IB DP Philosophy Tutor in Dubai

An IB DP Philosophy tutor in Dubai is rarely a local hire: very few schools in the emirate timetable Diploma Philosophy, and the families who search for one are usually weighing a subject choice, a self-taught route, or an essay mark that will not move. This page prices that decision in AED, names what changes the number in Dubai specifically, and sets out what a one-to-one hour can realistically fix. Lessons run live online, one-to-one, in Gulf Standard Time, and the first one is free.

  • Live one-to-one video lessons in Gulf Standard Time, evenings and weekends
  • Market AED rate bands published on this page, with the source and the date
  • Essays returned marked against the published assessment objectives between sessions

IB & IGCSE in Dubai

Pricing a Philosophy tutor in a city that barely timetables the subject

Dubai is the densest private-school market in the UAE. The emirate's media office put the 2024-25 sector at 387,441 students across 227 private schools offering 17 different curricula, with the International Baccalaureate accounting for 7% of that enrolment. Philosophy is a Group 3 option inside those IB programmes, and only a minority of Dubai's Diploma schools put it on a timetable. That single fact reshapes the search. A parent typing 'IB DP philosophy tutor in Dubai' is not comparing twenty nearby candidates on price; they are usually trying to find out whether anyone in reach teaches the subject at all, and what the answer costs.

Scarcity is what moves the number here, not difficulty. The published rate pages in this market spread very wide. EdFlik advertises from AED 45 to 65 an hour and Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52 for budget online sessions. Unitors publishes IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. TutorChase quotes AED 270. Bestimate's Dubai rate table puts specialist IB, IGCSE and A-Level support at AED 200 to 450 and above, with in-home one-to-one visits at AED 180 to 350. BartyED publishes AED 650 for a premium named tutor. Those are other providers' own figures, read in October 2026, and they are market context rather than an IB Gram price list.

Philosophy quotes sit toward the upper half of that spread for a reason a parent can check. The subject is assessed almost entirely through argued prose written under time pressure, which means the thing being bought is not an explanation of content but a marking relationship. A tutor who teaches Philosophy properly reads a timed essay, marks it against the published assessment objectives, writes an examiner-style comment on where the argument stopped doing work, and then teaches into that specific gap next session. That cycle takes unpaid reading time between lessons. Providers who price only the contact hour either absorb it or quietly stop doing it, and the second outcome is the one that shows in a predicted grade.

Four decisions change a Dubai family's two-year Philosophy bill far more than haggling over an hourly rate ever will. The first is the Group 3 choice itself, made in DP1 before anyone has written a philosophy essay. The second is Standard against Higher Level, because Higher Level adds an unseen paper on the practice of philosophy that almost nobody revises for and that therefore needs its own block of hours. The third is when the internal assessment stimulus gets chosen: a weak stimulus cannot be rescued late, and a late rescue is the single most expensive thing on this page. The fourth is whether the Extended Essay is also in Philosophy, which doubles the supervision load in the same term.

Delivery is online. Lessons run one-to-one over live video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time around a Dubai school week. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai; home visits are a service we run only in India. For a subject with this few specialists, that is the point rather than a compromise: a Jumeirah or Mirdif family gets a Philosophy teacher who has marked the prescribed text their school set, instead of whichever generalist humanities tutor happens to be a twenty-minute drive away. A tutor here teaches, questions and gives feedback on the student's own work, and never authors any part of an assessed submission.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Philosophy sits in Group 3 of the Diploma Programme, but the writing habits it rewards are built earlier and carried into the Diploma core. These are the three programme levels a Dubai family is usually dealing with when they contact us about Philosophy.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme, Individuals and Societies

The Middle Years Programme does not teach Philosophy as a named subject, but it is where the argued essay is either learned or missed. Individuals and Societies criteria reward the use of evidence, the weighing of perspectives and a conclusion that follows from what came before. A student who has only ever been marked on describing a source arrives in DP1 able to summarise a philosopher and unable to argue against one, which is exactly the habit that caps a Diploma Philosophy mark at a 4 or a 5.

Most Dubai IB schools run the Middle Years Programme to Year 11, and a sizeable group of British-curriculum schools run IGCSE instead before splitting into A Level or the Diploma. Either route can lead into Philosophy, but the IGCSE cohort usually arrives with stronger exam timing and weaker practice at holding two positions in tension. We work on the missing half rather than the half the school already built.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme Philosophy

Diploma Philosophy is built around a compulsory core theme on what it is to be human, a set of optional themes the school chooses, a prescribed philosophical text, and an internal assessment built from a non-philosophical stimulus. Higher Level adds an unseen paper on the practice of philosophy itself. Confirm the current component structure, durations and weightings with your school's IB coordinator before planning hours against them, because the subject guide is revised on its own cycle.

In Dubai the practical question is whether the school runs the subject with a specialist or with a willing humanities teacher covering it alongside History. Both exist in this emirate. Where a specialist is in post, outside help is usually a marking supplement. Where the subject is being covered rather than taught, the tutoring load is closer to a full teaching role, and the hours and therefore the cost roughly double.

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay

Theory of Knowledge and Philosophy overlap in vocabulary and diverge completely in what earns credit. Theory of Knowledge asks how knowledge claims are made and tested across areas of knowledge; Philosophy asks a student to construct and defend a position against the strongest objection available. Students who treat one as the other lose marks in both, and it is the most common cross-subject confusion we see in Dubai Diploma cohorts.

An Extended Essay in Philosophy is a real option for a Dubai student and a demanding one, because the supervisor cannot supply the argument and the library resources available locally skew toward secondary commentary. Supervision through us is structured as questioning and feedback on the student's own drafts, with the school's registered supervisor remaining the person who signs the work off.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Philosophy is rarely the only subject a Dubai family is thinking about. These are the related Diploma courses our tutors cover for the same students, with the specific demand each one makes.

Philosophy

HL and SL

Assessed through argued essays on the core theme, the optional themes and a prescribed text, plus an internal assessment built from a stimulus. Marks are lost on exposition that never becomes argument, and on objections raised and then not answered. Higher Level adds an unseen paper about the practice of philosophy.

Psychology

HL and SL

The Group 3 subject Dubai students most often choose instead of Philosophy. It rewards study citation, research method critique and ethical evaluation. It is a heavier memory load and a lighter argument load, and the tutor pool in this emirate is noticeably deeper, which shows in the quotes families receive.

Global Politics

HL and SL

Shares Philosophy's demand for conceptual precision and adds a case-study burden. Students are marked on the use of political concepts such as sovereignty, legitimacy and power rather than on narrative. The Higher Level extension asks for an oral presentation of a case study, which rewards different practice from essay work.

History

HL and SL

The closest neighbour to Philosophy in writing style and the furthest in method. History marks the handling of evidence and historiography; Philosophy marks the handling of argument. Students who move between the two often import the wrong habit, writing philosophy essays that catalogue thinkers' views as if they were sources.

Economics

HL and SL

Frequently paired with Philosophy by Dubai students aiming at politics, philosophy and economics degrees. Diagram accuracy and definitional precision carry the marks, with a portfolio of internal assessment commentaries built from real news articles. The skills transfer less than families expect, so hours rarely substitute between the two.

Digital Society

HL and SL

A newer Group 3 course that some Dubai schools added in place of Information Technology in a Global Society. It asks for inquiry into real digital contexts and rewards claim-and-evidence writing closer to Philosophy than to Psychology, which makes it a sensible fallback for a student who wanted Philosophy and could not get it timetabled.

Business Management

HL and SL

The most heavily subscribed Group 3 option across Dubai Diploma cohorts, which is why it is the easiest to find help for. Tools, stakeholder analysis and a research project carry the assessment. Students considering it against Philosophy should compare the writing styles, because one rewards structure and the other rewards scrutiny.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Where a Philosophy student's close-reading skill either exists or does not. The guided textual analysis rewards attention to how a text makes its claim, which is the same move Paper 2 of Philosophy asks for on a prescribed philosophical text. We often run the two together for the same student.

Theory of Knowledge

Diploma core

A compulsory essay on a prescribed title plus an exhibition of three objects. Marked on the quality of discussion of knowledge questions, not on philosophical sophistication. Philosophy students tend to over-argue it and lose marks for not addressing the prescribed title as written.

Extended Essay

Diploma core

A four-thousand-word independent research essay in a chosen subject. In Philosophy it needs a question narrow enough to be argued rather than surveyed. Supervision is coaching and questioning on the student's own drafts; the argument and the prose remain entirely the student's.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Philosophy support is bought in blocks, not open-ended retainers, because the subject has a small number of discrete things that go wrong. These are the four blocks Dubai families actually book, and what each one is for.

Weekly essay cycle

The standard arrangement through DP1 and the first half of DP2. The student writes one timed essay a week on the core theme or an optional theme, the tutor marks it against the published assessment objectives before the next session, and the lesson is spent teaching into the specific failure the script shows. Progress is visible because the marked scripts accumulate in one place and can be read in sequence.

  • One timed essay written to exam conditions each week
  • Marked script and an examiner-style comment returned before the next lesson
  • Session agenda set by the script, not by a fixed syllabus order
  • Running list of recurring faults the student can check against before submitting

Higher Level unseen-paper block

A short intensive block aimed only at the Higher Level paper on the practice of philosophy. It is the component most Dubai students have done least practice on, because schools understandably spend their time on the themes and the prescribed text. Six to ten sessions on unseen extracts, with each one written under time and marked, usually moves this component more than any other single intervention.

  • Unseen extracts worked under exam timing from the first session
  • A method for finding the philosophical move in an unfamiliar passage
  • Practice at writing about doing philosophy rather than about a philosopher
  • Confirm the current Higher Level component weighting with your coordinator

Internal assessment supervision block

Booked when the stimulus is being chosen, which is the point at which the grade is largely decided. A stimulus that yields only one obvious philosophical question produces an essay with nowhere to go. Sessions interrogate the candidate's shortlist, test which stimulus supports a genuine problem, and then give feedback on the student's own drafts without touching the prose.

  • Stimulus shortlist tested against whether it generates a real philosophical problem
  • Question framing worked until it is arguable rather than descriptive
  • Written feedback on the student's drafts, with the writing left to the student
  • Word allocation planned across the stimulus analysis and the argument

Pre-session revision sprint

A four to six week block in the term before the May session, built entirely around timed writing. The aim is throughput: more essays written under clock pressure than the school can realistically set and mark. Sessions are short, marking turnaround is fast, and the content work is restricted to the themes the student's own scripts keep failing on.

  • Two timed essays a week, marked within forty-eight hours
  • Theme coverage driven by the student's weakest scripts
  • Exam-day timing rehearsed, including planning time per essay
  • Scheduling adjusted for Ramadan and school mock timetables

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

What a Dubai family is actually buying when they price Philosophy help

  • Teaching the themes: explainable by a strong graduate, cheapest of the four
  • Marking timed essays: the component that actually moves a grade
  • Prescribed-text work: useless unless the tutor knows your school's set text
  • Internal assessment supervision: bounded by honesty rules, not by hours

A Philosophy hour is not one product. It is four, and providers price them as if they were interchangeable, which is why two quotes for the same subject in the same emirate can differ by a factor of ten. Separating them is the single most useful thing a parent can do before paying anyone, because three of the four cost real time outside the lesson and the fourth does not.

The first purchase is teaching: someone explains the core theme, the optional themes the school has chosen, and the argumentative moves the subject expects. A capable graduate can do this. The second is marking: a timed essay is read, scored against the published assessment objectives, and returned with a comment that identifies where the argument stopped doing work. This requires someone who has marked the subject and it takes forty minutes per script that nobody sees. The third is prescribed-text work, which depends entirely on which text the school has set and cannot be delivered generically. The fourth is internal assessment supervision, which is mostly questioning and is bounded by IB academic-honesty rules.

Ask any prospective tutor which of the four their quoted rate covers. A rate that includes marking turnaround will be higher per hour and lower per mark gained. A rate that covers contact time only is cheaper and leaves the most valuable work undone, because in a subject assessed through argued prose the marked script is the teaching material. The table below sets out the four purchases, what each looks like when it is being done properly, and the question that tests whether it is included.

Group 3 in Dubai: the choice that sets the two-year bill

The biggest number in a Dubai Philosophy budget is fixed in DP1, before a single essay is written, by the Group 3 choice. Tutor supply in this emirate is uneven across the group, and supply sets price far more firmly than content difficulty does. Business Management and Economics are taught in almost every Diploma school here and supported by a deep local tutoring market. Philosophy is taught in a minority of them and supported by very few people, so quotes for it cluster at the specialist end of the published bands rather than the mid band.

That is worth saying plainly because the usual explanation offered to parents, that Philosophy is harder, is not the real mechanism. A Psychology student carries a heavier recall load than a Philosophy student does. What Philosophy carries is a narrower pool of people who can mark it, and the published rate pages show what a narrow pool does to a price. Bestimate's Dubai table puts specialist IB support at AED 200 to 450 and above, against AED 150 to 300 for a qualified subject tutor working online; Philosophy sits in the first band and Business Management frequently in the second.

The switching cost matters too. A student who abandons Philosophy in the middle of DP1 has to rebuild a different Group 3 course from scratch while carrying five other subjects, and that rebuild is the most expensive tutoring any family on this page will buy. The practical conclusion is unglamorous: decide Group 3 with the real rates and the real provision in front of you, confirm with the coordinator that the course will actually run to DP2, and treat a mid-programme switch as a last resort rather than a correction.

Timed writing is the product, and it is the thing nobody practises enough

  • Volume of marked timed essays is the strongest single predictor we can observe
  • Planning time rehearsed to the minute, not left to exam-day improvisation
  • A default essay shape the student can deploy without deliberating
  • The strongest objection to their own position, named unprompted

Diploma Philosophy is examined by essay under clock pressure. A student who understands the material and has written four essays in two years will be beaten by a student who understands it less well and has written forty. This is not a motivational point, it is an arithmetic one: the examinable skill is producing a structured argument against an unseen prompt inside a fixed number of minutes, and that skill only responds to repetition under the same constraint.

Dubai schools cannot generate that volume. A teacher with a Diploma class, a Middle Years timetable and internal assessment supervision cannot mark two essays per student per week, and should not be expected to. The gap between what the examination rewards and what a school can physically mark is the clearest honest case for outside help in this subject, and it is also the thing to buy first. Everything else, including content revision, is downstream of it.

Confirm the current paper structure, durations and weightings with your school's IB coordinator before you plan hours against them, because the subject guide is revised on its own cycle and no figure on a tutoring page should be treated as the source. What does not change is the practice requirement. A student aiming at the top bands needs planning time rehearsed to the minute, a default essay shape they can deploy without thinking, and the experience of having run out of time in a practice essay rather than in the real one.

The internal check we use is simple. By the February mock of DP2, a student should be able to plan an essay on an unfamiliar prompt in under eight minutes and name, unprompted, the strongest objection to their own position. A student who can do both is in a different band from a student who can do neither, and the difference was built by volume of marked writing rather than by additional reading.

04

Command terms and assessment objectives: where a Philosophy mark actually comes from

Most mid-band Philosophy scripts we read in Dubai are not wrong. They are off-task. The student has written a competent account of what two philosophers think and the prompt asked them to evaluate a claim, so the marks available for argument were never in play. Command terms are the mechanism by which an examiner decides which marks a script is even eligible for, and they are taught far less often than content is.

The fix is mechanical and quick, which makes it the best value work on this page. A student learns what each command term obliges them to produce, writes a paragraph that produces exactly that, and has it marked. Two or three sessions on command terms typically does more for a 4 or a 5 than a term of content revision, because the content was usually already there. What was missing was the obligation being met.

The table below lists the command terms that appear most often in Philosophy prompts, what the examiner is looking for behind each one, the shortfall we see most frequently in Dubai scripts, and what a session actually does about it. Use it as a checklist against your child's last returned essay: in most cases the mismatch between the verb in the question and the verb the script performed is visible in the first paragraph.

One caution. Command-term lists circulate widely online and not all of them match the current guide. Check the wording against the subject guide your school is teaching from, through the coordinator, rather than against a revision site.

When a Dubai school does not run Philosophy: the routes, priced honestly

A recurring message we get from Dubai parents reads roughly the same each time: our child wants Philosophy, the school does not offer it, what are our options? The honest answer is that the options are narrower than the internet suggests, and the narrowness is worth understanding before money is spent, because one of the routes families ask about most often is not available at all.

IB Diploma registration runs through an IB World School. Unlike Cambridge, which allows private candidates to enter through an approved examination centre, the Diploma is not something a student can sit independently alongside a school that does not teach it. Confirm the current position with your school's IB coordinator or the regional IB office before relying on any route, including this one. What that rules out in practice is the arrangement parents most often propose: keep the school place, buy the teaching privately, and enter the exam separately.

What remains is a short list. The student can take a Group 3 subject the school does run and read Philosophy seriously outside the Diploma, which costs little and earns nothing on the transcript. They can move to a Dubai school that timetables it, which is a school-fee decision rather than a tutoring one and sits inside a market where KHDA confirmed in May 2026 that private-school fees would not rise for the 2026-27 academic year. They can ask whether the school will run the subject as a supported self-study option with an internal teacher of record, which some Dubai schools will do for a determined student and which is where private tutoring genuinely substitutes for a class. Or they can choose Philosophy as the Extended Essay subject, which gets the thinking without the timetable.

The table sets these out with the hours each realistically needs and the main risk attached. The hour figures are planning estimates for a committed student, not promises, and the AED column applies the published market bands rather than an IB Gram price.

Writing philosophy in English when English is the second or third language

  • A closed set of argumentative connectives, practised to automaticity
  • Self-checking: what is this connective claiming about these two sentences?
  • Scheduling around KHDA-mandated Arabic and Islamic Education lessons
  • Feedback that names the gap and leaves the writing to the student

A large share of Dubai's Diploma cohort writes its examinations in English while speaking something else at home. In most subjects that shows up as slower reading. In Philosophy it shows up somewhere more awkward: the subject's marks depend on small logical connectives, and the words that carry them are exactly the ones that language learners use loosely. The difference between 'therefore', 'nevertheless', 'granted that' and 'in so far as' is the difference between an argument and a sequence of assertions, and an examiner reads the connective rather than the intention behind it.

This is coachable and it is not an English lesson. The work is a short, closed set of argumentative phrases, practised until they are automatic, paired with a habit of reading one's own paragraph and asking what each connective is claiming about the relationship between two sentences. Students who do this stop writing paragraphs that end weaker than they began. It takes a handful of sessions and it is often the fastest visible improvement in a returned script.

There is a scheduling dimension too. KHDA requires Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, with separate classes organised for Arab and non-Arab students and specified languages of instruction for each. For an Arabic-first student those lessons are additional contact hours in an already full Diploma week, and Philosophy tutoring has to be scheduled around them rather than on top of them. We plan the week with the school timetable in front of us for that reason.

One thing we do not do is rewrite prose. A tutor who smooths a student's sentences has taken ownership of the writing, which is both a disservice and an honesty problem. The feedback names the logical gap and leaves the repair to the student, every time.

07

What a Philosophy grade does for a university route, in the UAE and outside it

Parents ask whether Philosophy closes doors. The accurate answer distinguishes three different gates, and conflating them is what produces the bad advice circulating in Dubai parent groups. The first gate is the degree's own subject prerequisites. The second is the UAE Ministry of Education equivalency process, which is about the certificate rather than the subject. The third is admissions judgement, which is about the whole application.

On prerequisites, Philosophy is not a substitute for a science or for Mathematics. A student aiming at medicine, engineering or most quantitative degrees needs the relevant subjects at the relevant level, and Philosophy neither helps nor hurts that requirement. For law, politics, international relations, economics with a philosophy component, and anything requiring an admissions essay or interview, it is a genuinely strong subject, because the thing it trains is the thing those processes test.

On equivalency, the published rules are specific for the British and American tracks and were reported in July 2026. A British-track applicant must show five accredited subjects at GCSE or IGCSE at a grade no lower than E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that count of five, plus one accredited subject at Advanced Level at no less than E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. An American-track applicant must show English proficiency at IELTS academic 5, TOEFL iBT 61 or 450 in the SAT reading and writing section, and at least 450 in SAT Mathematics. One ranking competitor publishes a requirement of six IGCSE subjects; the sourced figure is five. No IB points threshold has been verified for this page, so none is published here. Check the current requirement on the Ministry's own channels before relying on it, and note that equivalency is a process families complete with the authority directly, not something a tutoring service performs on their behalf.

The table turns the three gates into the questions a Dubai parent actually asks, with where each answer can be checked.

Academic honesty in a subject where the work is the argument

  • A tutor may ask any question and may not supply any sentence
  • Stimulus and thesis belong to the student, including the bad early versions
  • Generative text is not the student's work, and reads as inert argument
  • No reproduction of subject guides, past papers or mark schemes

In a subject assessed through prose, the line between help and malpractice is finer than in a subject assessed through calculation, and it is crossed more often by accident. A tutor who suggests a thesis has supplied the student's position. A tutor who reorders paragraphs has supplied the structure. Neither is dramatic, and both are a problem, because the internal assessment and the Extended Essay are submitted as the student's own work and the IB treats authorship seriously.

Our working rule is that a tutor may ask any question and may not supply any sentence. That rule survives contact with reality better than longer policies do. It means the tutor can ask what the strongest objection to a claim is, whether a stimulus actually generates a philosophical problem, where a paragraph stops arguing, and what a word in the prompt is doing. It means the tutor does not propose the thesis, does not draft or redraft the prose, does not restructure the student's document, and does not supply a reading that the student then cites without having read it.

There is a second honesty question specific to the present moment, which is generative text. A paragraph produced by a language model and then lightly edited is not the student's work, and in Philosophy it is unusually easy for a reader to notice, because such paragraphs are fluent and argumentatively inert. They state positions, balance them, and commit to nothing, which is exactly the profile of a mid-band script. Where a student has used any such tool, the school's own policy on acknowledgement applies and the coordinator is the person to ask.

The same restraint applies to materials. We do not reproduce or supply IB subject guides, past papers, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables. Those are the board's copyright and the school's to distribute. We reference them, cite the official source, and link out, which is also what the examination boards ask of anyone writing about their qualifications.

Permits, regulators and how these lessons actually run

Private tutoring in the UAE is permitted and regulated. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, it is granted free of charge for two years, and the eligible categories include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. The application route is the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation service called Issuance of a New Work Permit for Private Tutor Licensing, which lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time through the ministry's app, website and e-services system. Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published, so no figure is quoted here.

Two further points are worth a Dubai parent's attention. A tutoring operation with premises and staff in Dubai is a different legal entity from an individual tutor and needs a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute. IB Gram does not hold such a permit and does not operate premises in the UAE, and no page of ours should be read as claiming regulator endorsement of any kind. In Abu Dhabi, ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff bar teachers from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, and the permit's code of conduct points the same way. The practical implication for any emirate is that a family should not arrange for a child to be tutored privately by their own class teacher.

Delivery is online. Lessons are one-to-one over live video, screen-shared, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time and recorded or summarised depending on the family's preference. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai; home visits are a service we run only in India. For Philosophy that limitation costs a Dubai family nothing and gains them access to specialists who could never be inside commuting distance of Mirdif or Arabian Ranches at four in the afternoon.

If no Philosophy specialist is free in the slot you want, we say so rather than substituting a general humanities tutor and hoping. Where we can offer an adjacent specialist who can teach the essay method while you wait for the subject slot, we explain exactly what that person can and cannot cover. A free trial lesson comes first in every case, with no card required to book it.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Dubai

Delivery is online, so the area a family lives in does not change who is available to teach. It does change the school their child attends, the traffic that decides when a session can start, and how much of the subject the school is actually covering.

Emirates Hills and The Meadows

Served by one of the emirate's longest-running Diploma cohorts, where Group 3 provision is usually broad enough to include Philosophy with a subject specialist. Families here most often want marking volume and Higher Level unseen-paper practice rather than teaching from scratch.

Al Barsha and Dubai Hills

A dense cluster of IB and British schools within a few kilometres. Several run the Diploma with Philosophy as an option subject in alternate years depending on uptake, so a Year 12 student may find the course withdrawn before DP2. That is the scenario that pushes a family into full outside provision.

Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim

Older villa communities feeding a mix of Diploma and A Level schools. Afternoon traffic along Al Wasl and Jumeirah Beach Road routinely pushes a 16:00 start to 17:00 for anything requiring travel, which is one reason online slots fill first in this stretch.

Dubai Marina and Jumeirah Lake Towers

Apartment living, long commutes and a high share of expatriate Diploma students arriving mid-programme from other systems. Mid-year transfers into Philosophy are common here, and they need the core theme rebuilt quickly rather than revised.

Mirdif, Al Warqa and Dubai Festival City

A large catchment of Indian-, British- and IB-curriculum schools where Group 3 choices tend toward Business Management and Economics. A Philosophy student in this area is often the only one in their year, which changes what tutoring has to replace.

Dubai Silicon Oasis and Academic City

Close to several universities and a set of schools running the Diploma alongside other curricula. Students here frequently ask how a Philosophy grade reads to a UAE admissions office, because the campus is on their doorstep and the question is concrete.

Arabian Ranches, Motor City and Sports City

Villa communities with long school runs and a heavy co-curricular load, so sessions here usually settle on weekend mornings or after 19:00 on weekdays. Essay marking between sessions matters more where contact hours are hard to schedule.

Downtown, Business Bay and Al Quoz

A mixed residential and studio district where Diploma students often combine Philosophy with Visual Arts or Film. The cross-subject work is useful: a student who can read an image closely usually reads a prescribed philosophical text better than one who cannot.

School ecosystem

Dubai IB World Schools running the full Diploma

These schools run the Diploma Programme and are inspected annually by KHDA on a six-band scale from Outstanding to Very Weak. Group 3 provision varies between them year to year, and Philosophy is the option most often affected by uptake. Ask the coordinator directly whether the course will run to DP2 before choosing it.

Dubai schools where Diploma students sit alongside other curricula

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us what the last marked essay said

The most useful thing a Dubai family can send is a recent Philosophy script with the teacher's marks on it, plus the school's option themes and prescribed text. That single document tells a specialist more than a conversation about aims does, because it shows whether the problem is content, command terms, timing or structure.

  2. 02

We confirm whether a specialist is genuinely free

Philosophy is a thin-supply subject in the UAE, so we check availability against the specific slot you need in Gulf Standard Time before promising anything. If nobody suitable is free, we tell you that and say when a slot is likely rather than offering a general humanities tutor as a silent substitute.

  3. 03

A free trial lesson, taught not sold

The trial is a real lesson on a real weakness, usually a timed paragraph written and marked inside the hour. No card is required to book it, and nothing is charged if you decide not to continue. You see how the tutor marks, which is the part of the relationship that matters most in this subject.

  4. 04

A written plan with the hours and the block named

After the trial you get a short plan: which block applies, how many sessions, what gets written and marked each week, and what will be visible by the next school report. The AED context on this page is market data from published sources; your own quote is set in the consultation rather than from a rate card.

  5. 05

Marked scripts accumulate where you can read them

Every timed essay comes back scored with a comment, and the scripts stay together in sequence. Parents who want evidence rather than reassurance read three consecutive essays and see whether the same fault keeps appearing. That is also how we decide when a block has done its work and should stop.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Rates on the page, with the source and the date

Three of six ranking pages in this market publish no price at all, and the two that do quote in US dollars. We publish the AED bands other providers advertise, attribute them, and date them to October 2026, so a Dubai parent can see where a quote sits before they take a call.

A specialist, or an honest no

Philosophy has few Diploma-level teachers in this region. Where one is free for your slot we say so; where none is, we say that too. The alternative, quietly assigning a generalist and letting a parent find out in week three, is how this market earns its reputation.

Marking is the product, not an extra

A Philosophy grade moves when timed essays are written and marked in volume. Our blocks are built around that cycle rather than around contact hours, and the marked scripts are the deliverable a parent can actually inspect.

Honesty rules stated, not implied

A tutor here may ask any question and may not supply any sentence. We do not touch the prose of an internal assessment or an Extended Essay, we do not reproduce board materials, and we say what we will refuse before a family pays for anything.

Scheduled around a real Dubai week

Sessions are planned against the school timetable, KHDA-mandated Arabic and Islamic Education lessons, co-curricular commitments and the traffic that turns a 16:00 start into a 17:00 one. In Ramadan slots move post-Iftar as standard rather than on request.

No regulator claims, no invented statistics

IB Gram holds no KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, Ministry or examination-board approval and claims none. Every figure on this page is attributed to the source it came from, and where a number could not be verified, including IB session dates, it is left out.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

Which Dubai schools actually timetable Diploma Philosophy?+

Fewer than parents expect. Philosophy is a Group 3 option, and in Dubai it tends to run in the larger, longer-established Diploma cohorts where a class of eight or ten students is viable, while smaller cohorts fill Group 3 with Business Management, Economics and Psychology. Provision also moves year to year with uptake, so a subject offered to Year 11 at options evening can be withdrawn before DP1 starts. Ask the IB coordinator two questions directly: is Philosophy running this year, and what is the minimum class size at which it would be withdrawn. Get the answer before you build a subject plan around it.

What should we budget for two years of Philosophy support in Dubai?+

It depends almost entirely on whether the school teaches the subject. Where a specialist is in post and outside help is a marking supplement, one session a week through DP1 and DP2 at the published Dubai specialist band of AED 200 to 450 an hour puts the recurring cost in the AED 800 to 1,800 a month range, with heavier blocks before mocks. Where the school is covering rather than teaching the subject, two to three hours a week is realistic and the figure roughly doubles. Those bands are other providers' published rates read in October 2026, not an IB Gram price list; your own quote comes from the consultation.

Is Philosophy a sensible Group 3 choice next to Psychology or Global Politics?+

It is sensible for a student who enjoys being argued with and risky for one who prefers material that can be learned. Philosophy rewards the construction and defence of a position; Psychology rewards accurate recall of studies and methodological critique; Global Politics rewards concepts applied to cases. The honest discriminator is not interest but writing. Ask your child to write four hundred words defending a claim they hold against the strongest objection they can find. If that is enjoyable, Philosophy will suit them. If it is miserable, Psychology is the better two-year investment and the local tutoring market is far deeper.

How many marked essays should come back each month?+

On a weekly block, four, one per session, each written under exam timing and returned scored with a comment before the next lesson. In a pre-session sprint, eight. Below about three a month the practice volume is too low to shift a grade, whatever the quality of the teaching, because the examinable skill is producing argument under time pressure and that only responds to repetition. If a provider cannot tell you how many scripts will come back marked per month, you are buying contact hours rather than progress, and in this subject those are not the same purchase.

Can my child sit IB Philosophy as a private candidate in Dubai?+

Diploma registration runs through an IB World School, which rules out the arrangement families most often propose: keep the current school place, buy the teaching privately, and enter the examination separately. This differs from Cambridge, where private candidates can enter through an approved examination centre. Confirm the current position with your school's IB coordinator or the regional IB office before planning around it, because the rules on registration and on anticipated and retake entries are the board's to state and not a tutoring site's. In practice, the workable routes are school-supported self-study with an internal teacher of record, or a school transfer.

Does Higher Level Philosophy change the hourly rate we should expect?+

Not usually the rate, but almost always the hours. Higher Level adds a paper on the practice of philosophy worked from unseen material, and it is the component Dubai students have typically written least for, because schools reasonably spend their time on the themes and the prescribed text. Budget a separate block of six to ten sessions for it rather than assuming weekly lessons will absorb the extra demand. Confirm the current Higher Level component structure and weighting with your coordinator, since the subject guide is revised on its own cycle and no figure from a tutoring page should be treated as authoritative.

My son writes well in English but keeps scoring a 4 in Philosophy. Why?+

Almost always because the essays are off-task rather than wrong. Fluent writers produce balanced accounts of what philosophers think, and the prompts ask for evaluation, discussion or justification, which oblige a judgement and a response to the strongest objection. The marks for argument are therefore never in play. Read his last script and check whether the final paragraph commits to anything. If it summarises, that is the problem, and it is a fast fix: two or three sessions on command terms and paragraph obligations typically moves a script more than a term of additional reading does.

How long before the May session is it still worth starting Philosophy help?+

Six weeks is enough to change timing, essay shape and command-term accuracy, which is a real improvement and the fastest available. It is not enough to repair a weak internal assessment, because that document will already be with the school. So the answer depends on which component is the problem. If the papers are the weakness, a short intensive sprint of two marked timed essays a week is worth starting late. If the internal assessment is the weakness and the school deadline has passed, say so at the consultation and we will plan around the papers instead of selling hours that cannot help.

What does the assessment objective wording actually oblige a student to do?+

It tells the examiner which marks a script is eligible for, which is why an off-task essay cannot reach the top bands however well written it is. In practice each prompt verb carries an obligation: evaluate requires a judgement with the counter-position addressed, analyse requires the load-bearing assumption identified, to what extent requires a calibrated answer rather than a yes or a no. We teach these as mechanical obligations first and nuance second, because the mechanical version is what recovers marks quickly. Check the current wording through your school's coordinator rather than from a revision website, as circulating lists are often out of date.

Can Philosophy be the Extended Essay subject, and what does supervision involve?+

Yes, and it suits students who want the subject without the timetable. The difficulty is the question: philosophy essays fail when the question is broad enough to survey rather than narrow enough to argue. Supervision through us is questioning and written feedback on the student's own drafts, never proposing the thesis or redrafting the prose, and your school's registered supervisor remains the person who signs the work off. Budget supervision across two terms rather than a burst near the deadline, since the expensive failure in this component is a question that cannot be argued and is only discovered late.

Does the subject my child picks affect UAE certificate equivalency?+

No. Equivalency is assessed on the certificate rather than on which Group 3 option was chosen. For the British track the reported rule is five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that count, plus one accredited Advanced Level subject at no less than E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level. One ranking competitor publishes six subjects; the sourced figure is five. No verified IB points threshold exists for this page, so none is published. Check the current requirement on the Ministry's own channels, and note that equivalency is something families complete with the authority, not something a tutoring service performs.

Our daughter studies Arabic as a first language too. How does the week fit together?+

Carefully, and with the school timetable in front of us. KHDA requires Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies in all Dubai private schools whatever the licensed curriculum, with separate classes organised for Arab and non-Arab students and specified languages of instruction. For an Arabic-first student those are additional contact hours inside an already full Diploma week. We schedule Philosophy around them rather than on top of them, usually one later weekday slot plus a weekend morning, and we keep the written work to one timed essay a week so the load is predictable rather than variable.

What exactly can a Philosophy tutor do with the internal assessment?+

Ask questions and give feedback on the student's own drafts. A tutor can interrogate a stimulus shortlist, test whether a candidate's question is arguable, point out where a paragraph stops doing argumentative work, and explain how the word allocation usually breaks down between stimulus analysis and the argument itself. A tutor cannot propose the thesis, cannot draft or redraft the prose, cannot restructure the document, and cannot supply a reading for the student to cite unread. Our rule is that a tutor may ask any question and may not supply any sentence. Ask any prospective tutor what they will refuse to do, and be wary if the answer is nothing.

Do online lessons work for a subject built on discussion?+

They work well, because the discussion in Diploma Philosophy is one-to-one rather than seminar-shaped. A shared screen with the student's own script on it is arguably better than a kitchen table: both parties annotate the same document, the marked version is saved rather than lost, and the tutor can pull up the prompt wording mid-argument. What online cannot replicate is the corridor conversation and the classroom of eight disagreeing peers. Where a Dubai student has no class at all, we partly compensate by running sessions as sustained argument rather than exposition, which is also what the examination rewards.

Does a tutor working with Dubai students need a MoHRE permit?+

An individual providing private lessons in the UAE needs the private tuition work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023. It is granted free of charge for two years, the eligible categories include school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and students aged 15 to 18, and the application runs through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation service for private tutor licensing. Those without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published, so no figure appears here. Ask any tutor directly, and ask a UAE-resident tutor to show their permit.

What happens if no Philosophy specialist is free at our preferred hour?+

We tell you, and we tell you when a slot is likely rather than filling it quietly. Philosophy has a thin specialist pool across this region, so an honest wait of two or three weeks for the right person is a better outcome than a general humanities tutor assigned without comment. Where it helps, we will say what an adjacent specialist could usefully cover in the meantime, which is usually essay method, command terms and timing rather than the prescribed text. Nothing is charged while you wait, and the free trial lesson still comes first when the slot opens.

Start with the last marked essay, not with a price list

If you are looking for an IB DP Philosophy tutor in Dubai, send the most recent marked script, the optional themes your school has chosen and the prescribed text it has set. A specialist will read it and tell you which of the four purchases on this page your child actually needs, how many hours that is, and whether it is worth starting this term. The AED bands here are other providers' published market figures from October 2026, given so you can judge a quote before you take a call. The first lesson is free, no card is needed to book it, and lessons run one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time.
