IB & IGCSE in Dubai Harbour

The subjects nobody advertises, and where the marks actually sit

Search for IGCSE support in this part of Dubai and the results converge on four subjects: maths, chemistry, physics and biology. There is a reason, and it is supply rather than need. Those subjects have the clearest diagnosis, the most abundant resources and the largest tutor pool, so that is where the market forms. Meanwhile a typical Year 11 timetable in this district carries eight to ten subjects, and the two or three grades holding a transcript down are frequently in English, Economics, Business Studies or a humanity.

Those subjects fail in a way that is less visible and more fixable. In English First Language, a student who reads well loses reading marks for retelling a passage rather than selecting from it, and loses composition marks to register drift rather than to grammar. In Economics, a correct diagram with an unlabelled axis scores below what the student knew. In Business Studies, a textbook definition applied to no named organisation collects the first mark and stops. In History, a source question answered without using the source is the single commonest loss on the paper.

None of that is addressed by re-teaching content, which is what a general tutor will do because content is what they can see. It is addressed by working on the student's own written answers against the mark scheme, repeatedly, which requires someone who has read those mark schemes. The tutor pool for that is genuinely thin locally, and it is the main practical reason a family in this district should not be filtering a shortlist by distance.

Dubai Harbour makes that filter particularly unhelpful. The district is new, built around a cruise terminal and marina berths, approached through a single corridor off King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Street shared with Emaar Beachfront and the Palm Jumeirah approach. There is no school and no tuition centre inside it, and children travel to Al Sufouh, Al Barsha or Jumeirah, leaving before 07:00 and returning after 15:30. IB Gram teaches one-to-one over live video and does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; home visits are an India-only service.

What follows works through those subjects by code: English First Language and Second Language, Economics and Business Studies, History and Geography, ICT and Computer Science, and the Arabic, Islamic Education and social studies that Dubai private schools must deliver alongside any international curriculum. Each section names what the paper rewards and where the marks leak. Confirm the board and syllabus code for each subject with your exams officer, because the code decides which past papers are worth working.

One caution about this page's claims. Everything here is checkable against your child's own marked work, which is the test any tutoring advice should pass. If a script shows marks lost evenly across topics, the problem is technique and the technique block is the purchase. If it shows losses concentrated in two topics, that is a content gap and the technique block will not touch it. Ask for the script before buying anything, including from us, and let it settle the question rather than an argument on a web page.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

These subjects need different work at different points, and the useful intervention is earlier than families expect because answer construction is a habit rather than a topic.

Y9Ages 13-14 · Year 9

Year 9, before the course

Nothing external is at stake and writing habits are forming. A student who learns to plan a paragraph, control register and use a source rather than describe it arrives in Year 10 with most of the available marks in the humanities already secured. This is also where subject choices for the IGCSE basket are made.

Several schools serving this district run the MYP to Year 9 before switching to IGCSE, which changes written assessment from criterion-marked tasks to tiered examination answers.

Y10Ages 14-15 · Year 10

Year 10, content and technique together

Content is delivered while answer construction can still be built alongside it. In Economics and Business Studies this is where application marks are won or lost permanently, because a student who learns to name a context in Year 10 never stops doing it.

Worth checking in Year 10 that the subject basket will produce five eligible passes for Ministry equivalency, since Arabic and Islamic education are excluded from that count.

Y11Ages 15-16 · Year 11

Year 11, mark schemes and timing

The work becomes answer construction, timing and paper strategy. In the humanities and business subjects, timing is a larger problem than in maths and science, because extended answers invite over-writing and the last question on the paper is often left unattempted.

UAE candidates sit Cambridge in June or November and Pearson in May/June or November. The February/March Cambridge series is offered to India only.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Each entry gives the code where it determines the paper, then what the examination actually rewards and where marks disappear. These are the subjects this district most often cannot find support for locally.

English First Language, 0500 and 0990

Single tier

Reading response plus directed writing and composition, with the two codes differing in grading scale rather than content. Reading marks go on retelling instead of selecting; writing marks go on register drift, where a letter becomes an essay halfway down the page.

English as a Second Language, 0510 and 0511

Single tier

A different examination with reading, writing and listening components and a speaking element that differs between codes. The listening paper rewards reading each question before the audio plays, which is a practised discipline rather than a language skill.

English Literature, 0475 and 0992

Single tier

Set-text response rewarding close reference rather than plot summary. Students who know the text well and quote nothing specific score in the middle bands, and the repair is mechanical: one embedded quotation per paragraph, used rather than displayed.

Economics 0455

Core and Extended

Diagram-led extended response plus data response. An unlabelled axis or an unmarked shift direction costs more than a weak paragraph, because the diagram is read first. Data response rewards reading the figures before writing the theory.

Business Studies 0450

Core and Extended

Application marks dominate. A definition applied to no named organisation collects the first mark and stops, and evaluation questions need a judgement rather than a balanced list. Case-study technique is teachable in a handful of sessions.

History 0470

Core and Extended

Source-based and essay questions. The commonest loss on the whole paper is answering a source question without using the source, followed by essays that narrate events rather than argue a case against the question asked.

Geography 0460

Core and Extended

Skills, physical and human topics with case-study requirements. Marks go missing because case studies are recalled generically rather than with named places, figures and dates, which is exactly what the mark scheme rewards.

ICT 0417

Core and Extended

Practical components with strict file and evidence requirements. Losses are documentation rather than capability: screenshots missing, filenames wrong, evidence not matching the task order. Entirely preventable with a checklist habit.

Computer Science 0478

Core and Extended

Theory plus algorithmic problem solving. Pseudocode written without declaring variables or without a trace table loses marks that the logic had already earned, and trace tables are the fastest single improvement available.

Arabic as a foreign language

School stream dependent

Dubai private schools must deliver Arabic regardless of the licensed curriculum, and Arab and non-Arab streams are taught separately. Support must match the stream the school has placed the child in and must work with the school's own material.

Accounting 0452 and Additional Mathematics 0606

Core, Extended and Extended only

Both are commonly added late in Year 10 and both assume prior fluency. Accounting rewards layout discipline as much as understanding, and 0606 assumes complete 0580 algebraic fluency from the first lesson.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Essay and application subjects need a format in which the student writes and the tutor reads. These three do that and each serves a different stage.

Weekly written-answer work

A fixed weekly slot in one subject where the student writes a timed answer, marks it against the official scheme, and the tutor audits the marking. Writing beats discussing in these subjects, because the marks are awarded for what is on the page rather than for what the student understands.

  • One timed answer written in every session
  • Student marks it first against the official scheme
  • Tutor audits the marking, not just the answer
  • Progress tracked by prediction accuracy

Technique block across subjects

Three or four sessions on what English, Economics, Business Studies, History and Geography all reward identically: command terms, using a source or a figure rather than describing it, naming a context, and reaching a judgement. One block, gains in several subjects at once.

  • Command terms sorted from past questions in each subject
  • Source and data use drilled explicitly
  • Context naming made automatic
  • Judgement sentences practised until they are routine

Coursework and practical component support

For ICT and Computer Science practical tasks and any coursework element, scheduled against the school's own deadline. The work is on technique, evidence requirements and documentation discipline. The student produces everything; a tutor explains what the component needs and reviews what the student has done.

  • Evidence and file requirements made into a checklist
  • Scheduled from the school's internal deadline
  • Feedback on the student's own work only
  • No files, no completed tasks, no write-ups supplied

English 0500: where a strong reader loses marks

First Language English is the subject that most often surprises families in this district, because a child who reads constantly and writes fluently comes home with a grade in the middle. The explanation is almost always technique. On the reading paper, students answer by retelling the passage when the question asked them to select from it, analyse it, or infer from it. The content is present, the question was not answered, and the mark scheme cannot credit the difference.

On directed writing the dominant loss is register drift. A student is asked to write a letter, a report or a speech, begins correctly, and twenty lines later is writing an essay. Form carries marks on these questions, so the drift costs even where the prose is good. On composition, the problem is shape rather than style: fluent writing with no deliberate structure, no planned ending, and no variation in sentence length to control pace. All three are mechanical and all three improve quickly.

The repair is writing and marking, not reading and discussing. A student who writes one timed response a week, marks it against the official scheme themselves, and has the marking audited will move within a month, because the mark scheme teaches what the examiner wants in a way no amount of advice does. Confirm whether your child sits 0500 or 0990, since the grading scale differs, and whether they are on First Language or Second Language English, because those are different examinations entirely.

Economics 0455 and Business Studies 0450: the application marks

Both subjects are marked on application and both are taught as content, which is the whole problem. In Economics, a question about a price change in a named market wants the diagram drawn for that market, with axes labelled, the shift direction marked, and a sentence explaining what the diagram shows about that market. Students supply a correct generic diagram and a paragraph of theory, which collects the knowledge marks and none of the application marks.

In Business Studies the same pattern appears in prose. A question about a named company's decision wants reasoning that could only apply to that company, drawn from the case material. Students supply a definition and a general advantage and disadvantage, which again collects the first mark and stops. Evaluation questions then want a judgement with a reason, and students supply a balanced list and no conclusion, which caps the answer below the top band however much they know.

Both repairs are short and both are structural. In Economics, draw the diagram first and label it before writing a word; in Business Studies, name the context in the first sentence of every paragraph and finish every evaluation with a judgement sentence that begins with a decision. Four sessions of enforcing those two rules on the student's own answers typically moves both grades, and it is work almost nobody buys because it looks like technique rather than teaching.

There is a third pattern worth naming, common to both subjects. Students answer the question they expected rather than the one printed, particularly where a familiar topic appears with an unfamiliar instruction. A question asking whether a decision was justified is not a question asking what the decision was, and an answer explaining the decision thoroughly collects very little. Reading the instruction aloud before writing is a crude habit and it prevents the most expensive single error in either paper.

History 0470 and Geography 0460: using the material you are given

  • Identify which kind of source question is being asked before answering
  • Write the conclusion in one sentence, then select evidence for it
  • Case studies need named places, figures and dates, learned as facts
  • Skills questions score fastest and are practised least

History papers hand students the evidence they need and the commonest loss on the paper is not using it. A source question asks what a source suggests, how two sources differ, or how useful a source is, and the answer must refer to the source's content, its provenance, or both. Students answer from their own knowledge, which is often correct and cannot score, because the question was about the source. Recognising which kind of source question is being asked is a ten-minute lesson that pays for the rest of the course.

Essay questions fail differently. Students narrate the events in order and reach the end of the available time without having argued anything. The mark scheme wants a case made against the question, with evidence selected because it supports the case rather than because it happened. Writing the conclusion first, in one sentence, and then selecting evidence for it, is the single most effective structural change available in the subject.

Geography loses marks on case studies. The mark scheme wants named places, specific figures and dates, and a student who writes generically about coastal erosion or urban growth collects the general marks and misses the specific ones. The fix is a case-study card per topic with five facts on it, learned as facts. Skills questions, by contrast, are the most reliably scoring part of the paper, and students who practise map, graph and photograph interpretation under timing gain marks faster there than anywhere else in the subject.

04

ICT 0417 and Computer Science 0478: documentation and trace tables

  • ICT marks are lost to filenames, screenshots and evidence order
  • A checklist built before the component prevents nearly all of it
  • Pseudocode needs declared variables and consistent structure
  • Trace tables are avoided because they are dull, and carry real marks

The practical components in ICT are lost on documentation rather than on capability. Evidence requirements are specific: particular screenshots, particular filenames, evidence presented in the order the tasks were set. A student who completes every task competently and submits evidence in the wrong order, or with a file named incorrectly, loses marks that have nothing to do with their ability. A checklist drawn up once, before the component, prevents nearly all of it.

Computer Science fails on a different habit. Algorithmic questions reward pseudocode that declares its variables, uses consistent indentation, and is accompanied by a trace table where one is asked for. Students write logic that works and omit the surrounding structure, then lose method marks. The trace table in particular is the fastest single improvement in the subject: students avoid it because it is tedious, and it is where several marks sit on most algorithm questions.

Both subjects reward a kind of discipline that is easy to teach and difficult to self-impose, which makes them unusually good value for tutoring. Four sessions on evidence requirements and trace tables will typically recover more marks than a term of content revision, and neither requires the tutor to be in the room. What a tutor may not do is complete a task, supply working files, or produce the documentation; the component must be the student's own work and the school supervises it.

One more point about both subjects. They are the two where families most often assume a screen is a disadvantage and where it is arguably an advantage, because the work is produced on a computer anyway. A shared screen lets a tutor watch a file being named, a screenshot being taken and a trace table being filled, and intervene at the moment the convention is broken rather than after the component is submitted and the marks are gone.

Arabic, Islamic Education and social studies alongside IGCSE

Families arriving in Dubai Harbour from outside the UAE are often surprised that their child's timetable includes subjects their curriculum does not set. Dubai private schools must deliver Arabic language, Islamic Education and social and moral studies regardless of the international curriculum they are licensed to teach. The federal position is that private schools are not obliged to follow a specific curriculum beyond those subjects but must follow the Ministry's general regulations, and KHDA's mandatory-subjects guidance set the start of the 2025-26 academic year as the implementation point, with April 2026 for schools whose year begins in April.

The structure has consequences for support. KHDA requires separate classes by group for Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies: combined classes for Arab and non-Arab students are prohibited, because the curriculum expectations and the language of instruction differ. Standard Arabic is required as the main language of instruction for Islamic Education for Arab students and for Arabic as a first language, while for non-Arab students Islamic Education and the moral, social and cultural studies strand are taught in the school's licensed-curriculum language.

Two practical points follow. A tutor has to know which stream the child sits in, because the material is not interchangeable and matching it wrongly wastes the sessions. And for these subjects, the use of any different or additional content without prior permission from the Ministry is prohibited, so support works with the school's own material rather than substituting a parallel syllabus. Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit, with KHDA advising that no mandatory-subject lesson runs shorter than 25 minutes, and schools must ensure teachers of Islamic Education and Arabic hold the appropriate KHDA approval to teach them.

Answer length, timing and the last question on the paper

In the essay and application subjects, timing costs more marks than content. A student who writes a thorough answer to a four-mark question and then has nine minutes for a twelve-mark question has lost marks through allocation rather than through ignorance. This is more acute in English, History, Geography, Economics and Business Studies than in maths and the sciences, because extended answers invite over-writing and there is no natural signal to stop.

The discipline is arithmetic. Divide the available minutes by the available marks before writing anything, write the per-question allowance on the paper, and stop when it is spent. A student who leaves a question half-finished at its allowance and returns to it later scores more than one who finishes it perfectly and never reaches the final question. Most students have never been told this explicitly, and it is the single largest recoverable loss in a humanities paper.

The second half of the discipline is knowing what a mark allowance implies about length. A two-mark question wants two points, not a paragraph. A six-mark question wants development, not a list. A twelve-mark question wants a structure with a judgement at the end. Students who match length to marks finish papers; students who write as much as they know do not. Counting unattempted marks on a mock script is the quickest way to find out which kind of student you have, and it takes about a minute.

The habit has to be practised under timing to exist at all. A student who agrees with the arithmetic in a session and then writes without a clock in the examination will do exactly what they always did, because the behaviour is driven by anxiety rather than by ignorance. Two or three full papers sat under real timing, with the allowances written on the paper beforehand, is what converts the principle into something that holds when the room goes quiet.

Why this support is scarce locally, and what that means

  • The local market forms around maths and science because supply is easiest there
  • In essay subjects, the mark scheme is the difference between a 5 and a 7
  • Ask when a prospective tutor last marked against the official scheme
  • Removing travel widens the pool enough to find someone who can answer

The local tutoring market in this cluster forms around maths and the sciences for sound reasons. Those subjects have abundant resources, a clear diagnosis from a script, and the largest number of available teachers. English, Economics, Business Studies, History and Geography have fewer tutors, and a greater proportion of those who do advertise are generalists who teach content confidently and have not recently read the relevant mark scheme.

That matters because in these subjects the mark scheme is the entire difference between a 5 and a 7. A tutor who has not read it will discuss the topic knowledgeably, the student will enjoy the sessions, the content knowledge will improve and the grade will hold. Families then conclude the child has reached their ceiling in a subject where the ceiling was never the problem. The question to ask any prospective tutor in these subjects is simple: when did you last mark an answer in this subject against the official scheme?

Removing travel from the arrangement widens the pool enough to find someone who can answer that question. That is the practical argument for the format in this part of the timetable, and it is stronger here than in maths or science where a local specialist can usually be found. IB Gram provides no home visits anywhere in the UAE, so the comparison is between our online sessions and a local market that, for these subjects specifically, is thin in exactly the way that matters.

08

Booking support for a full subject basket

  • Send the whole timetable with the board and code for each subject
  • Three scripts read together often reveal one habit, not three problems
  • Free trial producing a written breakdown by subject and habit
  • We name coverage gaps rather than substituting a generalist

Send the whole timetable rather than the one subject you are most worried about, with the board and syllabus code for each. Add the marked mock scripts if the school will release them, and the hours that genuinely exist after a bus that leaves before 07:00 and returns after 15:30. The full timetable matters because the same technique failure often appears in three subjects at once, and reading three scripts together turns three tutoring decisions into one block of work.

We match one tutor per subject and propose slots in Gulf Standard Time. One free trial lesson per student, no card required, producing a written breakdown of lost marks by subject and by habit. Most families start with the technique block when the scripts support it, because it produces gains across several subjects, and then add a single-subject slot where a genuine content gap remains.

The limits. Support in the less-tutored subjects takes longer to match than maths or science, and for a few subjects at particular hours there is nobody suitable in a given week. We will say so and offer alternatives rather than putting a generalist into a mark-scheme problem, which is the arrangement most likely to produce pleasant sessions and a static grade. We cannot promise a grade, and in these subjects the student has to write between sessions, because the marks are awarded for what is on the page.

Finally, a note about order. Where a school assessment is imminent in one subject, that subject takes the first slot regardless of where the biggest long-term gap sits, because a near date beats a large gap. After that assessment the plan reverts to the ranking. Saying this at the outset prevents the common pattern where a family keeps reshuffling the plan around whichever subject was most recently difficult.

Where we tutor

Dubai Harbour and the communities around it

Support for the less-tutored subjects is scarcer in every one of these communities, which is why the shortlist should not be filtered by distance. The timing differences, though, are real.

Dubai Harbour

Towers around the cruise terminal and marina berths, with no school or tuition centre inside the district. Essay-based subjects need a session long enough to write in, which from here means 17:30 or a weekend morning.

Emaar Beachfront

The adjoining peninsula on the same approach corridor with the same school-run pattern. Families here face the same scarcity in English and humanities support and usually arrive at the same conclusion about format.

Dubai Marina

Denser and tram-served with the largest local tutor pool, which is still concentrated almost entirely in maths and the sciences. English and Economics support is thin even at the centre of the cluster.

JBR

Long settled with a mature freelance market. Humanities support here tends to come from generalist tutors who teach content well and have not read a History or Economics mark scheme recently.

Al Sufouh and Al Barsha

Where most of this cluster's Year 11 teaching happens and where most tuition centres sit. Centre provision follows the same pattern: maths and science classes, with little for English or the humanities.

Jumeirah Park and The Greens

Communities with their own British-curriculum provision and a steadier commute. An earlier weekday slot is workable, which helps when an essay subject needs a longer session.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai Harbour

Al Sufouh, Al Barsha and Umm Suqeim

The main secondary destination from Dubai Harbour, dominated by British provision running IGCSE at 16. Subject baskets differ widely between these schools, and so do the boards chosen for individual subjects, which is why the code matters per subject rather than per school.

  • Dubai College
  • GEMS Wellington International School
  • Kings' School Dubai
  • Repton Al Barsha
  • Nord Anglia International School Dubai
  • American School of Dubai

Jumeirah Park, Al Safa and The Greens

The second commute direction from the Harbour approach. These schools differ most in their humanities and languages offer, which is the part of a timetable families here most often struggle to find support for.

  • Dubai British School Jumeirah Park
  • Safa British School
  • Regent International School
  • JESS Jumeirah
  • Horizon English School

Schools are named only to describe the subject and entry context around your child. IB Gram has no affiliation, partnership or endorsement arrangement with any of them.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the whole timetable, not one subject

Eight to ten subjects with board and syllabus code for each. The same technique failure frequently appears across English, Economics and a humanity, and reading the scripts together converts three separate tutoring decisions into one block of work that moves all three grades.

  2. 02

    Ask for the marked scripts

In essay and application subjects the script is the only document that shows whether marks went to content, to answer construction, or to unattempted questions at the end. Counting unattempted marks on the last page takes a minute and frequently identifies the largest single loss.

  3. 03

    Buy the technique block first

Command terms, using a source or a figure rather than describing it, naming a context, and reaching a judgement are rewarded identically across these subjects. Three or four sessions there usually outperform the same sessions spent inside any one subject.

  4. 04

    Write in every session

These subjects are marked on what reaches the page, so the session includes a timed answer that the student marks against the official scheme before the tutor audits the marking. Discussion alone improves understanding and leaves the grade where it was.

  5. 05

Check against the next school assessment

The measure is the mark on the school's next real piece in that subject, not a practice score. If the targeted habit has not moved it, the diagnosis or the practice format was wrong and the plan changes rather than continuing on hope.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Coverage where the local market thins

English, Economics, Business Studies, History, Geography, ICT and Computer Science are harder to find locally than maths and science, and they are frequently where the two or three weakest grades on a transcript sit.

Mark schemes, not topic revision

In these subjects the scheme is the difference between a 5 and a 7. Sessions work on the student's own written answers against the official scheme, which is the one thing a content-confident generalist will not do.

One block, several subjects

Command terms, source and data use, context naming and judgement sentences are rewarded identically across the essay and application subjects, so a single technique block produces gains in three or four grades at once.

The mandatory subjects explained properly

Dubai private schools must deliver Arabic, Islamic Education and social studies, with Arab and non-Arab streams taught separately and additional content prohibited without Ministry permission. We match to the stream your school placed the child in.

Timing taught as arithmetic

Minutes divided by marks, written on the paper before anything else. Unattempted marks on the last page are the largest recoverable loss in a humanities paper and the one nobody is explicitly taught to prevent.

Coursework support that keeps authorship

For ICT and Computer Science components we explain evidence requirements and review what the student has produced. We do not supply files, complete tasks or write documentation, because the component must be the student's own work.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai Harbour: your questions answered

Why is it hard to find English or Economics tutors near Dubai Harbour?+

Because the local market forms where supply is easiest, which is maths and the sciences. Those subjects have abundant resources, a clear diagnosis from a script and the largest pool of available teachers. English, Economics, Business Studies and the humanities have fewer tutors, and more of those who advertise are generalists who teach content well without having recently read the relevant mark scheme. Since our lessons run over live video and we provide no home visits in the UAE, distance stops limiting the shortlist.

My child reads constantly and still gets a 5 in English. What is happening?+

Almost certainly answer construction. On the reading paper students retell the passage when the question asked them to select from it, analyse it or infer from it, so correct content answers a question that was not asked. On directed writing the usual loss is register drift, where a letter becomes an essay twenty lines in. On composition it is shape rather than style. All three are mechanical, visible in a marked script, and improve within a month of writing and marking weekly.

What are application marks in Business Studies 0450?+

Marks awarded for reasoning that could only apply to the named organisation in the case material. A student who defines a term and gives a general advantage and disadvantage collects the knowledge mark and stops. The rule that fixes it is to name the firm in the first sentence of every paragraph and draw the reason from the case rather than from the textbook. Evaluation questions then need a judgement with a reason, written as a decision rather than as a balanced list.

Why do Economics diagrams lose marks when they are correct?+

Because the marks are for labelling and for the market in question, not for the shape. An unlabelled axis, an unmarked shift direction or a generic diagram where the question named a specific market all score below what the student knew, since the diagram is the first thing the examiner reads. Draw it and label it fully before writing any prose, then write one sentence saying what the diagram shows about that market. Four sessions enforcing that typically moves the grade.

What is the commonest mistake on IGCSE History source questions?+

Answering from the student's own knowledge instead of from the source. The question asks what a source suggests, how two sources differ or how useful a source is, so the answer must address the source's content, its provenance, or both. Knowledge-based answers are frequently correct and cannot be credited. Recognising which kind of source question is being asked takes about ten minutes to teach and pays for the remainder of the course, which makes it unusually good value.

How should Geography case studies be learned?+

As specific facts rather than as general understanding. The mark scheme rewards named places, particular figures and dates, so a student who writes generically about coastal erosion or urban growth collects the general marks and misses the specific ones. One case-study card per topic with five concrete facts on it, learned as facts, is the practical method. Skills questions on maps, graphs and photographs score fastest of anything in the subject and are practised least.

Are ICT practical marks about coding ability?+

Barely. They are about documentation: the right screenshots, correct filenames, and evidence presented in the order the tasks were set. A student who completes every task competently and submits the evidence out of order loses marks unrelated to their ability. A checklist drawn up once before the component prevents nearly all of it. A tutor can explain the requirements and review what the student produced, and may not supply files or complete any part of the task.

What single change helps most in Computer Science 0478?+

Using trace tables. Students write algorithmic logic that works and omit the trace table and the variable declarations, losing method marks the logic had already earned. Trace tables are avoided because they are tedious rather than difficult, and they carry real marks on most algorithm questions. Alongside that, consistent pseudocode structure with declared variables is worth more than additional content revision for most students at this level.

Does my non-Arab child have to study Arabic in a Dubai school?+

Yes. Dubai private schools must deliver Arabic language, Islamic Education and social and moral studies regardless of the international curriculum they are licensed to teach. KHDA requires Arab and non-Arab streams to be taught separately because the curriculum expectations and language of instruction differ, with non-Arab students taught the moral, social and cultural studies strand in the school's licensed-curriculum language. Note that Arabic and Islamic education do not count towards the five subjects Ministry equivalency requires.

Can you use your own Arabic materials for these lessons?+

No, and nor should anyone. For the mandatory UAE subjects, the use of any different or additional content without prior permission from the Ministry is prohibited, so support has to work with the school's own material rather than substituting a parallel syllabus. Tell us which stream the school has placed your child in, because the material is not interchangeable between the Arab and non-Arab streams and matching it wrongly wastes the sessions entirely.

How much of a humanities grade is lost to timing?+

More than most families expect, and it is measurable in a minute: count the unattempted marks on the last page of a mock script. A student who writes a thorough answer to a four-mark question and then has nine minutes for a twelve-mark question has lost marks through allocation rather than ignorance. Dividing minutes by marks before writing anything, and writing the allowance on the paper, is the single largest recoverable loss in an essay paper.

Should we buy support for one subject or several?+

Send all of them and let the scripts decide. The same technique failure often appears across English, Economics and a humanity, in which case a single technique block on command terms, source use, context naming and judgement sentences moves three or four grades for the cost of one subject's sessions. Where a genuine content gap remains in one subject afterwards, add a single-subject slot then. Buying three subjects in week one usually buys the same block three times.

Is English Literature worth tutoring if my child likes the texts?+

Often yes, because enjoyment and marks diverge in this subject. Set-text responses reward close reference, and a student who knows the text thoroughly and quotes nothing specific scores in the middle bands. The repair is mechanical: one embedded quotation per paragraph, used in the argument rather than displayed before it. A few sessions on quotation selection and paragraph purpose typically move the grade more than further reading of the text does.

What should the first session in an essay subject look like?+

The student writing. A timed answer produced in the session, marked by the student against the official scheme, then audited by the tutor. That produces an immediate diagnosis of whether the marks are going to content, command terms, application, judgement or timing, and it sets the pattern for every session afterwards. A first session spent discussing the subject is pleasant and tells you very little, because these subjects are marked on what reaches the page.

Send the whole timetable, with the codes

The grades holding a Year 11 transcript down in this district are frequently not in maths or science. Send the full subject list with the board and syllabus code for each, the marked mock scripts if the school will release them, and the hours that genuinely exist after the run back to Dubai Harbour. We will read the scripts together, propose a technique block where one habit is failing across subjects, and match single-subject tutors where a real content gap remains. One free trial lesson per student, no card required.
