when the essay has no spatial dimension and becomes general environmental commentary.

Global Politics

HL or SL subject route

Needs a political-science concept doing real work rather than a current-affairs narrative. Criterion C rewards weighing competing theoretical readings of the same case, and the hardest discipline is keeping the scope narrow enough to argue.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Extended Essay help is deadline-shaped rather than open-ended, so most Dubai families buy one of four blocks. All are delivered one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

Research question clinic

One or two sessions, booked before anything else. The student brings a topic; the session converts it into a question that 4,000 words can actually answer, tests whether the sources and data exist, and checks the subject and category choice against what the essay will have to do. This is the cheapest intervention available and the one that changes the final grade most, because Criterion A failures are structural and cannot be repaired later.

  • Topic narrowed until a 4,000-word answer is possible
  • Source and data availability checked before any reading
  • Subject and category confirmed against the question
  • Written out as a question the supervisor can approve

Draft reading against the criteria

Three to six sessions through the main drafting term. Each draft comes back marked criterion by criterion, with the mark allocation named, so the student can see that Criterion C is carrying twelve marks and their analysis section is carrying two paragraphs. Comments ask questions rather than supplying prose. Between sessions the student rewrites; nothing is rewritten for them.

  • Each criterion scored and explained separately
  • Analysis-to-description ratio measured, not described
  • Citation and referencing checked as the draft grows
  • Every version retained in a shared document

Reflections and viva preparation

Short, targeted work on the part of the component most students under-prepare. The three reflections carry Criterion E and total no more than 500 words, so each sentence has to do something: a decision, a difficulty, a change of direction. Viva voce preparation rehearses talking about the research honestly, which is also the strongest protection a student has if authorship is ever queried.

  • Each reflection written about decisions, not activities
  • The 500-word total treated as a design constraint
  • Viva answers practised on the student's own process
  • Nothing drafted for the student; prompts only

Final cut and citation audit

A two or three session block in the submission term. The essay is over length - almost all of them are - so the work is deciding what leaves without losing analysis, confirming what does and does not count towards the 4,000 words, and auditing every citation against the bibliography. Presentation is only four marks, but they are four marks nobody should lose on a contents page.

  • Word count rules applied before anything is cut
  • Description cut ahead of analysis, deliberately
  • Every in-text citation checked against the bibliography
  • Formatting and contents checked against Criterion D

01

The five criteria and where each one leaks marks

Every Extended Essay is marked on the same five criteria regardless of subject, and the mark allocation is public. Knowing the allocation changes how a student spends the last fortnight, and knowing the characteristic failure of each criterion changes how they spend the first one. The table below sets out both.

Criterion A, focus and method, is worth six marks and is decided almost entirely by the research question. A question that is too broad cannot be answered in 4,000 words, so the essay describes instead of arguing, and the damage then spreads into Criterion C. Examiners see this constantly: an essay that is competent, readable and capped at a C because the question was never answerable.

Criterion B, knowledge and understanding, is worth six and is the one most students already satisfy. It rewards correct use of subject-specific terminology and sources that belong to the discipline. Students lose marks here mainly by writing outside the subject they registered - an Economics essay that turns into business commentary, a Psychology essay that reads as sociology.

Criterion C, critical thinking, is worth twelve, more than a third of the total, and is where the grade is actually decided. It rewards analysis, discussion and evaluation. A paragraph that reports a finding earns little; a paragraph that weighs two findings against each other and names the limitation of both earns a great deal. The fastest diagnostic available is to count paragraphs: if more than half of them report rather than evaluate, the essay cannot reach the top bands no matter how well written it is.

Criterion D, presentation, is worth four - layout, structure, contents page, consistent referencing apparatus. It is the smallest allocation and the one students over-invest in. Criterion E, engagement, is worth six and comes from the three reflections rather than from the essay, which means a fifth of the available marks sit in a 500-word form that many students write in one sitting the night before. Those six marks are the cheapest on the paper and the most frequently abandoned.

02

The research question decides the grade before any research happens

  • Narrow enough that 4,000 words can answer it, not survey it
  • Answerable with sources the student can actually reach
  • Contestable, so the conclusion is an argument rather than a statement
  • Settled before the DP1 summer, not after it
  • Written in the student's own words and defensible in the viva voce

If a session can only do one thing, it should fix the question. A narrow, arguable research question makes the rest of the project difficult but possible. A broad one makes it comfortable and caps it, because 4,000 words spread across a large topic can only summarise, and summary does not score in Criterion C.

The test we use is blunt. Can the question be answered with evidence the student can actually obtain, in roughly 3,000 words of analysis, in a way that someone could reasonably disagree with? If the answer to any part of that is no, the question is not ready. "To what extent did trade shape the development of the Gulf?" fails all three. "To what extent does the archaeological evidence from one specific site support claims about pre-oil trade routes?" passes, because the evidence base is finite and the conclusion is contestable.

Subject-specific versions of the same problem recur predictably. A Biology question needs a variable the student can control or a literature base they can genuinely evaluate. A Chemistry question has to survive the laboratory access their school will actually grant, which in most Dubai schools is limited, so database-led questions are often the honest choice rather than the lazy one. A History question needs historiography available in a language the student reads. An English question needs a textual feature narrow enough to track across two or three texts.

Timing matters as much as wording. The question should be settled before the summer between DP1 and DP2, because that summer is when the reading has to happen, and in Dubai it is also when a large share of families are away for six or seven weeks. A student who leaves Dubai in June without a settled question returns in late August with nothing done and one term to produce 4,000 words.

This is also where a tutor is most clearly within the honesty line. Pressing a student with questions until their own topic narrows is teaching. Handing them a research question is not, and a supervisor will usually notice, because the first reflection will not sound like the student. The output of a clinic session should be a question in the student's own words that they can defend in the viva.

03

What counts towards the 4,000 words and what does not

Almost every Extended Essay arrives at the submission term over length, and the cutting is done badly because nobody has checked the rules first. The word limit applies to the essay itself, and examiners are not required to read beyond it, which means an argument sitting in word 4,200 has effectively been deleted by the student rather than by the examiner.

The elements that count are the ones carrying the argument: the introduction, the body, the conclusion, and quotations inside the text. Footnotes count when they carry content rather than a reference, which is the rule most often misunderstood. A footnote saying "Smith, 2019, p.42" does not count; a footnote containing a sentence of explanation does. Students who move chunks of argument into footnotes to beat the limit are usually discovered, and the material is lost either way.

The elements outside the count are the title page, contents page, bibliography, reference list, appendices, maps, charts, diagrams, tables of raw data, and the reflections. Appendices are the most abused of these. An appendix exists for material an examiner may consult, not for analysis the student could not fit. Examiners are not obliged to read appendices at all, so an argument placed there is an argument not marked.

The practical sequence for cutting is: apply the rules first and see what the real count is, then remove description before analysis, then remove the second example wherever two make the same point, then tighten the introduction, which is almost always a third longer than it needs to be. Never cut Criterion C material to protect background context. Twelve marks sit in the analysis and six in knowledge.

Two smaller rules worth knowing. The reflections have their own ceiling of 500 words across all three, and that limit is separate from the essay. For most Language B and Language A category routes the essay is written in the target language, and the word limit is the same, which makes the drafting discipline tighter than students expect.

WORD-COUNT RULES FOR THE EXTENDED ESSAY - VERIFY AGAINST THE CURRENT EE GUIDE BEFORE SUBMISSION

Introduction, body and conclusionYesThis is the assessed argument; cut description here before anything else
Quotations inside the textYesLong quotations are expensive; paraphrase with citation where the wording is not the point

Appendices, maps, charts, diagrams and raw data tablesNoAn examiner need not read these, so never place analysis here
The three reflections on the progress formNoThey have their own separate 500-word ceiling and carry Criterion E
04

The reflections carry six marks and are not administration

Criterion E is worth six of the 34 marks and is assessed entirely from the reflections form, completed across three recorded sessions with the supervisor. The total across all three is capped at 500 words. A student who writes all three in one sitting the week before submission is handing back a fifth of the paper, and it happens often enough that it is the single most predictable loss in the whole component.

The reflections are assessed on engagement with the research process, which means decisions rather than activities. "I read several articles about my topic and found them useful" records an activity. "I had intended to compare two data sets but the second had been collected on a different basis, so I narrowed the question to the first and treated comparability as a limitation" records a decision, a difficulty and a change of direction in one sentence. Examiners can tell the difference instantly.

The three sessions sit at natural points: early, when the question and approach are being settled; in the middle, when the research is underway and something has usually gone wrong; and at the end, in the concluding interview often called the viva voce. Each is a conversation with the supervisor, and the form records what the student took from it. Because the sessions are spaced, reflections written retrospectively tend to read as though nothing ever changed - which is itself evidence that they were written retrospectively.

There is a second function to the form that matters more than the marks. It is the record of the student's own engagement with their own project, and it is the first document anyone looks at if authorship is questioned. A student whose essay is strong and whose reflections are thin and generic has created a question about their work that they will have to answer. One whose reflections track real decisions has a straightforward answer ready.

A tutor's legitimate role here is narrow and useful: explain what the criterion rewards, ask what actually changed in the last month, and point out when a sentence is describing instead of deciding. The words must be the student's. We do not draft reflections, and a provider who offers to is offering something that will damage the student who accepts it.

THE THREE REFLECTION SESSIONS - WHAT EACH ONE IS FOR

05

What each letter is worth, and the failing condition

The 34 marks convert to a letter through published bands: A is 27 to 34, B is 21 to 26, C is 14 to 20, D is 7 to 13 and E is 0 to 6. Confirm the current table against the Extended Essay guide your DP coordinator holds before planning around it, but the shape is stable and the shape is what matters.

Two things follow from the bands. The first is that the gaps are wide, so single-criterion improvements move letters. Picking up four marks in Criterion C and two in Criterion E - a better analysis section and reflections written properly - is a six-mark swing, which is enough to cross a boundary from most starting positions. That is why diagnosing against criteria rather than giving general feedback is worth paying for.

The second is the failing condition. A grade E in the Extended Essay, or in Theory of Knowledge, is a failing condition for the diploma whatever the subject points total. Since E is 0 to 6 marks out of 34, it is genuinely hard to reach - but a non-submission or an essay that is substantially off-subject gets there. Every year a few students with good subject grades discover this late.

The letter also pairs with the Theory of Knowledge grade in the core points matrix, which awards between zero and three of the 45 diploma points. The arithmetic is worth doing before buying hours: if the Extended Essay sits at a high C and TOK at a secure B, the hours belong to the essay, because moving the essay by one letter is likely to be the cheaper point. If the essay is already a strong B and TOK is unaddressed, the reverse applies.

One practical note for Dubai families applying to UK universities. Offers are made on predicted points, and the Extended Essay predicted grade feeds the core points inside that prediction. A predicted grade set early in DP2 on the basis of a thin first draft is a prediction that follows the student through the whole application cycle, which is an argument for front-loading the work rather than for a final-term rescue.

EXTENDED ESSAY MARK BANDS - CONFIRM AGAINST THE CURRENT EE GUIDE
GradeMarks out of 34What it typically reflectsWhat usually moves it up one band
A27-34A narrow question answered with sustained evaluation and genuine reflectionsAlready at the ceiling; protect it by not losing Criterion D or E marks
B21-26Sound research and analysis that stops short of consistent evaluationRewriting reporting paragraphs as evaluative ones in the analysis section
C14-20Competent knowledge with description where analysis belongsNarrowing the question and building a real limitations discussion
D7-13A broad question, thin sourcing and reflections written at the endFixing the question if time allows, and writing the reflections properly
E0-6Substantially off-subject, severely under-developed or not submittedA failing condition for the diploma; escalate with the supervisor immediately
06

Academic honesty: the Extended Essay is where it is tested hardest

The Extended Essay carries the highest integrity risk of any DP component, because it is long, it is written mostly out of sight, and the market contains providers who will sell a finished one. Research for this project found a site advertising completed internal assessments at a published price. Buying assessed work is malpractice under IB rules, the consequence falls on the student rather than the seller, and it can end a diploma.

So the boundary needs stating rather than implying. A tutor may teach research method, explain each criterion and its mark allocation, press on a research question until the student narrows it themselves, read a draft and say which paragraphs report rather than evaluate, explain citation conventions, point out where a source is not reliable, and rehearse the viva voce. All of that is teaching, and none of it touches authorship.

A tutor may not supply a research question, write or rewrite any part of the essay, restructure it by moving the student's text around for them, draft reflections, or provide a model essay to be adapted. Our working test: if a sentence in the final essay could not have been produced by the student and cannot be explained by them in the viva, the line has been crossed regardless of intent. We do not produce assessed work, and we say so before a first session rather than after an awkward request.

Two further rules worth knowing. Published syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes and subject guides are not ours to distribute, so we reference and link them rather than supplying copies - reproducing them is a copyright matter. And where a student has used a generative tool at any stage, that use has to be declared according to their school's policy; a tutor's job is to point them to the policy, not to help conceal anything.

The protective value of working honestly is underrated. A student with a full version history, three reflections that track real decisions, and the ability to talk about their own method for ten minutes has nothing to fear from an authenticity question. That record is a by-product of being taught properly, and it is the main reason we keep every draft in a shared document rather than emailing files back and forth.

07

What Extended Essay support costs in the Dubai market

Most pages ranking for this search publish no price at all, and the ones that do quote US dollars. Below are the AED bands visible in this market as of October 2026, with the provider that published each figure named, organised by the stage of the project rather than by tier - because Extended Essay help is bought in blocks around deadlines, not by the year. These are market rates. They are not an IB Gram price list; our rate is quoted after the free trial, once the subject match is known.

The stage framing matters for a reason that saves money. A research question clinic is one or two hours and it is the highest-return purchase in the whole component, because Criterion A failures cannot be fixed later. Draft reading is the largest block and the one where a subject match actually matters, so it is worth paying a specialist rate for. Reflections and viva work is short. The final cut is short. A family that buys those four blocks spends materially less than one buying a weekly hour for eighteen months, and typically gets a better result because the work lands where the deadlines are.

For reference against the wider market: EdFlik advertises from AED 45-65 an hour and Tutopiya from AED 33-52 at the budget end; Unitors publishes IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200; TutorChase publishes AED 270; Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table puts in-home visits at AED 180-350 and specialist support at AED 200-450 or more; BartyED publishes AED 650. Monthly packages in this market run around AED 799 for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 for four two-hour in-home sessions.

Three cautions on reading any of those numbers. Ask whether VAT is included before comparing two quotes, because providers here are inconsistent about it. Treat a rate justified by examiner experience as a claim about a specific person and ask how it was verified; examiner status confers no access to marking decisions or grade boundaries, and anyone implying otherwise is selling something that does not exist. And be wary of a provider who will not name the subject of the person reading a science essay, because a generalist reading a Chemistry draft cannot assess Criterion B.

For context on the household budget: KHDA confirmed in May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not rise for the 2026-27 academic year, under Dubai's second economic incentives package. Against a flat fee bill, a few deadline-shaped blocks across two years is a finite and visible line rather than an open commitment.

Online one-to-one against the in-home option for a research essay

The phrase parents search is home tutor, so the comparison deserves a straight answer. An in-home tutor in Dubai is a genuine option and for some needs it is the right one; it costs more per hour because the drive is inside the price. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai, and home visits are a service we run only in India. For the Extended Essay specifically, the online format has advantages that are structural rather than promotional.

The first is subject match. An Extended Essay is read properly only by someone who knows the subject's conventions - what counts as evidence in History, what a reliable database is in Chemistry, what historiography or replication actually means. The chance that such a person lives within a comfortable drive of Nad Al Sheba and is free at 6pm on a Wednesday is low. Removing the travel constraint changes the question from who is nearby to who can read this subject.

The second is that the work is already a document. A research essay lives in a file with comments, tracked versions and a bibliography that has to stay consistent across months. Reading it together on screen, with the tutor's comments stored beside the student's text, is simply the native format for the task. It also produces the version history that protects the student's authorship, which a kitchen-table conversation does not.

The third is the calendar. The Extended Essay timetable in Dubai runs through the DP1 summer, when many families are abroad for weeks, and through a DP2 term containing mocks, internal assessment deadlines and in some years Ramadan. Online sessions follow a family to another time zone, shift to post-Iftar slots for a month, and can be made up on a Saturday. None of that is available from a tutor whose availability depends on their own commute.

What in-home does better is worth saying plainly rather than hiding: a younger student who needs an adult physically present to stay on task, or a household where screen-based study is hard to supervise. That rarely describes a seventeen-year-old managing a 4,000-word research project. If you need someone at the door, that is a legitimate requirement and we would rather tell you now that this is not the service for it.

The Extended Essay, UAE equivalency and university applications from Dubai

Dubai families apply in several directions at once, and the Extended Essay sits differently in each. For UK applications it feeds the core points inside a predicted total and gives a genuine subject-specific talking point in a personal statement, particularly where the essay is in the subject being applied for. For North American applications it is evidence of independent research that admissions readers recognise. For UAE universities the relevant process is Ministry of Education equivalency, and the essay plays no direct part in it - which is worth knowing precisely because competitor pages imply otherwise.

On equivalency, the sourced position is this. For the British track, students must show one accredited subject at Advanced Level at a grade no lower than E, or two accredited subjects at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade, and must pass five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade no lower than E or grade 3. Arabic and Islamic education are not included among those five required subjects. One ranking competitor states that UAE candidates must take six IGCSE subjects, which is wrong; the published rule is five.

For the American track, English proficiency requires a score of 5 in the academic IELTS, 61 in the TOEFL iBT, or 450 in the reading and writing section of the SAT, and mathematics requires at least 450 in the SAT Math test before applying. No IB points threshold is published in the source we were able to verify, so this page states none. If you need the IB figure, read it on moe.gov.ae or the emirate's attestation authority page, or ask your school's university counsellor to confirm it in writing.

Two things we will not do. We will not describe equivalency or attestation as something IB Gram performs, arranges or guarantees - it is a government process with an official channel, and the channel is the place to do it. And we will not suggest that tutoring is required for equivalency, university admission or school progression. It is not, and implying it would be a false-urgency claim about a regulatory process.

What a tutor can usefully do is align the research with the application. A student intending to read Economics who has written a narrow Economics essay with real Gulf data has something concrete to discuss at interview and in a personal statement. A student who picked a topic because it sounded impressive usually has nothing to say about it six months later. That alignment is a conversation worth having in DP1, when the subject choice is still open, rather than in DP2 when it is not.

Where we tutor

Dubai communities, and what each one asks us for first

Extended Essay enquiries arrive from across Dubai, and the first request differs by community in a way that tracks school cohort and supervisor load rather than geography alone. Here is the pattern we see.

Arabian Ranches and Arabian Ranches 2

Large DP cohorts in nearby schools and a parent group that compares supervisors closely. The common first ask is a second reader for a History or Economics draft where the supervisor's allotted hours have already been used up.

Al Furjan and Discovery Gardens

Mixed school attendance and long commutes to several DP schools, so after-school time is short. Requests here lean towards research-question clinics booked in a single evening rather than standing weekly slots.

Jumeirah Golf Estates and Dubai Sports City

A newer DP population with a high proportion of science-route essays. The recurring problem is laboratory access for a Chemistry or Biology question, and the first session is usually about redesigning the question around what is actually available.

Dubai Marina and Jumeirah Beach Residence

Apartment living, high turnover, and students who often arrive mid-DP1 from another country. Essays here frequently need a subject change confirmed with the supervisor before any further work is worth doing.

Dubai Silicon Oasis and Academic City

Close to university libraries and several large schools, which makes secondary-source access easier than elsewhere in the city. Requests skew towards Psychology and Business Management, where source quality is the main constraint on Criterion C.

Nad Al Sheba and Meydan

Villa communities with a long drive to most DP schools and limited local tutor supply. Families here value a fixed evening slot that cannot be lost to traffic, and reflections work is often done in short sessions after dinner.

The Greens, The Views and Barsha Heights

Dense, walkable, and heavily populated with DP2 students in the final submission term. The typical booking is a short block: final cut to 4,000 words, citation audit, and viva voce preparation.

Mirdif and Al Khawaneej

Established eastern communities with large school cohorts and a strong preference for post-Maghrib sessions. During Ramadan nearly all of these bookings move to post-Iftar slots, which is why online scheduling matters here.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Dubai schools with large DP research cohorts

Where a school runs a big DP cohort, supervisor load is the constraint rather than supervisor quality: one teacher may hold six or eight essays alongside a full teaching timetable. Students we support attend schools across this group, and the request is almost always for a second reader rather than a replacement.

  • Dubai American Academy
  • Universal American School Dubai
  • Raffles World Academy

Dubai schools with newer or growing DP provision

Newer DP cohorts mean fewer supervisors who have taken an essay through a full cycle, and that shows up as late subject decisions and thin first reflections. Students we support attend schools in this group, and early research-question work pays for itself here more than anywhere else.

  • Fairgreen International School
  • Hartland International School
  • Sunmarke School
  • Dwight School Dubai
  • Swiss International Scientific School Dubai

Eastern and central Dubai

Long-running DP programmes with crowded timetables and a high proportion of students taking the science and mathematics routes. Students we support attend schools across this area, and laboratory access is the question that shapes most first sessions.

  • Deira International School
  • GEMS Modern Academy
  • Greenfield International School
  • Uptown International School

Schools are named here purely as context for families comparing local provision. IB Gram has no affiliation with, and claims no endorsement from, any school mentioned on this page.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the question and the current draft

A short form: DP year, school, essay subject and category, the current research question in full, and the supervisor's next internal deadline. Attach whatever exists, including a draft you think is too rough to send. The rougher it is, the more useful the first reading.

  2. 02

Free trial with the criteria open

Sixty minutes with the student's own material on screen. The tutor scores what exists against criteria A to E, names which criterion is costing the most marks, and gives two specific changes. You keep the written diagnosis whether or not you book again. No card is taken to arrange it.

  3. 03

Choose a block, not a subscription

We recommend one of four blocks - question clinic, draft reading, reflections and viva, final cut - based on where the essay actually is. You see the recommended hours and what each block is meant to deliver before paying for anything.

  4. 04

Work in the student's own document

Drafts stay in one shared file with full version history. Comments are criterion-tagged and phrased as questions. Between sessions the student rewrites; nothing is rewritten for them, which is both the honest position and the only one that produces a defensible viva.

  5. 05

Re-score at the end of each block

Each block closes with a fresh criterion-by-criterion score against the first one, so improvement is a number rather than an impression. If a criterion has not moved, we say which and why, and change the approach or the tutor.

  6. 06

Stop when the essay is ready

Extended Essay help should end. When the final version is cut to length, cited consistently and the reflections are genuinely written, the work is done and we say so. Carrying a standing weekly slot past that point is a cost without a purpose.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Marked against the criteria, with the marks named

Every draft comes back scored criterion by criterion with the allocation stated - six, six, twelve, four, six. You can see where the marks are and where they are missing, which is not the same as being told the essay is coming along nicely.

The question gets fixed before the research starts

A broad research question caps a grade no matter how good the writing is, and it cannot be repaired in the final term. The cheapest session in this component is the one that narrows the question, so we push families to buy it first and sometimes buy nothing else.

Subject-matched reading, not generalist feedback

A Chemistry essay and a History essay fail differently, and only someone inside the discipline can assess subject terminology and source reliability. Online matching means the reader is chosen for the subject rather than for the drive to your community.

Reflections treated as six real marks

Criterion E is a fifth of the paper and most students abandon it. We work on the reflections as assessed writing, within the 500-word total, about decisions rather than activities - and we never draft them, because they must be the student's own.

Authorship protected by the way we work

One shared document, every version retained, comments phrased as questions rather than rewrites, and viva rehearsal on the student's own process. A student who has worked this way can answer any authenticity question in a straightforward way.

Rates you can audit

Every AED figure here is attributed to the provider that published it with October 2026 as the as-of date, split by project stage so you can see what the component actually costs. Our own number is quoted after the free trial, once the subject match exists.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

What can an Extended Essay tutor do that my child's supervisor cannot?+

Hours, mainly. The supervisor holds subject judgement and the official record, and IB guidance limits total supervision across the whole project to a few hours including the three reflection sessions. That is enough for direction and far short of what drafting support requires, especially where one teacher is supervising six or eight essays alongside a full timetable. A tutor adds reading time: criterion-by-criterion marking of successive drafts, pressure on the research question, and preparation for the concluding interview. The supervisor stays the authority on the subject and on the forms, and a good tutor tells the student to take disputed points back to them.

How many marks is each Extended Essay criterion actually worth?+

Thirty-four in total, split five ways: Criterion A focus and method, six marks; Criterion B knowledge and understanding, six; Criterion C critical thinking, twelve; Criterion D presentation, four; Criterion E engagement, six. Criterion C alone is more than a third of the paper, and Criterion E comes from the three reflections rather than from the essay. The practical consequence is that evening spent on formatting is competing for four marks while the analysis section is competing for twelve. Confirm the current allocation against the Extended Essay guide your DP coordinator holds, then plan the remaining weeks around where the marks actually are.

My daughter's research question feels too broad. Can that still be changed in DP2?+

Often yes, and it is usually worth doing. Narrowing a question in the first DP2 term normally means keeping most of the reading and changing the frame, which is far cheaper than it sounds. The decision has to go through the supervisor, because the subject and question are on the record. What cannot be fixed late is a question requiring data or sources the student has no way of obtaining - that needs a genuine change of direction, and the interim reflection is the right place to document it. A single clinic session is usually enough to establish which of the two situations you are in.

Do footnotes and appendices count towards the 4,000-word limit?+

Footnotes count when they carry content or explanation, and do not count when they contain only a reference. Appendices do not count, but examiners are not required to read them, so analysis placed in an appendix is analysis that will not be marked. The title page, contents page, bibliography, reference list, maps, charts, diagrams and raw data tables also sit outside the count. The reflections have their own separate ceiling of 500 words in total. Check the current rules in the Extended Essay guide before cutting anything, because students who cut without checking almost always remove analysis they did not need to lose.

How are the three reflections assessed and how long should they be?+

They carry Criterion E, worth six of the 34 marks, and the three together are capped at 500 words. They are assessed on engagement with the research process, which in practice means decisions rather than activities: what was intended, what went wrong, what changed as a result. Writing all three in one sitting near submission is the most common error, because retrospective reflections read as though nothing ever changed and examiners recognise that immediately. Write each one close to the session it records. A tutor can explain what the criterion rewards and point out where a sentence describes instead of deciding, but the words must be the student's own.

What mark range does a grade A Extended Essay need?+

The published bands are A at 27 to 34 marks, B at 21 to 26, C at 14 to 20, D at 7 to 13 and E at 0 to 6, out of the 34 available. Confirm the current table against the Extended Essay guide your school holds. The useful feature of those bands is their width: a six-mark swing, which is four marks gained in critical thinking plus two in engagement, crosses a boundary from most starting positions. That is why criterion-level diagnosis is worth more than general feedback - it tells you which four marks are realistically available in the time left.

Is a grade E in the Extended Essay enough to fail the whole diploma?+

Yes. A grade E in the Extended Essay, like a grade E in Theory of Knowledge, is a failing condition for the IB Diploma whatever the subject points total. Because E covers 0 to 6 marks out of 34, reaching it requires something substantial to have gone wrong - a non-submission, an essay significantly outside the registered subject, or a project that never developed past a first draft. It happens most often to students who lose the summer between DP1 and DP2 and then run out of term. If a supervisor signals that risk, escalate it with the school immediately rather than booking tutoring and hoping.

Which subject should my son choose for his Extended Essay?+

One he is taking, is reasonably strong in, and where the question he wants to ask can actually be researched with sources or data he can reach. Those three conditions eliminate most bad choices. Science routes depend on laboratory access, which in many Dubai schools is limited, so a database or literature question is frequently the honest option rather than a compromise. History needs historiography available in a language he reads. World Studies has a high ceiling and a high failure rate, because it requires two subjects to inform each other rather than sit in separate halves. The supervisor has the final word on registration.

Can a tutor help with a Chemistry Extended Essay if our school limits laboratory time?+

Yes, and that constraint is usually the first thing a session addresses. Limited laboratory access in Dubai schools pushes students towards questions built on published data, computational work or a literature base, and those can score at the top of the range provided the evaluation of source reliability is real. What fails is an experimental question designed around laboratory time the school was never going to grant - Criterion A collapses and Criterion C has nothing to work with. Redesigning the question around available evidence early is far cheaper than discovering the problem in the second term of DP2.

Will using a tutor create an academic honesty problem for the essay?+

Not if the boundary is kept, and the boundary is clear. A tutor may teach research method, explain the criteria, question a draft, point out where a paragraph reports instead of evaluating, explain citation conventions and rehearse the concluding interview. A tutor may not supply the research question, write or rewrite any part of the essay, restructure the student's text for them, or draft the reflections. Our test is whether the student could produce and explain every sentence themselves. Tell the supervisor a tutor is reading drafts; the schools we deal with are comfortable with it when the record shows the work developing.

When should the Extended Essay actually be started in a Dubai school year?+

Subject and topic late in DP1, question settled before the summer, and the bulk of the reading done across that summer. In Dubai this matters more than elsewhere because many families travel for six or seven weeks, so a student who leaves without a settled question returns with nothing done and one crowded term remaining. The DP2 autumn then collides with internal assessment deadlines in several subjects and, in some years, Ramadan. Your supervisor sets the internal deadlines and they are the ones to plan backwards from; we build a schedule that marks the weeks you already know will be lost.

What happens in the viva voce and can my child prepare for it?+

It is the concluding interview with the supervisor, held after the final version is submitted, and it is the basis of the third reflection. The student talks about what they researched, what proved difficult, what they would do differently and what they learned about the process. It also allows the supervisor to confirm the work is the student's own. Preparation is legitimate and simple: rehearse talking about real decisions rather than rehearsing a script. A student who has worked honestly finds it straightforward, which is one more reason the version history and the reflections are worth keeping properly as you go.

How much does Extended Essay help cost in Dubai, by stage?+

Market rates as of October 2026, published by the providers named: a research question clinic at the mid-market online band of AED 150-300, where Unitors publishes IB from AED 200; draft reading at specialist rates of AED 200-450 or more, where TutorChase publishes AED 270 and Bestimate 200-450+; reflections, viva and final-cut work back at AED 150-300. In-home equivalents run AED 180-500 with travel inside the rate. Premium tutors marketed on examiner experience reach AED 650. Those are market figures rather than our prices; ours is quoted after the free trial, and ask any provider whether VAT is included.

Does the Extended Essay count towards UAE Ministry of Education equivalency?+

No, and it is worth being exact because some pages imply otherwise. Equivalency is a government process with its own requirements. For the British track, the published rule is five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that count, plus one A-Level at E or two AS-Levels at E. For the American track, English is satisfied by IELTS 5, TOEFL iBT 61 or SAT 450 in reading and writing, and mathematics by SAT Math 450 or above. No verified IB points threshold is published here; read it on moe.gov.ae or ask your school's counsellor. We describe the process and never perform or guarantee it.

Can my child have Extended Essay sessions while we are abroad for the summer?+

Yes, and the DP1 summer is the single most productive block for this component. Because lessons are online, a standing slot moves with the family to another time zone rather than stopping for seven weeks. Summer work is well suited to what the essay needs at that point: source gathering, reading notes organised against the question, and a first attempt at a structure. Returning to Dubai in late August with a draft section written is a different DP2 from returning with a topic. We do not send tutors to a UAE address - home visits are an India-only service - so nothing about travel interrupts the arrangement.

Send the question first, the draft second

The most useful thing you can do today takes five minutes: send your child's research question exactly as it currently stands, the essay subject, and the supervisor's next internal deadline. Book the free trial and bring whatever draft exists, however rough. You will leave that session with a criterion-by-criterion score out of 34, the name of the criterion costing the most marks, and two changes that would move it. If the answer is that the question needs narrowing and nothing else, we will tell you that and you can act on it without buying a block. If more is needed, you will see the recommended hours before paying anything.
