IGCSE Chemistry Tutor in Dubai

If you can only buy a few hours, buy them in the right order. An IGCSE chemistry tutor in Dubai can work on a dozen things, and they do not all return the same number of marks per dirham. This page ranks the available interventions by value, prices each one against the published AED bands in this emirate, and explains which syllabus and practical route your child is actually sitting. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

Buying IGCSE chemistry help in the right order in Dubai

Chemistry rewards targeted spending more than any other IGCSE science, because the marks are distributed unevenly and some of them are extremely cheap to collect. A student who learns the qualitative analysis observations properly picks up marks on a predictable question type within two sessions. A student who spends the same two sessions discussing bonding theory may gain nothing measurable. Order matters, and almost nobody sells it that way.

The published Dubai bands give the costings their inputs. Tutopiya advertises from AED 33 to 52 an hour and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65 at the floor. A qualified online subject tutor sits at roughly AED 150 to 300, with Unitors listing IGCSE from AED 150 and TutorChase quoting AED 270. Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table puts in-home visits at AED 180 to 350 and market home tutors at AED 200 to 500, with specialist exam-year support at AED 200 to 450 and above.

Ranked against those bands, the picture is clear. Qualitative analysis is the cheapest mark available, because it is recall of a fixed table and two sessions usually settles it. Mole calculations are the most consequential, because the chain from mass to moles to ratio to answer appears across the whole paper and a break anywhere in it loses everything downstream. Organic chemistry is a memory load with a structure, which makes it quicker than students expect. Bonding theory is the most interesting and the least efficient purchase.

Two administrative facts come first. Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry 0620 and Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Chemistry 4CH1 are different specifications, and Combined or Co-ordinated Sciences routes cover a reduced subset of the content. The practical element differs too: Cambridge offers a practical test and an alternative-to-practical paper, while Pearson assesses practical skills inside the written papers. Confirm all of it with the school in writing before buying anything.

Dubai's examination pattern is straightforward once stated. Cambridge International runs IGCSE in a June series and a November series, and UAE candidates sit those two; the February and March series is offered to India only. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May and June and again in November. A student needing more time than the summer allows therefore has a real second route rather than only a compressed one.

Delivery is stated once. Chemistry support for Dubai families runs one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, scheduled around the school day. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; in-home tutoring is a service we offer only in India. Equations, calculation chains and observation tables are written on a shared screen and saved, which turns each session into revision material rather than a conversation that evaporates.

At a glance

  • Qualitative analysis is the cheapest mark in the subject: usually two sessions
  • Mole calculations are the most consequential, because the chain runs through the paper
  • Organic chemistry is a structured memory load, faster to fix than students expect
  • Cambridge 0620 and Pearson 4CH1 are different specifications
  • UAE candidates sit the June and November series, not the India-only Feb/March one
  • Sessions run over live video on Gulf Standard Time; no UAE home visits
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Chemistry sits inside a longer route through a Dubai school, and the efficient purchase differs by stage because the arithmetic underneath the subject is built years earlier.

KS3Ages 11-14 · Years 7-9

Years 7 to 9, before the course

The years in which proportional reasoning is secured or not. Moles, concentration, percentage yield and empirical formula questions are all ratio problems, and a student who is not fluent with ratio and with converting between grams, kilograms and cubic centimetres will lose chemistry marks for two years without the cause ever being named.

Dubai families usually first think about chemistry help in Year 10 or later. The cheapest useful intervention is earlier and does not look like chemistry: a short block on ratio, unit conversion and rearrangement in Year 9. It sits comfortably at the lower published rate bands because the job is explanation and repetition rather than criteria-level marking.

Y10Ages 14-15 · Year 10

Year 10, the content year

Most Dubai schools cover the bulk of the syllabus in Year 10: states of matter, atoms and bonding, stoichiometry, electrochemistry, acids and bases, the periodic table and an introduction to organic chemistry. Practical work happens here, which is where the skills tested by both practical routes are built whether or not the student notices at the time.

Keep the returned topic tests. Dubai schools assess as they teach, and a sequence of marked topic tests is a precise and free map of which chemistry topics are weak, available months before any mock. Families who bring that sequence to a first session leave it with a ranked plan instead of a diagnosis still in progress.

Y11Ages 15-16 · Year 11

Year 11, the examination year

Revision, mocks and the series. The content has been taught once, so the work becomes ranking: which of the remaining weaknesses returns the most marks per hour. Organic chemistry and qualitative analysis both move quickly at this stage; conceptual gaps in bonding and energetics move slowly and should be weighed accordingly.

Dubai mock windows run from roughly late November to February depending on the school. A marked chemistry mock is the most useful planning document of the two years because it separates recall losses from calculation losses, and those need different sessions. Acting in January leaves months; waiting until spring converts ranking into triage.

POSTAges 16-17 · Year 12

After IGCSE: A Level and IB Diploma chemistry

The IGCSE chemistry grade and tier decide whether A Level Chemistry or IB Chemistry at Higher Level is realistic, and both courses assume the stoichiometry introduced at IGCSE is fluent rather than familiar. Students who passed IGCSE by memorising sequences rather than understanding the mole concept find the first term of either course unexpectedly hard.

Dubai families often have A Levels, the IB Diploma and American pathways available within a few kilometres, with different chemistry entry requirements. Deciding the likely post-16 route during Year 10, then working backwards to the tier and grade needed, is better planning than choosing after results when the options have narrowed.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Chemistry requests from Dubai families usually arrive with maths or another science attached, because the weaknesses are shared. These are the subjects most often bundled with an IGCSE chemistry enquiry.

Chemistry

Cambridge 0620 Core and Extended

Multiple choice and theory papers plus a practical route, covering particles, bonding, stoichiometry, electrochemistry, acids and bases, the periodic table, metals and organic chemistry. Marks are lost on the mole chain, on unbalanced equations and on observation recall.

Chemistry

Pearson Edexcel 4CH1

Two written papers with practical skills assessed inside them rather than through a separate practical examination. Content overlaps heavily with Cambridge, but question style and mark allocation differ enough that past papers must match the specification.

Mathematics

Cambridge 0580 and Pearson 4MA1

The arithmetic underneath chemistry. Ratio, proportion, unit conversion and rearrangement are maths skills assessed in a chemistry paper, and a student losing marks in both subjects usually has one weakness rather than two.

Physics

Cambridge 0625 and Pearson 4PH1

Shares the calculation discipline and the practical skills. Students who carry units through working in physics tend to do the same in chemistry, and students who do not lose the same marks in both papers for the same reason.

Biology

Cambridge 0610 and Pearson 4BI1

The third science on a triple-award timetable. Enzyme and respiration content leans on chemistry concepts, and students taking all three sciences need their practical and revision load coordinated rather than left to collide.

Combined or Co-ordinated Sciences

Cambridge 0654 and 0973

The route many Dubai students take instead of three separate sciences, with a reduced chemistry subset. Past-paper practice must come from the combined syllabus, because questions on excluded content waste revision time.

Additional Mathematics

Cambridge 0606

Taken by stronger candidates and genuinely helpful for chemistry, since the algebraic fluency it builds removes most of the difficulty in stoichiometric rearrangement. It is also a real extra load in an examination year.

Environmental Management

Cambridge 0680

Overlaps with the chemistry of the atmosphere, water treatment and resource use. Students taking both can anchor abstract chemistry in applications, which helps with the extended-answer questions that ask for explanation in context.

Food and Nutrition

Cambridge 0648

An unexpected but real overlap in organic chemistry, nutrients and reaction conditions. The habit of recording a method precisely transfers directly to both practical routes in chemistry.

Design and Technology

Cambridge 0445

Shares materials content and the discipline of specifying a process step by step. That discipline is exactly what the alternative-to-practical paper rewards when it asks a candidate to criticise somebody else's method.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Chemistry support is worth buying in ranked order, which produces three natural shapes. All of them run over live video on Gulf Standard Time rather than at a Dubai address.

Recall blocks for the fixed tables

Two or three sessions on the material that is pure recall and appears predictably: cation and anion tests with their observations, gas tests, flame colours, solubility rules and the reactivity series. The student builds their own tables rather than being handed one, because a table you wrote is a table you remember. The cheapest marks in the subject sit here.

  • Student writes the tables; nothing is handed over ready-made
  • Tested cold at the start of each subsequent session
  • Observations learned as sentences, since that is how marks are awarded
  • Two or three sessions and then it is finished

Calculation chain work

The mole concept and everything downstream of it: mass to moles, mole ratio from a balanced equation, limiting reagent, concentration, percentage yield, empirical formula. This is taught as one chain rather than as separate topics, because the failure is always a broken link and students cannot see which link broke.

  • Taught as a single chain, not as a list of topics
  • Every step written out, because method marks exist
  • Units carried through each line to catch conversion errors
  • Timed past-paper calculations from the correct specification

Practical paper preparation by route

Separate preparation depending on whether the school entered the practical test or the alternative-to-practical paper, or a Pearson specification where practical skills sit in the written papers. The alternative paper is highly tutorable; laboratory technique is not, and we say so rather than pretending.

  • Route confirmed with the school before any preparation
  • Alternative-to-practical worked through past papers of that paper
  • Tables, plotting, gradients and anomalous results drilled
  • Method criticism practised as written technique

The tutors below cover IGCSE Chemistry across Cambridge 0620 and Pearson Edexcel 4CH1, at both tiers, including the practical and alternative-to-practical routes. Matching begins with the syllabus code, the tier and which practical paper the school has entered, since those three facts decide what the revision should contain.

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

Chemistry interventions ranked by marks per dirham

A family with a limited budget needs a ranking, not a menu. The table below lists the interventions available in IGCSE chemistry, the number of sessions each usually takes, the cost at a mid-market published rate, and an honest note on what it returns. The ranking reflects what we see on marked papers from Dubai schools rather than what is pleasant to teach.

Recall of the qualitative analysis tables comes first because the cost is tiny and the questions are predictable. Tests for cations and anions, gas tests and flame colours appear reliably, the answers are fixed, and the only reason students lose these marks is that nobody made them learn the table properly. Two sessions and a cold test at the start of each session afterwards.

The mole chain comes second, and it is second rather than first only because it takes longer. Its value is that it runs through the entire paper: stoichiometry, concentration, yield, empirical formula and electrolysis calculations all depend on the same links. A student with a broken link loses marks in five separate question types and experiences it as five separate weaknesses.

Bonding and structure comes near the bottom, which surprises people. It is the most interesting part of the subject and the most frequently requested, and improvement in it is slow because it is genuinely conceptual. A family with eight sessions to spend should not spend them here. A family with thirty can afford to, and will enjoy it more.

02

The mole chain, and why students experience one break as five problems

  • Check the balanced equation first; a wrong ratio ruins correct arithmetic
  • Convert units before starting, and carry them through every line
  • Write every step, because method marks survive an arithmetic slip
  • Limiting reagent is a reasoning step, not a calculation step
  • Concentration questions mix cubic centimetres and cubic decimetres constantly
  • One broken link presents to the student as five separate weaknesses

Stoichiometry is taught as a series of topics and examined as a single chain. A candidate reads a mass, converts it to moles, uses the balanced equation to find a mole ratio, converts back to a mass or a volume or a concentration, and answers. Every quantitative question in the subject is some version of that path, and a weakness at any point produces failure at the end.

What makes this diagnostically awkward is that the student cannot see where the break is. They know they got the answer wrong. They do not know whether the error was the conversion, the balancing, the ratio or the final step, so the experience is of chemistry calculations being generally impossible. A tutor reading a worked attempt can locate the break in thirty seconds, which is why a marked script with working shown is worth more than any amount of discussion.

The commonest break is the balanced equation. If the equation is wrong the ratio is wrong and everything downstream is wrong, however competent the arithmetic. Balancing is cheap to fix and should always be checked first. The second commonest is unit conversion: grams and kilograms, cubic centimetres and cubic decimetres, concentration expressed per cubic decimetre while the volume is given in cubic centimetres. Carrying units through every line catches it automatically.

The third is the limiting reagent, where students calculate moles of both reactants and then use the wrong one. That is a reasoning step rather than an arithmetic one and it needs explicit practice rather than more worked examples. Four or five sessions covering the whole chain, with every step written out and units carried, usually converts five apparent problems back into one solved one.

03

Qualitative analysis: the fixed tables that pay immediately

Qualitative analysis is the most reliably winnable part of IGCSE chemistry and the part most often left half-learned. The questions ask what is observed when a named reagent is added to a solution containing a particular ion, and the answers are fixed. There is nothing to work out. A student who knows the table scores and a student who half-knows it writes white precipitate and hopes.

The detail is where the marks sit. Adding sodium hydroxide solution to a copper salt gives a light blue precipitate that is insoluble in excess; to iron two it gives a green precipitate; to iron three a red-brown one; to zinc or aluminium a white precipitate that dissolves in excess to give a colourless solution; to calcium a white precipitate that does not dissolve in excess. The distinction between insoluble in excess and soluble in excess is the entire point of several questions, and students who learned only the first colour lose half the available marks.

Anion tests are equally fixed. A carbonate effervesces with dilute acid and the gas turns limewater milky. Acidified silver nitrate gives a white precipitate with chloride, cream with bromide, yellow with iodide. Acidified barium chloride gives a white precipitate with sulfate. Nitrate gives ammonia on warming with sodium hydroxide and aluminium. Gas tests and flame colours are shorter lists still.

The way to learn them is to write them. A student who constructs their own table, in their own layout, and is tested cold at the start of the next three sessions, will hold it. A student handed a printed table files it and never reads it again. This is also why no tutoring service should be distributing awarding-body material: the student building their own reference from the specification learns more than the student given a shortcut, and the material belongs to the awarding body in any case.

IGCSE CHEMISTRY QUALITATIVE ANALYSIS - OBSERVATIONS THAT CARRY MARKS

04

Organic chemistry: a memory load with a shape

Students describe organic chemistry as the part they cannot remember, which is accurate and fixable. It is a memory load, but it is a structured one, and once the structure is visible the volume shrinks dramatically. Three sessions is the usual cost, and the return is a section of the paper that was previously left blank.

The structure is the homologous series. Alkanes, alkenes, alcohols, carboxylic acids and esters each have a general formula, a characteristic functional group, a naming pattern and a small set of reactions. Students who learn them as five separate lists of facts have five times the work of students who learn the pattern and then the differences. The naming system in particular is algorithmic rather than arbitrary, and once a student can name a branched chain confidently, half the difficulty disappears.

The reaction set is also short. Combustion, cracking, addition of bromine across a double bond and the test it provides, hydration to an alcohol, fermentation, oxidation of an alcohol to a carboxylic acid, esterification. Each one has conditions that are examinable and routinely forgotten: catalyst, temperature, whether the reaction needs acid. Learning the conditions alongside the reaction, rather than afterwards, is the difference between a mark and most of the marks.

Polymerisation finishes the section and carries predictable questions about repeat units and about the drawing conventions for addition and condensation polymers. The drawing is where marks go missing, usually through bonds left dangling incorrectly or brackets omitted. That is mechanical and worth ten minutes of explicit practice rather than being left to chance on the day.

Cambridge 0620, Pearson 4CH1 and the practical routes

Two specifications dominate IGCSE chemistry entries in Dubai and they are not interchangeable. Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry 0620 is widely used across the emirate's Cambridge schools. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Chemistry 4CH1 is the main alternative. Content overlap is substantial, which is exactly why families assume the past papers are interchangeable, and the question style and practical treatment differ enough that they are not.

The practical element is the sharpest difference. Cambridge separates it into its own paper: either a practical test in a laboratory or an alternative-to-practical written paper. Pearson assesses practical skills inside the written papers. A Cambridge student entered for the alternative paper needs to read other people's experiments, identify variables, criticise methods and interpret data on paper, which is a written skill and highly tutorable. A student entered for the practical test needs laboratory technique, which is built at school.

Tiering is the second difference that affects revision directly. Cambridge divides into Core and Extended with supplement content examined only at Extended, and the grade range differs. A Core candidate revising Extended material is spending time on content they will not meet; an Extended candidate revising only Core material is leaving examinable topics untouched. Combined or Co-ordinated Sciences routes reduce the content again.

So the screening questions are specific: which syllabus code, which tier, which practical paper. A tutor who talks about chemistry generally rather than asking those three is working from assumptions, and assumptions are what produce a term of revision aimed at the wrong examination. Confirm with the school and check the awarding body's own syllabus page rather than relying on summaries, which are abundant and frequently out of date.

The UAE exam series, and what a late start can still achieve

Cambridge International runs IGCSE, O Level and International A Level examinations in a June series and a November series, with Primary and Lower Secondary Checkpoint tests in March, May and October. The February and March series is offered to India only, which means a UAE candidate sits June or November, and any guidance quoting a February entry deadline is written for a different country. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May and June and again in November.

The November series changes what a late diagnosis can achieve. A Dubai student whose January mock is well below target can compress work into the months before the summer, or plan properly for November with several additional months. For chemistry specifically the second option is often materially better, because the mole chain takes time to rebuild and compressing it tends to produce memorised procedures rather than understanding.

Entry deadlines sit months before the papers, and that is the administrative fact that catches families. For a sense of the cycle, Pearson's November International GCSE timetable in the current series runs from late October to 19 November 2026, with results reaching students in January; November 2025 results landed on 22 January 2026, and June 2026 results reached centres on 19 August 2026 and students on 20 August 2026.

One warning that matters for UAE candidates. Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones and states that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for your zone, warning that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an examination after using the wrong one. Revise from the timetable the school issued and check the awarding body's live timetable page rather than a restated version found elsewhere.

Online chemistry tuition against the in-home market in Dubai

Chemistry involves writing equations and working through calculation chains, which is work that suits a shared screen. Both parties write, the working is saved, and a calculation attempted in October can be reopened in April. The same work in an exercise book is somewhere in the house by revision season, which is a small thing that compounds across two years.

The in-home premium in Dubai is quantifiable. Bestimate puts home visits at AED 180 to 350 and market home tutors at AED 200 to 500, against AED 150 to 300 for a qualified online subject tutor. Advertised monthly packages run AED 799 for eight online sessions against AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour in-home visits. For a ranked plan, eight shorter contacts a month fit better than four long ones, because each ranked item should finish with a timed question and a cold re-test later.

There is a specification argument as well. Two awarding bodies, two tiers and two practical routes produce several combinations, and the right tutor knows your child's. The set of chemistry tutors within a twenty-minute drive of a particular Dubai community who match that exact combination may be small, especially for the alternative-to-practical paper where specific past-paper familiarity does most of the work.

The honest limit should be stated. Laboratory technique is built at school in the laboratory, and no remote session replaces handling apparatus. A tutor in your kitchen does not replace it either. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE in any case; that service is part of our India offering only, and chemistry support here runs one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

What a Dubai family should establish before paying

The screening questions are short. Which syllabus code and tier is my child entered for. Which practical paper. What does the marked script show as the top three losses, ranked. What would the first four sessions cover, in order. A tutor who answers all four without hedging is working from evidence; one who discusses chemistry in general is guessing, and guessing at AED 250 an hour is expensive.

The fifth question concerns the permit. Any individual providing private tuition in the UAE needs the MoHRE private tuition work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023. It is granted free of charge for two years, and eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private-sector employees, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18 and university students. MoHRE's own service page lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time, and warns that tutoring without one attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws.

Be sceptical of outcome claims in this segment particularly, because chemistry is often sold to families planning medical applications and the pressure makes exaggeration profitable. No provider can guarantee a grade. Percentages about how many students improved are meaningless without the number of students, the date and the method, and several ranking pages in this market publish exactly such figures alongside self-asserted star ratings.

Finally, a note on materials. Syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes and grade boundary tables belong to the awarding bodies. The correct behaviour from any tutoring service is to reference them and link to the official source, not to distribute copies. A provider handing over material they do not own is telling you something about the rest of their practice.

Where we tutor

Dubai communities IGCSE chemistry requests come from

Chemistry enquiries arrive from across the emirate, and what differs between communities is which specification the nearby schools use and how late in the course families typically ask for help.

Al Barsha and Dubai Science Park

Several British-curriculum schools within a short radius using more than one specification between them. Chemistry enquiries here often involve a student working from past papers belonging to the other awarding body entirely.

Umm Suqeim and Al Manara

Villa communities feeding established science departments with short commutes. Requests tend to arrive in Year 10 with marked topic tests in hand, which makes the ranking exercise quick and the session count small.

Mirdif and Al Warqa

Large family neighbourhoods far from the western school corridor. The travel component inside an in-home chemistry quote is substantial here, and chemistry suits a shared screen where equations and calculation chains are written and saved.

Al Qusais and Al Nahda

A sizeable IGCSE population with many families aiming at medical and pharmacy routes. Enquiries frequently concern tier placement, because a Core entry limits what follows at A Level and in the IB Diploma.

Arabian Ranches and Dubai Sports City

Villa communities where sport takes the early evening, so chemistry sessions sit late. Short frequent slots suit topic ranking better than one long block, since each item should close with a timed question.

Jumeirah Village Triangle and Al Furjan

Dense, fast-growing housing with siblings often at different schools. One household can genuinely need two sets of chemistry past papers and two different practical-route preparations.

Dubai Hills Estate and Al Quoz

Newer communities with growing secondary cohorts, where families often plan a year ahead. The useful conversation here is Year 9 ratio and unit work, which is the cheapest chemistry intervention available anywhere in the course.

Al Nahda and Al Twar

Established eastern housing with long-standing science provision and families whose older children sat the same examinations. That makes the specification-change question worth asking explicitly rather than assuming continuity.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Get three facts from the school

Syllabus code, tier, and which practical paper your child is entered for, all in writing. Revision shape depends on all three, and a tutor who does not ask for them is building a plan on assumptions.

  2. 02

Send marked work with the working visible

A mock or a sequence of Year 10 topic tests. For chemistry the working matters more than the mark, because a wrong answer in a calculation only tells you which link in the mole chain broke if the steps are on the page.

  3. 03

Agree a ranked list, not a syllabus sweep

Qualitative analysis tables first because they are cheapest, then equation balancing, then the mole chain, then organic chemistry. Bonding theory last. A ranked list spends a limited budget in the right order.

  4. 04

Run short sessions over live video

Two shorter slots a week beat one long block, because each ranked item should end with a timed question and be re-tested cold later. Sessions sit around the Dubai school day, mandatory subject lessons, sport and prayer times.

Re-test cold, then cross items off

Observation tables tested cold at the start of each session; calculation chains re-tested from the correct past papers every few weeks. Items leave the list or the plan changes. Nothing stays on the list indefinitely by default.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Ranked by value, not by interest

Qualitative analysis first because two sessions buys predictable marks; bonding theory last because it is slow to move. Most providers sell the opposite order, because conceptual chemistry is more enjoyable to teach and discuss.

The observation tables are on the page

Precipitate colours, solubility in excess, halide tests, carbonate tests. Published rather than summarised away, because the distinction between insoluble and soluble in excess is the whole point of several questions.

The mole chain treated as one thing

Students experience one broken link as five separate weaknesses, which is why they buy five topics of tutoring. Teaching the chain as a chain, with working written and units carried, converts five problems back into one.

Specification and practical route named

Cambridge 0620 and Pearson 4CH1 differ, Core and Extended differ, and the practical test and alternative paper need different preparation entirely. Exactly one syllabus code appears across the whole researched competitor cluster.

The laboratory limit stated honestly

Practical technique is built at school with real apparatus, and no remote session replaces it. A tutor in your kitchen does not replace it either. What is tutorable is everything around it: tables, plotting, gradients, method criticism.

No grade guarantees

Chemistry is often bought under pressure by families planning medical applications, which makes exaggeration profitable here. No outcome is guaranteed and no percentage about other students appears on this page without a method behind it.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

If we can only afford a few chemistry sessions, what should they cover?+

The qualitative analysis tables first. Cation and anion tests, gas tests and flame colours are pure recall with fixed answers, they appear predictably in the papers, and two sessions plus cold re-testing usually settles them. Next, equation balancing, because a wrong equation ruins every calculation downstream. Then the mole chain. Bonding and structure should come last: it is the most interesting part of the subject, the most frequently requested, and the slowest to improve, which makes it a poor use of a small budget.

Why does my child get every mole calculation wrong?+

Usually one broken link in a chain rather than a general inability. Every quantitative chemistry question follows the same path: mass to moles, mole ratio from the balanced equation, back to mass or volume or concentration. The student knows the answer was wrong and cannot see which step failed, so it feels like five separate weaknesses. A tutor reading working that shows each step locates the break in seconds. The commonest break is the balanced equation; the second is unit conversion between cubic centimetres and cubic decimetres.

What do the sodium hydroxide precipitate colours actually test?+

The colour identifies the cation and the behaviour in excess discriminates between groups. Copper two gives a light blue precipitate insoluble in excess; iron two green and iron three red-brown, both insoluble in excess; zinc and aluminium give a white precipitate that dissolves in excess to a colourless solution; calcium gives a white precipitate that does not dissolve. Students who memorised only the first colour lose the marks attached to the second half of the observation, which is frequently where the discriminating mark sits.

Which chemistry syllabus does my child's Dubai school use?+

Ask the school, because it decides which past papers are useful. Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry 0620 and Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Chemistry 4CH1 are both widely used in the emirate, and Co-ordinated or Combined Sciences routes cover a reduced chemistry subset. The content overlap is large enough to make families assume the papers are interchangeable, and the question style, mark allocation and practical treatment differ enough that they are not. Get the code and the tier in writing.

Does anyone come to our home in Dubai for chemistry lessons?+

No. IB Gram runs no home visits anywhere in the UAE; in-home tutoring is a service we offer only in India. Chemistry support for Dubai families is one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, with equations, calculation chains and observation tables written on a shared screen and saved, so work done in October is still available during revision. The in-home market here is real and quoted at AED 180 to 500 an hour with the tutor's travel inside the rate.

How long does organic chemistry take to learn properly?+

About three sessions, which is less than students expect, because the volume shrinks once the structure is visible. Alkanes, alkenes, alcohols, carboxylic acids and esters each have a general formula, a functional group, a naming pattern and a short reaction set. Learned as five separate fact lists it is five times the work. The reaction conditions are the part most often dropped: cracking needs heat and a catalyst, fermentation needs yeast and warmth without air, esterification needs an acid catalyst.

Is there a practical exam for IGCSE chemistry in Dubai?+

It depends on the entry. Cambridge offers a practical test sat in a laboratory and an alternative-to-practical written paper, and the school chooses. Pearson's International GCSE Chemistry assesses practical skills inside the written papers rather than separately. The two Cambridge routes need different preparation: the test needs laboratory technique built at school, while the alternative paper needs the written ability to read someone else's experiment, identify variables and criticise a method. Ask the school which paper appears on the entry.

Can a tutor help with the chemistry practical test?+

Partly, and the limit should be stated plainly. Handling apparatus, measuring carefully and working safely are built at school in the laboratory, and no remote session replaces that. What a tutor can do is drill everything that surrounds it and carries a real share of the marks: designing a results table, significant figures, plotting, drawing a line of best fit, calculating a gradient with units, identifying an anomalous result and explaining what to do about it.

What does Core and Extended mean for chemistry revision?+

Extended covers the full Cambridge syllabus including supplement content and carries the upper grade range; Core covers reduced content and is capped below the top grades. For revision the consequence is immediate: a Core candidate working through supplement material is spending time on content that will not appear, and an Extended candidate revising only Core material is leaving examinable topics untouched. The tier is set by the school from two years of assessment evidence, and any conversation about it belongs in Year 10.

When are IGCSE chemistry exams held for UAE students?+

Cambridge International runs IGCSE in a June series and a November series, and UAE candidates sit those two. The February and March series is offered to India only, so advice quoting a February entry deadline is written for another country. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May and June and again in November. Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones and warns that candidates must use the correct zone timetable, so always revise from the version the school issued.

Should a weak chemistry mock mean switching to the November series?+

It is worth asking the school rather than assuming. Chemistry is a subject where compressing the mole chain into a few weeks tends to produce memorised procedures rather than understanding, and procedures fail when a question is phrased unfamiliarly. Several extra months before a November sitting often produces a materially better grade. The decision affects entries and post-16 applications so it belongs with the school, but it exists, and a compressed revision programme sold without mentioning it is incomplete advice.

Is my child's chemistry problem really a maths problem?+

Often, and it is worth checking before buying chemistry sessions. Moles, concentration, percentage yield and empirical formula questions are proportional reasoning with chemical labels, and unit conversion causes more failures than chemical understanding does. The tell is a marked script where the chemistry reasoning is sound and the arithmetic or the rearrangement breaks down. A short block on ratio, conversion and rearrangement is cheaper than separate tutors for chemistry, physics and maths working around the same gap.

What does IGCSE chemistry tutoring cost in Dubai?+

Published market rates put a qualified online subject tutor at roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour, with specialist exam-year support at AED 200 to 450 and above on Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table. Unitors lists IGCSE from AED 150 and TutorChase quotes AED 270. In-home visits are quoted at AED 180 to 500 with travel inside the rate. At the floor, Tutopiya advertises from AED 33 to 52 and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65. Those are the providers' own figures, read in October 2026.

Should a tutor give us past papers and mark schemes?+

No, and a provider who does is worth questioning. Syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes and grade boundary tables belong to the awarding bodies, and the correct behaviour from a tutoring service is to reference them and point at the official source rather than distribute copies. There is also a learning argument: a student who builds their own observation tables and reference sheets from the specification retains far more than one handed a finished set, which is why we ask students to write them.

What if no chemistry tutor matches our specification and route?+

We say so rather than substituting quietly. Two awarding bodies, two tiers and two practical routes produce several combinations, and a specific match on the alternative-to-practical paper in the weeks after mock results can be narrower than families expect. The options are a start date in the future, a tutor who covers the content but not that exact route for interim recall and calculation work, or a recommendation to wait until demand eases. Families should be told which applies.

Spend the first four sessions in the right order

Get the syllabus code, the tier and the practical paper from the school, then send marked work with the working visible. The free trial session turns that into a ranked list: the observation tables first because they are the cheapest marks available, equation balancing next, then the mole chain, with bonding theory last. A ranked list spends a limited budget where it returns most, and it can be crossed off as it goes. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time; home visits are not part of our UAE service.
