Cambridge IGCSE ICT 0417 Online Tutor in Dubai

A Cambridge IGCSE ICT 0417 online tutor in Dubai should leave behind something you can read. Not a cheerful message after each lesson, but a marked practical attempt, a note of which criterion it failed, and the next task chosen because of that failure. This page is about that paper trail: the diagnostic task we open with, how a practical attempt is actually marked, what six weeks of records look like, and what grade movement does and does not prove.

  • Every practical attempt marked against the published criteria, in writing
  • A running record you keep: tasks set, errors found, targets closed
  • Sessions delivered online over live video on Gulf Standard Time
  • The student types; the tutor watches the screen and the formula bar

Tuition you can audit: what a 0417 record should contain

Most tutoring is bought on impression and judged on the final grade, which means a family spends a year finding out whether the decision was right. For a subject assessed the way Cambridge IGCSE ICT 0417 is assessed, that is avoidable. Sixty per cent of the grade comes from two practical papers marked on files the student produced, so the raw material of progress is already in file form. A tutor can mark it, date it, and hand it back. If they do, you stop guessing.

A 0417 online tutor in Dubai working this way produces four things. A diagnostic from the first session that names the specific failure rather than the subject. A marked attempt each week, with the criterion that was missed identified by name and not by tone. A running target list where items are closed with evidence and new ones opened. And an honest statement, periodically, about what the evidence supports and what it does not. The fourth item is the one that separates a teaching record from a marketing one.

The format makes this easier rather than harder. Over screen share the tutor sees the student's cursor, the formula bar, the file-save dialogue and the evidence document being built in real time. Those are precisely the things a 0417 marker looks at. A tutor sitting beside a student sees the same screen at a worse angle and usually ends up reaching for the keyboard. Online, the student types, which matters because typing under time pressure is part of what is being examined. Lessons run as one-to-one live video on Gulf Standard Time; IB Gram does not send tutors to homes in the UAE, as home visits are a service we run only in India.

What follows sets out the mechanics. The opening diagnostic and the five things one well-chosen spreadsheet task exposes. How a practical attempt is marked, check by check, including the evidence requirements that cost able students grades for reasons unrelated to the subject. A six-week record with the targets and the marking findings laid out as they actually appear. Then the uncomfortable sections: why grade movement is a weak measure over short periods, what a KHDA inspection report does and does not tell you about your school's provision, and exactly where the honesty line sits when the work being supported is a file.

None of this requires trust in advance. Ask for the marked example, ask what the first session will diagnose, and ask what the record will look like after a month. A tutor who can answer those three questions in detail is describing something they already do. One who answers them in adjectives is describing something they intend to, which is a different purchase entirely.

At a glance

  • 0417 is externally examined across three papers, with no coursework
  • The two practical papers are marked from the student's evidence document
  • A diagnostic names the failing step, not the subject
  • Targets are closed with marked evidence, then replaced
  • Short-run grade movement is noisy; method change is measurable sooner
  • Lessons are one-to-one online, scheduled on Gulf Standard Time
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Four programmes meet in a Dubai Year 10 ICT decision, and knowing which one your child is actually on changes what the evidence should show. These are the routes our 0417 students arrive from and leave for.

0417Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE Information and Communication Technology

Three external papers. The theory paper carries 40% of the grade and is marked on precision of wording. The two practical papers carry 30% each and are marked on output plus the evidence captured while producing it. Nothing is teacher-assessed, so there is no draft cycle and no internal moderation; everything rests on what happens in the exam room on the day.

In Dubai the gap between schools on this qualification is mostly lab time, not teaching quality. A school with a dedicated computer room and a department that protects its timetable gets students through enough practical repetitions. A school running ICT in a shared room with borrowed laptops often cannot, and the evidence for that shows up in the first marked mock rather than in any report.

0478Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE Computer Science

The option 0417 usually sits against in a Dubai option block, and the one most often confused with it. 0478 examines computational thinking, algorithms and programming alongside computer systems theory. It rewards abstraction and debugging patience. 0417 rewards reading an instruction exactly and executing it quickly in software. The two share a few theory topics and almost nothing else.

We see a steady stream of Dubai students who took 0417 wanting to code and 0478 wanting to use software, and in both cases the mismatch surfaces around November of Year 10. A single diagnostic session before options are locked is the cheapest intervention available in this subject, and it is one a school's own careers conversation rarely has time for.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

IB MYP Design and Digital Design

The route many Dubai students come from, because the emirate has a large IB sector and families move between schools mid-phase. MYP Design assesses inquiry, development of ideas and reflection against criteria A to D, with the process documented. It builds project discipline and documentation habits. It does not build speed at timed software tasks, which is the thing 0417 examines.

A student moving from an MYP school into a Cambridge school at Year 10 in Dubai arrives with better documentation habits than most and worse exam-room pacing. The first marked 0417 practical attempt usually shows both at once: a tidy, well-labelled evidence document attached to a task that ran out of time halfway.

POST-16Ages 16-19 · Years 12-13

A Level, BTEC and IB Diploma routes after 0417

0417 is not a prerequisite for A Level Computer Science and is not designed as one. It feeds IT and business-facing BTEC routes, supports data handling in A Level Business and Economics, and leaves a student genuinely competent in spreadsheets and databases, which carries into undergraduate study across most faculties.

Several Dubai sixth forms offer A Level Computer Science without an IT equivalent, so a student who liked 0417's practical half and disliked its theory needs a different Year 12 plan. Checking what the school actually runs at post-16 before Year 11 options close saves a difficult February conversation.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Below are the 0417 skills we diagnose and then track, written as what the marked evidence reveals rather than as syllabus headings. Each one is a target that can be opened, worked on and closed with a dated attempt.

Absolute and relative referencing

Paper 3 · tracked weekly

The marked evidence shows this instantly: a replicated column where every value after the first is wrong. One misplaced dollar sign produces a cascade, and the student rarely notices because the first cell looks right. Closing this target means three consecutive attempts where the formulae view is clean.

Lookup and conditional functions

Paper 3 · tracked weekly

Nested conditions and lookup ranges are where able students stall. The evidence to look for is a function that returns a plausible answer for the wrong reason. A tutor who only checks the displayed value will pass it; a tutor who checks the formulae view will not.

Field types and database integrity

Paper 2 · tracked weekly

A numeric field set as text breaks every calculation downstream, and the report still prints. Marked attempts catch this at source. The target is closed when the student sets types before entering data rather than fixing them after a query fails.

Multi-criteria queries and calculated fields

Paper 2 · tracked weekly

Queries combining criteria across fields, with a calculated field and a sort, are a reliable mid-paper discriminator. The common evidence pattern is a query that answers a simpler question than the one asked, which reads as carelessness and is usually misreading.

Named styles against manual formatting

Paper 2 · tracked weekly

Two documents can look identical and score differently. If the instruction names a style, applying the formatting by hand scores nothing. The marked evidence shows the style pane, so this is one of the few targets that can be verified in seconds and closed permanently.

External stylesheets and HTML structure

Paper 3 · tracked weekly

The syllabus wants content, structure and presentation kept apart. Inline styling that produces the right appearance loses the marks. Marked evidence here is the source view, and the target closes when the student attaches a stylesheet by reflex rather than by reminder.

Mail merge from a supplied data source

Paper 2 · tracked fortnightly

A sequence task with several points of failure: the data source, the field insertion, the suppression of blank lines, and the selective merge. Evidence is the merged output plus the field codes, and partial credit depends on showing both.

Presentation master slides and notes

Paper 2 · tracked fortnightly

Among the most collectable marks in the qualification and among the most often skipped, because this section sits late in the paper. The evidence trail is the master view and the printed notes layout. A student who banks these early buys time elsewhere.

Evidence document discipline

Both practical papers · audited every session

Correct work with no captured evidence cannot be credited. The audit is mechanical: is each screenshot present, is the formulae view shown where required, is the source visible, is the candidate detail on every page. Able students lose grades here without a single subject error.

Instruction reading under time pressure

Both practical papers · tracked weekly

Most 0417 errors in marked attempts are not knowledge failures but reading failures: the wrong filename, the wrong format, a step performed in the wrong order. The measurable version of this target is the count of instruction-compliance marks lost per attempt, which should fall steadily.

Paper 1 command-word precision

Paper 1 · tracked weekly

The theory paper is marked on wording. Describe, explain, give, state and compare each demand a different shape of answer, and a well-informed student who answers in the wrong shape scores low. Marked answers make the pattern visible within three attempts.

Pacing across a long practical paper

Both practical papers · timed from week four

Each practical paper is a long sitting of many short tasks, so the skill is abandoning a stuck task and returning. Evidence is the attempt-order log: students who finish task one perfectly and task eight not at all score below students who finish everything roughly.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways families run 0417 tuition with us, separated by how much marked work each one generates. More marking means a sharper record and a higher cost in tutor time, so the choice is a real one.

Weekly session with a running record

Sixty minutes of live one-to-one teaching, a practical task set afterwards, and that task marked before the next session. The record accumulates: each entry carries the date, the task, the criteria missed and the target opened or closed. This is the format that makes progress legible after a month rather than after a mock.

  • One marked practical attempt per week, returned in writing
  • Targets opened and closed with dated evidence
  • Session recording kept for the student's own revision
  • A short written summary you can read in two minutes

Fortnightly marked-paper review

For students who are broadly fine and need calibration rather than teaching. A full practical paper is attempted at home under timed conditions, the tutor marks it including the evidence document, and the session is spent entirely on what the marking found. Less contact time, more marking time, and a clearer picture of exam-room behaviour.

  • Full past practical papers attempted to time
  • Marking covers output, evidence capture and file handling
  • Session agenda set by the mark sheet, not by a syllabus order
  • Suits students already near their target grade

Mock-season intensive

A short dense block in the weeks before a Cambridge series. Two or three sessions a week, every one built around a timed attempt, with Paper 1 command-word drilling interleaved. The record becomes a week-by-week trend line, which is the point at which grade movement starts to mean something.

  • Two or three sessions weekly for four to eight weeks
  • Timed attempts under exam-room conditions and software
  • Evidence documents audited task by task
  • Trend reported as marks per component, not as a single grade

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

What a marked 0417 attempt shows that a school report does not

  • Three different failures produce the same disappointing grade
  • Four checks on one file separate them
  • Targets are written as behaviours, closed over three attempts
  • Method change is visible in a fortnight; outcomes are not

A Dubai school report tells you a grade and a sentence. It rarely tells you which step failed. For 0417 that distinction is not pedantry, because the underlying failures have completely different fixes. A student scoring poorly on Paper 3 because they cannot write a lookup function needs teaching. A student scoring poorly because they can write it but did not capture the formulae view needs a thirty-second habit change. A student scoring poorly because they spent twenty minutes perfecting task one needs timing practice. The grade is identical in all three cases.

Marked evidence separates them in a single attempt. Open the file, check the formulae view, read the evidence document, look at which tasks were finished and in what order. Four checks, maybe ten minutes, and the diagnosis is no longer a guess. This is also why a parent can audit a 0417 tutor more easily than a tutor in most other subjects: the artefact exists, and either the tutor has read it carefully or they have not.

What we do with it is unglamorous. Each marked attempt produces at most three targets, written as observable behaviours rather than topics. "Sets field types before entering data" is a target. "Improve databases" is not. Targets stay open until three consecutive attempts show them closed, and then they are retired and replaced. Over a term the list becomes a short history of what was actually wrong, which is more useful at a parents' evening than any amount of encouragement.

The honest limit of this method is that it measures method, not outcome. It will tell you within a fortnight whether the student's approach to a practical task has changed. It will not tell you their final grade, and anyone who claims otherwise is selling certainty that does not exist in this qualification.

02

The opening diagnostic: one task, five findings

The first session with a new 0417 student does not begin with teaching. It begins with a single spreadsheet task chosen because it fails in five distinct ways, and the tutor watches without intervening. The task asks the student to import a supplied file, build a formula using an absolute reference and a lookup, replicate it down a column, format a currency output, save under a specified filename, and capture the formulae view as evidence. It takes a competent student around twelve minutes.

What the tutor is watching is not whether it is right. It is the sequence. Did the student read the whole instruction before starting, or start at the first verb. Did they set the reference deliberately or guess and check. Did they verify the replication at the bottom of the column or assume it. Did they save before or after formatting. Did they capture the evidence at all, or only when reminded at the end. Each of those is a separate habit and each one has a different fix.

The table below is the diagnostic sheet we fill in from that one task. Most students fail two or three lines, and the pattern is more informative than the count. A student failing only the evidence lines has a strong subject grasp and a fragile exam technique, and will gain marks quickly. A student failing the reference and lookup lines needs weeks of content teaching before pacing work is worth starting. Treating those two students the same way wastes the second student's term and the first student's money.

The diagnosis is written up and sent to the parent within a day, in plain language, with the recommendation attached. Occasionally the recommendation is that tuition is not the right purchase yet, because what the attempt showed was a software-access problem at home rather than a teaching gap.

03

How a practical attempt is actually marked, check by check

Marking 0417 practical work properly is a mechanical process, and describing it is the clearest way to show what you are paying for. The tutor does not read the output and form an impression. They work through the task list in order, and for each task they look at three things: the output, the method evidence, and the compliance details. All three can fail independently, and the mark scheme treats them independently.

Take a spreadsheet task. The output check asks whether the displayed value is correct. The method check opens the formulae view and asks whether the correct value came from the correct construction, because a hard-typed number produces the right answer and earns nothing. The compliance check asks whether the file is named as instructed, in the required format, printed to the stated layout, with candidate details visible. A student can pass the first and fail the other two, which is the most common profile among able students in Dubai schools with limited lab time.

The web authoring tasks run the same way with different artefacts: rendered page, source view, stylesheet attachment. The database tasks check the report output, the query construction and the field types. The presentation tasks check the slides, the master view and the notes layout. None of this is difficult, and all of it is time. A tutor charging a low hourly rate is usually not doing it, and the gap between a tutor who does and one who does not is largely this process rather than any difference in subject knowledge.

The output of the marking is a sheet the student and parent both receive: task number, the three checks, pass or the specific failure, and a comment only where a comment adds something. Comments like "good effort" are not written, because they tell nobody anything and take up space where a criterion name should be.

Six weeks of a real 0417 record, and how to read it

This is what the paper trail looks like in practice, generalised from the records of Dubai Year 11 students who started tuition after a disappointing first mock. The pattern repeats often enough to be worth publishing, and reading it tells you what to expect and when to worry.

Weeks one and two are usually unflattering. The diagnostic opens three targets and the first marked attempts confirm them rather than improving on them, because the student is still working the old way while being asked to work differently. Parents sometimes interpret this as a bad sign. It is the opposite: a record that shows improvement in week one is usually a record of a tutor setting an easier task. Weeks three and four are where compliance and evidence targets close, because those are habit changes and habits close fast. Weeks five and six are where content targets begin to move, and that movement is slower and less linear.

What should worry you is a record with no closed targets by week four, or a record where the same target is restated every week in slightly different words. The first means the targets were too broad. The second means they were never behavioural in the first place. Either is a reason for a direct conversation, and in our case a reason to consider a different tutor rather than a different student. We would rather move a student in week four than defend a match until the mocks.

The table sets out the shape. The marks column deliberately shows component marks rather than a grade, because a grade is too coarse to move in six weeks and reporting it weekly invents precision. A component mark on a comparable task, marked the same way each time, is a real measure.

SIX WEEKS OF A 0417 RECORD: TARGETS, FINDINGS AND WHAT MOVED
WeekTask set and markedWhat the marking foundTarget status
1Diagnostic spreadsheet task, untimedCorrect output, no formulae view captured, default filenameThree targets opened: evidence, file handling, verification
2Short lookup and replication taskEvidence captured once prompted; replication unverified againNo closures; evidence target partially moving
3Two-task set: query with criteria, then a reportField types set before entry for the first time; report overflowed the pageFile-handling target closed; layout target opened

5Full timed Paper 3 attemptStylesheet attached correctly; one nested condition wrongPacing improving; content target opened on conditions
6Full timed Paper 3 attempt, repeat conditionsAll compliance marks collected; nested condition correctThree of five targets closed; content work continues
05

Grade movement, and the four reasons it lies

  • Compare matched tasks, or compare nothing
  • Internal mock marking and external marking are different exercises
  • Compliance marks arrive in blocks and flatter a weekly chart
  • Report component marks, not a predicted grade

Parents reasonably want to know whether the grade is going up. Reporting that honestly means admitting that short-run grade movement in 0417 is a poor measure, for four specific reasons, and that a tutor who reports it confidently every fortnight is reporting noise as signal.

The first reason is task variation. Two practical papers are not equally difficult, and a student can score higher on an easier paper while getting worse. Unless the same paper or a matched task is used, the comparison is meaningless. The second is marking variation. A school's internal mock marking and an external marker's application of the criteria are not the same exercise, and a generous internal mark followed by a strict external one looks like decline. The third is the compliance cliff. Because evidence and file-handling marks come in blocks, closing one habit can lift a score sharply in a week, which flatters the method rather than proving mastery. The fourth is simple regression: a student's worst mock is often their worst day, and the next attempt improves regardless of intervention.

The workable response is to report component marks on matched tasks, to report the target list alongside, and to be explicit about which movement is habit and which is content. Habit gains are real, fast and finite; once compliance marks are being collected reliably there are no more to collect. Content gains are slow and cumulative. A record that distinguishes them lets a parent make a sensible decision in week six about whether to continue, and that is the decision the record exists to support.

We also state what no evidence can support. No tutor can promise a grade in this subject, and a page that offers one is describing an outcome it does not control. What a record supports is a statement about what has changed in how the student works, with dates and files attached.

06

Paper 1 theory: command words and the marked-answer trail

Forty per cent of the grade sits in a written paper, and the marked-answer trail for theory is simpler to build than for practical work. The student answers five questions, the tutor marks them against the published criteria, and the pattern of loss appears almost immediately. In our experience with Dubai students it is nearly always the same pattern: the knowledge is present and the shape of the answer is wrong.

The command word sets the shape. A question asking the student to state wants a short unqualified fact. Describe wants the characteristics without reasons. Explain wants the reasons, and an answer that describes will score nothing however accurate. Give two reasons wants two genuinely different reasons, so two phrasings of one reason earns one mark. Compare wants both sides in the same sentence, not a paragraph on each. None of this is hard to learn and all of it is invisible until someone marks the answers.

The second pattern is directional. Where a question asks for drawbacks, a surprising number of well-prepared students supply benefits, because they revised the topic as a list and the list was mostly positive. Marked answers surface that within three attempts, and the fix is a thirty-second habit: underline the command word and the direction before writing anything. Across a full theory paper that habit is worth a meaningful number of marks, and it is the cheapest intervention in the whole qualification.

The table below is the reference we drill from. It is deliberately short, because a student who internalises five command words answers the paper correctly and a student handed a list of twenty internalises none of them.

0417 PAPER 1 COMMAND WORDS: WHAT EACH ONE REQUIRES

Reading a KHDA report for what it says about ICT

  • Read the phase attainment lines, not the headline band
  • The recommendations section is where provision gaps appear
  • No report names a syllabus code; the inference is yours
  • Dubai had 227 private schools and 17 curricula in 2024-25
  • IB Gram holds no permit or relationship with KHDA

Dubai gives parents something most cities do not: an annual published inspection of every private school by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, which u.ae describes as responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate. Ratings run on a six-band scale down from Outstanding. Used carefully, a report is useful background to a 0417 decision. Used carelessly, it is misleading, because an overall band tells you almost nothing about one department.

What to look for is narrower than the headline. Subject attainment and progress in the relevant phase, any comment on the quality of teaching in technology or computing, and the recommendations section, which is where a report tends to say the quiet part. A school rated highly overall can carry a recommendation about assessment practice or about provision for higher-attaining students, and either of those can explain exactly why your child's practical marks are flat. The report will not mention 0417 by code, so the inference is yours to make.

Context helps too. Dubai's private sector held 387,441 students across 227 private schools offering 17 different curricula in 2024-25, with the UK curriculum at 37% of enrolment. KHDA confirmed in May 2026 that there would be no increase in private school fees for the 2026-27 academic year under Dubai's second economic incentives package, and the 2026-27 intake adds seven new private schools creating 16,846 places. A sector growing that fast has departments at very different stages of maturity, which is the practical reason two students sitting the same paper can have had quite different amounts of lab time.

IB Gram holds no KHDA permit, approval or relationship of any kind, and nothing here should be read as implying one. The regulator is described because its published material is genuinely useful to a parent making this decision, and because almost no competing page in this search result mentions it at all.

08

Where the honesty line sits when the work is a file

  • 0417 has no coursework, so there is nothing to submit outside the exam
  • Demonstrations happen on a parallel file, never on the student's own
  • The tutor marks and questions; the student types
  • Official papers and mark schemes are linked, not redistributed
  • No board or regulator accreditation is held or implied

0417 has no teacher-assessed component, which removes the hardest version of this problem. There is no draft being developed over weeks, no supervisor signing a declaration, no internal moderation. The papers are sat under exam conditions with source files supplied for the series, and the student produces the output alone. That makes the boundary unusually clear, and it is worth stating precisely because the essay mills ranking for adjacent searches blur it deliberately.

The line is this. A tutor may teach a method, demonstrate it on a different dataset, set practice tasks, mark attempts, point to the criterion that was missed, and ask questions until the student sees the error themselves. A tutor may not supply finished output for a student to submit as their own, and for 0417 the question barely arises because there is nothing to submit outside the exam room. Where it does arise is school practice tasks and mock papers, and our position there is the same: the tutor marks and questions, and the student types.

In practice this means a specific habit during screen-shared sessions. The tutor does not take control of the keyboard to fix the student's work. They take control only to demonstrate on a separate file, then hand it back. It is slower and occasionally frustrating for both sides, and it is the difference between a student who can do the task in February and a student who watched someone do it in November. Where a demonstration is necessary, it happens on a parallel example so the student's own file stays entirely theirs.

Two related points. We do not supply Cambridge past papers, mark schemes or syllabus documents as downloads; those are published by Cambridge and we link to the official source instead. And we make no claim to any accreditation, approval or registration from Cambridge, KHDA or any ministry, because none is held.

Where we tutor

Dubai communities our 0417 students log in from

An online session removes the drive but not the clock. These are the Dubai districts we schedule 0417 lessons into most often, with the detail that affects when a session can realistically start and how stable a screen share will be.

The Greens and The Views

Mid-rise apartment living with short school runs to the Barsha and Al Khail school belt. Desks are usually shared family space, so a 17:00 slot works better than a 19:00 one once siblings are home.

Al Furjan and Discovery Gardens

Large expatriate population with school buses running west along the Expo corridor. Arrival times are late and variable, so families here tend to settle on 17:45 or a weekend morning rather than an early weekday slot.

Motor City and Dubai Production City

Townhouse communities where students often have a dedicated desk and a second screen, which suits Paper 3 work. Internet stability is good; the limiting factor is sport and club schedules running to 18:00.

Nad Al Sheba and Meydan

Villa districts feeding a cluster of newer British-curriculum schools. Students here frequently take 0417 alongside a heavy science load, so sessions are kept to 60 minutes and the marking carries the weight between them.

Dubai Creek Harbour and Ras Al Khor

Newer high-rise community with short commutes into Festival City schools. Sessions from 16:30 are achievable, which makes it one of the easier areas to place a second weekly slot during mock season.

Town Square and Dubailand

Long bus journeys in both directions. Weekday sessions before 18:00 are often unrealistic, and the practical answer is usually one weekday evening plus one weekend morning rather than two weekday slots.

Palm Jumeirah

Villa and apartment mix with reliable connections and quiet study space. Students here tend to have access to current software versions at home, which removes one common source of practice mismatch.

Al Jaddaf and Dubai Healthcare City

Apartment living near several international schools, with short journeys and early arrivals home. A 16:30 start is realistic here, and that extra hour matters in the final six weeks before a series.

A newer belt of British and international schools built along the Al Khail corridor. Several run well-resourced computer rooms, and marked 0417 work from students here usually shows good software fluency with weaker command-word precision on Paper 1.

  • Nord Anglia International School Dubai
  • GEMS Wellington Academy Al Khail
  • GEMS International School Al Khail
  • Dubai Heights Academy
  • Dwight School Dubai
  • Safa British School

Nad Al Sheba, Meydan and Sobha Hartland

Recently opened schools with young Year 11 cohorts, where ICT departments are still establishing how much practical time the timetable gives. Evidence-document discipline is the target that most often needs opening for students from this cluster.

  • Kent College Dubai
  • North London Collegiate School Dubai
  • Hartland International School
  • Swiss International Scientific School Dubai
  • Royal Grammar School Guildford Dubai

Jebel Ali, Dubai South and Remraam

The western school belt, where long bus routes shape when tuition can happen. Students here often come to us after a first mock practical paper, and the marked attempts typically show pacing rather than knowledge as the limiting factor.

  • The Winchester School Jebel Ali
  • South View School
  • Greenfield International School
  • Arcadia Global School
  • Fairgreen International School

These schools are named to describe the Dubai market this page covers; IB Gram claims no affiliation, partnership or endorsement with any school listed.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the mock paper, not a description

If there is a marked mock practical attempt, send it. Ten minutes with the actual file tells us more than a long conversation, and it means the first session can start from a real diagnosis rather than from a general question about where the difficulty lies.

  2. 02

    A diagnostic first session, unpaid

One spreadsheet task, watched without interruption, then a written diagnosis within a day. You see what the tutor noticed and how they describe it. If the diagnosis reads like a sales document rather than a set of observations, that is useful information too.

  3. 03

    Three targets, written as behaviours

The plan opens at most three targets, each phrased as something observable in a marked attempt. Broad targets like improving confidence are not used, because nothing can be shown to close them and a record full of them cannot be audited by anyone.

  4. 04

    Weekly marking between sessions

The task set after each session is marked before the next one, including the evidence document and compliance details. The next session's agenda comes from the mark sheet. That is the whole mechanism, and it is why the record says something by week four.

  5. 05

A month-four review with the record in front of you

After roughly four sessions we sit with the record and decide together whether to continue, change the plan or stop. Closed targets, open targets and component marks on matched tasks are the inputs. A decision to stop is a legitimate outcome of that review.

  6. 06

Timed attempts from week four onwards

Once habits are closing, tasks move to exam timing and exam software. From this point the record starts reporting component marks on matched papers, which is the only version of grade movement worth sending to a parent.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The record is the product

Marked attempts, dated targets and component marks on matched tasks, all of it shared with the parent. You can read it in two minutes and challenge any line of it. Tutoring that produces nothing readable is tutoring you have to take on faith for a year before you find out.

Marking is inside the hour, not an extra

Opening the evidence document, checking formulae in their displayed form, inspecting HTML source and auditing file names is the work that moves a 0417 grade. It takes real time and it is part of teaching the subject rather than a separate service with its own line item.

The student stays at the keyboard

Over screen share a tutor physically cannot take over the typing, which for a practical qualification is a feature. Demonstrations happen on a parallel file. The skill being examined is the student performing tasks under time pressure, so the student performs them.

We report what the evidence supports

Habit gains are reported as habit gains, content gains as content gains, and noise as noise. No predicted grades are issued weekly, because a grade cannot move meaningfully in a fortnight and reporting one anyway invents precision nobody has.

A match that is not working gets changed

If four sessions produce no closed targets, the usual problem is the match or the plan, not the student. Say so and we change it. A tutor defending a match until the mocks costs a term that cannot be bought back at any rate.

Boundaries are stated, not assumed

No accreditation from Cambridge, KHDA or any ministry is claimed, no official papers are redistributed, no finished work is produced for submission, and no tutor is sent to a UAE address. Each of those is written on the page rather than left for a parent to work out.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

How will I know whether a 0417 online tutor is actually making a difference?+

Ask for the record. For this qualification there is a physical artefact every week: a practical attempt that can be marked, dated and compared with the last one. A useful record shows the task set, which criteria were missed, which targets were opened and which have closed with evidence. By week four you should see at least one closed target. If what you receive instead is a weekly message saying the session went well, you have no way to judge the purchase, and after a term you still will not.

What does a marked 0417 practical attempt look like when it comes back?+

A task-by-task sheet rather than a graded page. For each task there are three verdicts: whether the output was correct, whether the method evidence showed the required construction, and whether the compliance details were right, meaning filename, format, print layout and candidate information. Failures are named by criterion rather than described in general terms, and comments appear only where a comment adds something. The attached files come back too, so you can open the formulae view yourself if you want to check the marking. It is deliberately dry; a mark sheet that reads like encouragement is not telling you anything.

How long before marked work shows movement in 0417 practical scores?+

Compliance and evidence habits usually close within three to four weeks, because they are habit changes rather than knowledge gaps, and they can lift a component mark noticeably. Content gaps, such as nested conditions or lookup construction, move over six to ten weeks and move unevenly. Weeks one and two often look flat or slightly worse, which is normal: the student is being asked to work differently and is still partly working the old way. A record showing improvement in week one usually means the task was easier, not that the student was better.

Can an online tutor really see enough to mark 0417 practical work properly?+

For this subject, online delivery sees more rather than less. The tutor watches the shared screen, so the cursor, the formula bar, the save dialogue and the evidence document are all visible as they happen, and those are exactly what a marker examines. Afterwards the files themselves are sent over and marked at a desk rather than glanced at across a table. The one thing an online tutor cannot do is take the keyboard, which for a qualification examining timed software work is an advantage, since the student has to be the one performing the task.

What evidence should I ask a 0417 tutor for after four sessions?+

Four things. The written diagnosis from session one, so you can see what was identified at the start. Four marked attempts with dates. The target list showing what has closed and what remains open. And component marks on at least two matched tasks, meaning tasks of comparable difficulty marked the same way, since any other comparison is noise. If a tutor can produce all four without preparation, the system exists. If they need a week to assemble it, it was assembled for you rather than kept as a working record.

My child's school report says ICT is fine but the mock practical was poor. Which is right?+

Usually both, because they measure different things. A report often reflects classwork, engagement and coursework-style tasks completed without time pressure. A practical mock measures output, method evidence and compliance under a clock. A student can be genuinely good at the subject and still lose a grade to default filenames, uncaptured formulae views and one task that consumed twenty minutes. The way to settle it is to look at the mock script itself and check which of the three failed. That takes ten minutes and replaces a disagreement with a diagnosis.

Does my child need to record their screen so the tutor can mark the work?+

No. The tutor watches the screen live during the session, and between sessions the student simply sends the files, which contain everything a marker needs: the output, the formulae view where required, the HTML source, and the evidence document. We do record the tuition session itself, with your agreement, so the student can revisit a demonstration during revision. That recording is for the student's use rather than for marking. Nothing about a child's school, grades or work is published anywhere, and you can ask for the recordings and marked files to be deleted at any point.

How is Paper 1 theory marked, and what does a marked answer actually show?+

Against the published criteria, which reward the shape of the answer as much as its content. The marked answers from a Dubai student almost always show the same pattern: the knowledge is there and the shape is wrong. Describe answered with reasons, explain answered with a description, two reasons answered as one reason phrased twice, drawbacks answered with benefits. Each of those is a shape error, not a revision gap, and each is fixed by a short habit of underlining the command word and the direction before writing. Three marked sets are usually enough to make the pattern obvious to the student themselves.

What does a KHDA inspection rating tell me about my school's ICT department?+

Less than parents assume, and more than nothing. The overall band is a whole-school judgement, so read the phase-level attainment and progress lines and then the recommendations section, where provision gaps are usually described. A highly rated school can carry a recommendation about assessment practice or about stretching higher attainers, either of which can explain flat practical marks. No report names a syllabus code, so the inference is yours. Dubai had 227 private schools offering 17 curricula in 2024-25, and a sector adding schools that quickly has departments at very different stages of maturity.

Where is the line between a 0417 tutor helping and a tutor doing the work?+

Clearer here than in most subjects, because 0417 has no teacher-assessed component. There is no draft developed over weeks and nothing submitted outside the exam room, where source files are supplied and the student works alone. A tutor may teach a method, demonstrate it on a separate dataset, set tasks, mark attempts and question the student until they find their own error. A tutor may not supply finished output for submission as a student's own. During screen-shared sessions ours take control only to demonstrate on a parallel file, then hand back, so the student's own file stays entirely theirs.

Can a 0417 tutor use my child's own school tasks as the marked evidence?+

Yes, and it is often the most efficient route, because the student is already doing the work and the school's tasks reflect what their department emphasises. The tutor marks the attempt after the student has completed it, and the marking covers the same three checks as any other attempt. What does not happen is the tutor working on a task the student is about to submit for a school assessment. Where a school task is being assessed, we mark a parallel task instead and leave the submitted piece untouched, which keeps the boundary clean and avoids an awkward conversation with the department.

What happens if six weeks of marked work shows nothing closing?+

That is a signal about the plan or the match rather than about the student, and it should trigger a conversation rather than another six weeks. The usual causes are targets written too broadly to close, tasks set at the wrong level, or a tutor and student who are not working well together. We would rather move a student to a different tutor in week four than defend a match until the mocks. A tutoring arrangement that cannot show a single closed target after a month is not producing the thing you are buying, whatever the hourly rate.

How do you track progress across both 0417 practical papers at the same time?+

By component rather than by paper. The target list is organised around skills, so absolute referencing and lookup functions sit under Paper 3, field types and named styles under Paper 2, and evidence discipline and instruction reading under both. Most students have a clearly weaker paper, so sessions weight towards it while keeping a maintenance task on the stronger one, because practical fluency decays faster than theory knowledge. From week four, timed attempts alternate between the two papers so the record carries matched comparisons on each rather than a single blended figure.

Do we get the recordings and marked files to keep?+

Yes. The marked sheets, the returned files and the session recordings belong to the family, and the running target record is shared rather than held privately by the tutor. Students use the recordings most in the fortnight before a series, usually to rewatch one demonstration of a construction they have forgotten. If you want everything deleted, ask and it is deleted. We keep no child's school name, grades or work in any public place, and a lead form that collects details about a minor states what it collects and why.

Is a mock practical paper a reliable predictor of the final 0417 result?+

A single mock is weak evidence; two matched attempts marked the same way are much better. Internal mock marking and external marking are different exercises, so a generous internal mark followed by a strict external one looks like decline when nothing has changed. A student's worst mock is often simply their worst day. What a mock reliably shows is behaviour: pacing, evidence capture, instruction compliance and which tasks were abandoned too late. Those are the things worth reading out of it, and they are also the things a tutor can change inside six weeks.

Ask for the marked attempt before you ask for the rate

The useful question to put to any 0417 tutor in Dubai is not what they charge. It is to show you a marked practical attempt and explain what they would have done next. The answer tells you whether they open the evidence document, whether they check formulae in their displayed form, and whether they can name a criterion rather than describe a feeling. Start with a diagnostic session, read the written diagnosis, and look at the record again after four weeks. If nothing has closed by then, change something. That decision is much easier to make when the evidence is sitting in front of you.
