Cambridge IGCSE Arabic First Language 0508 Home Tutor in Dubai

Families searching for a Cambridge IGCSE Arabic First Language 0508 home tutor in Dubai usually want one thing: to see that something is happening. A tutor in the room feels like evidence. It is not evidence. Marked scripts, a band explained, an error log that shrinks and a composition that holds its register for two pages are evidence, and all of those arrive by email whoever is in the room. Lessons run one-to-one over live video, on Gulf Standard Time.

  • A marked script after every written task, with the band explained in writing
  • An error log and register sheet the student keeps and the parent can read
  • A short note after each session: what was taught, what was set, what scored
  • A six-week review that either continues the plan or changes the diagnosis

What in-home tuition buys, and what evidence buys instead

The search for an Arabic home tutor in Dubai is rarely about convenience. It is about visibility. A parent who cannot read a British-curriculum school's Arabic feedback, or who reads Arabic fluently and finds the report says nothing, wants to see a person working with their child and conclude that effort is being made. That instinct is sound and the conclusion is unreliable. Presence in a room tells you a lesson happened. It does not tell you whether the summary question is still being answered from memory of the passage, or whether register drifts in the second paragraph of every composition.

The market for in-home Arabic tuition in Dubai is real and priced. Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 rate table puts in-home one-to-one at AED 180-350 an hour, with independent home tutors quoting AED 200-500 once travel is absorbed, and monthly in-home packages advertised at AED 1,599-1,799 for four two-hour visits. Those are market figures, not ours. IB Gram does not run home visits in Dubai or anywhere else in the UAE; home visits are a service we offer only in India, and every country page on this site says so.

What replaces the reassurance of presence is documentation, and on a language subject it is unusually checkable. A marked 0508 composition shows the band, the register slips, the accuracy errors and the structural move that was missing. A marked reading answer shows whether the student quoted from the text or paraphrased from memory. An error log shows the same four mistakes recurring in weeks one, three and five, and then not recurring in week seven. A parent who reads Arabic can audit all of it directly, which is more than most subjects allow.

The second thing online delivery buys for a 0508 family is the tutor itself. Dubai has no shortage of Arabic teachers. It has a genuine shortage of tutors who mark first-language Arabic writing against the Cambridge criteria and can say which band a piece sits in and why. Inside a twenty-minute drive of any given community, the overlap between those two groups may be nobody. On video it is whoever is free in that slot, anywhere, which is the practical argument rather than the convenience one.

A fair objection: a tutor in the room sees a disengaged fifteen-year-old faster. Our answer is the same documentation. A student who has stopped working shows up in the marked script inside a fortnight, and a six-week review exists to catch a plan that is not moving. If the evidence after six weeks shows nothing, the diagnosis was wrong and the plan changes. That is a more useful commitment than a promise about attendance, and it is the one thing a family can hold a provider to from outside the room.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

What usable evidence looks like changes with the stage a student is at. These are the four stages around 0508 and the proof worth asking for in each.

Y7-9Ages 11-14 · Years 7-9

Lower secondary Arabic, first-language stream

School-assessed years where the usable evidence is simply whether the student can read an unfamiliar formal passage at a sensible speed and write a paragraph that holds one register. Ask for a timed unseen reading task once a term; the result is more informative than any grade on a report.

In Dubai this is where the reading-speed gap opens between a student's English and their Arabic, because the weekly hours are not comparable. Caught in Year 8, it is a slow fix with time to run. Caught in Year 11, it is the one thing a tutor cannot compress.

0508Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE Arabic as a First Language (0508)

The examined course, and the stage where evidence becomes specific: a marked script with the band named, the four recurring accuracy errors listed, and the register slips circled. A grade on its own is not evidence. A grade with the two reasons for it written underneath is.

Dubai students in a British-curriculum school often sit in an Arabic first-language group of one class per year. Individual written feedback in that setting is thin by arithmetic rather than by neglect, which is precisely the gap a tutor's marked script fills.

RETAKEAny age · entered through a centre

Retake, with the previous script as the diagnosis

The strongest evidence a retake student can have is their own failed script, where available, because it names the loss instead of guessing at it. Where the script cannot be obtained, a full past paper sat under timed conditions in week one does the same job.

Cambridge runs June and November series, so a Dubai student can retake within months if the examination centre enters them in time. Ask the centre for its internal deadline, which sits earlier than Cambridge's, before building a retake plan around a series.

POST16Ages 16-19 · Years 12-13

Post-16 Arabic continuation

AS and A Level Arabic or IB Diploma Arabic A. The evidence that matters when choosing is a recent piece of analytical writing rather than the IGCSE grade, because both continuations demand sustained commentary that 0508 only partly tests.

Fewer Dubai centres offer A Level Arabic than offer 0508, and IB Diploma Arabic A adds oral assessment that 0508 does not examine. Check availability and assessment shape in Year 11, not in the summer afterwards.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the subjects whose marked work sits next to 0508 in a Dubai student's folder, and what each one's evidence tells you about the Arabic.

Arabic as a First Language (0508)

Cambridge IGCSE

The subject on this page. A single marked composition usually reveals the whole diagnosis: the band, four recurring accuracy errors, and the point in the second paragraph where formal register gave way to a spoken construction.

Arabic as a Foreign Language (0544)

Cambridge IGCSE

The learner syllabus. Worth knowing because a 0508 student whose marked reading work shows comprehension failures rather than technique failures may genuinely have been misplaced, and a marked piece settles that faster than a discussion.

Islamiyat (0493)

Cambridge IGCSE

Where a school offers it, the marked work shows whether a student can quote accurately and write formally under time. Both habits transfer directly into 0508, and weakness in one usually appears in the other.

Islamic Education

Mandatory school subject

Required in all Dubai private schools, with Standard Arabic as the main language of instruction for Arab students. Its exercise books are a free sample of your child's unassisted formal Arabic, which makes them useful diagnostic material.

UAE Social Studies and Moral Education

Mandatory school subject

Required alongside the licensed curriculum and taught primarily in Arabic for Arab students. Content may not be varied without prior Ministry of Education permission, so tutoring works with the prescribed material rather than around it.

First Language English (0500)

Cambridge IGCSE

The structural twin, and a useful control. A student whose English summary answers are strong and whose Arabic summary answers are weak has a technique transfer problem, not a comprehension problem, and that is a quick repair.

Literature in English (0475)

Cambridge IGCSE

Marked literature essays show whether a student quotes briefly and comments on effect or retells the plot. Whichever habit appears there tends to appear in Arabic language commentary too.

English as a Second Language (0510 and 0511)

Core and Extended

Many 0508 candidates sit ESL for English. The evidence point is workload: two language subjects with heavy written homework compete for the same evenings, and the plan has to acknowledge that rather than ignore it.

Urdu as a Second Language (0539)

Cambridge IGCSE

Present in some Dubai timetables alongside Arabic. Relevant here because a student carrying three written languages shows fatigue in whichever has the least marked homework, and that is usually Arabic.

Mathematics (0580)

Core and Extended

Named in most conditional sixth-form offers, which makes it the first claim on tutoring hours. A 0508 plan should be sized against what the offer actually requires rather than against which subject worries a family most.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways families buy 0508 support, described by the evidence each one produces rather than by the hours it fills. All run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

Baseline and six-week cycle

A timed past-paper task in week one to establish where the student actually is, then weekly sessions with a marked piece between each, and a written review at week six comparing the latest script against the baseline. The review is the point; the sessions are how it gets there.

  • Baseline script kept and re-shown at review, not filed and forgotten
  • The same question type repeated at week six to test the repair
  • A written review a parent can read, naming what moved and what did not

Marked-draft writing cycle

The student writes a composition or directed-writing task in their own time, by hand; it is marked against the published criteria before the session; the lesson is spent taking it apart and setting the rewrite the student does themselves.

  • Band named and justified on every piece, never a bare grade
  • Error log updated each cycle so recurrence is visible
  • Register sheet grown from the student's own slips, not a textbook list

Reading-technique block

Four to six sessions on unseen passages, where the evidence is the proportion of answers quoting from the text rather than paraphrasing from memory. A narrow, measurable repair with a clear end point.

  • Passages annotated live on screen by both student and tutor
  • Answers scored against the criteria, not marked out of impression
  • Ends when two consecutive passages hold, not when a package runs out

In-home Arabic tuition in Dubai, honestly priced, and what online returns instead

In-home Arabic tuition in Dubai is a real market with real numbers. Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 rate table puts in-home one-to-one at AED 180-350 an hour; independent home tutors quote AED 200-500 once travel is absorbed; and monthly in-home packages advertised in this market run AED 1,599-1,799 for four two-hour visits. Against that, qualified online subject tutors sit at roughly AED 150-300 and examination-year specialists at AED 200-450 or more. The gap is not the whole story, because the in-home hour usually carries a minimum booking length the online hour does not.

IB Gram does not run home visits in Dubai, or anywhere else in the UAE. Home visits are a service we offer only in India, and the same sentence appears on every country page on this site. We would rather state the market rate for the thing we do not sell than pretend it does not exist. If a family wants somebody physically present, Dubai agencies arrange it and the figures above are what to expect.

The case for online on this particular subject is the tutor pool, and it is stronger here than almost anywhere. Arabic teachers in Dubai are plentiful. Tutors who mark first-language Arabic writing against Cambridge's published criteria and can name the band a composition sits in are not. In a given community at a given hour, that overlap can be empty. The comparison table below sets the two formats against each other on the terms that matter for a language subject: who is available, what documentation comes back, and what happens when the usual tutor cannot make a session.

One cost nobody itemises deserves naming. A travelling tutor's marking happens between houses or late at night, if it happens at all, and in this market a meaningful number of in-home arrangements deliver verbal feedback and no marked script. Marking a 0508 composition properly against the criteria takes 30 to 45 minutes. Ask any provider, in-home or online, whether that time is inside the rate and what document arrives afterwards.

02

The baseline: what a first marked 0508 paper tells you in ten minutes

Everything starts with a timed past-paper task sat in week one, marked properly. Parents sometimes resist this, because it feels like paying for a test rather than for teaching. It is the cheapest hour in the whole plan. A marked baseline separates four different problems that look identical on a school report, and treating the wrong one for six weeks is how families spend AED 2,000 and see nothing move.

The four problems are these. A comprehension problem, where the student has genuinely not understood the passage, which on a first-language paper is rare and usually means the syllabus placement should be examined. A retrieval problem, where understanding is complete and answers come from memory of the passage rather than from the text, which is the single commonest pattern in Dubai scripts. A selection problem, where the summary answer rewrites the passage elegantly instead of choosing from it. And a timing problem, where the early answers are over-written and the high-mark question at the end is unfinished.

Each has a different signature on the page, and a tutor who cannot point at the signature has not diagnosed anything. Retrieval failures show as answers that are true, relevant and unquotable. Selection failures show as a summary longer than the limit with the focus words absent. Timing failures show as handwriting degrading and the final answer stopping mid-argument. None of those are visible in a grade, which is why a grade alone is not a baseline.

The written output of the baseline is three lines: the band the script sits in, the named problem, and the session count the repair is likely to take. A parent should receive those three lines before buying anything beyond the diagnostic hour. Ours arrives after the free trial lesson, and it is the document to compare against any other quote in the Dubai market, because it is the part that tells you whether a provider has looked at your child's work or at your budget.

03

A marked composition, read band by band

A marked 0508 composition should be readable by a parent who reads Arabic, and most are not, because they carry a number and a tick. What a useful marked script carries is four things: the band the piece sits in and the sentence from the criteria that puts it there; the register slips circled with the Standard Arabic alternative beside them; the recurring accuracy errors counted rather than individually corrected; and one structural instruction for the next piece.

The band justification is the part families should insist on. Criteria-based marking means a piece sits in a band because of specific features, not because it felt like a five. A tutor who writes that content is relevant but register is inconsistent across the second and third paragraphs, and quotes the criterion wording for the band above, has told the student what to do. A tutor who writes a number has told them nothing they can act on.

Counting rather than correcting is the move that produces movement. If a composition contains eleven accuracy errors across four categories, correcting all eleven teaches nothing; naming the four categories and asking the student to find the rest teaches the categories. Six weeks later the error log shows whether those categories have gone. That is what grade movement looks like at the level of evidence, well before it looks like a changed letter on a report.

The structural instruction should be singular. A composition that lacks a clear opening move, drifts in register and misreads the audience has three problems, and a student given three instructions follows none. Pick the one that costs the most marks, make it the whole brief for the next piece, and let the other two wait. Families who ask tutors for comprehensive feedback usually get comprehensive feedback and no change.

04

Two documents that show movement: the error log and the register sheet

Progress on a first-language subject is slow at the level of grades and fast at the level of categories, which is why two running documents do more for a worried parent than any report. The error log lists the categories of accuracy error a student makes, with a count per piece. The register sheet lists the spoken construction the student reaches for, the Standard Arabic equivalent, and the context each belongs in. Both are built from the student's own work rather than from a textbook, and both are the student's property.

The error log works because it makes recurrence visible. Week one: four categories, eleven instances. Week three: four categories, seven instances. Week five: three categories, four instances. Nobody needs to interpret that, and it is immune to the optimism that creeps into verbal feedback. It also catches the opposite case honestly: a log that reads four categories, eleven instances in week one and four categories, ten in week five is a plan that is not working, and the review exists to say so.

The register sheet is the document that moves 0508 writing marks more than any other single intervention we use in Dubai. Students here code-switch all day between English, dialect and a messaging register, and sustained formal Arabic is a register almost nothing in their week demands. Listing the substitutions as they appear, in the student's own words, converts an invisible habit into a checkable list. By the end of a term a 0508 student has twenty to thirty entries and reads their own drafts differently.

Both documents should be visible to the family, and on this subject many parents can read them better than they can read an English-language progress report. That is a genuine advantage of Arabic as the subject in question: the evidence is in a language the household often uses, so the audit does not depend on trusting the tutor's summary.

What actually moves in a first-language subject, and what does not

  • Moves in 4-6 sessions: summary procedure, timing discipline, commentary technique
  • Moves across a term: register control, with relapse under time pressure
  • Moves across months: reading speed in Modern Standard Arabic
  • Does not move through tutoring: a wrong syllabus placement
  • Reviewed at six weeks against the baseline script, in writing

Honesty about timescales saves families money. Three things on 0508 move quickly with marked practice: summary procedure, timing discipline, and the language-commentary move of quoting briefly and naming an effect. Four to six focused sessions each, with work marked in between, is a fair expectation, and the evidence shows up in the scripts rather than in a mood.

Two things move slowly. Reading speed in Modern Standard Arabic is built over months of regular unseen passages, because it is a habit of the eye rather than a technique. Register control improves across a term as the register sheet fills, with relapse under time pressure for weeks after the student can do it calmly. A family arriving twelve weeks before the papers should be told plainly that reading speed is not the project; summary, commentary and timing are, because those are what can still change.

One thing does not move through tutoring at all, and saying so is part of being useful: a syllabus placement that is wrong. A student who genuinely cannot comprehend first-language passages has been entered for the wrong Cambridge code, and no amount of technique work fixes that. The correct action is a conversation with the school, in writing, before the entry deadline closes. Tutoring on top of a wrong placement is the most expensive thing a parent in this market can buy.

No tutor can promise a grade and this page does not. What the plan commits to is a diagnosis in writing after the baseline, criteria-based marking on every piece, two running documents the family can read, and a six-week review that either continues or changes course. If after six weeks the marked work shows the same four error categories at the same frequency, the right response is to change the diagnosis rather than to sell more hours.

06

Why the school report says good and the mock says D

This contradiction arrives in our inbox every January and it usually has a structural explanation rather than a dishonest one. Dubai private schools report on the school's own curriculum and on effort, behaviour and attainment in class. Cambridge reports on performance in two written components under timed conditions. A student can participate confidently in Arabic lessons, hand in homework, be a pleasure to teach, and still answer summary questions from memory of the passage. Both statements are true at once.

The second explanation is group size. Arabic is mandatory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed curriculum, and KHDA requires separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, prohibiting combined classes because the curriculum expectations and language of instruction differ. In a British-curriculum school the Arab first-language group may be one class per year, taught by a department carrying several streams. Detailed written feedback on extended Arabic writing in that setting is limited by arithmetic.

The third is that KHDA calculates mandatory-subject instructional time on a 40-minute lesson unit and advises at least 25 minutes per lesson, with schools able to vary lesson length provided the weekly total is met. Those are real hours and they are not examination-technique hours. A school meeting its Arabic obligations fully can still not have spent a lesson on how the Cambridge summary question awards marks, because that is not what the obligation is about.

What a parent should do with the contradiction is narrow it. Ask the school for the mock script, not the mock grade. Ask which components the student lost marks on. Then have one piece of written Arabic marked against the published criteria by someone who marks to them. At that point the conversation stops being about whether the report or the mock is right and becomes a list of two or three specific repairs, which is a conversation that can actually produce a different result.

07

Marking a draft without crossing the line

On a language subject the boundary between teaching and producing is narrow, and it needs stating precisely because the temptation is real. A tutor may mark a student's composition against the published criteria, name the band and justify it, circle a register slip and write the Standard Arabic alternative beside it, count error categories, model a construction, and set a rewrite that the student carries out themselves. A tutor may not supply sentences for a student to transcribe, rewrite a piece into something the student could not have produced, or hand over finished work.

The safe pattern is also the effective one. Correction by category rather than by sentence means the student learns the rule and does the labour, which is the only version that improves the next unseen task. A tutor who rewrites a paragraph has produced a better paragraph and a student who has learned nothing, and on a school-submitted piece has also crossed into territory that puts the student at risk rather than the tutor.

Material is the other boundary. Cambridge owns its syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables; we reference them and link to cambridgeinternational.org rather than reproducing them as downloads. For the mandatory UAE subjects there is a further constraint: the use of different or additional content without prior permission from the Ministry of Education is prohibited, so support in Islamic Education and UAE Social Studies works with the prescribed material.

IB Gram holds no approval, accreditation, licence or partnership from KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, Cambridge International or Pearson, and operates no office, centre or branch in the UAE. Private tutors working with UAE students need the MoHRE private tuition work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, which is granted free of charge for two years; tutoring without it exposes the individual to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule is published, so none is quoted here.

Where we tutor

Dubai communities, and what the evening actually allows

Online delivery removes the drive; it does not remove homework, siblings or football practice. These notes describe what a workable 0508 session looks like across the communities we teach into.

Al Khawaneej and Al Aweer

Large villa plots a long way from the western school belt, where an in-home tutor's drive is the whole argument. Students here are usually home early, so late-afternoon sessions hold better than evening ones.

Al Garhoud and Al Mamzar

Close to several schools with long-established Arabic departments, so the local supply of Arabic teachers is good and the supply of Cambridge-criteria markers is not. The constraint here is expertise rather than distance.

Dubai Creek Harbour and Ras Al Khor

Newer towers with reliable connectivity and families who commute. Sessions after 7pm work well provided a quiet room exists, which in a two-bedroom apartment with siblings is the thing to confirm before booking.

Jumeirah Golf Estates and Dubailand

Spread-out communities where a tutor's satellite navigation adds ten minutes inside the gates. Families here often want two subjects in one evening, which is the only arrangement where an in-home visit prices sensibly.

Al Barsha 1, 2 and 3

Dense, central and full of Year 10 and 11 students. The 7pm to 9pm slot is heavily contested across the whole emirate, and here more than anywhere a fixed weekly time is worth more than a lower rate.

Zabeel, Al Kifaf and Al Jaddaf

Central apartment living close to the older school clusters. Students carry Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies alongside a full IGCSE block, so the honest session length here is often 45 minutes rather than 90.

The Villa and Mudon

Villa communities at the southern edge of the city where in-home arrangements routinely carry a two-hour minimum. Weekend morning sessions are the most productive slot we schedule, particularly for extended writing.

Nad Al Sheba and Meydan

Mixed Arab and international households, and a cohort where 0508 and 0544 placement questions come up most often. A marked piece of writing settles it; a conversation about fluency does not.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Schools around Al Garhoud, Mamzar and the Creek

Established schools with substantial Arabic provision, where first-language groups run as full classes. Written feedback volume varies by department size, and that is the number worth asking about at a parents' evening.

  • Deira International School
  • Al Mawakeb School Al Garhoud
  • Dubai Gem Private School
  • Universal American School Dubai
  • Dubai Scholars Private School

Schools around Al Khawaneej, Mirdif and Al Warqa

Large eastern cohorts carrying Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies alongside nine or ten IGCSE subjects. Timetable pressure rather than ability is what shows up in the marked work here.

  • GEMS Royal Dubai School
  • Star International School Mirdif
  • Uptown International School
  • The Westminster School

Schools in Dubailand, Al Barsha South and Nad Al Sheba

Newer schools with growing Year 10 groups, where the Arabic first-language stream may still be small. Students at the top of a small group are the ones whose marked work shows them unstretched rather than struggling.

  • GEMS FirstPoint School
  • Fairgreen International School
  • The Aquila School
  • Ranches Primary School

These schools are listed as context for the Dubai Arabic teaching picture only. IB Gram has no affiliation with, endorsement from or commercial relationship with any school named here.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send one marked piece and the mock script

Syllabus code 0508, the school and examination centre, the series your child is entered for, and any marked Arabic writing you have, including the mock script if the school will release it. The script does the diagnostic work; the conversation about fluency does not.

  2. 02

Free trial lesson, ending in three written lines

One free trial lesson per family, before any payment. The tutor works a reading passage and reads back the marked writing, then writes three lines: the band, the named problem, the likely session count. That document is what to compare against any other quote in Dubai.

  3. 03

A timed baseline in week one

A full past-paper task under timed conditions, marked against the criteria and kept. It feels like paying for a test and it is the cheapest hour in the plan, because it separates retrieval, selection, timing and comprehension problems that look identical on a report.

  4. 04

Weekly work with the two running documents

A marked composition or unseen passage every week, handwritten and photographed, with the error log and register sheet updated each time. A short note to the parent after each session: what was taught, what was set, what the last piece scored and in which band.

  5. 05

A six-week review against the baseline

The week-one script and the week-six script side by side, bands named, error categories counted. Either the evidence says the plan is working and it continues, or the diagnosis was wrong and it changes. Nobody is sold more hours on the strength of a feeling.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Evidence rather than presence

A tutor in the room proves a lesson happened. A marked script with the band justified, an error log with falling counts and a register sheet built from your child's own slips prove something changed. All three arrive by email whoever is in the room.

Marking you can audit yourself

On this subject the evidence is in Arabic, which many Dubai households read better than an English-language progress report. A parent can check the band justification and the register corrections directly instead of trusting a summary.

A criteria-marker, not just a fluent speaker

Dubai has plenty of Arabic teachers and few tutors who mark first-language writing against Cambridge's published bands. Online delivery means the match is to the second group, which inside a twenty-minute drive may be nobody.

Timescales stated before you pay

Summary procedure and timing move in four to six sessions; register control takes a term; reading speed takes months. A family twelve weeks from the papers is told which of those is realistic rather than sold a rebuild that cannot happen.

A review that can end the plan

At six weeks the baseline script and the current script are compared in writing. If the same error categories recur at the same frequency, the diagnosis changes. A provider whose review can only recommend more sessions is not reviewing anything.

The limits on the page

No regulator approval, no UAE office, no promised grade, and no home visits anywhere in the UAE. The in-home market rate is published here too, for the thing we do not sell, so a family can price the alternative honestly.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

Does IB Gram send an Arabic tutor to our home in Dubai?+

No. IB Gram does not run home visits anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we offer only in India, and the same statement appears on every country page on this site. Cambridge 0508 is taught one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. The practical argument is the tutor pool rather than convenience: Arabic teachers in Dubai are plentiful, while tutors who mark first-language Arabic writing against Cambridge's published bands are scarce, and within driving distance of a given community that overlap can be empty. If you want someone present, Dubai agencies arrange it at AED 180-500 an hour.

What should a first marked 0508 paper actually tell us?+

Three lines: the band the script sits in, the specific problem, and roughly how many sessions the repair takes. A marked baseline separates four problems that look identical on a school report. A comprehension problem, which on a first-language paper is rare and suggests the placement should be examined. A retrieval problem, where answers come from memory of the passage rather than from the text. A selection problem, where the summary rewrites rather than chooses. A timing problem, where early answers are over-written and the last one is unfinished. Each has a visible signature on the page.

How do we know our child's written Arabic is genuinely improving?+

Watch categories, not grades. An error log lists the categories of accuracy error with a count per piece, so week one at four categories and eleven instances against week five at three categories and four instances is movement nobody has to interpret. A register sheet does the same for formality: the spoken constructions the student reaches for, the Standard Arabic equivalents, and whether the same slips recur. Grades on a first-language subject move slowly and lag the underlying change by weeks, which is why families who track only the grade conclude nothing is happening when something is.

What do the band descriptors on a marked 0508 composition mean in practice?+

They mean a piece sits where it sits because of named features rather than an overall impression. Criteria-based marking should produce a band plus the criterion wording that places the script there: content relevant and developed, structure controlled, register consistent, accuracy secure. Useful marking also quotes the wording for the band above, so the student can see the specific distance. A mark out of a total with no justification is not criteria-based marking, and on this subject it is the commonest thing families are handed. Ask for the band and the sentence that justifies it.

How often should marked work come back to us?+

Every written task, before the next session, with the band named. In practice that means weekly on a standard 0508 plan: one composition or one unseen reading set, marked, then taken apart in the lesson. Marking a composition properly against the criteria takes a tutor 30 to 45 minutes, so ask any provider in Dubai whether that time is inside the rate and what document arrives afterwards. A plan where feedback is verbal and nothing is written down is a plan a family outside the room cannot audit at all.

Can we see the error log and register sheet ourselves?+

They belong to the student, so yes. Both are built from your child's own work rather than from a textbook: the log counts accuracy errors by category across pieces, and the register sheet lists the spoken construction, the Standard Arabic alternative and where each belongs. On Arabic specifically this matters more than on most subjects, because many Dubai households read the evidence more comfortably than they read an English-language report. By the end of a term a 0508 student typically has twenty to thirty register entries and reads their own drafts differently because of it.

Our school report says Arabic is good but the 0508 mock came back a D. Which is right?+

Usually both. School reports cover the school's own curriculum plus effort, behaviour and classroom attainment; Cambridge reports performance in written components under timed conditions. A student can participate confidently, hand in homework and still answer summary questions from general understanding rather than from the text. Group size contributes: in a British-curriculum school the Arabic first-language stream may be one class per year, so detailed written feedback on extended writing is limited by arithmetic. Ask the school for the mock script rather than the grade, then have one piece marked against the published criteria.

How long before a 0508 reading mark actually moves?+

It depends which repair is needed. Summary procedure, timing discipline and the language-commentary move each respond within four to six focused sessions with marked work in between. Reading speed in Modern Standard Arabic is different: it is a habit of the eye built over months of regular unseen passages, and it cannot be compressed into a term. A family arriving twelve weeks before the papers should be told plainly that reading speed is not the project and that summary, commentary and timing are, because those are the things that can still change in the time available.

Can a parent who reads Arabic check the tutor's marking themselves?+

Yes, and we would encourage it. Look for four things on a marked script: the band with the criterion wording that places it there, register slips circled with the Standard Arabic alternative written beside them, accuracy errors counted by category rather than individually corrected, and one single instruction for the next piece. If all four are present, the marking is criteria-based. If the script carries a number and a tick, it is not, regardless of how fluent the marker is. This is the one subject where a Dubai family can verify the quality of the work directly.

What evidence should we ask any Dubai tutor for before paying?+

Four things, all before money changes hands. One marked paragraph of your child's writing, so you can see what the marking looks like. A written diagnosis naming the band and the problem. A statement of whether marking time sits inside the hourly rate. And confirmation that the tutor holds the MoHRE private tuition work permit, which is free of charge and valid for two years under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023. A provider who cannot supply the first two before payment is asking you to buy a process you cannot inspect.

Is one session a week enough to produce visible movement on 0508?+

For most students, yes, provided a marked piece of written work sits between each session. The session is where a script is taken apart; the movement happens in the writing the student does alone afterwards. What does not work is a weekly session with nothing written in between, which becomes a conversation about Arabic rather than practice in it. Where we recommend twice weekly is the final eight weeks before a series, when timed practice has to happen frequently enough that writing to the clock stops being a novelty.

What should a six-week 0508 review actually cover?+

The week-one baseline script and the week-six script side by side, with the band named on each, the error categories counted on both, and the same question type re-sat so the comparison is like for like. The review states what moved, what did not, and whether the original diagnosis holds. It should be capable of two outcomes: continue, or change the diagnosis. A review that can only recommend more sessions is not a review. Families should ask for it in writing before starting, not request it at week six.

Should we keep our child's mock script or return it to the school?+

Ask the school whether you may photograph it before returning it. The mock script is the single most useful diagnostic document a 0508 family can hold, because it shows the actual signature of the loss rather than a grade standing in for it. Schools differ on release policy, and a photograph is usually acceptable where keeping the paper is not. Where no script is available, a full past-paper task sat under timed conditions in week one does the same job, which is exactly why the baseline exists in the plan.

What happens if the marked work shows no movement after six weeks?+

The diagnosis changes. If the same error categories recur at the same frequency across six weeks of marked pieces, continuing the same plan is selling hours rather than teaching. The usual outcomes are a different repair, a different tutor, or a conversation about whether the syllabus placement is right, because a student who genuinely cannot comprehend first-language passages has been entered for the wrong Cambridge code and no technique work fixes that. That conversation belongs with the school, in writing, and well before the entry deadline closes.

How do we check a tutor's marking matches Cambridge's criteria?+

Read the published assessment criteria for your child's examination year on cambridgeinternational.org, then read the tutor's band justification against them. The wording should correspond: a tutor placing a composition in a band should be using the language the criteria use about content, structure, register and accuracy. We link the official syllabus rather than reproducing it, because Cambridge owns those documents and a tutor distributing mark schemes as downloads is distributing somebody else's copyright. If a marker cannot point to the criterion behind a band, the band is an opinion.

Ask for the marked paragraph first

Before paying any Dubai tutor for Cambridge IGCSE Arabic as a First Language, ask for one paragraph of your child's writing marked against the published criteria, and read what comes back. A band with the criterion wording behind it, register slips circled with the Standard Arabic alternative, and error categories counted rather than individually corrected tells you more than an hour of conversation about experience. Our free trial lesson produces exactly that, plus three written lines naming the band, the problem and the likely session count. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, and the in-home market rate is on this page so you can price the alternative honestly.
