CBSE to IGCSE Transition in Dubai

A CBSE to IGCSE transition in Dubai is mostly a question about papers. The content overlaps heavily; what differs is the anatomy of the assessment: Core and Extended tiers with different grade ceilings, multiple-choice and structured components, a separate practical paper that has no CBSE equivalent, and a published mark scheme that pays for a visible method. This page works through each in turn. Sessions run online, one to one.

  • Subject codes named, because 0580 and 4MA1 are different papers
  • Core and Extended tiers carry different grade ceilings
  • The Ministry counts five subjects, excluding Arabic and Islamic education
  • UAE candidates sit the June and November series

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

Same content, different paper

A student transferring from a CBSE school into an IGCSE programme in Dubai usually has the content. In mathematics and the sciences the overlap at this level is substantial, and in numerical work CBSE training tends to produce speed and accuracy that serves an IGCSE paper very well. What arrives as a shock is the structure of the examination and the mark scheme behind it, and that shock is entirely fixable in weeks rather than terms.

Four things are new. First, the tier: Cambridge splits several subjects into Core and Extended, and Pearson tiers mathematics as Foundation and Higher, with different grade ceilings on each route. Second, the component mix: multiple-choice papers, structured papers and in the Cambridge sciences a separate practical or alternative-to-practical paper carrying a real share of the grade. Third, the published mark scheme, which pays for a visible route to the answer rather than for the answer alone. Fourth, the grade scale, reported 9 to 1 or A* to G depending on specification.

The practical consequence shows up on the first marked paper and it looks like a content problem. A student who computes correctly and writes one line loses method marks. A student who writes an accurate account where the command word asked for an explanation loses reasoning marks. A student who has never drawn a results table to the scheme's conventions loses almost everything on the practical paper. None of those is a knowledge gap, and treating them as one is how a term gets spent on re-teaching chemistry a student already knows.

The second thing worth settling immediately is the syllabus code. Cambridge 0580 and Pearson 4MA1 are both called IGCSE Mathematics and set different papers of different lengths with different tier structures. A family who arrived from a different system has no reason to know this, and Dubai households frequently contain children on both boards. The statement of entry carries the board, the code and the tier for every subject, and reading it takes thirty seconds.

Third is the administrative calendar. UAE candidates sit the Cambridge June series with November available, and the Pearson May/June window with a November window. The February and March series visible in search results is offered by Cambridge to India only, which matters here because families moving from India arrive carrying that calendar in memory. Entry deadlines are set by the exam centre, usually the school, and fall months before the papers.

Sessions are delivered online, one to one, over live video with the script on a shared screen. IB Gram does not run home visits in Dubai, since that is an India-only service, and for a family still settling after a move the online format means the same tutor and the same marked record continue regardless of which community the family ends up living in.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Where a student joins determines whether this is a paper-technique job or a coverage job, and those are priced and planned very differently. These are the three entry points Dubai families meet.

Year 9Ages 13-14 · after CBSE Class 8

Joining before the IGCSE course

The easiest and cheapest version of this move. A full year exists before the IGCSE syllabus begins, which is time to build the habit of writing method out, to meet a published mark scheme for the first time, and to make option choices on evidence rather than on guesswork.

Dubai schools confirm IGCSE option choices during Year 9, often in the second term. A student who has just arrived and whose previous school taught different subjects is choosing blind unless somebody puts a marked IGCSE-style task in front of them first.

Year 10Ages 14-15 · after CBSE Class 9

Joining at the start of the IGCSE course

A clean entry point. The syllabus starts from the beginning, so the work is the paper adjustment rather than catching up: tiers, command words, written method, and in the Cambridge sciences the practical component. Four to six marked tasks usually settle the whole adjustment.

Tier decisions for Core and Extended, or Foundation and Higher, are usually confirmed during or at the end of Year 10 in Dubai schools. A marked paper of the correct tier is better evidence for that conversation than a transferred CBSE report.

Year 11Ages 15-16 · after CBSE Class 9 or during Class 10

Joining partway through

The hard case, because the examination series is fixed and some of the syllabus has been taught in the student's absence. Coverage gaps and technique gaps both exist here and they must be separated, because they need different amounts of time and the plan should say which is which.

For a mid-Year-11 arrival in Dubai the first question is administrative: which board, code and tier the school has entered or will enter the student for, and whether the centre's deadline has passed. That answer decides whether June or November is the realistic target.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Each subject below is paired with its codes on both boards and with the specific adjustment a CBSE-trained student needs in it, which is what makes a short plan possible.

Mathematics

Cambridge 0580 Core and Extended; Pearson 4MA1 Foundation and Higher

Content transfers strongly from CBSE. The adjustment is written method, because the scheme awards marks for a recognisable route and a student who works mentally discards them. Extended and Higher papers also reward algebraic persistence on multi-step questions rather than speed.

Physics

Cambridge 0625; Pearson 4PH1

Numerical fluency transfers directly. What is new is units and significant figures treated as marks, the explicit statement of the principle in use, and on Cambridge codes a separate practical component that no CBSE practical resembles.

Chemistry

Cambridge 0620; Pearson 4CH1

Mole calculations and equation work are familiar ground. The marks are in the conventions: state symbols, named conditions and reagents, and visible working on calculations. All three are quick to fix and all three are invisible in a CBSE report.

Biology

Cambridge 0610; Pearson 4BI1

CBSE builds strong recall and IGCSE rewards precision of wording. The rate of photosynthesis increases because light intensity increases earns the mark where the plant grows better earns nothing, so practice must be done with the published scheme open.

Co-ordinated and Combined Sciences

Cambridge 0654 and 0653; Pearson Science Double Award

A common placement for a transferring student, and a frequent source of misdirected practice because the paper pattern differs from the separate sciences. Confirm which award the student is entered for before any past paper is downloaded.

First Language English

Cambridge 0500; Pearson 4EA1

Directed writing on audience, form and purpose, plus reading analysis. A CBSE student with strong English can still lose marks heavily here on form rather than language, and comparing two of their own timed attempts shows the fix faster than reading model answers.

English as a Second Language

Cambridge 0510 and 0511

A different qualification with comprehension and functional writing rather than literary analysis. Placement between this and First Language English is made at entry and has a real effect on the achievable grade, so ask the school how it decides.

Additional Mathematics

Cambridge 0606; Pearson 4PM1

Often a good fit for a CBSE-trained student heading towards A-Level mathematics or Higher Level IB, because the algebraic demand suits the training. Tutor coverage is thinner than in core mathematics, so ask early rather than late.

Business Studies and Economics

Cambridge 0450 and 0455; Pearson 4BS1 and 4EC1

Frequently new subjects at this point. The content starts from the beginning, which is manageable; the immediate demand is applying an answer to the named firm or economy in the question stem rather than reproducing a general definition.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways to run this move, all online, each aimed at a different part of the adjustment.

Specification check and baseline paper

A short first engagement that reads board, syllabus code and tier off the statement of entry, confirms the series and the centre's deadline, then has the student sit one whole paper of that exact specification under timing. The tutor marks it to the published scheme and separates coverage gaps from technique gaps in writing.

  • Board, code, tier and series confirmed in writing
  • One correct-specification paper sat under real timing
  • Coverage gaps and technique gaps listed separately
  • A short note you can take to the new school

Paper-technique block

Four to six sessions on the mark scheme conventions a CBSE-trained student has not met: written method, command words, units and significant figures, accepted biological wording, and the application of an answer to a named context. Each session sets and marks work, and the before and after scripts sit together.

  • Written method drilled on the student's own working
  • Command words matched before any answer is written
  • Accepted wording learned from the scheme, not guessed
  • Two comparable marked papers at either end of the block

Practical paper block

Four sessions on the Cambridge alternative-to-practical paper, which needs no laboratory and which a CBSE student has no equivalent for. Results table conventions, instrument precision, scales, lines of best fit and specific sources of error. The highest-return block available to a transferring science student.

  • Fifteen results tables drawn to the scheme's conventions
  • Instrument reading practised, including the half-division rule
  • Specific errors and improvements, never human error
  • A marked paper before and after, same conditions

IB and IGCSE tutors available to students in Dubai

The tutors below name the board and syllabus code they teach rather than the subject alone, which matters at this moment more than at any other. A student arriving from CBSE needs practice on the exact specification their new school has entered them for, and the code is the only reliable way to identify it.

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

The anatomy of an IGCSE paper, for a student who has not seen one

A CBSE Class 10 subject is typically assessed through a written examination against prescribed material with an internal component alongside. An IGCSE subject is assessed through a set of components with published weightings, and the set differs by subject and by board. In the Cambridge separate sciences there is usually a multiple-choice paper, a main theory paper carrying the largest share, and a practical component that is either a laboratory test or a written alternative. In mathematics there are two papers whose weighting is unequal.

Knowing those weightings changes how revision time should be allocated, and almost nobody checks them. A student spending equal time on three components when one carries half the grade and another a fifth is misallocating hours, and the component that most often gets neglected is the practical one, precisely because it looks as though it needs equipment.

The second structural feature is the tier. Core and Extended in Cambridge, Foundation and Higher in Pearson mathematics, sit different papers and reach different grades. Core has a ceiling below the top grades; Extended reaches them but has a floor below which a candidate is ungraded. A transferring student placed on one tier and practising the other is building confidence in nothing, and this happens constantly because past papers are downloaded by subject name.

The table sets out the Cambridge separate-science pattern as the worked example, because it is the one most commonly mis-revised by transferring students. Confirm the exact weightings for your child's code and series against the published syllabus document, since specifications are revised and a figure from an old paper set may no longer apply.

02

Mapping the subjects, with the codes

Subject names do not map cleanly between the two systems, and the mismatches are where plans go wrong. CBSE Science at Class 10 is a single subject covering physics, chemistry and biology; in IGCSE that student may be entered for three separate sciences, for a co-ordinated double award, or for a combined single award, and the three have different paper patterns. CBSE Social Science splits into history, geography, civics and economics; IGCSE offers those as separate subjects with separate codes.

Mathematics is the cleanest transfer and still needs the code. Cambridge 0580 and Pearson 4MA1 are different papers, and a student may additionally be entered for Cambridge 0606 Additional Mathematics, which suits CBSE-trained algebra particularly well and is worth asking about for a student heading towards A-Level mathematics or Higher Level IB.

Languages need the most care. English divides into First Language English and English as a Second Language, which are separate qualifications with different task structures, and placement between them is made at entry. A third language such as Hindi may be available as an IGCSE subject in some schools, which can convert an existing strength into a reliable grade, and it is worth asking at admission rather than in the second term.

The table maps the common routes. Treat the middle column as the question to ask the school rather than as the answer, because which award a student is entered for is a school decision recorded on the statement of entry.

03

Where the marks actually go for a CBSE-trained student

  • Write every step: the scheme pays for the route, not only the answer
  • Read the command word before the question stem, every time
  • Practise with the mark scheme open, especially in biology
  • Treat the practical paper as a new subject, because it is

The pattern on a first marked IGCSE paper is predictable enough to anticipate. The largest loss is unwritten method in mathematics and in chemistry calculations. CBSE training rewards reaching the correct answer efficiently, and IGCSE mark schemes award marks for the recognisable route, so a page of correct answers can score well below its apparent quality. This is the most recoverable loss available and it changes inside three marked papers.

The second loss is command words. A student answering by instinct produces accurate accounts of processes where the question asked for an explanation, a judgement or a comparison. The published command word conventions are learnable in two sessions, and because they are shared across subjects, fixing them improves every paper at once rather than one at a time.

The third is wording precision, which bites hardest in biology. The accepted terminology in a mark scheme cannot be guessed, and a student with excellent understanding can write a loose but correct sentence that earns nothing. The only remedy is practising with the scheme open, which students resist because it feels like cheating and is in fact the single most efficient way to learn what is being counted.

The fourth is the practical component, which is not a loss so much as an absence. A CBSE student has done practicals and has never sat a written paper about practical work, so results table conventions, instrument precision and the distinction between a specific error and generic human error are all new. That is four sessions of work and it protects a real share of the science grade.

04

The practical paper with no equivalent

On Cambridge science codes the practical component is assessed either by a laboratory test or by a written alternative-to-practical paper, and the written version carries a real share of the grade while needing no equipment at all. Transferring families skip it because the name suggests a laboratory, and a skipped component is the most expensive thing on any revision plan.

What it actually assesses is a short, trainable list. Drawing a results table with the quantity and its unit in the column heading. Reading an instrument to the precision the instrument allows, including the half-division convention on a thermometer or measuring cylinder. Choosing a scale that uses most of the available grid. Plotting accurately and drawing a line of best fit rather than joining the points. And naming a specific source of error with a specific improvement, where human error and do more trials earn nothing.

None of that is science knowledge, which is why it responds so quickly. A student who has drawn fifteen results tables to the scheme's conventions and read ten instruments at correct precision will not lose those marks again in any science they sit. For a transferring student this is the single best value block on the whole plan, because the gap is total and the fix is mechanical.

Where a school enters candidates for a laboratory practical test instead, the handling practice belongs at school and a tutor can still work on the planning, the recording and the error analysis in writing. Confirm which of the two components your child is entered for before buying anything, because the answer changes the preparation entirely and it is recorded on the statement of entry.

What the Ministry of Education counts, and the mistake one ranking page makes

Equivalency is the process by which the UAE Ministry of Education recognises a foreign secondary certificate, and families transferring into the British track discover it late. For that track the published requirement is five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates with a grade of no less than E or grade 3, together with either one accredited subject at Advanced Level at no less than E or two accredited subjects at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade.

Two details inside that rule change what a family should enter. Arabic and Islamic education are not included among the five required subjects, which means a student counting them towards the total may be a subject short without knowing it. And the number is five, not six. One page currently ranking for UAE equivalency queries states that candidates must take six IGCSE subjects, which would have a family paying for an entry they do not need.

This matters particularly for a transferring student, because subject entries are being decided at the moment of transfer and it is cheaper to enter the right five from the start than to add one later. It is also worth noting that the requirement is about accredited subjects at a minimum grade rather than about a particular combination, so the question to ask the school is which subjects on the proposed timetable will count.

Two cautions belong with this. Equivalency is something the Ministry performs and no tutoring service does, so nobody should present it as an outcome they can secure, and tutoring is not a requirement for it. And the table below sets out the published British-track position only; no IB points figure appears anywhere here, because none could be verified from an official Ministry source for this page.

06

Tier, grade ceiling and the decision window

Tier is the decision transferring families most often make by default, because it is taken by the school from evidence that arrived with the student in a different format. A CBSE report expressed as percentages does not tell an IGCSE department whether a student belongs on Core or Extended, and the default is sometimes cautious. For a strong CBSE mathematician placed on Core, that caution costs the top grades.

The ceiling is the fact that makes this consequential. Core sits below the top grades; Extended reaches them and has a floor below which a candidate is ungraded rather than awarded a low pass. So a comfortable Core result and a struggling Extended result are not two points on one scale, and the choice has to be made on evidence of performance under real timing on the correct tier.

The evidence is cheap to produce and schools do look at it. Have the student sit one full paper of each tier under proper timing, marked to the published scheme, and compare the raw marks and the pattern of losses. A student scoring comfortably on Extended with losses that are all method and wording belongs there. A student leaving whole questions blank on Extended may be better served by a secure Core grade, if the onward route permits it.

The decision window matters as much as the decision. Tiers are confirmed during or at the end of Year 10 in most Dubai schools, and entries are then submitted at the centre's deadline months before the papers. Ask the school when the tier is confirmed, whether it can still be changed, and what evidence it will consider, then produce that evidence rather than an argument.

07

Arriving mid-course, and which series is realistic

A student joining partway through Year 11 faces a fixed examination series and a syllabus partly taught in their absence, and the honest plan starts by separating the two problems. Coverage gaps need teaching, which takes time measured in terms. Technique gaps need marked practice, which takes weeks. A plan that treats both as one undifferentiated amount of tutoring will disappoint on a schedule nobody stated.

The series question follows from that separation. UAE candidates sit the Cambridge June series with November as the second route, and the Pearson May/June window with a November window. For a student arriving with substantial coverage missing, entering the November series instead of June buys several extra months of teaching, at the cost of a confirmed grade only in the middle of the following January. Pearson's November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026, which is the published pattern to plan against.

Families moving from India should note one specific trap. The February and March sitting that Cambridge offers to India only is not available to a candidate entered through a UAE centre, and a plan built around those dates aims at a sitting the student cannot enter. This is a common and entirely understandable error, because the Indian calendar is correct for where the family was.

The deadline that binds is the exam centre's own, not the board's published date, because the centre has to collate and submit entries. Ask the school's exams officer for that date in writing in the first week. A missed entry deadline is the only failure in this process that no amount of preparation can repair, and it is the one most likely to catch a family in the middle of a relocation.

08

What a session fixes, and what to refuse

In the first fortnight a session can fix the specification question, which is worth more than any teaching in it. Establishing board, code, tier and series from the statement of entry, and confirming the centre's deadline, routinely prevents a term of practice on the wrong papers. For a family who arrived from a different system, that half hour is the highest-value part of the whole engagement.

After that, sessions fix habits quickly. Writing method out in full. Reading the command word first. Using the scheme's accepted wording in biology. Drawing a results table to convention. Applying an answer to the named firm or economy rather than reciting a definition. All of these move within two or three marked papers because the student can see the difference between their own two attempts, and none of them requires new content.

What a session cannot do is teach a term of missing syllabus in a fortnight. Where a mid-year arrival has genuine coverage gaps, the plan has to state how long they will take and what will not be reached by the series date, and a family told that early makes better decisions, including the decision to enter November rather than June.

Refuse three things. A plan that proposes re-teaching mathematics to a CBSE-trained student, since content is the part that transfers best. Any offer to supply past papers and mark schemes as downloads, because they belong to Cambridge and Pearson and private copies are frequently from superseded specifications or retyped with errors. And any outcome claim: no success rate, average grade or satisfaction figure appears on this page, because none could be produced with a sample size, a date and a method.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Dubai

This move concentrates in the parts of Dubai with the largest Indian-curriculum populations, and the notes below are about the practical consequences of arriving there mid-course.

Al Nahda and Al Qusais

Indian, British and IB school provision within a short radius, so a household can move between systems without moving home. Children on CBSE and on IGCSE under one roof need practice folders labelled by board, which prevents a term of confusion.

Karama, Oud Metha and Bur Dubai

Long-established Indian schools and several British-curriculum options nearby. Students moving between them mid-key-stage are common, and the statement of entry rather than the school's website is what identifies the specification.

International City and Silicon Oasis

High turnover with many families arriving directly from India, including mid-year. This is where coverage gaps are most likely to be real rather than apparent, and where separating them from technique gaps matters most.

Mirdif and Al Warqa

Large eastern communities and long commutes, so weekday evening sessions run late. A weekend slot for a timed paper plus a short midweek session on the practical paper conventions is the pattern that holds.

Jumeirah Village Circle and Sports City

Apartment communities with a steady flow of new arrivals. Students are often placed by age, which can mean joining Year 11 with part of the syllabus already taught, and that needs saying plainly in the first written note.

Deira and Hor Al Anz

Dense school provision and a strong tuition-centre presence. The question to put to any local provider is the same everywhere: price per student per hour, group size, and whether work is marked individually.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Photograph the statement of entry

Board, syllabus code and tier for every subject, plus the series. Then ask the exams officer for the centre's administrative zone and its own entry deadline. For a family arriving from a different system this is the step that prevents the most expensive error available in IGCSE preparation.

  2. 02

Ask which science award and which English

Three separate sciences, a co-ordinated double award or a single combined award; and First Language English or English as a Second Language. Both decisions are made at entry, both change the paper pattern completely, and neither is obvious from a timetable that lists subjects by name.

  3. 03

Sit one paper of the exact specification

Correct board, code and tier, under full timing in one sitting, then self-marked against the published scheme before anyone else sees it. The tutor re-marks independently and separates coverage gaps from technique gaps in writing, which is the distinction the whole plan rests on.

  4. 04

Fix the conventions before the content

Written method, command words, accepted wording and the practical paper conventions, in that order. These are shared across subjects, so they improve every paper at once, and they are invisible in a transferred report expressed as percentages.

  5. 05

Decide the series on the evidence

If coverage gaps are substantial, model what June can realistically reach against what November buys, remembering that a November grade is confirmed only in the middle of the following January. Make that decision with the marked paper in front of you, before the centre's deadline passes.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The code comes before the tutor

Matching starts from the syllabus code on the statement of entry, because 0580 and 4MA1 are different examinations and a transferring family has no reason to know that. In Dubai households with children on both boards, labelling practice folders by code prevents a term of confusion.

Content is treated as a strength, not a gap

CBSE builds broad coverage and fast accurate computation, and both transfer. A plan that bills for re-teaching mathematics is charging for the best thing the student already has. The money belongs in conventions, command words and the practical paper.

The practical paper is named and taught

The Cambridge alternative-to-practical component needs no laboratory, carries a real share of the grade, and has no CBSE equivalent at all. Fifteen results tables drawn to convention is the best-value block available to a transferring science student.

The five-subject rule, published correctly

The Ministry's British track counts five accredited subjects at no less than E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded. One ranking page says six, which would cost a family an unnecessary entry. Equivalency remains the Ministry's process, not ours.

The right series, not the remembered one

UAE candidates sit June and November; the February and March sitting is offered by Cambridge to India only. Families arriving from India carry the other calendar in memory for good reason, and correcting it early is worth more than any single lesson.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

Which IGCSE subjects correspond to my child's CBSE subjects?+

Mathematics maps cleanly, as Cambridge 0580 or Pearson 4MA1, with Additional Mathematics worth asking about for a strong performer. CBSE Science at Class 10 is a single subject, and in IGCSE that student may be entered for three separate sciences, a co-ordinated double award, or a single combined award, each with a different paper pattern. CBSE Social Science splits into separate history, geography and economics subjects with separate codes. English divides into First Language English and English as a Second Language. Confirm every one from the statement of entry.

Our new school has put my child on Core. Should we challenge that?+

Decide it from a marked paper rather than from a transferred report. A CBSE report expressed as percentages does not tell an IGCSE department whether a student belongs on Extended, and the default placement is sometimes cautious, which caps a strong mathematician unnecessarily. Have the student sit one full paper of each tier under timing, marked to the scheme, and compare both the raw marks and the pattern of losses. Core sits below the top grades; Extended reaches them but has a floor below which a candidate is ungraded.

Which school year should my child join when transferring from CBSE?+

Schools place by age in most cases, which usually puts a Class 8 leaver into Year 9, a Class 9 leaver into Year 10 and a student leaving during Class 10 into Year 11. The first two are clean entries where the IGCSE syllabus has not started or starts from the beginning. The third is the hard case, because part of the syllabus has been taught in the student's absence. Ask the school in writing which year the student joins and on what basis, and what has already been covered.

What is the alternative-to-practical paper and why has my child never seen one?+

It is a written paper about practical work, used on Cambridge science codes where a school does not enter candidates for a laboratory practical test, and it carries a real share of the grade. A CBSE student has done practicals and has never sat a written paper assessing them, so the whole component is new. What it tests is specific and trainable: results table conventions with units in the headings, instrument precision including the half-division rule, scales, lines of best fit, and specific errors rather than generic human error.

How many IGCSE subjects will the Ministry of Education actually count?+

On the published British-track requirement, five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade of no less than E or grade 3, plus either one accredited Advanced Level subject at no less than E or two Advanced Subsidiary Level subjects at the same grade. Arabic and Islamic education are not included among the five, so a student counting them may be a subject short. One ranking page states that six subjects are required, which would mean paying for an entry nobody needs. Verify your own case with the Ministry directly.

Does CBSE mathematics cover the IGCSE Extended syllabus?+

Most of it, which is why a strong CBSE mathematician is usually an Extended candidate rather than a Core one. The content overlap at this level is substantial and the algebraic training suits the longer multi-step Extended questions well. The gap is not content but written method: the mark scheme awards marks for the recognisable route, and a student who computes mentally and writes one line discards marks they have already earned. That habit changes inside three marked papers, which is the cheapest improvement available.

My child's English is strong. First Language English or English as a Second Language?+

Ask the school how it decides, because the placement is made at entry and has a real effect on the achievable grade. They are separate qualifications: First Language English assesses directed writing on audience, form and purpose plus reading analysis, while English as a Second Language assesses comprehension and functional writing. Strong conversational and academic English does not automatically mean First Language English is right, and a student placed in the wrong one loses a grade for reasons unrelated to their ability. Offer a piece of their own analytical writing if it helps.

What happens to Hindi, Sanskrit or a third language?+

Some Dubai schools offer a third language as an IGCSE subject, which can convert an existing strength into a reliable graded subject, and that is a better use of it than letting it lapse. Availability depends entirely on what the school timetables, so ask at admission rather than in the second term, when the timetable has hardened. Bear in mind separately that Arabic and Islamic education are excluded from the Ministry's five-subject count for equivalency, which affects how the rest of the timetable should be planned.

Why are my child's correct answers scoring low marks?+

Almost always one of three conventions rather than a knowledge problem. Unwritten method, because the mark scheme pays for the route to the answer and only the destination was supplied. Command words answered by instinct, so an accurate account appears where an explanation, judgement or comparison was wanted. Or imprecise wording in biology, where the accepted terminology cannot be guessed and a loose but correct sentence earns nothing. All three are habits, all three are shared across subjects, and all three move within two or three marked papers.

When does the entry deadline fall if we transfer mid-year?+

The deadline that binds is the exam centre's own, not the board's published date, because the centre collates and submits the entries. Ask the school's exams officer for that date in writing in your first week, since it falls months before the papers and a missed entry is the one failure no amount of preparation repairs. Note also that the February and March sitting Cambridge offers to India only is not available through a UAE centre, so a plan carried over from India needs re-aiming at June or November.

Do you come to our home in Dubai for IGCSE transition sessions?+

No. IB Gram does not run home visits anywhere in the UAE, since that is an India-only service, and all sessions are delivered online over live video. For a family still settling after a move that is a practical advantage: the same tutor and the same accumulated marked record continue regardless of which community you end up in, and the tutor is chosen for knowing your child's exact specification rather than for living within driving distance. Scripts are shared on screen and annotated live.

Parents keep telling us one system is tougher than the other. Which is it?+

Differently shaped, which is why the comparison rarely helps. IGCSE covers somewhat less ground in some subjects and asks for more in the way answers are constructed: visible method, command-word accuracy, precise accepted wording, and a written practical component on Cambridge science codes. A CBSE student typically finds the content comfortable and the paper conventions unfamiliar. That is a good position to be in, because conventions are learnable in weeks while content gaps take terms.

How many sessions does the paper-technique adjustment take?+

Four to six in most cases, and the output should be two comparable marked papers at either end so the movement is visible rather than asserted. A separate four-session block on the Cambridge practical paper is worth adding for a science student, because that component is entirely new and the fix is mechanical. At published Dubai rates of AED 150 to 300 an hour for a qualified online tutor those blocks are roughly AED 600 to 1,800 each, and any quote should state whether marking is included.

Will IGCSE be accepted for sixth form or IB Diploma entry in Dubai?+

IGCSE is the standard route into both A-Level and IB Diploma programmes in this city, and schools set their own entry requirements, usually expressed as grades in specified subjects. Ask each school directly for its published requirement for the intake in question and keep a copy, because requirements differ between schools and between years. For mathematics in particular, the IGCSE tier matters: a Core or Foundation route leaves content that Diploma mathematics and Diploma physics both assume.

What can a session realistically fix in the first fortnight?+

The specification question first, which is worth more than any teaching. Establishing board, code, tier and series from the statement of entry and confirming the centre's deadline prevents a term of practice on the wrong papers. After that, a baseline paper marked to the scheme separates coverage gaps from technique gaps in writing. Those two outputs, obtained in two weeks, change how the rest of the year is spent far more than two weeks of subject teaching would at the same cost.

Read the entry form, then fix the conventions

This transition rewards an administrative half hour more than almost any tutoring. Find the statement of entry and read off the board, syllabus code, tier and series for every subject, ask which science award and which English your child is entered for, and get the exam centre's own deadline in writing. Then have your child sit one paper of exactly that specification under timing and self-mark it against the published scheme. Book the free trial lesson, bring the script, and ask for the coverage gaps and the technique gaps to be listed separately. In this move the second list is almost always the short one.
