Cambridge IGCSE Tutor in Dubai

A Cambridge IGCSE tutor in Dubai should be able to name the syllabus code your child is entered for, the papers that code requires, and the places candidates on that tier reliably lose marks. This page sets all three out: the codes Dubai schools use, what Core and Extended actually decide, how each component is assessed, and the command-term vocabulary that awards the marks. Tuition runs online, one-to-one, over live video, in Gulf Standard Time.

  • Syllabus codes named, with the official source to confirm each against
  • Core and Extended set out as an assessment decision, not a label
  • Command terms treated as the rule they are, not as exam advice
  • Delivered online over live video, one student and one syllabus

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

The code on the statement of entry decides everything else

Cambridge IGCSE is not one qualification. It is a large family of separate syllabuses, each with its own four-digit code, its own paper set, and its own rules about tiering and practical assessment. Mathematics 0580 and Additional Mathematics 0606 are different courses that a Dubai student may sit together. Physics 0625, Coordinated Sciences 0654 and Combined Science 0653 cover overlapping content to different depths and are assessed quite differently. English First Language 0500 and English as a Second Language 0510 reward different things entirely.

This matters because almost every tutoring conversation in this market starts at the wrong level of detail. A parent asks for a science tutor; the useful request is a tutor for Cambridge 0620 Extended who has taught Paper 4 and Paper 6. A parent asks for maths help; the useful request names 0580 Extended or 0606, which are not interchangeable and rarely suit the same tutor. The code is printed on your child's statement of entry and the school's exams officer can confirm it in a sentence, and it is the single most useful piece of information you can bring to a first conversation.

The second thing the code brings with it is the tier. On most Cambridge IGCSE syllabuses, candidates are entered for either the Core paper set or the Extended paper set, and the Core papers cap the available grade at C. That is an administrative ceiling rather than a judgement about ability, and because Dubai entries are submitted months ahead of the papers, it is often fixed before a family realises it exists. Any conversation about tier belongs in the autumn term of Year 10, with evidence from marked work behind it.

The third is the assessment shape. Cambridge sciences separate multiple-choice, theory and practical assessment into distinct components, and candidates lose marks in different ways on each. The practical component rewards skills that are rarely taught explicitly: labelling axes, keeping significant figures consistent between a table and a conclusion, naming a control rather than gesturing at one, and describing what is being measured rather than what is being done. A tutor who has worked on those answers knows things a theory-only teacher does not.

IB Gram is an independent IB and IGCSE tutor-matching platform. It is not affiliated with Cambridge International and does not hold or claim any approval, accreditation or partnership from it, nor from KHDA, the Ministry of Education or Pearson. It operates no UAE office. Tuition for families in the UAE is delivered online, one-to-one, over live video; IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE, and home visiting is a service offered only in India. Syllabuses, past papers and mark schemes are referenced and linked to cambridgeinternational.org rather than reproduced, and every weighting or date on this page should be confirmed against the syllabus document for your child's own exam year.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Cambridge's school-age programmes run in a sequence, and the IGCSE year sits at the point where the assessment demand changes character. These are the stages a Dubai family encounters and what each is actually assessed on.

LOWER-SECAges 11-14 · Years 7-9

Cambridge Lower Secondary, before IGCSE

The stage that builds what IGCSE will assume: algebraic manipulation, scientific vocabulary, and written accuracy. Cambridge offers Lower Secondary Checkpoint tests, which run in March, May and October, and they give a school and a family a structured reading before the IGCSE course begins rather than after it.

Dubai schools admit new arrivals across the year, so Year 9 classes hold children from CBSE, American and other British schemes. Checkpoint results, where a school uses them, are a useful independent indicator of which specific topics were never taught in a child's previous sequence. The gaps at this stage are almost always specific rather than general, which makes short diagnostic work better value than a long weekly commitment.

IGCSE-COREAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE, Core tier

Core candidates sit the Core paper set, assessed on the Core subject content, with the available grade capped at C. The command terms are identical to Extended, so the marks still turn on reading the question properly, and the content is narrower rather than easier in style. Tutoring at this tier is largely about securing the grades in reach and testing honestly whether Extended is reachable.

Because Cambridge entries in Dubai are submitted months before the papers, a tier change requested in the spring is usually an administrative impossibility rather than a teaching decision. Where a child needs a subject at A Level or at Higher Level in the Diploma, a Core entry can close that route. Take marked evidence to the head of department in the autumn term of Year 10.

IGCSE-EXTAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE, Extended tier

Extended carries the full syllabus content and the full grade range. The additional content is where the marks concentrate: non-linear algebra and transformations in 0580, moles and electrolysis in 0620, momentum and electromagnetic induction in 0625. Papers are longer, method marks carry more weight, and the practical components demand a skill set of their own.

Extended dominates in Dubai schools feeding sixth forms that run A Level or the IB Diploma, because both post-16 routes assume the Extended content as a floor. Dubai sixth forms publish their own per-subject entry requirements rather than working to a national standard, and on campuses running both routes the same Extended grade can satisfy one and fall short for the other.

AS-AAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Cambridge International AS and A Level, after IGCSE

The route many Dubai Cambridge students take at 16, and the reason Extended content matters. International A Level exams run in the same two series as IGCSE, so a household can find two children sitting different qualifications to the same calendar. The content gap from Extended IGCSE to AS is specific and nameable rather than general.

Where a Dubai campus runs both A Level and the IB Diploma, the IGCSE grades that open each route differ by subject and are published by the school. Ask for that document before setting a target grade, because working backwards from a published threshold produces a tuition plan with a defined finish rather than an open-ended one.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the Cambridge IGCSE syllabuses Dubai schools most commonly enter, with the code, the tiering position and the specific place the marks go. Confirm the code against your child's statement of entry, since schools occasionally change syllabus between cohorts.

Mathematics 0580

Core and Extended

Core and Extended sit different paper sets, and the Extended papers reward visible method. The reliable losses are algebraic fraction manipulation, transformations, and multi-step problems where a correct first step is followed by an unexplained jump to an answer.

Additional Mathematics 0606

Extended only

A separate syllabus taken alongside 0580, not instead of it, and it assumes fluency that 0580 only introduces. Losses sit in prerequisite algebra and trigonometry rather than in the topic being examined, which is why diagnosing it properly saves more hours than teaching it faster.

Physics 0625

Core and Extended

Assessment separates multiple choice, theory and practical skills into distinct components. Theory losses cluster in momentum, circuits and electromagnetic induction, where a stated relationship before substitution is worth marks. Practical losses are about axes, significant figures and controls.

Chemistry 0620

Core and Extended

The mole determines the Extended grade more than any other single idea. A candidate who cannot move between mass, moles and concentration unprompted loses marks in several components at once. Electrolysis, rates of reaction and the organic topics at the end are the other predictable losses.

Biology 0610

Core and Extended

Content-rich and marked strictly against command terms. Candidates who know the material still score half marks by describing where the question says explain, and by using everyday vocabulary where the syllabus specifies a precise term. The fix is a rule, not more revision.

Coordinated Sciences 0654 and Combined Science 0653

Core and Extended

Three disciplines assessed together, so a weakness in one strand pulls the aggregate down invisibly. A diagnostic that reports performance separately by discipline is worth the first hour, because the real fix is almost always narrower than the overall grade suggests.

English First Language 0500 and English as a Second Language 0510

Separate syllabuses, different demands

0500 rewards controlled purposeful writing and precise reading response; 0510 rewards accuracy and task completion. The consequential issue in Dubai cohorts is children entered for the wrong one of the two, which is a conversation with the school rather than a tutoring task.

Economics 0455 and Business Studies 0450

Core and Extended

Both are lost on the longer questions, where a correct definition is never connected to the data or the case study and the application and evaluation marks go unclaimed. Because those marks are large and few, individual paper scores are noisy and a trend needs more data points.

Computer Science 0478

Extended only

Algorithms must be expressed in the published pseudocode conventions, and students fluent in Python routinely lose marks writing Python instead. The theory component on data representation and networks rewards exact vocabulary, which responds to structured recall testing.

Arabic First Language 0508 and Arabic Foreign Language 0544

Two separate routes

Arabic runs alongside the international curriculum in Dubai private schools under KHDA requirements, and the two Cambridge routes are different courses with different demands. Children are sometimes placed by nationality rather than competence, and that placement is worth checking first.

Geography 0460 and History 0470

Core and Extended

Source-and-skills subjects presented as content subjects. History candidates lose marks narrating instead of arguing from the source; Geography candidates lose them on case-study specificity and on the data-response and fieldwork components, where general answers earn nothing.

Accounting 0452 and Art and Design 0400

Core and Extended, and coursework-based

Accounting rewards exact format and layout as much as understanding, and marks go on presentation conventions. Art and Design is assessed through work produced over time, which places it under the academic-honesty rules discussed later on this page.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

All three formats below are delivered online and built around the specific syllabus code. What differs is how much of the session is content teaching and how much is paper-level work against the published criteria.

Weekly one-to-one on one syllabus

One code, one tier, one weekly slot, tracking the school's sequence so the tutor is fixing this week's lesson while the homework is still open. The work spans content, command-term discipline and the tier decision, which makes it the format where general teaching strength matters as much as paper knowledge.

  • Works from the code on the statement of entry, not a generic outline
  • Timed sets marked against the published criteria between sessions
  • A short written note after each session naming what changed
  • Pauses for school trips and study leave without losing the slot

Component-focused block

A short block aimed at one component rather than a whole syllabus: the practical paper in a science, the pseudocode questions in 0478, the data-response questions in 0455. Often the best value available, because the losses on a single component are patterned and the recovery is quick once named.

  • Targets one component, named at the outset
  • Built on past questions for that component only
  • A repeatable checklist the student keeps afterwards
  • Usually four to six sessions rather than a term

Series-term intensive

Two or three shorter sessions a week across the eight to ten weeks before a Cambridge series, every one built on timed past-paper work marked beforehand. Expect explicit triage, with the topics being left alone named, and expect the plan to be built against the correct zone timetable.

  • Built against the timetable for your centre's administrative zone
  • Comparable timed papers so the mark trend is readable
  • Explicit triage with the uncovered topics named
  • Booked a series ahead where a scarce syllabus is involved

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

Which Cambridge IGCSE codes Dubai schools actually enter

  • The four-digit code, not the subject name, is the unit a tutor works from
  • Confirm the code on your child's own statement of entry
  • Syllabus content is revised periodically; older experience may be of another version
  • Cambridge material is referenced and linked, never redistributed

Cambridge IGCSE syllabuses are identified by a four-digit code, and the code is the unit of work for a tutor. It determines the paper set, whether tiering applies, how practical skills are assessed, and which published mark scheme the work should be judged against. A request for a science tutor is therefore under-specified in a way that costs real time: Physics 0625, Coordinated Sciences 0654 and Combined Science 0653 overlap in content and differ substantially in assessment.

The table below lists the codes most commonly entered by Dubai schools, with the tiering position and the assessment shape for each. Two cautions on using it. First, schools occasionally change syllabus between cohorts, so confirm the code against your child's own statement of entry rather than against a sibling's experience. Second, syllabus content is revised periodically, and a tutor whose experience is of an earlier version is teaching to a specification your child is not sitting. Both checks take one message to the school's exams officer.

What this page does not do is reproduce Cambridge material. Syllabus documents, past papers and mark schemes are published by Cambridge International under its own terms, and the right practice is to reference them and link to cambridgeinternational.org rather than to supply them as downloads. A tutor who works from the published criteria and sends you the official link is doing it properly; one who offers a private library of papers and mark schemes is doing something else.

Core and Extended: what the tier actually decides

Tiering is the most consequential decision in a Cambridge IGCSE course and the one parents understand least. On most tiered syllabuses a candidate is entered either for the Core paper set or for the Extended paper set, and the Core papers cap the highest available grade at C. That ceiling exists regardless of how well a candidate performs, which means the entry decision rather than the examination decides the top of the range.

The content difference is not simply more of the same. Extended adds the material that carries the hardest marks: non-linear algebra and transformations in Mathematics, the quantitative mole chemistry in 0620, momentum and electromagnetic induction in 0625. The command terms are identical across tiers, so a Core candidate loses marks for exactly the same reasons an Extended candidate does, which is worth knowing because it means tier does not change what good tutoring looks like, only how much ground it covers.

The timing is the part that catches families. Cambridge entries in Dubai are submitted months before the papers are sat, and a tier change requested in the spring term of Year 11 is usually administratively closed rather than educationally refused. The conversation therefore belongs in the autumn term of Year 10, and it belongs there with evidence: marked timed work showing whether the Extended content is reachable from where the child currently stands, and an estimate of the hours it would take. That is a concrete, bounded use of tuition money with a checkable outcome.

03

How each Cambridge component is assessed, and where the marks go

Cambridge separates assessment into components with different jobs, and candidates lose marks in component-specific ways. Multiple-choice papers punish misread stems and rushed elimination rather than lack of knowledge. Structured theory papers award method and intermediate steps, so an answer that is right but unexplained can score less than one that is wrong but well set out. Practical and alternative-to-practical papers assess handling of data, apparatus and method description, which is a separate skill set from the theory.

The table that follows maps that component by component. It deliberately does not publish percentage weightings, for a reason worth stating: weightings vary by syllabus and are revised between versions, and a number restated on a tutoring page is exactly the kind of figure that becomes wrong without anyone noticing. The syllabus document for your child's exam year carries the authoritative weighting, and a tutor should be working from that document rather than from memory.

What the table is for is sequencing. If you know which component is carrying your child's largest pool of recoverable marks, the order of work chooses itself. A Chemistry candidate losing heavily on the practical paper and moderately on theory should start with the practical, because those losses are checklist-fixable and the evidence arrives within weeks. A candidate losing everywhere on the theory paper needs the content diagnosis first, and the practical checklist will not rescue the grade on its own. Ask a tutor to state that ordering explicitly in the first week, in one sentence per component, so the plan can be judged later against what it said it would do.

04

Command terms: the vocabulary that awards the marks

More Cambridge IGCSE marks are lost to command terms than to any single topic, and the loss is invisible to the student. A candidate who answers describe when the question says explain believes they have answered it. They have written true, relevant, well-expressed content and earned none of the available application marks, because the question was asking for a mechanism and they supplied an observation. Revision does not touch this, because nothing the student knows is missing.

The fix is a rule, taught once and tested repeatedly on marked work. Each command term implies a shape of answer: a cause-and-effect chain, a comparison with both sides stated, a judgement with criteria, a figure read from a graph with units. Once a student can name the shape required before writing, the mark follows from content they already had. This is why a short block aimed at command-term discipline often moves more marks per dirham than a term of content revision in a subject like Biology.

The table below sets out the terms that recur most across Cambridge IGCSE papers, with what each requires and the characteristic loss. It is deliberately usable by a parent: you can read a returned script against it and see the pattern yourself, without knowing the subject. If the same term is being mishandled in week two and week ten, that is a question for the tutor rather than for the child, because it means a rule was never installed.

05

The practical papers, and why they are the cheapest marks to recover

  • Practical losses are habits rather than knowledge gaps, so they recover quickly
  • A checklist applied to past questions is the whole method
  • The written practical paper assesses recording and interpretation, not manipulation
  • Hands-on work belongs to the school laboratory; the analysis can be taught online

Cambridge science syllabuses assess practical skills through either a practical test or an alternative-to-practical paper, and this is where otherwise strong Dubai candidates leak marks most predictably. The losses are not knowledge failures. They are habits: axes left unlabelled or scaled awkwardly, significant figures inconsistent between a table and a conclusion, a control mentioned rather than named, a method described without saying what is being measured, and a conclusion that restates the data instead of answering the question asked.

Because they are habits, they are the cheapest marks in the subject to recover. A short block aimed at one component, with a repeatable checklist applied to past questions until it becomes automatic, often moves more marks than the same hours spent on theory. It also produces evidence quickly, which matters if a family is deciding whether tuition is worth continuing. A tutor who has worked extensively on these answers knows the patterns; one who has taught only theory will teach the content again instead.

For students studying online there is a reasonable question about how practical skills can be developed without a laboratory. The honest answer is that the paper does not assess laboratory manipulation; it assesses recording, plotting, interpreting and describing method, all of which are written skills practised on past questions and real data sets. Where a child sits the practical test rather than the alternative paper, the hands-on work belongs to the school's laboratory sessions, and a tutor's role is preparing the recording and analysis that surround them.

Three series, six zones, and the deadlines that sit months early

Cambridge International runs IGCSE, O Level and International A Level exams in a June series and a November series. The February/March series that appears in a lot of search results is offered to India only, and the Primary and Lower Secondary Checkpoint tests that do run in March, May and October are not IGCSE at all, which is where most of the confusion about a spring sitting starts. For Dubai families the useful consequence is that two children in the same year group can be working to deadlines months apart, and that a resit route arrives in November rather than a full year later.

The administrative detail that matters most is zoning. Every Cambridge centre is allocated to one of six administrative zones, and Cambridge states that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for that zone, because it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong zone timetable. Ask your child's exams officer which zone the centre sits in, and build any revision plan against that timetable rather than against a generic one found online.

How far ahead the real deadlines sit is the part parents underestimate. For a June sitting, entries close in the spring, roughly four months before the first paper, and your centre sets its own internal cut-off ahead of that; forecast grades follow some weeks later, results appear for the centre on Cambridge Direct in August, and certificates arrive months after that. Pearson prints the same gap in confirmed form for families who want to see it written down: its International GCSE November 2026 papers ran from late October to 19 November 2026, and the November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. An entry closing months before the first paper is the reason a tier conversation has to happen in the autumn, and the reason booking a scarce specialist late is both dearer and less likely to succeed.

Grade reporting, and what a Dubai sixth form reads

Cambridge IGCSE results arrive in a form that confuses families, partly because schools in Dubai report in different conventions and partly because the grade on a certificate is doing several jobs at once. It signals attainment, it records which tier was sat, and it functions as an admissions threshold for a post-16 route. Those three uses pull in different directions, which is why a grade that feels acceptable at home can be insufficient for a particular subject at a particular school.

What a Dubai sixth form actually reads is its own published entry requirement for the specific subject. Those requirements are set by the school rather than nationally, they differ between A Level and the IB Diploma even on one campus, and they are usually stricter for the sciences and Mathematics. A family working backwards from a published threshold has a target; one working from a general wish to improve has a monthly payment. Ask the school for the document in writing, in Year 10 rather than Year 11.

The other reader is the Ministry of Education, for equivalency. On the British track, the published requirement counts five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade of no less than E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education not included among those five, alongside one accredited subject at Advanced Level at no less than E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. That is a different standard from a sixth form's and should be checked on the Ministry's own pages rather than inferred from a tutoring page.

Coursework, academic honesty and what a tutor will not do

  • A tutor gives feedback on the student's own drafts and supplies no wording
  • Malpractice sanctions attach to the candidate, not to whoever helped
  • Cambridge materials are referenced and linked, never redistributed
  • Ask the question directly; a vague answer is itself an answer

Some Cambridge IGCSE syllabuses include work produced over time rather than only timed papers, and that work must be the student's own. A tutor teaches the skills, explains how the published criteria award marks, gives feedback on drafts the student has written, and coaches planning and revision of their own text. A tutor does not supply wording for a submission and does not edit a piece to completion on a student's behalf. No qualification, rate or relationship changes that.

The boundary matters because the consequence falls on the student. A submission that is not the candidate's own work is a malpractice matter for the candidate, and the sanction attaches to them rather than to whoever helped. One operation found in research for these pages sells completed Internal Assessments outright at a published price, which is precisely the practice this boundary exists to exclude. Ask any prospective tutor the question directly and listen for a clear answer rather than a comfortable one.

There is a parallel limit on materials. Cambridge publishes syllabuses, past papers and mark schemes under its own terms, and supplying them as downloads is not something a tutor should offer. Reference them, cite the official page, and link to cambridgeinternational.org. A tutor who marks your child's work against the published criteria and sends you the official link is working correctly; one who offers a private archive of papers and mark schemes is offering something with a different set of problems attached.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Dubai

Cambridge provision is spread unevenly across Dubai, and the practical questions differ by community: when a child is home, which schools enter which syllabuses, and whether a scarce specialist is reachable at all.

Al Barsha, Tecom and Al Sufouh

A dense cluster of British-curriculum schools running Cambridge IGCSE before splitting post-16. Session starts from 17:00 after bus arrivals. Demand here is heavily weighted towards 0580 Extended, 0620 and 0625.

Dubai Marina, JBR and Bluewaters

Apartment living feeding the Barsha and Sufouh school corridor, with high relocation turnover and frequent mid-year starts. A mid-year arrival into a Cambridge cohort needs the specific untaught topics named rather than a general catch-up plan.

Mirdif, Al Warqa and Al Mizhar

Villa communities with nearby schools and early home times, so 16:00 starts hold. Large Cambridge cohorts and strong demand for 0580 and the separate sciences rather than for coordinated science.

Dubai Hills Estate and Arabian Ranches

Wide catchments feeding the Al Qudra and Umm Suqeim corridors. Several campuses here run both A Level and the IB Diploma after IGCSE, which changes the grade a family should be targeting in each subject.

Jumeirah 1, 2 and 3

Long-established British-curriculum schools and the shortest school runs in the city. Cambridge entries here are predominantly Extended, and demand skews towards 0606 and the separate sciences more than elsewhere.

Jumeirah Village Circle, Al Furjan and Discovery Gardens

Fast-growing mid-market communities with school runs crossing Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road, so 17:30 is a realistic start. Mixed Cambridge and Pearson provision, which makes confirming the code before booking especially worthwhile.

Deira, Bur Dubai and Al Qusais

British and Indian-curriculum schools side by side, with heavy demand for 0580 and 0620. Sessions are usually timed around Maghrib and family dinner, and the pattern shifts again through Ramadan.

Dubai South, Mudon and Town Square

Outlying communities where the pool of local specialists for 0606 and 0478 is thinnest. These are the areas where online delivery changes which syllabuses are supportable at all rather than merely what they cost.

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Cambridge-curriculum schools serving Al Barsha, Tecom and Marina

All Dubai private schools are inspected by KHDA, which publishes each school's rating and fee on its own profile. Students we support attend schools in this cluster; naming them is market context rather than a relationship of any kind.

  • Dubai College
  • Kings' School Al Barsha
  • GEMS Wellington International School
  • Dubai British School Jumeirah Park
  • Dubai International Academy

Schools serving Mirdif, Al Warqa and Al Qusais

A mix of British and Indian-curriculum provision with large IGCSE cohorts and early home times. Demand here runs towards the separate sciences rather than coordinated science, which changes the paper set a tutor needs to know.

  • Uptown International School
  • GEMS Modern Academy
  • Star International School Mirdif
  • Deira International School

Schools serving Dubai Hills, the Ranches and Al Qudra

Villa-community schools with wide catchments, several running both post-16 routes on one campus, so the IGCSE threshold a family works towards depends on whether A Level or the Diploma is intended.

  • Jumeirah English Speaking School Arabian Ranches
  • GEMS Metropole School
  • Dubai Heights Academy
  • Ranches Primary School

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Confirm the four-digit code and the tier

Ask the school's exams officer for the syllabus code and tier on your child's entry, and the series they are entered for. Cambridge 0620 Extended for June is a different request from 0654 Core for November, and the right tutor is not the same person.

  2. 02

A free trial lesson, with no card details taken

One session before any payment. Ask the tutor which component carries your child's largest pool of recoverable marks and why. A specific answer naming a component and a loss pattern tells you whether the code-level experience is real.

  3. 03

A diagnostic from a timed paper on the right tier

The first working session uses a past-paper section for the correct tier under timed conditions. Core practice does not diagnose an Extended candidate, and vice versa. The output is named causes, a sequence and an estimated hour count in writing.

  4. 04

    Sequence the work by component

Start with the component carrying the most recoverable marks, usually the practical paper in a science or method marks in Mathematics, because the evidence arrives quickly. Content gaps come second unless they are the whole problem.

  5. 05

Build the calendar from your centre's zone timetable

Ask which of the six Cambridge administrative zones your centre sits in and work from that timetable. Entry deadlines sit months before the papers, so any tier change or series decision has to be made well ahead of the exam period.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Work starts from the syllabus code, not the subject name

0580 and 0606 are different courses; 0625, 0654 and 0653 are assessed differently. A tutor is matched to the code and tier on your child's statement of entry, because the paper set and the available grade both follow from it.

The tier treated as the decision it is

Core papers cap the available Cambridge grade at C, and Dubai entries close months before the papers. This page says so plainly and points the conversation to the autumn term of Year 10, with marked evidence rather than an opinion.

Component-level sequencing

Work begins with the component carrying the most recoverable marks, which in the sciences is usually the practical paper, because those losses are habits and recover within weeks. That ordering produces evidence sooner and costs fewer hours.

No restated weightings or boundaries

Percentage weightings vary by syllabus and are revised between versions, so none are published here. The syllabus document for your child's exam year is the authoritative source, and a tutor should be working from it rather than from memory.

Cambridge material referenced, not redistributed

Syllabuses, past papers and mark schemes are published by Cambridge under its own terms. They are cited and linked rather than supplied as downloads, and work is marked against the published criteria with the official source named.

An independent platform with no claimed approval

IB Gram is an independent tutor-matching platform with no affiliation to Cambridge International, Pearson, KHDA or the Ministry of Education, no UAE office, and online delivery for UAE families rather than visits to an address.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

Which Cambridge IGCSE syllabus code is my child in Dubai actually entered for?+

It is printed on the statement of entry, and the school's exams officer can confirm it in one message. The code matters more than the subject name because it determines the paper set, whether tiering applies and how practical skills are assessed. Physics 0625, Coordinated Sciences 0654 and Combined Science 0653 overlap in content and are assessed quite differently; Mathematics 0580 and Additional Mathematics 0606 are separate courses often taken together. Confirm it against your own child's entry rather than a sibling's, because schools occasionally change syllabus between cohorts.

Does Core tier really limit the grade my child can get?+

Yes. On Cambridge tiered syllabuses the Core paper set caps the highest available grade at C, regardless of how well a candidate performs. That is an administrative ceiling set by the entry rather than a judgement about ability. Because entries in Dubai are submitted months before the papers, the ceiling is often fixed before parents realise it exists. If your child needs a subject at A Level or at Higher Level in the Diploma, the tier conversation belongs in the autumn term of Year 10, supported by marked timed work showing whether the Extended content is reachable.

What is the difference between Cambridge Physics 0625 and Coordinated Sciences 0654?+

0625 is a single-subject syllabus assessed on its own paper set, with its own practical assessment. 0654 assesses biology, chemistry and physics together across combined components, covering overlapping content to a different depth. The practical implication for tutoring is that a weakness in one discipline inside 0654 drags the overall grade while remaining invisible in the result, so a diagnostic that reports performance separately by discipline is worth the first hour. Confirm which your child is entered for before booking, because the paper set and the past-paper practice differ.

How are Cambridge IGCSE practical skills assessed if lessons are online?+

The written practical component does not assess laboratory manipulation. It assesses recording, plotting, interpreting data and describing method, all of which are written skills practised on past questions and real data sets. Where a school enters candidates for the practical test rather than the alternative paper, the hands-on work belongs to the school's laboratory sessions and a tutor's role is the recording and analysis around them. These are also the cheapest marks in the subject to recover, because the losses are habits: unlabelled axes, inconsistent significant figures, controls named vaguely.

Why does my child lose marks on answers that look correct?+

Usually command terms or unwritten method. A candidate who answers describe when the question says explain has written true, relevant content and earned none of the available application marks, because the question asked for a mechanism and received an observation. Revision does not fix it, since nothing the student knows is missing. The other common case is Mathematics method marks: working done mentally and never recorded means the marks for the route to the answer were never available. Both are rules, taught once and tested repeatedly on marked work rather than revised.

Is there a Cambridge IGCSE sitting before June from a UAE centre?+

No. From a UAE centre the options are the June series and the November series; the February/March series is offered to India only, so a Dubai candidate cannot be entered for it however ready they are. The spring dates families find online usually belong either to that Indian series or to the Primary and Lower Secondary Checkpoint tests, which are not IGCSE. The practical question for the exams officer is therefore not whether an earlier sitting exists but when the centre's internal cut-off for the June entry falls, because that is the date that decides which subjects and tiers your child is carrying, and it sits months before the papers.

What is a Cambridge administrative zone and why should we care in Dubai?+

Every Cambridge centre is allocated to one of six administrative zones, and each zone has its own version of the exam timetable. Cambridge states that it is essential to use the correct version for your zone, because it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong zone timetable. The practical step is to ask your child's exams officer which zone the centre sits in and to build any revision plan against that timetable, rather than against a generic timetable found online or restated on a tutoring page.

Is Additional Mathematics 0606 worth taking alongside 0580?+

It depends on the post-16 plan rather than on general ability. 0606 is a separate syllabus taken alongside 0580, and it assumes fluency that 0580 only introduces, which is why its losses sit in prerequisite algebra and trigonometry rather than in the topic being examined. For a student heading towards A Level Mathematics or Higher Level Analysis and Approaches, it closes a real gap. For a student who will not continue with Mathematics, the hours are usually better spent elsewhere. Ask the school why it is being offered to your child specifically.

Should a Cambridge IGCSE tutor follow our Dubai school's teaching order?+

In term time, yes. The value of weekly one-to-one is fixing this week's lesson while the homework is still open and the content is fresh, and a tutor running a parallel syllabus at their own pace creates a second set of deadlines while leaving the school's work untouched. Ask them to work from the scheme of work, the syllabus code on the statement of entry and the school's assessment calendar. In the eight to ten weeks before a series the order should change, following the mark distribution of the papers instead.

Which Cambridge component should we work on first?+

Whichever carries the largest pool of recoverable marks for your child, which is not always the one with the lowest score. In the sciences that is usually the practical or alternative-to-practical paper, because the losses are habits and a checklist fixes them within weeks, producing evidence quickly. In Mathematics it is usually method marks, recoverable on the very next paper sat. Content diagnosis comes second unless the theory paper is weak across the board. A tutor should be able to name the component and the loss pattern in the trial lesson.

Where can we get Cambridge past papers and mark schemes properly?+

From Cambridge itself, through cambridgeinternational.org and through your child's school, which has access to material for its own candidates. A tutor should reference and link those sources rather than supply a private archive, because Cambridge publishes syllabuses, papers and mark schemes under its own terms and redistributing them is not something a tutoring provider should be doing. A tutor who marks your child's work against the published criteria and sends you the official link is working correctly, and that is also the practice that keeps the marking honest.

Can a tutor help with a Cambridge IGCSE coursework component?+

With the skills, the criteria and feedback on drafts the student has written, yes. With producing any part of the submission, no. A tutor explains how the published criteria award marks, coaches planning and redrafting, and comments on what the student has already produced. They supply no wording and do not edit a piece to completion. Malpractice sanctions attach to the candidate rather than to whoever helped, which is why the boundary matters to your child specifically. Ask the question directly; a vague answer is itself informative.

Does a Cambridge IGCSE tutor come to our address in Dubai?+

Not through IB Gram. Tuition for families in the UAE is delivered online, one-to-one, over live video, and home visiting is a service offered only in India. The in-home market in Dubai does exist, at roughly AED 180 to AED 500 an hour with travel inside the fee. What online delivery changes for a Cambridge family is access to code-level experience: a tutor who has taught 0606 or 0478 across several series is available at a workable Gulf Standard Time hour rather than only if they happen to live nearby.

How many Cambridge IGCSE subjects should my child take in Dubai?+

The school decides the offer and the number, and the useful question is what the grades are for. For Ministry of Education equivalency on the British track, the published rule counts five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at no less than E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education not included among those five. One page ranking for these queries states six subjects are required, which does not match the published rule. For a Dubai sixth form, the binding constraint is its own published per-subject entry grades, which differ between the A Level and Diploma routes.

Are Cambridge grades reported as letters or numbers in Dubai schools?+

Both conventions appear, depending on the syllabus and the school's reporting practice, which is a frequent source of confusion when families compare children across schools. What matters is not the convention but the standard being applied by whoever reads the grade. A Dubai sixth form applies its own published per-subject entry requirement; the Ministry of Education applies the equivalency rule of five accredited subjects at no less than E or grade 3. Ask the school for its own threshold document in Year 10 and work the tuition plan backwards from that number.

Start with the code, then the component

Ask the school's exams officer for the four-digit syllabus code, the tier and the series, and ask which of the six Cambridge administrative zones your centre sits in. Then ask a prospective tutor which component carries your child's largest pool of recoverable marks and why. Those four pieces of information turn a vague request for a Cambridge IGCSE tutor into a plan with a sequence and a deadline. A free trial lesson comes first, with no card details and no commitment, and every weighting or date should be confirmed in the syllabus document for your child's own exam year.
