IB DP Math AA SL Tutor in Dubai

An IB DP Math AA SL tutor in Dubai is easy to find and hard to judge, because the most common output of a maths session is a student who could do it while somebody was watching. This page is about the harder evidence: the same question type three weeks later with no prompt, the skill recognised when it is disguised inside a different question, and a dated exploration version history. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

  • Progress measured by delayed, unprompted attempts, not by lesson-time success
  • Every marked script carries the markscheme reference beside the mark
  • Dated exploration version history, with the student as sole author
  • One-to-one over live video, scheduled around Dubai school and mock timetables

The problem with a maths lesson that went well

Almost every maths tutorial feels successful at the end. The student follows the worked example, nods at the right moments, completes the practice question with a prompt or two, and leaves with the sense that the topic is sorted. Three weeks later the same question appears on a mock paper in a slightly different form and the method is gone. This is not a failure of the tutor's explanation. It is a failure of the evidence: nothing in that session tested whether the method had been learnt rather than followed.

That distinction is the whole of this page. Lesson-time success is the cheapest and least informative evidence available, and it is what most families are shown. The evidence that actually predicts an Analysis and Approaches SL grade has three properties: it is delayed, so recall is being tested rather than imitation; it is unprompted, so the student has to choose the method rather than apply the one just demonstrated; and it is disguised, so the skill has to be recognised inside a question that does not announce which topic it belongs to.

Delivery, stated plainly before anything else. IB Gram provides tuition in Dubai as one-to-one lessons over live video. There are no home visits in the UAE; that is a service offered only in India. For a maths page this is less of a compromise than parents expect, because the format is better suited to evidence: written working is photographed or written on a shared surface, annotation sits on the document, and the markscheme reference stays attached to the mark. A visiting tutor leaves with the explanation in the air and nothing on file.

Analysis and Approaches at Standard Level is a particularly good course to apply this to, because its published assessment structure is clean. Two written papers, one sat without a calculator and one with technology permitted, carrying the bulk of the grade between them, plus the mathematical exploration worth a fifth of it. A student can be competent at the content of all five syllabus topics and still sit in the middle of the grade range because of how marks are collected under time pressure, and that gap is exactly what delayed, unprompted, disguised evidence exposes.

Dubai adds its own layer. This is the densest private-school market in the country, inspected annually by the regulator on a six-band scale, and the pacing of a Diploma maths class varies enormously between schools. A student in a strong cohort can be taught at the pace of the fastest third and arrive at the exploration still shaky on calculus. None of that shows up in a report grade, and all of it shows up in a marked script.

What follows is a hierarchy of evidence, a delayed-recall protocol you can run yourself, the four disguises an AA SL skill arrives in, what a properly annotated script looks like, how the exploration version history works, and the three different numbers a Dubai school will give you about the same child. The last section says when the evidence means the tutoring should end.

At a glance

  • Lesson-time success proves almost nothing and is what families are usually shown
  • Useful evidence is delayed, unprompted and disguised
  • Paper 1 is sat without a calculator and rewards written argument over answers
  • The exploration carries a fifth of the Standard Level grade and has one author
  • Dubai class pacing varies by school and never appears on a report
  • Report grade, mock grade and predicted grade are three different things
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Four routes sit around an Analysis and Approaches SL candidate in Dubai, and the evidence a parent should ask for differs across them. Knowing which one your child is on prevents the most common mistake, which is reading a criterion-referenced grade as if it were a percentage.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma Programme

Six subjects graded 1 to 7, plus up to three points from the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge combination. Mathematics is compulsory, which is why Analysis and Approaches SL is one of the most widely sat courses in any Dubai cohort and why its tutoring market is the busiest.

Dubai Diploma candidates sit in schools whose internal assessment deadlines are set by their own coordinator, often several weeks earlier than families assume. Those dates govern when exploration evidence has to exist, so a plan is built from the coordinator's sheet rather than from a generic programme calendar.

AASLAges 16-19 · Across both Diploma years

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches SL

Two written papers, one without a calculator and one with technology permitted, plus the mathematical exploration. The course covers number and algebra, functions, geometry and trigonometry, statistics and probability, and calculus. The published weighting puts the exploration at a fifth of the final grade.

In most Dubai schools this is the default maths course for students who are not heading into engineering or pure mathematics but need a recognised quantitative qualification. That makes the cohort wide in ability, and the class pace a compromise that leaves distinct gaps in individual students.

AAHLAges 16-19 · Across both Diploma years

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches HL

The same subject family with greater depth and an additional paper of extended problem-solving. Relevant here because a meaningful number of Dubai students begin at Higher Level and move down, and the evidence trail should make that decision on marks rather than on how hard the course feels.

A route change has a deadline set by the school rather than the board, so the window for moving is narrower than families expect. Two dated marked scripts on comparable question types are the evidence a coordinator will take seriously in that conversation.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

IB Middle Years Programme

Assessed against criteria A to D on an eight-point achievement scale rather than as percentages. Students arriving into Analysis and Approaches SL from MYP 5 are comfortable with criterion-referenced work and often unpractised at timed papers marked against a markscheme.

Several Dubai schools run a full continuum from the Primary Years Programme through to the Diploma, so a student may never have sat an externally marked timed paper before DP1. The first marked script in that case is a diagnosis of exam behaviour as much as of mathematics.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Analysis and Approaches SL is five topics and one piece of coursework. Below, each is described by the evidence that shows the skill has actually transferred, because transfer rather than exposure is what a grade measures.

Number and algebra

Analysis and Approaches SL

Sequences, series, exponents, logarithms and the binomial expansion. Transfer looks like a student recognising a geometric structure inside a word problem about depreciation without being told the topic. Doing a bare sequence question correctly proves only that they were on the right page.

Functions

Analysis and Approaches SL

Transformations, composite and inverse functions, quadratics and rational functions. The transfer test is a sketch question with no instruction naming the transformation. Students who can answer when told to translate often cannot read the transformation out of an equation three weeks later.

Geometry and trigonometry

Analysis and Approaches SL

Triangle rules, radians, trigonometric identities and equations. Transfer shows up when a trigonometric identity is needed inside a calculus question rather than in a section headed trigonometry, which is where most SL candidates lose the marks.

Statistics and probability

Analysis and Approaches SL

Data presentation, regression, probability rules, discrete and normal distributions. The marks lost are usually not statistical: they are unstated conditions and results given without interpretation. A transfer test asks for a conclusion in context, which many students never practise.

Calculus

Analysis and Approaches SL

Differentiation, integration, kinematics and optimisation. The single richest source of disguised questions in the course, because a rate of change can arrive dressed as a volume, a cost or a velocity. Fluency at bare differentiation is weak evidence of anything here.

Paper 1 technique, no calculator

Analysis and Approaches SL

A separate skill from the mathematics. Exact values, surd and fraction handling, and writing the step that earns the method mark. Evidence of improvement is the appearance of intermediate lines in the working, which is countable on a script without any mathematical judgement.

Paper 2 technique, technology permitted

Analysis and Approaches SL

Knowing which tool to reach for and recording enough on paper to earn method credit anyway. The recurring loss is a correct screen result with nothing written down, which scores a fraction of the same answer supported by stated reasoning.

The mathematical exploration

Analysis and Approaches SL

Coursework carrying a fifth of the grade, assessed against lettered criteria. The evidence is a dated version history: the student's own drafts with criterion-referenced comments attached, which demonstrates both development and sole authorship.

Physics and Economics as paired subjects

HL and SL

Included because disguised mathematics appears here first. A student losing kinematics marks in Physics is usually telling you something about their calculus transfer, and that cross-subject signal often arrives weeks before the maths teacher sees it.

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay

Core

Relevant where a student chooses a mathematics-based Extended Essay. The same authorship rule applies as to the exploration: criterion-referenced questioning, a dated draft trail, and every sentence written by the candidate.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

The format matters here because the evidence protocol needs a particular rhythm: teaching in one session, an unprompted attempt in a later one, and marking in between. Three arrangements support that, and they differ in how much delay they can build in.

Weekly one-to-one, 60 minutes

The standard arrangement. Twenty minutes reviewing the marked attempt from the previous week, thirty on the current target, and ten setting the unprompted task that becomes evidence later. The weekly spacing is what makes delayed recall possible at all, which is why a fortnight of nothing followed by a long session is a worse plan.

  • One marked artefact produced every week
  • The spacing itself is part of the method
  • Fits a Dubai school evening without displacing independent study

Weekend long session, 90 to 120 minutes

Used for a complete Paper 1 or Paper 2 under timed conditions, which cannot be done properly in an hour. This is where the disguised questions live, because a full paper is the only setting in which a student has to choose the method without knowing the topic in advance.

  • A full timed paper, marked against the published markscheme
  • The only reliable test of method selection under time pressure
  • Script returned annotated before the next weekday session

Exploration block against the school's deadline

A scoped set of sessions attached to the coordinator's submission date rather than to a weekly slot. Each session ends with the student holding a question to answer in writing, and the version history records what came back. The block closes when the work is submitted.

  • Dated version history with the student as sole author
  • Criterion-referenced comments, never replacement text
  • Ends on the school's submission date, not by renewal

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai

01

What an IB DP Math AA SL tutor in Dubai should actually be able to prove

Start with the direct answer, because the search deserves one. A tutor for Analysis and Approaches at Standard Level in Dubai can show you four kinds of evidence, and they are not equally worth having. The weakest is the one most commonly offered, which is a report that the session went well and the student understood the topic. The strongest is an unprompted attempt at a disguised question several weeks after the teaching, marked against the published markscheme.

Lessons are delivered one-to-one over live video. There are no home visits in the UAE; home tutoring is an India-only service. For this subject the format is an advantage rather than a concession, because the evidence protocol depends on written work moving between sessions and being annotated on the document. Working is written on a shared surface or photographed and marked up, the markscheme reference stays beside the mark, and the file accumulates. A visiting tutor leaves the explanation in the room and the notebook with the student.

The reason this matters more in mathematics than in most subjects is that mathematical understanding is unusually easy to simulate. A student who has just watched a method can reproduce it for twenty minutes without having learnt anything durable, and both the student and the tutor will experience that as success. Every parent who has heard that a topic is now fine and then seen the mock result knows this effect without having a name for it.

So ask for the strong evidence from the start, and treat the weak kind as a courtesy rather than a report. The table below ranks the four types by what they genuinely establish and how easily each can be produced without any learning having occurred.

FOUR KINDS OF EVIDENCE, RANKED BY WHAT THEY PROVE
EvidenceWhat it showsHow easily it appears without learningWeight to give it
A report that the session went wellThat the explanation was clearVery easily; it is the normal outcome of any competent lessonAlmost none

02

The delayed-recall protocol, and how to run it yourself

  • Log the topic and date whenever a tutor reports it covered
  • Wait three weeks, then test it inside a mixed set with no labels
  • Full marks means leave it; lost method marks mean a procedural fix
  • No method selected means re-teach with spacing, not another explanation
  • A bad delayed result is information and should not be punished

This costs nothing and any parent can administer it, including one who has never studied calculus. It is the single most useful thing in this page.

When a tutor reports that a topic has been covered, write the topic and the date on a sheet. Do nothing for three weeks. Then ask the tutor to set two questions on that topic inside a mixed set, without telling your child which topics are represented, and to mark the result against the published markscheme. The condition that makes it work is the mixing: a question labelled with its topic tests retrieval from a known shelf, and a question in a mixed set tests whether the student can find the shelf at all, which is what a real paper demands.

Interpret the outcome in three bands. Full marks on both means the teaching transferred and the topic can be left alone. Correct method with lost method marks means the mathematics is secure and the mark collection is not, which is a procedural fix of a few weeks. No method selected at all means the topic was followed rather than learnt, and it needs re-teaching with spaced revisiting rather than another explanation.

Run this on rotation across the five Analysis and Approaches SL topics and by the middle of DP2 you have something no report can give you: a map of which topics are durable and which are theatre. Most families discover that one topic they believed was finished is the weakest thing on the list, and that another they worried about has been solid for months. Both discoveries save money.

One caveat worth stating. A delayed attempt that goes badly is information, not a failure of the tutor, and treating it as the latter is how families end up with tutors who only ever report good news. The whole value of the protocol is that it is allowed to produce bad results.

03

The four disguises an Analysis and Approaches SL skill arrives in

Paper questions rarely announce their topic. A calculus mark can arrive inside a question about the volume of a container, the cost of production or the velocity of a particle, and a student who can differentiate on request may not recognise that differentiation is what is being asked for. This is the most common reason a competent Standard Level student sits in the middle of the grade range.

The mechanism is simple. Classroom practice is almost always topic-blocked: a chapter on trigonometry, an exercise set on trigonometry, a test on trigonometry. Blocked practice produces rapid apparent progress and poor transfer, which is a well-established effect and one that an exam-shaped assessment punishes precisely. Interleaved practice feels harder and slower to the student, produces worse homework scores in the short term, and transfers far better.

Which means a tutor doing the comfortable thing — working through the current chapter at the current pace — is producing exactly the kind of practice that will not survive a mixed paper. The useful session structure keeps a quarter of the time for questions from topics covered weeks earlier, deliberately out of order, and that quarter is where the evidence comes from.

The table below sets out the pattern for the five topics: the form a student will recognise, the form that will appear on a paper, and what a failure on the second one tells you. Use it to read a marked script rather than to teach from.

THE SAME SKILL IN TWO FORMS, AND WHAT THE GAP MEANS
SkillThe form students recogniseThe form a paper usesWhat failing the second one means
DifferentiationDifferentiate this expressionFind the rate at which the volume is changingCalculus was practised as a procedure, not as a tool
Trigonometric identitiesProve this identitySimplify an expression inside an integration questionThe identity is memorised but not available when needed
LogarithmsSolve this logarithmic equationFind the time for a quantity to halveExponential context has never been practised alongside the algebra
Function transformationsDescribe the transformation shownSketch the graph from a modified equationTransformations are read from pictures, not from algebra
Normal distributionFind this probabilityJudge whether a stated claim about a batch is reasonableStatistics is being computed rather than interpreted
04

What a properly annotated Standard Level script looks like

  • Marks annotated beside the line, not summarised at the foot of the page
  • The markscheme named by board, paper and series
  • Every loss categorised: method, knowledge, instruction or accuracy
  • Skipped and abandoned questions marked, with the attempt order noted
  • The same categories used on the next script, so the counts are comparable

A marked script is only evidence if the marking is legible to somebody who is not a mathematician. A page of ticks and a total at the bottom is a score, not an analysis, and it cannot support any of the comparisons this page recommends.

Three things have to be visible. First, where each mark was awarded or lost, written next to the line it refers to rather than summarised at the end. Second, which markscheme the marker applied, named specifically enough that you could find it: the board, the paper and the series. Third, the category of each loss, because the category is what determines the fix. A mark lost because the method was never written down needs a habit. A mark lost because an identity was not known needs re-teaching. A mark lost because the question asked for an exact value and received a decimal needs neither, only attention.

The reason to insist on the third item is that it makes the next comparison possible. If the first script shows eleven marks lost to working not written down, then the only question about the second script is whether that number has fallen. That is a conversation a parent can hold with confidence in any subject, and it removes the need to evaluate the mathematics itself.

There is one annotation habit worth asking for explicitly in Standard Level maths: marking the questions the student skipped or abandoned, and in what order they attempted the paper. Timing failures look identical to knowledge failures on a total, and they are a completely different problem. A student who left eight marks of accessible calculus untouched at the end of Paper 2 has a pacing issue, and no amount of calculus teaching will touch it.

05

The exploration as a version history with one author

The mathematical exploration carries a fifth of the Standard Level grade and is assessed against lettered criteria, which makes it the most valuable single artefact in the subject and the most sensitive to how support is given.

The evidence model is a version history. Each draft the student produces is saved with the date it was written, and each set of comments is saved with the date it was returned. Over a term this produces a sequence that shows how the thinking developed, and it does two jobs at once: it tells a parent whether anything is actually happening, and it demonstrates that the work is the candidate's own if a coordinator ever asks.

The boundary is not negotiable and it is easy to state. The student selects the topic, does the mathematics, writes the commentary and types every sentence. The supervisor asks questions and names criteria. Which criterion is this section trying to satisfy. The mathematics is correct but the reflection does not say why this approach was chosen. This notation is inconsistent between pages. Those comments work precisely because the student has to write the improvement, and anything that supplies the improvement instead is malpractice under IB rules with the consequence falling on the candidate.

There is a provider in this market selling completed internal assessments outright. A Dubai family buying one is purchasing a finding against their own child, potentially across the whole Diploma rather than one subject grade, and no price makes that a reasonable trade.

Practically, keep the version history yourself rather than leaving the only copy with a tutor. If the tutor changes mid-process, a dated sequence of drafts means the new supervisor begins from where the work actually is. Published subject guides and criteria are referenced and linked from the official sources rather than redistributed, which is also how you can tell whether a provider treats board material correctly.

06

Three numbers a Dubai school gives you, and what each one is for

Families routinely compare numbers that are not comparable, and in Dubai this happens more than most places because schools report differently and parents compare across schools in the same conversation.

The report grade is a teacher's judgement of current performance against the 1 to 7 scale, usually based on classwork and internal tests, and it moves for reasons that include effort and attendance. The mock grade is a snapshot of performance on one paper on one day, converted using a boundary set the school has chosen, often last year's. The predicted grade is a formal judgement submitted by the school about what the candidate will achieve, and it is the one universities see.

None of them is a measurement of the thing a tutor can change. What a tutor can change is marks collected by question type, and that is a fourth number nobody publishes. This is why the comparison recommended throughout this page is type-level and not grade-level: a student can gain nine marks on calculus questions, which is real and valuable, while the reported grade stays at a 5 because the boundary did not move with them.

The practical consequence is a different question to ask the school. Rather than why is the grade still a 5, ask which components the grade was calculated from and which of them was weakest. A maths department will answer that readily, and the answer tells a tutor where to aim. Grade boundaries are the board's business on results day and nobody can predict them; marks by type are the only variable in a family's control.

A note on what this page deliberately does not state. No IB examination or results date appears anywhere on it, because the IB's own site blocks automated checking and no session date in this project has been confirmed from the IB directly. Dubai schools sit the May session; the dates that actually bind your child are the coordinator's internal deadlines, and those come from the school.

The Dubai cohort effect on a Standard Level maths grade

Dubai is the densest private-school market in the country, and the regulator inspects schools annually on a six-band scale running from the highest rating down to the weakest. Those reports describe a school, and a parent reading one should be careful about what it implies for an individual maths class.

The sector context is worth having. Dubai's private schools served 387,441 students across 227 schools in 2024-25, offering seventeen different curricula, with UK curricula at 37 per cent of enrolment, Indian at 26 per cent, US at 14 per cent and the International Baccalaureate at 7 per cent. Enrolment rose 6 per cent during 2025-26, six new schools opened in that year, and the 2026-27 intake adds seven more, four UK curriculum and three International Baccalaureate, creating 16,846 new places. The regulator also confirmed on 22 May 2026 that there would be no increase in private school fees in the emirate for 2026-27, under Dubai's second economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion within a AED 2.5 billion total.

What all that means for an Analysis and Approaches SL student is competition for pace. In a strong cohort the class moves at the speed the top third can sustain, and a student in the middle accumulates small unfinished topics that never trigger an intervention because nothing is failing. By the exploration, those gaps have compounded. This is the single most common profile among Dubai students who come to tutoring with a report grade of 5 and no obvious problem.

Two timetable realities also shape when evidence can be produced. The mandatory UAE subjects sit alongside the licensed curriculum: federal rules require Arabic language, social studies and Islamic studies regardless of curriculum, and the Dubai regulator's guidance specifies separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, calculates instructional time on a forty-minute lesson unit, and advises at least twenty-five minutes for any mandatory subject lesson. Those lessons occupy the school day that a maths-heavy student might otherwise use for consolidation.

The second is the calendar: mock weeks, school trips and the shortened school day during Ramadan all compress what a student can realistically produce. A delayed-recall attempt scheduled into a mock week is not evidence of anything, so the protocol moves around the school year rather than running regardless of it.

08

How written mathematics gets marked over live video

  • Timed papers on paper, photographed, marked outside the session
  • Teaching on a shared surface, where hesitation is visible
  • The student's own calculator model for technology-paper work
  • No equipment requirement that turns into a purchase
  • Records kept with a stated purpose, copies held by the family

Parents reasonably ask how a subject that lives on paper works on a screen, and the answer is specific enough to be checked.

Working is produced in one of two ways. Either the student writes on paper and photographs the page, which is then annotated on screen during the session, or the student writes directly on a shared surface the tutor can see live. The first is better for timed papers because it preserves normal exam conditions. The second is better for teaching, because the tutor sees the hesitation and the crossing-out rather than only the finished product, which is where a diagnosis actually comes from.

For the full timed papers, the sequence is the one a school would use. The student sits the paper under time, photographs or scans it, and sends it before the session. The marking happens outside the session, because an hour spent watching a tutor mark is an hour not spent teaching. The session then opens with the annotated script on screen and the comparison to the previous attempt already prepared.

On equipment, the honest list is short. A device with a camera, a reliable connection, paper and a pen. A graphics tablet helps a tutor demonstrate but is not needed by the student, and it is worth being sceptical of any requirement that converts into a purchase. Calculator work for the technology paper is done on the student's own model, because the model matters and practising on a different one builds the wrong reflexes.

On the file itself: session notes, marked scripts and the exploration version history are records about a child, and a family should know what is kept, why, and how to have it removed. The UAE's personal data protection law frames that expectation, and the sensible practice is the same regardless: the family holds copies, the purpose is stated, and nothing about a child's school or grades is collected without a reason that can be explained in one sentence.

09

When the evidence says the tutoring is finished

The protocol in this page has an endpoint, and a provider that never mentions it is not using the evidence for your benefit.

The finishing condition is specific: the student passes delayed, unprompted attempts across all five topics, collects method marks reliably on Paper 1, finishes Paper 2 in time, and can mark their own work against a published markscheme and tell you which question types they are weak on. At that point they have the skill the tutoring was bought to install, and the right move is a session a fortnight through the final term and then nothing.

There are also two failure conditions, and both are reasons to change something rather than to buy more hours. The first is six weeks of flat type-level counts on the targets that were set, which means the diagnosis was wrong or the match is wrong. The second is a student producing nothing between sessions, which means the constraint is time and motivation rather than teaching. Neither responds to a longer or more expensive session, and a provider recommending one in those circumstances is selling rather than advising.

On availability, the honest position: Standard Level Analysis and Approaches is the best-covered maths course in this set, so a specialist is usually available within days across most slots. Where it gets tight is the busiest weekday evening hour in term time, and there are weeks when the right specialist is not free in it. The options then are a different time, an adjacent specialist who can start now, or a date. What is not on offer is a generalist described as a Standard Level specialist, because that produces exactly the file of pleasant sessions and flat marks this page exists to prevent.

One last suggestion, free of charge. Before contacting anyone, run the delayed-recall test yourself on one topic your child's school reported as covered a month ago. Whatever the result, you will be able to describe the problem in a sentence that gets you matched to the right person first time.

Where we tutor

Where our Analysis and Approaches SL students are in Dubai

Area matters here mainly through school pacing and through the hour a student is genuinely able to think. The notes below name what is specific to each, rather than repeating a description that would fit anywhere in the city.

Emirates Hills and Dubai Hills Estate

Strong Diploma cohorts with fast-moving maths classes, which produces a particular pattern: students who are not failing anything and are quietly behind on calculus. Marked scripts here usually show method losses rather than content gaps.

Al Barsha and Al Sufouh

A dense cluster of Diploma provision within a short radius, so siblings often attend different schools with different internal deadlines. Two children in one household can need two separate exploration timelines, which is a scheduling problem more than a teaching one.

Arabian Ranches and Motor City

Longer commutes to the western school corridor, with evening sessions pushed later in the week. Weekend mornings are the realistic slot for a full timed paper, and that is where the delayed-recall attempts tend to be scheduled.

Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim

A mix of British-curriculum schools running IGCSE before the Diploma and continuum IB schools. Students arriving from IGCSE are usually strong on bare technique and weak on unstructured questions, which is a specific and fixable transfer problem.

Dubai Creek Harbour and Ras Al Khor

Newer residential stock with students bussed across the city, so the day ends late. Shorter, tightly scoped weekday sessions work better here than long ones, and the marking happens between sessions rather than inside them.

Town Square and Dubai South

Growing Diploma numbers and long school runs. Families here benefit most from the format, because a Standard Level specialist is matched regardless of distance and nothing in the hour pays for a drive across the city.

Al Qusais and Mirdif

Established Indian and British curriculum provision alongside IB schools. A number of students here move into the Diploma from a different system entirely, and their first marked script is as much a test of exam habits as of mathematics.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai

Continuum IB schools running the Diploma

Students from these schools usually reach Analysis and Approaches SL with strong criterion-referenced habits and limited experience of externally marked timed papers. Their first marked script tends to show good mathematics and poor mark collection, which is the quickest thing on this page to fix.

A working session over live video, booked without card details and scheduled around the school day. It produces a marked piece of work with the markscheme named, a count of losses by category, and two target question types written down. That count is the number every later comparison is measured against.

  3. 03

    Agree the interleaving rule

A quarter of every session is spent on questions from topics covered weeks earlier, out of order and unlabelled. It makes homework scores look worse in the short term and transfer better in the long term, so it is worth agreeing explicitly rather than discovering by surprise.

  4. 04

Book the exploration block against the school's date

Get the coordinator's submission deadline and scope the block to it. Each session ends with the student holding a question to answer in writing, and the dated version history records what came back. The block closes when the work is submitted rather than renewing by default.

  5. 05

Review at six weeks on the counts

Two dated marked attempts, compared by loss category and by question type. Three honest outcomes: continue, change the diagnosis or the tutor, or stop because the student now self-marks. Fixing the date before the first paid session is what makes it a decision rather than a progress chat.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Progress tested after a delay, not during the lesson

Any competent tutorial produces a student who can do it now. The evidence that predicts a grade is an unprompted attempt three weeks later inside a mixed set. Building that into the schedule is the difference between a file of pleasant sessions and a file that tells you something.

Interleaved practice even though it looks worse

A quarter of each session on older topics out of order, because blocked practice flatters short-term performance and fails on a mixed paper. Agreeing this up front matters, since the first few weeks of interleaved work produce lower scores than a parent expects.

Every loss categorised so the counts are comparable

Method, knowledge, instruction or accuracy, marked beside the line it refers to, with the markscheme named by board, paper and series. A parent who cannot do the mathematics can still read whether eleven method losses became four.

The exploration kept as a dated version history

The student's own drafts with dates, criterion-referenced comments, and no replacement text at any point. It shows a parent that work is happening and demonstrates sole authorship if a coordinator asks. The family keeps the copies rather than the tutor.

Matched on component rather than proximity

Paper 1 technique, Paper 2 technology use and exploration supervision are three different jobs. Live video means the person matched is the one who does your child's job repeatedly, anywhere in the network, rather than the Standard Level generalist nearest your area of Dubai.

A stated finishing condition

Delayed attempts passing across all five topics, method marks collected reliably, Paper 2 finished in time, and the student able to self-mark. At that point the correct advice is to stop, and a provider unwilling to describe that point is not using the evidence on your behalf.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai: your questions answered

What evidence should we have after a month of AA SL tutoring?+

Two dated marked scripts, the markscheme named on both, a count of losses by category on each, and at least one unprompted attempt at a topic taught three weeks earlier inside a mixed set. If an exploration is live, add the dated draft and the criterion-referenced comments. What should not be the main item is a weekly report saying the sessions are going well, because that is the normal output of any competent lesson and it tells you nothing about retention. The categories matter most: eleven method losses falling to four is a measurement anybody can read.

How are the marks split between the two AA SL papers and the exploration?+

The published Standard Level structure is two written papers carrying the bulk of the grade between them, one sat without a calculator and one with technology permitted, plus the mathematical exploration at a fifth of the total. Check the exact weightings against the current subject guide through your child's coordinator, since the guide is the authoritative document and this page does not reproduce board material. The practical consequence is that a student who ignores the exploration has capped their grade before sitting a paper, and that is a surprisingly common pattern in a busy Diploma year.

Which AA SL paper should the first month of evidence come from?+

The calculator-free paper, almost always. It is where written argument earns the marks, so it exposes the gap between knowing the mathematics and collecting the marks more sharply than the technology paper does. A student who loses marks there while answering correctly has a procedural problem that is fast to fix and highly visible on a second script. Start with the technology paper only if the school report or a mock points specifically at timing or at calculator technique, in which case the pacing evidence matters more than the method evidence.

How do we tell a method-mark problem from a topic my child has not learnt?+

Read the script rather than the total. A method problem looks like correct answers with missing intermediate lines, or a right result with no stated reasoning. A knowledge problem looks like a blank, a false start, or a method borrowed from a different topic. The two need completely different responses: the first is a habit that can change within a few weeks of deliberate practice, the second needs re-teaching followed by spaced revisiting. Ask for every loss to be categorised on the script, because the category is the only thing that tells you which fix applies.

Which parts of the AA SL syllabus show up most often in our marked scripts?+

Calculus and functions dominate the recoverable losses, not because they are the hardest content but because they appear most often in disguise. A rate of change arrives as a volume, a cost or a velocity, and a student who can differentiate on request does not always recognise that differentiation is the request. Trigonometric identities come second, usually needed inside an integration question rather than in a section labelled trigonometry. Statistics losses are typically interpretive: a correct figure with no conclusion in context, which is a writing habit rather than a mathematical gap.

How many marks is the AA SL exploration worth, and against which criteria?+

It carries a fifth of the Standard Level grade and is assessed against lettered criteria covering presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection and the use of mathematics. For exact mark allocations, work from the current subject guide through your child's coordinator rather than from any third-party summary, including this one. What matters for a parent is the shape of the support: criterion-referenced questioning on the student's own work, a dated version history, and a submission date taken from the school's internal calendar rather than from the board's.

What can a tutor legitimately write on an AA SL exploration draft?+

Questions and criterion pointers. Which criterion is this section trying to satisfy. The mathematics is correct but the reflection never says why this approach was chosen. The notation changes between pages three and five. Each of those forces the student to produce the improvement themselves, which is both the rule and the only version that leaves them better at the subject. What a tutor must never do is supply replacement sentences or restructure the work for the candidate. One provider in this market sells completed internal assessments outright, and buying one risks a malpractice finding against the student.

How often should the exploration version history be updated?+

Every time a draft moves in either direction. The student's file gets a date when they write it; the comments get a date when they come back. Over a term that produces four or five pairs, which is enough to show development without becoming a filing exercise. Keep the copies yourself rather than leaving the only set with a tutor, for two reasons: if the supervisor changes, the new one starts from where the work actually is, and if a coordinator ever queries authorship, the dated sequence is the answer rather than an assurance.

Does a higher raw mark always mean a better AA SL grade?+

No, and this is where families most often feel misled. Grade boundaries are set by the board for each series and move with paper difficulty, so a raw mark does not convert permanently into a grade. A student can gain nine marks on calculus questions, which is real and worth having, while the reported grade stays at a 5 because the threshold did not move with them. This is exactly why the comparison recommended here is at question-type level. Nobody can predict boundaries, and anybody converting marks into grades with confidence is guessing.

What is the difference between my child's mock grade and their predicted grade?+

The mock grade is performance on one paper on one day, converted with a boundary set the school chose, often from a previous series. The predicted grade is a formal judgement the school submits about what the candidate will achieve, and it is the number universities see. They are produced by different processes and routinely differ. Neither measures the thing a tutor can change, which is marks collected by question type. The more useful question to ask the school is which components the grade was calculated from and which of them was weakest.

How does a tutor mark written working over video?+

Two ways, used for different purposes. For timed papers the student writes on paper under exam conditions, photographs or scans the script and sends it before the session; marking happens outside the session so the hour is spent teaching rather than watching. For teaching, the student writes on a shared surface the tutor sees live, which matters because the hesitation and the crossing-out are where a diagnosis comes from. The annotated script is then kept on file with the markscheme reference beside each mark, which is more than a visiting tutor usually leaves behind.

Is an IB DP Math AA SL tutor in Dubai available for home visits?+

Not through IB Gram. Tuition across the UAE is delivered one-to-one over live video, and home visits are a service offered only in India. For this subject the format suits the evidence rather than compromising it, because written work moves between sessions and gets annotated on the document. It also widens the choice: instead of the Standard Level generalist nearest your part of Dubai, the match is somebody who works on the calculator-free paper or on exploration supervision repeatedly. Nothing in the hour pays for a drive across the city.

How do KHDA inspection reports help us read our child's maths grade?+

They describe a school, not a class, so use them for context rather than diagnosis. The regulator inspects Dubai private schools annually on a six-band scale, and a strong rating tells you the provision is good; it does not tell you whether your child's maths set is moving at a pace they can sustain. The more informative question for a maths department is which components the current grade was built from. In a strong cohort the commonest profile is a student who fails nothing, triggers no intervention and quietly accumulates unfinished topics.

Will mock weeks and Ramadan interrupt the evidence trail?+

They change its timing, which is why the protocol follows the school calendar rather than ignoring it. A delayed-recall attempt scheduled inside a mock week measures exhaustion rather than retention and should be moved. During Ramadan the shortened school day shifts when a student can concentrate, and sessions move accordingly, often later in the evening. The practical approach is to agree in advance which weeks are for evidence and which are for consolidation, so a gap in the file is a planned gap rather than a silent one.

When has AA SL tutoring done its job?+

When the student passes delayed, unprompted attempts across all five topics, collects method marks reliably on the calculator-free paper, finishes the technology paper inside the time, and can mark their own work against a published markscheme and name their weak question types. At that point the skill the tutoring was bought to install belongs to them, and the right shape is a session a fortnight through the final term and then nothing. A tutoring arrangement with no stated finishing condition was never a plan, and any provider unwilling to name one is not using the evidence on your behalf.

What happens if no AA SL specialist is free in our slot?+

You are told, with options rather than a holding message. Standard Level Analysis and Approaches is the best-covered maths course in this set, so a match is usually available within days across most of the week. The pressure point is the busiest weekday evening hour in term time, where there are weeks when the right person is not free. The alternatives offered are a different time, an adjacent specialist who can start immediately, or a date. A generalist presented as a Standard Level specialist is the outcome this whole approach exists to avoid.

Test one topic before you hire anyone

Pick a topic your child's Dubai school reported as covered about a month ago. Ask for two questions on it inside a mixed set, with no labels, and have the result marked against the published markscheme. Whatever comes back, you will know more about your child's Analysis and Approaches SL position than any report has told you, and you will be able to describe the problem in one sentence. Then book a free trial session over live video and send that script with it. The plan that comes back will name two question types and a review date rather than a number of hours.
