IGCSE Economics Tutor in Dubai

An IGCSE economics tutor in Dubai has one unusually direct diagnostic available: the diagram. Hand a student a blank grid and a prompt, and the marks they will lose in June show up in ninety seconds. Every session here produces a marked diagram, a banked definition set or an evaluation paragraph with the mark scheme beside it, and the record is what a parent reads. Lessons run one-to-one on live video, on Gulf Standard Time.

  • Diagrams marked against the mark scheme's labelling requirements, every session
  • Definitions banked and tested, because two-mark openers are free marks
  • Evaluation drilled as a structure rather than described as a skill
  • One free 30-minute trial lesson per family, no card details taken

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

The diagram is the fastest diagnostic in the subject

Economics has a property no other IGCSE subject shares quite so cleanly: a student's grade can usually be predicted from a blank sheet of paper. Ask them to draw the effect of an indirect tax on a market, with no notes and ninety seconds on the clock, and the result shows nearly everything. Whether the axes are labelled with price and quantity. Whether the curves are named. Whether the shift goes in the right direction. Whether the new equilibrium is marked and the old one is still visible. Whether the tax is shown as a vertical distance rather than implied.

Each of those is a mark, and in a Dubai economics script they are the marks that go missing. Students who can explain incidence of taxation articulately will draw a diagram with an unlabelled vertical axis and lose the mark anyway, because the mark scheme awards labelling. It is the least glamorous and most reliable route to a higher economics grade, and it is almost entirely absent from the way the subject is revised. A Dubai student can hold a perfectly drawn diagram in their notes for two years and still produce an unlabelled version in June, because copying a model and producing one from nothing are different acts and only one of them is examined.

So the record this plan builds is a diagram record. Every session produces at least one diagram drawn under time and marked against the labelling requirements, with the missing element circled. Over six weeks the record shows which diagrams are secure and which keep failing, and it shows it as a list rather than as an impression. Parents receive it. A student who can see that their supply-shift diagrams score and their exchange-rate diagrams do not has something to do on Tuesday.

The second item on the record is the definition bank. Economics papers open questions with a two-mark definition, and those marks are free in the sense that they require no reasoning at all, only a precise form of words. Students who paraphrase lose them routinely. Banking around forty definitions in the exact form the mark scheme accepts, tested weekly and scored, is one of the highest-return pieces of work available in the subject and it needs discipline rather than teaching.

Lessons are delivered online, one-to-one, over live video. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service offered only in India. For economics the shared screen is the right medium: a diagram drawn in a shared document can be annotated, corrected and saved, and the corrected version sits in the file next to the original. A Dubai family in Mirdif or Al Furjan also gets a tutor who marks to the specification their school actually entered rather than whoever teaches business subjects nearby.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Economics is usually a new subject at 14 rather than a continuation, which changes what the first term should contain. These are the four stages that shape a Dubai family's plan.

NEWAges 14-15 · Year 10

Starting economics in Year 10

Most students meet economics for the first time at IGCSE, so there is no prior attainment to read. The first term should establish three things: the diagram set, the definition bank, and the habit of reading the command word before writing. Content follows easily once those exist.

Dubai schools vary in whether economics or business studies is the default option at 14, and some students take both. Where both are taken the overlap in market and cost content is substantial, which is worth exploiting rather than revising twice.

Y10Ages 14-15 · Year 10

IGCSE Economics, Year 10

Microeconomic content predominantly: the basic economic problem, allocation of resources, demand and supply, elasticity, market failure and the household and firm as decision makers. The diagram load is front-loaded here, which makes Year 10 the right year to build the diagram record.

Dubai's December break falls part way through the microeconomics block and is a useful window for a diagram intensive: four consecutive mornings covering the full market-diagram set produces more than four weekly sessions across a term.

Y11Ages 15-16 · Year 11

IGCSE Economics, Year 11

Macroeconomics, development and international trade, plus the structured-question technique that carries most of the Cambridge grade. The evaluation question is the Year 11 priority because it is the highest-tariff item and the one students most often answer as a longer explanation.

UAE candidates sit the Cambridge June and November series; the February/March series is offered to India only. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs May/June and November. Dubai schools enter overwhelmingly for the summer window, with November kept as the resit route.

POST-16Ages 16-19 · Years 12-13

A Level economics or IB Diploma economics

The IGCSE grade is the entry currency and the diagram habit is the thing that actually transfers. Diploma economics requires three commentaries of 800 words each on different units from different published news sources; A Level economics raises the evaluation demand sharply. Both reward the same discipline built at IGCSE.

UAE Ministry of Education equivalency on the British track asks for five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic Education excluded from the five, plus one A Level at E or two AS Levels at E. The process is the ministry's; tutoring is not required for it.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Economics divides into a diagram set, a definition bank and a question-type set, and a plan needs all three. These are the units a Dubai plan is built from.

The basic economic problem

Cambridge 0455 and Pearson 4EC1

Scarcity, choice, opportunity cost and the production possibility curve. The first diagram students meet and the one most often drawn without labelled axes, which sets a habit that then persists through every later diagram.

Demand, supply and market equilibrium

Cambridge 0455 and Pearson 4EC1

The core diagram set: shifts against movements along a curve, and the distinction between the two is where most early marks are lost. A student who shifts a curve when the question required a movement has made one error and lost the whole answer.

Price elasticity

Cambridge 0455 and Pearson 4EC1

Elasticity of demand and supply, its determinants and its application to revenue and taxation. Calculation marks appear here, and they are lost to sign handling and to failing to interpret the number once it is produced.

Market failure and government intervention

Cambridge 0455 and Pearson 4EC1

Externalities, merit and demerit goods, subsidies, indirect taxes, maximum and minimum prices. The diagram-heaviest topic in the specification, and the one where the vertical-distance conventions for a tax or a subsidy are routinely omitted.

Microeconomic decision makers

Cambridge 0455

Households, workers, trade unions, firms, costs, revenue and market structure. Wage determination questions are diagram questions in disguise, and students who treat them as discussion lose the labelling marks available.

Government and the macroeconomy

Cambridge 0455 and Pearson 4EC1

Macroeconomic aims, fiscal and monetary policy, inflation, unemployment and growth. Chains of reasoning rather than diagrams dominate here, and each link in a chain is a mark, so a chain with a missing middle step scores less than it reads.

Economic development

Cambridge 0455

Living standards, poverty, population and the characteristics of developing economies. The topic where evaluation questions are most common and where answers most often become lists of advantages and disadvantages with no judgement at the end.

International trade and exchange rates

Cambridge 0455 and Pearson 4EC1

Specialisation, protection, the balance of payments and exchange rate determination. Exchange-rate diagrams have their own axis conventions and are the set most frequently missing from a student's diagram record entirely.

The definition bank

Not a topic, and the cheapest marks in the subject

Around forty terms that mark schemes accept in a precise form. Two-mark openers require no reasoning, only the right words, and students who paraphrase lose them across an entire paper. Built by testing rather than teaching.

Evaluation and the high-tariff question

The highest-value question type on both specifications

A judgement supported by reasoning, with the condition under which it holds stated. Students answer it as a longer explanation or as a balanced list. It has a structure, it can be drilled, and it is where the top band is decided.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Economics support divides into three jobs with three different rhythms, and running them as one undifferentiated weekly hour is why some students improve slowly.

Weekly session with a timed diagram and a marked question

Sixty minutes a week. The first ten minutes are a diagram drawn under time from a prompt and marked against the labelling requirements with the missing element circled. The next thirty work on a structured question sat between sessions and marked beforehand. The last twenty set the next task. The diagram record and the marked script go to the parent the same evening.

  • 60 minutes, live video, one named specification per slot
  • One diagram drawn under time and marked in every session
  • Structured question marked before the session, never during it
  • Diagram record updated and dated each week

Definition bank, tested rather than taught

Around forty terms in the precise form mark schemes accept, tested in five-minute sets two or three times a week and scored. It requires administration rather than subject expertise, which means a student can run it alone with a good list or at the bottom tier of the market, and it is the cheapest set of marks in the subject.

  • Around forty terms, in mark-scheme form rather than paraphrase
  • Five-minute tests two or three times a week, scored
  • Score recorded so the gap list shortens visibly
  • Runnable by the student alone; no specialist rate needed

Evaluation block, structure-led

Six to eight sessions aimed solely at the high-tariff question. Each session produces one evaluation paragraph written to a fixed structure, marked against the published requirements, with the judgement and its condition identified or flagged as missing. The structure is drilled until it is automatic rather than discussed as a skill.

  • Six to eight sessions with a stated end rather than open-ended
  • One evaluation paragraph written and marked per session
  • The judgement and the condition under which it holds both required
  • Lists of advantages and disadvantages marked explicitly as a loss

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

The diagram audit, and what each missing label costs

Start with an audit rather than a lesson. Give the student eight prompts across the specification's diagram set and ninety seconds each, with no notes: a demand shift, a supply shift, an indirect tax, a subsidy, a maximum price, a minimum price, a production possibility curve and an exchange-rate market. Mark each against the labelling requirements. The result is the clearest single page of evidence available in this subject, and it usually surprises both the student and the family.

What the audit finds is consistent. Axes unlabelled or labelled with the wrong quantity. Curves drawn but not named, so a shifted line is ambiguous. Shifts drawn in the correct direction with the original curve erased, which removes the comparison the mark depends on. New equilibria not marked. Taxes and subsidies shown as a shift without the vertical distance that identifies their size. Each of these is a specific mark, each is mechanical, and none requires any further understanding of economics to fix.

The reason this is not already fixed in class is practical. A Dubai economics teacher with a cohort of twenty-five cannot mark each student's eight diagrams individually every fortnight, so diagrams are taught at the board, copied correctly into notes, and never reproduced under time without a model in view. A student can hold a correct diagram in their notes for two years and still produce an unlabelled version in June, and nobody will discover it until the paper is marked.

The record makes the fix visible. Diagrams move from red to green on a dated list, and the ones that stay red get the session time. After six weeks most students have a short red list of two or three diagram types, which is a manageable problem with a clear end. The table sets out the audit and what each element is worth.

THE DIAGRAM AUDIT: WHAT MUST BE ON THE PAGE AND WHAT IS LOST WITHOUT IT
DiagramWhat must be labelledThe usual Dubai omissionWhat the omission costs
Demand or supply shiftBoth axes, both curves named, original and new curve visible, both equilibria markedThe original curve erased after the shift is drawnThe comparison the question asked for is no longer on the page
Indirect tax on a marketThe supply shift plus the tax as a vertical distance between the curvesThe shift drawn, the vertical distance never shownThe mark for identifying the size and incidence of the tax
SubsidyThe supply shift with the subsidy shown as a vertical distanceShift drawn in the wrong direction under time pressureThe whole answer, because the analysis then describes the opposite effect
Maximum or minimum priceThe intervention line, and the resulting shortage or surplus markedThe line drawn without the shortage or surplus identifiedThe consequence mark, which is the point of the diagram
Production possibility curveBoth axes with named goods, the curve, and the point under discussionAxes left as x and yThe axis-labelling marks, on the first diagram of the course
Exchange rate marketAxes as price of the currency and quantity, both curves namedAxis conventions confused with a goods marketThe analysis reads as a goods market and loses direction marks
02

Where the Cambridge grade actually sits

On Cambridge IGCSE Economics 0455 the structured-question paper carries seventy per cent of the grade and the multiple-choice paper carries thirty. That ratio should determine how a plan allocates time, and in most Dubai revision timetables it does not: multiple-choice practice is easy to set, easy to mark and produces a reassuring score, so it absorbs effort disproportionate to its weight.

The structured paper is a sequence of question types with different demands, and treating it as one thing is the second planning error. The two-mark definition needs a banked form of words. The four-mark explanation needs a chain of reasoning with each link present. The six-mark analysis usually needs a diagram. The high-tariff evaluation needs a judgement with its condition stated. Four different skills, one paper, and a student can be secure in two and losing heavily in the other two with a middling total that explains nothing.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Economics 4EC1 splits differently, setting two written papers of ninety minutes each at equal weight, with microeconomics and business economics in one and macroeconomics and the global economy in the other. There is no separate multiple-choice paper to lean on, which changes the revision balance and means neither half of the subject can be partly abandoned.

So the first action is to confirm the specification code with the school's exams officer and then pull the component weightings for it. That costs one email. The second is to break the student's marked script down by question type rather than by topic, because the topic view says 'weak on market failure' where the question-type view says 'loses every evaluation mark on every topic', and only one of those is a plan.

03

Evaluation is a structure, not a quality

  • Mechanism, counter-consideration, judgement, and the condition it depends on
  • The conditional clause is the most commonly missing element in a Dubai script
  • Six to eight drilled paragraphs make the structure automatic
  • UAE material gives real conditions for exchange-rate and policy questions

The high-tariff question is where the top band is won and it is the question Dubai students most reliably answer wrongly. They produce either a longer explanation — more detail about the same mechanism — or a balanced list of advantages and disadvantages ending without a judgement. Both read as serious work. Neither reaches the top band, because the descriptors require a supported judgement rather than coverage.

The structure that works is explicit enough to drill. State the mechanism and its effect. State the counter-consideration and why it matters. Then make a judgement, and state the condition under which the judgement holds: it depends on the elasticity of demand, on the time period, on the size of the intervention relative to the externality, on whether the economy is near capacity. That final conditional clause is the thing most frequently absent from a Dubai economics script and it is frequently the difference between bands.

Drilling it means writing one evaluation paragraph per session, to the structure, and having it marked with the judgement and the condition either identified or flagged as missing. Six to eight repetitions is usually enough for the shape to become automatic. Described rather than drilled, evaluation stays a vague instruction to 'show more critical thinking', which no fifteen-year-old can act on.

There is a specific advantage available to Dubai students here, and almost nobody uses it. Evaluation requires a condition, and conditions are easiest to state convincingly with a concrete case in mind. A student in this emirate has immediate access to real material: an economy that has pursued diversification away from oil, a currency pegged to the US dollar, the introduction of value added tax, a large expatriate labour force, free-zone policy, and a property market with visible cycles. Those are legitimate examples for exchange-rate, fiscal-policy, labour-market and development questions, and a student who uses them is writing from observation rather than from a textbook about a generic country.

04

The definition bank: the cheapest marks on the paper

Economics mark schemes accept definitions in a precise form, and a paraphrase that demonstrates understanding frequently earns less than the exact wording. Opportunity cost, price elasticity of demand, a merit good, a progressive tax, the balance of payments, real income, a trade union, specialisation: each has a form of words that scores, and each carries two marks that require no reasoning whatsoever.

Across a structured paper those openers add up to a meaningful fraction of the total, and they are available to any student willing to memorise. The work is not teaching. It is a list of around forty terms, tested in five-minute sets two or three times a week, scored, with the gap list shortening as it goes. It requires administration rather than expertise, which means a student can run it alone and a family does not need to pay a qualified rate for it.

Two practical points make the bank work. The terms have to be written in the form the specification and mark scheme use, not in the form a textbook introduces them, and that requires someone who has read both. And testing has to be written and scored rather than verbal and approximate, because a student who recognises a definition when they hear it will not produce it under time. Recognition and production are different, and only one of them is examined.

The record keeps it honest. A definition score of 31 out of 40 in week one and 38 in week five is a visible, attributable improvement in a subject where improvement otherwise feels vague. It also tells a parent something unusual: that part of the work was handed back to the student rather than sold to them, which is the right answer for a task that needs discipline rather than teaching.

05

Chains of reasoning in the macro topics

  • Macro marks are allocated to links in a chain, not to the conclusion
  • Confident students skip steps and lose marks that were available
  • Numbering the links against the mark scheme fixes it in a fortnight
  • A concrete case strengthens a chain; the UAE supplies several

Macroeconomics is where the diagram load drops and the chain load rises. A question asking how a cut in interest rates might reduce unemployment is asking for a sequence: lower borrowing cost, higher investment and consumption, higher aggregate demand, higher output, more labour demanded, lower unemployment. Marks are allocated to links in that chain, and a student who gives the first and the last earns substantially less than one who gives three consecutive steps.

Dubai scripts lose these marks in a specific way: the student knows the conclusion and jumps to it. The answer states that lower interest rates reduce unemployment because firms invest more, which skips two steps that were available. It reads as confident economics and marks as partial, which is the most frustrating category of loss because the student feels they answered correctly.

The repair is visible in the marking. Number the links in the student's own answer, then number the links in the mark scheme, then compare. Done three or four times a student starts writing in steps because they can see where the marks were. It is a fortnight's habit change and it applies across the whole macro section at once rather than topic by topic.

The macro topics also reward real examples more than the micro ones do, which brings the Dubai advantage back into play. Inflation, exchange-rate policy, government spending and development are all questions where a concrete case strengthens a chain. A student who can refer to a currency peg when discussing monetary policy constraints, or to a diversification programme when discussing structural change, is giving the examiner a reason to believe the chain rather than reciting it.

06

The term record, and how a Dubai family reads it

Three things go on the record and all three are countable. The diagram list, with each of the eight or nine specification diagrams marked red, amber or green and dated. The definition score out of around forty, dated. And the marked structured question each week with every loss tagged by question type: definition, chain, diagram or evaluation.

That combination answers questions a report card cannot. A student at a middling total with a green diagram list, a definition score of 38 and every evaluation mark missing has one problem, and six to eight drilled evaluation paragraphs is the whole plan. The same total with a red diagram list and secure evaluation is a completely different problem with a completely different cost. Both students look identical on a school report.

The record also sets its own end. When the diagram list is green, the diagram time stops. When the definition score plateaus near full marks, the testing moves to maintenance. When the evaluation tag stops appearing in the weekly marking, the block finishes. A plan whose own evidence can conclude it is a different product from a rolling commitment, and it is worth asking any provider whether theirs can.

Placement in the Dubai calendar is worth a note. The most informative re-test is the one sat in the second week of January rather than the week before the December break, because it measures whether a habit survived three weeks away from the subject. A diagram set that is still green in January is secure. One that reverts was recent instruction rather than learning, and that distinction changes what the spring term should contain.

THE ECONOMICS RECORD: THREE COUNTABLE THINGS AND WHAT EACH DECIDES

07

The UAE economy as examination material

Economics is the one IGCSE subject where living in Dubai is a direct academic advantage, and most students in the emirate never use it. Examination answers improve when a general mechanism is anchored to a concrete case, and a student here has several at hand that a textbook about a generic developed economy does not supply.

The dirham's peg to the US dollar is the most useful of them. It gives a student a real, specific constraint to discuss when a question asks about monetary policy independence or about the effects of a currency movement, and it turns a textbook paragraph about exchange-rate regimes into an observation. Diversification away from hydrocarbon revenue gives the same service for questions about structural change, economic development and the limits of relying on a single sector.

The labour market offers more. A large expatriate workforce, significant remittance outflows and sector-specific demand are legitimate material for questions on wage determination, labour mobility and the balance of payments. Free-zone policy is a concrete example for questions about attracting foreign direct investment and about the trade-offs of tax and regulatory incentives. The introduction of value added tax is a real instance of indirect taxation for incidence and revenue questions.

Two cautions apply. Use examples to anchor a mechanism, not to replace it: a diagram and a chain of reasoning are still required, and an answer that is all local illustration and no analysis scores worse than one that is all analysis. And keep the claims general and checkable rather than inventing figures. A student who states a specific growth rate or a specific tax yield from memory is risking a wrong number in an answer that did not need one.

08

What economics support costs in Dubai, and the rules around it

Parents comparing economics tuition in Dubai rarely compare hourly rates; they compare what leaves the account each month. The monthly packages advertised in this market include AED 799 for eight online sessions, which is the figure the hourly bands below have to be read against. Those bands, read in October 2026: Tutopiya from AED 33-52 an hour and EdFlik from AED 45-65 at the budget end; Unitors publishing IGCSE tuition from AED 150; TutorChase quoting AED 270 for specialist work; the Bestimate rate survey putting IB and IGCSE specialists at AED 200-450 and above; BartyED publishing AED 650 for a premium named tutor. An economics plan that runs two terms is therefore a question of how many qualified-band hours it needs in total, not of which monthly package looks cheapest in September.

Economics allocates unusually cleanly across those bands. The definition bank needs administration rather than expertise and belongs at the bottom tier or with the student. Diagram marking and question-type tagging need someone who knows the labelling requirements, which is the qualified band at AED 150-300. The evaluation block is the same band for six to eight sessions with a stated end. A sequenced plan therefore spends a modest number of qualified-band hours and hands the cheapest marks back to the student.

The in-home comparison runs the same way as across this market: the Bestimate survey puts qualified in-home one-to-one at AED 180-350 an hour, with independent home tutors quoted at AED 200-500, against AED 150-300 for comparable work online. The premium pays for a commute. For economics the shared screen also keeps every marked diagram in a file that can be compared in March, which a pen-marked sheet cannot. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai or anywhere in the UAE; home visits are an India-only service.

Three rules govern how this subject is taught here. The first concerns the material: economics revision runs on past papers and mark schemes, and those documents belong to Cambridge and Pearson, so they are referenced and linked from this page rather than reproduced on it. The second concerns the person teaching: private tutoring in the UAE requires the MoHRE private tuition work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, granted free of charge for two years through MoHRE's own service with a stated two-working-day completion time, and tutoring without one carries fines and penalties under the applicable laws, with no published fine schedule. The third concerns us: IB Gram holds no approval, accreditation, licence or partnership from KHDA, the Ministry of Education, Cambridge or Pearson, and operates no UAE office or centre.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Dubai

Delivery is online, so the tutor is matched to the specification rather than to a driving radius. What the postcode changes is when a student can sit a timed structured-question paper without interruption.

Dubai Marina and JLT

Short commutes and apartment study space. Diagram work needs a flat surface and a pen rather than silence, which makes an after-school slot practical here even when a two-hour timed paper is not.

Al Barsha and Dubai Hills Estate

Large option-subject cohorts, so economics classes here are often sizeable and setted. An individually marked diagram record is the kind of evidence a big class cannot generate per student, which is usually why families in this cluster look outside.

Arabian Ranches, Mudon and Damac Hills

Long bus routes and evening commitments. Sessions here run late, so the timed structured-question paper is set for a weekend morning and the session is spent on the marked version and the diagrams inside it.

Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim and Al Safa

Established schools with long-running economics provision and specialist teachers, so the gap a tutor fills here is usually individual diagram marking and definition testing rather than content teaching.

Mirdif, Al Warqa and Al Qusais

A dense mix of curricula and frequent transfer. A student arriving mid-course from a different system may have met the content in a different order and with different diagram conventions, so an audit precedes teaching.

Dubai Silicon Oasis and Academic City

Short commutes make a 4.30pm start realistic, which suits live diagram work where the student draws and the tutor annotates in the same document rather than describing a correction.

Al Furjan, Discovery Gardens and Dubai South

Newer schools where economics may be taught by a teacher covering several business subjects. With less subject-specific moderation available internally, an external diagram mark carries proportionally more weight.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Established Dubai British-curriculum schools

Long-running economics provision with specialist teachers and years of internal results history. Families here typically want individual diagram marking and definition testing rather than content teaching, because the teaching is already in place.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Confirm the specification and the component weightings

Email the school's exams officer for the code — Cambridge 0455 or Pearson Edexcel 4EC1 — because the component split differs and so does which half of the subject sits in which paper. Teachers often do not have codes to hand; exams officers do, because entries are made from them.

  2. 02

Free 30-minute trial lesson, one per family

Live video with the matched tutor, no card details taken, no obligation. It is spent on two diagrams drawn under time and marked against the labelling requirements with the missing element circled, because that is the fastest honest diagnostic in the subject and it should be seen before anything is bought.

  3. 03

    The eight-diagram audit

Eight prompts, ninety seconds each, no notes, marked against the labelling requirements. The output is a red, amber and green diagram list with a date on it. For most Dubai students this single page changes the plan, because it identifies marks being lost for reasons unconnected to understanding.

  4. 04

    Hand back the definition bank

Around forty terms in mark-scheme form, with a written five-minute test two or three times a week, scored by the student or a parent. This is deliberately not sold as tutoring time, because it needs discipline rather than expertise and it is the cheapest set of marks on the paper.

  5. 05

Weekly marked question, tagged by type

A structured question sat between sessions and marked beforehand, with every loss tagged definition, chain, diagram or evaluation. The tag distribution tells you what to buy next, and it is frequently narrower than the family expected.

  6. 06

    Re-audit in January

The diagram audit repeated in the second week of January, after Dubai's long December break, because that measures whether the habits survived three weeks away from the subject. A set that reverts was recent instruction, and the spring plan is written accordingly.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

A diagram is marked every session

One diagram drawn under time from a prompt, marked against the published labelling requirements with the missing element circled. It is the fastest diagnostic in economics and the one thing a class of twenty-five cannot provide per student every fortnight.

The diagram list is dated and visible

Each specification diagram sits on a red, amber and green list with a date, so a student knows that their supply shifts score and their exchange-rate diagrams do not. That is a Tuesday task rather than a general sense that economics is hard.

Definitions are handed back, not sold

Around forty terms tested in five-minute written sets two or three times a week, scored, and run by the student. Those marks need discipline rather than expertise, so charging a qualified rate to supply them would be charging for the wrong thing.

Evaluation is drilled as a structure

Mechanism, counter-consideration, judgement, and the condition under which the judgement holds. Six to eight written paragraphs marked against that shape, with balanced lists flagged as a loss. 'Show more critical thinking' is not an instruction a fifteen-year-old can act on.

Losses are tagged by question type

Definitions, chains, diagrams and evaluation are four different skills on one paper, and a middling total can hide two secure ones and two failing ones. The topic view says weak on market failure; the question-type view says the actual problem.

Local material used properly

A currency peg, diversification, free-zone policy and a large expatriate labour market are real anchors for exchange-rate, development and labour questions. Used to support a mechanism rather than to replace it, they make an answer read as observation rather than recitation.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

Why do diagrams cost Dubai students so many IGCSE economics marks?+

Because marks are awarded for labelling, and labelling is the part never practised under time. A student who can explain the incidence of an indirect tax articulately will draw the diagram with an unlabelled vertical axis, the original supply curve erased and the tax never shown as a vertical distance, and lose three marks on an answer they understood. Diagrams get taught at the board, copied correctly into notes and never reproduced from a blank page. The audit is eight prompts at ninety seconds each with no notes, and it finds the problem immediately.

What should be labelled on an IGCSE economics market diagram?+

Both axes with price and quantity, both curves named, the original curve left visible when a shift is drawn, both the old and the new equilibrium marked, and for a tax or a subsidy the vertical distance between the two supply curves shown. Each of those is a mark. The most common single omission in Dubai scripts is erasing the original curve after drawing the shift, which removes the comparison the question was asking for and makes the rest of the analysis unsupported by anything on the page.

How much of the Cambridge 0455 grade is the structured paper?+

Seventy per cent, with the multiple-choice paper carrying thirty. That ratio should drive the revision plan, and in most Dubai timetables it does not, because multiple-choice practice is easy to set, easy to mark and produces a reassuring score. The structured paper also contains four different skills: a banked two-mark definition, a chain of reasoning, a diagram-bearing analysis and a high-tariff evaluation. A student can be secure in two of those and losing heavily in the other two, with a middling total that explains nothing.

What does an IGCSE economics evaluation answer actually need?+

A judgement with the condition under which it holds. The structure is: state the mechanism and its effect, state the counter-consideration and why it matters, make a judgement, then say what the judgement depends on — the elasticity of demand, the time period, the size of the intervention relative to the externality, whether the economy is near capacity. That final conditional clause is the element most frequently missing from Dubai scripts, and it is often the difference between bands. A balanced list of advantages and disadvantages with no judgement does not reach the top band however well written.

Why does my child write good economics and get middling marks?+

Usually because the marks are allocated to things the writing does not contain. Macro answers lose marks for skipping links in a chain: a student who knows that lower interest rates reduce unemployment states it and jumps, missing two steps that were available. Micro answers lose labelling marks on diagrams. Opening questions lose definition marks to paraphrase. Evaluation answers lose the top band for having no conditional judgement. None of those is a knowledge gap, and all of them are visible once a script is tagged by question type rather than discussed by topic.

How do I build an IGCSE economics definition bank?+

Around forty terms written in the form the specification and mark scheme use, not in the form a textbook introduces them, then tested in written five-minute sets two or three times a week and scored. Writing matters: a student who recognises a definition when they hear it will not produce it under time, and only production is examined. The score is recorded so the gap list visibly shortens. The work needs administration rather than subject expertise, which is why it should be handed to the student rather than bought at a qualified hourly rate.

Can a Dubai student use the UAE economy in IGCSE economics answers?+

Yes, and almost nobody does. The dirham's peg to the US dollar is a real constraint to cite on monetary policy independence and exchange-rate questions. Diversification away from hydrocarbon revenue anchors questions on structural change and development. A large expatriate workforce and significant remittance outflows are legitimate material for labour-market and balance-of-payments questions, and free-zone policy for foreign direct investment. Two cautions: anchor a mechanism rather than replacing it, since the diagram and the chain are still required, and keep claims general rather than inventing figures from memory.

What is the difference between Cambridge 0455 and Edexcel 4EC1 economics?+

The component structure. Cambridge IGCSE Economics 0455 sets a multiple-choice paper at thirty per cent and a structured-question paper at seventy, both drawing across the whole specification. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Economics 4EC1 sets two written papers of ninety minutes at equal weight, with microeconomics and business economics in one and macroeconomics and the global economy in the other. The practical consequence for a Pearson student is that neither half of the subject can be partly abandoned, and there is no multiple-choice paper to lean on for a reassuring share of the grade.

Is economics a good IGCSE option choice in Dubai?+

It suits students who like structured argument and are prepared to be precise, and it carries an unusual property: much of the grade is mechanical. Diagrams, definitions and chain structure are all learnable without special aptitude, which means a diligent student can score well even where the economic intuition is developing slowly. It is less suitable for a student who dislikes diagrams, since the diagram load is substantial and unavoidable. Where a school offers both economics and business studies, the overlap in market and cost content is substantial and worth exploiting rather than revising twice.

How long does it take to fix an economics diagram problem?+

Usually four to six weeks, because it is a production habit rather than a knowledge gap. The method is one diagram drawn under time from a prompt in every session, marked against the labelling requirements with the missing element circled, and tracked on a dated red, amber and green list. Most students arrive with six or seven diagrams failing and leave the block with a red list of two. The real test is the re-audit after Dubai's long December break: a set still green in January is secure, while one that reverts was recent instruction.

What does an IGCSE economics tutor cost in Dubai?+

Published rates read in October 2026 put budget online provision at AED 33-52 at Tutopiya and AED 45-65 at EdFlik, a qualified online subject tutor at AED 150-300 with Unitors listing IGCSE from AED 150, specialist work at AED 270 at TutorChase, and premium named listings at AED 650. For economics the allocation is unusually clean: the definition bank belongs at the bottom tier or with the student, while diagram marking, question-type tagging and the evaluation block need the qualified band. That makes a sequenced plan a modest number of qualified-band hours.

Does online tuition work for a diagram-heavy subject like economics?+

It works better than paper for this specific job. A diagram drawn in a shared document can be annotated in a different colour, corrected while the student watches, and saved alongside the original, so a term's diagram work is comparable rather than scattered across exercise books. A diagram marked in pen and carried away cannot be set beside its corrected version in March. The published cost difference also runs one way: AED 180-350 for qualified in-home work in this market against AED 150-300 online. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; that is an India-only service.

When are IGCSE economics exams sat by Dubai candidates?+

Cambridge runs a June series and a November series and UAE candidates sit those two; the February/March series is offered to India only, so a March date on a tutoring page belongs to another country's calendar. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs May/June and November. One administrative point is worth more than the dates: every Cambridge centre is allocated to one of six administrative zones, and Cambridge states it is essential to use the correct timetable version for the centre's zone and that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong one.

Should a Year 11 in Dubai prioritise diagrams or evaluation?+

Whichever the tagged script says, and the two have different costs. Diagrams are a four-to-six week production-habit fix with a clear end, and the gain appears across every micro topic at once. Evaluation is six to eight drilled paragraphs and the gain appears in the highest-tariff question on every topic. A student with a green diagram list and no conditional judgements should buy the evaluation block only. A student with a red diagram list and secure evaluation should buy the diagram work only. Buying both when one is already sound is the common overspend.

What if no economics specialist is available for our specification?+

You should be told, with the options named rather than a general business-subjects tutor quietly substituted. Economics requests in this emirate concentrate in the spring term of Year 11, and a tutor who has taught business studies but not the economics specification will not know the labelling requirements that the diagram marks depend on. The honest choices are a wait with a date attached, a tutor based outside the UAE delivering on the same live video platform and on Gulf Standard Time, or a referral elsewhere. No competitor page found in this market discloses a coverage limit at all.

Eight diagrams, ninety seconds each

The cheapest useful economics diagnostic takes twelve minutes and no notes: eight diagrams from the specification set, ninety seconds each, marked against the labelling requirements. That one page usually identifies marks being lost for reasons that have nothing to do with understanding economics, and it tells you whether the plan is a four-week diagram fix, a six-session evaluation block, or a definition bank the student can run alone. Email the school for the specification code, take the free 30-minute trial lesson, and ask for the diagram list with a date on it.
