IB DP Chemistry HL Home Tutor in Dubai

Hiring an IB DP chemistry HL home tutor in Dubai is not a one-term purchase. Higher Level Chemistry runs 240 taught hours over two years, and the money follows the syllabus in uneven bursts: energetics in the first winter, organic mechanisms through DP2, the scientific investigation somewhere in between. This page costs the whole two years in AED by phase rather than quoting one hourly figure, and explains exactly what the Higher Level premium pays for. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

  • Two-year phase budget rather than a single hourly number
  • 240 Higher Level taught hours against 150 at Standard Level
  • Organic mechanisms and electrochemistry taught on a shared whiteboard
  • Trial lesson first, then a quote based on the diagnosed brief

Costing Higher Level Chemistry across two years, not one invoice

Most Dubai parents arrive at this search with the wrong unit of measurement. They ask what a chemistry tutor charges per hour, get a range from AED 150 to AED 650, and have no way to turn that into a decision. The useful question for Higher Level Chemistry is different: how many hours will two years actually need, and when in those two years will they be needed? Higher Level Chemistry is 240 taught hours against 150 at Standard Level, and that extra ninety hours is not spread evenly. It clusters in specific places, and so does the spending.

The shape of it is predictable enough to plan. DP1 runs mostly on foundations: the particulate model, bonding and structure, classification of matter, and the first pass at energetics and kinetics. Families who buy support in DP1 usually buy a little of it, steadily, to stop a gap compounding. DP2 is where the Higher Level extensions land, and where the bill rises: organic reaction mechanisms, spectroscopic identification using combined techniques, electrode potentials, entropy and Gibbs free energy, solubility equilibria, buffers, and transition-metal complexes. Then the scientific investigation takes its own block of hours, and then mock season takes another.

That pattern is why a flat monthly figure misleads. A family paying AED 800 a month every month for two years spends more than a family who buys four sessions in DP1 term two, a short block around the investigation, and a sustained run of weekly sessions through DP2 autumn and winter. The second family also gets better value, because their hours land where the Higher Level content actually is. The table further down this page sets out that phase budget in AED using published market bands, so you can build your own version of it.

The Higher Level premium itself is worth understanding rather than resenting. It exists for two reasons. Organic mechanism work and electrochemistry are genuinely harder to teach than stoichiometry, and fewer tutors do them well, so the pool is smaller and small pools price upward. And a Higher Level brief carries more marking: a Paper 2 extended-response answer on a multi-step mechanism takes real time to annotate properly, and a tutor who does not do that annotation is not giving you the diagnosis you are paying for. In the Dubai market an IB specialist sits at roughly AED 200 to 450 an hour, with Bestimate's published table at the same band and TutorChase quoting around AED 270.

One thing this page will not do is promise a tutor at a Dubai address. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. Chemistry here is taught one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, with mechanisms drawn live on a shared whiteboard and the annotated file saved for the student afterwards. For a subject built on curly arrows and reaction schemes, that saved file is a better revision artefact than a diagram on a kitchen-table notepad, and the specialist is chosen for knowing the current guide rather than for living twenty minutes away.

At a glance

  • Higher Level is 240 taught hours; Standard Level is 150, and the gap sits in DP2
  • The Higher Level extensions cluster in organic mechanisms, electrochemistry and equilibria
  • Spending is bursty: a phase budget costs less than a flat monthly retainer
  • IB specialist market band in Dubai runs roughly AED 200 to 450 an hour
  • Mechanisms are drawn live on a shared whiteboard and the file is kept
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Higher Level Chemistry is a Diploma subject, but the decision to take it is usually made a year earlier and the preparation starts there. The three programmes below are the routes Dubai students arrive from, with what each one leaves them short of.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS. Chemistry at Higher Level is one of the heavier Higher Level choices on content volume, assessed by two written papers and one internally marked scientific investigation. Students taking Chemistry HL alongside Biology HL and Mathematics are carrying three content-dense courses at once, and the practical consequence is a timetable problem as much as an academic one.

In Dubai, Higher Level Chemistry is most often taken by students heading towards medicine, dentistry, pharmacy or engineering, which means the grade carries admissions weight and the family's tolerance for a drifting 5 is low. Dubai schools run an August to June year, so the Higher Level extension content lands across the DP2 autumn and winter terms. That window is also when Extended Essay deadlines bite, which is why Dubai chemistry demand spikes in October and again in January.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

MYP Sciences is marked against four criteria rather than papers, with chemistry taught inside an integrated science course in most schools. Students come out able to design an investigation and evaluate a method, which is genuine preparation for the Diploma investigation, and without the stoichiometric fluency Higher Level assumes from week one. Mole calculations are the usual first gap.

Several Dubai schools run MYP straight into the Diploma with no IGCSE year, which makes the stoichiometry gap sharper here than in markets where every student sits a separate chemistry paper at 16. An ex-MYP student taking Chemistry HL in Dubai benefits most from four or five sessions early in DP1 on moles, concentration and limiting reagents, long before anyone mentions mechanisms.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE and the British route

Cambridge or Pearson IGCSE Chemistry to Year 11, then a split into A Level or the Diploma. A grade 8 or 9 in separate IGCSE Chemistry predicts a workable Higher Level start. A grade 6, or Combined Science rather than separate Chemistry, predicts a difficult DP1 and should change the decision about whether Higher Level is the right choice at all. Saying that early is cheaper than discovering it in February.

British-curriculum schools carry the largest share of Dubai enrolment, so most of the emirate's Higher Level Chemistry cohort comes through IGCSE. The specific carry-over gap is quantitative: IGCSE rewards recall and short calculation, while Higher Level rewards multi-step reasoning with a data booklet in hand. Dubai students who scored highly at IGCSE and then slipped in DP1 have almost always hit that wall rather than a knowledge wall.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Higher Level Chemistry is rarely the only brief in a Dubai household. The subjects below are the ones it is most often paired with, with what each assesses, so you can judge whether one specialist can carry two briefs and lower the combined bill.

Chemistry

Higher Level

Three Structure strands and three Reactivity strands across 240 taught hours, extended at Higher Level into organic mechanisms, spectroscopic identification, electrode potentials, entropy and Gibbs free energy, solubility and buffer equilibria, and transition-metal complexes. Two written papers plus the scientific investigation.

Chemistry

Standard Level

The same six strands at 150 taught hours without the Higher Level extensions. Mechanistic organic chemistry is much lighter and the quantitative equilibrium work stops short of buffers and solubility products. A sensible destination for a student whose DP1 Higher Level grade is not holding.

Biology

Higher Level

Unity and diversity, form and function, interaction and interdependence, continuity and change. The common Higher Level pairing for medicine applicants in Dubai. Shares the investigation format with Chemistry, so data-analysis coaching done once applies to both internal assessments.

Physics

HL and SL

Space, time and motion through to nuclear and quantum physics. Overlaps Chemistry at energetics, thermodynamics and atomic structure. Students taking both find the mathematical handling transfers; the command-term expectations do not, and that is where marks go.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Calculus, functions and algebra. Higher Level Chemistry leans on logarithms for pH and pKa work, on exponential relationships in kinetics, and on confident rearrangement throughout. A chemistry grade stuck at 5 is sometimes an algebra problem that chemistry hours cannot fix.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Modelling and statistics with technology. Workable alongside Chemistry HL, with one caveat worth checking early: some competitive science and engineering courses state a preference for Analysis and Approaches, so verify the requirement on the university's own admissions page before the subject choice is locked.

Environmental Systems and Societies

HL and SL

An interdisciplinary course covering ecosystems, biodiversity, pollution and climate. Chosen by Dubai students who want a second science-adjacent subject without a second laboratory course, which leaves Chemistry HL as a standalone brief rather than part of a science pair.

Sports, Exercise and Health Science

HL and SL

Anatomy, physiology, energy systems and nutrition, with substantial biochemistry. Students taking it with Chemistry HL find the metabolic content mutually reinforcing, and the investigation skills are the same, which means one tutor can reasonably advise on both research questions.

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay

Core

Not a tutored subject in the usual sense, but the core components that collide with Chemistry HL in DP2. A chemistry Extended Essay needs a research question narrow enough to investigate and a supervisor relationship that the tutor supports rather than replaces.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three patterns Dubai families use to buy Higher Level Chemistry across two years, with what each one costs in practice. All are delivered one-to-one over live video; none involves travel to a UAE address.

Low-frequency maintenance through DP1

One session a fortnight, or a short block each term, aimed at stopping a gap compounding rather than at fixing a crisis. Cheapest over two years and the pattern most Dubai families wish they had started with. Works because DP1 chemistry is foundational: a mole misconception caught in October costs four sessions, and the same misconception in DP2 costs twelve.

  • Lowest total two-year spend of the three patterns
  • Targets stoichiometry, bonding and the first pass at energetics
  • Catches a Combined Science or MYP gap before it compounds
  • Easy to raise to weekly when the Higher Level extensions arrive

Weekly through the DP2 extension content

Sustained weekly sessions from the DP2 autumn term through to mocks, which is when organic mechanisms, electrochemistry, entropy and the equilibrium extensions land. The heaviest spending phase and the one that most justifies a specialist rate, because this is the content a generalist tutor teaches badly.

  • Covers the Higher Level extensions as the school teaches them
  • Mechanisms drawn live and the annotated file kept by the student
  • A marked Paper 2 component in most sessions, annotated not just scored
  • Fixed Gulf Standard Time slot, held across the term

Investigation block, separate from the weekly run

Two to four sessions concentrated around the scientific investigation: question design, a mid-point check on whether the data will support analysis, and a draft review against the criteria. Worth twenty per cent of the grade, so the return per hour is usually high. The student writes every word of the report.

  • Research-question design before any data is collected
  • A check on whether the variable range will yield real analysis
  • Criterion-by-criterion feedback in plain language
  • No text supplied, no method handed over, no report written

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

A two-year Chemistry HL budget for a Dubai family, by phase

The table below is a planning instrument rather than a price list. It takes the published Dubai market bands for an IB specialist and maps them onto the eight phases of a Higher Level Chemistry course as Dubai schools actually sequence it, so you can see where the hours land and build your own forecast. The AED figures use the market band of roughly AED 200 to 450 an hour for an IB specialist, which is what Bestimate's rate table publishes and close to TutorChase's quoted AED 270.

Two features of the shape are worth noticing. The first is that the cheapest phases come first. DP1 term one and two need very few paid hours for most students, and the ones they do need are low-value in content terms and high-value in consequence: catching a stoichiometry gap in October is the single highest-return purchase in the whole two years. The second is that the expensive phases are short. DP2 autumn and winter carry the Higher Level extensions and the bulk of the spend, but that is roughly twenty weeks, not two years.

A family who follows this shape typically spends less in total than a family on a flat monthly retainer, and gets more useful hours. The retainer model charges you in July when nothing is happening and in February when everything is, at the same rate. The phase model concentrates money where the content is. What it requires from you is a willingness to buy nothing for stretches of DP1, which is harder than it sounds once a parent has decided that chemistry is a problem.

Where the Higher Level premium actually comes from

A Dubai parent quoted AED 380 an hour for Higher Level Chemistry and AED 220 for Standard Level is being asked to pay a seventy per cent premium, and deserves to know what it is for. It is not a surcharge for the word Higher. It is three specific things, each of which you can test in a trial lesson.

The first is content the tutor pool thins out on. Plenty of good tutors can teach bonding, stoichiometry and the first pass at energetics. Substantially fewer can teach a nucleophilic substitution mechanism properly, explain why a tertiary halide goes one route and a primary halide another, or walk a student through combining mass spectrometry, infrared and proton nuclear magnetic resonance data to identify an unknown. Fewer still handle electrode potentials and the entropy and Gibbs free energy material with confidence. Those are the Higher Level extensions, and they are where the premium lives.

The second is marking load. A Higher Level Paper 2 extended response on a multi-step mechanism cannot be marked usefully with a tick and a score. It needs annotation at the point where the student's arrow went to the wrong atom, which takes time between sessions that the hourly figure has to cover. The third is scarcity of the slot rather than the skill: Dubai Higher Level students want weekday evenings on Gulf Standard Time in the DP2 autumn term, and so does every other Higher Level student in the emirate. Ask a prospective tutor to teach you one mechanism in the trial lesson. The premium is either visible in that twenty minutes or it is not there.

What the two written papers reward, and where DP2 students leak marks

  • Paper 2 is the largest single block of marks and the best hour-for-hour target
  • Curly arrows starting at the wrong place is the most common mechanism error
  • Formal charges and sign conventions cost more marks than missing content does
  • The data booklet is supplied, so recall drilling is poor value
  • Paper 1B data analysis rewards a narrow, teachable set of skills

Under the science guides first assessed in 2025, Chemistry at Higher Level is assessed by two written papers and one internally marked scientific investigation, with no separate options paper. Paper 1 has a multiple-choice section and a data-based section. Paper 2 is short-answer and extended-response. Paper 1 carries 36% of the grade, Paper 2 carries 44%, and the investigation 20%. Check the detail against the guide your child's school is teaching, because schools moved to the current guides on different schedules.

The distribution tells you where an hour is worth most, and for Higher Level Chemistry the answer is nearly always Paper 2. It is the largest block of marks and the component where the examiner is reading reasoning rather than checking an answer. Students who know the chemistry and still score in the middle band are usually losing marks to presentation: a mechanism drawn without a formal charge, a curly arrow starting at an atom rather than at a bond or lone pair, an equilibrium answer that names the direction of shift without naming the reason, or an enthalpy calculation with the sign dropped.

The data booklet changes what is worth tutoring. Because constants, formulae and spectroscopic data are supplied in the examination, time spent memorising them is wasted time. What is not supplied is fluency in using them under pressure: finding the right table quickly, knowing which value the question needs, and not confusing two similarly named quantities. That is a drillable skill and it is cheap to buy. A tutor who spends sessions on recall that the booklet already provides is charging you for the wrong thing.

Comparing in-home chemistry tuition in Dubai with the online alternative

In-home tuition is widely sold in Dubai and the figures are public: Bestimate's table puts in-home one-to-one at AED 180 to 350 an hour, independent home tutors quote up to AED 500, and monthly in-home blocks of four two-hour sessions appear at AED 1,599 to 1,799. Those numbers include a driver's time across a city where a cross-town run in the after-school window is rarely under forty minutes each way. The comparison below is between delivery models, not between brands, and it is specific to what Higher Level Chemistry needs.

Chemistry is an unusually good test case for this comparison because so much of the teaching is drawing. A mechanism explained verbally is forgotten; a mechanism drawn, annotated and saved can be revisited the night before the paper. On a shared whiteboard the drawing is already a file. On a kitchen table it is a page in a notebook that may or may not survive to May. For a sixteen or seventeen year old with a laptop, that is not a compromise relative to presence; for the specific demands of Higher Level organic chemistry it is a better record.

What in-home genuinely buys is the discipline of someone in the room, which matters for a younger child and matters much less for a Diploma student. What it costs beyond money is choice. A Dubai family hiring in-home selects from tutors who can reach their district inside the school-run window, and the set of people who can both do that and teach electrode potentials well is small. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai or anywhere in the UAE; our tutors do not travel to UAE addresses. If presence in the room is the requirement, a local in-home tutor is the correct purchase and we are not it.

The scientific investigation, and the line a paid tutor must not cross

  • Legitimate: killing a weak research question before any data is collected
  • Legitimate: a mid-point check that the data range will support analysis
  • Legitimate: naming where an evaluation is thin and a conclusion overreaches
  • Never: supplying text, rewriting paragraphs, or providing a method to copy
  • The school marks the investigation; a paid tutor has no role in that mark

Twenty per cent of the Higher Level Chemistry grade comes from one piece of individual research, marked internally by the school. It is the component where paid support delivers the most value per hour and where it most often goes wrong. The principle is not complicated: the report must be the student's own work in the student's own words, and the tutor's role is teaching and feedback. Crossing that line is malpractice under IB academic-honesty rules, and the penalty lands on the student's Diploma.

The legitimate work is substantial and specific. Most investigations fail at the research question rather than at the chemistry: a question that measures something already established produces a report with nothing to analyse, however neat the data. A tutor earns their fee by killing a weak question in week one and pressure-testing the replacement until it will generate a real relationship across a usable range. After that, the useful sessions are a mid-point check on whether the data collected can actually support analysis, and a reading of the draft that names where the evaluation is thin and where a conclusion has run ahead of its uncertainties.

What never happens in a session is text. A tutor does not supply sentences, does not rewrite paragraphs into better English, and does not hand over a method to be copied. Ask any prospective tutor what they do with a draft and listen carefully to the answer. There are providers in this market selling finished investigation reports at around AED 3,750. That is an academic-integrity breach, it is an IB malpractice trigger, and no amount of exam pressure makes it a sensible purchase.

06

KHDA, the permit, and what a Dubai inspection band does not tell you

  • KHDA oversees private education quality in Dubai on a six-band scale
  • A whole-school inspection band says little about one Higher Level set
  • No private school fee increase in Dubai for the 2026-27 year
  • The MoHRE private tuition permit is free and valid for two years
  • A centre with premises needs a separate KHDA training-institute permit

Dubai's private schools are regulated by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, which is responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate. KHDA inspects on a six-band scale from Outstanding to Very Weak. That rating is a judgement about a whole school, and it is worth knowing before you draw conclusions from it: an Outstanding school can have a thin Higher Level Chemistry set with a teacher new to the current guide, and a Good school can have a chemistry department that has taught the Diploma for fifteen years. The band does not tell you whether your child's chemistry teaching is strong.

KHDA also confirmed on 22 May 2026 that there will be no increase in private school fees in Dubai for 2026-27, under the emirate's second economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion within a AED 2.5 billion total. Separately, Dubai is adding seven private schools for 2026-27, four UK curriculum and three International Baccalaureate, creating 16,846 places. More Diploma places means more competition for the same specialist evening slots, which is a supply fact with a pricing consequence.

On the tutoring side, the rules are federal. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is issued through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, and is granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Individuals tutoring without it are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, with no published fine schedule, so treat any circulating amount as unverified. A tutoring business with premises in Dubai needs a separate KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute, and no online platform should imply it holds one unless it does.

07

What a Dubai family should do if a year of spending has not moved the grade

This happens, and it is worth planning for before it does. A family buys weekly Higher Level Chemistry sessions through DP1, spends somewhere between AED 8,000 and AED 20,000 at market rates, and the school report still says 4. The instinct is to buy more hours. That is usually the wrong move, and it is the one most providers will encourage.

Four diagnoses cover most cases. The grade is not moving because the sessions are re-teaching content the student already understands, which feels productive and changes nothing; because the real gap is mathematical rather than chemical, so every chemistry hour is spent working around an algebra problem; because the student is not working between sessions, in which case weekly tuition is an expensive substitute for independent practice; or because Higher Level is genuinely the wrong level and the honest conversation is about moving to Standard Level. Only the first two are fixable by changing the tutoring.

The test is the marked work, not the feeling. Ask for the last four marked papers with annotations and look at where the marks were lost each time. If the same error recurs across all four, the sessions are not addressing it and the brief needs rewriting or the tutor needs changing. If the errors are different each time and the total is creeping up, it is working slowly and more hours may genuinely help. If there are no marked papers to look at, you have found the problem. We review at six weeks for exactly this reason, and we will say when stopping is the right answer.

08

If no Higher Level Chemistry specialist is free when you need one

Higher Level Chemistry in the DP2 autumn term, weekday evening, Gulf Standard Time: that is the single most contested booking in this market. Every Dubai Diploma family wants it, the specialists who teach mechanisms and electrochemistry well are a small group, and the slots are largely gone by February in an examination year. Most platforms handle this by taking the booking anyway and matching whoever is available. We would rather tell you the truth up front.

If a Higher Level Chemistry specialist is not free in your preferred slot, you get three honest options and no fourth. A different time in the same week. A weekend morning, which for mechanism work is often better anyway because the student is rested. Or a named date when a slot opens, with no payment taken until it does. If no specialist in a schedule that overlaps Gulf Standard Time covers the brief at all, we say so and state what we can offer instead, including the time difference, before you decide anything.

And if the honest answer is that we cannot staff the brief well, we say that. A Higher Level Chemistry student matched to a tutor who is confident on stoichiometry and vague on electrode potentials will have a pleasant term and no grade movement, and will conclude that tutoring does not work. That costs the family more than the fee. The practical defence is timing: settle this in the DP1 summer or the DP2 autumn, when choice is wide and rates sit at the bottom of the band, rather than in the final ten weeks when neither is true.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Dubai

Where a Dubai family lives changes the timetable more than the teaching. The districts below are the ones that come up most for Higher Level Chemistry, with the specific scheduling fact that matters in each.

Downtown Dubai

Apartment living with short school runs to the central campuses and heavy evening road traffic at every exit. Families here favour a fixed early-evening slot and keep it, because a moved chemistry session in DP2 tends to become a cancelled one.

Business Bay

A working-parent district where both parents are often on calls until seven. Chemistry sessions here run later than the Dubai average, and the session note afterwards matters more because nobody in the household watched the lesson.

Al Quoz

A mixed industrial and residential area with several school campuses on its edges and an unusually wide spread of curricula in a small radius. A Higher Level chemistry student here is often the only one in their cohort taking it at that level.

Umm Suqeim

Villa communities close to the Jumeirah school corridor, with a short run home and a genuine four-thirty start. The practical advantage is that a ninety-minute session fits before dinner rather than after it, which suits mechanism work needing concentration.

Nad Al Sheba

Spread-out villa plots served by a few large campuses, with a school bus that can run long. Chemistry families here frequently ask for a weekend morning slot instead of a weekday evening, and mechanism-heavy sessions do work better rested.

Dubai Hills Estate

A newer community with campuses inside it and a short walk or drive to school for many. Among the easiest districts in Dubai to run twice-weekly chemistry in, which is why Higher Level students here often buy two short sessions rather than one long one.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Central Dubai and the Al Khail corridor

The campuses serving Downtown, Business Bay, Nad Al Sheba and Dubai Hills families. Several run both a British route and the Diploma, so a Higher Level Chemistry set can be small, and a small set means fewer classmates to compare working with.

  • Repton School Dubai
  • Kent College Dubai
  • Hartland International School
  • North London Collegiate School Dubai
  • GEMS Wellington Academy Al Khail
  • Dubai International Academy Emirates Hills

Southern Dubai and the new communities

Campuses serving Al Quoz, Al Barsha South, Al Furjan and the Sustainable City. A newer cluster where IB provision has expanded quickly, which is part of why specialist Higher Level science demand in Dubai has risen faster than supply.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Say where in the two years you are

DP1 or DP2, which strands the school has taught, whether the investigation has started, and what the last report said. A brief that names the phase gets matched faster and quoted more accurately than one that says the student finds chemistry hard, because the phase determines which specialist skills the brief actually needs.

  2. 02

Use the free trial to test one mechanism

A full one-to-one session over live video at no cost. For Higher Level Chemistry, ask the tutor to teach one organic mechanism in it. Twenty minutes of that tells you more about whether the specialist premium is real than any profile does, and you keep the written diagnosis either way.

  3. 03

Build the phase plan, then the quote

After the trial, we map the hours onto the phases ahead rather than quoting a flat monthly figure: how many sessions before the investigation, how many through the extension content, how many for paper discipline. You see the shape of the two-year spend before agreeing to the first month of it.

  4. 04

    Run weekly with annotated marking

A fixed Gulf Standard Time slot, a marked Paper 2 component in most sessions, and annotation at the point the reasoning went wrong rather than a score at the top. Mechanisms are drawn on a shared whiteboard and the file is saved for the student's revision.

  5. 05

Review at six weeks against the marked work

We look at the last marked papers together and ask whether the same error is recurring. If it is, the brief or the tutor changes. If the grade is moving, the frequency may drop. If the right answer is to stop, or to move to Standard Level, we will say so rather than selling another term.

A two-year plan rather than a monthly retainer

Higher Level Chemistry spending is bursty because the content is. We map hours onto the phases where the Higher Level extensions actually land, which usually costs a Dubai family less in total than paying the same figure every month for twenty-four months.

The premium is testable in the trial

Ask the tutor to teach one organic mechanism in the free trial lesson. Either the specialist knowledge is visible in that twenty minutes or the higher rate is not buying anything. We would rather you ran that test than take our word for the band.

Marking that is annotated, not scored

A Higher Level Paper 2 answer marked with a number tells you nothing you did not know. Marked with annotation at the point the arrow went to the wrong atom, it tells you what the next session is for. That marking time is inside the rate.

Drawing that survives to May

Mechanisms are drawn live on a shared whiteboard and the annotated file is saved for the student. For a subject taught through diagrams, a revisable file is a better record than a page in a notebook, which is a real advantage of the format rather than a consolation.

A clear line on the investigation

We pressure-test the research question, check the data will support analysis, and give criterion-by-criterion feedback on the student's draft. We supply no text and no method. Providers selling finished reports at around AED 3,750 are selling a malpractice risk the student carries.

Published figures carry their source

Every AED band on this page names the provider or table that published it, and none of them is presented as an IB Gram price. Three of six ranking pages in this market publish no price at all, and the two that do quote in US dollars.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

How do we budget for two years of Chemistry Higher Level rather than one term?+

Map hours onto phases instead of paying a flat monthly figure. Most Dubai families need very few paid hours in DP1 terms one and two, a short block around the scientific investigation, a sustained weekly run through the DP2 autumn and winter when the Higher Level extensions land, and a final stretch of paper discipline. At the published IB specialist band of roughly AED 200 to 450 an hour, that shape typically costs less in total than twenty-four flat months and puts the hours where the hard content actually is. The table on this page sets out indicative AED ranges for each phase so you can build your own forecast.

Why does Chemistry Higher Level cost more per hour than Standard Level in Dubai?+

Three reasons, all testable. The content thins the tutor pool: plenty of tutors teach bonding and stoichiometry well, far fewer teach organic mechanisms, combined spectroscopic identification, electrode potentials and Gibbs free energy with confidence, and small pools price upward. The marking is heavier, because a Higher Level Paper 2 extended response needs annotation rather than a score. And the weekday evening slot on Gulf Standard Time in the DP2 autumn term is the most contested booking in this market. Ask a prospective tutor to teach one mechanism in the trial lesson; the premium shows up there or it does not exist.

Which parts of the Higher Level chemistry syllabus absorb the most paid hours?+

Organic reaction mechanisms first, by a clear margin, because they require a way of thinking rather than a set of facts and most students start by drawing curly arrows from the wrong place. Then the entropy and Gibbs free energy material, which is conceptually the hardest block for most candidates. Then structural determination by combining mass spectrometry, infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance data, which is a distinct skill worth three or four sessions of its own. Buffers and solubility products come next, and they are often a logarithm problem rather than a chemistry one. Electrochemistry is usually taught late and revised badly.

Is it cheaper to start Chemistry HL support in DP1 or wait until DP2?+

Starting earlier almost always costs less in total, which is the opposite of how most Dubai families behave. A stoichiometry misconception caught in DP1 October takes three or four sessions to fix. The same misconception still present in DP2, now sitting underneath equilibrium calculations and buffer work, takes three times as long because it has to be excavated from everything built on top of it. The cheapest purchase in the whole two years is a short diagnostic block at the start of DP1. Waiting also costs you choice, since specialist evening slots are substantially committed by February of the examination year.

What does organic mechanism coaching cost compared with general chemistry revision?+

Per hour, the same from most providers; in value, not remotely the same. General revision re-covers content the student has already met and tends to feel productive while changing little. Mechanism coaching teaches a transferable method: where a curly arrow starts, why a tertiary halide follows one route and a primary halide another, how to show formal charge and stereochemistry. Because it is a method rather than a fact set, it compounds across every organic question in Paper 2, which is the largest block of marks on the paper at 44% of the grade. If you are buying a fixed number of hours, this is where to put them.

Our son wants to study medicine. Does that change what we should spend on Chemistry HL?+

It changes the tolerance for drift rather than the teaching. Competitive medicine, dentistry and pharmacy courses commonly specify Higher Level Chemistry, so the grade carries admissions weight and a 5 that might be acceptable elsewhere is not acceptable here. The practical consequence is that the review cadence tightens: six weeks rather than a term, with marked papers each time, so a plateau is caught early. Verify every subject and grade requirement on the university's own admissions page rather than on any tutoring site, including ours, and note that tutoring is not a requirement for any admissions process.

Can we cut the bill by moving from Higher Level to Standard Level chemistry?+

Substantially, yes, and sometimes it is the right call for reasons other than money. Standard Level is 150 taught hours against 240, without the mechanism-heavy organic content, the spectroscopic determination work, buffers and solubility products, or the entropy and Gibbs free energy material. That is a smaller brief, a larger tutor pool and a lower rate. The real question is not cost but consequence: check whether any course your child is applying to specifies Higher Level Chemistry before changing anything, and have the conversation with the Diploma coordinator rather than with a tutor.

Does the chemistry data booklet mean fewer hours are needed on memorising?+

Yes, and a tutor still drilling recall of supplied data is charging you for the wrong work. Constants, formulae and spectroscopic reference data are provided in the examination. What the booklet does not supply is fluency: finding the right table quickly under time pressure, knowing which of two similarly named quantities the question wants, and not losing a minute hunting. That is drillable in a session or two. Hours are better spent on Paper 2 reasoning and on mechanism technique, where the marks are decided by what the student can construct rather than by what they can remember.

What is a fair AED rate for a Higher Level chemistry specialist in Dubai?+

The published market band for an IB specialist runs roughly AED 200 to 450 an hour. Bestimate's Dubai rate table puts specialist exam-year tutors at AED 200 to 450 and above, TutorChase quotes around AED 270, and Unitors publishes IB tuition from AED 200. Below about AED 150 you are generally buying a generalist, which is poor value for mechanism and electrochemistry work. Above roughly AED 500, as with BartyED at AED 650, you are buying scarcity and reputation. Those figures are published by those providers; IB Gram quotes after the free trial, once the brief is diagnosed.

How many sessions does the collaborative sciences project need?+

Usually none, and a provider selling you hours for it is worth questioning. The collaborative element of the current science guides is group work run by the school, it is not separately assessed in the way the individual investigation is, and its value is in the collaboration itself. Where a session does help is adjacent: if the project has eaten three weeks the school had allocated to taught content, a student can fall behind on syllabus material and need that gap closed. Spend the money on the gap, not on the project.

Is a tutor marketed as an examiner worth the premium for Chemistry HL?+

Only if the claim is evidenced, and often not then. Current examiner status cannot be verified from a profile page, and no examiner has access to unreleased papers, marking decisions or grade boundaries, so any implication of inside knowledge should end the conversation. What genuine examining experience can bring is a sharper sense of how mark schemes award credit, which is useful. Test it rather than paying for the label: in the trial lesson, ask the tutor to mark a Paper 2 answer and explain each mark awarded. A tutor who can do that is valuable whether or not they have ever examined.

We have paid for a year and the Chemistry HL grade has not moved. What now?+

Do not buy more hours of the same thing. Ask for the last four marked papers with annotations and look for a recurring error. If the same mistake appears in all four, the sessions are not addressing it and the brief or the tutor must change. If the errors differ each time and the total is creeping upward, it is working slowly. If no marked work exists, that is the finding. Also consider the two diagnoses tutoring cannot fix: a mathematical gap that chemistry hours work around rather than close, and a student who does nothing between sessions.

Does buying two years of sessions in advance get a discount worth taking?+

Be careful. A long prepayment transfers all the risk to you: if the tutor turns out to be wrong for your child in month three, or your child moves to Standard Level, or the family relocates, you are negotiating a refund rather than simply stopping. The discount is rarely large enough to justify that. A term block is a reasonable commitment because a term is a unit you can actually forecast. Before agreeing any block, ask what notice a pause needs, whether unused sessions expire, and whether the slot is held while paused.

Can one arrangement cover Chemistry HL for two siblings in different year groups?+

It can, and it often lowers the combined cost, but not by teaching them together. A DP1 student working on bonding and stoichiometry and a DP2 student working on electrode potentials cannot share a session usefully. What a single specialist can do is hold two consecutive slots, carry the context of the household, and apply one diagnostic approach to both. Ask whether a combined arrangement attracts a lower rate per hour. What should not happen is a shared session sold as efficiency, because the younger student will be lost and the older one will be bored.

Does a Dubai school's KHDA inspection band tell us whether to buy chemistry support?+

Very little. KHDA inspects on a six-band scale from Outstanding to Very Weak and the judgement covers a whole school: leadership, teaching across all phases, inclusion, Arabic provision and more. A school rated Outstanding can run a small Higher Level Chemistry set with a teacher new to the current guide. A school rated Good can have a chemistry department that has taught the Diploma for fifteen years. What tells you whether support is needed is your child's marked chemistry work and what the subject teacher says about it, not the emirate-level rating.

How do we avoid paying twice for the same chemistry topic?+

Insist on a written session note and read it. The commonest waste in paid tutoring is a tutor re-teaching a topic because nobody recorded that it was already covered, which feels like diligence and is actually a repeat purchase. A note that says what was covered, what the student got wrong, and what they should do before the next session makes repetition visible immediately. The second defence is a marked paper every few sessions: if the same error recurs after a topic has supposedly been taught twice, the teaching method needs changing rather than the hours increasing.

Plan the two years, then buy the first six weeks

Higher Level Chemistry is a two-year commitment with a lumpy spending profile, and the families who handle it best are the ones who see the whole shape before they buy the first session. Start with the free trial lesson: a full one-to-one session over live video at no cost, with one organic mechanism taught inside it so you can judge whether the specialist premium is real. You keep the written diagnosis whatever you decide. From there we map the hours onto the phases ahead and you commit to six weeks, not to two years. If the honest answer is that your child needs a maths tutor or a conversation with their coordinator rather than chemistry hours, we will say that.
