IB DP Chemistry SL Home Tutor in Dubai

Most families searching for an IB DP chemistry SL home tutor in Dubai have a symptom rather than a diagnosis: a 4 on a report, a mock that went badly, a child who says the subject makes no sense. Different symptoms have different causes and wildly different prices. This page works through the symptoms first, puts an AED figure against each likely fix, and tells you plainly when the answer is to buy nothing. Teaching happens one-to-one over live video, scheduled around a Dubai school week.

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

Work out what is wrong before you work out what to spend

A Dubai parent whose child has come home with a 4 in Standard Level Chemistry is usually offered one product: weekly tuition, for a term, at a rate between AED 150 and AED 300 an hour. Sometimes that is exactly right. Often it is an expensive answer to a question nobody asked properly. A 4 in Chemistry SL can mean at least six different things, and only two of them are solved by weekly chemistry lessons.

Here are the six. The student has a content gap from a specific strand, usually stoichiometry or energetics, and everything built on top of it is unstable. The student understands the chemistry and cannot write it to the command term, so answers that describe when they should explain lose method marks. The student's mathematics is the limiting factor, and every chemistry hour is spent working around rearrangement and logarithms. The student is not revising in any structured way, so lessons land and leach away by Friday. The student has a confidence problem with timed papers specifically and performs fine on untimed work. Or the student is coasting, in which case tuition becomes an outsourcing of effort and the grade moves nowhere.

Each of those has a different price. The content gap is the most expensive at four to eight sessions. The command-term problem is cheap, often two sessions, because it is a writing habit rather than a knowledge deficit. The mathematics problem is not a chemistry purchase at all and buying chemistry hours for it wastes every dirham. The revision problem needs one session on method and then nothing. The timed-paper problem needs marked papers rather than teaching. And the coasting problem needs a conversation at home that no provider can sell you.

This is why we run a free diagnostic session before quoting anything. Not a sales call with a tutor profile at the end, but a working session over live video in which a specialist looks at your child's actual marked work, identifies which of the six it is, and writes it down. You keep the written finding whether you buy anything or not, and it is useful on its own: a parent who knows the problem is command-term discipline can ask the school to focus on it for nothing.

Standard Level matters to the arithmetic, because it is a smaller course than families assume. Chemistry SL is 150 taught hours and it excludes most of what makes Higher Level expensive: the mechanism-heavy organic work, combined spectroscopic determination, buffers and solubility products, entropy and Gibbs free energy, and electrode potentials beyond the simple cases. A tutor quoting a Standard Level brief as though it were Higher Level is charging for content that is not on the syllabus. One thing to be clear about before anything else: IB Gram does not send tutors to homes in Dubai or anywhere in the UAE, so nothing below describes a visit. Home visits are part of our India service only.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Standard Level Chemistry is sat inside the Diploma, but the decision about how much help it needs depends heavily on what came before it. Below are the three stages Dubai students pass through, and what each leaves behind.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects with three at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS. Chemistry at Standard Level is 150 taught hours across six strands, assessed by two written papers and one internally marked scientific investigation. For many students it is a Standard Level choice made to satisfy the sciences requirement rather than a passion, which changes what good support looks like: efficiency, not enrichment.

Dubai Diploma students typically carry Chemistry SL alongside two or three Higher Levels that matter more to them, which makes it the subject that gets the least independent study time in the household. The practical implication is that Dubai families should buy fewer, sharper chemistry hours and protect the student's own revision time for the Higher Levels, rather than adding a weekly commitment that competes with them.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Four assessment criteria, integrated sciences, no timed papers in the Diploma sense. Students leave MYP strong on investigation design and weak on quantitative chemistry, because the mole has rarely been drilled. For a Standard Level student that gap is narrower than for a Higher Level one, and two or three focused sessions on quantities usually close it entirely.

Where a Dubai school runs MYP directly into the Diploma, the Standard Level chemistry class can contain students with very different quantitative backgrounds sitting side by side. If your child is the one who came through MYP and the class is pitched at ex-IGCSE students, the symptom looks like a chemistry problem and is actually a sequencing problem, which a short block fixes rather than a term.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE and the British route

Cambridge or Pearson IGCSE Chemistry, or Combined Science, to Year 11. A student with separate IGCSE Chemistry at grade 7 or above should find Standard Level comfortable and may need no paid support at all. A Combined Science background is the single most common reason a Dubai Standard Level student struggles, because the depth assumed in DP1 was never taught.

The IGCSE grade is also the piece of evidence most Dubai parents already have and rarely use. Pull out the actual IGCSE paper breakdown rather than the overall grade: a student who scored well on the multiple-choice paper and badly on the structured one has a writing problem that will repeat in the Diploma, and knowing that before DP1 starts is worth more than a term of lessons after it goes wrong.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Standard Level Chemistry sits in a six-subject timetable, and the honest question is often which subject genuinely needs the money. Below is what each of the common Dubai Diploma companions assesses, so you can rank them rather than defaulting to the one with the worst grade.

Chemistry

Standard Level

Six strands across 150 taught hours: the particulate model, bonding and structure, classification of matter, what drives reactions, how much and how fast and how far, and reaction mechanisms at introductory depth. Two written papers and one investigation. Marks leak at quantities, sign conventions and command-term precision.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Modelling, statistics and technology-assisted methods. The subject most often responsible for a chemistry symptom. If a student can describe a trend but cannot rearrange an equation to find a constant, chemistry hours will keep hitting the same wall until the algebra is addressed.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Calculus, functions, algebra and trigonometry. Carries the logarithmic work that pH and rate questions depend on. A diagnostic worth running before any chemistry purchase: give the student a bare rearrangement task with no chemistry context and see what happens.

Biology

HL and SL

Unity and diversity, form and function, interaction and interdependence, continuity and change. Shares the command-term problem with chemistry almost exactly, which means one session on the difference between outline, explain and discuss pays off across two subjects at once.

Physics

HL and SL

Mechanics through to nuclear and quantum physics. Overlaps chemistry at energetics and atomic structure. Students taking both often find that fixing uncertainty treatment and graph interpretation once improves the data-based section of both subjects' Paper 1.

Environmental Systems and Societies

HL and SL

Ecosystems, biodiversity, pollution, climate and resource use, counting for either the sciences or the individuals and societies group. A route some Dubai students take when Standard Level Chemistry is not working and no university requirement depends on it. A coordinator conversation, not a tutoring one.

Business Management

HL and SL

Organisational structure, marketing, finance and operations, with a written assessment task. Common in Dubai timetables next to a Standard Level science. Mentioned here because families often discover the chemistry grade matters less to the application than they assumed once they check the actual requirements.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Textual analysis, the individual oral and written papers. The reason it belongs on this list is the command-term overlap: a student whose chemistry answers describe when they should explain usually has the same habit in essay subjects, and the fix transfers.

Arabic and the UAE mandatory subjects

School-set

Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies are required in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed curriculum. They occupy real timetable hours, which is a practical constraint on when chemistry support can be scheduled and a reason some Dubai weeks have no spare evening at all.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways to buy Standard Level chemistry support, ordered from the smallest commitment upward. The first is free and is where we would rather you started. All teaching happens over live video.

Diagnostic session only

One free session over live video in which a chemistry specialist works through your child's marked papers and recent classwork, identifies which of the six common causes is actually operating, and writes it down. Plenty of Dubai families stop here, take the written finding to the school, and spend nothing. That is a legitimate outcome and we will say so when it is the right one.

  • No payment, no card details, no obligation to continue
  • Works from your child's real marked work, not a generic assessment
  • A written finding naming the cause and the smallest useful fix
  • Useful even if you never book a paid session

A short targeted block

Two to five sessions aimed at one named problem: quantities, command-term discipline, sign conventions, or timed-paper technique. Deliberately short, with a defined end. Most Standard Level problems that tuition can solve are solved inside five sessions, and a provider who proposes a term before diagnosing anything is selling a subscription rather than a fix.

  • One named target agreed before the first session
  • Finishes on a stated date rather than rolling onward
  • Marked work at the start and the end so the change is visible
  • Extendable only if the marked work says it should be

Weekly across a term

The right pattern for a genuine content gap across several strands, or for a student who arrived in Dubai mid-year and missed taught material outright. Appropriate when the diagnostic says the problem is wide rather than narrow. Reviewed at six weeks against marked papers, with stopping treated as a normal outcome rather than a failure.

  • For wide content gaps, not for single misconceptions
  • Fixed slot on Gulf Standard Time, including weekend mornings
  • Session notes each week so repetition is visible to you
  • Six-week review against marked papers, with an honest recommendation

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

Six symptoms, six causes, six prices

The table below is the core of this page. It takes the way a Standard Level chemistry problem actually presents itself in a Dubai household, names the cause that usually sits behind it, and attaches a realistic number of sessions and an AED range using the published market band of roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour for a qualified online subject tutor. Unitors publishes IB tuition from AED 200 within that band and EdFlik advertises from AED 45 to 65 at the budget end.

Notice how uneven the prices are. Two of the six cost almost nothing to address and one cannot be addressed with tutoring at all. That asymmetry is the single most useful thing a Dubai family can know before they start spending, because the default product on offer, weekly lessons for a term, is priced for the most expensive case and sold to everyone. If your child's problem is that they describe when the question says explain, you are being quoted ten times what the fix costs.

Use the table as a conversation structure rather than a lookup. Take your child's last two marked chemistry papers and ask which row the lost marks sit in. If the marks went on questions the student had the knowledge for and answered loosely, it is the command-term row. If they went on multi-step calculations where the chemistry was right and the algebra collapsed, it is the mathematics row. If the student lost marks on content never properly taught, it is the content row, and that is the one worth a term.

What Standard Level chemistry does not contain, and why that matters to the bill

  • Standard Level is 150 taught hours; the Higher Level extensions are not in it
  • No mechanism-heavy organic work at Higher Level depth
  • No combined spectroscopic structural determination
  • No buffers, solubility products, entropy or Gibbs free energy
  • Ask any tutor what your child's course excludes; vagueness is the answer

Families routinely overpay for Standard Level Chemistry because they do not know how much smaller it is than Higher Level. The Standard Level course runs 150 taught hours. It covers the three Structure strands and the three Reactivity strands, and it stops well short of the Higher Level extensions. That is a genuinely different brief, and it should be priced as one.

Specifically, Standard Level does not require mechanistic organic chemistry at Higher Level depth, so the curly-arrow work that makes Higher Level tutors expensive is largely absent. It does not require structural determination by combining mass spectrometry, infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance data. It does not require buffer calculations, pKa and pKb work or solubility products. It does not require entropy and Gibbs free energy. It does not require electrode potentials beyond simple cells. Each of those is a specialist teaching skill, and none of them is what your child needs.

The practical consequence is a question you can ask any prospective tutor in one sentence: which parts of the syllabus does my child's Standard Level course not include? A specialist answers it immediately. Someone quoting Higher Level rates for a Standard Level brief will be vague, because the vagueness is the business model. Confirm the boundary against the subject guide your child's school is actually teaching, since schools adopted the current guides on different timetables and a few Dubai students sat transitional arrangements.

There is a second use for the boundary, which is revision triage. A Standard Level student in the final term has limited hours and often a textbook or an online resource written for both levels. Knowing which chapters and which worked examples belong to Higher Level only saves that student real time, and it stops the demoralising experience of failing at a question that was never on their course. Mark the exclusions in the textbook early, and the revision plan writes itself.

03

When revision actually happens in a Dubai school year

Buying tutoring without looking at the calendar is how Dubai families end up paying for sessions in weeks when no learning is possible. The Dubai academic year typically runs from late August to late June, which puts the Diploma examination session at the far end of a long year. Between those points sit the things that actually determine when revision can happen, and three of them are specific to this country.

The first is Ramadan. School days shorten during the holy month, timings shift, and a teenager fasting through a school day is not going to absorb new chemistry content at five in the afternoon. Ramadan moves roughly eleven days earlier each Gregorian year, so check the official UAE calendar for the year you are planning rather than assuming last year's pattern. What works is moving sessions to post-Iftar timings and switching the content from new teaching to consolidation and marked-paper review. The second is the Eid breaks, which arrive at a point in the spring when families travel and continuity breaks. The third is the internal deadline stack: the scientific investigation, the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge components all have school-set deadlines, and Dubai schools cluster them.

Counting backwards from the examination session is the exercise almost nobody does, and it changes decisions. The table below lists the milestones without attaching dates, deliberately. IB session and results dates are set by the IB and we do not publish them here, because they must be confirmed against the official source or your child's Diploma coordinator rather than taken from a tutoring page. What the table gives you is the order of events and who controls each one, which is the part that does not change.

Does a chemistry grade matter for UAE Ministry of Education equivalency?

This is the question Dubai parents ask late and should ask early, and almost no competitor page in this market addresses it at all. Equivalency is the process by which the UAE Ministry of Education recognises a foreign secondary certificate so a student can use it domestically. It matters for students planning to study at a UAE institution or needing the certificate recognised locally, and it is a regulatory process run by the Ministry, not something any tutoring provider performs, guarantees or influences.

For the British track the requirements are published and specific. A student must show one accredited subject at Advanced Level with a grade of no less than E, or two accredited subjects at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade, and must pass five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates with a grade of no less than E or grade 3. Arabic and Islamic education are not included among those five required subjects. That last detail is worth noting because at least one well-ranking competitor page states that UAE candidates must take six IGCSE subjects, which is not what the published rule says.

For the American track, English proficiency requires a score of 5 in the IELTS academic test, 61 in the TOEFL iBT, or 450 in the reading and writing section of the SAT, and mathematics requires at least 450 in the SAT Math test. For the International Baccalaureate, no points threshold is published that we have been able to read on the Ministry's own pages, so this page does not state one. Verify your own child's position on moe.gov.ae or with the emirate's attestation authority. And note the obvious corollary: tutoring is not a requirement for equivalency, university admission or school progression, and any page implying otherwise is manufacturing urgency.

The investigation at Standard Level: the same twenty per cent, a smaller job

  • Twenty per cent of the grade at Standard Level, same as Higher Level
  • A trivial research question caps the mark however neat the report is
  • One session on question design is the best value on the whole course
  • Feedback on the student's draft is legitimate; supplying text is not
  • Your child's teacher marks it; a paid tutor has no part in that mark

The scientific investigation is worth twenty per cent of the grade at Standard Level, exactly as it is at Higher Level, and it is the same single piece of individual research. That makes it the highest-value component per hour of support on a Standard Level course, because the written papers reward accumulated knowledge while the investigation rewards a handful of decisions made in the first fortnight.

The decision that matters most is the research question. A Standard Level student under time pressure from three Higher Levels will reach for something safe, which usually means measuring a relationship that is already established and leaves nothing to analyse. That report can be immaculate and still score in the middle band, because the criteria reward analysis and evaluation that a trivial question cannot generate. One session spent killing a weak question and building a better one is the single best use of money on this course.

After that, the useful support is narrow: a check that the planned range of the independent variable will actually produce a usable relationship, and a reading of the draft that names where the evaluation is thin or the conclusion has run past its uncertainties. What is never part of a session is text. A tutor does not supply sentences, rewrite paragraphs into better English, or hand over a method to be copied. The report must be the student's own work in their own words. Providers in this market do sell completed reports at around AED 3,750, and that transaction is an academic-integrity breach which puts the student's Diploma at risk, not the seller's.

Who may legally be paid to tutor in Dubai

  • The MoHRE private tuition permit is free and runs for two years
  • Introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023
  • School students aged 15 to 18 and university students are eligible
  • A centre with premises in Dubai needs a separate KHDA permit
  • Never engage your child's own subject teacher as a paid tutor

Before you pay anyone in this market, it is worth knowing that private tutoring here is a permitted and regulated activity rather than an informal one. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is issued through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation. It is granted free of charge for two years, so no legitimate tutor needs to recover a permit fee from you because there is not one.

Eligibility is broader than most parents expect. It covers teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, university students, and school students aged 15 to 18. MoHRE's service page for it is titled 'Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing', lists no fees, states a two-working-day completion time, and runs through the MoHRE smart app, website and e-services system. Individuals tutoring without the permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule has been published, so any specific amount quoted to you should be treated as unverified.

Two further points apply in Dubai specifically. A tutoring business operating from premises with staff is a different legal entity from an individual tutor and requires a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute, with initial approval first and annual renewal at least thirty days before expiry. And do not ask for your child's own subject teacher as a paid tutor. In Abu Dhabi, ADEK's professional-ethics rules bar private and charter school staff from paid private tuition of students at their own school, and the permit's code of conduct also bars serving students affiliated with the tutor's own school. Beyond the rules, it compromises the person who will mark your child's investigation.

07

Knowing when to stop paying

Nobody in this industry has an incentive to tell you when to stop, which is exactly why it belongs on the page. Standard Level Chemistry support should have an end, and for most of the six causes listed earlier that end arrives inside five sessions. A weekly arrangement that has been running for two terms without a defined target has usually become a habit rather than an intervention.

There are three honest stopping signals. The first is that the named target has been hit: the student handles quantities, or writes to the command term, or paces a paper. Mark one, check, stop. The second is that marked work shows no movement after six weeks and the same error recurs each time, which means the approach is wrong rather than insufficient, and buying more of it is the most expensive possible response. The third is that the student has started doing the work independently, which is the actual goal. A tutor who cannot name a circumstance in which you would stop paying them is not planning to let you.

What we do is review at six weeks against marked papers, with stopping treated as a normal and often correct outcome. If the finding is that the remaining gap is mathematical, we say so and point you at mathematics rather than selling you chemistry. If the finding is that the student needs to revise rather than be taught, we say that too, even though it ends the arrangement. The free diagnostic at the start exists for the same reason: a family who leaves with a written finding and spends nothing has still been served properly.

08

If nothing fits your week

Dubai evenings are crowded. Between a late school bus, Arabic and Islamic Education lessons occupying timetable space, two Higher Level subjects demanding independent study, and a family that eats together, some households genuinely have no free weekday hour. That is a real constraint rather than an excuse, and pretending otherwise produces bookings that collapse in week three.

The options that actually work are three. A weekend morning session, which for diagnostic and marked-paper work is better than a tired Tuesday evening and is what we would suggest first. A shorter format: forty-five focused minutes on one named target beats ninety distracted minutes, and Standard Level problems are often narrow enough to suit it. Or a post-Iftar slot during Ramadan, which Dubai families use routinely and which we schedule without fuss.

If no specialist is free in the slot you need, we tell you that rather than booking you with whoever is available. The options then are a different time the same week, a named date when a slot opens with no payment taken until it does, or a specialist whose working day overlaps Gulf Standard Time differently, with the time difference stated plainly before you decide. If we cannot staff the brief well, we say so. A Standard Level student matched to someone vague on the syllabus boundaries will spend a term being taught Higher Level content they do not need, and conclude that tutoring does not work.

One scheduling point is specific to this emirate and worth planning around. Dubai schools must run Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies alongside the licensed international curriculum, and those lessons occupy timetabled hours rather than optional ones. For a Diploma student that means the school day is genuinely full, and the evening is where everything else competes. Buying a short, well-aimed block is therefore not only cheaper than a term of weekly sessions; it is often the only pattern a Dubai week can actually sustain without something else being dropped.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Dubai

The useful local question is not how far a tutor lives from you, since nobody is driving, but what your district does to the evening. These are the Dubai communities Standard Level chemistry requests most often come from.

Jumeirah Village Circle

Dense low-rise apartments with families across many curricula and a long bus run to several campuses. Sessions here commonly start at five or later, and a shorter sharper session beats a long one at the end of that day.

Arabian Ranches

Villa communities with campuses inside or beside them, so the run home is short and a four-thirty start is realistic. The practical gain is that a Standard Level student can do a session and still have the evening for Higher Level work.

The Greens

Apartment living close to the Sheikh Zayed Road corridor, with short school runs and heavy evening traffic for anyone travelling. A district where the case for not having anyone drive is particularly easy to make on arithmetic alone.

Al Furjan

A newer community with growing school provision and families who have often moved within Dubai recently. Mid-year arrivals are common here, and a mid-year arrival into Standard Level Chemistry is a specific brief: catch up on strands taught before the move.

Discovery Gardens

Compact apartments where a quiet study space is genuinely scarce, and where several families share the same school bus route. Weekend morning sessions are disproportionately popular here, and for diagnostic work they are better than a tired weekday evening.

Motor City

Self-contained with its own campuses and a commute that clears early. One of the easier Dubai districts in which to hold a fixed weekday slot across a whole term, which matters if you are buying a block rather than paying session by session.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the marked work, not the worry

The last two marked chemistry papers and the most recent report, plus which strands the school has taught. Marked work is diagnostic; a description of the worry is not. A Dubai family who sends two annotated scripts gets a useful finding in one session instead of three.

  2. 02

    Take the free diagnostic session

A full session over live video at no cost, spent working through the marked papers with a chemistry specialist to identify which of the six common causes is operating. You get a written finding naming the cause and the smallest useful fix, and you keep it whether or not you book anything.

  3. 03

Buy the smallest block that could work

If the finding is command-term discipline, buy two sessions. If it is quantities, buy four and review. We quote the smallest block with a defined end date rather than a term, because most Standard Level problems that tuition can solve are solved inside five sessions.

  4. 04

Measure against marked work, not against feeling

Marked work at the start of the block and at the end, so the change is visible in the only currency that counts. Session notes each week say what was covered and what the student should do before the next lesson, which also makes any repetition obvious to you.

  5. 05

    Stop, extend or redirect

At the end of the block we say which of the three applies. Target hit, stop. No movement and the same error recurring, change the approach or the tutor. Gap turns out to be mathematical, go and buy mathematics instead. Stopping is a normal outcome here and we will recommend it when it is right.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Diagnosis before quotation

The free session looks at your child's real marked work and names which of six causes is operating, because a 4 in Standard Level Chemistry means six different things at six different prices. The written finding is yours whether you buy anything or not.

We will tell you not to buy

Two of the six common causes are not fixable by chemistry tuition at all, and one is fixed in a single session. A provider whose answer to every symptom is a term of weekly lessons is selling a subscription. If your child does not need paid help, we would rather say so.

This course is 150 taught hours and excludes the Higher Level organic mechanism work, spectroscopic determination, buffers, entropy and electrode potentials. We name the boundary and quote against the brief that is actually on the syllabus.

Blocks with an end date

A block is agreed with a named target and a stated finish rather than rolling onward until someone cancels. At the end we recommend stopping, extending or redirecting, and we have a direct interest in saying extend, which is why the recommendation is made against marked work.

Scheduling that fits a Dubai week

Weekend mornings, forty-five minute formats, and post-Iftar timings during Ramadan. Arabic and Islamic Education occupy real timetable hours in Dubai schools and some households have no free weekday evening, which is a constraint we schedule around rather than argue with.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

How do we tell whether our daughter needs a Chemistry SL tutor at all?+

Look at two marked papers rather than at the grade. If marks were lost on content she was never securely taught, usually quantities or energetics, tutoring is the right purchase. If she had the knowledge and answered loosely, the problem is command-term discipline and costs two sessions, not a term. If the chemistry was right and the algebra collapsed, buy mathematics support instead. If the papers show different errors each time and the total is creeping up, she may need nothing but time. The free diagnostic session exists to make that call from the actual scripts, and the written finding is yours regardless.

What can three sessions realistically fix in Standard Level chemistry?+

More than most families expect, provided the target is named first. Three sessions can fix command-term imprecision, which is the habit of describing when the question says explain and costs marks across every structured question. They can establish sign conventions in energetics so enthalpy answers stop losing a mark each time. They can drill the mole, concentration and limiting-reagent work to fluency for a student who half-knows it. What three sessions cannot do is cover a strand that was never taught, or change a student's revision behaviour, or replace work they are not doing between lessons.

Is the problem the chemistry or the way our son revises?+

A simple test separates them. Ask him to attempt a past-paper question on a topic covered six weeks ago, with notes closed, and then the same question with notes open. If the open-notes attempt is strong and the closed-notes one is poor, the chemistry is understood and the retention method is the problem, which one session on method plus independent practice addresses. If both attempts are weak, there is a genuine content gap and that is worth paying to close. Dubai households often discover the first case, which is cheap, after assuming the second, which is not.

Our son takes Chemistry SL only to fill the sciences requirement. Is tuition worth it?+

Often not much of it. If no university course he is applying to specifies chemistry, the sensible goal is a solid grade bought with the fewest hours, not an excellent one bought with many. That argues for a short targeted block on whichever component is leaking most marks, usually Paper 2 structured answers, and protecting his independent study time for the Higher Levels that actually carry his application. Check the requirements on each university's own admissions page first. It is also worth a coordinator conversation about whether a different sciences-group subject would serve him better.

What does Chemistry Standard Level leave out that we should not be paying for?+

A lot, and knowing it protects your budget. Standard Level runs 150 taught hours and does not require mechanistic organic chemistry at Higher Level depth, structural determination by combining mass spectrometry, infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance data, buffer calculations with pKa and pKb, solubility products, entropy and Gibbs free energy, or electrode potentials beyond simple cells. Those are the skills that make a Higher Level tutor expensive. Ask any prospective tutor which parts of your child's course are excluded; a specialist answers in a sentence, and vagueness there usually means a Higher Level rate is about to be quoted.

When does revision actually happen in the Dubai school year?+

Later and in a narrower window than families plan for. The Dubai academic year runs roughly late August to late June, and the stretch before the Diploma session contains the scientific investigation deadline, the Extended Essay submission, school mocks, Ramadan with its shortened school days, and an Eid break when families travel. Realistically, sustained chemistry revision happens in the winter term and the weeks immediately before the papers. The practical move is to finish taught-content catch-up before Ramadan, and use the Ramadan weeks for consolidation and marked papers rather than new material.

During Ramadan, can a Chemistry SL session be rescheduled to after Iftar?+

Yes, and for most Dubai families that is the only arrangement that works. School days shorten, timings shift, and a fasting teenager will not absorb new chemistry content late in a school afternoon. Post-Iftar sessions are scheduled routinely and no notice beyond the normal is needed to switch. What should also change is the content: Ramadan weeks are better spent on consolidation, marked-paper review and investigation drafting than on new strands. Ramadan moves about eleven days earlier each Gregorian year, so check the official UAE calendar for the year you are planning rather than last year's pattern.

Does a Chemistry SL grade count towards UAE Ministry of Education equivalency?+

For the British track the published rule counts five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than E or grade 3, excluding Arabic and Islamic education, plus one A Level at E or two AS Levels at E. For the International Baccalaureate we have found no points threshold published on the Ministry's own pages, so this page does not state one and you should verify your child's position on moe.gov.ae or with the emirate's attestation authority. Equivalency is a regulatory process run by the Ministry. No tutoring provider performs it, influences it, or can guarantee an outcome in it.

She understands it in the lesson and has forgotten it by Friday. What fixes that?+

Not more lessons, which is the expensive mistake. Retention is a function of retrieval practice, and a student who only ever meets chemistry when a teacher is present never retrieves anything. The fix is a specific routine: short closed-notes attempts at past-paper questions on topics from three and six weeks ago, done without help, with the errors logged. One session can set that up and show her how to run it. After that it is her work, not a purchase. If a provider responds to this symptom by proposing weekly sessions indefinitely, they are selling you the problem.

Is a free diagnostic session a real product or just a sales call?+

Judge it by what you leave with. A real diagnostic works from your child's own marked papers, produces a written finding that names the cause and the smallest useful fix, and includes the possibility that the answer is to buy nothing. A sales call works from a generic assessment, produces a tutor recommendation, and arrives at a term of weekly lessons whatever the symptom was. Ask beforehand whether you keep a written finding and whether the session will look at your actual scripts. Ours does both, and a meaningful share of Dubai families take the finding to their school and spend nothing.

Should we buy chemistry hours or mathematics hours first?+

Run the test before deciding. Give your child a bare rearrangement task with no chemistry context: make one quantity the subject of a three-variable equation, then do the same with a logarithm. If that is shaky, every chemistry session will spend part of its time working around it and you will be paying chemistry rates for mathematics teaching. Fix the mathematics first and a surprising amount of the chemistry symptom disappears without a chemistry purchase. If the rearrangement is fluent and the chemistry is still weak, the gap is genuinely chemical and the money belongs there.

What is the smallest sensible amount of Chemistry SL support to buy?+

Two sessions, with a single named target and a stated end. That is enough to fix a command-term habit or establish sign conventions, and it is small enough that being wrong about the diagnosis costs very little. The pattern to avoid is an open-ended weekly arrangement agreed before anyone has looked at marked work, because it is priced for the most expensive diagnosis and sold to every family regardless of which one applies. Start small, measure against marked work, and extend only if the marked work says to.

Our school says she is fine but the mock came back as a 4. Who is right?+

Both, usually, and the gap between them is the diagnosis. Classroom judgement reflects untimed work, participation and coursework, where a capable student looks fine. A mock reflects timed performance with closed notes, which is a different skill. A student who is fine in class and scores a 4 in a mock almost always has a pacing or exam-technique problem rather than a knowledge problem, and that is addressed with marked papers under timed conditions rather than with re-teaching. Ask the subject teacher specifically which components the mock marks were lost on; the answer will usually settle it.

How do we know when to stop paying for chemistry tuition?+

Three signals. The named target has been hit and the marked work shows it, in which case stop rather than drifting into a habit. Six weeks have passed, the same error recurs in every marked paper, and nothing has moved, which means the approach is wrong and buying more of it is the most expensive possible response. Or the student has started doing the work independently, which was the goal all along. Any tutor who cannot describe a circumstance in which you would reasonably stop paying them has not planned for you to stop.

Is a recorded explanation worth as much as a live session at Standard Level?+

For some things, more; for the thing you are usually buying, less. A recorded explanation of a topic is cheap, revisitable and perfectly adequate for content delivery, and there is a great deal of it available at no cost. What it cannot do is watch your child attempt a question and interrupt at the exact moment the reasoning goes wrong, which is where the diagnostic value of a paid session sits. The sensible combination is free recorded material for content and paid live sessions for diagnosis and marked work, which is also the cheapest arrangement that works.

Would moving from Chemistry SL to another sciences subject solve this?+

Sometimes, and it is a coordinator conversation rather than a tutoring one. The sciences group contains alternatives, and Environmental Systems and Societies can count for either the sciences or the individuals and societies requirement, which is why some Dubai students move. Before anything changes, check two things: whether any course your child is applying to specifies chemistry, and how far into the syllabus the new subject's class already is. A late move into a half-taught course trades one problem for a more urgent one. The timing of the switch matters more than the subject.

Find out what is actually wrong, then decide

A 4 in Standard Level Chemistry is a symptom, and the six things it can mean cost between nothing and several thousand dirhams to address. Start with the free diagnostic session: send the last two marked papers, spend an hour over live video with a chemistry specialist, and leave with a written finding that names the cause and the smallest fix that could work. You keep it either way, and if the honest finding is that your child needs a mathematics tutor, a revision routine or simply time, that is what it will say. Nothing is charged, and nobody travels anywhere.
