Cambridge IGCSE Coordinated Sciences 0654 Tutor in Dubai

A Cambridge IGCSE Coordinated Sciences 0654 tutor in Dubai spends the first conversation explaining what the course is, because almost no family is told. 0654 is a double award: one course, two science grades, content drawn from biology, chemistry and physics at a depth between the single award and three separate subjects. This page sets out what each science actually assesses inside it, where candidates lose marks in each, what the tier decision does to the grade ceiling, and what a session can realistically fix.

What families are not told at the options evening

Most parents meet the phrase Coordinated Sciences on a Year 9 options form and never receive a proper explanation of it. The form offers three science routes with similar-sounding names, the evening runs short, and the decision gets made on a teacher's recommendation about workload. Two years later a family discovers at a sixth-form open day that the route taken has consequences, and by then the entry has been made and the papers have been sat.

So this page starts with the definition. Cambridge IGCSE Co-ordinated Sciences 0654 is a double award. The student studies one coordinated course drawing on biology, chemistry and physics, and receives two grades for it. That is the central fact and it distinguishes 0654 from the single award, which gives one grade, and from three separate sciences, which give three. The content depth sits between the two: more than the single award, less than studying each science as its own subject.

The assessment follows the familiar Cambridge science pattern. There is a multiple-choice component worth 30 per cent, a theory component worth 50 per cent, and a practical component worth 20 per cent, with Core and Extended candidates sitting different multiple-choice and theory papers. Confirm the exact paper numbers and the practical choice on your child's statement of entry and against the current syllabus on the Cambridge International website, because centres make the practical decision at their own level and syllabuses are revised.

What makes 0654 distinctive to teach is the breadth at depth. A single-award course can be covered by a competent generalist. Three separate sciences are taught by three specialists. The double award asks one person to work at close to separate-subject depth in all three, moving from gas exchange to mole calculations to electrical circuits and back, and to know which science each lost mark came from. That is a less common skill than it sounds, and it is the thing worth testing before any plan is agreed. The practical test of it takes four minutes in a trial lesson: ask for a worked example from each of the three sciences, back to back, and listen for where the fluency thins out. A tutor who is strong in one science and approximate in another will steer every hour towards their own strength without intending to, and a fifteen-year-old will let them, because the alternative is harder work.

IB Gram is an independent matching platform. Tutoring for families in Dubai and across the Emirates is delivered one-to-one over live video; we do not make home visits in Dubai, as that is a service we run only in India. Nothing on this page claims an approval or affiliation from KHDA, the Ministry of Education, Cambridge International or any school named here, and no grade is promised. What follows is the content detail and the mark-loss patterns, which is the information the options evening did not have time for.

OPTAges 13-14 · Year 9

The Year 9 science options decision

The point at which a Dubai school recommends the single award, the double award or three separate sciences, usually on the basis of current attainment and overall timetable load. The recommendation is about workload capacity rather than ambition, and it is the one stage where a family has genuine influence over what follows.

Ask the head of science two specific questions: what attainment the school looks for before placing a student on separate sciences, and whether its own sixth form accepts the double award for entry to each A Level science. Get the second answer in writing, because it is the one that matters in two years.

Cambridge IGCSE Co-ordinated Sciences 0654

The course itself, taught as one coordinated programme with content from biology, chemistry and physics. Two grades are awarded. The breadth means the scheme of work moves between sciences frequently, which suits some students and leaves others feeling they never settle into any of the three.

In Dubai this is the most common compromise route in British-curriculum schools, used where a department wants students to keep post-16 science open without carrying three separate subject loads alongside mandatory Arabic and Islamic Education streams.

TIERSAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Core and Extended entries for 0654

The entry decision made by the centre before the final deadline. Extended candidates carry supplement content across all three sciences and have access to the higher grades; Core candidates sit different papers with a lower ceiling. One lesson plan cannot serve both, because roughly a third of an Extended candidate's material is content a Core candidate is never taught.

Cambridge entry deadlines sit months before the papers. A Dubai candidate sits the June series, with November as the resit route, and in both the entry that fixes the tier closes well ahead of the first paper: the spring for a June sitting, the summer for a November one. The exact day is printed on the centre's statement of entry rather than published as a single national date, because Cambridge timetables each of its six administrative zones separately. Whatever series your child sits, the window to discuss a tier change closes long before revision peaks.

A Level and IB Diploma sciences after 0654

Where the double award is tested. Two science grades read well on a certificate, and the content gap to a separate-subject A Level is real, concentrated in the material the coordinated course covers less deeply. The first term of A Level Chemistry in particular asks for fluency that 0654 touches rather than drills.

Dubai sixth forms set their own conditions and they differ. Some accept the double award for any A Level science, some ask for a separate-subject grade for a specific one. With seven new private schools and 16,846 new places arriving for the 2026-27 intake, criteria from two years ago are not a safe guide.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

0654 draws on the same three sciences as the separate subjects but at a different depth. These are the codes a Dubai family will see on option forms and statements of entry, with what each actually asks of a student.

Cambridge IGCSE Co-ordinated Sciences (0654)

Core and Extended, double award

One course, two grades, content from all three sciences. The breadth is the challenge rather than the difficulty of any single topic: a student has to hold biological mechanism, chemical proportion and physical formula work simultaneously, and the papers move between them without warning.

Cambridge IGCSE Combined Science (0653)

Core and Extended, single award

The lighter route, awarding one grade. Less content than 0654 and fewer guided hours. Worth understanding as the alternative, because a school occasionally moves a struggling 0654 student onto it, and that changes both the revision plan and the post-16 options.

Cambridge IGCSE Biology (0610)

Core and Extended

The separate-subject version of the biology inside 0654, with twenty-one topics taken to greater depth. Useful as a reference point: a 0654 student meets most of the same ideas but is not expected to carry the same level of detail in each.

Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry (0620)

Core and Extended

The separate-subject chemistry, where organic chemistry and quantitative work go considerably further than the coordinated course requires. This is the biggest content gap for a 0654 student heading towards A Level Chemistry.

Cambridge IGCSE Physics (0625)

Core and Extended

The separate-subject physics, with more formula work and more extended calculation. A 0654 student arriving at A Level Physics usually finds the mathematics rather than the concepts is the gap to close.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Science (Double Award, 4SD0)

Single tier

The Pearson equivalent of the double award, used by some Dubai centres. Different paper structure, different practical arrangements and a different series calendar, so Cambridge past papers are not a substitute. Check the board on the statement of entry.

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics (0580)

Core and Extended

The quiet determinant of a 0654 grade. Proportional reasoning, rearranging relationships, unit conversion and graph reading all appear inside the chemistry and physics content, and a student weak in any of them loses the same marks in every paper.

Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language (0510)

Core and Extended

Relevant because extended-writing science marks depend on precise terminology. A student holding the science in a second language can lose marks per question to vocabulary rather than understanding, which a marked script makes visible.

A Level sciences

AS and A2

The destination that gives the 0654 decision its weight. The content gap from the double award is real but bridgeable, and it is concentrated in the first term, mostly in quantitative chemistry and in the mathematical handling of physical relationships.

IB Diploma sciences

HL and SL

The other Dubai post-16 route. Standard Level sciences are generally accessible from the double award; Higher Level, particularly Chemistry, assumes a depth that 0654 introduces rather than secures. Schools set their own Higher Level conditions.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways of structuring 0654 support, all delivered one-to-one over live video. The right one depends on whether the problem is breadth, depth in one science, or the paper itself.

Rotating cover across the three sciences

For a student whose difficulty is breadth rather than any one science. The session rotates on a fixed cycle so no science goes untouched for more than three weeks, with a short recall check at the start on whichever science was covered two sessions earlier. Suits the double award better than a single-science focus does.

  • Fixed rotation so no science is left for more than three weeks
  • Recall check on the science covered two sessions earlier
  • One topic map covering all three bodies of content

Depth block on one science

For the common case where one of the three is dramatically weaker, usually the chemistry. Four to six consecutive sessions on that science alone, taken to the depth the Extended tier requires, before the rotation resumes. The other two sciences are maintained by short exam-question sets rather than teaching.

  • Consecutive sessions on the weakest science only
  • Extended supplement content covered explicitly where the entry requires it
  • Other two sciences maintained by short question sets

Paper-technique block before a series

For a student whose content coverage is broadly sound and whose marks do not reflect it. Full-length papers under timing, marked before the session, with the lesson spent entirely on the dropped marks and on the discipline of moving between sciences inside one paper without losing pace.

  • Papers sat at full length and marked before the lesson
  • Pacing practised across science transitions within a paper
  • Practical component prepared as a separate strand

01

What the 0654 double award assesses, component by component

The first thing worth having is a clear picture of where the marks are. Coordinated Sciences 0654 is assessed through three components: a multiple-choice paper worth 30 per cent, a theory paper worth 50 per cent, and a practical component worth 20 per cent. Core and Extended candidates sit different multiple-choice and theory papers. The practical component is either a supervised practical test or a written alternative, and the centre chooses which. Confirm the exact paper numbers against your child's statement of entry and the current syllabus on the Cambridge International website.

Half the grade arriving in one theory paper is the structural fact that should shape a revision plan. It means theory technique is the highest-yield thing to fix, ahead of content breadth, and it means a student who writes well but knows less can outscore a student who knows more and writes imprecisely. It also means a bad morning in one paper carries a lot of weight, which is an argument for full-length timed practice rather than topic-by-topic revision in the final weeks.

The multiple-choice component punishes a specific weakness that students rarely identify in themselves. Close distractors are designed to be chosen by somebody who recognises the topic without securely knowing it, which is exactly the state produced by rereading notes. A student scoring lower on multiple choice than on the theory paper is telling you their recall is recognition-level, and the remedy is retrieval practice rather than more reading.

The practical component is a fifth of the grade and the part Dubai households almost never revise. Across all three sciences it tests the same closed list of skills: identifying variables and controls, building a results table with units in the headings, choosing graph axes so a trend can be read, spotting an anomalous result and saying what to do about it, and suggesting a method improvement that genuinely reduces error. Every one of those is a rule, and rules respond quickly to teaching.

02

The biology inside 0654: what is kept and what is lighter

Families moving between the double award and the separate biology syllabus want to know what is different, and the honest answer is depth rather than coverage. The big ideas are all present. Cells and the organisation of the organism, movement of substances across membranes, enzymes, nutrition in plants and humans, transport, gas exchange and respiration, coordination and response, reproduction and inheritance, and ecology including human effects on the environment. A 0654 student meets that landscape.

What is lighter is the level of detail expected within each. The separate syllabus asks for more named structures, more biochemical specificity and more quantitative treatment of data. For tutoring this is good news and a trap at the same time. It is good news because a student can secure the biology marks in 0654 without the memory load of the separate course. It is a trap because the questions still reward precision in the terms used, and a student who has learnt a topic approximately will write approximately and score nothing.

The mark-loss pattern in the biology questions is consistent and it is almost never a knowledge problem. It is register. Describe answers are given to explain questions, which means the student says what happens when the mark scheme wanted a mechanism connecting cause to effect. Comparison questions get two separate paragraphs that never compare anything. Questions asking for a suggestion get left blank because the content was not in the notes, which guarantees zero where a reasoned attempt might have scored.

What a session fixes here is quick and measurable. Count the marks, plan that many separate credited points, force a because or a therefore into every explain answer, and use whereas as a structural device in comparisons. Students usually find biology is the first science where the technique work shows up in a marked paper, which makes it a useful place to start when confidence is low.

03

The chemistry inside 0654: where the calculation marks live

  • Set up the relationship in writing before substituting anything
  • Convert to consistent units before touching a formula
  • Show every step, because partial working can earn partial credit
  • Sanity-check the answer against the scale of the quantities involved

Chemistry is where the double award is hardest and where tutoring time concentrates. The qualitative content is approachable: states of matter, atoms and bonding, the periodic table, acids and bases, rates of reaction, energy changes, electrolysis, and an introduction to organic chemistry. Students generally cope with all of it. The marks go elsewhere.

They go to the quantitative work. Relative formula mass, moles, reacting masses, concentration and percentage yield are not chemistry problems in the way students expect. They are proportional reasoning with units attached, and they require a student to set up a relationship, rearrange it, substitute correctly and carry the units through. A candidate who cannot do that reliably loses the same marks in every paper no matter how much chemistry they revise, which is the single most common reason a 0654 grade sits below what a family expected.

This has a consequence for how a tutoring plan looks and it needs saying in advance. The first three or four sessions on a weak chemistry strand go to the arithmetic underneath it, during which the chemistry marks do not move at all. Families routinely read that flat period as the tutoring failing. It is the only order the work can be done in: there is no way to fix reacting-mass questions without first fixing the proportional reasoning they are built on.

The second recurring loss is multi-step working abandoned part way. A student computes a relative formula mass correctly, then stops, because the next step is unclear and the clock is running. Partial working often earns partial credit, so the habit worth building is to keep writing: state the relationship, substitute what is known, and show the step even when the final number does not arrive. That is a technique change rather than a knowledge change, and it is worth marks in every paper.

04

The physics inside 0654: formula work and graph marks

Physics in the double award is where marks are most volatile rather than most missing. The content is a recognisable core: motion, forces and pressure, energy and its transfers, waves including light and sound, thermal physics, electricity and magnetism, and an introduction to nuclear physics. Most students can explain the ideas. What decides the marks is whether the calculation routine runs automatically under time pressure.

Four steps have to happen in sequence and students lose marks at each of them. Selecting the right relationship from the handful that could apply. Rearranging it correctly. Converting units so that the quantities are compatible, which is where the majority of errors live. Then completing the arithmetic and attaching the correct unit to the answer. A student who can do all four calmly at home will still drop them in a timed paper until the sequence requires no thought, which is why physics scores swing between consecutive papers.

Graph questions carry marks that are entirely procedural and therefore entirely recoverable. Choosing axes with sensible scales, plotting accurately, drawing a line that answers the question rather than joining every point, reading a value off the line rather than off the nearest data point, and calculating a gradient with units attached. None of that is physics knowledge and all of it is credited. It is the quickest available improvement in the physics questions and it is almost never practised deliberately.

The table sets out the patterns we see most often in marked 0654 scripts, with the fix for each. The remedy across all of them is short, frequent and unpopular: the same calculation and graph types repeated until the method is reflexive. Twenty minutes twice a week beats an hour once a fortnight, which is why exam-term sessions get shorter and more frequent rather than longer.

05

Core or Extended for 0654, and what the ceiling means

The tier is the most consequential thing about a 0654 entry and the thing families least often know. Core and Extended candidates sit different multiple-choice and theory papers. Extended candidates carry supplement content across all three sciences on top of the core material and have access to the higher grades. Core candidates sit a narrower body of content with a lower ceiling. One lesson plan cannot serve both, because a meaningful share of an Extended candidate's material is content a Core candidate is simply never taught.

The entry is made by the centre, not by the parent and not by the tutor, and it is made on the evidence the school has: classroom performance and mock results. It is also made before the final entry deadline, which sits months ahead of the papers. The gap is wider than it sounds. An entry for the June series goes in during the spring term, an entry for the November series goes in over the summer, and in neither case does the deadline sit anywhere near the papers it governs. The date that binds your child is the one on the centre's own statement of entry. The practical consequence is that the window for influencing a tier decision is Year 10 and the first term of Year 11.

If a sixth-form science place is the ambition and the current entry is Core, that conversation needs to happen early and with evidence. A marked past paper scored against the published points, with the loss attributed to each science, is a better basis for the discussion than an opinion about potential. Teachers respond to evidence about their own subject. Occasionally the answer will still be no, and then the honest planning question becomes what a strong Core grade leaves open and what a bridging term would need to cover.

What a tutor can do is make the Extended tier survivable. Supplement content is not conceptually harder so much as denser, and it concentrates in particular places: more quantitative chemistry, more detail in transport and gas exchange, more extended calculation in physics. A session plan for an Extended candidate has to name that material explicitly rather than hoping it is picked up in general coverage.

Two grades, and what they do for equivalency

Beyond university and sixth form there is a Ministry of Education process most competitor pages in this market ignore entirely. Equivalency is how a UAE authority recognises a school-leaving certificate, and on the British track the published requirement is specific: five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates with a grade of no less than E or grade 3, plus proof of one accredited subject at Advanced Level with a grade of no less than E, or two accredited subjects at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade.

One clause matters more than the rest for a science decision. Arabic and Islamic education are not included among the five required subjects. That means a Dubai student carrying mandatory Arabic and Islamic Education streams cannot count them towards the five, and the remaining accredited subjects have to supply the number. A ranking competitor page in this market states that UAE candidates must take six IGCSE subjects, which is wrong; the published rule is five.

This is where the double award earns something concrete. Two science grades from one course contribute more to that count of five than the single award's one grade does, which is a narrow, practical argument for 0654 over 0653 that has nothing to do with how hard either course is. A family counting accredited subjects on an options form is doing a more useful piece of planning than most families manage at that stage.

Two cautions belong here. IB Gram does not perform or influence equivalency, and tutoring is not required for it; implying otherwise would be a false-urgency claim about a government process. And the figures above are the British-track rules as published in a secondary source. Verify the current requirements through the Ministry of Education's own channel before relying on them, and treat any published IB points threshold with suspicion unless it has been read on the Ministry's own pages.

07

Why 0654 students find the first A Level term hard

A double-award student who arrives in a Dubai sixth form with two solid science grades can still find the first term of an A Level science uncomfortable, and knowing why in advance turns it from a crisis into a plan. The gap is not general ability. It is specific content depth in a small number of places, and it is bridgeable in a few weeks of targeted work rather than a year of catching up.

In chemistry the gap is quantitative. A separate-subject IGCSE course drills moles, reacting masses, concentration and yield to a level the coordinated course introduces. An A Level Chemistry course assumes that fluency from the first week and builds on it immediately, so a student still thinking carefully about proportional reasoning is reasoning about the wrong layer of the problem. This is the most common place a 0654 student struggles and the most responsive to a short bridging block before term starts.

In physics the gap is mathematical rather than conceptual. Rearranging relationships with several variables, handling standard form, and working confidently with units are assumed rather than taught, and the coordinated course asks for less of all three. In biology the gap is memory load and precision of terminology: A Level biology rewards exact naming in a way the double award does not require, so a student used to approximate answers has a habit to change rather than a body of content to learn.

The useful conclusion is about sequencing rather than about ability. A student moving from 0654 to an A Level science benefits far more from four weeks of quantitative work in the summer than from reading ahead in the new textbook. If the destination is already known in Year 11, that bridging work can be built into the final term rather than squeezed into August, which is the kind of planning a documented record of which science is strongest makes possible.

08

The options evening questions, and the honesty boundary

If this page is read before a Year 9 options form rather than after it, five questions are worth taking into the evening. What attainment does the department look for before placing a student on three separate sciences? Does our own sixth form accept the double award for entry to each A Level science, and can we have that in writing? When is the Core and Extended decision made, and on what evidence? Which practical component does the centre enter candidates for? And how many accredited subjects will my child finish with, given the mandatory Arabic and Islamic Education streams on the timetable?

Those are all questions the school holds the answers to, and a department will generally answer them straightforwardly because they are questions about their own subject rather than complaints. The one worth insisting on in writing is the sixth-form condition, because it is the answer that matters in two years and the one most likely to be remembered differently by both sides.

On what a tutor contributes, the boundary should be stated rather than implied. A tutor teaches, explains, demonstrates on examples that are not assessed work, marks past papers against the board's published points, and gives feedback on work the student has produced themselves. A tutor does not supply text for submission and does not hand over bundles of board material. Cambridge publishes syllabuses, past papers and mark schemes free on its own website; we reference and link them rather than redistributing them.

Two final disclosures. IB Gram is an independent matching platform with no premises in the UAE and no KHDA Educational Services Permit, which is a specific authorisation issued to training institutes with physical premises. It is not approved, accredited, licensed or endorsed by KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, Cambridge International or Pearson, and has no relationship with any school named on this page. And anyone charging for private lessons in the UAE needs a MoHRE private tuition work permit under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, which is granted free of charge for two years and is a reasonable thing to ask a prospective tutor about.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Dubai

These are the Dubai communities we are asked about most for coordinated sciences, with the local pattern that affects when a session can run and what the school provision tends to look like.

Emirates Hills and the Meadows

Large villa community with several schools immediately adjacent, so journeys home are short and weekday sessions from 16:30 are workable. Families here tend to be planning towards specific sixth-form destinations, which makes the double-award question about post-16 entry rather than about workload.

Jumeirah Islands and Jumeirah Heights

Compact villa and townhouse community between the Marina and the Barsha school corridor. Small Year 11 cohorts mean an individual weak science often goes unaddressed by whole-class revision, which is exactly the gap a marked breakdown identifies.

Tilal Al Ghaf and Dubai Hills

Newer communities with recently opened school capacity on the southern corridor. Provision is still settling, so families here often start weekly support earlier rather than relying on established in-school revision programmes.

Arabian Ranches 2 and 3

Villa communities built around their own school provision, with short journeys and reliable early-evening slots. Coordinated sciences entries are common here because departments balance a broad intake against sixth-form expectations.

Dubai Festival City and Ras Al Khor

Schools close by with awkward approach roads at peak times. The constraint is the drive rather than the distance, which is why families here consistently prefer a format that does not depend on a tutor completing a journey.

Al Garhoud and Oud Metha

Long-established school corridor with a wide mix of curricula and wide ability ranges in single year groups. Core and Extended 0654 entries frequently sit side by side here, which makes the tier question the first thing a tutor should establish.

Al Barari and Nad Al Sheba

Spread-out villa communities where every journey is long. Weekend morning sessions work better than weekday evenings for full-length paper practice, which matters for a course with three separate bodies of content to revise.

Dubai Investments Park and Green Community

Western industrial and residential mix with schools nearby but a thin local market for a specific syllabus code at Extended tier. Video delivery puts a double-award specialist at the same distance as a general science tutor.

Emirates Hills, the Meadows and the southern villa corridor

Established provision across British and IB curricula, inspected by KHDA on its six-band scale from Outstanding to Very Weak. Students we support in this corridor are usually on a coordinated or separate-science entry and are planning towards a named sixth form, which makes the post-16 conditions the live question.

Confirm it is the double award

A surprising number of families do not know whether their child is on the single award, the double award or separate sciences. The statement of entry settles it, along with the tier and the practical component. Those three facts decide what the first month of sessions contains, and all three are held by the school.

  2. 02

Mark a paper and split it three ways

A released past paper at the right tier, sat under exam timing and scored against the published points, with the marks totalled separately for biology, chemistry and physics. For a double award this split is the whole diagnosis, because the two grades hide which of the three sciences is carrying the loss.

  3. 03

Free trial lesson, tested across all three

One full-length one-to-one video session at no charge, with no card details taken. Ask the tutor for a reacting-mass calculation, an explain-style biology answer and a parallel-circuit problem. The double award needs someone who can work at depth in all three rather than a generalist who is comfortable in one.

  4. 04

Choose rotation or a depth block

If the difficulty is breadth, a fixed rotation keeps all three sciences live and no topic cold for more than three weeks. If one science is dramatically weaker, four to six consecutive sessions on that science alone works better, with the other two maintained by short question sets rather than teaching.

  5. 05

    Review against a comparable paper

Six to eight weeks in, the same tier and paper format under the same timing, marked the same way, with the three-way split repeated. The comparison is the review. If nothing has moved, the plan changes or the tutor does, and that is a conversation we start rather than one you should have to chase.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The double award is taught as what it is

0654 asks one tutor to work at close to separate-subject depth in three sciences and to move between them without losing the thread. That is a different job from teaching a single award, and it is testable in a trial lesson by asking for a worked example from each science rather than taking it on trust.

Marks are attributed to a science, then to a topic

Two grades still hide which of the three sciences is costing your child. Every paper is scored and split three ways, then tagged to topics inside the weakest science, so the hours go to measured loss rather than to whichever science the tutor teaches most comfortably.

The tier is established before any plan

Core and Extended candidates sit different papers and a meaningful part of the Extended body of content is never taught to Core candidates. Supplement material is named and timetabled explicitly, and past-paper practice uses the right tier, because the wrong one mistrains both pacing and expectations.

The practical component gets protected time

A fifth of the grade sits in a component households almost never revise, and across all three sciences it tests the same closed list of recording and evaluation rules. It is timetabled as its own strand so it is not displaced every time a content topic feels more urgent.

Claims stop where the evidence stops

No regulator or board approval is claimed, no school is presented as a partner, and no grade or improvement figure is published, because none could be shown with a sample size, a date and a method. Market rates carry their source, regulations cite the government page that states them.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

What does the double award in Cambridge IGCSE Coordinated Sciences 0654 actually mean?+

It means one course produces two science grades. A student studies a coordinated programme drawing on biology, chemistry and physics and receives two grades for it, where the single award produces one grade and three separate sciences produce three. The content depth sits between those two options: more than the single award, less than studying each science as its own subject. Assessment follows the Cambridge science pattern of a multiple-choice component, a theory component and a practical component, with Core and Extended candidates sitting different papers.

How many grades will my child get from 0654, and how do they appear?+

Two science grades from the one course. Confirm how your child's school reports and records them, because families planning sixth-form applications sometimes assume a single averaged grade. The practical value of two grades is both in how a certificate reads and in the Ministry of Education equivalency count on the British track, where five accredited subjects at grade E or 3 or better are required and Arabic and Islamic education are not counted among the five.

Is 0654 harder than taking three separate sciences?+

Different rather than harder. Separate sciences ask for more depth in each subject and more total content, which is a larger memory and workload demand. The double award asks for breadth at a middling depth, and its particular difficulty is that papers move between the three sciences without warning, so a student has to hold three kinds of thinking at once. Students who dislike rapid switching sometimes find the coordinated course less comfortable than they expected, even though the content load is lighter.

Which papers does an Extended 0654 candidate sit?+

An Extended candidate sits the Extended multiple-choice paper, the Extended theory paper covering core plus supplement content across all three sciences, and one practical component, either the supervised practical test or the written alternative depending on what the centre has chosen. The multiple-choice component is worth 30 per cent, the theory paper 50 per cent and the practical component 20 per cent. Confirm the exact paper numbers on the statement of entry and against the current syllabus on the Cambridge International website.

Which biology topics are lighter in 0654 than in the separate biology syllabus?+

The coverage is broadly the same landscape and the depth is what differs. Cells, transport across membranes, enzymes, nutrition, transport in plants and animals, gas exchange, respiration, coordination, reproduction, inheritance and ecology all appear. The separate syllabus asks for more named structures, more biochemical specificity and more quantitative handling of data. The trap is that 0654 questions still reward precise terminology, so a student who has learnt a topic approximately writes approximately and scores nothing.

Does 0654 include mole calculations?+

Quantitative chemistry is part of the course and it is where most of the chemistry marks are lost. Relative formula mass, moles, reacting masses, concentration and yield are proportional reasoning with units attached rather than chemistry recall, so a student who cannot reliably set up and rearrange a relationship loses the same marks in every paper. Expect a plan that spends its first few sessions on the arithmetic underneath, during which the chemistry marks do not move. That lag is normal and it is the only workable order.

Where do 0654 candidates lose the most physics marks?+

In the four-step calculation routine, and mostly at step three. Selecting the right relationship, rearranging it, converting units so quantities are compatible, then completing the arithmetic with the correct unit attached. Unit conversion is where the majority of errors live, especially time given in minutes and used as seconds. Graph questions are the other recoverable area: points joined dot to dot instead of a line of best fit, values read off the nearest point rather than off the line, and gradients quoted with no unit.

Can my daughter go on to A Level Chemistry after the double award?+

Often yes, and the condition is set by your own school rather than nationally. Some Dubai sixth forms accept the double award for any A Level science and some ask for a separate-subject grade for a specific one, so get the answer in writing from the head of sixth form. Where the route is open, expect the first term to be demanding in the quantitative work, because A Level Chemistry assumes mole fluency from week one. Four weeks of targeted quantitative work before term starts closes most of that gap.

Do both 0654 grades count towards UAE Ministry of Education equivalency?+

On the British track the Ministry requires five accredited subjects at GCSE or IGCSE with a grade of no less than E or grade 3, plus one Advanced Level subject at E or two Advanced Subsidiary Level subjects at the same grade, and Arabic and Islamic education are not included among the five. Two science grades contribute more to that count than the single award's one grade. Confirm how the subjects are treated through the Ministry's own channel, because IB Gram neither performs nor influences equivalency and tutoring is not required for it.

Should my son take 0654 or the single award 0653 in Dubai?+

The honest answer depends on timetable capacity and on destination. The double award gives two grades and more content; the single award gives one grade and less. If post-16 science is a possibility, the double award keeps more doors open and contributes more accredited subjects to the equivalency count. If your child is already carrying a heavy timetable including mandatory Arabic and Islamic Education streams and is struggling, a strong single-award grade beats a weak double award. Ask the school what it recommends and why.

How is the practical component assessed in the coordinated course?+

It is worth 20 per cent and the centre chooses between a supervised practical test and a written alternative. Across all three sciences it tests the same closed list: identifying variables and controls, building a results table with units in the headings, choosing graph axes so a trend is readable, spotting an anomalous result and saying what to do about it, and suggesting a method improvement that genuinely reduces error. Those are rules rather than knowledge, which is why the component responds quickly to a protected strand of sessions.

How many tutoring hours does a 0654 student need across the two years?+

A student working weekly in step with the school from the start of Year 10 is looking at around thirty sessions a year, which is the cheapest effective pattern because it is teaching rather than repair. A Year 11 student starting after winter mocks typically needs eighteen to twenty-five sessions before a June series, with four to six of those protected for the practical component. A student six weeks out has about twelve hours, which can rebuild two topics and fix technique but cannot replace a year of content.

My child is in the Core 0654 set but wants the Extended entry - what can we do?+

Raise it with the head of science while the entry is still open, and bring evidence rather than an opinion. A marked past paper at the Extended tier, scored against the published points with the loss attributed to each science, is a far better basis than a conversation about potential. Entry deadlines sit months before the papers in both the series a Dubai candidate can sit: the June entry closes in the spring and the November entry over the summer. Ask the exams officer for the date that governs your child's centre, since it varies by administrative zone. The window is Year 10 and the first term of Year 11.

Which kinds of Dubai schools put students on the coordinated course, and why?+

It is the common compromise route in British-curriculum schools across the emirate, which account for the largest share of private-school enrolment. Departments use it where they want students to keep post-16 science open without carrying three separate subject loads alongside the mandatory Arabic, Islamic Education and social studies streams that all Dubai private schools must run regardless of their licensed curriculum. The recommendation is usually about timetable capacity rather than about a judgement on ability.

Get the tier and the three-way split before anything else

Coordinated Sciences 0654 is a double award, and the two grades still hide which of the three sciences is costing your child marks. A useful first step with any Cambridge IGCSE Coordinated Sciences 0654 tutor in Dubai is narrow: confirm the tier from the statement of entry, then get a past paper at that tier marked against the published points with the losses attributed to biology, chemistry and physics separately. That document is what a plan is built from. The trial lesson is a full-length one-to-one video session at no charge, with no card details taken, and it is a good place to test whether a tutor can work at depth in all three.
