IB DP Internal Assessment Home Tutor in Dubai

Hiring an IB DP Internal Assessment home tutor in Dubai is rarely about one piece of work. A DP2 student carries six of them, each with its own criteria, its own word or page limit and its own deadline, and three of those deadlines usually arrive in the same fortnight. This page names the components subject by subject, gives the criterion letters with their marks, and says what one session can realistically fix. Teaching is one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

  • Criterion letters and mark allocations named for every IA we support
  • Scheduling built around your school's internal deadlines, not a generic calendar
  • Online one-to-one over live video; home visits run only in India
  • We read and question the student's own work and never produce any part of it

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

Six components, six sets of criteria, one crowded term

Internal Assessment is a single phrase covering around fifteen different tasks. In the sciences it is a scientific investigation of up to 3,000 words marked on four criteria worth six marks each. In Mathematics it is an exploration of roughly twelve to twenty pages marked on five criteria worth twenty marks in total. In History it is a historical investigation of about 2,200 words with its own three-criterion structure. In Economics it is a portfolio of three commentaries with a word ceiling on each. In Language A it is an oral. The only thing these share is the word internal and the fact that your child's teacher marks them before the IB moderates a sample.

That variety is why generic help does so little. A tutor who is good at essays can tidy prose in a History investigation and will be no use at all on the data-analysis criterion of a Physics report, where marks come from uncertainty treatment and the handling of anomalous points. So the first decision a Dubai family makes is not whether to hire an IB DP Internal Assessment home tutor in Dubai but which subject's IA is costing the most marks, and then whether the person being hired knows that subject's criteria by letter.

The second decision is about timing, and it is the one families get wrong. IA deadlines are set internally by your child's school, and they cluster. A DP2 student in a Dubai school typically faces the sciences investigation, a Mathematics exploration, a History or Economics component and the Extended Essay final submission inside a six-week window, while also sitting mocks. Nothing about that is unusual and nothing about it is fixable in the final fortnight. What is fixable is the order the work is done in, which is a planning conversation worth having in the DP1 summer.

The third is about marks rather than quality. Every IA criterion has a published mark allocation, and the allocations are uneven. In the sciences investigation, evaluation carries the same six marks as research design, yet students routinely submit reports with a full method section and three sentences of evaluation. In the Mathematics exploration, use of mathematics carries six of twenty marks while presentation carries four, and students reliably over-invest in the appearance of the document. Reading the allocation before the final week changes where the hours go.

This page is organised around those components rather than around the city, because the components are what fail. You will find the IA map across subjects; the criterion letters and marks for the two most commonly tutored components; the five failure modes that recur across every subject; the deadline collision set out backwards from the exam session; the honesty boundary, which matters more here than anywhere else in the DP; what this work costs in the Dubai market with every figure attributed; and why the Dubai school timetable makes the squeeze worse than it needs to be.

On delivery, plainly. Home tutoring is the phrase parents search, and the in-home market in this emirate is described properly further down, including what it costs and what travel does to an evening slot. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai. Home visits are a service we run only in India. Dubai students are taught one-to-one over live video, which for IA work is the natural format: the report, the spreadsheet, the graphs and the criteria are all on the same screen, and the comment history records exactly whose thinking moved the draft.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Internally assessed work exists at every level of the IB, and each stage trains a different part of the skill. Below is what each programme gives a student and what it leaves them short of when the DP components arrive.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13 · DP1 and DP2

Diploma Programme

Every DP subject carries at least one internally assessed component, marked by the teacher against published criteria and then moderated by the IB on a sampled basis. Weightings differ by subject and by syllabus version, commonly sitting between a fifth and a third of the final subject grade. Most components are started in DP1 and submitted during DP2, alongside the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and CAS.

The Dubai complication is timetable pressure. KHDA requires Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies in every private school regardless of the licensed curriculum, so DP lesson time is tighter here than families assume. Teachers end up giving IA instruction in fragments, and the school's internal deadlines are set early enough to allow for marking and moderation, which compresses the student's actual working window.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11 · MYP 1-5

Middle Years Programme

MYP is almost entirely internally assessed against four criteria per subject, which is the best possible rehearsal for the DP. Students who have been marked against criterion A to D for five years arrive understanding that a mark comes from a descriptor rather than from effort. The personal project adds a process journal, which is the habit that later protects an IA from authenticity questions.

Several Dubai schools run MYP to Year 11 and then move straight into DP1. Those students generally handle the criterion language more comfortably than classmates who came through IGCSE, where the mark comes from a mark scheme on an exam paper. The IGCSE route builds exam technique instead, which helps elsewhere and not here.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

CP students take DP subject courses and therefore do sit the internal assessments attached to them, alongside a reflective project rather than the Extended Essay. The practical difference is load: fewer DP subjects means fewer IA deadlines competing in the same term, which is sometimes the reason a family considers the route in the first place.

A small number of Dubai schools run CP. Any change of programme is governed by registration deadlines your DP coordinator holds, and the honest role for a tutor in that conversation is to describe the assessment load accurately and then send the decision back to the school.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1 to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

PYP has no external examinations at all, so every judgement is internal and based on evidence of learning gathered over time. The Year 6 exhibition is the first full inquiry a student runs and defends. Parents who want to know where the DP's insistence on documented process comes from will recognise it there.

Dubai has a large PYP population and considerable movement between schools at Year 7, so many DP students here learned their first research habits at a different school from the one now setting their IA deadlines. It makes no difference to the marking; it does mean nobody in the current school remembers how they were taught.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Below is the Internal Assessment component for the DP subjects Dubai students most often ask about, with the specific thing that costs marks in each. Confirm limits and weightings against your subject's current guide, because they change between syllabus versions.

Biology

SL and HL

A scientific investigation of up to 3,000 words on four criteria. Biology reports fail on research design more than anything else: too many uncontrolled variables, a sample size that cannot support a conclusion, and a method written after the data was collected rather than before.

Chemistry

SL and HL

The same four-criterion investigation. Laboratory access decides what is possible in most Dubai schools, which makes database and computational investigations common. They score well when source reliability is genuinely evaluated and badly when the report becomes a textbook account of a mechanism.

Physics

SL and HL

Where uncertainty handling separates bands. Marks arrive from propagated uncertainties, sensible graph choices and an evaluation that names a limitation in the apparatus rather than in the student. A neat report with no error analysis stalls in the middle of data analysis.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

SL and HL

An exploration of roughly twelve to twenty pages on five criteria totalling twenty marks. The commonest loss is use of mathematics: work at or below course level, or at course level without being correct throughout. Personal engagement is the second, because students pick a topic they do not care about.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

SL and HL

The same criteria, applied to modelling and data. Real data sets are easy to find and easy to misuse: a regression run without checking whether the model fits earns little under reflection. Gulf economic and transport data is under-used and well suited to this route.

History

SL and HL

A historical investigation of about 2,200 words across source identification and evaluation, the investigation itself, and a reflection on method. Students lose marks by evaluating sources in a detached opening section that never informs the argument that follows.

Economics

SL and HL

A portfolio of three commentaries, each on a separate article and each with a tight word ceiling. Marks go missing when the diagram is decorative, when the article is too old or too thin to analyse, and when evaluation is replaced by a summary of what the article said.

Business Management

SL and HL

A research project based on a real organisation and real evidence. Permissions for primary research in Dubai need arranging early. The frequent failure is a report that describes a company's strategy accurately and never applies a tool to evaluate it.

Psychology

SL and HL

An experimental study replicating a published study, with ethical constraints that rule out most of what students first propose. Marks come from the quality of the replication and the discussion of its limitations, not from an interesting hypothesis.

Geography

SL and HL

A fieldwork report built on data the student collected. Dubai offers genuinely good urban and coastal fieldwork questions. Reports fail when the method cannot answer the question, or when the data is presented without any spatial analysis.

English A: Language and Literature

SL and HL

An individual oral on a global issue, with extracts from two texts, plus an HL essay at higher level. The oral collapses when the global issue is too large to be visible in the extracts chosen, which is a selection problem rather than a delivery problem.

Language B

SL and HL

An individual oral based on stimulus material, assessed on language, message and interaction. Preparation that scripts an answer tends to score lower than preparation that builds the vocabulary to respond, because the interaction criterion rewards genuine exchange.

Visual Arts

SL and HL

An exhibition of resolved work with a curatorial rationale, alongside externally assessed components. The rationale is where marks move: it has to connect the works as a coherent body rather than describe each one in turn.

Computer Science

SL and HL

A solution developed for a real client with documented criteria for success. Students lose marks by building something impressive that no identified client needed, which undermines the planning and evaluation stages at once.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

IA work is bounded by a deadline, so it is bought in blocks rather than open-endedly. These four cover almost every request we receive, and all are taught one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

Method and design clinic, before data exists

One or two sessions at the point where a student has a topic and no viable method. For a scientific investigation that means fixing the independent variable, the controls and the number of trials before anything is measured. For an exploration it means checking the mathematics is above course level and actually available. This is the cheapest intervention in the whole component, because a design fault cannot be repaired after the data is collected.

  • Research question narrowed until the method can answer it
  • Variables, controls and sample size agreed before measurement
  • Equipment or data availability checked against the school's reality
  • Ethics and permissions flagged early where the subject requires them

Single-component block

Three to five sessions on one IA, from first draft to submission. Each draft comes back scored against the published criteria with the mark allocation named, so a student can see that evaluation is worth as much as research design and that their evaluation is currently three sentences long. Between sessions the student rewrites their own work; nothing is rewritten for them.

  • Criterion-by-criterion scoring on every draft
  • Specific target: which criterion, how many marks, by when
  • Word or page limit applied from the first draft rather than at the end
  • All versions kept in one shared document

Competing-deadlines plan

A single planning session plus light check-ins, for the DP2 student carrying three or four IA deadlines and the Extended Essay inside the same stretch. The output is an order of work: which component is closest to a band boundary, which can be finished quickly, which needs the laboratory booked now, and which weeks are already lost to mocks or travel. Some families need only this.

  • Every internal deadline listed with the school's own dates
  • Components ranked by marks available per hour of work
  • Laboratory, fieldwork and permission bookings sequenced first
  • Weeks lost to mocks, Ramadan or travel marked in advance

Final read before submission

One or two sessions in the week before a deadline. The work is a criterion audit rather than new content: is the evaluation doing anything, are the uncertainties propagated, is the word or page limit respected, is every source cited consistently, is the conclusion answering the stated question. Small and late, but it reliably recovers marks students were about to leave behind.

  • Each criterion checked against its descriptor one last time
  • Limits confirmed and over-length material identified
  • Citations and data presentation checked for consistency
  • No new content introduced, by design

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

The IA map: one phrase, fifteen different tasks

Parents often ask what the IA is, and the honest answer is that there is no such thing as the IA. There are internally assessed components, one or more per subject, each with its own name, format, limit and criteria. A DP2 student in Dubai is typically carrying six of them simultaneously. The table below is the map for the subjects we are asked about most.

Two features of that map matter more than the rest. The first is that the limits are real constraints rather than guidance. A 3,000-word scientific investigation is not improved by 3,600 words, and a Mathematics exploration that runs to thirty pages has usually buried its mathematics in commentary. Working inside the limit from the first draft is a skill, and it is one of the few things a tutor can teach quickly.

The second is that weightings vary by subject and by syllabus version. A component can be worth a different share at standard and higher level in the same subject, and the IB revises subject guides on a rolling cycle, so a figure accurate for one cohort can be wrong for the next. This page therefore names formats and criteria, which are stable, and tells you to confirm the weighting in your own subject's current guide. That is not evasion. A wrong percentage on a page like this leads a family to spend a term on the wrong component.

What the map is for is triage. Once you can see all six components side by side with their limits and their criteria, the question stops being which subject is hardest and becomes which component is closest to the next band for the least work. That is usually not the subject the student is most worried about. It is often the one where a thin evaluation section is costing marks that an afternoon could recover.

Moderation is the last piece worth understanding. The teacher marks, the school submits a sample, and the IB moderates that sample, which can move the whole cohort's marks up or down. This is why teachers in Dubai set internal deadlines well before any IB deadline, and why extensions are harder to obtain than students expect. The deadline on the school calendar is a marking deadline, not an administrative one.

The sciences investigation, criterion by criterion

The scientific investigation in Biology, Chemistry and Physics is marked on four criteria carrying six marks each, twenty-four in total. Because the weights are equal, the arithmetic is unusually clean: a student with a strong method and a weak evaluation is leaving a quarter of the component on the table, and the evaluation is the shortest section to fix.

Research design is where most Dubai students lose their first marks, and it happens before any measurement. The criterion rewards a focused research question, a method that could actually answer it, and controlled variables that are genuinely controlled. Reports written after the data was gathered read differently from reports planned in advance, and examiners and moderators recognise the difference instantly. A method invented retrospectively to explain existing numbers is the single most common structural fault we see.

Data analysis rewards correct processing, sensible presentation and the honest treatment of uncertainty. In Physics this means propagating uncertainties rather than quoting the instrument's precision once and forgetting it. In Chemistry it means processed values with units and appropriate significant figures. In Biology it means a statistical treatment that suits the data rather than the one the student has heard of. Graphs chosen to look impressive rather than to show the relationship cost marks here too.

Conclusion rewards an answer to the stated research question, supported by the processed data and placed in the context of accepted scientific understanding. The failure is a conclusion that restates the hypothesis and then asserts that it was supported, with no reference to the magnitude of the effect or to the comparison literature.

Evaluation is the cheapest six marks in the DP sciences and the most frequently abandoned. It rewards a discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of the method and realistic, specific improvements. "Human error" and "more trials" earn nothing. Naming the particular limitation of the particular apparatus, explaining how it would propagate into the result, and proposing a change that would actually address it earns a great deal - and it can be written in an evening by a student who knows what the descriptor asks for.

03

The Mathematics exploration and its twenty marks

The exploration is marked on five criteria worth twenty marks between them, and the allocation is uneven in a way that is worth knowing. Use of mathematics carries the largest share. Presentation and mathematical communication carry four marks each. Personal engagement and reflection carry three each. A student who spends a weekend on typesetting is competing for four marks while the six-mark criterion goes unaddressed.

Use of mathematics is the criterion that decides most grades. It asks for mathematics commensurate with the course, correct throughout, and thorough. Both halves of that bite. An exploration using only material from the first year of the course cannot reach the top band however elegantly it is presented, and an exploration reaching for advanced material it then applies incorrectly scores worse than a correct piece of course-level work. Analysis and Approaches students at higher level should be reaching beyond the syllabus carefully, not decoratively.

Personal engagement is where Dubai students most often lose marks that cost nothing to earn. The criterion rewards genuine evidence that the student chose this topic and did something of their own with it - their own data, their own question, their own attempt at something that did not work. A topic lifted from a list of exploration ideas reads as such, because there is no decision anywhere in the document.

Reflection asks for critical evaluation of the mathematics and the results as they develop, not a paragraph at the end. The strongest explorations reflect in place: a result appears, the student questions whether the model fits, tests it, and explains why they then changed approach. The weakest have a concluding section headed reflection which summarises what was done.

Mathematical communication and presentation are the remaining eight marks and they are genuinely gettable. Consistent notation, defined variables, labelled graphs, a coherent structure and no unexplained symbols. These are rules rather than skills, which makes them the fastest marks in the component to recover in a final read-through - and the ones most often lost by a student who ran out of time because the method was still changing in the final week.

04

The five ways an IA loses marks in any subject

  • A research question the available method cannot answer
  • Description where the criterion asks for evaluation
  • The word or page limit applied at the end rather than from the first draft
  • Three or four deadlines landing in the same six-week window
  • Never asking the subject teacher what a specific descriptor requires

Across every subject the same five faults recur, and they are diagnosable in a first session. Knowing them is useful for a parent because it separates problems that need weeks from problems that need an evening, and most families are told everything needs weeks.

The first is a question the method cannot answer. It affects sciences, Geography, Psychology and Business Management equally, and it is fatal because every later criterion depends on it. A question about an effect too small to measure with school equipment, or a company whose data is not public, produces a competent report with nothing to analyse. This is why the design clinic exists and why it has to come before data collection.

The second is description where evaluation belongs. It is the single most widespread fault in the DP, and it has a mechanical test: count the paragraphs that report something and the paragraphs that weigh something. If the first number is much larger, the component is capped regardless of presentation. The repair is slow but it is a repair, not a rewrite - the student learns to ask what follows from this and what would have to be true for it to be wrong.

The third is the limit, treated as an afterthought. A 3,000-word report cut down from 4,200 words has almost always lost its evaluation, because evaluation is the easiest section to compress. The same thing happens to the reflection in a Mathematics exploration. Writing to the limit from the start protects the sections that carry marks.

The fourth is deadline collision, which is a planning failure rather than an academic one. Three IA deadlines and an Extended Essay submission in one six-week window, overlapping with mocks, is the standard Dubai DP2 experience, and the students who come through it well are the ones who sequenced the laboratory bookings and the data collection in DP1. The fifth is silence: a student who has not spoken to the subject teacher about the specific criterion they are stuck on, because asking feels like admitting something. The teacher is the moderator of their own marks and is allowed to explain a descriptor. That conversation is free and it is frequently the whole solution.

05

The IA term counted backwards from the exam session

A forward-looking plan is useless for Internal Assessment, because the binding constraints sit at the back. Teachers need time to mark, schools need time to submit samples for moderation, and the IB sets upload deadlines ahead of the examinations. Everything else gets squeezed into whatever is left, which is why Dubai students experience the DP2 autumn and winter as one continuous deadline.

This page publishes no IB dates. The IB's own site blocks automated checking, so every date in this project would be second-hand, and a wrong date here would cost a family real planning time. The table below is therefore relative, and your DP coordinator holds the authoritative internal deadlines. One email to them produces a list worth more than any generic calendar.

The sequence that works runs like this. Laboratory time, fieldwork permissions and any primary research consents are arranged first, because they depend on other people and cannot be compressed. Data collection follows, finished well before the drafting window so a failed method can be repeated. First drafts are written inside their limits. Then the criterion-by-criterion read, then the evaluation and reflection sections written properly rather than hurriedly, then the final audit.

Two Dubai-specific collisions are worth planning around explicitly. The first is the DP1 summer, when many families are away for six or seven weeks; a student who has not collected data or settled a method before leaving loses the only uncommitted block in the two years. The second is Ramadan, when school days shorten and evening energy moves to after Iftar. Heavy drafting either side of it and lighter check-in sessions through it works better than pretending the month is normal.

The final constraint is mocks. School mock examinations usually sit inside the same window as IA deadlines, and the sensible response is to finish anything that can be finished before them rather than to plan to work through them. Students who go into mocks with two components submitted do noticeably better at both.

What a tutor may and may not do with an Internal Assessment

This is the component where the honesty line is tested hardest, because internally assessed work is produced out of sight over months and because the market contains providers who sell finished pieces. One site found during research for this project advertises completed internal assessments at a published price. Buying assessed work is malpractice under IB rules, the penalty falls on the student rather than the seller, and it can end a diploma. So the boundary belongs on the page in plain words.

A tutor may teach the subject content the component depends on, explain each criterion and what its descriptor actually requires, help a student test whether a proposed method can answer their question, teach the statistics or the uncertainty treatment, read a draft and say which criterion is underserved, point at a paragraph that reports rather than evaluates, explain citation conventions, and teach the same skills on a practice task the student will never submit. All of that is teaching, and authorship stays where it belongs.

A tutor may not supply a research question, hand over data, write or rewrite any section, restructure a student's text for them, produce a model report to be adapted, or fill in a reflection. Our working test is whether the student could have produced every sentence and could explain every choice if asked. We do not produce assessed work and we say so before a first session, not after an awkward request.

There is a second reason to care beyond the rules. A teacher who marks thirty of the same component knows what a student's own writing sounds like, and a draft that arrives suddenly polished invites exactly the conversation no family wants. Students who work in one shared document with a full version history have an easy answer: the record shows the argument developing across weeks, with the tutor's comments visible as questions rather than as text.

One more boundary worth naming: published syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes and subject guides are not ours to distribute. We cite them and link the official source rather than supplying copies. Where a student has used any generative tool in the course of their work, their school's policy governs how that is declared, and a tutor's job is to point them at the policy.

07

What IA support costs in the Dubai market

Below are the AED bands visible in this market as of October 2026 with the publisher of each figure named, arranged by the kind of IA work rather than by tier. Three of the six best-ranking pages for these searches publish no price at all and the rest quote US dollars, so a sourced AED table is the most useful thing this page can carry. These are market rates, not an IB Gram price list; our own rate is quoted after the free trial once the subject match is known.

The economics of IA help are different from subject tutoring, and the difference saves money. A design clinic is one or two hours and it protects the whole component, because a method fault cannot be fixed after data collection. A single-component block is three to five hours and is where subject specialism genuinely matters - a generalist cannot assess the data-analysis criterion of a Physics report. A final read is one or two hours at a general rate. A family buying those three things for two components spends less than a family buying a weekly hour across DP2, and usually gets more marks, because the work lands on the criteria instead of on the syllabus.

For context against the wider market: EdFlik advertises from AED 45-65 an hour and Tutopiya from AED 33-52 at the budget end; Unitors publishes IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200; TutorChase publishes AED 270; Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table puts in-home visits at AED 180-350 and specialist support at AED 200-450 or more; BartyED publishes AED 650. Monthly packages in this market sit around AED 799 for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 for four two-hour in-home sessions.

Three things to check before comparing two quotes. Whether VAT is included, because providers here are inconsistent. Whether the person reading a science or mathematics component actually teaches that subject, and how that was verified. And what any claim about examiner experience rests on - examiner status gives nobody access to marking decisions or grade boundaries, and a rate justified on that basis is a claim about a specific person that you are entitled to test.

A note on the household context: KHDA confirmed in May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not increase for the 2026-27 academic year, under Dubai's second economic incentives package. Against a flat fee bill, a handful of deadline-shaped IA blocks across DP2 is a visible, finite line rather than an open commitment, and it is worth planning as one.

Why online works better than a visiting tutor for IA work specifically

The search phrase is home tutor, so the comparison belongs on the page. An in-home tutor in Dubai is a real option that some families should take; the rate is higher because the drive is inside it. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai, and home visits are a service we run only in India. For Internal Assessment the online format wins on three specific grounds rather than on general preference.

The first is the artefact. IA work is a document, a spreadsheet and a set of graphs. Reading a Physics investigation properly means looking at the raw data, the processed columns, the uncertainty calculations and the graph together, and changing one to see what happens to another. That is a screen-sharing task. A printed draft on a dining table cannot show whether a propagated uncertainty was calculated or typed.

The second is subject depth at a specific criterion. The person who can tell a student that their statistical test does not suit their data, or that their exploration is working below course level, is a subject teacher of that subject. The probability that such a person lives within a short drive of Town Square or Dubai Investment Park and is free on a Tuesday evening is low. Online matching makes the pool everyone who teaches the subject rather than everyone who can reach the villa.

The third is the deadline shape. IA support is needed in bursts: two hours this week because the method needs fixing before the laboratory slot, nothing for a month, then three hours in the fortnight before submission. Booking bursts from a tutor whose income depends on standing weekly visits is awkward; booking them online is routine. During mocks, Ramadan or a family trip the pattern shifts again without anyone losing a slot.

Where in-home is genuinely better: a younger student who needs an adult present to stay on task, or a household where supervising screen work is difficult. That rarely describes a DP2 student processing their own data. If someone at the door is what you need, we would rather tell you now that this is not that service.

The Dubai timetable, the regulator, and the permit question parents should ask

Private schools in Dubai are regulated by KHDA, which u.ae describes as responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate. KHDA inspects annually and publishes a band from Outstanding down to Very Weak, which is a reasonable first filter for a family choosing a school and tells you nothing about how much IA instruction time a DP class actually receives.

That instruction time is squeezed by a real requirement. KHDA mandates Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, with implementation required from the start of the 2025-26 academic year. The guidelines calculate instructional time on a forty-minute lesson unit, allow schools to vary lesson length provided the weekly total is met, advise that no mandatory lesson runs shorter than twenty-five minutes, and require separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies because the curriculum expectations and language of instruction differ. Schools must also ensure teachers of Islamic Education and Arabic hold the appropriate KHDA approval for those subjects.

Stack that against six DP subjects with internally assessed components and the arithmetic explains the market. There is no spare lesson time in which a teacher can take thirty students through a criterion descriptor individually, so the explaining happens in written comments, and students who do not read comments well arrive in DP2 not knowing what evaluation means. Most of the demand we see in Dubai is that gap rather than subject weakness.

The regulator map differs across the country, which matters because Dubai families move. Abu Dhabi and Al Ain are regulated by ADEK, Sharjah by the Sharjah Private Education Authority, Ras Al Khaimah by its Department of Knowledge, and Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah by the federal Ministry of Education. Sharjah's and Ras Al Khaimah's authorities also approve tuition fees, curricula, programmes and assessment methods. IB Gram holds no permit, registration or authorisation from any of these bodies, and nothing here should be read as a regulator endorsing a tutoring service; a KHDA educational services permit is a specific licence for training institutes with premises in Dubai, which is a different thing entirely.

The question parents should actually ask concerns the tutor rather than the platform. Private tuition in the UAE runs on a work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged fifteen to eighteen. Individuals tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published anywhere official, so nobody should be quoting you an amount. MoHRE's own service page, Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, is the official route and lists a two-working-day completion time. In Abu Dhabi, ADEK's professional-ethics rules additionally bar school staff from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school - press-reported rather than quoted here, and worth checking against the current policy document. The practical consequence for a Dubai family is simple: never arrange for your child's own subject teacher to be paid to mark the component they will be marking officially.

Where we tutor

Dubai communities and the IA question each one arrives with

IA enquiries from across Dubai follow a readable pattern, driven by which schools a community feeds and what those schools can offer in laboratory and fieldwork terms. Here is what that looks like.

Palm Jumeirah and Al Sufouh

Small cohorts across several different DP schools, so requests rarely cluster by subject. The common thread is timing: parents here tend to contact us once two IA deadlines have already been missed and the school has written home.

Umm Suqeim and Al Safa

Long-established schools within a few minutes of each other and a well-informed parent group. Enquiries are precise, usually naming the subject and the criterion: data analysis in Physics, or use of mathematics in an exploration.

Jumeirah Park and Jumeirah Islands

Villa communities feeding a handful of large DP schools. Geography and Biology fieldwork questions come up more here than elsewhere, partly because families have the space and time for data collection at weekends.

Town Square and Remraam

Newer, more affordable communities with long school commutes and limited local tutoring supply. Online slots after 7pm are the norm, and the first request is usually a realistic plan across three competing deadlines rather than help with one.

International City and Dubai Festival City

Dense, diverse and feeding schools with very large DP cohorts, where a single teacher may be marking thirty investigations. Students here benefit most from a second reader who can explain what a criterion descriptor actually requires.

Dubai Investment Park and Green Community

A long way from most of the city, which makes the in-home tutor pool thin for any niche subject. Chemistry and Computer Science requests are common and almost impossible to match locally.

Al Barsha South and Arjan

Rapid growth, mixed school attendance and a high proportion of mid-year arrivals. The typical first session establishes which IA components the previous school had already started and what can still be used.

Dubai Creek Harbour and Ras Al Khor

A newer community with students travelling to established DP schools across the creek. Evening traffic makes a fixed online slot materially more reliable than a tutor arriving by car, which is the main reason families here book online.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Dubai schools with well-resourced science laboratories

Laboratory provision decides which scientific investigations are possible, and it varies more between Dubai schools than any published inspection band suggests. Students we support attend schools across this group, where experimental investigations are usually viable if booked early in the term.

Dubai schools with large DP2 cohorts

In a big cohort a single teacher may be marking a large number of the same component, which compresses feedback into written comments rather than conversations. Students we support attend schools in this group, and the request is nearly always for someone to explain what a descriptor means in practice.

Dubai schools with newer DP provision

Where a DP programme is young, fewer staff have taken a cohort through moderation, and internal deadlines are often set later than is comfortable. Students we support attend schools in this group, and early planning across competing components is where the value sits.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

List the components and their deadlines

A short form: DP year, school, the six subjects, which internally assessed components are outstanding, and the school's internal deadline for each. That list alone often reveals that the subject causing the most anxiety is not the one closest to a band boundary.

  2. 02

Free trial on the component that matters most

Sixty minutes on one real draft or method plan. The tutor scores it against the published criteria, names the criterion costing the most marks, and gives two changes. You keep the written diagnosis either way. No card is taken to book it.

  3. 03

Agree an order of work, not a subscription

We recommend a sequence across the outstanding components, ranked by marks available for hours spent, with laboratory and permission bookings placed first because they depend on other people. You see the sequence and the estimated hours before paying.

  4. 04

Work in the student's own files

Report, data and graphs stay in one shared location with version history. Comments are tagged to the criterion they concern and phrased as questions. Between sessions the student revises their own work; nothing is revised for them.

  5. 05

    Re-score before each deadline

Each component closes with a fresh criterion-by-criterion score against the first one, so improvement is a number rather than an impression. If a criterion has not moved, we name it and change the approach or the tutor.

  6. 06

Hand back the record and stop

When a component is submitted, that block ends. You keep the scored drafts, the session notes and the plan. If no component is near a boundary any more, we say so rather than carrying a standing slot into the exam term.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Criteria by letter, with the marks named

Four criteria at six marks each in the sciences investigation, five criteria totalling twenty in the Mathematics exploration. Every draft comes back scored against those descriptors so you can see which marks are missing rather than being told the work is progressing.

Triage across all six components

The first question is which internally assessed component is closest to the next band for the least work, which is frequently not the subject the student worries about. That ranking is free, happens in the first session, and sometimes means we recommend fewer hours than you expected.

Subject-matched at the criterion level

Only a Physics teacher can judge whether an uncertainty was propagated properly; only a mathematician can say whether an exploration sits above course level. Online matching picks the reader for the subject rather than for the distance to your community.

Design fixed before data exists

A method that cannot answer the question caps every criterion downstream and cannot be repaired after collection. The cheapest session in this component is the one that happens before the laboratory slot, and we push families towards it even when it means a smaller booking.

Authorship protected by how we work

One shared file, every version kept, comments written as questions rather than text. A teacher marking thirty of the same component notices sudden polish; a student with a visible development record never has that conversation.

Every rate attributed and dated

All AED figures on this page name the provider that published them, with October 2026 as the as-of date, split by the kind of IA work so you can see what each stage costs. Our own rate follows the free trial, once the subject match exists.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

What is an Internal Assessment and how much of the grade does it carry?+

It is a piece of work marked by your child's own teacher against published IB criteria, then moderated by the IB on a sampled basis. Every DP subject has at least one, and the format differs completely between subjects: a scientific investigation of up to 3,000 words, a mathematical exploration of around twelve to twenty pages, a historical investigation, an economics portfolio of three commentaries, or an oral. Weightings vary by subject and by syllabus version, commonly between a fifth and a third of the subject grade, so confirm your own figure in the current subject guide rather than relying on a number from a general page.

Which IA criteria carry the most marks in the DP sciences?+

In the current scientific investigation all four criteria carry six marks each, twenty-four in total: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. The equal weighting is the useful part. Evaluation is worth exactly as much as research design, yet most reports arrive with a detailed method and an evaluation of three sentences, which means a quarter of the component is sitting unclaimed. Evaluation is also the section a student can improve fastest, because it needs specific apparatus limitations and targeted improvements rather than new data. Confirm the criteria against your subject's current guide, as these changed with the recent syllabus revision.

My son's Physics investigation has no uncertainty analysis. Can that be fixed late?+

Usually yes, provided the raw measurements still exist with their instrument precisions. Propagating uncertainties through processed values, adding them to graphs and discussing what they mean for the conclusion is work that can be done on existing data in a session or two, and it sits in the data analysis criterion worth six marks. What cannot be fixed late is a method that never recorded enough information to propagate anything - no repeat readings, no instrument precision noted. That is a research design problem and the honest answer is a repeat run if the laboratory and the deadline allow it.

How long should a Mathematics exploration actually be?+

Guidance points to roughly twelve to twenty pages, and length is not where the marks are. Use of mathematics carries six of the twenty marks and asks for work commensurate with the course, correct and thorough. A thirty-page exploration usually indicates the mathematics has been buried in commentary, which costs presentation and communication marks as well. The most common real problem is the opposite of length: an exploration using only first-year course content cannot reach the top band of the use of mathematics criterion however carefully it is produced. Check the current guidance in the Mathematics guide your school holds.

Can a tutor give my daughter a topic for her exploration?+

No. The topic and the question have to be her own, and personal engagement is a criterion worth three marks that is awarded precisely for evidence of her own choices. A topic handed over reads as handed over, because no decision appears anywhere in the document. What a tutor can legitimately do is ask what she is actually interested in, what data she could get hold of, and what mathematics she wants to use, then press on each candidate until one survives. That questioning usually produces a better topic than any suggestion, and she can defend it.

Three IA deadlines land in the same two weeks. What should we do first?+

Rank by marks available for hours spent rather than by anxiety. A component where the evaluation section is thin can often gain several marks in an evening; a component needing new data cannot gain anything without a laboratory slot, so that booking goes in first because it depends on other people. Anything that can be finished before the mock examination window should be. A single planning session usually produces that order, and some families buy nothing else. Ask each subject teacher whether their internal deadline has any flexibility before assuming it does not.

Our school limits laboratory time. Does that cap what my child can score?+

No, but it changes what the investigation should be. Limited laboratory access is common across Dubai schools and pushes students towards database, simulation or literature-based investigations. Those can reach the top bands when the evaluation of data quality and source reliability is genuine, and they fail when the report becomes a textbook account with no analysis. What does cap a score is designing an experimental method around laboratory time the school was never going to grant, then writing it up as if it happened. Redesign the question around what is actually available, early, with the teacher's agreement.

Will my child's teacher know we used a tutor for an IA?+

Possibly, and that is not a problem if the boundary has been kept. A teacher marking thirty of the same component knows what each student's own writing sounds like, so sudden polish invites questions. Working in one shared file with full version history means the development is visible across weeks and the tutor's input appears as questions rather than as text. Tell the subject teacher that someone is reading drafts. In our experience that makes their own feedback sharper, and it removes any ambiguity if the component is selected in the moderation sample.

Can a tutor mark an IA the way the examiner will?+

A tutor can score it against the same published criteria and explain which band each criterion sits in and why, which is the useful part. What nobody can do is predict the official mark, because the teacher marks the work and the IB moderates a sample, and moderation can move a whole cohort's marks. Anyone offering a guaranteed mark is selling something that does not exist. What criterion-level scoring does give you is a concrete target: this criterion is in the middle band, these two specific changes are what the band above describes.

How does the Economics portfolio differ from a single IA?+

It is three separate commentaries, each based on a different published article and each with its own tight word ceiling, which makes it a time-management problem as much as an economics one. Marks are lost in predictable places: an article too thin to analyse, a diagram included without being used, and evaluation replaced by a summary of the article's content. Because the commentaries are separate, the work can be spread across the year rather than attempted in one block, and spreading it is strictly better. Confirm the current word ceiling and weighting in the Economics guide your school holds.

Is it worth starting IA work in DP1 or is that too early?+

DP1 is the right time, and the summer between the DP years is the only genuinely uncommitted block in the two years. The work that belongs there is the work that depends on other people or on luck: laboratory bookings, fieldwork permissions, primary research consents, data collection with time left for a repeat run if the method fails. In Dubai this matters more than elsewhere because many families travel for six or seven weeks over the summer, so a student who leaves without a settled method returns in late August having lost the window entirely.

Can sessions move to post-Iftar times during Ramadan?+

Yes, and most Dubai families ask for it. School days shorten during Ramadan and useful working energy shifts to after Iftar, so standing slots move for the month and heavy drafting is planned either side rather than through it. Because lessons are delivered online, moving a slot by three hours for four weeks is an administrative change. A tutor who has to cross the city in the hour before Iftar cannot offer the same flexibility at any price, which is one of the practical reasons online delivery suits the Dubai calendar.

What does IA help cost per hour in Dubai?+

Market figures as of October 2026, published by the providers named: a design clinic or final audit at the mid-market online band of AED 150-300, where Unitors publishes IB from AED 200; a single-component block with a subject specialist at AED 200-450 or more, where TutorChase publishes AED 270 and Bestimate 200-450+; in-home equivalents at AED 180-500 with travel inside the rate; premium tutors marketed on examiner experience at AED 650. Those are market rates rather than our prices; ours is quoted after the free trial. Ask any provider whether VAT is included before you compare two numbers.

Should we pay our child's own subject teacher to help with their IA?+

No. Your child's teacher marks that component officially, so paying them privately to improve it puts them in an impossible position and creates a conflict a school will take seriously. In Abu Dhabi, ADEK's professional-ethics rules bar school staff from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE private tuition permit carries a code of conduct along the same lines. Ask the teacher to explain a criterion descriptor, which is free and part of their job, and buy reading time from someone with no role in the marking.

Do you send a tutor to our home in Dubai for IA sessions?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai or anywhere else in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. Dubai students are taught one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. For Internal Assessment that is the better format rather than a compromise: the report, the spreadsheet and the graphs are examined together on a shared screen, the specialist is chosen for the subject rather than for the drive, and the version history records how the work developed. If you specifically need an adult physically present, this is not the right service.

Send the list of components, not just the worry

The quickest useful step is a list: the six subjects, which internally assessed components are still outstanding, and the school's internal deadline for each. Book the free trial and bring the one you are most worried about, in whatever state it is in. You will come away with a criterion-by-criterion score, the name of the criterion costing the most marks, and a view on whether that component is even the right one to spend money on. Often it is not, and the ranking itself is the thing worth having. If hours are needed, you will see how many before paying anything.
