ICSE to IGCSE Transition in Dubai

An ICSE to IGCSE transition in Dubai starts from a stronger position than most families expect. ICSE students arrive with three separate sciences already studied, unusually well-developed English, and real experience of internally assessed project work. This page sets out exactly what transfers, what still has to be learned, and the weekly record of marked papers and raw marks that shows whether the move is working. Sessions run online, one to one.

  • Three separate sciences already studied, which maps directly
  • ICSE English is the closest thing to a clean transfer in this move
  • Every session leaves a marked script with a raw mark and a date
  • Syllabus codes confirmed before any past paper is downloaded

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

A strong starting position, measured properly

ICSE is a broad and demanding programme, and a student arriving from it into an IGCSE course in Dubai brings three specific advantages that are worth naming before anything else. They have studied physics, chemistry and biology as separate subjects rather than as a combined science, which maps directly onto the IGCSE separate-science route. Their English has usually been developed through both language and literature work, which is the closest thing to a clean transfer available in this move. And they have produced internally assessed project work, so the idea that a mark can come from something other than a written paper is familiar.

None of that means the move is frictionless. IGCSE assesses through a published mark scheme that pays for a visible route to the answer, splits several subjects into tiers with different grade ceilings, and in the Cambridge sciences includes a written paper about practical work that no Indian board sets in the same form. Those are real adjustments. They are also short ones, and the reason to start by listing the strengths is that a plan which treats this as a deficit will bill for re-teaching content the student already holds.

This page is organised around evidence, because the only honest way to know whether the adjustment is happening is to look at marked work. A grade in the first term tells you very little: the student is learning the system rather than performing in it. Two comparable papers sat under the same conditions a month apart, with their raw marks written down side by side, tells you a great deal. So does a topic list that shortens and an error log that narrows.

The first administrative step comes before any of that. Cambridge 0580 and Pearson 4MA1 are both called IGCSE Mathematics and set different papers. The statement of entry carries the board, the syllabus code and the tier for every subject, and reading it takes thirty seconds. Families arriving from a different system have no reason to know the distinction matters, and Dubai households frequently contain children on both boards.

The second is the series. UAE candidates sit the Cambridge June series with November available as a second route, and the Pearson May/June window with a November window. Cambridge offers the February and March sitting to India only, which is relevant here because a family that has just relocated carries the Indian calendar in memory, where it was correct. Entry deadlines belong to the exam centre, usually the school, and fall months before the papers.

Sessions are delivered online, one to one, over live video with the script on a shared screen. IB Gram does not run home visits in Dubai, since that is an India-only service. For a family mid-relocation the online format keeps both the tutor and the accumulating record of marked work continuous, which matters more than any single lesson does.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Where a student joins decides whether this is a conventions job or a coverage job. These are the three entry points Dubai families encounter, with what each one actually needs.

Year 9Ages 13-14 · after ICSE Class 8

Joining before the IGCSE course begins

The cheapest entry. A full year exists before the IGCSE syllabus starts, which is time to meet a published mark scheme, build the habit of writing method out, and choose options on evidence. An ICSE student at this point usually needs only the conventions, because the content pace is comparable.

Dubai schools confirm IGCSE options during Year 9. An ICSE student used to studying three sciences separately should be asked specifically whether the new school's triple science route is available, because a combined award would narrow what they have already built.

Year 10Ages 14-15 · after ICSE Class 9

Joining at the start of the IGCSE course

A clean entry point with the syllabus starting from the beginning. The work is paper anatomy rather than catching up: tier, command words, written method, and the Cambridge practical component. Four to six marked tasks usually settle the adjustment, with the raw marks showing it.

Tier decisions for Core and Extended are confirmed during or at the end of Year 10 in Dubai schools. An ICSE mathematics background typically supports Extended, and a marked Extended paper under timing is the evidence that makes the case to the school.

Year 11Ages 15-16 · during ICSE Class 10

Joining partway through

Harder, because the series is fixed and part of the syllabus has been taught in the student's absence. Coverage gaps and conventions gaps both exist, and they must be separated in writing, since one is measured in terms and the other in weeks.

For a mid-Year-11 arrival the first question is which board, code and tier the school has entered the student for, and whether the centre's deadline has passed. That decides whether June or the November route is the realistic target, and it is an administrative question rather than an academic one.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Each subject below is described in terms of what an ICSE student already holds and what the IGCSE paper will still ask for, which is the comparison that makes a short, evidence-led plan possible.

Mathematics

Cambridge 0580 Core and Extended; Pearson 4MA1 Foundation and Higher

ICSE mathematics generally supports the Extended or Higher route comfortably on content. The recoverable marks are method marks: the scheme pays for a visible route, and a student trained to reach answers efficiently loses them until the habit changes. Three marked papers is the usual fix.

Physics

Cambridge 0625; Pearson 4PH1

Having studied physics as a separate subject is a real advantage, since the IGCSE separate-science route assumes exactly that depth. What is new is units and significant figures treated as marks, and on Cambridge codes a written paper about practical work.

Chemistry

Cambridge 0620; Pearson 4CH1

Equation work and mole calculations transfer well from ICSE. The marks sit in conventions: state symbols, named reagents and conditions, and visible working. These are invisible in an ICSE report and visible on a first marked IGCSE script.

Biology

Cambridge 0610; Pearson 4BI1

ICSE biology builds strong structured recall. IGCSE rewards precise accepted wording and data interpretation instead, so practice has to be done with the published scheme open rather than from a textbook, which students resist and which works.

First Language English

Cambridge 0500; Pearson 4EA1

The closest transfer in this move. An ICSE student who has handled both language and literature work arrives with the reading and writing range the paper expects, and usually needs only the task conventions: audience, form and purpose on directed writing.

English Literature

Cambridge and Pearson literature specifications

Where a school offers it, an ICSE background makes this a strong option rather than a risk. The adjustment is to timed comparative and extract-based response structures rather than to the reading itself, which is a matter of two or three marked attempts.

History and Geography

Cambridge 0470 and 0460; Pearson 4HI1 and 4GE1

ICSE covers these within a broader group, so the content emphasis shifts. Source handling structure in history and case study detail with place names and figures in geography are the specific conventions to learn, and both are patterns rather than content.

Additional Mathematics

Cambridge 0606; Pearson 4PM1

Often a good fit for an ICSE-trained student heading towards A-Level mathematics or Higher Level IB. Coverage among tutors is thinner than in core mathematics, so it is worth asking about availability early rather than in the examination term.

Computer Science and ICT

Cambridge 0478 and 0417

ICSE computer applications gives a reasonable foundation, and the IGCSE route is more formal in its treatment of algorithms and data representation. Worth checking which of the two codes the school offers, since they assess quite different things.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways to run this move, all online, each producing a different piece of the record.

Baseline and specification check

A short first engagement reading board, code, tier and series off the statement of entry, confirming the centre's deadline, then having the student sit one whole paper of that exact specification under timing. The tutor marks it to the published scheme and separates coverage gaps from conventions gaps in writing.

  • Board, code, tier and series confirmed in writing
  • One correct-specification paper sat under real timing
  • Coverage gaps and conventions gaps listed separately
  • A raw mark and a date recorded as the baseline

Conventions block with bracketed marks

Four to six sessions on the mark scheme conventions that are new: written method, command words, accepted biological wording, context application. Bracketed by two comparable marked papers so the result is a pair of raw marks rather than an impression of progress.

  • A marked paper before and after, same conditions
  • Written method drilled on the student's own working
  • Command words matched before any answer is written
  • Both raw marks reported side by side at the end

Practical paper block

Four sessions on the Cambridge alternative-to-practical paper, which needs no laboratory and which no Indian board sets in the same form. Results table conventions, instrument precision, scales, lines of best fit, and specific sources of error. The highest-return block for a transferring science student.

  • Fifteen results tables drawn to the scheme's conventions
  • Instrument precision practised, including the half-division rule
  • Specific errors and improvements, never human error
  • A marked practical paper at each end of the block

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

Three advantages an ICSE student actually arrives with

Transition advice tends to describe every curriculum move as a gap to be closed, and in this case that framing loses real information. The first advantage is the sciences. An ICSE student has studied physics, chemistry and biology as separate subjects, which is the structure the IGCSE separate-science route assumes. A student arriving from a combined-science background into triple science has a genuine depth problem; an ICSE student does not, and should be asked whether the triple route is available at the new school before being placed on a combined award.

The second is English. ICSE develops both language and literature work, and the reading and writing range that produces maps closely onto IGCSE First Language English and, where a school offers it, onto an IGCSE literature specification. This is the nearest thing to a clean transfer available in any of the Indian-board moves, and it means English is usually the wrong place to spend money in the first term.

The third is internal assessment. ICSE subjects carry internally assessed components alongside the written paper, so the notion that a mark can come from work produced over time rather than in an examination hall is already familiar. That matters later, at A-Level coursework or at IB Internal Assessment, more than it does at IGCSE itself, but it is a habit worth recognising rather than rebuilding.

The table sets each advantage against where it lands in an IGCSE programme and what still has to be learned. The third column is the honest part: an advantage reduces the work rather than removing it, and knowing which conventions remain is what keeps a plan short.

WHAT AN ICSE BACKGROUND GIVES, AND WHAT STILL REMAINS
ICSE strengthWhere it lands at IGCSEWhat still has to be learnedTime it usually takes

02

What the first marked paper shows

  • Sit one paper of the exact specification, under real timing
  • Self-mark against the published scheme before anyone else sees it
  • Ask for coverage gaps and conventions gaps as two separate lists
  • Record the raw mark, the tier and the date as the baseline

The single most useful thing a transferring family can do is have the student sit one whole paper of their exact specification under proper timing, self-mark it against the published scheme, and then have it marked independently. That hour produces the information that the next three months depend on, and it is the step most often skipped in favour of a conversation about curriculum differences.

For an ICSE student the script typically shows a recognisable distribution. Content is largely present, sometimes conspicuously so in the sciences. Method marks are missing in mathematics and in chemistry calculations, because the working was done mentally. Command words have been answered by instinct, so an accurate account appears where an explanation or a comparison was required. And the practical paper, if attempted at all, is close to blank, because its conventions have never been taught.

That distribution is good news and should be presented as such. Three of those four categories are conventions rather than knowledge, and conventions move in weeks. A student who writes method out, reads the command word before the stem, and has drawn fifteen results tables to the scheme's conventions will see the raw mark move on a comparable paper within a month, and the movement is visible rather than asserted.

The fourth category, genuine coverage gaps, matters only for students arriving mid-course, and it must be separated from the other three in writing. Coverage takes terms and conventions take weeks, and a plan that merges them will either overcharge a Year 10 arrival or under-deliver for a mid-Year-11 one. Ask for the two lists separately after the baseline paper, because that is what makes the rest of the plan honest.

03

ICSE English into First Language English

This is where an ICSE background pays most and where families most often spend money unnecessarily. The reading range, vocabulary and comfort with extended writing that ICSE English develops is largely what the IGCSE paper assumes, and a student with a solid ICSE English record usually needs the task conventions rather than the language itself.

Those conventions are specific and short. Directed writing is assessed on audience, form and purpose as well as on quality of writing, so a well-written piece in the wrong register loses marks that have nothing to do with ability. A letter that reads like an essay, a speech with no sense of an audience, a report with no structure: each is a conventions failure and each is fixable by writing the same task twice a fortnight apart with the published criteria beside both versions.

The reading components reward precise retrieval and concise summary, which is a different discipline from literary appreciation. ICSE students sometimes write beautifully about a passage and fail to answer what was asked, particularly on summary tasks with a word limit. Practising against the limit, with the mark scheme visible, resolves this quickly because the student can see which of their sentences were being counted.

Where a school offers an IGCSE literature specification alongside, an ICSE student is often a strong candidate for it rather than a risk, and it can be a dependable grade on a timetable where the sciences are competing for attention. The adjustment is to timed extract-based and comparative response structures, which is two or three marked attempts, not a term.

04

Mapping the subjects, with codes

Subject names do not translate directly and the mismatches are where plans go wrong. ICSE Science is already three subjects, which is the cleanest part of the mapping, but a Dubai school may still place a transferring student on a co-ordinated double award or a single combined award for timetable reasons. Those have different paper patterns and a narrower content range, and for an ICSE student that is a step back rather than a simplification. Ask before accepting it.

History and Civics plus Geography at ICSE sits within a broader group than the separate Cambridge or Pearson history and geography subjects, so content emphasis shifts even where the subject name survives. In mathematics the mapping is clean and the code still matters: Cambridge 0580 and Pearson 4MA1 are different papers, and Additional Mathematics is worth asking about for a strong candidate.

The second language ICSE requires is the element most often lost in the move. A Dubai school may or may not offer that language as an IGCSE subject, and where it does, an existing strength converts into a graded subject on a crowded timetable. Where it does not, the student has a spare option slot, which is an opportunity rather than a loss, provided somebody notices it in time to choose deliberately.

The table maps the common routes. Treat the middle column as the question to put to the school rather than as the answer, because which award a student is entered for is a school decision recorded on the statement of entry.

05

The conventions that are still new

Four conventions account for most of the recoverable marks in this move, and all four are shared across subjects, which is why fixing them improves every paper at once. The first is written method. The published mark scheme awards marks for a recognisable route to the answer, so a student who does three steps mentally and writes the fourth is discarding marks already earned. This is the largest single avoidable loss in mathematics and chemistry.

The second is command words. An IGCSE paper uses its instruction vocabulary precisely, and an accurate account offered where an explanation, a judgement or a comparison was wanted earns little. ICSE training produces strong structured recall, which is exactly the material a command word redirects, so this fix is unusually efficient: the knowledge is already there and only its presentation changes.

The third is accepted wording, which bites hardest in biology. The scheme lists the terminology it will credit and that cannot be guessed, so a correct idea in loose language earns nothing. The only remedy is practising with the scheme open, which feels like cheating to students and is in fact the fastest way to learn what is being counted.

The fourth is the Cambridge practical paper, which is new in form even to a student who has done a great deal of laboratory work. It is a written paper about practical work and needs no equipment: results tables with units in the headings, instruments read to the precision they allow, scales that fill the grid, lines of best fit, and specific sources of error rather than human error. Four sessions clears it permanently.

06

The weekly record, and reading grade movement honestly

A first-term grade is a poor measure of a transition, because the student is learning the assessment system rather than performing in it. A parent who wants to know whether the move is working should look at artefacts instead, and the four that matter are cheap to produce and readable without knowing the subject.

The first is a marked script with a raw mark, the tier and the date. The second is an answer rewritten to a command word, with the original beside it and a note in the student's own words on what changed. The third is a results table or graph marked to the practical paper's conventions. The fourth is a topic list with items crossed off rather than rewritten at the same length.

Movement is then measurable rather than argued about. Two comparable papers, same board, same tier, same conditions, a month apart, with their raw marks written down. If the second is higher, something worked. If it is not, the method changes rather than the hours increasing. That single discipline removes most of the disagreement families have in a transition term, when everybody is anxious and nobody has data.

The table lists the artefact to ask for by session type. Ask for the artefact rather than for a progress update, because progress updates in a transition term are almost always optimistic out of kindness, and marked work is not. Keep the whole set in one folder, in date order, because the folder is what makes the difference between a productive month and a merely busy one visible, and it is also the thing to put in front of the school if a tier or a subject placement needs revisiting later in the year.

WHAT TO ASK FOR EACH WEEK, AND HOW TO READ IT
Session typeThe artefactHow a parent reads itWhat a weak week looks like

07

Timing, the series and arriving mid-course

UAE candidates sit the Cambridge June series with November as the second route, and the Pearson May/June window with a November window. Cambridge offers the February and March sitting to candidates in India only, so a plan carried over from an Indian school needs re-aiming. That is a common and reasonable error, because the calendar a family arrives with was correct where they were.

The deadline that binds is the exam centre's own rather than the board's published date, because the centre collates and submits entries. Ask the school's exams officer for that date in writing in the first week of the move. A missed entry deadline is the only failure in this process that no amount of preparation repairs, and it is most likely to catch a family in the middle of a relocation.

For a student joining partway through Year 11, the series choice is a real decision rather than a formality. Where coverage gaps are substantial, the November route buys several extra months of teaching at the cost of a confirmed grade only in the middle of the following January. Pearson's November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026 and its June 2026 results reached centres on 19 August 2026, which are the published patterns to plan against.

Make that decision with the baseline paper in front of you. A student whose script shows conventions losses and present content can usually target June. A student whose script shows whole questions with nothing usable in them is a coverage case, and entering June regardless frequently produces a grade that needs a resit anyway, which costs an entry fee, a term and the confidence.

08

Buying this honestly

Published Dubai rates give the arithmetic. A qualified online subject tutor sits at AED 150 to 300 an hour, with Unitors publishing IGCSE from AED 150. Specialist work is quoted at AED 200 to 450 and above in Bestimate's 2026 Dubai rate table, TutorChase at AED 270, and BartyED's premium named tier at AED 650. A four to six session conventions block is therefore roughly AED 600 to 1,800, and a four-session practical paper block around AED 600 to 1,200. Those are market figures; ours is quoted after the free trial lesson with session length and marking inclusion stated.

Refuse a plan that proposes re-teaching the sciences to a student who studied them separately for two years. In this move content is the strongest thing the student holds, and a provider billing for it has not looked at a marked script. Ask instead for the two lists, coverage and conventions, and for the number of sessions aimed at each.

Refuse any offer to supply past papers and mark schemes as downloads. They belong to Cambridge and Pearson, and the practical risk is larger than the legal one: private copies are frequently from superseded specifications or retyped with errors, so a student calibrates against the wrong standard. The school is the first source and both boards publish through their own channels.

Insist on the baseline paper before any teaching plan, and on raw marks recorded with dates throughout. No success rate, average grade or satisfaction figure appears on this page, because none could be produced with a sample size, a date and a method, and no tutor can promise a grade on an externally marked paper. What can be promised is a record you can read.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Dubai

This move happens across the Dubai communities with established Indian-curriculum provision, and the notes below cover what that means for scheduling and for getting the specification right.

Al Nahda and Al Qusais

Indian, British and IB schools within a short radius, so households move between systems without moving home. Where one child is still on ICSE and another has moved to IGCSE, practice folders labelled by board prevent a term of wasted work.

Karama, Oud Metha and Bur Dubai

Long-established Indian school provision and several British-curriculum options nearby. The statement of entry rather than the school's prospectus is what identifies which specification a transferring student is actually sitting.

Mirdif and Al Warqa

Large eastern communities with long commutes, so weekday evening sessions run late and get cancelled. A weekend slot for the timed paper and a short midweek session on practical paper conventions is the pattern that survives a term.

International City and Silicon Oasis

High turnover with many direct arrivals from India, including mid-year. This is where genuine coverage gaps are most likely, and where separating them from conventions gaps in writing matters most.

Jumeirah Village Circle and Sports City

Apartment communities with steady new arrivals. Students placed by age may join Year 11 with part of the syllabus already taught, which changes the plan from conventions work to real teaching.

Deira and Hor Al Anz

Dense school provision and an active tuition-centre market. The useful question for any local provider is price per student per hour, group size, and whether work is marked individually rather than as a class.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Read the statement of entry, then ask two questions

Board, syllabus code, tier and series for every subject. Then ask whether the separate-science route is available, since an ICSE student has already built that depth, and whether the second language from ICSE is offered as an IGCSE subject. Both answers shape the timetable.

  2. 02

Sit the baseline paper and record it

One whole paper of the exact specification, under full timing, self-marked against the published scheme, then marked independently. Record the raw mark, the tier and the date. Everything in the plan afterwards is measured against that one number.

  3. 03

Ask for two lists, not one

Coverage gaps and conventions gaps, separately and in writing. Coverage is measured in terms and conventions in weeks, and merging them is how a Year 10 arrival gets overcharged and a mid-Year-11 arrival gets an optimistic plan that quietly fails.

  4. 04

Clear the conventions first, then the practical paper

Written method, command words and accepted wording improve every subject at once, so they come first. The Cambridge practical paper block comes next for a science student, because the gap is total and the fix is mechanical and permanent.

  5. 05

Compare two raw marks each month

Same board, same tier, same conditions, a month apart, with the two numbers written down. If the second has not moved, change the approach rather than adding hours. That rule is what keeps a transition term honest when everyone is anxious.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

We name the advantages, because they change the plan

Three separate sciences, developed English and real internal-assessment experience are not flattery; they reduce the work. A plan that bills for re-teaching the sciences to an ICSE student has not looked at a marked script and is charging for the strongest thing they hold.

Two lists after the baseline, never one

Coverage gaps and conventions gaps are separated in writing, because one takes terms and the other weeks. That distinction decides whether June or November is the realistic target and whether a block should be four sessions or a full year.

The record is the measure, not the first-term grade

Marked scripts with raw marks and dates, command-word rewrites with both versions kept, results tables marked to convention, a topic list that shortens. A first-term grade measures system familiarity rather than ability.

The practical paper is treated as a new subject

The Cambridge alternative-to-practical component needs no laboratory and no Indian board sets it in the same form. Four sessions on tables, precision and specific errors protects a real share of every science grade, permanently.

The right series, not the remembered one

UAE candidates sit June and November; Cambridge offers the February and March sitting to India only. Re-aiming a plan carried over from India, and getting the centre's own deadline in writing, is worth more than any single lesson.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

What does an ICSE background give my child that other routes do not?+

Three things that genuinely reduce the work. Physics, chemistry and biology studied as separate subjects, which is the structure the IGCSE separate-science route assumes rather than a combined award. English developed through both language and literature work, which is the closest thing to a clean transfer in this move. And internally assessed project components, so the idea that a mark can come from work produced over time is already familiar. Each of those shortens a transition plan rather than removing the need for one.

Does ICSE English map onto IGCSE First Language English?+

Closely, which is why English is usually the wrong place to spend money in the first term. The reading range, vocabulary and comfort with extended writing largely match what the paper assumes. What is new is the task conventions: directed writing is assessed on audience, form and purpose as well as on quality, so a well-written letter that reads like an essay loses marks unrelated to ability. Writing the same task twice a fortnight apart, with the criteria beside both versions, fixes that quickly.

My child studied the three sciences separately. Does that help at IGCSE?+

Substantially, and it should influence the placement. The IGCSE separate-science route assumes exactly that depth, so an ICSE student entering 0625, 0620 and 0610 is working at a familiar level. The risk is being placed on a co-ordinated double award or a single combined award for timetable reasons, which narrows the content range and the achievable breadth for a student who has already built it. Ask the school whether the separate-science route is available before accepting a combined placement.

Does ICSE project work prepare a student for IGCSE coursework?+

Partly, and the benefit arrives later than at IGCSE itself. Most IGCSE subjects are assessed by terminal written papers, with the Cambridge sciences adding a practical component rather than a coursework one, so there is often nothing directly comparable to carry over. Where the habit pays is further on: at A-Level coursework or at IB Internal Assessment, where producing assessed work over time against criteria is the core demand. It is worth recognising rather than rebuilding when that point comes.

Which IGCSE codes should we be looking at?+

Confirm them from the statement of entry rather than from the subject names, because Cambridge 0580 and Pearson 4MA1 are both called IGCSE Mathematics and set different papers. For an ICSE student the likely set is 0580 or 4MA1 in mathematics, 0625, 0620 and 0610 or their Pearson equivalents in the sciences, 0500 or 4EA1 in English, and separate history and geography codes. Additional Mathematics, 0606 or 4PM1, is worth asking about for a strong mathematician.

Will my child find the IGCSE workload lighter than ICSE?+

In subject count, often comparable, since a Dubai Year 11 typically sits eight or nine. In content volume per subject, sometimes lighter. In the way answers must be constructed, heavier, because the published mark scheme pays for a visible route to the answer and for responses pitched to the command word. Students frequently report the content as manageable and the papers as unexpectedly particular, which is the right way round: particular is learnable in weeks whereas content gaps take terms.

What does the first marked IGCSE paper usually reveal?+

A recognisable distribution for this background. Content largely present, often conspicuously so in the sciences. Method marks missing in mathematics and chemistry calculations because the working was mental. Command words answered by instinct, so an accurate account appears where an explanation or comparison was wanted. And the practical paper close to blank, because its conventions have never been taught. Three of those four are conventions rather than knowledge, which is good news and is exactly why the baseline paper comes first.

How do we measure grade movement in a transition term?+

Two comparable papers, same board, same tier, same conditions, a month apart, with their raw marks written down side by side. That is the whole method, and it removes most of the disagreement a family has in a term when everyone is anxious and nobody has data. Support it with a topic list that should be shorter each month and an error log that should be narrowing. A first-term grade measures familiarity with the system rather than ability, so it is a poor instrument here.

Is the ICSE written and internal split similar to how IGCSE works?+

Not really, and the difference is worth knowing. ICSE subjects commonly combine an externally marked written paper with an internally assessed component. Most IGCSE subjects are assessed by terminal written papers alone, with the Cambridge sciences adding a practical or alternative-to-practical component rather than coursework. So a student who relied partly on internal marks to lift a subject total will find the written papers carrying more of the grade, which argues for the conventions work being done early rather than late.

What paper conventions does an ICSE student still need to learn?+

Four, and all four are shared across subjects so fixing them improves every paper at once. Written method, because the scheme pays for the route and not only the destination. Command words, which redirect knowledge the student already has. Accepted wording, especially in biology, where a correct idea in loose language earns nothing. And the Cambridge practical paper conventions, which are entirely new in form: results tables with units in the headings, instrument precision, scales, lines of best fit, and specific sources of error.

Do you come to our home in Dubai for these sessions?+

No. IB Gram does not run home visits anywhere in the UAE, since that is an India-only service, and all sessions are delivered online over live video. For a family mid-relocation that is a practical benefit: the tutor and the accumulating record of marked scripts and raw marks stay continuous regardless of which community you settle in, and the tutor is chosen for knowing your child's exact specification rather than for living within driving distance of your building.

Which school year should my child join after ICSE?+

Dubai schools place by age in most cases, which usually puts a Class 8 leaver into Year 9, a Class 9 leaver into Year 10 and a student leaving during Class 10 into Year 11. The first two are clean entries where the IGCSE course has not begun or begins from the start. The third is harder because part of the syllabus has been taught in the student's absence. Ask the school in writing which year the student joins, on what basis, and what has already been covered.

Does ICSE mathematics reach the Extended tier content?+

Generally yes on content, which is why an ICSE student is usually an Extended or Higher tier candidate rather than a Core one. The breadth and algebraic demand of ICSE mathematics supports the longer multi-step questions that the higher tier sets. The gap is written method rather than content: the mark scheme awards marks for the visible route, and a student who computes efficiently loses them until the habit changes. Produce a marked Extended paper under timing to make that case to the school.

What happens to the second language ICSE required?+

Two possibilities, and both are worth checking early. If the Dubai school offers that language as an IGCSE subject, an existing strength converts into a graded subject on a crowded timetable, which is a good use of it. If it does not, the student effectively has a spare option slot, which is an opportunity rather than a loss provided somebody notices in time to choose deliberately rather than by default. Ask at admission, because timetables harden quickly once the year starts.

How long does the adjustment take and what does it cost?+

Four to six sessions for the conventions, bracketed by two comparable marked papers so the movement is visible, plus a separate four-session block on the Cambridge practical paper for a science student. At published Dubai rates of AED 150 to 300 an hour for a qualified online tutor those are roughly AED 600 to 1,800 and AED 600 to 1,200 respectively. Those are market figures from Unitors and Bestimate rather than ours, and any quote should state session length and whether marking is included.

Baseline first, then the conventions

This is one of the better-positioned curriculum moves available, and the plan should reflect that. Read board, code, tier and series off the statement of entry, ask whether the separate-science route and the second language are available, and get the exam centre's own deadline in writing. Then have your child sit one whole paper of that exact specification under timing and self-mark it against the published scheme. Book the free trial lesson, bring the script, and ask for coverage gaps and conventions gaps as two separate lists. For an ICSE student the first list is usually short and the second is usually quick.
