Edexcel IGCSE English Language A 4EA1 Tutor in Dubai

An Edexcel IGCSE English Language A 4EA1 tutor in Dubai is usually quoted in the same AED bands as a maths or science tutor, which is the first thing that should make a parent ask a question. English is the one subject where the work happens between the lessons, in the marking, and a rate that excludes it is a rate for half the job. This page prices the whole job and names who published each figure. Lessons run one-to-one over live video.

  • Every AED band here is attributed to the provider that published it
  • Marking turnaround is quoted as part of the plan, not as an extra
  • Written feedback against the published criteria after every timed task
  • Live video in Gulf Standard Time, with no travel inside the rate

What you are actually paying for when you buy 4EA1 tuition in Dubai

English Language A carries the Pearson code 4EA1 and is assessed in two components. Paper 1 covers non-fiction texts and transactional writing and carries the larger share of the qualification at sixty per cent over two hours and fifteen minutes. Paper 2 covers poetry and prose texts and imaginative writing at forty per cent over an hour and a half, and Pearson offers a coursework route in place of that second paper. Which route your child sits is a decision the school made, not one you can choose late, so confirm it on the Pearson subject page before planning anything.

That structure is why English tuition is priced badly in this market. In maths and science, the lesson is the product: a tutor explains a method, the student practises, the mark moves. In English, the lesson is the smaller half. The product is a piece of writing produced to time, read closely by someone who knows the criteria, annotated line by line, and returned with one specific instruction for the next attempt. That reading and annotating takes thirty to fifty minutes for a single Paper 1 Section B response, and somebody is either paying for it or not getting it.

Published Dubai rates do not distinguish between the two. Unitors lists International GCSE tuition from AED 150 an hour. TutorChase quotes AED 270. BartyED quotes AED 650 at the named tier. EdFlik advertises from AED 45 to AED 65 and Tutopiya from AED 33 to AED 52. Bestimate's Dubai rate table puts specialist exam-year support at AED 200 to AED 450 and above. Those are their figures. None of them tells you whether a marked essay is included, and that single omission is the difference between a useful purchase and an expensive conversation.

The second reason English quotes are hard to compare is that the subject contains two different jobs. Reading questions on Paper 1 Section A test retrieval, inference and analysis of a writer's method, and they respond to technique: a student can be taught to quote short, comment on effect and answer the question asked. Writing tasks test something slower. Sentence variety, control of register, structural shape and accuracy improve over months, not weeks, and a plan that prices them as a six-week fix is mispricing them.

There is a third cost most families never see, and it is specific to Dubai. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies are mandatory in every Dubai private school whatever the licensed international curriculum, and KHDA calculates their instructional time in forty-minute lesson units with separate classes required for Arab and non-Arab students. Those hours are already in your child's week. Any English plan has to fit the time that remains, and a plan that assumes an empty weekday evening is a plan that will be abandoned by October.

IB Gram delivers 4EA1 support as one-to-one online tuition over live video in Gulf Standard Time. Home visits are a service offered only in India and are not sold in the UAE. What follows prices the real job: the component structure you are preparing for, the market bands by provider model, what twenty hours typically buys at different starting grades, the coursework question and its honesty boundary, and the four questions that make two English quotes comparable.

At a glance

  • 4EA1 has two components; the second has a coursework alternative set by the school
  • Paper 1 carries sixty per cent; Paper 2 or the coursework route carries forty
  • Published Dubai bands: AED 33 to AED 650 an hour depending on tier and format
  • Marking a single timed writing task takes a reader thirty to fifty minutes
  • Reading marks respond to technique; writing marks move over months
  • KHDA mandatory Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies already occupy weekly hours

4EA1 spending behaves differently at four points in a student's school career, and the same hourly rate buys a different thing at each one. Identify the point before agreeing a plan, because the most expensive mistake available here is buying exam-technique hours for a student who needs eighteen months of writing practice.

KS3ENGAges 11-14 · Years 7-9

Lower secondary English before 4EA1

The cheapest hours in the whole sequence, and the ones that actually determine the 4EA1 grade. Sentence control, paragraph shape, punctuation accuracy and reading stamina are built here or not at all. A student who arrives in Year 10 writing in two sentence types will meet that limitation again as a Paper 1 Section B mark, and by then it costs five times as much to address.

Dubai's international cohort means a significant share of students meet formal English writing instruction in different sequences across different systems before Year 9. A student who transferred at Year 7 or 8 may have strong reading and untaught writing conventions, which a report rarely separates.

4EA1Y10Ages 14-15 · Year 10

Year 10 of English Language A

The year where tuition money produces the most grade movement per dirham, because writing improvement is slow and Year 10 is the only year with enough runway for it. Work here is volume plus feedback: regular timed pieces, marked properly, with one instruction carried into the next attempt. Nothing about this is dramatic and it is why Year 11 goes better.

Dubai schools often set the first full 4EA1-style assessment in the spring of Year 10. That marked paper, with its criteria grid, is the single document that makes an English tuition conversation useful rather than speculative.

4EA1Y11Ages 15-16 · Year 11

Year 11 and the exam series

Reading technique, timing and question-reading dominate, because they move inside weeks and writing craft does not. A sensible Year 11 plan takes the available writing level as given, protects it against accuracy slippage under time pressure, and spends most of its hours on the reading section and on the structure of responses, which is where recoverable marks sit.

The Dubai spring term compresses mocks, internal deadlines and the entry window, often with Ramadan inside it. Reading-technique work survives a compressed term far better than a writing-development programme does, which is why the sequencing across the two years matters.

COURSEWORKSet by the school, usually Year 10-11

The coursework route in place of Paper 2

Where the school has entered the coursework option instead of the second written paper, the shape of the support changes and so does its honesty boundary. A tutor teaches the skills, questions the thinking and gives feedback on what the student has already produced. A tutor does not supply sentences, structure or content for a folder that will be submitted under the student's name.

Because the option is a school-level entry decision in Dubai as everywhere else, the first thing to establish is which route your child is on. Families sometimes buy a term of Paper 2 preparation for a student whose school entered coursework, which is money spent on the wrong component entirely.

After 4EA1: A Level, IB and university entry

The 4EA1 grade is a gatekeeper rather than a destination. It appears in sixth-form entry requirements, in the five-subject count for UAE Ministry of Education equivalency on the British track, and in university English-proficiency decisions. Knowing which of those three uses applies to your child changes the target grade and therefore the budget.

The published MoE requirement for the British track is five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that count. Verify your child's own case on moe.gov.ae; equivalency is not something a tutoring service performs or influences.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The list below separates the parts of 4EA1 that respond quickly to paid hours from the parts that do not. That separation is the whole of the cost argument on this page, because buying the slow work in a short window is the commonest way to spend money on English without moving a grade.

Paper 1 Section A: non-fiction reading

International GCSE

The fastest-moving marks in the qualification. Retrieval, inference and analysis of a writer's method are teachable techniques: quote short, comment on effect, answer the question actually asked. A student stuck at a 5 here is usually paraphrasing rather than analysing, which is correctable within a block of six.

Paper 1 Section B: transactional writing

International GCSE

Letters, articles, reports, speeches and reviews assessed on form, audience, register and accuracy. The fastest gains come from form conventions and planning discipline rather than from style. The slow part is sentence variety and control, which improves across terms rather than across sessions.

Paper 2: poetry and prose texts

International GCSE

Anthology-based close reading where marks turn on linking a specific textual choice to a specific effect. Over-prepared students arrive with memorised content and lose marks for not answering the question in front of them. Technique work rather than more reading is usually what is needed.

Paper 2: imaginative writing

International GCSE

Narrative and descriptive writing marked on structure and control, not on inventiveness. Students lose marks to runaway plots and to opening paragraphs that spend three hundred words arriving. A planning routine and a hard word budget per section are the two highest-return interventions.

The coursework alternative to Paper 2

Where the school has entered it

Two assessed pieces in place of the second written paper, produced under school conditions. Tuition here is skills teaching and feedback on work the student has already produced, never provision of material for submission. Establish which route the school entered before buying any preparation.

Accuracy: punctuation, agreement and tense

Across both components

The cheapest marks nobody buys. Comma splices, subject-verb agreement and tense drift are rule-based errors that persist because they are never systematically diagnosed. A list drawn from the student's own marked pieces, drilled for three weeks, holds under exam pressure.

Timing and pacing across the papers

Across both components

Paper 1 runs over two hours with reading and writing to balance, and students routinely over-invest in Section A and arrive at the writing task with twenty minutes. A timing plan tested on full papers is worth more marks than another term of content and costs a fraction of it.

English Language B (4EB1) as an alternative route

International GCSE

A different qualification for students working in English as an additional language. A student placed in 4EA1 who should be on 4EB1 will absorb tuition hours indefinitely without the grade moving, so the entry question is worth settling before the budget is committed.

English Literature alongside 4EA1

International GCSE

Frequently taken together, and the overlap is real: close reading and essay structure transfer in both directions. One tutor across both is usually better value than two bookings, provided the literature texts are named before the plan is agreed.

Arabic as a first or additional language

KHDA mandatory subject

Runs alongside the Pearson curriculum under KHDA requirements, with separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students and specified languages of instruction. Its weekly hours are part of the time budget an English plan must fit inside, which is a scheduling cost rather than a fee.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways to buy 4EA1 support, with the cost logic of each. The differences are not about intensity; they are about where the marking sits and who reads the writing.

Weekly session plus a marked piece

The standard shape and the one that produces writing improvement. One session a week, one timed piece between sessions, marked against the published criteria and returned with a single instruction for the next attempt. The marking is the expensive component and it is the component that makes the session worth attending, so establish how it is priced before anything else.

  • One timed piece between every pair of sessions
  • Written annotation against the criteria, returned before the next session
  • One instruction carried forward, not a list of twelve
  • Best started in Year 10, where there is runway for slow gains

Reading-technique block

Six sessions on Paper 1 Section A and the Paper 2 close reading: question reading, short quotation, comment on method and effect, and allocating time by mark value. It is the fastest-moving work in the subject and the right purchase for a Year 11 student whose writing level is what it is and whose reading marks are recoverable.

  • Defined scope, defined session count, defined cost
  • Built on past-paper reading sections under time
  • Ends with a full timed Section A and a mark comparison
  • Suits a compressed Year 11 term better than writing development

Accuracy and timing clinic

A short, unglamorous programme that fixes rule-based errors and pacing. The error list is built from the student's own marked work, drilled until it holds under time pressure, and tested on a full paper. It is the cheapest intervention available in 4EA1 and the one almost no family buys, because it does not sound like teaching.

  • Error list drawn from the student's own scripts, not a textbook
  • Three weeks of short drills rather than long explanations
  • A timing plan tested on a complete paper
  • Checked by whether the errors stay fixed under exam conditions

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

Why an English hourly rate tells you less than a maths one

Hourly rates in Dubai are quoted the same way across every subject, which quietly misrepresents English. A maths hour is largely self-contained: the tutor diagnoses, teaches a method, sets practice, and the practice can be checked quickly. An English hour is the visible part of a cycle whose expensive part happens afterwards, when somebody reads a timed response closely enough to say which sentence lost the mark and why.

That reading is not quick. A single Paper 1 Section B response takes a competent marker thirty to fifty minutes to annotate properly against the criteria: identifying where form conventions slipped, where register drifted, which sentence patterns repeat, which errors are systematic rather than careless, and then choosing the one instruction most likely to move the next attempt. Multiply by a weekly cycle across a school year and the marking is comparable in volume to the contact time.

So a quoted rate is answering a question you have not asked. The useful question is what the total package includes, and the table below sets out the three versions of English tuition that hide behind a single hourly number. The middle column is where most of the market sits and where most of the disappointment originates: a lesson that discusses writing in general without ever reading a piece the student produced to time.

This is also why the cheapest tiers behave differently in English than in science. At AED 33 to AED 65 an hour, published by Tutopiya and EdFlik, a student can get genuinely useful homework supervision and content recall in a science subject. In English, the same rate buys conversation about writing, because nobody can afford to spend forty minutes marking an essay at that price. That is arithmetic, not a judgement about the tutors.

The 4EA1 components you are buying preparation for

Before any rate is agreed, establish which components your child is actually sitting. Pearson's specification for English Language A sets out Paper 1, non-fiction texts and transactional writing, at two hours and fifteen minutes and sixty per cent of the qualification, and Paper 2, poetry and prose texts and imaginative writing, at an hour and a half and forty per cent, with a coursework route available in place of that second paper. Read the current subject page on the Pearson site and confirm your child's option with the school.

That sixty-forty split has a direct budget consequence. Paper 1 carries more marks and contains the fastest-moving component in the subject, the non-fiction reading section. If hours are limited, they belong there. A plan that divides time evenly across the two papers is spending the same money for less movement, and a plan that leads with Paper 2 anthology coverage is usually responding to what feels unprepared rather than to where the marks are.

The coursework question matters more than its share of the qualification suggests. Families occasionally buy a term of Paper 2 preparation for a student whose school entered coursework, or the reverse. One email to the English department settles it. It also settles the honesty question, because support for a submitted folder has a boundary that support for a sat paper does not, and that boundary should be stated before the first session rather than discovered mid-term.

The table below sets out the components, their weighting, and what each one costs in preparation terms. Note the fourth column: three of the five lines move within a block of six sessions and two do not. Knowing which is which before you commit is the difference between buying a result and buying hope.

What the Dubai market charges for English tuition, by provider model

The useful comparison is not between named companies but between business models, because the model predicts what you get for the money better than the brand does. The table below compares models and quotes only published figures, each attributable to the provider that published it. IB Gram does not appear with a rate because no rate is published on these pages; our pricing follows a diagnostic and a written plan.

Read the marking column first. It is the one that separates two otherwise identical AED 200 hours, and it is almost never on a provider's website. Ask it directly and listen for whether the answer contains a turnaround time. Within two working days, annotated against the criteria, is an operational commitment. We give detailed feedback is a sentence.

The in-home line deserves a straight explanation rather than a dismissal. Bestimate's Dubai table puts in-home one-to-one at AED 180 to AED 350, independent home tutors up to AED 500, and monthly in-home packages at AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 for four two-hour sessions. Part of that premium is the drive, and in English a two-hour in-home block can genuinely suit a student who writes better with someone sitting beside them. IB Gram does not sell home visits anywhere in the UAE; that service exists only in India.

What an online model changes for English specifically is less about price than about the reading. Annotation on a shared screen is saved, revisited and compared with the previous piece, which is how a student sees that the same comma splice has appeared four weeks running. A paper script annotated in a living room and put in a bag does not produce that comparison, which is the mechanism by which writing actually improves.

What twenty hours of 4EA1 support actually buys

Twenty hours is roughly a term of weekly sessions, and it is the unit most families end up buying whether or not they plan it that way. What it delivers depends almost entirely on the starting point and on which component the hours are spent in. The table below is built from the mechanics of the qualification rather than from any claim about outcomes, and it deliberately contains no promised grades, because nobody can honestly promise one.

The pattern is consistent. Students losing marks to technique, question reading, form conventions and accuracy get a lot from twenty hours, because those are rule-based gains that hold under pressure. Students whose underlying writing level is the ceiling get less, because sentence control and structural range are built over terms. That is not a reason to skip the hours; it is a reason to buy them in Year 10 rather than in the March of Year 11.

The third row is the one worth reading twice. A student on a secure 6 who wants a 7 is usually not short of content or technique; they are short of the specific analytical precision and sentence variety that separate the top bands, and that is the slowest gain in the subject. Families who buy twenty hours expecting that movement in a term are frequently disappointed by a tutor who did nothing wrong.

What should accompany any twenty-hour plan is a mid-point review on evidence. After eight to ten sessions, the student sits a full timed paper, it is marked, and the mark is compared with the baseline from the diagnostic. If the categories that were supposed to move have not moved, the plan changes rather than continuing. Ten hours spent in the wrong component is the single most common waste in English tuition, and a mid-point review is what catches it.

05

Language A or Language B: the entry question that decides the bill

  • The 4EA1 and 4EB1 entry is a school decision, not a parental preference
  • A strong reading mark with a weak writing mark is a signal worth discussing
  • Criteria comments about range and idiom are evidence, not opinion
  • Settle the entry before committing a term of tuition to either route

A share of the money spent on English tuition in Dubai is spent on the wrong qualification. English Language A and English Language B are different Pearson International GCSE qualifications aimed at different students, and a child entered for 4EA1 who would be better served by 4EB1 can absorb tuition hours for a year without the grade responding. This is worth resolving before the budget is committed, and it costs one conversation with the English department.

The signal is not nationality or home language. It is whether the student is operating in English as a first language in an academic register, or working in English as an additional language with a developing vocabulary range. A student in the second category sitting a first-language paper is being assessed against criteria written for the first category, and tuition cannot change that framing. It can only help them cope with it.

Where the school has entered 4EA1 and that is settled, the practical consequence for spending is a different allocation of hours. Vocabulary range and idiomatic control become the long slow project, and the recoverable marks sit in the reading section, in form conventions and in accuracy. A plan that spends twenty hours trying to raise register in a term is spending in the wrong place, however well it is taught.

Where the school is open to a conversation about the entry, the evidence to bring is the marked work rather than an opinion. Comments on a criteria grid referring repeatedly to vocabulary range, expression and idiom tell a story. So does a strong reading mark alongside a weak writing mark. The decision belongs to the school, and the reason to raise it early is that it determines what the tuition is for and therefore what it should cost.

06

The coursework route and the line a tutor does not cross

  • Feedback follows the student's own attempt; nothing is supplied for submission
  • State the expectation in the first conversation and listen to the answer
  • Pearson papers and mark schemes are linked, not distributed
  • No regulator or board endorses IB Gram, and no page here implies one does

Where a school has entered the coursework option in place of Paper 2, forty per cent of the qualification rests on pieces the student produces themselves. That changes what tuition can legitimately be. A tutor teaches the skill, questions the thinking, reads what the student has already written and gives feedback on it. A tutor does not supply sentences, paragraphs, structures or content for a folder submitted under the student's name.

The distinction is about sequence, and it is easy to apply. Feedback on an attempt the student made is teaching. A model handed over before the student attempts anything, for a piece that will be submitted, is not teaching, and the exposure falls on the student rather than on the provider. Any family paying for coursework-route support should state this expectation out loud in the first conversation and notice how it is received.

This matters commercially as well as ethically, because the UAE market contains providers selling completed assessed work. Research into this sector found one operator advertising finished Internal Assessments for international qualifications at a fixed price. Whatever the qualification, buying submitted work exposes the student to a malpractice finding, and no grade is worth that. It is also a reason to be cautious about everything else such a provider says about its prices and its people.

The second boundary is material. Pearson specifications, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables belong to Pearson. A tutoring service references and links them; it does not reproduce or distribute them as downloads, and a provider offering a bundle of papers as a selling point is offering something it is not entitled to supply. IB Gram holds no accreditation, licence or partnership from Pearson, Edexcel, KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, MoHRE or the Ministry of Education.

07

Where 4EA1 money gets wasted, and the four questions that prevent it

  • What is included beyond the hour, and what is the marking turnaround?
  • Which component do the first six sessions target, and on what evidence?
  • What gets reviewed after eight sessions, and against what baseline?
  • What free support does the school already provide this term?

Four waste patterns account for most of the money spent on English tuition in Dubai without a grade moving, and all four are avoidable before the first invoice. None of them involves a bad tutor. They involve buying a reasonable product for the wrong problem, at the wrong time, in the wrong component.

The first is buying lessons without marking, which is paying for the cheap half of the cycle. The second is buying writing development in the spring of Year 11, when there is no runway for a slow gain and the recoverable marks are in reading, timing and accuracy. The third is spending hours on the component that feels unprepared rather than the one carrying the marks, which usually means Paper 2 anthology coverage while Paper 1 Section A sits at a 5. The fourth is never checking at the mid-point whether anything has changed.

Against those four, four questions. What is included beyond the hour, and what is the marking turnaround? Which component will the first six sessions target, and what evidence says so? What will we look at after eight sessions to decide whether to continue? And what happens if the honest answer turns out to be that the school's own English clinic, or an entry-level conversation about 4EA1 against 4EB1, is the better first step?

A provider who can answer the fourth question without flinching is the one to book. The answer involves sending you somewhere else for part of the work, and that is a signal about everything else they will tell you. Departmental clinics, revision sessions and past-paper practice are inside the school fees you already pay, and a plan that ignores them is overcharging you by omission.

08

Timing the spend: why Year 10 hours cost less per mark

  • Slow gains in Year 10, fast gains in Year 11: that is the spending order
  • Twenty hours early changes what a student can write; twenty hours late organises it
  • Reading and accuracy work survives a compressed Dubai spring term; writing development does not
  • A held weekly slot over video survives travel, holidays and a Ramadan timetable shift

English is the clearest case in the Pearson suite for spending early, and the reason is mechanical rather than motivational. Writing improves through volume plus feedback over months. Reading technique improves through targeted practice over weeks. A two-year course therefore has a natural spending order: the slow work goes in Year 10, where there is runway, and the fast work goes in Year 11, where there is not.

Families overwhelmingly do the opposite, because Year 10 feels early and a Year 11 mock result feels urgent. The consequence is that the same budget buys less. Twenty hours spent in Year 10 on timed writing with proper marking changes what the student can produce. The same twenty hours in March of Year 11 can only organise what they already produce, which is worth real marks but fewer of them.

There is a Dubai-specific layer to this. The spring term compresses mocks, internal deadlines and the exam entry window, and Ramadan frequently sits inside that compression with shortened school days and a different evening rhythm. A writing-development programme does not survive that term intact. A reading-technique block and an accuracy clinic do, because they are short, structured and tolerant of a disrupted week.

The practical scheduling conclusion is to hold one fixed weekly slot from early in Year 10 and keep it, rather than buying an intensive later. Because delivery here is one-to-one over live video, that slot survives family travel, school holidays and a Ramadan timetable shift with a calendar edit rather than a renegotiation, and continuity is the variable that writing improvement is most sensitive to.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Dubai

Where you live in Dubai changes the time available for English work far more than it changes the price of it. Writing improvement needs a weekly slot that survives the term, and these notes are about where that slot realistically sits.

Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim

Established catchment with strong demand for English support in the exam year, which means the better-known tutors commit early. Families here benefit most from securing a fixed weekly slot in September rather than negotiating one in February.

Dubai Marina and Jumeirah Beach Residence

Apartment households where a quiet hour is the scarce resource, not transport. Shorter, more frequent sessions with written feedback the student reads alone work better here than long blocks in a busy living room.

Arabian Ranches and Arabian Ranches 2

Long bus runs push sessions past 16:30. Writing work needs a fresh brain, so families here often move the timed-writing session to a weekend morning and keep the weekday slot for reading technique and feedback review.

Dubai Hills Estate

Short commutes mean a genuine 16:00 start, which is the single biggest practical advantage for an English plan. A full timed Paper 1 can be sat on a weekday here, which elsewhere in the city is a weekend-only proposition.

Mirdif and Uptown Mirdif

Large Year 11 cohorts in the nearby British-curriculum schools, with internal mock windows clustered tightly. Plans here are built backwards from a known school mock date so that marked feedback lands before it, not after.

Jumeirah Village Circle and Al Furjan

Students travelling out to schools in Barsha and Dubai Hills, home late. The practical answer is screen-shared annotation the student can re-read at their own pace, which replaces the explanation they are too tired to absorb live.

Business Bay and Downtown Dubai

High-rise living with mixed school catchments across the city. Scheduling is the constraint rather than specialism, so a held recurring slot matters more here than a particular tutor's postcode ever could.

Mudon, Town Square and outer Dubailand

Longer runs in both directions and newer schools with growing Year 11 cohorts. Saturday morning is the slot that survives the year, and a fixed one through Year 10 is what makes Year 11 manageable.

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Jumeirah, Al Barsha and Dubai Hills

British-curriculum secondaries across this belt enter Pearson and Cambridge English qualifications side by side, and sometimes different options within one department. Students we support here most often arrive with a marked Section B response and a criteria grid they cannot interpret.

Mirdif, Arabian Ranches and eastern Dubai

Schools in this area run large English cohorts with a mix of first-language and additional-language students in the same classes, which is precisely why the 4EA1 against 4EB1 entry question comes up here as often as it does.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send one marked piece of writing and the criteria grid

A marked transactional or imaginative piece with the teacher's annotations and the criteria grid tells a tutor where the marks went. A reported grade does not. If the school publishes component marks, send those too, because the Paper 1 and Paper 2 split determines where the first hours belong.

  2. 02

Free trial used as a diagnostic

The student completes a short timed task and a reading section during the trial, and both are read properly afterwards. You receive a written baseline naming the loss categories in order of size, with an estimate of which move in weeks and which move across terms.

  3. 03

A written plan with the component named

The plan states which component the first six sessions target, what each session covers, what the marking turnaround is and what the total comes to. Where the honest finding is that the school's own clinic or an entry conversation comes first, the plan says that instead.

  4. 04

Weekly session built on the previous marked piece

Each session starts from the annotated work returned since the last one, carries one instruction forward and ends with the next timed task set. Slots run in Gulf Standard Time around the Dubai school day, and continuity through holidays is part of the design.

  5. 05

A mid-point review against the baseline

After eight to ten sessions the student sits a full timed paper, it is marked against the published criteria and the result is compared with the diagnostic baseline. If the categories that should have moved have not, the plan changes rather than continues.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Marking is quoted, not implied

The turnaround and the form of the returned work are stated in the plan before anything is booked. In English the marking is the expensive half of the cycle, and a provider who will not quote it is quoting for the cheap half.

Hours go where the marks are

Paper 1 carries sixty per cent of the qualification and contains the fastest-moving component in the subject. Plans lead there unless the diagnostic says otherwise, rather than dividing time evenly to look thorough.

Every AED figure is attributed

The bands on this page are published by the companies and rate tables named beside them, not by us. A parent can check the originals. No figure here is presented as an IB Gram price, because we quote after a diagnostic.

An honest line on writing timescales

Sentence control and analytical precision improve across terms, not inside a six-week block. The plan says so in week one and allocates the hours accordingly, which is why early Year 10 bookings get more for the same money.

The student's writing stays the student's

Tutors teach, question, mark and give feedback on work the student produced. Nothing is supplied for submission under a student's name, and no Pearson papers or mark schemes are distributed as downloads.

Free school support named first

English clinics, revision sessions and past-paper practice are already inside the fees you pay. The first conversation asks what the school provides this term, because a plan that ignores it is charging you for something you have.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

How much does Edexcel IGCSE English Language A 4EA1 tutoring cost in Dubai?+

Published Dubai rates for International GCSE tuition run from about AED 33 an hour at the budget-platform end to AED 650 at the named tier. Tutopiya lists AED 33 to AED 52, EdFlik AED 45 to AED 65, Unitors from AED 150, TutorChase around AED 270 and BartyED AED 650. Bestimate's rate table puts specialist exam-year support at AED 200 to AED 450 and above. For English the number alone is incomplete: ask whether criteria-referenced marking of timed writing is included and what the turnaround is, because that is the half of the cycle the rate usually hides.

Why is English tuition quoted differently from maths or science tuition?+

It usually is not quoted differently, and that is the problem. A maths hour is largely self-contained. An English hour is the visible part of a cycle whose expensive part is the marking: reading a timed response closely enough to identify which sentence lost the mark takes a competent marker thirty to fifty minutes. Across a school year that reading is comparable in volume to the contact time. A rate that excludes it is a rate for the cheaper half, which is why two AED 200 hours from different providers can be very different purchases.

Should criteria-referenced marking be included in the hourly rate?+

It should be included in the plan, whether it sits inside the hourly rate or alongside it. What matters is that somebody reads the student's own timed writing against the published criteria and returns annotation the student can use, within a stated number of working days. Ask for the turnaround as a number. An operational commitment sounds like annotated against the criteria within two working days. A sentence about detailed feedback is not a commitment, and in English it is the difference between a plan that moves a grade and one that discusses moving it.

Do English tutors in Dubai charge more than science tutors?+

Not materially, on published rates: the same AED bands appear across subjects, from Tutopiya's AED 33 to AED 52 up to BartyED's AED 650. The real difference is in what the rate covers. In a science subject at the budget tier a student can get useful homework supervision and content recall. In English the same rate cannot cover forty minutes of essay marking, so what is bought is conversation about writing rather than feedback on it. That is arithmetic rather than a comment on the tutors involved.

What does the 4EA1 coursework route change about the cost?+

Less than it changes the shape. Where a school has entered the coursework option in place of the second written paper, forty per cent of the qualification rests on pieces the student produces under school conditions, and support has a firm boundary: skills teaching and feedback on work already written, never material supplied for submission. The cost consequence is that the work is driven by the school's internal deadlines rather than by the exam series. Establish which route your child is on before buying any preparation, because families do buy the wrong one.

My child speaks English as an additional language. Is 4EA1 the right paper?+

It may not be, and this is worth settling before committing a budget. English Language A and English Language B are different Pearson qualifications for different students, and a child entered for the first-language paper who would be better served by 4EB1 can absorb a year of tuition without the grade responding. The entry is the school's decision. Bring evidence rather than opinion: a strong reading mark alongside a weak writing mark, and criteria comments returning repeatedly to vocabulary range, expression and idiom, are the signals to discuss with the department.

How many hours does it take to move a 4EA1 grade 5 to a 7?+

No honest answer exists without seeing a marked piece, and any provider who gives one before that is guessing. What can be said is where the hours go. A student at 5 because they paraphrase rather than analyse in the reading section has recoverable marks within a block of six. A student at 5 because sentence control and range are the ceiling is on a project measured in terms, not weeks. Those two students have the same reported grade and very different budgets, which is why the diagnostic comes before the quote.

Is a group English class worth the saving for 4EA1?+

For some things, yes. Group teaching delivers form conventions, exam structure and the mechanics of each component efficiently, and a student who can ask questions in a room gets real value from it. What a group cannot do is read your child's individual writing against the criteria and name the specific sentence patterns costing marks, because that is individual work by definition. A sensible hybrid is group work on structure and conventions plus a short one-to-one block for marked writing, which keeps most of the saving.

Do we pay extra for having transactional writing tasks marked?+

That depends entirely on the provider and it is the question to ask first. Marking a Paper 1 Section B response properly against the criteria takes a reader thirty to fifty minutes, so it is a real cost that is either inside the rate, charged alongside it, or quietly not happening. None of the published Dubai rate ranges states which. Ask how many pieces a month are marked, what you receive, and within how many working days, and compare two quotes on those three answers rather than on the hourly figure.

What is the cheapest useful thing we can do before paying anyone for 4EA1?+

Three things, all free. Ask the English department which components your child is entered for, including whether the coursework route applies, because families do buy preparation for the wrong one. Ask for the component-level marks rather than the reported grade, so you know whether Paper 1 or Paper 2 is the weakness. And ask what the department already provides: clinics, revision sessions and past-paper practice are inside fees you have paid. Those three answers often change the plan before a single hour is bought.

Does a 4EA1 grade count towards UAE Ministry of Education equivalency?+

The published requirement for the British track is five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade of no less than E or grade 3, together with one accredited subject at Advanced Level at grade E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level, and Arabic and Islamic education are not included among the five. How a specific certificate is counted is a decision for the Ministry and the attestation authority. Verify your child's own case on moe.gov.ae or with the school registrar. IB Gram does not perform or influence equivalency, and tutoring is not required for it.

Should we pay a tutor to cover the Paper 2 set texts?+

Only after checking where the marks are. Paper 1 carries sixty per cent of the qualification and contains the fastest-moving component in the subject, so hours spent on anthology coverage while the non-fiction reading section sits at a 5 are hours spent in the lower-yield place. Where the texts genuinely have not been covered, that is the school's teaching to establish rather than a tutor's to replace, and the right call is a conversation with the department first. Where they have been covered, the gain is in technique, not in more reading.

When in the two years is 4EA1 tuition best value?+

Year 10, clearly, and the reason is mechanical. Writing improves through volume plus feedback over months; reading technique improves over weeks. So the slow work belongs where there is runway and the fast work belongs in the exam year. Twenty hours in Year 10 changes what a student can produce. The same twenty hours in March of Year 11 can only organise what they already produce. The Dubai spring term, with mocks, entry deadlines and often Ramadan compressed together, makes that contrast sharper rather than softer.

What should a 4EA1 quote include before we compare it with another?+

Four things, all answerable in one call. What is included beyond the contact hour, and specifically the marking turnaround in working days. Which component the first six sessions will target, and what evidence supports that choice. What will be reviewed after eight sessions, against what baseline, to decide whether to continue. And what the provider will say if the honest finding is that the school's own support or an entry-level conversation should come first. Two quotes answered on those four points are genuinely comparable; two hourly rates are not.

Can one tutor cover 4EA1 and English Literature at the same time?+

Usually yes, and it is normally better value than two bookings. Close reading, quotation discipline and essay structure transfer directly between the two qualifications, so work done for one pays part of the bill for the other. The condition is that the literature texts are named before the plan is agreed, because text-specific preparation is not interchangeable. Where a student is weak in both, sequence matters: establish the reading technique once, then apply it in both subjects, rather than running two parallel programmes.

Price the whole cycle, not the hour

You now have the published Dubai bands with their sources, the component structure the hours are being spent on, what twenty hours tends to buy at different starting points, and the four questions that make two English quotes comparable. The next step costs nothing: send one marked piece of writing with its criteria grid, take the free trial as a diagnostic, and read the written baseline that comes back. It will name the loss categories in order of size and say which move in weeks and which move across terms. If the honest finding is that the school's own clinic or a conversation about the entry comes first, you will be told that. Sessions run one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time.
