IB Chemistry Tutor in Dubai Harbour

An IB chemistry tutor in Dubai Harbour should be able to name which calculation type your child is losing marks on and whether the problem is the chemistry or the arithmetic around it. This page works through the course by content: the two organising themes, the calculation families, the mechanism reasoning that defeats most students, and the step up from IGCSE. Lessons run one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time.

  • Calculation types named individually with their characteristic trap
  • Mechanisms rebuilt from electron reasoning, not arrow shapes
  • Separate tutors for Higher and Standard Level

IB & IGCSE in Dubai Harbour

Structure, reactivity, and the calculations in between

The current IB chemistry course is organised around two themes. Structure covers the particulate nature of matter, models of bonding and structure, and the classification of matter. Reactivity covers what drives chemical reactions, how much and how fast and how far they go, and electron transfer. Higher Level adds depth inside each rather than separate content. The IB revised this guide in recent years, so the first thing to settle with the school is which guide the cohort follows, because older resources describe option topics and an extra paper that no longer apply.

Within that structure a chemistry grade is decided by a small number of recurring things. Calculation families: moles and stoichiometry, concentration and titration, energetics with its sign conventions, equilibrium constants, rate expressions at Higher Level, and electrochemical cells. Mechanism reasoning in organic chemistry. Data-based questions with uncertainty. And command-term discipline on extended responses. A student at a 4 is usually losing marks in two or three of those, not across the whole subject.

The distinction that matters most is between the chemistry and the arithmetic around it. A student who understands equilibrium and loses marks because a concentration was expressed per cubic decimetre and treated as per litre has an arithmetic problem presenting as a chemistry problem. Giving them more equilibrium teaching changes nothing. The marked script separates the two in minutes, which is why it is the first thing we ask for and why a reported grade cannot start a plan.

Dubai Harbour sets the practicalities. The district is new, built around a cruise terminal and marina berths, approached through one corridor off King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Street shared with Emaar Beachfront and the Palm Jumeirah approach. There is no school and no tuition centre inside it. Children travel to Al Sufouh, Al Barsha or Jumeirah, leaving before 07:00 and returning after 15:30, so work involving mechanisms or multi-step calculation realistically starts at 17:00. IB Gram teaches one-to-one over live video and does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; home visits are an India-only service.

What follows works through the two themes and what Higher Level adds, sets out each calculation family with its characteristic trap, explains how organic mechanisms should be learned so that an unfamiliar substrate is attemptable, names the three real gaps between IGCSE chemistry and the Diploma course, and describes the data-based questions and the investigation as separate pieces of work. Confirm every weighting and the current guide with your child's teacher before planning around it.

A note on how to read what follows. None of it is an argument that chemistry has become harder or that students have become weaker. The subject is well specified, the mark schemes are available through your school, and the losses are consistent and nameable. What makes them expensive is that they are quiet: a sign convention or a unit conversion produces a plausible answer, and nothing on the page announces that the chemistry was fine. Everything here is checkable against your child's own marked work, which is the test any tutoring claim should pass.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Chemistry is assessed differently at each IB stage and the transferable skills are narrow. This is what each stage rewards and what it leaves to the next.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme sciences

Four criteria out of eight each, covering knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. The design and evaluation habits map onto the Diploma investigation; the quantitative discipline the Diploma assumes is built less reliably here.

Where a school switches to IGCSE after Year 9, students meet tiered written papers and build calculation speed, which is better preparation for Diploma chemistry calculations than criterion marking is.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme chemistry

Two themes, two written papers and a scientific investigation. One paper combines multiple choice with data analysis and the other is extended response. Higher Level sits longer papers across the same themes with additional depth in bonding, energetics, kinetics, equilibrium and electron transfer.

UAE schools sit the May session. The investigation's internal deadline is set by the school and typically falls while the heaviest content is being taught, which is why it has to be scheduled rather than fitted in.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme with DP chemistry

Where chemistry is taken as a DP course inside a Career-related Programme it is marked to full Diploma standards and the tutoring is identical. The career-related study adds its own deadlines, which matters because chemistry already carries a heavy internal component.

CP provision across Dubai is narrow, so a family here pursuing it is choosing between a small number of schools rather than between districts.

A LevelAges 16-18 · Years 12-13

A Level Chemistry, the alternative at 16

Offered by several British-curriculum schools serving this district. Deeper within topics and narrower in breadth, with its own practical assessment model and more hours per subject because a student takes three or four rather than six.

Several medicine, pharmacy and chemical engineering routes expect chemistry at a high level on either pathway; read each programme's current stated requirement on the university's own admissions page.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the content areas and adjacent subjects we match chemistry tutors for. Each entry names what it contains, what Higher Level adds, and the error that characterises it.

The particulate nature of matter

HL and SL

Atomic structure, electron configuration, the mole concept and periodicity, with further depth at Higher Level. The mole work here determines whether every later calculation is reliable, and the failures are unit handling rather than conceptual misunderstanding.

Models of bonding and structure

HL and SL

Ionic, covalent and metallic bonding, intermolecular forces and structure, extended at Higher Level. A student who holds bonding as a vocabulary of labels rather than as electron behaviour can pass DP1 assessments and cannot reason about a mechanism in DP2.

Classification of matter

HL and SL

The organisation of substances and reactions, including the introduction to organic families. Naming conventions learned only by example fail on an unfamiliar structure, which is a small gap with a disproportionate downstream cost.

What drives chemical reactions

HL and SL

Energetics and thermochemistry, with entropy and spontaneity at Higher Level. Sign conventions cause the losses and they cause them silently: a wrong convention produces plausible numbers with the wrong sign, and the student does not notice.

How much, how fast, how far

HL and SL

Reacting quantities, kinetics and equilibrium, with rate expressions and equilibrium constant work extended at Higher Level. Students who apply memorised rules rather than reasoning from the system fail on any question that disturbs two variables at once.

Electron transfer reactions

HL and SL

Oxidation states, half-equations, electrolysis and electrochemical cells, with further cell and electrode work at Higher Level. Mechanical losses dominate: half-equations unbalanced for charge, electrons placed on the wrong side, and cell conventions misapplied.

Organic chemistry and mechanisms

HL and SL

Functional groups, reaction types and mechanisms, extended substantially at Higher Level. The wall of the course: mechanisms learned as arrow shapes reproduce seen reactions and fail on the unfamiliar substrate the papers supply deliberately.

Data analysis and uncertainty

HL and SL

Absolute and percentage uncertainty, propagation, significant figures and graph interpretation. Examinable in the data-based questions and scored again in the investigation's analysis criterion, which makes it the most efficient block in the subject.

The scientific investigation

HL and SL

An individual investigation carrying roughly a fifth of the grade, marked on criteria covering research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. Evaluation is the weakest criterion for most students and the easiest to improve before a final draft exists.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Frequently taken alongside Higher Level chemistry. Logarithms, rearrangement and proportional reasoning are shared ground, so an equilibrium or kinetics calculation problem is often a mathematics problem in chemical clothing.

Biology

HL and SL

The usual third science for students heading towards medicine or the life sciences. The shared skills are uncertainty treatment, graph interpretation and evaluation structure, so investigation coaching in chemistry usually improves the biology investigation too.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Chemistry tutoring works when the tutor watches the calculation and the mechanism being written. These three arrangements do that, and each targets a different family of losses.

Calculation discipline block

Four to six sessions on the calculation families alone: moles and stoichiometry, concentration and titration, energetics with sign conventions, equilibrium constants, and cells. Laid out in full every time, with units written at every line. Dull, measurable and frequently the whole job for a student whose chemistry understanding is sound.

  • Units written at every line rather than at the end
  • One calculation family per session
  • Sign conventions made explicit and checked
  • Measured by marks recovered on the same question types

Mechanism reasoning block

Sessions rebuilding organic mechanisms from electron density, leaving-group behaviour and intermediate stability rather than from memorised arrow patterns. Slower than learning the shapes and it produces a student who can attempt an unfamiliar substrate, which is what the papers supply.

  • Four questions asked of every unfamiliar molecule
  • Arrow patterns derived rather than recalled
  • Bonding gaps closed first if they exist
  • Measured by performance on unseen reactions

Investigation and data block

Uncertainty, significant figures, graph interpretation and the structure of an evaluation, scheduled against the school's internal deadline. The same skills score in the data-based questions and in the investigation's analysis criterion, which makes this the most efficient block in the subject.

  • Uncertainty propagated through real calculations
  • Graphs drawn by hand before any software
  • Evaluation drafted while the method is fresh
  • Feedback on the student's own draft only

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai Harbour

01

The two themes, and what Higher Level adds

Structure and reactivity organise the whole course, and the distinction is more useful than it looks. Structure explains what substances are: atomic structure and electron configuration, the mole as a counting device, periodicity, bonding and intermolecular forces, and the classification of matter. Reactivity explains what they do: what drives a reaction, how much product forms and how quickly and how far, and how electrons transfer. Nearly every difficulty in reactivity traces back to something incomplete in structure.

That dependency is the single most useful planning fact in the subject. A student who cannot reason about bonding from electron behaviour will struggle with organic mechanisms, with intermolecular explanations of physical properties, and with why a particular bond breaks preferentially. Giving that student mechanism practice produces familiarity with the examples practised and no transfer. Closing the bonding gap first takes three or four sessions and makes the next ten productive.

Higher Level adds depth inside both themes rather than new territory: further bonding and structure work, entropy and spontaneity in energetics, rate expressions and the mathematics of equilibrium, and extended electrochemistry. The practical consequence is that a Higher Level gap sits inside material the student already meets, so the repair starts from something familiar. It also means failure concentrated specifically in extension content is evidence about the level rather than about the subject.

The ordering consequence is worth stating directly. A revision plan that works through the syllabus in sequence will usually spend its best weeks on structure content the student half-remembers and arrive at reactivity with the least time, which is the opposite of what the dependencies suggest. Stabilise what the school is currently teaching, then return to the earlier material, which recovers quickly because it was once secure.

Every calculation family, and its characteristic trap

Chemistry calculations are a small, finite set of families, and each one fails in a predictable way. Moles and stoichiometry fail on unit handling: grams against kilograms, cubic centimetres against cubic decimetres, and concentration expressed more than one way. Titration calculations fail on the stoichiometric ratio being taken from the wrong equation or applied in the wrong direction. Energetics fails on sign conventions, silently, because a wrong sign produces a plausible-looking number.

Equilibrium fails on expressions written without checking the states included, and on students applying a memorised rule rather than reasoning from the system when two variables change at once. Rate expressions at Higher Level fail on orders deduced from data by inspection rather than by comparison. Electrochemical cells fail on conventions: which electrode is which, which direction electrons flow, and whether a potential should be added or subtracted.

The reason naming them matters is that each has a different repair and a different timescale. Unit handling is two sessions of mechanical drilling. Sign conventions are one session plus a self-checking habit. Equilibrium reasoning is three or four sessions because it is a reasoning habit rather than a rule. A student losing marks across three families needs three short blocks, not a general chemistry course, and the marked script identifies which three in minutes.

The reason to insist on naming the family rather than the topic is that families cross topics. Unit handling fails in titration, in gas volumes, in equilibrium expressions and in the investigation, so a student who fixes it once stops losing marks in four places. A plan written by topic will meet the same failure four times and treat it as four problems.

Organic mechanisms, learned so that the unfamiliar is attemptable

Organic chemistry is where Diploma chemistry grades are decided, and the reason is specific rather than general difficulty. Students are shown a set of mechanisms and learn them as shapes: this arrow from here to there, in this arrangement. That works perfectly for every example they have seen, and the papers deliberately supply an unfamiliar substrate. The student then has no way to decide what happens, because they never learned why the electrons move at all.

The alternative is to ask four questions of any molecule. Where is the electron density, and where is the deficiency? What makes a particular group able to leave? What stabilises the intermediate that forms? And which route is therefore favoured? A student who can answer those four about an unfamiliar structure can construct a plausible mechanism, and a plausible mechanism built from reasoning collects marks where a half-remembered shape collects none.

This rebuild is slower than learning the shapes, which is the argument for securing bonding during the first year. Where bonding is weak, the first three or four sessions should be bonding rather than mechanisms even though the school has moved on, because four sessions of foundation makes the next eight productive while eight sessions of mechanism drilling on weak foundations produces familiarity with those eight examples. The mock script usually settles the argument: it shows strong marks on seen reactions and weak marks on unseen ones.

There is one shortcut worth allowing. Students should still know the common mechanisms cold, because recall is faster than derivation under timing. The point is that recall should sit on top of reasoning rather than instead of it, so that an unfamiliar substrate has somewhere to go. A student with both is quick on the seen and attempts the unseen, which is the combination the papers reward.

THE FOUR QUESTIONS FOR AN UNFAMILIAR MECHANISM

The three real gaps between IGCSE chemistry and the Diploma

The step up is real and it is not primarily a content step: most IGCSE chemistry reappears, extended. What changes is the quantitative demand, the expectation that a student will explain from a model rather than state a result, and the arrival of uncertainty as an examinable skill. A student who finished IGCSE chemistry with a strong grade and expects the same relationship between effort and marks is usually surprised by the end of the first term.

The quantitative gap is the largest. IGCSE mole calculations are generally single-step with generous time; Diploma calculations are multi-step, often combine two families, and carry a unit or concentration conversion inside them. The explanatory gap follows: IGCSE rewarded a correct statement about why a substance behaves as it does, while the Diploma expects the explanation to run through bonding or energetics explicitly. And uncertainty, barely touched at IGCSE beyond repeat readings, becomes a scoring component in both the data questions and the investigation.

All three are cheap to close in the first term of the first Diploma year and expensive afterwards, because by the time a mock exposes them a year of habit has formed and the student has concluded they are not a chemist. Six to eight sessions in the autumn covering multi-step calculation discipline, explanation from a model, and uncertainty from first principles is the intervention that works. It is not remedial; it is the work the transition requires, and almost nobody schedules it.

05

The data-based questions, and why they are the cheapest marks

  • Uncertainty, significant figures and gradient interpretation are examinable
  • Taught as a formatting rule, uncertainty is dropped under pressure
  • Ask how well each number is known, at each step
  • The same skills score again in the investigation's analysis criterion

One of the written papers combines multiple choice with data analysis, and the data analysis is the most recoverable part of the subject. The skills are finite: stating an absolute uncertainty, converting between absolute and percentage, propagating through a sum, a product and a power, applying significant figures correctly, reading a gradient and saying what it physically represents, and judging whether a conclusion follows from the spread of the data. That is a short list and it is examinable.

It is recoverable because it is taught thinly almost everywhere. Uncertainty is commonly introduced as a rule applied at the end of a calculation, which teaches students to treat it as a formatting requirement. They then omit it under pressure, or propagate it by the wrong rule, and lose marks they had earned. Taught from the question of how well a number is actually known, with that question asked at each step, it becomes something a student can reconstruct in April rather than recall.

The same skills score twice, which is what makes this block unusually efficient. The investigation's data analysis criterion rewards exactly the same competence, so four to six sessions pay in both the written paper and the internally assessed component. Significant figures deserve a specific mention: students either ignore them or apply them mechanically to the wrong step, and a single session on where precision is actually determined removes a steady drip of lost marks across every quantitative question.

06

Command terms on chemistry extended responses

  • Explain in chemistry means running the reason through a named model
  • Many schemes award the steps rather than the conclusion
  • Naming the model in the first line earns a mark and forces a route
  • Two or three sessions, and the habit holds for the rest of the course

The extended-response paper is capped by command terms exactly as every other Diploma subject is. State wants the fact. Describe wants what happens. Explain wants the reason, and in chemistry that nearly always means running the reason through bonding, energetics or kinetics explicitly rather than asserting an outcome. Deduce wants a conclusion drawn from supplied information. Discuss and evaluate want a judgement with both sides. A thorough description where explain was printed is a correct answer to a different question.

Chemistry adds a particular version of this trap. Many questions expect the explanation to name the model being used, and an answer that reaches the right conclusion without identifying the mechanism or the principle may not collect the marks, because the scheme awards the steps. Writing the model in the first line, before the explanation, earns a mark and forces the student to choose a route deliberately rather than arriving at an answer through familiarity.

The repair is two or three sessions and it holds. Take a dozen past extended-response questions, identify the command term and the model each expects, write what each demands before writing any chemistry, then compare the answer against the structure of the scheme rather than its wording. Students who do this stop writing long answers to short questions, which also recovers the time that was previously spent before the final questions were reached.

It is worth checking whether the student actually reads the command term before writing. Many do not, because years of school assessment rewarded thoroughness regardless, and the habit is invisible until someone watches them start an answer. Asking them to underline the term and write what it demands before any chemistry is crude and it works within a fortnight.

07

The investigation, treated as its own piece of work

  • Check apparatus and data volume before the question is fixed
  • Draft the evaluation while the method is fresh
  • Quantitative data makes fabrication easy and malpractice findings likely
  • A tutor questions and gives feedback; the student does all the work

The scientific investigation carries roughly a fifth of the chemistry grade and is marked on criteria covering research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. Because the marks are distributed across those areas, it is lost in pieces: a feasible question with too little data, good data with a two-line evaluation, or a conclusion the data cannot support. Chemistry adds a particular risk because the data is quantitative and therefore easy to fabricate, and invented data is a malpractice matter in itself.

Two interventions carry most of the available benefit and both happen early. A feasibility check before the research question is fixed, covering whether the school has the apparatus and whether the planned measurements will produce enough points to establish a relationship. And drafting the evaluation while the method is still fresh, because a real evaluation names specific limitations of the student's own procedure and distinguishes random from systematic effects, which cannot be reconstructed from memory weeks later.

The boundary is firm. A tutor may test feasibility, explain what each criterion requires and what separates the bands, question the processing, point out missing uncertainties, ask whether the conclusion follows, and give written feedback on a draft the student has written. A tutor may not design the experiment, supply or process data, or write any part of the report. One page researched for this market sells completed internal assessments at a published price, and a student who submits one risks the whole Diploma.

Booking a chemistry specialist from Dubai Harbour

  • Send level, subject guide, the mathematics course, marked paper and deadline
  • The mathematics course often decides what the first block should be
  • Free trial producing a breakdown by content area and calculation family
  • HL chemistry in the spring is scarce; we name the gap rather than substitute

Send the level, which subject guide the school is following, which mathematics course the student takes, the most recent marked paper, the investigation deadline, and the hours that genuinely exist after a bus that leaves before 07:00 and returns after 15:30. The mathematics course is the item families least often include and it frequently changes the first block, because equilibrium and kinetics calculations at Higher Level carry real algebraic and logarithmic demand.

We match a tutor teaching chemistry at that level and propose a weekly slot in Gulf Standard Time, with investigation work placed at weekends where ninety uninterrupted minutes exist. One free trial lesson per student, no card required, producing a written breakdown by content area and calculation family with estimates against each. If the match is wrong after the trial or in week two we change the tutor rather than asking you to persist with it.

The limits, stated before you decide. Higher Level chemistry specialists at popular spring evening hours are among the scarcest matches we make, and when nobody suitable is free we say so and offer a weekend slot or a defined short block rather than substituting a tutor whose depth is in biology. We cannot promise a grade and nobody who has marked a chemistry paper would. And the problem sets between sessions build the fluency that mechanisms and calculations require.

One request for the first message. If a deadline is close, put it in the first line. A deadline in three weeks changes which block we propose, and occasionally changes whether we think the work is worth starting at all, and we would rather tell you that at the outset than after a fee has been paid.

Where we tutor

Dubai Harbour and the communities on its approach road

Chemistry calculations and mechanisms need sustained attention, so the hour matters more than in most subjects. These are the nearby communities and their effect on it.

Dubai Harbour

Towers around the cruise terminal and marina berths with no school or tuition centre inside the district and a single approach corridor. Mechanism work needs 17:00 at the earliest and benefits from a slot that can move on a cruise-call afternoon.

Emaar Beachfront

The adjoining reclaimed peninsula on the same corridor, with an identical school-run pattern and the same scarcity of Higher Level chemistry specialists in the spring.

Dubai Marina

Denser and tram-served with more travelling tutors in the pool. Higher Level chemistry remains among the hardest local matches, particularly in the spring when DP2 families most need one.

JBR

Walkable and long settled with the cluster's most mature freelance market. Families report finding people who will re-teach a topic and few who will work an organic mechanism from electron reasoning rather than from a memorised arrow pattern.

Al Sufouh and Al Barsha

Where most Diploma chemistry in this cluster is taught. Investigation deadlines along this corridor tend to fall within a few weeks of each other, which concentrates demand for design-stage coaching.

The Greens and The Views

Low-rise apartment communities inland of the Marina with a shorter, steadier commute, which makes an earlier weekday chemistry session workable in a way it is not from the Harbour towers.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai Harbour

Al Barsha, Al Sufouh and Umm Suqeim

  • GEMS World Academy Dubai
  • Dubai American Academy
  • Dubai International Academy Al Barsha
  • GEMS Wellington International School
  • American School of Dubai
  • Nord Anglia International School Dubai

Jumeirah, Al Safa and The Meadows

The second commute direction from the Harbour approach. Some of these schools teach organic chemistry earlier in the sequence than others, which changes when the mechanism work becomes urgent for a given student.

  • Emirates International School Jumeirah
  • Emirates International School Meadows
  • JESS Jumeirah

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Confirm the level and the subject guide

Higher or Standard, and which guide the cohort follows. The IB revised the chemistry guide in recent years, and older resources describe option topics and an extra paper that no longer exist, so a student revising from one will work on content that is not examined.

  2. 02

    Tell us the mathematics course

Analysis or Applications, Higher or Standard. Equilibrium and kinetics work at Higher Level carries genuine algebraic and logarithmic demand, and a chemistry calculation problem is frequently a mathematics problem wearing chemical notation. It changes which block comes first.

  3. 03

    Send the marked paper

The script sorts losses into content areas and calculation families, and each family has its own repair and timescale. Unit handling is two sessions; equilibrium reasoning is three or four because it is a habit. A reported grade cannot distinguish them and guessing costs the first month.

  4. 04

    Secure bonding before mechanisms

Where the script shows strong marks on seen reactions and weak marks on unseen ones, the mechanism problem is a bonding problem. Three or four sessions on bonding as electron behaviour makes the following ten productive, even though it feels like going backwards while the school moves on.

  5. 05

    Schedule the investigation separately

Weekend mornings, counted backwards from the school's internal deadline, with the feasibility check before the question is fixed and the evaluation drafted while the method is fresh. Those two sessions carry most of the benefit available in the component.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Calculation families named individually

Moles, titration, energetics, equilibrium, rate expressions and cells each fail in a specific way with a specific repair time. We diagnose by family rather than by subject, which is why a first session can produce estimates rather than impressions.

Mechanisms rebuilt from reasoning

Four questions asked of any unfamiliar molecule, so that arrows are a conclusion rather than a memory. Slower than learning the shapes, and it produces a student who can attempt the unfamiliar substrate the papers deliberately supply.

Bonding secured before the mechanism work

A mechanism problem is usually a bonding problem. Where the script shows seen reactions scoring and unseen ones failing, the first sessions go to bonding even though the school has moved on, because the alternative is familiarity without transfer.

Uncertainty treated as examinable chemistry

Absolute, percentage and propagated uncertainty, significant figures and gradient interpretation score in the data questions and again in the investigation. Taught as a formatting rule they get dropped under pressure, which is why they are so often recoverable.

The mathematics behind the chemistry checked

We ask which mathematics course a Higher Level chemistry student takes, because logarithms, rearrangement and proportional reasoning underpin equilibrium and kinetics and a gap there reads as a chemistry failure on a script.

Coursework support that keeps authorship

We test feasibility, explain criteria, question processing and give feedback on the student's own drafts. We do not design experiments, supply or process data, or write reports, and invented data is a malpractice matter rather than a shortcut.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai Harbour: your questions answered

Which chemistry content area should we work on first?+

Whatever the marked script shows, and the dependency usually points to bonding. Structure explains what substances are and reactivity explains what they do, so nearly every difficulty in reactivity traces back to something incomplete in structure. A student who cannot reason about bonding from electron behaviour will struggle with mechanisms, with physical property explanations and with why one bond breaks preferentially. Three or four sessions there makes the next ten productive, which is why order matters more than volume.

Why does my child get the chemistry right and the number wrong?+

Because the arithmetic around the chemistry is a separate skill and it is rarely taught as one. The usual culprits are unit handling between grams, volumes and concentrations, a stoichiometric ratio taken from the wrong equation, or a sign convention applied inconsistently in energetics. The last is the most dangerous because it is silent: a wrong sign produces a plausible-looking number. Writing units at every line rather than at the end catches most of it, and two sessions install the habit.

How should organic mechanisms be learned?+

By asking four questions of any molecule: where the electron density is, where the deficiency is, what can leave and why, and what stabilises the intermediate. A student who can answer those about an unfamiliar structure can construct a plausible mechanism, and the arrows become a conclusion rather than a memory. Students who learn arrow patterns as shapes reproduce every example they have seen and fail on the unfamiliar substrate the papers supply deliberately.

Why do marks drop between seen and unseen reactions?+

That exact pattern on a script is the clearest diagnostic available in the subject. It means the mechanisms were memorised as shapes rather than derived, and it means the underlying bonding reasoning was never secured. More mechanism practice produces more memorised shapes. The repair is to rebuild from electron density and intermediate stability, which takes longer and transfers. Look for this pattern specifically when reading a mock script, because it changes the whole plan.

How big is the jump from IGCSE chemistry to the Diploma?+

Smaller in content than its reputation and larger in three skills. Calculations become multi-step, often combining two families with a conversion inside them. Explanations must run through bonding or energetics explicitly rather than stating a correct outcome. And uncertainty becomes an examinable scoring component rather than a note about repeat readings. Six to eight sessions in the autumn of the first Diploma year covering those three is the intervention that works and is almost never scheduled.

Are the data-based questions worth separate sessions?+

They are the most efficient block in the subject, because the skills are finite and they score twice. Absolute and percentage uncertainty, propagation through sums, products and powers, significant figures, gradient interpretation and judging whether a conclusion follows from the data spread are examinable in the written paper and rewarded again in the investigation's analysis criterion. Four to six sessions pay in both components, and the topic is taught thinly almost everywhere.

What does "explain" require in a chemistry answer?+

The reason, run through a named model rather than asserted. In chemistry this nearly always means bonding, energetics or kinetics made explicit, and many mark schemes award the steps rather than the conclusion, so an answer that reaches the right outcome by an unexpected route may collect little. Writing the model being used as the first line earns a mark and forces a deliberate route. Two or three sessions sorting past questions by command term changes every answer afterwards.

Does equilibrium ever become reliable, or is it always guesswork?+

It becomes reliable when the student stops applying memorised rules and starts reasoning from the system in front of them. The diagnostic is any question that disturbs two variables at once: a student working from rules will answer one and ignore the other. Teaching the reasoning takes three or four sessions because it is a habit rather than a fact, and it also fixes the rate and cell questions that rest on the same way of thinking about a system.

Should my child's maths course affect the chemistry plan?+

At Higher Level, yes, and families rarely mention it. Equilibrium constants, rate expressions and some energetics work carry genuine algebraic and logarithmic demand, so a Higher Level chemistry student in a lighter mathematics course is frequently losing marks to rearrangement and logarithms rather than to chemistry. Hand them five pure rearrangement tasks with no chemistry context and time them; if they are slow, that block comes before any content work.

Is significant-figure precision worth a whole session?+

It is worth one, and it pays steadily. Students either ignore significant figures entirely or apply them mechanically to the wrong step, which produces a slow drip of lost marks across every quantitative question in the subject. One session on where precision is actually determined, and on carrying it correctly through a multi-step calculation, removes that drip. It also feeds the investigation, where the analysis criterion rewards exactly the same discipline.

When does the investigation need to be started?+

The research question should be settled eight to ten weeks before the school's internal deadline, because that is what leaves room for a feasibility check, a pilot, collection with a repeat when something fails, processing with uncertainty carried through, and an evaluation drafted while the method is still fresh. Ask the school for the deadline in writing at the start of the year. Coaching that starts at the draft stage improves communication and cannot fix an unworkable design.

Can a tutor help if my child's data has already gone wrong?+

Within limits, and honestly. A tutor can question whether the existing data supports any conclusion, help the student write an evaluation that names the specific limitations which produced the problem, and advise whether a repeat is possible in the time remaining. A tutor may not supply replacement data, process the results or write the report. Invented data is a malpractice matter in itself, and a well-argued evaluation of imperfect data scores better than most students expect.

Is Chemistry HL harder than Chemistry SL in content or in volume?+

Mostly in volume and depth within the same two themes, rather than in separate territory. Higher Level adds further bonding and structure work, entropy and spontaneity, rate expressions, the mathematics of equilibrium and extended electrochemistry. That has a useful consequence: a Higher Level gap sits inside material the student already meets. It also means failure concentrated specifically in extension content, with the shared material secure, is genuine evidence about the level choice.

What hour works for chemistry from this district?+

17:00 at the earliest on a weekday and 17:30 if the school run from Al Barsha or Al Sufouh is unreliable, with weekend mornings for the investigation work. Mechanisms and multi-step calculations need sustained attention, and a tired student produces errors that look like misunderstanding and get diagnosed as such. A movable slot also absorbs a cruise-call afternoon, which a fixed arrival time on a single approach corridor does not.
