IGCSE Science Tutor in Dubai Harbour

Choosing an IGCSE science tutor in Dubai Harbour starts with a question most families are never asked: which science route is your child actually on, and what does it allow afterwards. Separate sciences, a coordinated double award and a combined single award produce different numbers of grades and different post-16 options. This page compares all three honestly. Lessons run one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time.

  • The three science routes compared on post-16 consequences
  • Cambridge and Pearson practical models set out separately
  • Honest about when a group class is the better purchase

IB & IGCSE in Dubai Harbour

Three routes, three different futures, one line on the report

Science at IGCSE is offered three ways and the choice is usually made for a student rather than with them. Three separate sciences produce three grades and the fullest preparation for A Level or Diploma sciences. Coordinated Sciences as a double award produces two grades across all three disciplines in reduced depth. Combined Science as a single award produces one. Those are genuinely different outcomes on a transcript, and the decision is normally taken in Year 9 on the basis of sets rather than through a conversation with the family.

The consequence that matters arrives at 16. A post-16 provider reading an application sees how many science grades there are as well as what they say, and a combined single award is thin preparation for A Level Chemistry or Higher Level Biology whatever the grade attached to it. Families discover this when sixth-form applications are being written, which is after the entry has been filed and the route is fixed. Asking in Year 9 or Year 10 what route the school intends, and what evidence that intention rests on, is the single most valuable question in this part of a school career.

The second comparison families in this district should make is between the boards' practical models, because they differ in a way that affects preparation. Cambridge assesses practical skills through either a practical test paper or the alternative written paper, and the school chooses which. Pearson Edexcel assesses practical skills inside the written papers, with no separate component. Preparing for an alternative-to-practical paper and preparing for practical reasoning distributed through theory papers are different pieces of work, and most families do not know which applies.

Dubai Harbour shapes the delivery question. The district is new, built around a cruise terminal and marina berths, approached through one corridor off King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Street shared with Emaar Beachfront and the Palm Jumeirah approach. There is no school and no tuition centre inside it, and children travel to Al Sufouh, Al Barsha or Jumeirah, leaving before 07:00 and returning after 15:30. Two or three science appointments in a week is already a crowded timetable. IB Gram teaches one-to-one over live video and does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; home visits are an India-only service.

What follows compares the three routes on content, grades and post-16 consequences, sets the two boards' practical models side by side, explains how the science basket interacts with Ministry equivalency, says plainly when a group class at a centre is better value than one-to-one, and publishes the market rates with each figure attributed. Confirm the board, code, tier and practical route for each science with your exams officer before acting on any of it.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

The route decision, the tier decision and the technique work each belong to a different year, and the cost of acting late rises steeply. These are the stages families here write to us from.

Y9Ages 13-14 · Year 9

Year 9, when the route is chosen

The year the science route and the likely tier are decided, usually on the basis of sets and informally collected evidence. Students with secure arithmetic, unit handling and graph skills keep the separate-science option open. Those without them are frequently routed to a combined award without the family being asked.

Where a school runs MYP sciences to Year 9 then switches to IGCSE, students meet tiered written papers for the first time and have to learn examination technique from scratch, whichever route they are placed on.

Y10Ages 14-15 · Year 10

Year 10, while the route can still change

Content delivery begins and in many schools the route can still be revisited early in the year. This is also the cheapest point to close unit handling, equation balancing and graph reading, which otherwise become a Year 11 problem in two or three subjects at once.

Ask in Year 10 which practical route the school uses for each science, because preparing for a practical test and preparing for the alternative written paper are different jobs.

Y11Ages 15-16 · Year 11

Year 11, inside the route that was chosen

The route and tier are fixed and the work becomes command-term literacy, calculation discipline and paper strategy across two or three subjects simultaneously. The mock scripts matter more here than in any other year because they show whether one subject is failing or one habit is failing everywhere.

UAE candidates sit Cambridge in June or November and Pearson in May/June or November. The February/March Cambridge series is offered to India only and should never appear in a Dubai plan.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the codes and routes we match tutors to. Each entry says what the qualification produces and what it allows afterwards, because that is the comparison this page exists to make.

Chemistry, Cambridge 0620

Core and Extended

A full separate science producing its own grade, tiered with different paper pairs and grade ceilings. The deepest preparation available for A Level Chemistry or Diploma Chemistry, and the route most post-16 chemistry courses assume a student has taken.

Physics, Cambridge 0625

Core and Extended

A full separate science with its own grade and its own practical component. Students continuing to A Level Physics or Diploma Physics benefit most from this route, because the mathematical and diagrammatic demands are closest to what follows.

Biology, Cambridge 0610

Core and Extended

The broadest of the three separate sciences and the most command-term sensitive. Essential preparation for medicine and life-science routes, which almost always expect separate biology alongside separate chemistry.

Coordinated Sciences, Cambridge 0654

Core and Extended

A double award covering all three disciplines in a coordinated selection and producing two grades. A reasonable route for breadth without three subjects, and accepted by some post-16 science courses but not all. Check with the receiving provider before relying on it.

Combined Science, Cambridge 0653

Core and Extended

A single award covering all three disciplines in the narrowest selection, producing one grade. Sensible where a student's strengths sit outside the sciences, and thin preparation for any post-16 science course, which should be confirmed before the entry is filed.

Pearson Edexcel separate sciences

Single tier per subject

4CH1 Chemistry, 4PH1 Physics and 4BI1 Biology, with practical skills assessed inside the written papers rather than through a separate component. Question phrasing and formula provision differ from Cambridge enough that past-paper practice must match the board.

Pearson Edexcel Double Award science

Single tier

The Edexcel equivalent of a coordinated double award, producing two grades across the three disciplines. The same post-16 question applies: confirm with the receiving provider what it accepts for its own science courses.

Practical skills across any route

Core and Extended

Apparatus choice, sources of error, reading a scale, tabulating results and drawing supported conclusions. Examinable on every route in some form, entirely teachable on paper, and routinely left until the fortnight before the papers.

Mathematics alongside the sciences

Core and Extended

Unit conversion, rearrangement, standard form and graph work underpin every science calculation. A student losing science marks to arithmetic has a mathematics problem presenting as three science problems, and it is diagnosed from the scripts together.

Additional Mathematics 0606

Extended level only

Taken alongside the sciences by students heading towards A Level Physics, Chemistry or Mathematics. Useful preparation where the 0580 algebra is already fluent, and an overreach where it is not, which is the more common case.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

With two or three sciences the format decision matters more than in any single subject, because the week has to hold. These are the three arrangements and what each is for.

One science, one tutor, weekly

A fixed weekly slot per subject with a tutor matched to that code and tier. For three separate sciences at Extended tier that means three appointments, which is the only arrangement where each subject gets diagnosed rather than generally revised. Most families begin with the weakest and add later.

  • Matched to 0620, 0625, 0610 or the Edexcel equivalent
  • Student writes and calculates on a shared page
  • Diagnosis recorded so sessions build rather than repeat
  • Start with one subject and add when the pattern is clear

Centre group class, where it fits

Not something we provide, and included because it is often the better purchase. For Year 9 and much of Year 10, where the need is content exposure, a small group at a centre in the Marina or Al Barsha is good value and the shared pace is no disadvantage. The cost from this district is a second journey.

  • Lower rate per student for content coverage
  • Good value where the need is exposure, not diagnosis
  • Requires a second journey from this district
  • Cannot address an individual habit such as unshown method

Shared-skills block across the sciences

A single block on what all three subjects test identically: command terms, unit conversion, graph construction and reading, results tables and the structure of a calculation answer. Efficient because the gains land in two or three subjects at once, and usually the right first purchase in a crowded Year 11 week.

  • One block, gains in two or three subjects
  • Command terms sorted from past questions in each science
  • Unit conversion drilled mechanically
  • Graph work done by hand before any software

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai Harbour

01

The three routes, compared on what happens after 16

This is the comparison nobody makes and it is the one with lasting consequences. Three separate sciences produce three grades and the fullest preparation for post-16 science courses, because each discipline is covered in its own depth with its own practical component. Coordinated Sciences as a double award produces two grades across a coordinated selection of content, which is genuine breadth in reduced depth. Combined Science as a single award produces one grade across the narrowest selection.

Post-16 providers treat these differently and they publish how. A sixth form offering A Level Chemistry will state what it requires, and that statement frequently assumes separate chemistry. An IB school offering Chemistry at Higher Level will state its own expectation. A combined single award may satisfy a requirement for a science pass and will rarely satisfy a requirement to continue a specific science at a demanding level. None of that is a judgement about the student; it is a statement about what the qualification covered.

The practical step is to ask the school in Year 9 or early Year 10 what route they intend and what evidence it rests on, and at the same time to ask two or three likely post-16 providers what they require for the science courses the student might want. Those two answers together decide whether the route is right. Doing it at the point of sixth-form applications is too late, because the route and the entry are already fixed and the options have closed without anybody choosing to close them.

How many grades a transcript shows, and why it matters

A grade count is information in its own right. A student presenting three science grades has demonstrated performance in three disciplines separately assessed; a student presenting one has demonstrated performance across a narrower selection in one aggregated result. Readers of an application, whether a sixth form, an IB school or a university admissions office, use the count as well as the letters, and they do it quickly and without asking for an explanation.

This interacts with Ministry of Education equivalency in a way worth understanding. On the British track, equivalency counts five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates with a grade of no less than E or grade 3, and Arabic and Islamic education are not included among those five. A double award produces two of those five and a single award produces one, so a student on the combined route needs their remaining subject basket to carry more of the count. That is an arithmetic check worth doing in Year 10 rather than discovering later.

None of this argues that separate sciences are always right. For a student whose strengths sit firmly outside the sciences, three separate sciences consume two years of effort for three grades they will never use, and a single award frees that effort for subjects their application actually needs. The error is not choosing a lighter route; it is choosing it without knowing what it closes, and without the family having been part of the decision.

The two boards' practical models, side by side

Cambridge and Pearson handle practical skills differently and the difference changes what preparation looks like. Cambridge offers two options for the separate sciences and the school chooses: a practical test paper sat in a laboratory with apparatus, or the alternative written paper, which presents an experimental scenario and tests the same reasoning on paper. Pearson Edexcel has no separate practical component for its separate sciences; practical skills are assessed inside the written papers.

For a family considering online tutoring this is more consequential than it sounds, and in a reassuring direction. The alternative written paper tests nothing but written reasoning: apparatus choice, sources of error, reading a scale correctly, completing a results table, and drawing a conclusion the data supports. All of that is taught on a shared page, and every past question can be worked and marked against a scheme. Where the practical test applies, the apparatus handling happens at school and the reasoning still has to be taught separately.

The Pearson arrangement spreads the same requirement through the theory papers, which changes the revision shape rather than removing the requirement. A student on 4PH1 cannot drill practical reasoning as a single block aimed at one paper, so it has to be woven into ordinary topic work. Ask the school which arrangement applies to each of your child's sciences, because it can differ between subjects within one school, and plan the practical preparation a term ahead rather than in the final fortnight.

When a group class is the better purchase

Worth saying plainly, because almost nobody selling tutoring says it. In Year 9 and much of Year 10, where the need is content exposure and consolidation rather than diagnosis, a small group at a centre is good value for science. The student hears the material, works problems alongside others, sees demonstrations, and the cost per hour is lower. If that is the need, buying one-to-one is buying precision that nothing in the arrangement is using.

The calculation inverts in Year 11. The marks a particular student is losing are individual: a circuit redrawn incorrectly, a unit conversion, a command term misread, a mole calculation that hesitates, a structured answer written in the wrong order. A class pitched at a group cannot see which of those applies to your child, because seeing it requires reading one student's script closely and watching them write. That is the point at which one-to-one becomes necessary rather than preferable.

There is also a logistics cost specific to this district that families underestimate. A centre class in the Marina or Al Barsha means a second journey after a school run that already takes ninety minutes of the day, along a single approach corridor, at the hour the whole cluster is moving. For three sciences that is three second journeys a week. Our sessions run over live video and we provide no home visits anywhere in the UAE, so the real comparison is between a video slot and that journey.

What the market charges for science support, with sources

Published rates in this market, read in October 2026 and attributed to whoever stated them. At the budget end, Tutopiya advertises from AED 33 to 52 an hour and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65, typically university-student provision. Unitors publishes IGCSE tuition from AED 150. TutorChase quotes AED 270 for specialist cover. Bestimate's Dubai rate table puts specialists at AED 200 to 450 and above, in-home one-to-one at AED 180 to 350, and BartyED sits at AED 650 at the premium end. Independent home tutors quote AED 200 to 500.

Three sciences multiplies all of that, which is why the format decision carries real money. Three weekly one-to-one sessions with specialists is a substantially larger commitment than one, and Bestimate's monthly estimates for a single hour a week run AED 240 to 600 at the budget tier, AED 600 to 1,200 mid, and AED 1,000 to 2,000 and above for specialist exam-year support. A family running three subjects at the middle tier should do that arithmetic before committing to a term rather than during it.

This is also the strongest argument for the shared-skills block. Where the mock scripts show the same habit failing in all three sciences, three or four sessions on command terms, unit conversion, graph work and results tables produce gains in three subjects for the cost of one subject's block. That is a better purchase than three parallel subject arrangements, and it is the recommendation we make whenever the scripts support it. All figures here describe the market, not IB Gram's rates, which are set after the free trial.

Reading three mock scripts together

  • Read all three scripts side by side rather than one at a time
  • The same habit failing three times needs one block, not three
  • Concentrated losses in one subject point to a real content gap
  • Count unattempted marks on the last page of each paper

This is the diagnostic step that changes a three-science plan and almost nobody takes it. Read the chemistry, physics and biology scripts side by side rather than one at a time. If the losses in all three trace to command terms, unit conversion, graph construction or answer order, that is one habit failing three times and it needs one block of work. If the losses concentrate in one subject while the other two are clean, that is a genuine content gap and the sessions belong there.

Those two findings produce completely different plans and identical report cards. A family reading one script at a time will conclude that their child has three science problems and buy three subject arrangements, which is three times the cost for the same repair and crowds out the independent work that makes any of it effective. A family reading all three together frequently discovers that four sessions on command terms moves all three grades.

There is a third pattern worth looking for: unattempted marks on the last page. Count them in each subject. A student leaving eight marks blank at the end of three papers has a pacing problem rather than three content problems, and the repair is a timing rule plus two or three full papers under genuine conditions. That number is invisible in a percentage and it takes a minute to find, which makes it the highest-return minute available to a parent in a Year 11 spring.

07

Protecting the science a student avoids

  • The avoided subject produces the disappointing grade, not the hardest one
  • A fixed weekly slot removes the daily decision avoidance exploits
  • Write the allocation down and keep it visible
  • Start with one subject or the shared block, then add

In a three-science week one subject always gets the leftovers, and it is reliably the one the student finds hardest. The avoidance is not deliberate and it is not visible until results arrive: a conscientious student who works steadily produces two reasonable grades and one poor one, and nobody can explain why because the effort was there. The explanation is allocation, and allocation responds to structure rather than to encouragement.

The structural fix is to give the weakest subject a fixed weekly slot and let the stronger two share a second, with a fortnightly timed paper rotating between all three. The fixed slot is the part that matters: it removes the daily decision about what to work on, which is the decision avoidance exploits. Write the allocation down and put it somewhere visible, because an allocation held in someone's head reverts to inclination within a fortnight.

This is also the reason we usually recommend starting with one subject rather than three. A family who buys three appointments in week one has crowded out the problem sets that make sessions productive, and from this district has added three second journeys or three evening slots to a day that already loses ninety minutes to the school run. Begin with the weakest subject or the shared-skills block, let the pattern become clear over three or four weeks, and add then.

One signal worth watching for. Ask the student which science they would work on if they had a free hour, and then look at which one they actually did work on last week. Where those two answers differ, the allocation problem is already running, and it will not correct itself without a slot that removes the choice.

Booking science support from Dubai Harbour

  • Send codes, tiers, practical routes, mock scripts and genuinely free hours
  • We will recommend the shared block first when the scripts support it
  • Free trial producing a subject-and-habit breakdown
  • Three specialists take longer to match than one; we say so rather than substitute

Send the board, syllabus code, tier and practical route for each science, the marked mock scripts if the school will release them, and the hours that genuinely exist after a bus that leaves before 07:00 and returns after 15:30. The practical route is the item families almost never have and it changes the preparation plan. The hours are the hardest part with three subjects, which is why we would rather see them honestly than be told what would be ideal.

We match one tutor per subject at that tier and propose slots in Gulf Standard Time. One free trial lesson per student, no card required, producing a written breakdown of lost marks by subject and by habit. Where the scripts show one habit failing across all three sciences we will recommend the shared block first, even though it is a smaller purchase than three subject arrangements, because it is the better one.

The limits. Finding three Extended-tier science specialists with compatible hours takes longer than finding one, and occasionally a particular code and tier has nobody free in a given week. We will say so and offer alternatives rather than putting one generalist across all three, which is the arrangement most likely to produce pleasant sessions and three static grades. We cannot promise a grade, and the problem sets between sessions are the student's own work in each subject.

If a mock window or a practical component is imminent, say so in the first line of the enquiry. A fixed date in three weeks changes which block is worth starting, and occasionally changes our answer about whether it is worth starting at all, which is a conversation better had before a fee than after one.

Where we tutor

Dubai Harbour and the communities on its approach road

Two or three science appointments a week only survive if the slots do. These are the nearby communities and what each does to a crowded week.

Dubai Harbour

Towers around the cruise terminal and marina berths with no school or tuition centre inside the district. With three science slots in a week, a format that loses sessions to a single approach corridor compounds rather than occasionally inconveniences.

Emaar Beachfront

The adjoining reclaimed peninsula on the same corridor with an identical school-run pattern, facing the same difficulty in finding three compatible science specialists locally.

Dubai Marina

Denser and tram-served, and the nearest place with a real supply of centre-based science group classes. Those are good value for Year 10 coverage and cost a second journey from this district after an already long school day.

JBR

Walkable and long settled with the cluster's most mature freelance market. Families here commonly end up with one generalist across all three sciences, which is the arrangement that produces effort without movement.

Al Sufouh and Al Barsha

Where most of this cluster's Year 11 science teaching happens and where most centres sit. Practical route choices differ between these schools and sometimes between sciences inside one school.

Jumeirah Park and The Greens

Communities with their own British-curriculum provision and a steadier commute, which makes fitting two or three science sessions into a week marginally easier than from the Harbour towers.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai Harbour

Al Sufouh, Al Barsha and Umm Suqeim

The main secondary destination from Dubai Harbour, dominated by British provision running IGCSE at 16. Science route and board choices differ between these schools, and setting practice determines which route a student is offered, which is why the question belongs in Year 9.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Ask what route the school intends, and why

In Year 9 or early Year 10, before the entry is filed. Separate, coordinated and combined produce three, two or one grade and allow different things afterwards, and the decision is usually taken on sets rather than through a conversation. The question is the most valuable one available at this stage.

  2. 02

Ask two post-16 providers what they require

A sixth form offering A Level Chemistry and an IB school offering Higher Level Chemistry both publish their own entry requirements, and those frequently assume separate sciences. Two emails in Year 10 settle whether the intended route supports what your child might want to study.

  3. 03

Get the practical route per science

A Cambridge practical test, the Cambridge alternative paper, or Pearson's distributed assessment inside the theory papers. It can differ between sciences in one school, and preparing for the wrong one wastes the block. Nobody will tell you unless you ask.

  4. 04

Read the three mock scripts together

Side by side rather than one at a time. One habit failing in all three sciences needs one block of work; losses concentrated in one subject need subject sessions. Those produce identical report cards and completely different plans, and three times the cost if you get it wrong.

  5. 05

Give the avoided subject the fixed slot

Students neglect the science they find hardest and the neglect is invisible until results day. A fixed weekly appointment in that subject, with the stronger two alternating, removes the daily decision that avoidance exploits. Write the allocation down and keep it visible.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The route compared on consequences

Three, two or one science grade, with different post-16 options attached. We set that out and tell you to ask the receiving providers directly, because the decision closes at final entries and families usually discover it at application time.

Practical models explained per board

A Cambridge practical test, the Cambridge alternative written paper, or Pearson's assessment inside the theory papers. Each needs different preparation, and most families do not know which applies to each of their child's sciences.

Honest about group classes

For Year 9 and early Year 10 science coverage a centre group class is better value than we are. We say so, because a family who buys precision nothing is using concludes the spending was wasted and does not return when it is needed.

Three scripts read together

One habit failing three times needs one block rather than three subject arrangements. That diagnosis is only visible when the chemistry, physics and biology scripts are read side by side, and it saves most of the cost of a three-science plan.

Rates published with sources

Every AED figure is attributed to the provider or market source that published it, read in October 2026. With three sciences the arithmetic matters, and three of seven researched competitor pages publish no price at all.

A structure that protects the avoided subject

A fixed weekly slot for the weakest science, the stronger two alternating, and a rotating fortnightly timed paper. That is a structural fix rather than an exhortation to work harder at something the student finds unpleasant.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai Harbour: your questions answered

Which science route is our child in Dubai Harbour actually on?+

Ask the exams officer for the board, syllabus code and tier for each science entry, in writing. A report card naming three sciences does not reveal whether those are separate 0620, 0625 and 0610 entries or a coordinated award recorded by subject. The distinction decides how many grades appear on the transcript, what post-16 courses will accept, and which specification to revise from, and it is the question families most often never think to ask.

Does a combined single award close off A Level sciences?+

It often limits them, and the only authoritative answer comes from the post-16 providers themselves. A sixth form offering A Level Chemistry publishes what it requires and that statement frequently assumes separate chemistry; an IB school offering Chemistry at Higher Level publishes its own expectation. Ask two or three likely providers in Year 10 while the route can still be revisited. Asking at application time is too late, because the entry is filed and the route is fixed.

How many science grades will each route produce?+

Three separate sciences produce three grades, a coordinated double award produces two, and a combined single award produces one. The count is information in its own right: a reader of an application sees how many science grades there are as well as what they say. It also affects the Ministry equivalency arithmetic, where five accredited subjects are counted and Arabic and Islamic education are excluded from that five.

Which practical component is our child sitting?+

For Cambridge separate sciences, either a practical test paper sat in a laboratory or the alternative written paper, and the school chooses, sometimes differently for different sciences. For Pearson Edexcel separate sciences there is no separate component and practical skills are assessed inside the written papers. Ask subject by subject, because preparing for an alternative paper as a block and weaving practical reasoning into topic work are different pieces of work entirely.

Can practical skills be taught over video?+

The examinable reasoning can, entirely. Apparatus choice, sources of error, reading a scale, completing a results table and drawing a supported conclusion are all written skills, and the Cambridge alternative paper tests nothing else. A shared page lets a tutor watch a results table being filled and intervene when a convention is broken. What video cannot do is handle apparatus for a student, which matters far less for a Year 11 candidate than families assume.

Is Coordinated Sciences a sensible middle option?+

For many students, yes, and it needs the same check as the others. It produces two grades across a coordinated selection of content, which is genuine breadth in reduced depth, and some post-16 science courses accept it while others do not. It is also not a reduced copy of the separate syllabuses: some separate-science topics are absent and some treatments differ, so revising it from 0620 or 0625 resources wastes effort and leaves gaps.

Is one tutor across chemistry, physics and biology ever workable?+

Eventually, if all three need subject work, because chemistry, physics and biology fail in different ways and a specialist in one will not spot the others' patterns. But the first purchase is often not three tutors at all. If the three mock scripts show the same habit failing everywhere, a single shared-skills block on command terms, unit conversion, graph work and results tables produces gains in all three for the cost of one subject's sessions.

How much should a three-science plan cost?+

Market figures read in October 2026 put qualified subject tutors online at AED 150 to 300 an hour and specialists at AED 200 to 450 and above, with monthly estimates of AED 600 to 1,200 and AED 1,000 to 2,000 respectively for one hour a week. Three subjects multiplies that, which is why the shared-skills block is often the better first purchase. Those are other providers' published rates, not ours; ours are set after the free trial.

Why does one science always end up neglected?+

Because students avoid the subject they find hardest, and the avoidance is invisible until results day. A conscientious student who works steadily produces two reasonable grades and one poor one, and nobody can explain it because the effort was genuinely there. The fix is structural rather than motivational: give the weakest subject a fixed weekly slot, let the stronger two share a second, and write the allocation down somewhere visible.

What is the quickest useful thing to check on a mock script?+

Count the marks left unattempted on the last page, in each of the three sciences. A student leaving eight marks blank at the end of three papers has a pacing problem rather than three content problems, and the repair is a timing rule plus two or three full papers under genuine conditions. That number is invisible in a percentage and it takes about a minute per script to find, which makes it exceptional value.

Should we revise from Cambridge or Edexcel science resources?+

Only from the board on each entry confirmation, and check subject by subject because some schools in this cluster use different boards for different sciences. Cambridge 0625 and Edexcel 4PH1 cover similar physics in different house styles with different formula provision, and Edexcel assesses practical skills inside the written papers. Practising the wrong archive trains a student to decode the wrong question format, and the time lost decoding comes out of thinking time.

Our child is on the combined route and now wants to study biology. What can we do?+

Speak to the school before the entry deadline, because the route may still be changeable, and speak to the post-16 providers about what they will accept. If the route is fixed, the realistic plan is to identify the missing content from the two specifications side by side and close it deliberately, which is more achievable over a summer than people expect. Ask the receiving provider what they expect a combined-route student to have covered.

When should practical preparation start?+

A term before the papers, not in the final fortnight. The examinable skills are finite: a limited number of apparatus choices, sources of error, scale-reading traps, table conventions and conclusion structures. Four to six sessions covers them properly for a Cambridge alternative paper, and for Pearson the same reasoning has to be woven into ordinary topic work from the start of Year 11 because there is no single paper to aim a block at.

How many science sessions a week is realistic from this district?+

Two or three in total across all subjects, not four, and that includes mathematics if it is also being supported. Children here lose ninety minutes a day to the school run, and more appointments than that crowd out the problem sets that actually build fluency. One fixed slot for the weakest subject, one alternating slot for the others, and a fortnightly timed paper is the structure that holds through a term.

Ask about the route before you buy any tutoring

Separate sciences, a coordinated double award and a combined single award produce three, two or one grade and allow different things at 16. Ask the school which route it intends and why, ask two post-16 providers what they require, then send us the board, code, tier and practical route for each science with the marked mock scripts and the hours that genuinely exist after the run back to Dubai Harbour. We will read the three scripts together and recommend the cheapest effective block first. One free trial lesson per student, no card required.
