IGCSE English Tutor in Dubai

An IGCSE English tutor in Dubai is working on the one subject where nobody can tell you why the grade is what it is. Writing marks feel subjective to a parent and to a student, and they are not: they are awarded against published descriptors. Every session here produces a marked script or a dated draft with the band stated and the reason given, so progress across a term is a stack of documents rather than a feeling. Lessons run one-to-one on live video, on Gulf Standard Time.

  • Every piece of writing marked against published descriptors with the band stated
  • Drafts dated and versioned, so a rewrite can be compared to its predecessor
  • First Language, Second Language and Literature treated as separate specifications
  • One free 30-minute trial lesson per family, no card details taken

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

Writing marks are not opinions, and the file proves it

English is the subject where Dubai parents most often feel they cannot help. A maths script has right answers. A biology script has a mark scheme a parent can read. An English script comes back with a number, a tick or two and the word 'detail' in the margin, and nobody in the house can say what the number was for. The student concludes the grade is a matter of taste, which is the single most damaging belief available to an IGCSE English candidate, because a student who thinks marking is arbitrary has no reason to change anything.

It is not arbitrary. Reading and writing are both marked against published descriptors, and those descriptors name things: whether an answer selects relevant detail, whether a response addresses the audience the task specified, whether sentence structures vary with purpose, whether vocabulary is precise rather than ambitious. A marked script that states the band and quotes the sentence that limited it turns the subject from taste into a set of operations. That is what every session on this plan produces.

The file is built the same way every week. One task completed between sessions, marked against the published descriptors with the band stated. The first twenty minutes of the session spent on what the band required and where the script fell short. Then a rewrite of one paragraph, not the whole piece, because changing one paragraph properly teaches more than redrafting four badly. Both versions are kept and dated, so a rewrite can be compared to its predecessor rather than discussed in general terms.

The first thing the file usually shows is that the problem is not vocabulary. Dubai students frequently arrive believing they need longer words, having been told to improve their vocabulary by three successive teachers. Marked scripts almost always say something different: that the response never identified its audience, or that every paragraph does the same job, or that an answer summarised where it was asked to analyse. Those are structural diagnoses and they are actionable within a fortnight. Advice to use better words is not actionable at all, and a Dubai student who has received it three years running has learned only that the subject is impenetrable. Replacing it with a named descriptor and a quoted sentence is most of the work.

Lessons are delivered online, one-to-one, over live video. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service offered only in India. For English this is the better medium rather than a compromise: the student's own text sits on a shared screen with comments in the margin, both versions are saved, and a Dubai family in Mirdif or Dubai Hills gets a tutor who marks to the specific specification their school entered rather than whoever teaches English nearby.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

English arrives in a Dubai IGCSE classroom under several different specification names, and the stage either side of Year 11 changes what the writing work should be. These are the four points a family needs to place.

KS3Ages 11-14 · Years 7-9

Key Stage 3 English, Years 7 to 9

No external assessment, and the stage where two habits form unchecked: writing to length rather than to purpose, and treating a reading question as an invitation to retell the passage. Both are tolerated in Key Stage 3 marking and both are penalised from the first IGCSE paper.

Dubai's international schools draw from many first-language backgrounds, so a Year 9 class can contain students who need First Language English and students who need the Second Language specification. Making that judgement early matters more than any amount of early content work.

Y10Ages 14-15 · Year 10

IGCSE English, Year 10

The year to build the structural habits, because they take months rather than weeks to change. Audience, form and purpose identified before writing; paragraph planning; reading answers that select rather than retell. Also the year in which a coursework route, where a school offers one, is decided.

Dubai's academic year gives three uneven teaching blocks and a long December break. The break is a genuinely useful writing window: four consecutive mornings on one task type produces more movement than four weekly sessions spread across a term.

Y11Ages 15-16 · Year 11

IGCSE English, Year 11

Exam technique, timing and band-specific repairs. By Year 11 the writing habits are established, so the work is narrower: the band descriptor the student keeps falling just short of, the reading question type that keeps costing marks, and pacing across a two-hour paper.

UAE candidates sit the Cambridge June and November series; the February/March series is offered to India only. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs May/June and November. Dubai schools enter overwhelmingly for the summer window, with November kept as the resit route.

POST-16Ages 16-19 · Years 12-13

A Level, IB Diploma and university entry

The IGCSE English grade is widely used as an entry condition and sometimes as a language-proficiency proxy. What transfers into Diploma English A or A Level English is the structural discipline rather than content: audience awareness, method analysis and the ability to sustain an argument across an essay.

UAE Ministry of Education equivalency on the British track asks for five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic Education excluded from the five. For the American track, English proficiency is evidenced by IELTS 5, TOEFL iBT 61 or 450 in SAT reading and writing; those are the ministry's published figures.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The first question in any Dubai English enquiry is which specification, because the name 'English' covers three quite different subjects. These are the units a plan is built from.

Cambridge First Language English 0500

Reading paper and directed writing paper, 50 per cent each

Two two-hour papers of equal weight. Paper 1 tests reading through selection, summary and analysis of a writer's methods; Paper 2 tests directed writing and composition. The equal split means neither paper can be sacrificed, and most Dubai plans under-serve the reading paper.

Cambridge First Language English 0990

The 9-1 graded version of the same subject

The same assessment structure reported on the numeric scale. Worth confirming which code a school entered, because grade conversations with a school and university entry requirements are sometimes phrased in the other scale and get crossed.

Cambridge English as a Second Language 0510 and 0511

0510 with a speaking endorsement; 0511 with speaking counted in the grade

A different subject with different descriptors, not an easier version of First Language. The difference between the two codes matters practically: in one, speaking is reported separately; in the other it contributes to the overall grade.

Cambridge Literature in English 0475

Poetry and prose, drama, and an unseen or coursework component

Set texts examined up to eighteen months after they are taught, which makes a quotation bank the asset to build in Year 10. Marks go to analysis of method rather than to narration of plot, and that distinction is the whole subject.

Pearson Edexcel English Language A 4EA1

Two components, with a coursework alternative at some schools

Non-fiction texts and transactional writing in the longer paper, poetry and prose texts and imaginative writing in the shorter. The transactional writing task is the most coachable component in the specification because its requirements are explicit.

Pearson Edexcel English Literature 4ET1

Set texts and unseen poetry components

Different text lists and a different component balance from Cambridge, so a plan built for 0475 does not transfer. Confirm the texts with the school before any quotation work begins, because the wrong text list wastes a term.

The reading paper

Across all language specifications

Selection, summary, inference and analysis of a writer's methods. Dubai scripts lose most on the summary task, where students include everything rather than selecting, and on method questions answered by naming a device without saying what it achieves.

Directed and transactional writing

Across all language specifications

A task specifying audience, form and purpose. The repeatable discipline is to identify all three and plan paragraphs before writing a sentence, which is mechanical, teachable and worth a band on its own.

Composition and imaginative writing

Across all language specifications

Narrative or descriptive writing where students lose marks by attempting too much plot in too few words. The reliable repair is scope reduction: one moment, few characters, and craft spent on the sentence rather than on the story.

Speaking and listening components

Endorsed separately or counted, depending on the code

Frequently forgotten until late because it carries no written homework. Whether it affects the reported grade depends on the specification code, which is one more reason to establish the code before planning anything.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

English support works on a weekly rhythm because writing improves by being produced, marked and rewritten. Three shapes cover almost every need.

Weekly task, marked, one paragraph rewritten

One task written between sessions and marked against the published descriptors with the band stated before the session. Twenty minutes on what the band required and where the script fell short, then one paragraph rewritten live with the tutor commenting as it is typed. Both versions kept and dated. The remaining time sets the next task.

  • 60 minutes, live video, one named specification per slot
  • Band stated on every marked piece, with the limiting sentence quoted
  • One paragraph rewritten in the session, not the whole piece
  • Both versions kept, so the rewrite can be compared to its predecessor

Reading-paper block

Six to eight sessions aimed at the reading paper, which carries half the Cambridge First Language grade and is the component most Dubai plans under-serve. Summary selection, inference, and analysis of a writer's methods, each practised as a question type rather than as general comprehension.

  • Six to eight sessions with a stated end rather than open-ended
  • Summary practised as selection, with a word count enforced
  • Method questions answered as effect rather than as device-naming
  • Timed question sets marked against the published descriptors

Literature quotation and method block

Built around the school's actual text list, confirmed first. Eight quotations per text, each tied to one method and one theme, drilled until retrieval is automatic, then practised in timed paragraphs that analyse method rather than narrate plot. Most useful in Year 10, when the examination is still eighteen months away.

  • Text list confirmed with the school before anything is built
  • Eight quotations per text, each tied to a method and a theme
  • Paragraphs practised as analysis, with narration marked as a loss
  • Timed essay practice once retrieval is reliable

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

What an IGCSE English tutor in Dubai should hand over weekly

  • Marked script with the band stated and the limiting sentence quoted
  • Rewritten paragraph beside its original, both dated
  • A running record of which descriptor keeps failing
  • The only external evidence available when a predicted grade is questioned

Three documents, and nothing else is needed. A marked piece of the student's own writing with the band stated and the sentence that limited it quoted. A dated rewritten paragraph alongside the original, so the change is visible rather than described. And a running record of which descriptor the student keeps falling short of, because in English the same descriptor usually fails week after week until somebody names it.

The reason to insist on the band rather than a mark is that a mark cannot be acted on. A score of 24 means nothing to a Dubai parent and little to the student. A statement that the response sat in a particular band because it addressed a general reader rather than the specified audience, with the opening sentence quoted as evidence, is a repair instruction. The next task either addresses the audience or it does not, and that is a checkable outcome.

The running descriptor record is the part that makes it a file rather than a sequence of lessons. Over six weeks it shows a pattern: this student always identifies purpose and never identifies audience, or always varies vocabulary and never varies sentence structure. A pattern is a plan. Without the record, each week's marking is a fresh observation and the same fault is rediscovered every time.

There is a secondary use that Dubai families find later. A predicted English grade is a professional judgement made from classwork, and it drives post-16 applications. Where a family wants to question one, a stack of independently marked scripts with bands stated is the only external evidence available, and it is received very differently from a parental impression about how well their child writes.

02

Which English is your child actually sitting?

The word 'English' covers at least three different subjects on a Dubai timetable, with different descriptors and different plans. Cambridge First Language English 0500 sets two two-hour papers of equal weight: reading at fifty per cent and directed writing and composition at fifty. Cambridge 0990 is the same subject reported on the numeric scale. Cambridge English as a Second Language exists as 0510, where speaking is endorsed separately, and 0511, where speaking contributes to the grade.

Literature is a separate subject again. Cambridge Literature in English 0475 examines poetry and prose, drama, and either an unseen paper or a coursework component, built on a text list the school selects. Pearson Edexcel runs its own English Language A specification, 4EA1, pairing non-fiction texts with transactional writing in the longer paper and poetry and prose with imaginative writing in the shorter, plus English Literature 4ET1 with its own text lists.

Those distinctions have practical consequences a week of tutoring can waste. A plan built for Cambridge directed writing does not transfer cleanly to Pearson transactional writing. Quotation work built on the wrong text list is a term lost. A student entered for 0511 who has never prepared for a speaking component is carrying an unaddressed part of their grade. And a student placed in First Language who should be sitting Second Language is being marked against descriptors that do not fit them.

So the first action is an email to the school's exams officer asking for the specification codes and, for Literature, the exact text list. Teachers frequently do not have codes to hand; exams officers always do, because entries are made from them. It takes one email and it removes the most common source of wasted English tutoring in this market.

03

The reading paper, which half the plan usually ignores

  • Summary is a selection task; fullness is penalised, not rewarded
  • Naming a device is not an answer; the effect and the purpose are
  • Hedged inference scores below a committed reading with evidence
  • All three are teachable operations, not fixed reading ability

On Cambridge First Language English the reading paper carries fifty per cent, the same as writing, and in most Dubai tutoring plans it receives a fraction of the attention. Writing feels like the thing that can be improved and reading feels like a fixed ability, which is the wrong way round: reading-paper marks are won by three specific, teachable operations, and almost all of the loss is in the same three places every time.

The first is summary. A summary task asks the student to select, and students include everything they found interesting. Marks are awarded for relevant points within a stated limit, so a response that covers the ground twice as fully in twice the words scores less than a disciplined one. The repair is mechanical: list candidate points, rank them against the question's focus, cut to the limit, then write. Practised six times it becomes automatic.

The second is the method question, which asks what a writer's language achieves. Dubai scripts routinely name the device — a simile, a short sentence, a list — and stop. Naming earns little; stating the effect on the reader and tying it to the writer's purpose earns the mark. The tutoring repair is to ban the device name as a complete answer and require the sentence to continue to 'which makes the reader…' until the habit sticks.

The third is inference under time. Questions asking what a text implies rather than states require the student to commit to a reading and support it, and anxious students hedge. A hedged answer that offers two possibilities earns less than a committed one with evidence. That is partly technique and partly confidence, and marked scripts with the band stated address both, because a student who sees a committed answer rewarded twice stops hedging.

04

Directed writing: the three things to settle before the first sentence

Directed and transactional writing tasks specify an audience, a form and a purpose, and the single highest-yield habit in IGCSE English is identifying all three in writing before composing anything. A letter to a head teacher, a speech to fellow students and an article for a local paper are three different registers, and a response that is well written in the wrong register has already lost the marks for audience awareness however good its sentences are.

The second step is a paragraph plan with a job for each paragraph. Dubai scripts frequently contain four paragraphs doing the same job: four variations on the same argument, each well expressed. The descriptors reward development, which means each paragraph has to add something the previous one did not. Writing one word beside each planned paragraph naming its job takes ninety seconds and reliably moves a band.

The third is the deliberate feature. Each task type has moves that earn credit — a direct address to the audience in a speech, a counter-argument acknowledged in a persuasive letter, a specific detail in an article — and students who have never been told which moves the form rewards cannot deploy them. Listing three for the task type before writing converts vague advice about style into three checkable actions.

What makes this work as evidence rather than advice is the marking. The task comes back with the band stated and the specific failure quoted: the audience was never addressed, or two paragraphs shared a job, or the register slipped at the third paragraph. The student then rewrites one paragraph in the session, and the before and after sit side by side in the file. A band moves because of a change somebody can point at.

THE PRE-WRITING CHECKPOINTS, AND WHAT THE MARKED SCRIPT SHOWS WHEN ONE IS SKIPPED
CheckpointWhat the student writes downWhat the descriptor rewardsWhat the script looks like when it is skipped
AudienceWho is reading this, in three wordsRegister and address matched to the named readerWell-written prose in the wrong register throughout
FormLetter, speech, article, reportConventions of the form used without being labouredAn article that reads as an essay with a title attached

Paragraph jobsOne word per planned paragraphDevelopment across the response rather than repetitionFour paragraphs making the same point in different words
Three deliberate featuresThree moves the form rewardsCraft that is visible and purposefulCompetent writing with nothing the descriptor can credit
05

Composition: why ambitious plots lose marks

Narrative and descriptive composition is where able Dubai students most often underperform, and the cause is almost always scope. A student with eight hundred words attempts a story with three locations, four characters, a betrayal and a twist. The result is summary rather than writing: events reported at pace because there is no room to render anything. The descriptors reward crafted language and controlled structure, neither of which survives that much plot.

The repair is a reduction. One moment, one or two characters, a single location, and the time that was going into events redirected into the sentence. A student who writes four hundred words about a person waiting for a bus, with real attention to what waiting looks like, will reliably outscore the same student's four hundred words covering a kidnapping. This is counter-intuitive to a fifteen-year-old and it is demonstrable within two marked pieces, which is why the file matters more than the advice.

Descriptive writing has its own specific failure, which is the adjective list. Students taught to use rich language produce sentences carrying three adjectives per noun, and the descriptors reward precision rather than quantity. One exact verb does more than three approximate adjectives, and the marking that shows this is the marking that quotes the student's own sentence back and asks which word is doing the work.

Structure is the third element and the least taught. A composition that opens where the interest is, rather than with context nobody needed, and that ends on something other than the character waking up, is being structurally controlled. Those are two concrete instructions. Marked against the descriptor for structure, a student can see what each is worth rather than being told their story needs a better ending.

06

Literature: the quotation bank is the asset

Literature set texts are taught up to eighteen months before they are examined, which makes retrieval the structural problem rather than understanding. A Year 10 student who understood a play in February will be writing about it in a Year 11 examination, and the limiting factor will not be insight but whether they can produce supporting quotation at speed. That argues for building a quotation bank in Year 10, as soon as the text list is confirmed.

The bank has a specific shape. Around eight quotations per text, each short enough to be reproduced exactly, each tied to one method the writer uses and one theme it serves. Eight well-chosen quotations with method and theme attached cover more examination questions than thirty quotations memorised without attachment, because the attachment is what makes a quotation usable in an unseen question.

The second Literature problem is narration, and it is the most common single loss in this subject. Marks go to analysis of how a writer achieves an effect, and scripts routinely retell what happens with evaluative adjectives applied. The tutoring repair is to mark narration explicitly as a loss, line by line, until the student can feel the difference between 'the character then discovers' and 'the writer withholds this until'.

Timed practice comes last rather than first, which is the opposite of how most Literature revision is organised. Writing a timed essay before the quotations are secure and the analytical habit is established produces a fluent essay about plot, which is precisely the thing that will not score. Once retrieval is reliable and narration has stopped, timed practice does what it is supposed to do, and the marked scripts show the band moving.

07

The eight-week evidence cycle

Writing grades move slowly and visibly, which makes a fixed measurement cycle genuinely useful. Week one is a baseline: one reading question set and one writing task, both timed, both marked against the published descriptors with bands stated. Weeks two to seven run the weekly rhythm of task, marking, and one rewritten paragraph. Week eight repeats the week-one tasks of the same type and places the two bands side by side.

Eight weeks is the right interval because writing habits take about that long to change. A measurement at three weeks shows noise. A measurement at six months shows a result nobody can attribute to anything. At eight weeks, with a weekly marked record in between, a family can see both the band movement and the descriptor that drove it, and the next cycle is planned from that rather than from a general sense of progress.

The descriptor record is the part that makes the cycle diagnostic. If the audience-awareness note appears in weeks two, three, four and five and then stops, something changed and the file names it. If it appears in all eight weeks, the plan was not addressing it and the next cycle needs a different method rather than more of the same. Either reading is more useful than a mark.

Placement in the Dubai calendar matters. A comparison week sitting just after the long December break measures retention of a habit rather than recency, which is the more useful number: a writing habit that survives three weeks of holiday is a habit, and one that does not was a recent instruction. The table sets out the cycle as used.

THE EIGHT-WEEK ENGLISH CYCLE: WHAT IS COLLECTED AND WHAT IT PROVES
WeekWhat is producedWhat is recordedWhat it proves
Week 1, baselineOne timed reading set and one timed writing taskBand for each, plus the limiting descriptor namedWhere the student sits, against the descriptors rather than a set ranking

What it costs in Dubai, and what a tutor may not do

English is well supplied in this market, which keeps it out of the scarcity bands. Published rates read in October 2026: EdFlik lists online tuition from AED 45-65 an hour and Tutopiya from AED 33-52; Unitors publishes IGCSE tuition from AED 150; TutorChase quotes AED 270 for specialist work; the Bestimate survey puts IB and IGCSE specialists at AED 200-450 and above; BartyED publishes AED 650 for a premium named tutor. Monthly packages advertised include AED 799 for eight online sessions.

What English specifically requires is marking rather than explanation, and that places it firmly in the qualified band at AED 150-300. Marking a writing task against published descriptors and stating the band is the product; it is not available at the budget tier, where the realistic service is explanation and worked examples. Equally, there is rarely a scarcity argument for paying above the qualified band in a well-supplied subject, so a higher quote should come with a stated reason.

The in-home comparison runs the same way as elsewhere. The Bestimate survey puts qualified in-home one-to-one at AED 180-350 an hour, with independent home tutors quoted at AED 200-500, against AED 150-300 for comparable work online. For English there is also a medium argument: the student's own text on a shared screen with comments in the margin, both versions saved, beats a script marked in pen and carried away. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai or anywhere in the UAE; home visits are an India-only service.

One boundary needs stating plainly because English is where it is most often crossed. A tutor may teach writing technique, mark against the descriptors, discuss a plan, question a student's reasoning, and comment on a draft the student wrote. A tutor may not write, rewrite into a final version, or supply text for submission, and that applies with particular force to any coursework component a school operates. The work that is submitted has to be the student's own, and where it is not the consequence falls on the student. IB Gram also holds no approval, accreditation, licence or partnership from KHDA, the Ministry of Education, Cambridge or Pearson, and does not reproduce or distribute their syllabus documents, past papers or mark schemes.

09

Dubai's school context and the English week

The English cohort in this emirate is being enlarged and diversified at the same time, and both halves of that matter to a tutoring plan. Seven new private schools were approved for the 2026-27 intake, four of them UK curriculum, adding 16,846 places. They join a sector that already held 387,441 students across 227 private schools in 2024-25, offering 17 different curricula with UK-curriculum provision taking the largest share of enrolment. All of it sits under the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, which is responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate and inspects annually against six bands from Outstanding to Very Weak - so a school's published English results and its inspection band are both readable before you choose a tutor to work alongside them. KHDA also confirmed on 22 May 2026 that private school fees in the emirate would not rise for 2026-27.

The feature of this landscape that matters most for English is linguistic range. Dubai's international schools draw students from many first-language backgrounds into the same year group, which is why the First Language against Second Language decision is a live question in a way it is not in a single-language system. It is a decision about which descriptors a student will be marked against, and getting it wrong costs a grade in either direction: an under-placed strong writer loses the top of the range, an over-placed developing writer is marked against expectations they cannot meet.

The mandatory-subject requirement adds language load that a UK English plan does not assume. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social and Moral studies are taught in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed curriculum, with separate classes required for Arab and non-Arab students in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and combined classes for the two groups prohibited. Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit, with KHDA advising no such lesson falls below 25 minutes.

For the mandatory subjects the use of different or additional content without prior permission from the Ministry of Education is prohibited, and teachers of Islamic Education and Arabic must hold the relevant approval from KHDA. Separately, private tutoring in the UAE requires the MoHRE private tuition work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, granted free of charge for two years through MoHRE's own service with a stated two-working-day completion time. Tutoring without one carries fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule has been published.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Dubai

Online delivery means the specification decides the tutor rather than the distance. What the postcode changes is when a student can write a two-hour paper without being interrupted.

Dubai Marina and JLT

Apartment living and shared study space. A timed two-hour writing paper needs a desk and silence, which in these buildings is easier mid-afternoon than in the evening, so the writing task is usually set for a weekend morning instead.

Al Barsha and Dubai Hills Estate

Large British-curriculum cohorts with setted English groups and internal moderation. An independently marked script with the band stated cuts through a set ranking that tells a family nothing about which descriptor is being missed.

Arabian Ranches, Mudon and Damac Hills

Long bus routes and evening sport. Sessions here run late, so the structure is inverted: the task is written at the weekend, marked midweek, and the session is spent on the marked version and one rewritten paragraph.

Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim and Al Safa

Established schools with stable Literature set texts year to year, which means quotation work can begin in Year 10 with confidence that the text list will not change under the student.

Mirdif, Al Warqa and Al Qusais

A wide mix of first-language backgrounds and frequent transfer between curricula. This is the cluster where the First Language against Second Language specification judgement is made most often, and making it wrongly costs a grade.

Dubai Silicon Oasis and Academic City

Short commutes make a 4.30pm session realistic, which suits paragraph rewriting where the student types and the tutor comments live rather than describing what to change.

Al Furjan, Discovery Gardens and Dubai South

Newer schools with smaller Year 11 cohorts and sometimes one teacher across all English sets. With no parallel set and little internal moderation history, an external mark against the published descriptors carries proportionally more weight.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Established Dubai British-curriculum schools

Long-running IGCSE English provision with setted groups, internal moderation and stable Literature text lists. Families here usually want an independent band judgement rather than teaching, particularly where a predicted grade is being questioned.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Get the specification codes and the text list

Email the school's exams officer for the English codes — 0500, 0990, 0510, 0511, 4EA1 — plus the Literature code and the exact text list, and whether any coursework route is in use. Those facts decide the plan. A quotation bank built on the wrong texts is a term lost for nothing.

  2. 02

Free 30-minute trial lesson, one per family

Live video with the matched tutor, no card details taken, no obligation. It is spent on one paragraph of the student's own writing marked live against the published descriptors, with the band stated and the limiting sentence quoted, because that is the product and it should be seen before it is bought.

  3. 03

Baseline week: one reading set, one writing task

Both timed, both marked against the published descriptors with bands stated and the limiting descriptor named. The output is a starting point measured against the descriptors rather than against a set ranking, and the first entry in the descriptor record.

  4. 04

Weekly rhythm: task, marking, one rewrite

A task written between sessions and marked before the session, then one paragraph rewritten live with the tutor commenting as it is typed. Both versions kept and dated. Reports go to the parent the same evening with the band and the quoted sentence that limited it.

  5. 05

    Comparison week at eight

The baseline task types repeated under the same conditions, with both bands placed side by side and the descriptor history beside them. Where the same descriptor has limited every week of the cycle, the method changes rather than the frequency increasing.

  6. 06

Specification check before any coursework work

Where a school operates a coursework route, the boundary is agreed in writing first: the tutor teaches, questions and comments on drafts the student wrote, and does not write, rewrite or supply text. That is stated before the first coursework session rather than discovered during one.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The band is stated, not implied

Every marked piece names the band it reached and quotes the sentence that limited it. A score of 24 cannot be acted on; a statement that the response addressed a general reader rather than the specified audience, with the evidence quoted, is a repair instruction.

Both versions of the rewrite are kept

One paragraph is rewritten in each session and the original is retained beside it. A rewrite that can be compared with its predecessor is evidence of a change; a rewrite that replaces the original is a claim about one.

The descriptor record finds the pattern

The limiting descriptor is recorded every week, which after six weeks shows whether the same fault repeats. In English the same descriptor usually fails week after week until somebody names it, and naming it is what makes the pattern a plan.

Specification confirmed before planning

First Language, Second Language and Literature are different subjects with different descriptors, and Cambridge and Pearson tasks differ again. Confirming codes and the Literature text list costs one email and removes the most common source of wasted English tutoring.

The reading paper gets its half of the hours

On Cambridge First Language English, reading carries fifty per cent and is usually under-served because writing feels more improvable. Reading marks are won by three teachable operations, not by a fixed reading ability, and the plan treats them that way.

The student writes every word

A tutor teaches, marks, questions and comments on a draft the student produced. Nothing is written for them, rewritten into a final version or supplied for submission, which matters most where a school operates a coursework route and the consequence of crossing the line falls on the student.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

Why does IGCSE English marking feel so subjective to a Dubai parent?+

Because the feedback usually arrives as a number and a word in the margin, which is not enough to act on. Reading and writing are both marked against published descriptors that name specific things: whether an answer selects relevant detail, whether a response addresses the audience the task specified, whether sentence structures vary with purpose. A marked script that states the band and quotes the sentence that limited it converts the subject from taste into a set of operations. A student who believes marking is arbitrary has no reason to change anything, which is why that belief is the most damaging one in the subject.

Which English specification has my child's Dubai school entered?+

Ask the exams officer in writing for the code. Cambridge First Language English is 0500 or, on the numeric scale, 0990. Cambridge English as a Second Language is 0510, where speaking is endorsed separately, or 0511, where it contributes to the grade. Cambridge Literature in English is 0475. Pearson Edexcel runs English Language A 4EA1 and English Literature 4ET1 with its own text lists. The codes matter because the descriptors and tasks differ, and because a student entered for a code where speaking counts needs speaking preparation nobody has planned.

Does my child need First Language or Second Language English?+

It is a judgement about which descriptors fit, not about ability or status, and in Dubai's multilingual year groups it is a live question. An under-placed strong writer loses the top of the available range; an over-placed developing writer is marked against expectations they cannot meet, and both outcomes cost a grade. The decision should be made from two marked pieces, one against each set of descriptors, rather than from a teacher's impression or a family's preference. Ask the school how it made the placement and what evidence sat behind it.

How much of the IGCSE English grade is reading rather than writing?+

On Cambridge First Language English 0500 the reading paper carries fifty per cent, the same as directed writing and composition. In most Dubai tutoring plans it receives far less than half the attention, because writing feels improvable and reading feels like a fixed ability. It is not. Reading marks are won by three teachable operations: selecting rather than including in a summary task, stating the effect of a writer's method rather than naming the device, and committing to an inference with evidence rather than hedging between two readings.

Why does my child lose marks on the IGCSE summary question?+

Because a summary task asks for selection and students supply fullness. Marks are awarded for relevant points within a stated limit, so a response that covers twice the ground in twice the words scores less than a disciplined one. The repair is mechanical and transfers immediately: list the candidate points, rank them against the question's specific focus, cut to the limit, then write. Practised six times with the limit enforced, it becomes automatic. It is one of the fastest band movements available in the subject and it requires no improvement in reading ability at all.

What should a student do before writing an IGCSE directed writing answer?+

Write down three things and plan the paragraphs. Audience, in three words: who is reading this. Form: letter, speech, article, report. Purpose: persuade, inform, argue, describe. Then one word beside each planned paragraph naming the job it does, because scripts frequently contain four paragraphs making the same point in different words and the descriptors reward development rather than repetition. Finally, three deliberate features the form rewards, such as direct address in a speech or a counter-argument acknowledged in a persuasive letter. The whole process takes about three minutes and reliably moves a band.

Why do ambitious stories score badly in IGCSE composition?+

Because plot crowds out craft. A student with eight hundred words attempting three locations, four characters and a twist ends up reporting events at pace, and the descriptors reward crafted language and controlled structure rather than incident. The repair is scope reduction: one moment, one or two characters, a single location, and the words that were going into events spent on the sentence instead. Four hundred words about someone waiting for a bus, written with real attention, outscores the same student's four hundred words covering a kidnapping, and two marked pieces demonstrate it.

When should a Dubai student start building a Literature quotation bank?+

In Year 10, as soon as the school confirms its text list. Set texts are taught up to eighteen months before they are examined, so retrieval rather than understanding is the structural problem by the time the examination arrives. The bank should hold around eight quotations per text, each short enough to reproduce exactly and each tied to one method the writer uses and one theme it serves. Eight quotations with method and theme attached cover more examination questions than thirty memorised without attachment, because the attachment is what makes a quotation usable on an unseen question.

What is the most common mistake in IGCSE Literature essays?+

Narration. Marks go to analysis of how a writer achieves an effect, and scripts routinely retell what happens with evaluative adjectives attached. 'The character then discovers' is narration; 'the writer withholds this until' is analysis, and the difference is the whole subject. The tutoring repair is to mark narration explicitly as a loss, line by line, until the student can feel which mode they are in. Timed essay practice should come after that habit has changed, because a fluent timed essay about plot is precisely the thing that will not score.

How long does it take to move an IGCSE English writing band?+

About eight weeks for a habit change, which is why the measurement cycle is set at that interval. Week one establishes a baseline with one timed reading set and one timed writing task, both marked against the published descriptors with bands stated. Weeks two to seven run the weekly rhythm of task, marking and one rewritten paragraph. Week eight repeats the baseline task types and places the bands side by side. A measurement at three weeks shows noise; one at six months shows a result nobody can attribute to a specific change.

Why rewrite only one paragraph rather than the whole piece?+

Because a full redraft teaches less. Rewriting one paragraph properly, with the tutor commenting as it is typed and the descriptor requirement in view, isolates the change and makes it visible. Both versions are kept and dated, so the improvement is a comparison rather than a claim. A student who redrafts four paragraphs typically applies the same general effort to all four and cannot say afterwards what changed. The single-paragraph rewrite is slower in appearance and faster in effect, and it builds a file that shows its own working.

Can a tutor help with IGCSE English coursework in Dubai?+

Within a boundary that should be agreed in writing before the first session. A tutor may teach the skills the task requires, discuss the student's plan, question their choices, and comment on a draft the student wrote. A tutor may not write any part of it, rewrite a draft into its final form, or supply text for submission. This matters with particular force in English, where the line between editing and rewriting is easy to blur, and where the consequence of crossing it falls on the student rather than the provider. Ask any tutor to state the boundary explicitly.

What does an IGCSE English tutor cost in Dubai?+

Published rates read in October 2026 put budget online provision at AED 33-52 at Tutopiya and AED 45-65 at EdFlik, a qualified online subject tutor at AED 150-300 with Unitors listing IGCSE from AED 150, specialist work at AED 270 at TutorChase, and premium named listings at AED 650. English needs marking against descriptors rather than explanation, which places it in the qualified band; the budget tier realistically delivers explanation and worked examples instead. English is well supplied in this market, so a quote above the qualified band should come with a stated reason.

Is online English tuition as useful as a tutor in the room?+

For this subject it has a real advantage. The student's own text sits on a shared screen with comments in the margin, the paragraph is rewritten live while the tutor comments as it is typed, and every version is saved and dated so a term's work can be compared. A script marked in pen and carried away cannot be set beside its rewrite in March. The published cost difference also runs one way: AED 180-350 for qualified in-home work against AED 150-300 online. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; that is an India-only service.

When are IGCSE English exams sat by candidates in Dubai?+

Cambridge runs a June series and a November series, and UAE candidates sit those two; the February/March series is offered to India only, so a March date on a tutoring site belongs to another country's calendar. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs May/June and November. Dubai schools enter overwhelmingly for the summer window. One administrative point matters: every Cambridge centre is allocated to one of six administrative zones, and Cambridge states it is essential to use the correct timetable version for the zone and cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong one.

Ask for the band, not the mark

The useful first step in IGCSE English is not a package. It is one piece of your child's own writing marked against the published descriptors, with the band stated and the sentence that limited it quoted. That single page tells you whether the problem is audience awareness, paragraph development, scope or register, and those are four different repairs. Email the school for the specification codes and the Literature text list, send one recent piece of writing, take the free 30-minute trial lesson, and ask for the limiting descriptor in writing. If it comes back strong, spend the money elsewhere.
