IGCSE Biology Tutor in Dubai

An IGCSE biology tutor in Dubai should be able to name your child's paper map before teaching anything. Cambridge 0610 and Pearson Edexcel 4BI1 assess practical skills differently, tier differently and weight their papers differently, and the single theory paper is half the Cambridge grade. This page sets out what each component asks, where Dubai scripts lose marks, and what one session actually fixes. Lessons run one-to-one on live video, on Gulf Standard Time.

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

The paper map comes before the biology

Two questions settle most of what an IGCSE biology plan should contain, and neither is about biology. Which board, and which tier. Cambridge IGCSE Biology 0610 is tiered: Core candidates sit one multiple-choice paper and one theory paper, Extended candidates sit the harder versions of both, and all candidates sit either a practical test or an alternative-to-practical written paper. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Biology 4BI1 is untiered and sets two written papers, the longer running two hours and the shorter one hour fifteen, with practical skills assessed inside them rather than separately.

The consequences are immediate. A Cambridge student has a separate twenty per cent of their grade sitting in a paper that tests experimental skills barely present in the content list: describing a method, identifying a control variable, plotting to a sensible scale, reading a result from a table and spotting an anomaly. A Pearson student has no such paper and instead meets those skills embedded in ordinary structured questions. Those two students, nominally doing IGCSE biology in the same Dubai year group, need different revision weeks.

The second thing the paper map tells you is where the weight is. In Cambridge 0610 the theory paper carries fifty per cent on its own. Most revision in Dubai is organised by topic, which is the wrong axis: a student who spends equal effort on every topic while half the grade sits in one paper's question style has allocated against the wrong thing. The honest plan starts from the component weightings and works back to topics. That reordering is free, it takes ten minutes, and it is the single change most likely to make the next three months of revision count for something.

What a session fixes in this subject is unusually predictable. Biology is content-heavy and calculation-light, so lost marks concentrate in three repeatable categories: the command term was misread, the data was understood and not quoted, or a precise term was replaced by a correct paraphrase. All three are visible on a marked script within a fortnight and all three are habits rather than knowledge gaps, which is why a marking-led plan moves biology marks faster than a teaching-led one, and why the first month should look more like an audit than a course.

Lessons are delivered online, one-to-one, over live video. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service offered only in India. For IGCSE biology that is a practical advantage: a Dubai family in Mirdif or Al Furjan gets a tutor who has taught their specific specification and component rather than whichever science tutor is within a short drive, and the marked scripts accumulate as files that can be compared across a term rather than disappearing into a folder.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

IGCSE biology sits in the middle of a longer sequence, and the stage either side of it changes what a session should contain. These are the four points that matter for a Dubai family.

KS3Ages 11-14 · Years 7-9

Key Stage 3 science, Years 7 to 9

No external assessment, which is why biology habits form unchecked. The specific carry-over problems are vocabulary imprecision and answering every question as a description, both of which are tolerated in Key Stage 3 marking and penalised from the first IGCSE paper onward.

Several Dubai British-curriculum schools begin IGCSE content in Year 9, so a student transferring in from a school that did not can arrive in Year 10 a term behind on content nobody flags. A diagnostic paper on arrival settles it in an hour.

Y10Ages 14-15 · Year 10

IGCSE Biology, Year 10

Roughly the first sixty per cent of the specification, with the tier decision still open on Cambridge entries. The right year to establish command-term discipline and to begin the practical-skills work, because both are habits and both take weeks rather than days to shift.

Dubai's academic year runs late August to late June or early July with a long December break, which gives three uneven teaching blocks. The end-of-Year-10 mock usually falls in the shortest of them, which is worth knowing when reading its result.

Y11Ages 15-16 · Year 11

IGCSE Biology, Year 11

Remaining content, mocks and the series. Tutoring narrows to the theory paper's question style, the practical component, and the three or four topics still unreliable. A marking-led block here produces more movement than content teaching, because by Year 11 most of the content has been met at least once.

UAE candidates sit the Cambridge June and November series; the February/March series is offered to India only. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs May/June and November. Dubai schools enter overwhelmingly for the summer window with November kept as the resit route.

POST-16Ages 16-19 · Years 12-13

A Level or IB Diploma biology

The IGCSE grade is the entry currency, and Dubai sixth forms typically ask for grade 6 or 7 to continue a science. What transfers best into Diploma or A Level biology is not content but technique: command-term discipline and data handling are the same skills at a higher level.

UAE Ministry of Education equivalency on the British track asks for five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic Education excluded from the five, plus one A Level at E or two AS Levels at E. The process is the ministry's and tutoring is not required for it.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

IGCSE biology is taught by topic and examined by paper, and a plan needs both views. These are the topics where Dubai scripts lose most, with what the loss actually is.

Characteristics and classification of living organisms

Core and Extended

Early content treated as easy and marked strictly. Marks go to the precise feature named in the specification rather than a reasonable description, which makes it the clearest early illustration of why paraphrase does not score.

Cells, movement in and out of cells

Core and Extended

Diffusion, osmosis and active transport. Osmosis explanations are where most Dubai students first meet a mark scheme that requires direction, gradient and the word used correctly in the same sentence. A partially correct explanation scores nothing here.

Enzymes and biological molecules

Core and Extended

Enzyme action, specificity, and the effect of temperature and pH. The topic generates the most common data-based question in the subject, and the loss is reliably the same: the trend described, the figure never quoted.

Plant nutrition and transport

Core and Extended, extended at Extended tier

Photosynthesis, limiting factors, transpiration and translocation. Limiting-factor graphs are a graph-reading skill before they are a biology skill, and students who cannot say which factor is limiting at a named point on the curve lose marks they understood.

Human nutrition, respiration and gas exchange

Core and Extended

A large body of content with precise terminology throughout. Mostly a retrieval problem, and the clearest case where spaced self-testing rather than more explanation is the right intervention.

Transport in humans and coordination

Core and Extended, substantially extended at Extended tier

Circulation, the heart, homeostasis, nerves and hormones. Explanation questions here want a causal chain in order, and scripts lose marks for giving the right components in the wrong sequence.

Inheritance and variation

Core and Extended, substantially extended at Extended tier

Genetic crosses, variation, selection and at Extended level more demanding inheritance problems. The one biology topic where a student can be defeated by the logic rather than the volume, which makes it worth dedicated session time.

Organisms and their environment

Core and Extended

Food chains, nutrient cycles, population growth and human impact. Marks go to answers that name a specific organism or process from the stimulus rather than giving a general ecological statement.

Experimental skills and investigations

Assessed in Cambridge Paper 5 or 6, embedded in Edexcel papers

Method description, variable control, measurement, recording, plotting and anomaly identification. Twenty per cent of the Cambridge grade sits here and almost none of it appears in the content list, which is why it is the least revised component in the subject.

Command terms and terminology

Not a topic, and the largest single source of loss

State, describe, explain, suggest, compare and calculate each buy something different, and biology mark schemes frequently require the exact term rather than a correct paraphrase. One habit, worth marks across every topic simultaneously.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes of work cover almost every IGCSE biology need, and the right one depends on which of the three loss categories the marked script shows.

Weekly theory-paper clinic

Sixty minutes a week built around a theory-paper question set sat between sessions and marked to the published scheme before the next. Twenty minutes reviewing the marked work with every loss tagged, thirty teaching what the tags revealed, ten setting the next set. The Cambridge theory paper carries half the grade, so this is where most hours should go.

  • 60 minutes, live video, one named specification per slot
  • Question set marked before the session, never during it
  • Losses tagged by command term, data use or terminology precision
  • Annotated script and tag summary to the parent the same evening

Practical-skills block

Four to six sessions on the experimental component: method description, variable control, measurement and recording, plotting to a sensible scale, reading results from a table, and identifying anomalies. On Cambridge entries this is twenty per cent of the grade; on Pearson entries the same skills appear inside the written papers.

  • Four to six sessions, with a stated end rather than open-ended
  • Plotting and anomaly identification done live on a shared screen
  • Method descriptions written and marked against the published criteria
  • Matched to whether the entry is the practical test or the written alternative

Retrieval support for content volume

Short frequent self-testing against the specification statements, scored and spaced. Biology's content load is the problem it is best known for, and the fix is testing rather than explanation. A student can run this alone with a good question bank; where they will not, short supervised sessions do the job.

  • Twenty to thirty minutes, three or four times a week
  • Scored against specification statements, with the score recorded
  • Interval between repetitions increased as recall becomes reliable
  • The one part of a biology plan a student can genuinely run themselves

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

The IGCSE biology paper map, by board and tier

Cambridge IGCSE Biology 0610 is tiered and splits across three components. Core candidates sit a multiple-choice paper worth thirty per cent and a theory paper worth fifty. Extended candidates sit the harder versions of the same two, at the same weightings. All candidates then sit either a practical test or an alternative-to-practical written paper, worth twenty per cent. The tier caps the grade: Core cannot produce better than a C or 5, Extended runs the full range.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Biology 4BI1 removes the tier. One specification, two written papers — the longer running two hours and the shorter one hour fifteen — and the full grade range available to every candidate. Practical skills are assessed inside those written papers rather than in a separate component, which means there is no twenty per cent block to revise as a unit and the same skills appear distributed through ordinary structured questions.

Those differences change the plan rather than decorating it. A Cambridge student should treat the experimental component as a subject in its own right, because its content barely overlaps the biology specification and because twenty per cent of a grade is worth four or five sessions of dedicated work. A Pearson student has nothing to block-book and instead needs practical vocabulary recognised when it surfaces mid-question.

The first action for a Dubai family is therefore administrative rather than academic: ask the school's exams officer for the board, the syllabus code and, for Cambridge, which practical component the school enters. Teachers often do not have the codes to hand; exams officers always do, because entries are made from them. One email removes the largest source of wasted tutoring in this subject.

Half the Cambridge grade sits in one theory paper

  • Half the Cambridge grade sits in the theory paper's question style
  • Unfamiliar-context questions test application, not recall of the example
  • Explanation marks are allocated to steps in order, not to content present
  • Pacing across a long paper is untested until a full paper is sat

The Cambridge 0610 theory paper carries fifty per cent on its own, which makes its question style the most valuable thing a Dubai student can practise. It asks for structured written answers across the specification: short recall items, explanation chains, data interpretation from supplied tables and graphs, and questions built on an unfamiliar organism or context that the student has to reason about rather than recall.

That last category is the one most Dubai students are least ready for. A question presenting an unfamiliar plant and asking the student to suggest why a named adaptation is useful is not testing whether they have met the plant. It is testing whether they can apply a general principle to a new case, and students who revised by memorising examples read it as a question about something they were never taught. Recognising the pattern is a technique lesson, not a content one.

The explanation chain is the second. Marks in biology explanation questions are allocated to steps, in order, and a student who gives the first and third steps of a causal sequence earns less than one who gives the first and second. Scripts routinely contain all the correct biology arranged in the wrong sequence, which reads as understanding and marks as partial. Enforcing the chain structure in marking changes it inside a month.

The third is scale. A fifty per cent paper rewards stamina and pacing, and students who have only ever answered questions in ten-minute homework blocks do not know that they write well for thirty minutes and then compress. A full timed paper under conditions exposes it immediately, which is a strong argument for sitting one early in Year 10 rather than meeting the information in a Year 11 mock.

03

The practical component nobody revises

On a Cambridge entry, twenty per cent of the biology grade sits in a practical test or an alternative-to-practical written paper, and almost none of what it tests appears in the content specification. It asks the student to describe a method precisely enough to be repeated, to identify the independent, dependent and control variables, to record measurements in a correctly headed table with units, to plot points to a sensible scale with a suitable line, to identify an anomalous result and to suggest an improvement that addresses an actual limitation.

Because those skills are not content, they do not appear on a revision timetable built from the specification. Students revise topics, sit the alternative-to-practical paper having never practised plotting under time, and lose marks that had nothing to do with biology. Four to six sessions on the component is one of the highest-return purchases available in the subject, and it is almost always overlooked in favour of another pass through human transport.

The specific losses are consistent across Dubai scripts. Axes plotted without units. A scale chosen so the points occupy a quarter of the grid. A line of best fit drawn as a dot-to-dot. An anomaly circled without being excluded from any subsequent calculation. An improvement suggested as 'use more accurate equipment' where the real limitation was the number of repeats. Each of those is a mark, each is mechanical, and each is fixed by doing it wrongly once in front of someone who says so.

On a Pearson 4BI1 entry there is no separate paper, which does not mean the skills are absent. They appear inside ordinary structured questions: a method described in the stem with a flaw to identify, a table to complete, a graph to read. The plan for a Pearson student is therefore recognition rather than block revision, and the practical vocabulary needs to be as automatic as the biological terminology.

EXPERIMENTAL SKILLS: WHAT IS TESTED AND WHAT A SESSION FIXES
SkillWhat the paper asks forThe usual Dubai lossWhat one session fixes
Method descriptionEnough detail for another student to repeat itSteps described but quantities and timings omittedWriting one method, having it marked, and rewriting it
Variable controlIndependent, dependent and controlled variables namedControlled variables listed without saying how they were held constantThe phrasing that earns the mark, applied to three contexts
Recording dataA headed table with units and consistent decimal placesUnits in the cells rather than the heading; inconsistent precisionDrawing two tables correctly, under time

04

The three categories of lost mark in Dubai biology scripts

  • Command terms: one habit, marks lost across every topic at once
  • Data use: quote the figure, and answer the question actually asked
  • Terminology: a retrieval problem, fixable by self-testing at no cost
  • The three have different costs, so they should be bought separately

Mark a Dubai IGCSE biology script against the published scheme and the losses sort into three recurring categories, with very little left over. The first is the command term. State wants a fact with no justification. Describe wants observable detail. Explain wants a causal chain. Suggest wants applied reasoning on unfamiliar material. Compare wants both sides in the same sentence. Calculate wants the working shown. A student who writes a description every time loses marks on every paper simultaneously.

The second is data use. Questions built on a table or a graph require the figure to be quoted, and a biologically correct answer that cites no number scores less than a thinner answer that does. The related trap is answering 'why' where the question asked 'what the data show'. Students lose marks for giving a better answer to a question nobody asked, which is a frustrating way to lose two marks on every data question in a paper.

The third is terminology precision. Biology mark schemes frequently require a specific term rather than a correct paraphrase. A student who writes 'the substance that carries the message' when the scheme wants 'neurotransmitter' has demonstrated understanding and earned nothing. Unlike the first two categories this one is a retrieval problem, which means the fix is spaced self-testing rather than marking, and it can be run by the student alone.

Separating the three matters because they have different costs. Command-term discipline and data-use habits need someone marking against the scheme and tagging the loss, which is paid work for a limited block of six to eight sessions. Terminology precision needs testing, which is free if the student will do it. Families who buy all three as one undifferentiated weekly hour pay for a service where a question bank would have done, and skip the part that needed a specialist.

05

Core or Extended in biology specifically

On a Cambridge entry the tier caps the grade, so the decision is consequential and it is usually made by the school in the spring of Year 10 or the autumn of Year 11 on the basis of classwork. The decision should be made from marked papers at both tiers instead, and the argument for that is strongest in biology because the content difference between the tiers is unevenly distributed.

Extended biology adds depth rather than breadth in most topics, and the additions concentrate in inheritance, coordination and plant transport. A student who is comfortable across the shared content and specifically weak in genetics logic may be an Extended candidate who needs four sessions on crosses, not a Core candidate. A student whose losses are spread evenly across every topic and every question type is a different case, and for them a secure Core grade is a better outcome than an optimistic Extended entry producing a grade E.

The wrong outcome is not a Core entry. Five accredited IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or grade 3 is what the UAE Ministry of Education's British-track equivalency route asks for, with Arabic and Islamic Education excluded from that count, so a secure grade C counts. The wrong outcome is a tier chosen without marked evidence in either direction, which is what happens when the conversation is held in February with nothing on the table.

Post-16 consequence is the other input. Dubai sixth forms typically ask for grade 6 or 7 to continue a science at A Level or at Diploma Higher Level, which a Core entry cannot produce. A family for whom biology at 18 is the plan should treat the Year 10 tier conversation as a decision about Year 12, and should have marked papers from both tiers before the school's internal deadline rather than after it.

The Dubai timeline, counted backwards from the series

UAE candidates sit the Cambridge June and November series. The February/March series is offered to India only, so a Dubai family reading a March date on a tutoring site is reading another country's calendar. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs May/June and November. Dubai schools enter overwhelmingly for the summer window and keep November as the resit route for one or two subjects.

Entries are made by the school months before the papers, and on a Cambridge entry they include the tier and the practical component. That is why the tier evidence needs to exist in the spring of Year 10: once the entry is made, a change becomes an administrative negotiation rather than a decision. Ask the exams officer for the school's internal deadline rather than the board's, because the internal one is the date that actually binds a family.

Results timing sets the resit clock. Pearson's published pattern is the clearest illustration available: June 2026 results reached centres on 19 August 2026 and students on 20 August 2026, and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026, with the November 2026 final timetable running from late October to 19 November 2026. A student improving one subject therefore has a bounded window that opens the week results arrive.

One Cambridge administrative detail catches families who move. Every exam centre is allocated to one of six administrative zones, and Cambridge states it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for the centre's zone and that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong zone timetable. Revising from a timetable downloaded for a different zone is revising to the wrong clock; confirm the zone with the exams officer and work from the live official timetable.

What IGCSE biology support costs in Dubai

Biology is well supplied in this market, which keeps it off the top of the range. Published rates read in October 2026: EdFlik lists online tuition from AED 45-65 an hour and Tutopiya from AED 33-52; Unitors publishes IGCSE tuition from AED 150 and IB from AED 200; TutorChase quotes AED 270 for specialist work; the Bestimate survey puts IB and IGCSE specialists at AED 200-450 and above; BartyED publishes AED 650 for a premium named tutor. Monthly packages advertised in the market include AED 799 for eight online sessions.

The sensible allocation follows the three loss categories. Terminology precision is retrieval and can be run by the student or at the bottom tier. Command-term and data-use habits need marking against the published scheme, which is the qualified band at AED 150-300 for a block of six to eight sessions with a stated end. The practical-skills block is four to six sessions at the same band. That totals a modest number of paid hours rather than a two-year weekly commitment.

In-home provision is the comparison most Dubai families are weighing. Bestimate puts qualified in-home one-to-one at AED 180-350 an hour, with independent home tutors quoted at AED 200-500 and monthly in-home packages advertised at AED 1,599-1,799 for four two-hour visits, against AED 150-300 for comparable work online. The premium pays for a commute. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai or anywhere in the UAE; home visits are an India-only service.

No IB Gram rate card appears here, because an IGCSE biology plan is priced by board, component and hour count. The free 30-minute trial lesson, one per family and with no card details taken, is where the plan and the figure are discussed together. Every AED figure above belongs to the provider or survey that published it, and those are the bands any quote should be held against.

08

Dubai's regulatory context and the rules a tutor works inside

Dubai's private schools are regulated by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, which is responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate and inspects annually against six bands from Outstanding to Very Weak. The sector held 387,441 students across 227 private schools in 2024-25 offering 17 different curricula, with UK-curriculum provision the largest share of enrolment. Seven new private schools were approved for the 2026-27 intake, four of them UK curriculum, adding 16,846 places, and KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that private school fees in the emirate would not rise for 2026-27.

The mandatory-subject requirement shapes a Year 10 or Year 11 week more than families expect. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social and Moral studies are taught in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, with KHDA's requirements due to be implemented by the start of the 2025-26 academic year. Schools must organise separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and combined classes for the two groups are prohibited. Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit, with KHDA advising no such lesson falls below 25 minutes.

For biology that matters because retrieval practice needs several short slots a week and those slots have to exist. A Year 11 carrying eight or nine IGCSE subjects plus two or three mandatory UAE subjects has a smaller discretionary week than a revision timetable assumes, and twenty-five minutes four times a week is achievable where ninety minutes four times a week is not. For the mandatory subjects specifically, the use of different or additional content without prior permission from the Ministry of Education is prohibited, and teachers of Islamic Education and Arabic must hold the relevant approval from KHDA.

Three rules govern how a tutor works. Private tutoring requires the MoHRE private tuition work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, granted free of charge for two years and applied for through MoHRE's own service with a stated two-working-day completion time; tutoring without one carries fines and penalties under the applicable laws, with no published fine schedule. Syllabus documents, past papers and mark schemes belong to Cambridge and Pearson and should be referenced and linked rather than reproduced. And IB Gram holds no approval, accreditation, licence or partnership from KHDA, the Ministry of Education, Cambridge or Pearson, and operates no UAE office or centre.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Dubai

Online delivery means the tutor is chosen by specification rather than by distance. What the postcode changes is when a Year 10 or Year 11 can realistically sit a timed paper on a weekday.

Dubai Marina and JLT

Short commutes and apartment study space. A timed Cambridge theory paper needs an uninterrupted stretch and a clear desk, which in these buildings works better at five in the afternoon than after dinner.

Al Barsha and Dubai Hills Estate

Several large British-curriculum schools within a short radius, so Year 10 and 11 biology cohorts are setted and sets move in the spring. A student dropped a set has a tier conversation pending, and marked evidence is what makes it a discussion rather than a notification.

Arabian Ranches, Mudon and Damac Hills

Long bus routes mean little useful attention before six. Sessions here run in the evening and the timed paper is set for a weekend morning, with the marked version reviewed at the start of the next session.

Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim and Al Safa

Established schools with long-running IGCSE science cohorts and well-equipped laboratories, so students entered for the practical test rather than the alternative-to-practical paper are commoner here. That changes the component plan entirely.

Mirdif, Al Warqa and Al Qusais

A dense mix of British and Indian curriculum schools with frequent transfer between them. A Year 10 arriving from a CBSE Class 9 has met the biology content in a different order, so a specification map comes before any teaching.

Dubai Silicon Oasis and Academic City

Campus-cluster commutes make a 4.30pm start realistic, which suits practical-skills work where a graph has to be plotted and checked inside the session rather than described.

Al Furjan, Discovery Gardens and Dubai South

Newer schools with smaller Year 11 cohorts, often one teacher covering both tiers. With no parallel set to benchmark against, an independently marked theory paper is frequently the only external data a family holds.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Established Dubai British-curriculum schools

Long-running IGCSE science provision with setted cohorts, laboratory capacity for the practical test, and years of internal mock data. Families here usually want an independent mark on the theory paper rather than content teaching.

Newer British-curriculum provision

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Get the board, the code and the practical component

Email the school's exams officer for the board, the syllabus code and, on a Cambridge entry, whether the school enters the practical test or the written alternative. Those three facts set the whole plan. Teachers often do not have them to hand; exams officers always do, because entries are made from them.

  2. 02

Free 30-minute trial lesson, one per family

Live video with the matched tutor, no card details taken, no obligation. It is spent on one structured question marked live against the published scheme with the command term named and the withheld mark explained, because that shows which of the three loss categories you are actually dealing with.

  3. 03

One timed theory paper, marked and tagged

A full theory paper for the correct specification and tier, sat under time and marked to the published scheme, with every loss tagged as command term, data use or terminology. The tag distribution decides what gets bought, and it is frequently not what the family expected to buy.

  4. 04

Marking block with a stated end

Where command-term and data-use habits are the issue, six to eight sessions with every question marked before the session and the loss tagged. The block has an end date, because a habit either changes within that window or the diagnosis needs revisiting rather than extending.

  5. 05

    Practical-skills block on Cambridge entries

Four to six sessions on method description, variable control, recording, plotting and anomaly handling, done live rather than discussed. Twenty per cent of the Cambridge grade sits here and almost none of it appears on a revision timetable built from the specification.

  6. 06

Tier evidence before the school's deadline

On a Cambridge entry, papers at both tiers marked and a written recommendation with the marks attached, produced before the school's internal entry deadline. Where the evidence points to Core, the recommendation says Core, because a secure grade C beats an optimistic entry and a grade E.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The paper map comes first

Board, code, tier and practical component are confirmed before any teaching is planned, because Cambridge 0610 and Pearson 4BI1 assess practical skills in completely different places. Planning without that is the largest single source of wasted tutoring in this subject.

Losses are tagged, not just counted

Every lost mark is assigned to command term, data use or terminology precision. Those three have different fixes at different prices, and the tag distribution usually tells a family to buy less than they intended rather than more.

The practical component is treated as a component

On a Cambridge entry twenty per cent of the grade tests skills that barely appear in the content list, so it gets four to six dedicated sessions with plotting and method writing done live. Most revision timetables never touch it because it is not a topic.

Half the grade gets most of the hours

The Cambridge theory paper carries fifty per cent on its own, so the weekly session is built around its question style rather than around even topic coverage. Allocating effort by topic when the grade is decided by component is the common planning error.

Retrieval work is handed back to the student

Terminology precision is a testing problem rather than a teaching one, so it is recommended as spaced self-testing the student runs themselves or buys at the bottom tier. That is a smaller sale and the honest answer for the largest part of biology's content load.

The tier recommendation can say Core

Where two marked papers show losses spread evenly across every topic and question type, the written recommendation is Core, because a secure grade C counts toward the five subjects the Ministry of Education equivalency route requires. A page that only ever recommends Extended is selling optimism.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

What is the difference between Cambridge 0610 and Edexcel 4BI1 for IGCSE biology?+

Tiering and practical assessment. Cambridge IGCSE Biology 0610 is tiered: Core candidates sit a multiple-choice paper at thirty per cent and a theory paper at fifty, Extended candidates sit harder versions of both, and all candidates sit either a practical test or an alternative-to-practical written paper worth twenty per cent. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Biology 4BI1 is untiered, sets two written papers of two hours and one hour fifteen, and assesses practical skills inside them rather than separately. A Cambridge student has a twenty per cent block to revise as a unit; a Pearson student does not.

Which IGCSE biology paper carries the most marks?+

On a Cambridge 0610 entry, the theory paper at fifty per cent, Core or Extended. That makes its question style the most valuable thing to practise, and it is why a plan should be organised by component rather than by even topic coverage. On a Pearson 4BI1 entry the longer two-hour paper carries the larger share of the two. Either way the first planning act is to pull the weightings for the specification the school actually entered, because a revision timetable that treats every topic equally has allocated effort against the wrong axis.

What is the alternative-to-practical paper and how do you revise for it?+

It is the Cambridge written component that replaces the practical test, worth twenty per cent of the biology grade, and it tests experimental skills rather than biology content. It asks for a method described precisely enough to repeat, variables named and the way they were controlled stated, data recorded in a correctly headed table with units, points plotted to a sensible scale, an anomaly identified and an improvement that addresses a real limitation. Because none of it appears in the content specification it never reaches a topic-based revision timetable, which is why four to six dedicated sessions is high-return work.

Why does my child lose marks on IGCSE biology questions they understood?+

Three recurring reasons, and almost nothing else. The command term was misread, so a description was written where an explanation or a deduction was asked for. The data was understood but never quoted, and the mark scheme required the figure. Or a precise term was replaced with a correct paraphrase, which demonstrates understanding and earns nothing. The first two need someone marking against the published scheme and tagging the loss so the pattern becomes visible. The third needs spaced self-testing, which the student can do alone. Separating them is what stops a family overpaying for the cheap part.

How do data questions work in IGCSE biology?+

A table or a graph is supplied and the mark scheme requires the answer to refer to it. A biologically correct response that cites no number scores less than a thinner response that quotes the figure, which feels unjust and is entirely predictable once seen. The second trap is the question wording: asking what the data show is not asking why, and a student who explains the mechanism has given a better answer to a question nobody asked. Both are habits, both show up on a marked script within a fortnight, and both move quickly once tagged.

Should a Dubai student take Core or Extended IGCSE biology?+

Decide it from marked papers at both tiers rather than from a predicted grade. Extended adds depth concentrated in inheritance, coordination and plant transport, so a student who is comfortable across the shared content and specifically weak in genetics logic may be an Extended candidate needing four sessions on crosses. A student whose losses spread evenly across every topic and question type is better served by a secure Core grade. Weigh the post-16 consequence: Dubai sixth forms typically ask for grade 6 or 7 to continue a science, which a Core entry cannot produce.

Is a Core grade in IGCSE biology still useful in the UAE?+

Yes, for the equivalency route. The UAE Ministry of Education's published British-track requirement is five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic Education not counted among the five, plus one A Level at grade E or two AS Levels at the same grade. A secure grade C from a Core entry counts toward that. What a Core entry generally cannot do is support entry to A Level or Diploma Higher Level biology in a Dubai sixth form. Equivalency is a ministry process; tutoring is not required for it and does not guarantee it.

When are IGCSE biology exams held for Dubai candidates?+

Cambridge runs a June series and a November series and UAE candidates sit those two; the February/March series is offered to India only, so March dates on tutoring sites belong to another country's calendar. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs May/June and November. One administrative point matters as much as the dates: every Cambridge centre is allocated to one of six administrative zones, and Cambridge states it is essential to use the correct timetable version for the zone and that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong one.

How many IGCSE biology sessions does a Dubai student actually need?+

It depends on the tag distribution from one marked theory paper, and the total is usually modest. A command-term and data-use habit problem is six to eight sessions with a stated end, because the habit either changes inside that window or the diagnosis was wrong. The Cambridge practical component is four to six sessions. Terminology precision is retrieval work the student runs themselves at no cost. A genuine content gap across several topics is a term of weekly sessions. Buying a two-year weekly commitment before the diagnostic is how families spend without seeing marks move.

Can my child catch up on IGCSE biology content volume with more lessons?+

Lessons are the wrong instrument for a volume problem. Diploma and IGCSE biology are both content-heavy and calculation-light, so the characteristic failure is understanding material in October and being unable to retrieve it in May. Retrieval is built by testing rather than by reading or listening: twenty to thirty minutes of scored self-testing against the specification statements, three or four times a week, with the interval increasing as recall becomes reliable. It is tedious, it is the largest single lever in the subject, and it needs administration rather than subject expertise.

Do Dubai schools enter students for the practical test or the written alternative?+

Both happen in this emirate and the choice is the school's, usually driven by laboratory capacity and cohort size. Established schools with well-equipped laboratories are more likely to enter the practical test; newer schools with larger or growing cohorts more often enter the written alternative. It matters because the preparation differs: a practical test needs apparatus handling and timing in a laboratory, while the written alternative needs method writing, plotting and anomaly identification on paper. Ask the exams officer which component the school enters before buying any practical support.

How much does an IGCSE biology tutor cost in Dubai?+

Published rates read in October 2026 put budget online provision at AED 33-52 at Tutopiya and AED 45-65 at EdFlik, a qualified online subject tutor at AED 150-300 with Unitors listing IGCSE from AED 150, specialist work at AED 270 at TutorChase, IB and IGCSE specialists at AED 200-450 and above per the Bestimate survey, and premium named listings at AED 650. Monthly packages advertised include AED 799 for eight online sessions. Biology is well supplied in this market, so a family rarely needs the specialist band and should ask what the extra is for if quoted above the qualified one.

Is online IGCSE biology tuition effective for a Year 10 in Dubai?+

For the work this subject actually needs, yes. Marking against the published scheme, tagging command-term losses, plotting a graph live with the scale chosen first and writing a method to be marked all work at least as well on a shared screen, and the annotated versions are saved rather than carried away in a folder. What online delivery does not provide is a presence stopping a distracted fifteen-year-old opening another tab, which is managed structurally: sessions in a shared room, timed tasks with the camera on, and a written report that makes disengagement visible within a week.

Is a home biology tutor in Dubai better than online for IGCSE?+

The published numbers run one way. The Bestimate survey puts qualified in-home one-to-one at AED 180-350 an hour, with independent home tutors quoted at AED 200-500 and monthly in-home packages advertised at AED 1,599-1,799 for four two-hour visits, against AED 150-300 for comparable work online. Most of the gap pays for a drive at the worst traffic hour of the day. Biology is well supplied online in this market, so there is no scarcity argument for restricting the pool to driving distance. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; that is an India-only service.

What if no tutor is available for our specific IGCSE biology specification?+

You should be told, with the options named rather than a general science tutor quietly substituted. Narrow requests do run short — a specific practical component close to the series, or a board combination a school entered unusually — and the honest choices are a wait with a date attached, a tutor based outside the UAE delivering on the same live video platform and on Gulf Standard Time, or a referral elsewhere. All three beat someone planning for the wrong paper map, which in biology means revising for a practical component the student is not entered for. No competitor page in this market discloses a coverage limit.

One email, then one marked paper

Two actions settle most of an IGCSE biology plan, and neither costs anything. Email the school's exams officer for the board, the syllabus code and which practical component the school enters. Then have one timed theory paper marked against the published scheme with every loss tagged as command term, data use or terminology. The paper map says what the plan must cover; the tag distribution says what to buy and what to hand back to the student. Send both, take the free 30-minute trial lesson, and ask for a plan with a stated hour count and a stated end date.
