American Curriculum to IB Transition in Dubai

An American curriculum to IB transition in Dubai changes what a grade is made of. A GPA accumulates across a semester from homework, quizzes and participation; a Diploma subject grade comes from terminal papers plus one piece of criterion-marked work. This page sets out what that does to a strong student, how AP compares with Higher Level, and the weekly evidence that shows the adjustment happening. Sessions run online, one to one.

  • A GPA and a grade out of seven are built from different evidence
  • AP is a one-year single-subject exam; Higher Level is a two-year course
  • Ministry equivalency on the American track names SAT and English scores
  • Every session leaves a marked artefact with a date

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

Same student, different arithmetic

A student moving from an American programme into the IB Diploma in Dubai is usually not weaker than their transcript suggests. They are being measured differently. An American high-school grade accumulates across a semester from assignments submitted, quizzes passed, tests sat and participation, and the resulting GPA moves gradually and rewards consistency. A Diploma subject grade comes almost entirely from terminal written papers, with one internally assessed piece marked against published criteria, and it is reported as a single number from one to seven.

That difference has two immediate effects. The first is that consistency stops being currency. A student who always submitted work on time and never performed brilliantly under a two-hour clock has been well rewarded for two years and now meets a system where the clock is most of the grade. The second is that a weak week no longer costs anything and a weak paper costs everything, which is a different kind of pressure and takes a term to absorb.

The third effect is the one families notice at the first report. A 3.9 GPA and a first-term Diploma profile of fives is not a decline; it is the same student measured on a scale where a five is a solid, widely accepted result and a seven is awarded to a small proportion of candidates globally. No conversion table exists between the two, and any site offering one is inventing it. What does exist is a record of marked work, and that is what this page is organised around.

There are real strengths to carry across, and they are worth naming. American programmes tend to develop presentation skills, collaborative work, extended project experience and a willingness to attempt a task without a worked example in front of them. The Diploma's Internal Assessments, the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge all reward exactly that, and students from this background often outperform their classmates on the internally assessed components while struggling on the papers.

So the plan is asymmetric, and that is the point. Spend on the papers: command terms, written method, pacing across a two-hour clock, and the habit of answering at the depth the instruction demands. Spend less on the internally assessed work, where the student probably has an advantage already. A provider who proposes an identical plan for every transition has not looked at where this particular cohort loses marks.

Sessions are delivered online, one to one, over live video. IB Gram does not run home visits in Dubai, since that is an India-only service. For this transition the online format matters practically: timed papers are sat and then annotated live on screen, the raw marks accumulate in one file, and families who may move again keep both the tutor and the record.

At a glance

  • GPA accumulates; a Diploma grade comes mostly from terminal papers
  • No conversion exists between the two, and none is offered here
  • Project and presentation strengths transfer to the internal components
  • Spend on paper technique, not on the coursework they already handle
  • Delivered online, one to one; no home visits anywhere in the UAE
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

When a student moves decides how much of this is adjustment and how much is coverage. These are the three entry points Dubai families deal with.

MYPAges 14-16 · Grades 9-10

Moving before the Diploma

A student arriving into the Middle Years Programme meets criterion marking with two years to absorb it, which is much the easiest version of this move. The Personal Project at the end of year five is the first real test, and it plays to an American-programme student's project experience rather than against it.

Dubai IB schools admit mid-phase into the MYP regularly, so a Grade 9 arrival may be assessed against criteria the cohort has used since Grade 6. That argues for explaining criteria explicitly in the first term rather than letting the student infer them from marks.

DP1Ages 16-17 · Grade 11

Moving at the start of the Diploma

The cleanest entry: a student completing Grade 10 and starting the first Diploma year has nothing in progress and a full two years ahead. Content is largely continuous in mathematics and the sciences, and the whole adjustment is to terminal assessment, which is what a transition block should target.

American-programme and Diploma school years in Dubai broadly align, which removes the calendar problem that affects moves from some other systems. That makes a summer or first-term block straightforward to schedule and genuinely useful.

Mid-DiplomaAges 16-18

Moving into Grade 11 part way, or after it

Harder, and the difficulty is structural. A student joining DP1 mid-year arrives with Internal Assessments underway, an Extended Essay question expected and Theory of Knowledge several months in. Joining DP2 from an American Grade 11 means two years of content in one, which few schools will accept and fewer students should attempt.

For any mid-course arrival in Dubai, the first step is a written list from the coordinator of what the cohort has submitted and which deadlines have passed. Nothing in a plan is reliable until that exists, and families are often several weeks in before anyone asks.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Each subject below pairs the American-programme background with the Diploma entry point and names the adjustment, which for this cohort is almost always about the paper rather than the content.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

An American pre-calculus or calculus background covers much of the content and rarely trains the writing. The scheme pays for a visible route to the answer, and the non-calculator paper is often entirely new to a student who has worked with a graphing calculator throughout.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Statistics and modelling sit closer to an American statistics course, and the demand that is new is written commentary: what the result means in context, what the model assumes, where it stops being valid. That writing is the work rather than the computation.

Biology

HL and SL

Content overlap is substantial and the assessment shifts. Data-based questions carry real weight and extended responses need the mark scheme's accepted terminology, which a course assessed largely through quizzes and projects does not build.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Energetics, equilibrium and organic mechanisms go beyond most American high-school chemistry, and Higher Level considerably further. Students usually know the concepts and have not been asked to include state symbols or justify apparatus choices for marks.

Physics

HL and SL

The content step is manageable; the written and mathematical step is the binding one. Diploma physics awards marks for units, significant figures and the explicit statement of the principle in use, none of which a project-and-quiz assessment model trains.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

An American English class usually develops personal-response and research essay writing. What is new is unseen guided analysis under timing, a comparative essay structure, and the Individual Oral, which suits this cohort's presentation experience unusually well.

Language B

HL and SL

The Diploma requires a language acquisition subject, and an American programme's language provision varies widely. A student with two years of a language at a conversational level may be placed differently from what they expect, so ask how the school decides.

Economics, Psychology and Business Management

HL and SL

Often continuations of subjects already studied, which helps on content. The immediate demand is evaluation at the end of extended responses, and the second is writing to a clock rather than to a word count across a week.

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay

Diploma core

The components where this cohort most often does well. An American programme's research-paper and presentation experience maps closely onto the Extended Essay and the Theory of Knowledge exhibition, and together they carry up to three of the forty-five points.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways to run this move, weighted towards the papers because that is where this cohort loses marks. All are delivered online, one to one.

Timed-paper conversion block

Six sessions built entirely around sitting papers to the clock and reworking them. The student sits a whole paper in week one, marked to the published standard, and another in week six under identical conditions. In between the work is command terms, written method, units and pacing across a two-hour clock.

  • A whole paper under timing at each end of the block
  • Two raw marks reported side by side at the close
  • Command terms drilled on real question wording
  • Pacing practised, since the final third is where marks fall away

Criterion and command-term bridge

Four sessions converting the student's existing writing. They take an essay or lab report they were pleased with and rewrite it to a Diploma command term and against a criterion descriptor, keeping both versions. For a student with strong writing and no exam register, this is the fastest available improvement.

  • Existing work rewritten to Diploma command terms
  • Band descriptors judged by the student, with written reasons
  • Both versions kept together as the record
  • Nothing written for the student at any stage

Mid-course arrival audit

Two or three sessions for a student joining partway through, built on the coordinator's list of what the cohort has submitted and which deadlines have passed. The output is a written plan naming what can realistically be caught up and what cannot, which is more useful than optimism and far cheaper than discovering it in the spring.

  • The coordinator's submission and deadline list obtained first
  • Coverage gaps separated from assessment-model gaps
  • A written plan naming what will not be reached
  • Priority order set by which marks are still open

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

What a GPA measures and what a Diploma grade measures

A cumulative grade point average is a weighted record of performance over time. It includes assignments submitted, quizzes, unit tests, projects, class participation and often a semester examination, with each contributing a share. It is designed to reward consistency and to be relatively stable, which is why a strong student's GPA barely moves across a year. It also means a single poor performance is absorbed rather than decisive.

A Diploma subject grade is constructed differently. Most of it comes from terminal written papers sat in a single examination session, with one internally assessed component marked against published criteria contributing the rest at a published weighting. The grade is reported as a single number from one to seven, and the six subject grades plus up to three core points produce a total out of forty-five.

The consequences are specific rather than philosophical. A student whose strength was reliability now needs performance under a clock. A student who could recover from a bad week by submitting strong work in the next one now carries that paper into the grade. And the student's own sense of how well they are doing becomes unreliable for a term, because the signals they used to read, a stream of returned assignments, largely disappear.

The table sets the two systems against each other on the dimensions that change study behaviour. Read it with the student rather than about them, because the first column matters as much as the third: a student who understands that they are being measured differently handles a lower first-term number far better than one who concludes they have become worse.

02

AP and Higher Level are not the same thing

Families comparing the two routes frequently treat an AP course as equivalent to a Diploma Higher Level subject, and the comparison does not hold in either direction. An AP course is a single subject taught over roughly a year and assessed by one examination reported on a five-point scale, taken alongside the rest of a high-school programme. A Higher Level Diploma subject is taught across two years at 240 published teaching hours, carries an internally assessed component, and is one of six subjects inside a single qualification.

That means a student with several AP courses has done something real and has not done the thing the Diploma asks. The depth in a given AP subject may be comparable to Higher Level; what is absent is the two-year arc, the internal assessment, and the obligation to carry six subjects plus a core simultaneously. Conversely, a Diploma candidate has carried that load and has not sat a standalone subject examination at the end of a single year.

Credit is the other question, and it is one for the receiving institution rather than for a tutoring page. Universities make their own decisions about credit and advanced standing for AP scores and for Higher Level grades, and those decisions differ by institution, by faculty and by intake. No institution's policy is reproduced here. Ask the admissions office in writing and keep the reply, including for the fallback choices.

The table compares the two on the points that affect a transition plan. The useful reading for a student with AP courses behind them is the final column: the content often helps considerably while the assessment style does not transfer at all, which is exactly the asymmetry this page is built around.

03

The transcript, the credits and what actually carries

A student moving out of an American programme part way through high school has a transcript with credits attached, and what happens to those credits is a question for the receiving school rather than something that resolves itself. An IB Diploma is a single two-year qualification rather than an accumulation of credits, so credits already earned generally do not reduce the Diploma requirement, although they may matter for a high-school diploma awarded alongside it by some schools.

The practical questions to ask at admission are short and specific. Does the school award its own high-school diploma alongside the IB Diploma, and if so, which existing credits count towards it. Which Diploma subjects will the student be placed into, and on what evidence. How does the school decide Language B placement for a student whose language study has been conversational rather than formal. And what does the school expect the student to do about any graduation requirement the American programme carried, such as a health or civics credit.

Those answers differ between schools and they are rarely volunteered. A family that asks them in writing at admission avoids discovering in the second year that a graduation requirement is outstanding, which is a solvable problem in September and a stressful one in the final term. It is worth putting the replies in the same folder as the internal deadline list.

One further point belongs here. For a student arriving after completing Grade 11 on an American programme, entering the second Diploma year is almost never viable, because the Diploma is designed as a continuous two-year course with internally assessed work spread across both. Schools will usually say so. Where a family is pressing for it, the honest advice is to look at alternatives rather than to compress two years into one.

04

Where this cohort actually loses marks

  • Pacing: three full timed papers, not topic sets
  • Command terms: two sessions, improving every subject at once
  • Written method and science terminology: presentation, not learning
  • Internal Assessment and the core: usually a strength to lean on

The pattern on a first marked Diploma paper is consistent enough to anticipate. The largest loss is pacing. A student trained on work spread across days meets a two-hour paper and runs out of time in the final third, abandoning or rushing questions that often carry the heaviest conceptual weight. This is not a knowledge problem and it moves with three full timed papers, because the student learns what six minutes of writing feels like.

The second loss is command terms. Diploma papers use their instruction vocabulary precisely, and a student answering by instinct produces a thoughtful, well-written response at the wrong depth. A full discussion where one exact point was wanted wastes time; a description where a judgement was required loses the marks that the judgement carries. The published command term list fixes this in two sessions and improves every subject at once.

The third is written method in the quantitative subjects. A graphing calculator and a worked-example culture produce students who reach correct answers efficiently and write very little, and the mark scheme pays for the route. In chemistry the same habit costs state symbols, conditions and reagents. Both are presentation changes rather than learning, which is why they recover quickly.

The fourth is terminology in the sciences, where the scheme lists what it will credit and a correct idea in loose language earns nothing. Practising with the published scheme open is the only efficient remedy. Against those four losses sit two genuine gains: this cohort usually handles the Internal Assessment, the Extended Essay and the Theory of Knowledge exhibition better than their classmates, because project and presentation work is familiar ground.

Ministry of Education equivalency on the American track

Equivalency is the process by which the UAE Ministry of Education recognises a foreign secondary certificate, and American-track families often meet it late. What is published for that track is different in kind from the British-track requirement, because it rests on standardised test scores rather than on a subject count.

On the published American-track requirement, English proficiency is evidenced by a score of 5 in the IELTS academic test, 61 in the TOEFL iBT, or 450 in the reading and writing section of the SAT. Mathematics requires at least 450 in the SAT Math test before applying. Those are the figures as published, and they matter for a transitioning student because they are tied to the track the student is leaving.

The complication for a family mid-transition is which track applies by the time the student finishes. A student who completes the IB Diploma is no longer presenting an American high-school certificate, and the equivalency route changes with the qualification. No IB points threshold for equivalency appears on this page, because none could be verified from an official Ministry source for it, and a figure invented on a tutoring site is exactly the kind of number a family acts on and then regrets.

Two cautions belong with this. Equivalency is performed by the Ministry through its own process, so no tutoring service should present it as an outcome it can secure or guarantee, and tutoring is not a requirement for it. And where a student may end up presenting either certificate depending on how the transition goes, it is worth asking the Ministry about both routes early rather than assuming one.

06

The weekly record for this cohort

A student arriving from a system with continuous feedback suddenly has very little of it, and that absence is disorienting for the student and for the parent. The remedy is to manufacture the feedback deliberately, which is also exactly what the paper-technique work requires. Every week should produce something that can be read without knowing the subject.

Four artefacts matter here. A whole paper or component sat under timing, with a raw mark, the level and the date recorded, and the conditions noted. A command-term rewrite, showing the student's earlier work and their Diploma version with a note on what changed. A marked quantitative question with the method written out. And, less frequently, a comment set on an Internal Assessment draft naming the criterion letter and band.

Movement is then measurable. Two comparable papers, same subject, same level, same conditions, a month apart, with the raw marks side by side. If the second is higher, the adjustment is happening. If not, the method changes rather than the hours increasing. For this cohort the first measurable change is usually pacing: the number of questions reached improves before the accuracy does, and that is worth noticing and saying out loud.

The table lists what to ask for by session type. Ask for the artefact rather than for a progress update, because in a transition term updates are optimistic out of kindness and marked work is not. Keep them in one folder in date order, since the folder is also the evidence a school will weigh if a level or a subject placement needs revisiting.

THE ARTEFACT TO ASK FOR, AND WHAT IT TELLS YOU

When staying on the American programme is the better choice

A page selling Diploma support should name the cases where the move is wrong, and there are three. The first is a student heading firmly for United States universities with a strong GPA, a good AP record and a settled plan. The American route is well understood by those institutions, the student's profile is already strong within it, and swapping systems at sixteen introduces risk for a benefit that may not exist.

The second is a student whose strength is genuinely reliability rather than performance. Someone who works steadily, submits everything, and historically underperforms relative to their classwork whenever a timed test arrives, is moving into a system that weights the timed test heavily. That is a structural mismatch rather than a motivation problem, and two years is a long time to spend on the wrong side of it.

The third is timing. A student who has completed Grade 11 on an American programme and wants to enter the second Diploma year is proposing to compress a continuous two-year course into one, with internally assessed work in six subjects already behind the cohort. Most schools will decline, and where one does not, the honest advice is still to look at alternatives.

Against those sit the clear cases for moving. A student with broad strengths and no settled route. A student planning on universities outside the United States, where the Diploma is widely read. A student who writes well and enjoys arguing about ideas, which Theory of Knowledge rewards directly. And a student whose project and research work is their strongest output, since the Diploma gives that output a graded place rather than treating it as enrichment.

08

Buying this honestly

Published Dubai rates give the arithmetic. A qualified online subject tutor sits at AED 150 to 300 an hour, with Unitors publishing IB from AED 200. Specialist IB work is quoted at AED 200 to 450 and above in Bestimate's 2026 Dubai rate table, TutorChase at AED 270, and BartyED's premium named tier at AED 650. A six-session timed-paper conversion block is therefore roughly AED 900 to 2,700, and a four-session command-term bridge AED 600 to 1,800. Those are the providers' figures; ours is quoted after the free trial lesson with session length and marking inclusion stated.

Refuse a plan weighted towards the internally assessed components for this cohort. Project and research work is usually where an American-programme student is already strong, and a block built around it is selling them support for their best area. The money belongs in pacing, command terms, written method and science terminology, which is where the marked scripts show the losses.

Refuse any offer to produce Internal Assessment, Extended Essay or Theory of Knowledge material. Those must be the student's own work, the IB treats submitted work that is not as malpractice, and the consequence falls on the student rather than on whoever was paid. This is particularly worth saying to a cohort that is good at project work and may be offered help that crosses the line.

Insist on three things in writing: the whole timed paper with a raw mark and a date at each end of the block, the school's internal deadline list, and a statement of what the block will not reach. No university credit policy, no Ministry threshold for the IB, no success rate and no average point score appears anywhere on this page, because none could be verified or produced with a sample size, a date and a method.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Dubai

What location changes here is which schools are realistically in play, since American and IB programmes sit on different campuses across the city. These notes cover the practical pattern.

Al Barsha and Barsha Heights

Both American and IB provision within a short radius, so students frequently move school rather than emirate. Short commutes make a weekday 16:30 session realistic, which suits a first-term paper-technique block.

Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim

Established American-programme schools with IB options nearby, so a move means a new school as well as a new assessment model. Collect the internal deadline list from the receiving school before the first week ends.

Emirates Hills and Dubai Hills

Large Diploma cohorts and heavy co-curricular calendars. A student arriving with strong project experience will handle CAS and the Extended Essay well, and needs the timed-paper work scheduled deliberately instead.

Mirdif and Dubai Festival City

Long eastern commutes, so first-term evening sessions finish late and tired. Timed papers belong on a weekend morning here, with a shorter midweek session for command-term work.

Al Jaddaf, Downtown and Business Bay

Central towers near continuum IB schools, with a high share of recent arrivals from American international schools elsewhere. Establishing exactly which courses and credits the student completed is the first task rather than an assumption.

Dubai Silicon Oasis and Academic City

University-belt households, often with AP coursework behind the student. Demand here concentrates on Higher Level mathematics and science papers, where the AP content helps and the paper conventions do not transfer.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Ask the transcript questions at admission

Does the school award its own high-school diploma alongside the IB Diploma, and which existing credits count towards it. Is any graduation requirement from the American programme still outstanding. How will Language B placement be decided. Get all three answers in writing and keep them with the deadline list.

  2. 02

Sit one whole paper under real timing

Not a topic set and not an untimed attempt. A full paper, in one sitting, with no notes, in the subject the student is strongest in, so the result separates pacing and conventions from content cleanly. For this cohort the first finding is almost always pacing.

  3. 03

Run the command-term rewrite on their own work

Take an essay or lab report the student was pleased with, put the Diploma command term list beside it, and have them rewrite it. Keep both versions. Three of those and the student reads the command term before the stem, which recovers marks across every subject simultaneously.

  4. 04

Lean on the internal components rather than funding them

Project, research and presentation experience usually transfers well to the Internal Assessment, the Extended Essay and the Theory of Knowledge exhibition. Check the first draft against criteria, then leave it alone and spend the hours on the papers instead.

  5. 05

Close on a second timed paper

Same subject, same level, same conditions as the first, with the two raw marks side by side and the number of questions reached recorded for both. Then decide separately whether weekly subject support is warranted, on the evidence rather than on momentum.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The plan is deliberately asymmetric

Money goes into pacing, command terms, written method and science terminology, because that is where the marked scripts show losses for this cohort. It does not go into project-style work, where an American-programme student usually arrives already strong.

No GPA conversion is offered

The two systems measure different evidence and no conversion table exists, so none appears here. What exists instead is a record: two comparable timed papers a month apart with their raw marks and the number of questions reached written down.

AP and Higher Level treated as different things

An AP course is a one-year single-subject examination; a Higher Level subject is a two-year course with an internal component inside a six-subject qualification. Content from a completed AP course helps; the assessment style does not transfer.

Feedback manufactured deliberately

A student leaving continuous assessment loses the stream of returned work they used to gauge themselves by. Weekly marked artefacts replace that signal, which is as much a wellbeing measure in the first term as an academic one.

No credit policies or thresholds reproduced

University credit decisions differ by institution, faculty and intake, and no IB points figure for Ministry equivalency could be verified from an official source, so none is published. Both are read from the institution or the Ministry and kept on file.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

How does a GPA compare with Diploma grades out of seven?+

It does not convert, and any table claiming otherwise is invented. A GPA is a weighted record over time from assignments, quizzes, tests and participation, designed to be stable and to reward consistency. A Diploma subject grade comes mostly from terminal written papers plus one criterion-marked component, reported as a single number. A grade 5 is a solid, widely accepted result and a 7 goes to a small proportion of candidates globally. Judge progress from two comparable timed papers a month apart instead.

Is an AP course the same as a Diploma Higher Level subject?+

No, and the differences matter for planning. An AP course is a single subject taught over roughly a year and assessed by one examination on a five-point scale, taken alongside a high-school programme. A Higher Level subject runs two years at 240 published teaching hours, carries an internally assessed component, and is one of six subjects inside a single qualification. Content from a completed AP course often helps considerably. What is absent is the two-year arc, the internal assessment and the obligation to carry six subjects plus a core.

Will credits my child has already earned transfer into the Diploma?+

Generally not in the way families expect, because the IB Diploma is a single two-year qualification rather than an accumulation of credits. Credits may still matter if the school awards its own high-school diploma alongside the IB Diploma, which some do. Ask the receiving school in writing which existing credits count towards that, whether any graduation requirement from the American programme is outstanding, and how it will place the student into subjects. Keep the replies with the internal deadline list.

My child has a 3.9 GPA. Why is the first Diploma report lower?+

Because the measurement changed, not the student. A GPA rewards consistency across many small pieces of work; a Diploma grade is dominated by performance in a two-hour paper. A student whose strength was reliability has been well served for years and now meets a system where the clock is most of the grade. The first term also removes the continuous feedback they used to gauge themselves by. That is why weekly marked papers matter here: they replace a signal the student has lost.

What does the Ministry of Education require on the American track?+

On the published requirement, English proficiency is evidenced by a score of 5 in the IELTS academic test, 61 in the TOEFL iBT, or 450 in the reading and writing section of the SAT, and mathematics requires at least 450 in the SAT Math test before applying. That requirement attaches to the American certificate. A student who completes the IB Diploma is presenting a different qualification, and no IB points threshold is published here because none could be verified from an official Ministry source. Ask the Ministry about both routes early.

Which American subjects map onto which Diploma subjects?+

Pre-calculus or calculus supports Analysis and Approaches on content, with the non-calculator paper and written method both new. An American statistics course sits close to Applications and Interpretation, where the demand is written commentary rather than computation. High-school biology and chemistry overlap substantially and then extend at Higher Level. English classes develop personal-response and research writing, with unseen guided analysis under timing being the new form. Language B placement depends on how formal the prior language study was, so ask the school.

Does the Diploma suit a student used to continuous assessment?+

Partly, and the mismatch is worth facing. The Diploma's internally assessed components suit this cohort well, because project, research and presentation work is familiar ground and often a genuine advantage over classmates. The terminal papers do not, because they reward performance in a two-hour window rather than steady accumulation. A student whose historical pattern is strong classwork and weaker timed tests is moving into a system weighted against that pattern, which is a structural fact rather than a motivation issue.

Does my child still need the SAT after moving to the Diploma?+

That depends on where they intend to apply and on which certificate they will present, so it is a question for the institutions and for the Ministry rather than for a tutoring page. Note that the Ministry's published American-track requirement names SAT scores, so a student who may end up presenting the American certificate has a reason to keep those tests in view. A student who completes the Diploma is presenting a different qualification. Ask both the universities and the Ministry in writing and keep the replies.

How many AP courses are equivalent to a Diploma?+

There is no equivalence of that kind, and pursuing one leads to bad decisions. The Diploma is a single qualification with six subjects, three core components and a two-year structure; AP courses are individual subject examinations taken alongside a high-school diploma. A student with several APs has demonstrated subject depth and has not demonstrated the Diploma's particular demand, which is carrying breadth and self-directed internal assessment simultaneously. Universities assess each on its own terms, so ask them rather than seeking a conversion.

Do tutors visit homes in Dubai for these sessions?+

No. IB Gram does not run home visits anywhere in the UAE, since that is an India-only service, and all sessions are delivered online over live video. For this transition the online format is directly useful: whole papers are sat at home under timing and then annotated live on a shared screen, raw marks and question-reach counts accumulate in one file, and families who may move internationally again keep both the tutor and the accumulated record rather than starting over.

Is it better to move in Grade 10 or Grade 11?+

Grade 10 into the first Diploma year is the cleanest entry: nothing is in progress, content is largely continuous in mathematics and the sciences, and the full two-year structure is ahead. Moving partway through the first Diploma year means arriving with Internal Assessments underway, an Extended Essay question expected and Theory of Knowledge several months in. Moving after completing Grade 11, into the second Diploma year, is almost never viable, since the Diploma is designed as a continuous two-year course and most schools will say so.

What evidence will show us the adjustment is happening?+

Four artefacts, weekly. A whole paper or component sat under real timing with the raw mark, the level, the date and the conditions recorded. A command-term rewrite showing the student's own earlier work beside their Diploma version. A marked quantitative question with the method written out. And occasional comments on an Internal Assessment draft naming the criterion letter and band. For this cohort the first measurable improvement is usually the number of questions reached rather than accuracy, which is worth noticing explicitly.

Does the Diploma help or hurt a United States university application?+

Both qualifications are read by US institutions, and the honest answer is that it depends on the student's profile and on the specific universities. A student with a strong GPA and a good AP record already has a well-understood profile in that system, and swapping at sixteen introduces risk. A student with broad strengths and international plans may be better served by the Diploma. Credit and advanced-standing policies differ by institution, faculty and intake, so ask the admissions offices in writing and keep the replies.

When is staying on the American programme the better choice?+

Three cases. A student heading firmly for United States universities with a strong GPA, a good AP record and a settled plan, where the existing profile is already strong. A student whose strength is reliability rather than timed performance, which is a structural mismatch with a paper-weighted system. And a student who has already completed Grade 11, for whom entering the second Diploma year would mean compressing a continuous two-year course into one. Saying so costs a sale and is the correct advice in those cases.

What does a transition block cost for this move?+

A six-session timed-paper conversion block runs roughly AED 900 to 2,700, and a four-session command-term and criterion bridge AED 600 to 1,800, using the published Dubai bands of AED 150 to 300 an hour for a qualified online tutor and AED 200 to 450 and above for a specialist. Those are market figures from Unitors, TutorChase and Bestimate rather than ours. Ask whether setting and marking work between sessions is included, because for a paper-technique block the marked script is the entire product.

Spend on the papers, lean on the projects

This move has a clear shape once the evidence is in front of you. Ask the transcript and placement questions at admission and get the answers in writing. Then have your child sit one whole paper under real timing in their strongest subject, and record the raw mark, the level, the date and how many questions they reached. For a student arriving from an American programme the finding is almost always pacing, command terms and written method rather than content, and all three move within a handful of marked papers. Book the free trial lesson, bring the script, and ask for the two raw marks at either end of the block.
