IB Physics Tutor in Dubai Harbour

An IB physics tutor in Dubai Harbour should be able to say which of five themes your child is losing marks in, whether the loss is content or technique, and what Higher Level adds inside that theme. This page sets out all five, the paper structures that test them, and the mathematics the subject quietly assumes. Lessons run one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time, matched to the level.

  • Five course themes diagnosed individually, not as one subject
  • Higher Level extension content named theme by theme
  • The mathematics physics assumes taught explicitly

IB & IGCSE in Dubai Harbour

Five themes, two papers, and a subject that assumes the mathematics

The current IB physics course is organised into five themes covering motion and spacetime, the particulate nature of matter, wave behaviour, fields, and nuclear and quantum physics. Higher Level adds depth inside each theme rather than a separate body of content, which has a useful consequence: a Higher Level gap sits inside familiar territory rather than outside it. The IB revised this guide in recent years, so the first thing to establish with the school is which guide your child's cohort follows, because older resources describe a different structure with an extra paper and option topics.

A physics grade is a pattern across those themes rather than a single level of ability. A student at a 4 is almost never weak in all five. They are usually secure in two, workable in two, and carrying one theme that collapses under examination conditions, with technique losses layered on top. Fields is the theme that most often collapses, and within it the circuit material rather than the field concepts. Identifying which theme and which kind of loss takes one session with a marked script, and it determines everything after it.

The subject also assumes a quantity of mathematics that is rarely stated. Rearranging a multi-variable expression under time pressure, handling indices and standard form, reading and constructing logarithmic plots, propagating uncertainty through a product, and resolving vectors are all prerequisites rather than content. A student who is secure in the physics and insecure in those will produce a script that looks like a physics problem and is not one, and will be given physics teaching that does not touch it.

Dubai Harbour sets the practical constraints. The district is new, built around a cruise terminal and marina berths, approached through one corridor off King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Street shared with Emaar Beachfront and the Palm Jumeirah approach. There is no school and no tuition centre inside it. Children travel to Al Sufouh, Al Barsha or Jumeirah, leaving before 07:00 and returning after 15:30, so multi-step physics problems realistically start at 17:00. IB Gram teaches one-to-one over live video and does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; home visits are an India-only service.

What follows works through the five themes with their characteristic failures and what Higher Level adds to each, sets out what each paper actually tests and how preparation differs between them, names the mathematics the course assumes, explains how command terms cap a physics answer, and describes the investigation briefly as a scheduled component. Confirm every weighting and the current guide with your child's teacher; a tutoring page is a guide to the questions rather than a substitute for the subject guide itself.

Everything below is checkable against your child's own marked work, which is the test any tutoring claim should pass. Ask for the script, ask for a breakdown by theme and error type, and judge the answer against what you can see.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Physics is assessed under different models across the IB stages and the skills that transfer are narrower than families expect. This is what each stage rewards.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme sciences

Four criteria out of eight each, covering knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. The design and evaluation habits map directly onto the Diploma investigation, which is why MYP students often handle that component more comfortably than students arriving from a written-examination system.

Where a school runs MYP to Year 9 and switches to IGCSE, students meet tiered written science papers instead, which builds examination technique and leaves the investigation skills to be acquired in DP1.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme physics

Five themes, two written papers and a scientific investigation. One paper combines multiple choice with data analysis and the other is extended response, so two genuinely different examination skills are tested. Higher Level sits longer papers across the same themes with additional depth.

UAE schools sit the May session. The investigation's internal deadline falls well ahead of it and is the component students most often leave too late for the design stage to be coached properly.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme with DP physics

Where physics is one of the DP courses inside a Career-related Programme it is marked to full Diploma standards, so the tutoring is identical. The career-related study alongside may add applied numerical work, which draws on the same proportional reasoning the physics assumes.

CP provision across Dubai is narrow, so a family here pursuing it is choosing between a small number of schools rather than between districts.

A LevelAges 16-18 · Years 12-13

A Level Physics, the alternative at 16

Offered by several British-curriculum schools serving this district. Narrower in breadth and deeper within topics, with its own practical assessment model and more hours available per subject because a student takes three or four rather than six.

Where both pathways exist in this cluster the choice is genuine, and it should be made on the student's working style rather than on either qualification's reputation.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the themes and adjacent subjects we match physics tutors for. Each entry names what the theme contains, what Higher Level adds, and the failure that characterises it.

Motion, forces and spacetime

HL and SL

Kinematics, Newton's laws, momentum, work, energy and circular motion, with relativity content at Higher Level. The characteristic loss is a free-body diagram drawn with unlabelled or missing forces, after which correct algebra is applied to a configuration the examiner cannot verify.

The particulate nature of matter

HL and SL

Thermal physics, the gas laws and the kinetic model, extended at Higher Level. Marks go on failing to state the assumption in use and on mixing temperature scales mid-calculation, both of which are mechanical and both of which survive untouched into DP2.

Wave behaviour

HL and SL

Oscillations, wave properties, superposition, standing waves and interference, with further diffraction and resolution work at Higher Level. Path-difference arguments asserted rather than shown, and phase relationships described in words where a diagram would have earned the mark, dominate the losses.

Fields

HL and SL

Gravitational, electric and magnetic fields, circuits and electromagnetic induction, with substantial Higher Level extension into field strength, potential and energy. Circuits redrawn incorrectly before any analysis is the single most expensive habit in the whole subject.

Nuclear and quantum physics

HL and SL

Radioactivity, nuclear reactions and energy, the photoelectric effect and quantum ideas, extended at Higher Level. Students handle the concepts and lose marks on orders of magnitude and unit prefixes, because the scales are unfamiliar enough that an error of a thousand looks plausible.

Uncertainties and data analysis

HL and SL

Absolute and percentage uncertainty, propagation, gradient uncertainty read from error bars, and what a line of best fit does and does not justify. Examinable in the data-based questions and scored again in the investigation, which makes it the most efficient block in the subject.

The scientific investigation

HL and SL

An individual investigation carrying roughly a fifth of the grade, marked on criteria covering research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. Its internal deadline is set by the school and is the earliest hard date in the subject.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

The usual companion at Higher Level. Multi-variable rearrangement under time pressure, indices and standard form, and logarithmic plotting are shared ground, so a physics calculation problem is frequently a mathematics problem in a physics question.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Taken alongside physics by students heading towards engineering or medicine. The shared skills are uncertainty treatment, graph interpretation and the structure of an evaluation, so investigation coaching in one subject usually improves the other.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

Physics supplies unusually strong TOK material, because questions about models, measurement, and what counts as evidence for an unobservable entity are genuinely open. A physics tutor can help find examples that withstand scrutiny rather than examples that sound impressive.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Physics tutoring works when the tutor sees the diagram appear. These three arrangements permit that and each targets a different part of the grade.

Theme-targeted weekly sessions

A fixed weekly slot opening on the theme diagnosed as weakest. The student draws and calculates live on a shared page and the tutor stops them at the diagram rather than after the answer, because most physics errors are visible in the representation before they reach the arithmetic.

  • One level, one specialist, same tutor weekly
  • Theme order set by the diagnosis
  • Intervention at the diagram, before the algebra
  • Annotated working retained for revision

Mathematics-for-physics block

Four to six sessions on the mathematics the course assumes and does not teach: multi-variable rearrangement under time pressure, indices and standard form, logarithmic plotting, vector resolution and uncertainty propagation. Frequently the real fix for a student whose physics understanding is sound and whose scripts are not.

  • Rearrangement drilled against a clock
  • Standard form and prefixes made automatic
  • Logarithmic plots drawn by hand first
  • Measured by marks recovered on calculation questions

Paper-specific preparation

Separate blocks for the two papers, because they test different things. Multiple-choice and data-analysis work needs speed and uncertainty technique; extended response needs structure, command-term discipline and stamina. Preparing for them together is why generic revision moves neither.

  • Multiple choice drilled for speed and elimination
  • Data questions worked with uncertainty every time
  • Extended responses written to scheme structure
  • Each paper measured by its own prediction accuracy

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai Harbour

01

The five themes, and what Higher Level adds to each

Treating physics as one subject is the commonest planning error, because the five themes fail independently and for different reasons. Motion and spacetime fails on representation: a free-body diagram with unlabelled forces cannot be credited however sound the reasoning behind it. The particulate nature of matter fails on unstated assumptions and mixed temperature scales. Wave behaviour fails on arguments asserted rather than shown. Fields fails on circuits redrawn incorrectly. Nuclear and quantum fails on orders of magnitude rather than on concepts.

Higher Level adds depth inside each of those rather than new territory, which is strategically useful. A Higher Level student struggling with fields is struggling with an extension of material they already meet, so the repair starts from something familiar rather than from scratch. It also means the Higher Level extension content is where a genuine level problem shows itself: a student who handles the shared material confidently and fails specifically on extension questions is giving you real information about the level choice.

The practical request to make of any physics tutor is for a theme-level diagnosis with the error type attached. A student losing marks evenly across all five themes has a technique problem rather than five content problems, and the fortnight on diagrams, prefixes and command terms will move more marks than any theme revision. A student whose losses concentrate in one theme has a content gap, and the sessions should go there. Those two plans look identical from a grade and opposite from a script.

Two papers, two different examinations

The written assessment splits into a paper combining multiple choice with data analysis and a paper of extended response. Those are not two samples of the same skill. Multiple choice rewards speed, elimination and recognising a distractor; a student who works each option from first principles runs out of time rather than out of knowledge. Data analysis rewards uncertainty technique, graph reading and the discipline of saying what a gradient physically represents. Extended response rewards structure, command-term discipline and the stamina to sustain an argument across several marks.

Preparing for them together is why generic revision so often moves neither. A student weak on multiple choice needs timed sets with elimination practised explicitly, not more content. A student weak on data questions needs the uncertainty block, which is finite and mechanical. A student weak on extended response needs to write answers and mark them against the scheme repeatedly, which is uncomfortable and effective. Three different blocks, three different measures.

Higher Level sits longer versions of both papers, which adds a stamina dimension that is genuinely trainable. Students who have never sat a full-length paper in one sitting before the mock discover that their accuracy falls in the final third, and that is a practice problem rather than a knowledge one. Two or three full papers under genuine timing fix it. Confirm the current paper structure and weightings with your child's teacher, because the IB revises subject guides and an older resource will describe a different arrangement.

03

The mathematics physics assumes and does not teach

This is the most under-diagnosed problem in Diploma physics. The course assumes a set of mathematical skills as prerequisites: rearranging a multi-variable expression quickly and correctly, handling indices and standard form without hesitation, resolving vectors along chosen axes, reading and constructing a logarithmic plot, and propagating uncertainty through products and powers. None of those is taught as physics content and all of them are required constantly.

A student who is secure in the physics and insecure in those will produce scripts that look like physics failures. The explanation is right and the final number is wrong because the rearrangement went astray. The reasoning is sound and the answer is out by a factor of a thousand because a prefix was mishandled. The method is correct and the vector was resolved along the wrong axis. Give that student more physics teaching and nothing changes, because the physics was never the problem.

The diagnosis is straightforward: hand the student five pure rearrangement tasks with no physics context and time them. If they are slow or inaccurate, the mathematics block comes before any theme work, and it is four to six sessions rather than a term. This is also why we ask which mathematics course a physics student takes, because a student in Applications at Standard Level carrying Physics at Higher Level is very likely to need this block and is rarely offered it.

One further sign worth watching for. A student who checks their answer against the expected order of magnitude catches most prefix errors themselves, and a student who never does will keep making them however many times they are corrected. Installing the habit of a written magnitude estimate before any calculation is cheap, dull and removes a whole category of loss.

04

Command terms, and why a correct explanation scores four

  • Explain wants a mechanism; describing it thoroughly does not substitute
  • Many schemes award the steps rather than the destination
  • Naming the principle in the first line earns a mark and forces a route
  • Two or three sessions, and the habit holds for the rest of the course

Physics extended responses are capped by their command term in exactly the way every other Diploma subject is, and physics students are the least likely to have been told so. State wants the fact. Describe wants what happens. Explain wants a mechanism, with the causal step made visible. Determine and calculate want working. Discuss and evaluate want a judgement with both sides. A student who writes a thorough description where explain was printed has written a correct answer to a different question.

In physics there is an additional trap. Many questions want the explanation to proceed through a named physical principle, and an answer that reaches the right conclusion by a different route may not collect the marks, because the mark scheme is awarding the steps rather than the destination. That is why writing the principle being used as the first line of an answer is such a reliable habit: it earns a mark and it forces the student to choose a route deliberately rather than arriving at an answer by familiarity.

The repair is two or three sessions and it is permanent. Take a dozen past extended-response questions, identify the command term and the principle each one expects, write what each demands before writing any physics, then compare the answer against the structure of the mark scheme rather than its exact wording. Students who do this stop producing long answers to short questions, which also recovers time for the questions at the end of the paper that were previously left blank.

05

Fields, and the habit that costs most in the whole subject

  • Circuits redrawn incorrectly produce a perfect analysis of the wrong circuit
  • Redraw, label, mark current direction, identify series and parallel, then calculate
  • Induction fails on sign conventions learned as a mnemonic
  • HL field extension adds algebraic demand on top of the concepts

If one theme deserves separate treatment it is fields, and within it the circuit material. The conceptual content is manageable: potential difference, current, resistance, series and parallel combinations, internal resistance and induction. The losses come from a redrawing error. A student reads a circuit, redraws it to work with, gets the topology wrong, and then performs an impeccable analysis of a circuit that was not on the paper. The marks disappear and nothing in the working reveals why.

The repair is a drawing discipline rather than a teaching one. Redraw the circuit, label every component, mark the direction of conventional current, and identify which components are genuinely in series and which in parallel before writing any equation. Students resist this because it feels slow, and it is strictly faster than the alternative, which is a correct calculation of the wrong thing. Two sessions of enforcement usually install it, and the gain shows up immediately because circuit questions appear on every paper.

Induction adds a second, separate loss: sign conventions and the direction of an induced effect, which students handle by memorising a rule and then misapplying it when the geometry changes. Teaching it from the underlying reasoning rather than from a mnemonic takes longer and survives an unfamiliar configuration, which is what the paper supplies. At Higher Level the field strength, potential and energy material adds algebraic demand on top, which is where the mathematics block often becomes necessary.

At Standard Level the same circuit discipline applies with less algebra on top, which makes it an even faster repair. It is worth doing before anything else in the theme, because every later topic in fields assumes the student can read a circuit correctly.

06

The investigation as a scheduled component

  • Schedule it against the school's internal deadline, not around revision
  • Check apparatus and data volume before the question is fixed
  • Draft the evaluation while the method is fresh, not weeks later
  • A tutor questions and gives feedback; the student does all the work

The scientific investigation carries roughly a fifth of the physics grade and behaves like a deadline rather than like content, which means it has to be scheduled rather than revised. It is marked on criteria covering research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation, and because the marks are spread across those areas it is lost in pieces: a workable question with too little data, good data with a two-line evaluation, or a conclusion the data does not support.

Two interventions carry most of the available benefit and both happen early. The first is a feasibility check before the research question is fixed: does the school have the apparatus, and will the planned measurements produce enough points to establish a relationship? The second is drafting the evaluation while the method is still fresh rather than weeks later, because a real evaluation names specific limitations of the student's own procedure and distinguishes random from systematic effects, and that detail is not reconstructable from memory.

The boundary is firm throughout. A tutor may test the feasibility of a question, explain what each criterion requires, question the data handling, ask whether the conclusion follows, and give written feedback on a draft the student has written. A tutor may not design the experiment, supply or process data, or write any part of the report. Invented data is a malpractice matter in itself, and one page researched for this market sells completed internal assessments outright, which puts the student's whole Diploma at risk.

07

What the first month of physics support should show

  • Week one: a written breakdown by theme and error type
  • Week two: diagram and circuit discipline without prompting
  • Week four: unfamiliar questions of the same type answered correctly
  • Week six: a timed component self-marked, prediction within a few marks

Session one should produce a written diagnosis: lost marks sorted by theme and by error type, with a judgement about whether the dominant problem is content, representation, mathematics or command terms. That document is the plan and the family should be able to read it. A tutor who finishes the first session having explained a topic well but produced no such breakdown will go on improving content knowledge while the grade holds, which is the commonest outcome in this subject.

By the end of week two the diagram discipline should be visible without prompting: forces labelled, circuits redrawn and annotated, axes chosen explicitly. By week four, the same question types that were failing should be answered correctly on unfamiliar examples. By week six the student should sit a timed component, mark it strictly against the official scheme, and predict their own total within a few marks, with the tutor auditing the marking rather than simply providing it.

If those markers do not appear, the diagnosis was wrong, the format is not suiting the student, or the work between sessions is not happening, and all three are better raised in week three than at the end of a term. We would rather change a tutor or a plan early than defend either. Physics in particular rewards problem sets done between sessions: an hour a week can direct those hours and cannot replace them.

The documents matter as much as the sessions. Keep the written breakdown and the marked papers in one place, because a new tutor handed that folder starts where the last one finished rather than spending an hour rediscovering it.

08

Booking a physics specialist from Dubai Harbour

  • Send level, subject guide, the mathematics course, a marked paper and the deadline
  • The mathematics course frequently decides what the first block should be
  • Free trial producing a theme-and-error breakdown with estimates
  • HL physics at popular hours is scarce; we name the gap rather than substitute

Send the level, which subject guide the school is following, which mathematics course the student takes, the most recent marked paper, the investigation deadline, and the hours that genuinely exist after a bus that leaves before 07:00 and returns after 15:30. The mathematics course is the item families never think to include and it frequently changes the first block, because a Higher Level physics student in a lighter mathematics course often needs the rearrangement work before any theme work.

We match a tutor who teaches physics at that level and propose a weekly slot in Gulf Standard Time, with investigation work placed at weekends where ninety uninterrupted minutes exist. One free trial lesson per student, no card required, producing a written breakdown by theme and error type with estimates against each. If the match is wrong after the trial or in week two, we change the tutor rather than asking you to persist.

The limits, plainly. Higher Level physics specialists at popular evening hours are among the scarcest matches we make, and when nobody suitable is free we will say so and offer a weekend slot or a defined short block rather than substituting a tutor whose depth is in another science. We cannot promise a grade and nobody who has marked a physics paper would. And the problem sets between sessions are the student's work, which no arrangement can do for them.

If the enquiry is urgent because a deadline is close, say so in the first line. A deadline in three weeks changes which block we propose and sometimes changes whether we take the work at all, and we would rather say that at the outset.

Where we tutor

Dubai Harbour and the communities on its approach road

Physics problems are multi-step, so an error in step two is invisible until step five and a tired student generates errors that look conceptual. These are the nearby communities and their effect on the clock.

Dubai Harbour

Towers around the cruise terminal and marina berths with no school inside the district and a single approach corridor. Multi-step mechanics needs 17:00 at the earliest, and a movable slot absorbs a cruise-call afternoon that a fixed arrival cannot.

Emaar Beachfront

The adjoining reclaimed peninsula on the same corridor, with an identical school-run pattern and the same scarcity of Higher Level physics specialists locally.

Dubai Marina

Denser and tram-served with more travelling tutors available. Higher Level physics remains among the hardest local matches, which is evidence that the shortage is about the subject rather than the distance.

JBR

Walkable and long settled with the cluster's most mature freelance market. Families describe finding people who will explain a theme again and few who will work a data-based question line by line against the scheme.

Al Sufouh and Al Barsha

Where most Diploma physics in this cluster is taught, with several schools offering both the Diploma and A Level. Investigation deadlines along this corridor tend to cluster within a few weeks.

The Meadows and Jumeirah Park

Villa communities with established provision and a longer but steadier commute, which makes an earlier weekday physics session workable in a way it is not from the Harbour towers.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Confirm the level and the subject guide

Higher or Standard, and which guide the cohort follows. The IB revised the physics guide in recent years and older resources describe a different structure with an extra paper, so a student revising from one of those is working on content that is no longer examined.

  2. 02

Tell us which maths course they take

Analysis or Applications, Higher or Standard. A Higher Level physics student in a lighter mathematics course frequently needs the rearrangement and standard-form block before any theme work, and that is the most under-diagnosed problem in the subject.

  3. 03

Send the most recent marked paper

The script sorts losses into content, representation, mathematics and command terms, which repair on different timescales and in different orders. Evenly spread losses indicate technique; concentrated losses indicate a theme gap. A reported grade cannot distinguish them.

  4. 04

    Separate the paper blocks

Multiple choice needs timed sets with elimination practised. Data questions need the uncertainty block. Extended response needs written answers marked against the scheme. Preparing for all three together is why generic revision moves none of them.

  5. 05

    Schedule the investigation separately

Weekend mornings, counted backwards from the school's internal deadline, with the feasibility check before the question is fixed and the evaluation drafted while the method is fresh. Those two sessions carry most of the available benefit in the component.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Diagnosis by theme and error type

The first session produces lost marks sorted across the five themes and by whether the loss is content, representation, mathematics or command terms. That document is the plan, and families keep it regardless of what they decide next.

The assumed mathematics taught explicitly

Rearrangement under time pressure, standard form, vector resolution, logarithmic plotting and uncertainty propagation are prerequisites the course does not teach. We diagnose them separately, because a mathematics failure reads as a physics failure on a script.

Papers prepared separately

Multiple choice, data analysis and extended response test different skills with different measures. We run them as separate blocks, which is why the progress markers are specific rather than a general sense of improvement.

Circuit discipline enforced

Circuits redrawn incorrectly cost more marks than any other single habit in the subject, and the repair is a drawing routine rather than more teaching. Two sessions of enforcement, with gains on every subsequent paper.

Investigation coached before the question is fixed

Apparatus and data volume checked at the feasibility stage, and the evaluation drafted while the method is fresh. The commonest loss is excellent data with a generic two-line evaluation, which is preventable and not recoverable afterwards.

Material referenced, never redistributed

Papers, mark schemes and subject guides come from your school or the official site. We explain and link them. We do not host or distribute them, because that material is copyrighted and handing it out is not ours to do.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai Harbour: your questions answered

Which physics theme should we work on first?+

Whichever the marked script says, and the answer is usually fields rather than the theme the student finds most intimidating. Fields contains the circuit material, where the dominant loss is a redrawing error rather than a conceptual gap: a student reads a circuit, redraws it wrongly, and performs an impeccable analysis of a circuit that was not on the paper. That repairs in about two sessions of drawing discipline and pays on every subsequent paper, which makes it unusually good value.

Why does my child understand physics and still score 4?+

Because understanding is not what the papers award. They award a labelled diagram, a laid-out calculation, a named principle, and an answer matched to the command term. A student who can explain a situation fluently and draws three unlabelled forces gives the examiner nothing to credit. The pattern is visible in a marked script in minutes: correct reasoning, correct conclusion, missing representation. It repairs in a fortnight and no amount of further explanation touches it.

What if the physics is understood and the numbers keep coming out wrong?+

Very often, and it is the most under-diagnosed issue in the subject. The course assumes multi-variable rearrangement under time pressure, indices and standard form, vector resolution, logarithmic plotting and uncertainty propagation as prerequisites and teaches none of them. Hand the student five pure rearrangement tasks with no physics context and time them. If they are slow or inaccurate, a four to six session mathematics block comes before any theme work, because more physics teaching will not change those scripts.

What does Higher Level actually add to each theme?+

Depth inside the same five themes rather than separate territory: relativity content in motion and spacetime, further thermodynamic treatment in the particulate theme, additional diffraction and resolution work in waves, field strength, potential and energy in fields, and further nuclear and quantum depth. That structure is strategically useful, because a Higher Level gap sits inside familiar material. It also means failure concentrated specifically in extension questions is genuine evidence about the level choice.

How should multiple-choice questions be practised?+

In timed sets, with elimination practised explicitly rather than by working each option from first principles. A student who derives every option runs out of time rather than out of knowledge, and the paper is designed with distractors that reward recognising a plausible-looking error. Track two measures: questions per minute, and which themes the errors cluster in. The second tells you where content work is needed and the first tells you whether the problem was ever content.

Is the uncertainty work really worth separate sessions?+

It is the most efficient block available in physics, because the skills are finite and they score twice. Absolute and percentage uncertainty, propagation through sums, products and powers, gradient uncertainty read from error bars, and what a line of best fit justifies are examinable in the data questions and scored again in the investigation's analysis criterion. Many schools teach uncertainty as a formatting rule applied at the end, which is exactly why those marks are so often recoverable.

Why do extended-response marks stay low when the content is known?+

Command terms, and in physics a second trap alongside them. Explain wants a mechanism with the causal step visible, and a thorough description does not substitute. Many schemes also award the steps rather than the destination, so an answer that reaches the right conclusion by an unexpected route may collect little. Writing the physical principle being used as the first line earns a mark and forces a deliberate route, and two or three sessions on this hold for the rest of the course.

When should the scientific investigation be coached?+

Before the research question is fixed, which is eight to ten weeks before the school's internal deadline in most cases. The two interventions that carry most of the benefit are a feasibility check on apparatus and expected data volume, and drafting the evaluation while the method is still fresh. Coaching that starts at the draft stage can improve communication and cannot rescue a design that could never have produced enough data to support a conclusion.

Does a tired student's physics script look different?+

Noticeably, and it misleads tutors who were not watching the working. Physics problems are multi-step, so an error in step two is invisible until step five, and a fatigued student generates arithmetic and transcription slips that read as conceptual confusion. From this district, where children leave before 07:00 and return after 15:30, a session before 17:00 produces exactly that script. Choosing the hour honestly is worth more than choosing the tutor carefully and hoping.

How many full papers should a Higher Level student sit before the mock?+

Two or three, in one sitting each, under genuine timing. Higher Level papers are long enough that accuracy falls in the final third for students who have never experienced the duration, and that is a practice problem rather than a knowledge one. Sitting a full paper also reveals pacing: count the marks left unattempted on the last page, because that number is invisible in a percentage and is frequently the largest single loss on the script.

Is one appointment enough for Physics HL and Analysis HL together?+

Only where that person genuinely teaches both at the required level, which is less common than it sounds. The overlap is real, so a tutor who teaches Analysis at Higher Level and Physics at Higher Level to a Diploma standard is a legitimate single appointment and can be efficient. What does not work is a physics specialist taking the mathematics because the family asked. Ask which components of each subject they have taught at that level and expect two names if the answer is vague.

What if the losses are spread evenly across all five themes?+

Then it is almost certainly technique rather than five content gaps, and the plan should be a fortnight on representation, prefixes and command terms rather than a tour of the syllabus. Evenly spread losses are the clearest signal available that the content is broadly present and the marks are being lost in how answers are constructed. A tutor who responds to that script with a theme-by-theme revision programme has not read it carefully.

How do we prepare for practical work if lessons are over video?+

The laboratory work happens at school and the examinable skills around it are written. Apparatus choice, sources of error, uncertainty treatment, graph construction and the structure of an evaluation are all taught on paper, and a shared page lets a tutor watch a graph being drawn and intervene when an error bar is wrong. What video cannot do is handle apparatus for a student, which matters for younger children and very little for a Diploma candidate.

Which subject guide is our school using?+

Ask the physics teacher directly; they will answer in a sentence. The IB revised the physics guide in recent years, and older revision books describe a different structure with an additional paper and option topics. A student working from one of those will spend hours on material that is no longer examined and will arrive at the paper expecting a component that does not exist. This is the single cheapest check available and it is rarely made.

Send the script and the maths course

A physics grade is a pattern across five themes with technique and mathematics layered on top, and the two items that identify it are a marked script and the student's mathematics course. Send both, with the level, the subject guide your school follows, the investigation deadline and the hours that genuinely exist after the run back to Dubai Harbour. We will match a specialist at that level and open with a written breakdown by theme and error type. One free trial lesson per student, no card required.
