IB DP Economics HL Home Tutor in Dubai

Parents searching for an IB DP Economics HL home tutor in Dubai almost always want the same thing: proof the grade is moving. IB Gram teaches Economics HL one-to-one over live video, on Gulf Standard Time, and the proof arrives in writing — a marked Paper 1 essay with the mark allocation shown line by line, a commentary draft scored against criteria A to E, and a running record of which of the four syllabus units are secure. The trial lesson is free and carries no card details.

Why Dubai Economics HL families ask for evidence before they ask for a tutor

A Dubai parent looking for an IB DP Economics HL home tutor is usually reacting to a specific document: a DP1 report with a 4 in Economics, a mock paper that came back with an unexplained 11 out of 25, or a first commentary that the teacher described as "descriptive". The question behind the search is not really about tutoring. It is about whether anyone can show, in writing, why the marks are where they are and what would change them.

That is a reasonable thing to ask, and Economics HL happens to be a subject where it is answerable. The course is assessed through four separate instruments with published weightings, and each one fails in a different, diagnosable way. A student can know every definition in Unit 2 and still lose six marks in Paper 1 part (b) because no evaluation appears in the final paragraph. A student can draw a flawless externality diagram and lose a criterion A mark because the axes are unlabelled. These are not vague problems, and they do not need a motivational conversation. They need a marked script and a second attempt.

So this page is built around evidence rather than around a sales argument. Below you will find the HL assessment structure with the weighting on each component, the five places where HL students most often lose marks, the IA criteria set out by letter with the marks attached to each, the market rate for Economics tutoring in Dubai in AED with its source named, and a sixteen-week schedule counted backwards from the May session showing what a parent should be able to see at each stage. If a tutoring arrangement is working, each of those stages produces a document you can read.

The practical point about delivery: tutoring for families in Dubai is delivered online, one-to-one, over live video. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai or anywhere else in the UAE — sending a tutor to a residence is a service we run only in India. For Economics HL that constraint turns out to be an advantage rather than a compromise. Economics HL is a comparatively thin market. The number of people in Dubai who can teach the Paper 3 policy recommendation properly and mark a commentary against the 2022 criteria is small, and most of them are already employed full time at a school in Emirates Hills or Deira. Online delivery means the match is made on subject depth rather than on who can reach Jumeirah by 16:30 on a Tuesday.

It also means the record is kept automatically. A lesson over live video can be recorded with the family's consent, the annotated script is a file rather than a sheet of paper left on a kitchen table, and the mark history sits in one place from DP1 term one to the final session before study leave. Parents who have tried an in-home arrangement in Dubai often say the same thing about it: the lessons may well have been good, but there was nothing to look at afterwards.

At a glance

  • HL weightings: Paper 1 20%, Paper 2 30%, Paper 3 30%, internal assessment 20%
  • The IA portfolio is three commentaries of up to 800 words each, worth 15 marks apiece
  • Paper 3 is HL-only and carries quantitative work plus a policy recommendation
  • Market rate for IB specialist tutoring in Dubai runs roughly AED 200-450 per hour (Bestimate, 2026)
  • Every lesson produces a marked artefact: a script, a scored draft, or a diagram set
  • Lessons are delivered online over live video; there is no UAE home-visit service
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Economics HL sits at the end of a route that usually starts in MYP Individuals and Societies. Where a student joined that route changes what the first weeks of support have to cover, so the four programme entries below describe the handover rather than the brochure.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13 · DP1 and DP2

Diploma Programme

Economics is a group 3 subject taken at Higher or Standard Level across two years. At HL the course covers the same four units as SL — introduction, microeconomics, macroeconomics and the global economy — plus HL extension content including market power, asymmetric information, the Keynesian multiplier and the Marshall-Lerner condition. Assessment is three written papers plus a portfolio of three internally assessed commentaries.

In Dubai the Diploma is the minority route by enrolment: KHDA's 2024-25 figures put International Baccalaureate students at 7% of the private-school population against 37% UK curriculum. That ratio matters for Economics HL because a DP2 cohort at a Dubai school is often small enough that the subject is taught by one teacher with no second specialist to ask.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11 · MYP 1-5

Middle Years Programme

Individuals and Societies in MYP 4 and 5 is where most future Economics HL students meet supply, demand and market structures for the first time. MYP assessment runs on four criteria marked 1-8 against task-specific descriptors, which is a different instrument from a DP mark scheme. Students arriving in DP1 from MYP are usually fluent in investigation and weak in the short, precise definitional answers Paper 2 rewards.

Several Dubai IB schools run MYP through to Year 11 without IGCSE, so a DP1 Economics class in Al Barsha or Nad Al Sheba can contain students with no external examination experience at all. The first marked Paper 2 of DP1 is often their first timed external-style paper, and the gap shows in timing rather than in understanding.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

The Career-related Programme combines DP courses with a career-related study and four compulsory components. A CP student may take Economics SL or HL as one of their DP courses, in which case the subject is assessed exactly as it is for a full Diploma candidate. The difference is workload shape: CP students carry a reflective project alongside the commentaries, and the two deadlines often land in the same fortnight.

CP is offered by a small number of Dubai schools and the Economics cohort within it can be two or three students. Where a school runs CP Economics alongside DP Economics in one timetabled class, the commentary deadlines are set once for everybody, which is worth knowing before DP1 term two.

PRE-DPAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE and Year 11 into DP1

Most Dubai students reaching Economics HL arrive from IGCSE rather than MYP, often from Cambridge Economics 0455 or Business Studies 0450. The transition has a specific shape: IGCSE rewards accurate recall and clear explanation, while Paper 1 part (b) at HL awards marks for weighing one effect against another. Students who scored a 9 at IGCSE by writing complete explanations frequently stall at 9-11 out of 15 on the HL evaluation band.

Dubai's British-curriculum schools dominate by enrolment, so the IGCSE-to-DP1 handover is the common case here rather than the exception. A student who finished 0455 in June and starts Economics HL in late August has roughly nine weeks of overlap content before the course moves past anything IGCSE covered.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Economics HL is the subject in the URL, and the list below starts there. The other entries are the subjects Dubai DP students most often pair with it, with the specific assessment pressure each one adds to the same two years.

Economics

HL (the subject of this page) and SL

Four units plus HL extensions. Assessed by Paper 1 extended response, Paper 2 data response, Paper 3 policy paper and a portfolio of three commentaries. HL-only content includes market power, asymmetric information, the inability of markets to achieve equity, the Keynesian multiplier, terms of trade and the Marshall-Lerner condition with the J-curve effect.

Business Management

HL and SL

Shares Economics HL's diagram discipline but assesses differently: a business research project at HL, a pre-released case study for Paper 1, and tools such as Ansoff, BCG and break-even that have to be applied rather than described. Students taking both subjects often transplant Economics evaluation language into Business answers, where the command terms want something more operational.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

The common pairing for Economics HL students heading towards a quantitative degree. The overlap is real but narrow: differentiation supports marginal analysis, and the statistics content helps with Paper 3 calculation questions. AA HL's proof and complex-number work has no Economics application, which surprises students who expected the two subjects to carry each other.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

AI is the more frequent partner for Economics HL at Dubai schools, and the better fit for Paper 3. Regression, correlation and the use of a graphic display calculator map directly onto data-response work. Some UAE and UK university economics programmes specify AA rather than AI, so the route choice should be checked against the named course before DP1 subject selection closes.

Geography

HL and SL

The closest group 3 neighbour to Economics in content, through the global interactions and resource topics. Geography's internal assessment is a fieldwork report, which means a student taking both subjects faces a field report and three commentaries in the same academic year. Mapping both deadline sets onto one calendar in DP1 term two prevents the usual February collision.

Global Politics

HL and SL

Shares the global economy unit's territory from the other direction, and the HL extension work involves an oral presentation on a political issue. Economics students often find the engagement activity easier than their commentaries because the source material is self-selected; the transferable skill is the discipline of linking a claim to a named piece of evidence.

History

HL and SL

The most common group 3 second choice at Dubai IB schools after Business Management. Its Paper 2 and Paper 3 essays reward sustained argument, which supports Economics Paper 1 part (b) directly. The risk runs the other way: History students write long, and Economics Paper 1 gives roughly 45 minutes for the second part of one question.

Psychology

HL and SL

Behavioural content in the Economics course gives these two subjects an unexpected overlap, particularly around rationality assumptions. Psychology's experimental internal assessment teaches a method of evidence handling that transfers well to commentary writing, where the weakest drafts assert an effect without showing the mechanism.

Environmental Systems and Societies

HL and SL

ESS covers common pool resources and sustainability from an ecological standpoint, which is the same ground as the Economics market-failure unit. Students taking both can reuse one body of reading across two subjects, provided the written work is independent — reusing a passage across two subjects is a malpractice question, not an efficiency.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Not an obvious Economics partner, but the HL essay and the paper 1 analysis both train the skill Economics commentaries most often lack: reading a text closely enough to quote the precise clause that supports the point. Commentary criterion C marks are lost more often to loose paraphrase of the article than to weak theory.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways Dubai families use Economics HL support, each producing a different kind of record. Every format is delivered one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time; none involves a visit to a UAE address.

Weekly one-to-one across DP1 and DP2

A fixed 60 or 90-minute slot that tracks the school's scheme of work one or two weeks ahead, so the student meets each unit before the class does. Each session closes with a short timed question, marked before the next lesson. Over two years this produces a continuous mark history rather than a set of impressions, which is what makes a conversation with the school's DP coordinator useful.

  • Same tutor, same slot, from DP1 term one to study leave
  • A timed Paper 1 or Paper 2 question marked after every lesson
  • Written unit-by-unit record of what is secure and what is not
  • Diagram sets built once and revisited, not redrawn each term

Paper 3 policy clinic

A short block aimed only at the HL-only paper, which carries 30% of the grade and is the component Dubai students most often meet unprepared. The clinic works through quantitative question types — elasticity, tax incidence, multiplier, terms of trade — and then the policy recommendation part, where marks are awarded for choosing a measure, justifying it against the data and naming its limitations.

  • Six to eight sessions, usually in DP2 term one
  • Calculation types drilled individually before full papers
  • The recommendation part practised against a written mark allocation
  • Each attempt returned annotated, with the lost marks itemised

IA commentary review cycle

Structured feedback on the student's own commentary drafts, one criterion at a time. The tutor reads the draft, scores it against criteria A to E, and returns the score with written reasons and questions the student must answer themselves. The tutor does not write, rewrite or edit the commentary to completion — that would be malpractice under IB rules and puts the student's whole Diploma at risk.

  • Article selection checked for date, source and unit fit before writing starts
  • Each draft scored A to E with the lost marks named
  • Feedback given as questions, so the revision stays the student's work
  • Word-count and rubric compliance checked against the current subject guide

What a parent searching for an Economics HL home tutor in Dubai is really asking for

  • The phrase describes a delivery format; the underlying request is diagnostic
  • Four assessed HL components, each with a published weighting
  • Every component fails in a different and nameable way
  • IB Gram teaches this course online, one-to-one, and does not visit UAE homes

The literal answer first. An IB DP Economics HL home tutor in Dubai, as the market uses the phrase, means a specialist who works with one student on the Higher Level Diploma Economics course at a time and place the family chooses. In practice in this city that has come to mean two different products: a tutor who travels to a residence in Mirdif or Arabian Ranches, charging a rate that includes the travel; or a tutor who teaches the same course one-to-one over live video at the same hour of the evening. IB Gram sells the second. Home visits are an India-only service and no page on this site offers them in the UAE.

Underneath the search term, though, the request is usually narrower than "a tutor". A parent who types this phrase has generally already seen something concrete: a predicted grade of 4 against a university offer that wants 6, a commentary returned with the comment that it lacks evaluation, or a Paper 3 mock where the student lost most of the calculation marks. What they want is somebody who can look at that specific document and say what is wrong with it.

Economics HL rewards that approach because the course is unusually transparent about where its marks sit. Four assessed components, each with a published weighting. Paper 1 part (a) wants explanation with a diagram; part (b) wants a judgement supported by the explanation. Paper 2 wants short definitional accuracy early and a 15-mark evaluation at the end that uses the provided text. Paper 3 wants arithmetic that is right, and then a policy choice that is defended. The IA wants five criteria met across three separate commentaries. None of that is mysterious, and none of it improves by being talked about in general terms.

So the structure of this page follows the evidence rather than the pitch. The next section sets out the HL components with weightings; after that comes the mark-loss analysis, the IA criteria by letter, the market rate in AED with its source, and a schedule counted backwards from the May session. Read them as a checklist you can hold any Economics tutor to, including ours.

02

The HL assessment structure, component by component

Economics at Higher Level is assessed through three external papers and one internal portfolio. Paper 1 is an extended-response paper of 1 hour 15 minutes in which the student answers one question from a choice, in two parts: an explanation worth 10 marks and a judgement worth 15. Paper 2 is a data-response paper of 1 hour 45 minutes, again one question from a choice, worth 40 marks in total and structured as a series of short parts building to a final 15-mark evaluation that must draw on the provided text and data.

Paper 3 exists only at Higher Level and is where the HL grade is most often decided. It is a 1 hour 45 minute policy paper with two compulsory questions, each carrying quantitative work and a part that asks the student to recommend and justify a policy response using the material supplied. The arithmetic is not hard in isolation — elasticity coefficients, tax incidence, multiplier values, terms of trade — but it is unforgiving, and a wrong figure early in a question can carry through several parts.

The internal assessment is a portfolio of three commentaries, each on an article the student selects, each addressing a different unit of the syllabus, each limited to 800 words and each marked out of 15. The portfolio is marked internally by the school and moderated externally. At HL it carries 20% of the final grade; at SL the same portfolio carries 30%, which is the single biggest structural difference between the two levels and the reason an HL student cannot afford to treat Paper 3 as an afterthought.

Put together, the external papers carry 80% of an HL Economics grade and the portfolio carries 20%. The weightings matter for planning: a student with a strong portfolio and a weak Paper 3 is in a worse position than the reverse, because Paper 3 is worth 30% on its own and the portfolio closes in DP2 term two while Paper 3 is sat in the examination session. Always confirm current weightings, timings and rubric wording against the published subject guide on ibo.org or with your school's DP coordinator before planning around them.

Where Economics HL marks actually go missing

  • Evaluation missing from 15-mark parts — the single largest recoverable loss
  • Diagrams drawn but never referenced in the written answer
  • Paper 2 answers that ignore the supplied text and figures
  • Paper 3 calculation slips carried forward through later parts
  • Commentaries that summarise the article rather than analyse it

Five failure modes account for most of the gap between a 4 and a 6 in HL Economics, and each is visible on a marked script. The first is the evaluation band in the 15-mark parts. A student explains an effect clearly, then concludes by restating it. The command term asked them to discuss, evaluate or assess, which requires weighing the effect against a counter-effect, a time horizon, a magnitude or an assumption. A paragraph that begins "however, in the short run" and ends with a reasoned preference is the difference between 9 and 13 out of 15.

The second is diagram integrity. Economics diagrams carry marks for axes, labels, correct shifts and an indicated equilibrium, and they carry further marks for being referred to in the prose. A correct diagram that the text never mentions is decorative. The third is data neglect in Paper 2: the paper supplies a text and figures precisely so the final answer can quote them, and answers that could have been written without ever reading the extract cap themselves in the middle band.

The fourth is Paper 3 arithmetic. Elasticity signs, percentage-change bases, the split of an indirect tax between producer and consumer, the value of the multiplier from a marginal propensity — these are routine calculations under no time pressure and they are repeatedly lost through rounding, unit confusion or a dropped negative. They are also the easiest marks on the HL paper to secure, because they are drillable to near-certainty in six or seven sessions.

The fifth is the commentary that reads as a summary of the article. Criterion C rewards application and analysis of theory to the specific situation in the source; a paragraph that paraphrases the journalist earns little. The fix is mechanical: every paragraph of a commentary should contain a piece of economic theory, a piece of the article, and a sentence connecting them. A tutor marking a draft against the criteria will tell you which paragraphs fail that test, and the student rewrites those paragraphs themselves.

04

The internal assessment, criterion by criterion

The Economics internal assessment is a portfolio of three commentaries. Each responds to a published article, each addresses a different syllabus unit, each is capped at 800 words and each is marked out of 15 across five criteria. The total is 45 raw marks, scaled to 20% of the Higher Level grade. Because the criteria are published, a draft can be scored before the school ever sees it, and the student can be told precisely which criterion is costing them.

In practice the marks cluster. Criterion A, on diagrams, is usually either full or near-full once a student has been shown that an unlabelled axis costs a mark. Criterion B, on terminology, is similar: use the term, use it correctly, use it where it belongs. Criterion C, application and analysis, is where competent students sit in the middle band, because they explain theory accurately in the abstract and connect it loosely to the article. Criterion D requires the chosen key concept to be genuinely woven through rather than named in the introduction. Criterion E, evaluation, is the one most often simply absent from a first draft.

The honest boundary matters here more than anywhere else on this page. A tutor may teach the theory, explain the criteria, question a draft, point at a paragraph that does not connect to the article and ask what the student thinks is missing. A tutor may not write any part of the commentary, rewrite a paragraph, supply sentences to paste in, or edit a draft to completion. Under IB academic-honesty rules that is malpractice, and the consequence falls on the student: a withheld Diploma, not a refunded invoice. Any service offering to supply a finished Internal Assessment is selling your child's candidacy.

A workable cycle runs to three or four passes per commentary. Pass one checks the article: is it inside the permitted publication window, is it from a different source than the other two, does it actually contain enough economics for the chosen unit. Pass two scores the structure. Pass three scores the draft against all five criteria in writing. Pass four checks compliance — word count, cover sheet, diagram labels, citation. Always verify the current rubric, word limit and article-window rules against the live subject guide on ibo.org or with the school's teacher before submitting.

05

What a marked script tells you that a school report does not

  • A predicted grade summarises; a marked script localises the loss
  • Four different causes produce the same reported 4
  • Ask for the marked work after four weeks, not for a progress impression
  • The parent reads the trend, not the economics

A Dubai school report gives you a predicted grade, an attainment grade and a sentence or two of comment. It is a summary produced for a cohort, and it is accurate at the level it operates. What it cannot tell you is why the number is what it is. A 4 in Economics HL can come from weak macroeconomics, from strong understanding ruined by timing, from a Paper 3 calculation problem, or from writing that never evaluates. Those four students need four different interventions, and the report looks the same for all of them.

A marked script tells you which one you have. When a tutor returns a Paper 2 attempt with the marks itemised part by part, the shape of the loss is visible: full marks on parts (a) to (d), half marks on the calculation, three out of fifteen on the final evaluation. That is not a grade, it is a diagnosis, and it points at one fixable behaviour. Three such scripts across a month tell you whether the behaviour is changing.

This is why a working arrangement should produce documents, and why IB Gram's Economics HL sessions end with something written. A marked timed question. A commentary draft scored A to E. A diagram set with the deductions circled. A short note of what the next session will cover and why. The parent does not need to understand price elasticity to read any of that; they need to see that this week's loss is not the same as last week's.

Set a plain test for any tutoring arrangement in Dubai, ours included. After four weeks, ask to see the marked work. If the answer is that lessons are going well and the student seems more confident, the arrangement may still be worth keeping, but you have no evidence either way. If the answer is a folder of annotated scripts with the mark on each, you can judge for yourself whether the trend goes up.

06

Sixteen weeks to the May session, counted backwards

Dubai IB schools sit the May examination session, and the useful way to plan Economics HL support is backwards from it rather than forwards from today. The table below counts in weeks before the session opens rather than in dates, for one reason: IB session and results dates in this project are not independently verified, because ibo.org blocks automated retrieval. Confirm every date with your school's DP coordinator or on ibo.org directly before you build a plan on it.

What the backwards count exposes is how early the portfolio stops being available as a lever. The three commentaries are internally deadlined and moderated; by the time a DP2 student is sixteen weeks from the session, the portfolio is usually finished and the 20% it carries is fixed. Everything still in play from that point is examination technique across three papers — which is good news, because examination technique moves faster under focused work than understanding does.

The count also catches two Dubai-specific collisions. Ramadan falls inside the UAE academic year and shortens school days, which changes when revision can realistically happen; the practical answer is usually a shift to post-Iftar sessions rather than a pause. And the Dubai school calendar's spring break lands close enough to the session that families routinely travel during the period they had mentally reserved for revision. Both are manageif planned in January, and neither is manageable in April.

Use the row that matches where your child is now. A student at twelve weeks out with a Paper 3 problem has time for a full calculation block and six timed papers. A student at four weeks out has time for timed practice on the two components with the heaviest weighting and nothing else; attempting to rebuild macroeconomics understanding in that window costs marks elsewhere.

What Economics HL tutoring costs in Dubai, and what moves the number

Dubai has a wide and poorly documented tutoring market. Three of the six competitor pages examined for this project publish no price at all, and the two that do quote US dollars, which is not the currency a Dubai family transacts in. The figures below are market bands in AED, attributed to the source that published them, and they are not IB Gram's price list. Our own arrangement starts with a free trial lesson and a consultation, and the rate for a specific subject and level is quoted after that conversation.

Four things move the number in this emirate specifically. Level is the first: Higher Level commands more than Standard Level because the HL extension content and Paper 3 narrow the pool of people who can teach it. Format is the second, and it is the largest single factor — an in-home visit in Dubai prices in the tutor's travel time across a city where a cross-town trip at 17:00 can take 50 minutes, and Bestimate's 2026 rate table puts in-home one-to-one at AED 180-350 against lower online bands.

The third factor is proximity to the session. Rates quoted in February for an April start are generally higher than the same arrangement booked in September, because supply of specialists who can teach Paper 3 is fixed and demand is not. The fourth is the coursework question: commentary review is a different kind of work from teaching a unit, it is slower per hour, and it is priced accordingly by most providers.

Context worth holding alongside the rate: KHDA confirmed in May 2026 that private-school fees in Dubai would not rise for the 2026-27 academic year, under the emirate's second economic incentives package. School fees being flat does not make tutoring cheaper, but it does mean a tutoring budget set last year is not being squeezed from the other direction. The sensible comparison is not the hourly rate but the total cost of the plan — two sessions a week for twelve weeks is a number a family can actually assess.

Online versus an in-home Economics tutor in Dubai

This comparison deserves a straight answer rather than a defence, because the two formats genuinely differ and the honest case for online in Economics HL rests on one specific fact: scarcity. Dubai is a large market for tutoring and a small market for this particular subject at this particular level. The people who can mark a commentary against criterion E and drill terms-of-trade calculations are few, and a family restricted to tutors who can physically reach Mirdif by 17:30 is choosing from a fraction of that already small group.

An in-home arrangement has real advantages and it is worth naming them. A tutor in the room can see a student's working as it happens without any technology in between, can pick up a pen, and can read the mood of a 17-year-old who says they are fine. For younger students and for subjects where the work is physical, those advantages are substantial. IB Gram does not sell that format in the UAE: it is available from us only in India, and a Dubai family that wants a tutor in the room should hire locally and will pay the market's in-home band for it.

What online gives an Economics HL student is specific rather than general. The tutor is chosen for the subject rather than for the postcode. Screen-sharing suits diagram work, because a shifted curve can be drawn, undone and redrawn in seconds and the final version saved. Annotated scripts arrive as files that accumulate rather than as paper that is lost. Sessions can be recorded with consent, which matters most in the fortnight before a session when a student wants the Paper 3 explanation again. And no part of the hour is spent on travel, by anybody.

The scheduling point is not trivial in this city. A 90-minute in-home session in Dubai Marina booked for 17:00 commonly occupies a tutor from 16:10 to 19:05, and that cost sits inside the rate whether or not it appears as a line item. Online, the hour is the hour. Families who switch usually report the same two changes: more consistent attendance, and a visible pile of marked work.

Academic honesty: what an Economics tutor may and may not touch

  • Permitted: teaching theory, explaining criteria, scoring drafts, asking questions
  • Not permitted: writing, rewriting, supplying text, or editing to completion
  • The sanction for malpractice falls on the student, not the provider
  • Official papers and mark schemes are linked and cited, never redistributed

Economics HL carries 20% of its grade in work that must be the student's own, and this SERP contains services that sell completed Internal Assessments outright. One of them was found during research advertising finished IAs at a fixed price. Buying one is not a shortcut with a financial downside; it is malpractice under IB rules, and the sanction falls on the candidate. A Diploma can be withheld. That risk is carried entirely by the 17-year-old, not by the vendor.

The permitted boundary is wide enough to be genuinely useful, which is what makes the breach unnecessary. A tutor may teach any theory in the syllabus. A tutor may explain each criterion and what the descriptors mean. A tutor may read a draft the student has written and score it against the published criteria. A tutor may say that paragraph four asserts an effect without a mechanism, and ask the student what the mechanism is. A tutor may check that an article falls inside the permitted window and suits the chosen unit. A tutor may teach how to label a diagram so criterion A is secure.

A tutor may not write any part of the commentary, supply sentences for insertion, rewrite a paragraph, choose the article on the student's behalf and hand over a plan, or edit a draft until it is finished. The practical test we use is simple: feedback is given as questions and scores, and the keyboard stays with the student. If a tutoring conversation ever produces text that the student did not compose, the line has been crossed regardless of intention.

The same boundary applies to the Extended Essay and to TOK, and it applies to past-paper material too. Published mark schemes, syllabus documents and grade-boundary tables belong to the IB, Cambridge or Pearson; they are referenced and linked, not reproduced or distributed as downloads. Any provider offering a library of mark schemes to take away is answering a different question from the one about your child's grade.

KHDA, your school's reporting, and what to ask at the next meeting

  • KHDA regulates Dubai private schools and publishes a six-band inspection rating
  • A school-level rating says nothing about a single minority-subject class
  • IB Gram holds no regulator or board approval, and claims none
  • Ask which component produced the mock grade, not what the grade was

Private schools in Dubai are regulated by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, which u.ae describes as responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate. KHDA inspects annually and publishes a rating on a six-band scale from Outstanding down to Very Weak. Dubai's private sector carried 387,441 students across 227 schools in 2024-25, offering seventeen curricula, with International Baccalaureate students at 7% of enrolment.

What an inspection rating tells an Economics HL parent is limited and worth understanding precisely. The judgement covers the school, across all phases and subjects. It does not tell you how the Diploma Economics class is staffed this year, whether the HL extension content is taught separately from the SL cohort, or whether the teacher marking your child's commentaries has taught the subject before. In a minority subject at a school where IB is 7% of the city's enrolment, those are the facts that affect the grade.

IB Gram is not approved, accredited or licensed by KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, the IB or any examination board, and no page on this site should be read as claiming otherwise. KHDA's Educational Services Permit is a specific instrument issued to training institutes operating premises in Dubai; we operate none. Separately, individuals giving private lessons in the UAE need the MoHRE private tuition work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, which is granted free of charge for two years. A parent can ask any tutor whether they hold one.

Three questions are worth taking to the next parents' meeting, and all three are answerable. Who teaches HL extension content, and is it timetabled separately from the SL group? When are the internal commentary deadlines for each of the three pieces, in writing? And by which component was the mock grade reached — Paper 1, Paper 2, Paper 3 or the portfolio? The third question is the one that tells you what to do next, and it is the one least often asked.

Equivalency, universities and why the Economics HL grade is being chased

  • The Economics HL grade is usually being chased for a named university condition
  • MoE equivalency is a separate process; tutoring is not part of it and is not required
  • British track: five IGCSE/GCSE at E or 3, Arabic and Islamic education excluded, plus one A Level at E
  • No IB points threshold is published here because none was sourced from the Ministry
  • Check whether a target economics degree specifies Maths AA before DP1 selection closes

Behind most Economics HL enquiries from Dubai sits a university condition. A UK offer that specifies 6 in Economics HL, a Dutch or Canadian programme with a points requirement, or a UAE institution that needs the Diploma attested. The grade is being chased for a reason, and the reason determines how much of the plan should be about marks versus about paperwork.

For families planning to use the Diploma inside the UAE, there is a separate process: the Ministry of Education's equivalency and attestation route for secondary certificates. IB Gram does not perform, expedite or guarantee equivalency, and no tutoring is required for it. For British-curriculum students the published requirements are specific — five accredited subjects at GCSE or IGCSE at no less than grade E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that count, plus one A Level at no less than E or two AS Levels at the same grade. One ranking competitor publishes six subjects rather than five.

For the IB route specifically, no points threshold is published here, because none has been read on the Ministry's own pages during research for this project. That is a deliberate omission rather than an oversight: an unsourced equivalency figure repeated across a large set of pages is a large number of wrong answers. Check the requirement on moe.gov.ae or with the emirate's attestation authority, and treat any site that states an IB figure without citing the Ministry with caution.

The route choice that does interact with Economics HL is mathematics. Several economics degrees specify Analysis and Approaches rather than Applications and Interpretation, while Paper 3's statistical work sits closer to AI. A student intending to read economics at a quantitative department should check the named programme's stated requirement before DP1 subject selection closes, and the Dubai Silicon Oasis and Academic City enquiries we see suggest this check is often made a year too late.

Where we tutor

Economics HL demand across Dubai, area by area

Economics HL enquiries do not arrive evenly across Dubai. They cluster where the IB Diploma schools are, and the timing of a workable session differs by area because school-run times and family routines differ. These notes reflect what scheduling actually looks like.

Emirates Hills and Dubai Hills Estate

The densest source of DP Economics enquiries in the city, driven by the Diploma schools on this side of Al Khail Road. Buses reach the villa communities by about 15:45, which makes a 16:30 start realistic without a rushed changeover.

Al Barsha and Dubai Science Park

Several IB schools sit inside a three-kilometre radius here, so DP2 students often share a cohort with neighbours. Sessions at 17:00 work; earlier slots collide with the after-school CAS and sport blocks these schools timetable on site.

Dubai Marina and Jumeirah Lakes Towers

Mostly apartment living with long school commutes northbound in the afternoon. Economics HL sessions here tend to settle at 18:00 or later, and a 60-minute slot works better than 90 because the student has already spent an hour on the bus.

Arabian Ranches and Jumeirah Golf Estates

A strong Diploma catchment with schools inside the communities, which shortens the commute considerably. Families here frequently book two 60-minute Economics sessions a week in DP2 rather than one long one, splitting theory and past-paper marking.

Mirdif and Al Warqa

Served by Diploma schools towards Deira and Festival City. Traffic on the Rashidiya interchange shapes the afternoon, so an 18:30 start is the common request. Economics HL cohorts at these schools are typically smaller than on the Jumeirah side.

Deira, Al Qusais and Dubai Festival City

Long-established IB provision with multi-generational Dubai families. Enquiries here skew towards Economics HL paired with Business Management, and towards support that begins in DP1 term one rather than in the DP2 panic window.

Nad Al Sheba and Meydan

Newer villa communities feeding schools that run both A Level and the Diploma, so students sometimes switch routes mid-Year 12. An Economics HL student who moved across from A Level Economics in October needs the commentary brief explained from scratch.

Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim and Palm Jumeirah

Spread across several curricula, with Diploma students travelling inland to school. The practical constraint is Friday: families in this strip commonly protect Friday afternoons entirely, which pushes Economics sessions onto Sunday to Wednesday evenings.

Dubai Silicon Oasis and Academic City

Close to the university cluster, and the area where Economics HL students most often ask about progression into a UAE-based economics or finance degree. Equivalency and subject-prerequisite questions come up here more than anywhere else in the city.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Emirates Hills, Al Barsha and Dubai Hills Estate

The largest concentration of Diploma Economics teaching in Dubai. Schools in this cluster typically run both HL and SL in the same timetabled class, which means the HL extension content is delivered in separate sessions and is the first thing to slip when a term gets compressed.

  • Dubai International Academy Emirates Hills
  • Dubai International Academy Al Barsha
  • GEMS World Academy Dubai
  • GEMS Dubai American Academy
  • North London Collegiate School Dubai

Deira, Mirdif and Dubai Festival City

Long-standing IB provision with large, settled cohorts. Commentary deadlines at these schools are often set earlier in DP1 than on the Jumeirah side, so a student who starts Economics support in January has already passed the first internal checkpoint.

  • Deira International School
  • GEMS Modern Academy
  • Universal American School Dubai
  • Uptown International School

Arabian Ranches, Nad Al Sheba and Dubai Sports City

Schools here frequently offer the Diploma alongside A Level, so Economics HL classes include students who chose the route late. Those students arrive without the MYP or IGCSE grounding their classmates have and need the four-unit map drawn once, early.

  • Jumeirah English Speaking School (JESS) Arabian Ranches
  • Repton School Dubai
  • Fairgreen International School
  • Nord Anglia International School Dubai

Schools are named here as context for the Dubai IB ecosystem; IB Gram claims no affiliation, partnership or endorsement with any school, group or regulator mentioned on this page.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the evidence, not a description

The useful opening message contains a marked paper, a returned commentary or a report with component grades, plus the school and the DP year. From those documents the first conversation can be about the specific loss rather than about general study habits. Nothing is needed beyond what the school has already given you.

  2. 02

Free trial lesson with an Economics HL specialist

A full one-to-one session over live video, at no cost and with no card details taken. The tutor works through a real question with your child and returns a short written note: what was understood, what was not, and which component the marks are coming from. If the match is wrong, say so and a different tutor is proposed.

  3. 03

A written plan against the weightings

A short plan naming which component the work targets, the number of sessions, and the order of topics. For a DP2 student in January this usually means Paper 3 calculations before anything else, because it carries 30% and improves fastest. The plan says what evidence will exist at four weeks.

  4. 04

Weekly sessions that end in marked work

A fixed slot on Gulf Standard Time, with a timed question marked between lessons. Each marked script shows the mark, the band and the specific lost marks. Commentary drafts come back scored against criteria A to E with written reasons, and the revision is done by the student.

  5. 05

Review at four weeks against the mark record

Four weeks in, the marked work is read together: has the component trend moved, and is the same error recurring. If the trend is flat, the plan changes or the tutor changes. This review is the point of keeping records, and it is a conversation about documents rather than impressions.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The work is visible

Every session produces something readable: a marked script with the mark on it, a commentary scored by criterion, a diagram set with deductions circled. A parent who cannot explain price elasticity can still see whether this month's Paper 2 evaluation mark is higher than last month's.

Matched on Economics HL, not on location

Because lessons run online, the tutor is chosen for the ability to teach Paper 3 and mark against criterion E rather than for proximity to your community. In a subject this thin in Dubai, that is the difference between a specialist and a generalist who is nearby.

The coursework boundary is stated, not implied

Commentary support is feedback on the student's own drafts, given as scores and questions. We do not write, rewrite or complete assessed work, and we say so on the page rather than in the small print. The risk of malpractice falls on the candidate, which makes the boundary non-negotiable.

Sessions built around the Dubai calendar

Slots start after school-run and sport commitments, shift to post-Iftar timing during Ramadan rather than pausing, and are planned around the spring break that sits close to the May session. Scheduling is the most common reason tutoring stops working in this city.

Figures carry a source and a date

Every AED band on this page is attributed to the provider or rate table that published it, and marked as market rate rather than ours. Regulatory statements cite u.ae, KHDA or MoHRE. Where a fact could not be sourced — IB session dates, an IB equivalency threshold — it is left out.

An honest answer about availability

Economics HL specialists are a limited pool and sometimes none is free in the slot a family wants. We say so and offer the next realistic start, rather than booking a generalist into an HL Paper 3 brief and leaving the family to discover the gap in March.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

How is IB Economics HL assessed, and what is each component worth?+

Higher Level Economics is assessed through three external papers and one internal portfolio. Paper 1 is an extended-response paper of 1 hour 15 minutes carrying 20%. Paper 2 is a data-response paper of 1 hour 45 minutes carrying 30%. Paper 3, which exists only at Higher Level, is a 1 hour 45 minute policy paper also carrying 30%. The internal assessment portfolio of three commentaries carries the remaining 20%. The external papers therefore account for 80% of the grade. Confirm current weightings and timings against the published subject guide on ibo.org or with your school's DP coordinator before planning around them.

What does Paper 3 actually ask an Economics HL student to do?+

Paper 3 is the Higher Level policy paper: two compulsory questions, each combining quantitative work with a requirement to recommend and justify a policy response using the material supplied. The calculations are routine in isolation — elasticity coefficients, the split of an indirect tax, a multiplier value, terms of trade — but they are unforgiving, and one wrong figure early can carry through later parts. The recommendation part is where most marks are lost, because students name a policy without defending it against an alternative or stating its limitations. It is the most drillable component on the HL course.

How many Economics commentaries does my child write, and how long is each one?+

The portfolio is three commentaries. Each responds to a published article the student selects, each addresses a different unit of the syllabus, and each is capped at 800 words. Each is marked out of 15 across five criteria, giving 45 raw marks in total, scaled to 20% of the Higher Level grade. The articles must come from different sources and fall within the publication window the subject guide specifies. Compliance failures — an article outside the window, a commentary over the word limit, a missing cover sheet — cost marks before any economics is assessed. Verify current rules in the live subject guide.

Which Economics IA criterion loses the most marks in a first draft?+

Criterion E, evaluation, carries four marks and is usually the weakest part of a first draft — often one or two out of four, because the commentary explains an effect and then stops rather than weighing it against a counter-effect, a time horizon or an assumption. Criterion D, the key concept, is the second most common loss: the concept is named in the opening paragraph and never carried into the analysis. Criteria A and B, diagrams and terminology, are usually recoverable in a single conversation once a student knows that an unlabelled axis costs a mark.

Can a tutor mark my child's Economics HL past papers the way an examiner would?+

A tutor can mark a timed attempt against the published assessment criteria and band descriptors, itemise where the marks were lost, and show which band the answer sits in and why. That is useful and it is what our sessions produce. What nobody outside the examination process can do is replicate an actual examiner's judgement or know unreleased grade boundaries. We also do not describe tutors as current IB examiners unless that status can be evidenced, and examiner status gives no access to marking, boundaries or paper content in any case.

How will I know the Economics HL grade is genuinely moving?+

By reading the marked work rather than asking for an impression. Each session returns a timed question with the mark on it, so after four weeks there is a short series of scores for the same component. If Paper 2 final-part marks have gone from 3 to 7 to 9 out of 15, the trend is visible without any economics knowledge. If every script shows the same recurring error, the plan needs changing. We review that record with you at four weeks and change the plan or the tutor if the trend is flat.

Is Economics HL harder than Economics SL in a way that matters for a Dubai school?+

Yes, in two concrete ways. Higher Level adds extension content — market power, asymmetric information, the Keynesian multiplier, terms of trade, the Marshall-Lerner condition — and it adds Paper 3, worth 30% on its own. The portfolio stays the same three commentaries but carries 20% at HL against 30% at SL, so a strong portfolio covers less of the grade. In Dubai schools where HL and SL sit in one timetabled class, the extension content is often taught in separate sessions, and those are the first to be compressed when a term runs short.

What does an Economics HL tutor charge per hour in Dubai?+

Market rates for IB specialist tutoring in Dubai run roughly AED 200-450 per hour online according to Bestimate's 2026 rate table, with TutorChase publishing AED 270 and Unitors starting IB tuition at AED 200. In-home one-to-one sits higher, around AED 180-350 in that same table and up to AED 500 from independent home tutors, because the rate absorbs cross-city travel. Those are market figures, not ours. IB Gram starts with a free trial lesson and a consultation, and quotes for the specific subject, level and session length after it.

Do you send a tutor to our villa in Dubai for Economics HL lessons?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; sending a tutor to a residence is a service we run only in India. Economics HL tuition for Dubai families is delivered one-to-one over live video, on Gulf Standard Time, with screen-sharing for diagram work and annotated scripts returned as files. The URL you arrived from uses the phrase parents search, and we would rather answer it honestly than sell a format we do not run. If you want a tutor physically in the room, hire locally and expect the in-home market band.

My child is in DP1 at a KHDA-inspected school. Is it too early to start Economics HL support?+

DP1 is the point at which support changes the most, because the portfolio is still open. By the time a DP2 student is sixteen weeks from the May session the three commentaries are usually submitted and the 20% they carry is fixed. Starting in DP1 means article selection can be checked before writing, drafts can be scored against the criteria with time to revise, and the HL extension content can be met before the class reaches it. It also spreads the work, which matters when the commentary deadlines collide with another subject's internal assessment.

Can the tutor help with the Economics IA without crossing an academic-honesty line?+

Yes, and the boundary is specific. A tutor may teach the theory, explain each criterion, check that a chosen article falls inside the permitted window and suits the unit, read a draft the student has written, score it against criteria A to E, and ask what is missing from a paragraph. A tutor may not write any part of the commentary, supply sentences, rewrite a paragraph or edit a draft to completion. Our test is that feedback is given as scores and questions and the keyboard stays with the student. Malpractice sanctions fall on the candidate.

How do you fit Economics HL sessions around Dubai school hours and Ramadan?+

Slots usually start between 16:30 and 19:00 Gulf Standard Time, set by the area: communities with schools inside them can take 16:30, while Marina and JLT families with long northbound commutes generally want 18:00 or later. During Ramadan the UAE school day shortens and the practical answer is to move sessions to post-Iftar timing rather than pause, since pausing in a DP2 spring costs weeks that cannot be recovered. The Dubai spring break sits close to the May session, so travel plans are worth mapping onto the revision schedule in January.

Does Economics HL count towards UAE Ministry of Education equivalency?+

Equivalency is a Ministry of Education process and tutoring is no part of it. For British-curriculum students the published requirement is five accredited subjects at GCSE or IGCSE at no less than grade E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that count, plus one A Level at no less than E or two AS Levels at the same grade. For the IB route no points threshold is stated on this page, because none was read on the Ministry's own pages during research. Check moe.gov.ae or the emirate's attestation authority directly, and be wary of sites quoting an unsourced IB figure.

What happens if no Economics HL specialist is free when we enquire?+

We say so and give you the next realistic start date, rather than placing a generalist into a Higher Level brief. Economics HL at the level that includes Paper 3 calculation work and criterion-level commentary feedback is a limited pool, and demand concentrates in the months before the May session. If the gap matters, the usual options are a different weekly slot, a shorter focused block on a single component, or a start date with a specific tutor named. Availability is disclosed before any payment, not discovered in March.

How many weeks of Economics HL support does a DP2 student usually need before the May session?+

It depends which component is weak, and that is why the first conversation asks for marked work. A Paper 3 calculation problem is typically six to eight focused sessions, because the question types are finite and drillable. A missing evaluation habit in the 15-mark parts takes longer, around ten to twelve weeks of weekly timed practice with marking, because it is a writing behaviour rather than a knowledge gap. Rebuilding macroeconomics understanding from a low base needs a term. A student four weeks out should work only on the heaviest-weighted component.

Start with a marked script, not a sales call

If you are looking for an IB DP Economics HL home tutor in Dubai, the first useful step is sending whatever the school has already given you: a marked paper, a returned commentary, or a report with component grades. The free trial lesson is a real one-to-one session over live video with an Economics HL specialist, and it ends with a short written note of what was understood, what was not, and which component the lost marks are coming from. No card details are taken for the trial. If the match is wrong, tell us and we will propose a different tutor. If it is right, you will have a folder of marked work to read inside a month.
