IB and IGCSE tutors for Al Mankhool families

Al Mankhool families ask for IB and IGCSE tutors for one reason: the syllabus gets covered in class, and the rest of it does not. Internal assessments, past-paper practice, the Extended Essay, the topics a crowded Year 11 set moved past in a fortnight. All of that sits with your child. IB Gram matches an Al Mankhool student to a specialist in that exact subject and level, and lessons run one-to-one over live video in the evening, once the Mankhool Road school run has cleared.

  • One-to-one online lessons matched to the board and syllabus code your child sits
  • Evening slots that begin after the Bur Dubai school run, from 16:30 Gulf time
  • IA, Extended Essay and TOK work reviewed as feedback on the student's own draft
  • Market AED rates published on this page with the source named beside each band

IB & IGCSE in Al Mankhool

The part of the course nobody supervises

A Year 11 teacher in Bur Dubai has a specification, a term calendar and twenty-four other students in the room. By June every topic on that specification will have been taught. That is a different claim from saying every student learned it, and the distance between the two is where private tuition earns its money. Parents in Al Mankhool tend to notice that distance in one of three places: a mock paper that comes back well below what the classwork suggested, an internal assessment nobody has started six weeks before the school's own deadline, or a topic the class finished during the fortnight your child was away.

The IB Diploma turns this into a structural problem rather than an occasional one. Six subjects, three at Higher Level, each carrying an internal assessment the student designs and drafts outside lesson time. Above that sit a 4,000-word Extended Essay, a Theory of Knowledge essay of 1,600 words and the TOK exhibition. None of it is homework in the ordinary sense, because there is no exercise to finish by Thursday. It is a project-management task handed to a sixteen-year-old, and the students who come unstuck are rarely the ones who find the content hard. They are the ones who were never shown how to cut a long piece of work into weekly pieces.

IGCSE has its own version of the same gap. Cambridge and Pearson both reward a volume of past-paper practice that no school timetable has room for, and command-term discipline that only shows up under timed conditions. A student can know every definition in Physics 0625 and still lose eight marks on Paper 4 because 'explain' was answered as 'describe'. That failure is diagnosable within one marked paper, which is why a first session with a specialist usually starts with a script rather than a topic list.

Al Mankhool shapes the practical side of this. It is a dense mid-rise district between Kuwait Street, Al Mankhool Road and the BurJuman interchange, and most families here live in apartments rather than villas. There is no spare study room, the school run goes out towards Oud Metha, Al Garhoud or across the creek, and a tutor driving in would be parking in a paid zone. The IB continuum schools these families use sit outside the neighbourhood, which means a 7am departure and a return after 15:30 on most days.

IB Gram works to that reality. Tuition for UAE families is delivered online, one-to-one, over live video, and IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai or anywhere else in the Emirates; the in-home service exists only in India. For a Bur Dubai parent the trade is a good one. Instead of whoever teaches the right subject within a twenty-minute drive of Al Mankhool, your child works with a tutor chosen for the exact paper they sit, in a slot that survives a traffic day on Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Road.

What follows is the honest version. What a school covers and what it leaves to the student, what the assessments actually require, what tuition costs in this market and who charges it, where the academic-honesty line falls, and what happens when no specialist is free in the week you ask.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Bur Dubai families split across three routes at sixteen: IGCSE then A Level, IGCSE then IB Diploma, or an IB continuum from MYP straight into DP. The notes below say what each demands of a student working at home in an Al Mankhool apartment, rather than repeating what the programme is.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma Programme

Six subjects across six groups, three at Higher Level and three at Standard, plus the three core elements. Every subject carries an internal assessment worth roughly a fifth of the grade, and the final score runs to 45 points including up to three bonus points from the Extended Essay and TOK matrix. Higher Level means more content, an extra paper in most subjects and a heavier IA expectation, not simply harder questions on the same material.

An Al Mankhool DP student is usually travelling to a school in Al Garhoud, Al Jaddaf or further out, which removes most of the afternoon. The practical consequence is that IA and Extended Essay work lands late in the evening and at weekends, with no supervisor in the room. That is the single most common reason a Bur Dubai family calls in the first term of DP1 rather than the exam year.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Eight subject groups assessed against four criteria each, marked out of eight and reported as a 1-7 grade per subject. The programme rewards process: investigating, communicating, reflecting. It does not drill algorithms, so a student can hold strong MYP grades and still arrive in DP1 or Year 10 without the procedural fluency that timed papers assume.

The MYP-to-DP step is the one Bur Dubai parents underestimate. A student who scored 6s on criterion-based tasks meets a Mathematics Analysis and Approaches paper with no criteria, no redrafting and a clock. Work in MYP 4 and 5 is best spent on fluency and notation rather than on more projects, because the criteria will not be there in Year 12.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge and Pearson IGCSE

Two years, typically eight or nine subjects, terminal written papers with an alternative-to-practical or practical component in the sciences. Cambridge tiers many subjects into Core and Extended, which caps the grade available; Pearson International GCSE runs a single tier in most subjects with an allowance for modular entry in some. The board decides the paper structure, so the board matters more than the subject name.

Several schools serving Al Mankhool and Oud Metha run Cambridge, others run Pearson, and a few enter different subjects with different boards in the same year group. Check the exam entry slip rather than the prospectus. A tutor prepared on 0580 Extended who meets a student entered for Pearson 4MA1 is teaching the right mathematics against the wrong paper.

A LEVELAges 16-18 · Years 12-13

International A Level

Three or four subjects in depth, examined in a June or November series, usually with no coursework in the sciences beyond a practical endorsement or a written practical paper. It suits a student who already knows which faculty they want, because the narrowing happens at sixteen rather than at eighteen.

Families in Bur Dubai often compare A Level against DP on workload alone. The sharper comparison is the UAE Ministry of Education equivalency route: the British track asks for five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than E or grade 3, plus one A Level at E or two AS Levels at the same grade, with Arabic and Islamic Education excluded from the count of five.

Subject coverage

IB subjects we tutor

Requests from Al Mankhool and the surrounding Bur Dubai blocks cluster around the subjects where the gap between class coverage and independent work is widest: the two mathematics routes, the three sciences and the essay subjects whose internal assessments nobody sees until they are late.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Proof, calculus and algebraic fluency carry the paper. Marks go on unjustified steps, on sloppy notation in differentiation and on the Paper 3 extended investigation at HL, where students stop one inference short of the result. The 20-mark exploration is graded on five criteria, and personal engagement is the one most often left thin.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Statistics, modelling and technology use. The content reads friendlier than Analysis and Approaches and the grade boundaries do not reflect that. Students lose marks by reporting a regression without testing whether the model fits, and by using the graphical calculator without recording what was entered.

Physics

HL and SL

Mechanics and fields reward quick diagram work; thermodynamics and circuits punish vague wording. The scientific investigation is marked out of 24 on four criteria, and the design stage is where most of the difference between a 5 and a 7 is made, long before the data is collected.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Energetics, equilibrium and organic mechanisms account for most lost marks at HL. Students who can name a mechanism often cannot draw the curly arrows in an order an examiner accepts. Data-based questions need unit-by-unit care, and significant figures quietly cost a mark per paper.

Biology

HL and SL

Volume is the problem rather than difficulty. Command terms decide the marks: 'outline' wants a list, 'explain' wants a mechanism with cause and effect. The investigation needs a variable that can be controlled in a school lab, which is where a tutor saves weeks by ruling out an unworkable question early.

Economics

HL and SL

Diagrams are the grammar of the subject. Three commentaries of 800 words each, built on news articles, carry the internal assessment, and the common failure is choosing an article that cannot carry a diagram or a key-concept link. HL adds policy calculation and a quantitative paper.

Business Management

HL and SL

Tools are easy to name and hard to apply. Examiners reward evaluation anchored in the stimulus, not a recited SWOT. The research project at HL needs a real organisation willing to answer questions, which is a logistics problem a tutor should flag in the first week.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

The Paper 1 guided analysis is the fastest grade to move, because students usually write about content rather than technique. The individual oral needs a global issue narrow enough to argue in ten minutes, and a weak choice limits the mark before a word is spoken.

Computer Science

HL and SL

Paper 1 rewards precise pseudocode and a clear grasp of system fundamentals. The solution development for the internal assessment needs a client with a genuine problem and documented consultation, and students who skip the planning record lose marks they cannot recover later.

Psychology

HL and SL

Studies must be used as evidence rather than retold. Essay marks hinge on a critical thinking line that actually engages with method, sampling or ethics. The experimental study report runs to 2,200 words and needs a replication simple enough to run with classmates.

IGCSE coverage

IGCSE subjects we tutor

Year 10 and Year 11 requests from Bur Dubai cluster on a shorter list, and the board matters as much as the subject. The codes below are the ones most often printed on exam entry slips at schools serving Al Mankhool.

Mathematics (Cambridge 0580 / Pearson 4MA1)

Core and Extended, or single tier

Cambridge Extended reaches grade 9 while Core caps at grade C or 5, so the tier decision taken in Year 10 sets a ceiling. Pearson runs Foundation and Higher papers with a different question style. Algebraic manipulation and multi-step problems carry the marks in both.

Physics (Cambridge 0625 / Pearson 4PH1)

Core and Extended, or single tier

Electricity and waves produce the most lost marks. Paper 6 or the practical paper tests method, variable control and graph plotting, and students who have only read practicals rather than run them lose marks on the detail an examiner expects.

Chemistry (Cambridge 0620 / Pearson 4CH1)

Core and Extended, or single tier

Moles, electrolysis and qualitative analysis are where the grade is decided. Many students can balance an equation and still not convert a volume to moles under time pressure. Observation questions need the colour and the state, not one of the two.

Biology (Cambridge 0610 / Pearson 4BI1)

Core and Extended, or single tier

Transport in plants, enzymes and genetics recur every series. Extended-response marks depend on using the stem's own terms, and students lose marks by answering with examples when the question asked for a process.

English as a Second Language and First Language English

0510, 0511 and 0500

The directed-writing task rewards audience and register more than vocabulary. Summary questions are mark-dense and quick to improve: most students write a paraphrase instead of selecting discrete points, and lose half the available marks in ten minutes.

Business Studies and Economics

0450 and 0455

Case-study papers need numbers used in the answer, not quoted beside it. A six-mark evaluation wants a judgement with a reason drawn from the case. These are among the quickest IGCSE subjects to move with four or five marked-script sessions.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes of support cover almost every request from this part of Dubai. All of them run online, one-to-one, over live video, with the tutor and the student sharing a screen and a working document.

Weekly one-to-one, term-long

A fixed slot in the same subject each week, working a term ahead of the school's scheme of work rather than behind it. This is the shape that fixes a structural gap: a student who understands each lesson but cannot assemble a full paper. Most Al Mankhool families start with one subject at one session a week and add a second only if the first is holding.

  • Same tutor, same slot, reviewed at the end of each half-term
  • Written note after each session so a parent can see what was covered
  • Works from the school's own scheme of work and assessment calendar
  • Pause weeks around school exams rather than doubling up

Assessment-cycle block

A short, dense block tied to a mock window or a final series. Six to ten sessions, built around marked scripts and timed papers rather than new content. The first session diagnoses from a real script; the last runs a full paper under exam conditions with the clock visible. This is what families ask for in January and again in March.

  • Diagnostic from a marked mock before any teaching happens
  • Timed sections under exam conditions, marked against the published criteria
  • Command-term drilling on the specific paper your child sits
  • A written list of the three topics worth the remaining revision time

Coursework clinic for IA, EE and TOK

Structured sessions for the self-managed work: choosing a question that can be answered, building a timeline backwards from the school's internal deadline, and reading drafts against the published criteria. The student writes every sentence. The tutor gives feedback in writing on what the criteria reward and what is missing, which is the boundary IB rules set.

  • Question-scoping first, because an unworkable question cannot be rescued later
  • A backwards timeline from the school's internal deadline, not the IB's
  • Feedback against criterion descriptors, recorded so the school can see it
  • No drafting, no editing to completion, no supplied material

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Mankhool

01

What an Al Mankhool parent is really asking for

  • The variable that matters is subject-and-level match, not driving distance
  • Slots are built around the Oud Metha and Al Garhoud school runs
  • Lessons are online; no tutor is sent to an Al Mankhool address
  • First session works from a marked script wherever one exists

The search is for a tutor in Al Mankhool. The need is almost always narrower: one subject, one level, one specific failure that showed up in a report or a mock. Answering the literal question first, lessons for Al Mankhool students run online, one-to-one, over live video, usually in a 17:00 or 18:30 slot, and the tutor is chosen for the paper your child sits rather than for proximity to Kuwait Street.

That substitution is worth examining rather than glossing over. A neighbourhood search assumes the useful variable is distance. For a Year 11 mathematics student it might be, because almost any competent mathematics teacher can help. For a Chemistry HL student three weeks from a scientific investigation deadline it is not. The useful variable is whether the tutor has marked that component, knows what the four criteria reward and can tell in ten minutes whether the proposed research question will survive contact with a school lab.

Bur Dubai is dense enough that a local pool exists. It is not deep enough to guarantee a specialist in Economics HL internal assessments or Computer Science solution development within a short drive of Al Mankhool. Online delivery widens the pool from one neighbourhood to the whole network, which is the entire argument for it. The counter-argument parents raise is attention, and it is a fair one: a teenager on a laptop can drift. The answer is structural rather than rhetorical, and it sits in how the session is run, which the next sections set out.

What this page will not do is pretend the neighbourhood is irrelevant. Where your child goes to school, how long the run takes and what time the house goes quiet all decide whether a tutoring plan survives past week three. Those are local facts, and they are in here.

02

What the school covers, and what your child is left holding

Every private school serving Al Mankhool teaches the full specification. The question is which parts of the course the timetable can supervise and which parts it can only set. The table below splits an IGCSE or DP course into those two columns, because almost every tuition request that reaches us is somewhere in the right-hand one.

Content delivery sits firmly with the school and generally works. A competent department will get through the syllabus, set homework against it and run two assessment points a term. What a timetable cannot do is sit beside one student while they attempt a full past paper under timed conditions, mark it against the published scheme and then talk through each lost mark. There are not enough teacher hours in a week for that across a cohort of ninety.

The self-managed components are where the gap widens into something a parent can see. An internal assessment has no weekly checkpoint. The Extended Essay has a supervisor who may be managing fifteen others. Past-paper practice is recommended rather than scheduled. A student with strong executive function handles all three; a student without one quietly does none of them until the deadline arrives, and the first visible sign is a predicted grade that drops in the spring of DP1.

Reading the table honestly tends to change what a family buys. Parents often arrive asking for help with the whole subject and leave with a six-session block on examination technique and an internal assessment timeline, which is usually what the evidence actually supported.

03

The self-managed assessments, with their actual limits

Parents are often surprised by how much of an IB or IGCSE grade is decided by work produced at home, and by how specific the constraints are. The limits in the table below are the ones students have to design to, and they change what a realistic timeline looks like. A 4,000-word Extended Essay cannot be written in a half-term; a set of three 800-word Economics commentaries can, if the articles are chosen early.

The internal assessment weighting is the figure worth internalising. In most IB Diploma subjects it accounts for roughly twenty per cent of the final subject grade, and in some it is higher. That is a full grade band available on work completed without an examiner in the room, against criteria published in the subject guide. A student who reads the criteria before planning rather than after drafting is working with information the school has already given them and most do not open.

Mark allocations by criterion matter just as much. The mathematics exploration is marked out of twenty across five criteria, with the largest single allocation on use of mathematics and the smallest on personal engagement and reflection. A student who writes beautifully about why they chose the topic and then uses mathematics at the level of the course rather than above it has optimised the wrong criterion. Reading the descriptors backwards from the top band is the single highest-value hour of coursework support available.

Confirm every limit and weighting against the current subject guide your child's school is teaching, because the IB revises guides on a rolling cycle and two cohorts in the same building can sit different versions. A tutor's job here is feedback on the student's own draft against those descriptors, and nothing further.

Where IGCSE marks actually go missing between Year 10 and the final paper

  • Command-term errors are the largest single recoverable loss on most scripts
  • Precision and units cost marks that method marks cannot offset
  • Pacing only improves under a clock, never during untimed homework
  • Core versus Extended entry sets a ceiling months before the paper

IGCSE failure modes are repetitive enough to be diagnosed from one marked paper. The most common is command-term drift: a question asks the student to explain and gets a description, or asks for a calculation and gets a method with no evaluated answer. Examiners mark to a scheme, and a scheme rewards the instruction given. This costs a strong student between four and ten marks per paper, which is often the difference between a 6 and a 7.

The second is unit and significant-figure discipline in the sciences and mathematics. A correct calculation recorded to the wrong precision, or with a unit dropped, loses the accuracy mark while keeping the method mark. Across three science papers that adds up to a grade boundary. It is pure habit and responds quickly to drilling, which makes it the first thing a good tutor fixes.

Third is time allocation. Students who have never run a full paper against a clock spend disproportionate effort on the first long-answer question and arrive at the last two with nine minutes. The marks lost there are not knowledge marks, and no amount of extra content teaching recovers them. One full timed paper, marked and talked through, usually changes a student's pacing permanently.

Fourth, and most consequential, is the Core and Extended tier decision in Cambridge subjects. Core caps the grade at C or 5. A student placed in Core in Year 10 because of a weak start, and never reviewed, carries that ceiling into the final series regardless of how much they improve. Any family in Al Mankhool whose child was tiered early should ask the department directly whether the entry can still be changed, and the deadline for that sits months before the exam.

What tutoring costs in Bur Dubai, with the rates attributed

Most pages in this market refuse to publish a number. Three of the six strongest competing pages carry no price at all, and the two that do quote US dollars, which is not the currency a Dubai family transacts in. The table below gives the market bands in dirhams, with the provider who publishes each figure named beside it, so a parent can check the source rather than take our word for it.

These are market rates, not an IB Gram price list. What they are useful for is calibration. If a tutor in Bur Dubai quotes AED 500 an hour for IGCSE mathematics, that sits at the premium examiner end of the market and the family should ask what justifies it. If a quote comes in at AED 50 an hour for Chemistry HL, that is the university-student band, and it may be fine for content revision and unsuitable for internal assessment design.

Format changes the figure more than subject does. In-home visits carry travel inside the rate, which is why the published in-home bands sit well above the online ones for the same level of tutor. In a district like Al Mankhool, where parking is paid and the approach roads are slow between 16:00 and 19:00, that travel component is being paid for a journey that produces no teaching.

Monthly packages are also published in this market: around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and roughly AED 1,599 to 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home sessions. Bestimate's 2026 estimates for a single weekly hour run AED 240 to 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to 1,200 mid-market and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support. For IB Gram's own arrangement, the trial session and consultation are the honest answer, because the figure depends on subject, level and how many sessions a week.

Online lessons against a home tutor for an Al Mankhool apartment

Home tutoring is a real service in Dubai and parents are right to ask about it. A tutor in the room reads body language, takes a book off the table and holds a distractible thirteen-year-old's attention more easily than a screen does. Anyone who claims otherwise is selling rather than explaining. The question for an Al Mankhool family is what that advantage costs and what it displaces.

The cost is visible in the market bands above: published in-home rates run materially higher than online rates for comparable tutors, and part of the gap is travel. In this district the journey is not trivial. Approach roads around BurJuman and Kuwait Street are slow through the late afternoon, parking is metered, and a tutor crossing from Barsha or Mirdif is pricing in forty minutes each way. That money buys transport.

What it displaces is choice. The pool of tutors willing to drive to Al Mankhool for a 17:00 session is a subset of the pool who teach that subject, and for a narrow requirement, Computer Science solution development, say, or Economics HL commentaries, the subset can be empty. Online delivery removes the geographic filter entirely. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE, so this is the trade we are describing rather than a neutral comparison, and it is better stated plainly than implied.

The attention problem is answered by how the session runs, not by where it happens. A shared document both parties write in, a visible timer on timed sections, screen sharing on the actual paper and a written note to the parent afterwards all do the work that presence in the room was doing. Families who try one trial session usually settle the question themselves within a week.

The academic-honesty line, written out

  • Permitted: teaching content, scoping a question, explaining criteria, feedback in writing
  • Prohibited: supplying text, generating data, editing a draft to a finished state
  • Ask how coursework feedback is recorded before the first session
  • Keep every draft and every piece of feedback until the grade is confirmed

This part of the market has a problem, and a parent in Al Mankhool should know about it before engaging anyone. Operators in this SERP sell finished internal assessments at four-figure dirham prices. Buying one is academic malpractice under IB rules, and the consequence falls on the student: a withdrawn grade, potentially a withdrawn diploma, and a record that follows a university application. No tutor should be anywhere near that boundary, and a tutor who offers to cross it is a liability dressed as a shortcut.

The permitted side of the line is wide and genuinely useful. A tutor can teach the content a project needs. They can discuss whether a research question is answerable with the equipment available. They can explain what each criterion descriptor rewards, read a draft the student wrote and say in writing which descriptor is not yet met. They can help build a timeline backwards from the school's internal deadline and hold the student to it. All of that is teaching, and all of it is recorded.

The prohibited side is narrow and absolute. A tutor does not supply text. They do not restructure a draft so the student copies it back. They do not generate data, analyse it on the student's behalf, or edit prose to a finished state. They do not hand over material from another student's project. Each of those transfers authorship, and authorship is the thing being assessed.

The practical safeguard is documentation. Ask any tutor how they record coursework feedback, and ask to see it. Written feedback against criterion descriptors, kept and shareable with the school, protects the student in the only situation that matters: a question from the coordinator about where the work came from. A verbal-only arrangement leaves nothing to show.

08

KHDA, the mandatory UAE subjects and the permit question

Private schools in Dubai are overseen by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, which u.ae describes as responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate. KHDA publishes inspection outcomes on a six-band scale from Outstanding down to Very Weak. For a parent in Al Mankhool choosing between two schools, the useful reading is not the headline band but the subject-level judgements inside the report, because a school rated Good overall can be Acceptable in secondary mathematics, and that is the band your Year 11 student lives in.

Dubai's private-school market is large. The Dubai Media Office reported 387,441 students across 227 private schools in 2024-25, offering seventeen curricula, with the UK curriculum at 37 per cent of enrolment, Indian at 26, US at 14 and the International Baccalaureate at 7. KHDA confirmed in May 2026 that private-school fees in the emirate would not rise for 2026-27 under Dubai's second economic incentives package. For a family budgeting tuition alongside fees, that is a real and checkable anchor.

Arabic, Islamic Education and social or moral studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum. KHDA's guidelines require separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and state that combined classes for both groups are strictly prohibited because of different curriculum expectations and language of instruction. Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit, and schools are required to ensure teachers of these subjects hold appropriate KHDA approval. Material for these subjects is tightly controlled: using different or additional content without prior permission from the Ministry of Education is prohibited.

On tutors themselves, the position is simple and parents should check it. Private tutoring in the UAE runs on a permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, granted free of charge for two years through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Anyone offering private tutoring without that permit is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule has been published, so any page quoting an amount is guessing. Ask a prospective tutor whether they hold the permit; it costs nothing to obtain and takes two working days through MoHRE's own service.

Starting, and what happens when no specialist is free

  • Send a marked script or report with the first enquiry; it halves the diagnosis
  • Trial session at a Gulf-time slot that fits the Bur Dubai school run
  • Availability on narrow components is disclosed, not papered over
  • Six weeks out, the work is technique and triage, and it still moves a grade

The sequence is short. A parent describes the subject, the level, the board and what prompted the call, ideally with a marked script or a school report attached. A specialist in that exact component is identified. A trial session runs at a time that fits the Al Mankhool school run. After it, the tutor says what they think the problem is and how many sessions it plausibly takes, and the family decides.

The honest part is the availability limit, which no competing page in this market discloses. Some combinations are thin. A Computer Science HL internal assessment, Economics HL commentaries in a specific week, Further Mathematics, Arabic as a first language at DP level: for these, a match can take several days rather than the same evening, and occasionally the right person is not free at the hour a family wants. When that happens we say so and offer the nearest real alternative, which may be a different slot, a different tutor profile or a short wait. What we do not do is put a general science tutor in front of a Chemistry HL investigation and hope.

Timing matters more than families expect. A student starting in October of DP1 is working with the whole internal assessment cycle ahead of them. A student starting in March of DP2 is doing damage limitation on examination technique, which is worth doing and is a smaller job than it needed to be. For IGCSE, the useful start points are the beginning of Year 10, the week after the Year 10 end-of-year exams, and the week the Year 11 mock results land.

Six weeks before a paper is not too late, and it does change what the sessions can achieve. At that distance the work is marked scripts, command terms, pacing and the three highest-yield topics, rather than a reteach of the syllabus. Families who come in at that point and accept the narrower scope generally get more out of it than families who insist on covering everything.

Where we tutor

Bur Dubai, Deira and the blocks either side of the creek

Al Mankhool does not work as an island. Families here use schools, clinics and tuition in a ring of older districts, and the notes below are the operational detail that decides when a lesson can actually start.

Al Mankhool

Mid-rise apartments between Kuwait Street and Al Mankhool Road, with BurJuman at the eastern edge where the Red and Green metro lines meet. Study space is a desk in a shared room for most students, which is why a scheduled online slot works better than open-ended homework time.

Bur Dubai and Al Fahidi

The oldest residential grid in the city, heavily served by abra and metro rather than car for secondary students. Session timing here is set by the school bus, not the parent's commute, and most students are home by 15:45.

Karama

Dense low-rise blocks immediately south, with a large long-settled Indian and Filipino community and schools drawing from both. Requests from Karama skew towards IGCSE mathematics and the sciences in Year 10 and 11.

Oud Metha

The school district for this whole corridor, holding several of the larger private schools plus the Dubai Police Academy roundabout that governs afternoon traffic. A 16:00 start is unrealistic on a weekday; 16:45 holds.

Al Garhoud

Across the creek near the airport, with British and IB schools and a shorter run from Al Mankhool than the map suggests outside peak hours. Families here often need a slot that survives an evening flight-shift parent being absent.

Al Mamzar and Hor Al Anz

Northern end of Deira towards the Sharjah boundary, with a mix of apartment families and schools running Indian and British curricula. Lesson slots after 18:00 are common because the inbound commute lands late.

Al Muteena and Al Qusais

Established Deira districts along the Red Line towards Sharjah, with a strong CBSE and British presence. Students switching from an Indian board into IGCSE in Year 9 or 10 are the typical request from these blocks.

Al Jaddaf and Dubai Healthcare City

The nearest IB continuum option for many Bur Dubai families, reached over Al Garhoud or Floating Bridge. The crossing adds twenty to thirty-five minutes each way in term time, which pushes DP coursework sessions into the late evening.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Al Mankhool

Oud Metha and Al Mankhool

The immediate catchment. These schools run Indian and British curricula, with IGCSE at 16 in the British stream, and they are reachable from Al Mankhool inside twenty minutes outside peak hours. Students we support attend schools in this cluster.

  • The Indian High School, Oud Metha
  • Dubai Gem Private School, Oud Metha
  • GEMS Winchester School, Oud Metha
  • Ambassador School, Al Mankhool
  • Dubai English Speaking School, Oud Metha

Al Garhoud and Dubai Festival City

Across the creek, and the nearest cluster offering the IB Diploma to Bur Dubai families. The run is short off-peak and slow between 07:00 and 08:30, which is why morning coursework sessions rarely work for students here.

  • Deira International School, Dubai Festival City
  • Universal American School, Dubai
  • Al Mawakeb School, Al Garhoud
  • Rashid School for Boys, Al Garhoud

Al Jaddaf and the creek crossing

Where Al Mankhool families go for an IB continuum from the primary years. The commute is the trade-off, and it is the reason online evening tuition suits this group better than anything that adds a second journey to the day.

  • Swiss International Scientific School Dubai, Al Jaddaf
  • Hartland International School, Sobha Hartland
  • North London Collegiate School Dubai
  • GEMS Modern Academy, Nad Al Sheba

Schools are named here as context for the neighbourhood's education market. IB Gram has no affiliation, partnership or endorsement relationship with any of them.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the component, not just the subject

Subject, level, board and the specific thing that went wrong: a mock paper, an internal assessment with no start, a topic missed during an absence. A syllabus code from the exam entry slip is the most useful single detail a parent can send, because it fixes which paper the tutor prepares for.

  2. 02

We match on the paper, then on the clock

A specialist in that subject and level is identified first, and availability is fitted around the Oud Metha and Al Garhoud school runs second. Most Al Mankhool students settle on a 17:00 or 18:30 Gulf-time slot, because anything earlier collides with the inbound afternoon traffic.

  3. 03

Trial session, working from real evidence

The first session runs on a marked script or a piece of the student's own coursework wherever one exists, rather than a general assessment. The tutor is looking for repeated error patterns, not a grade, and the student leaves with one concrete thing to change.

  4. 04

A plan with a session count attached

After the trial the tutor sets out what they think the problem is, what they would do about it and roughly how many sessions it takes. A plan without a number is not a plan. If the honest answer is four sessions rather than a term, that is what gets said.

  5. 05

    Review at each half-term

Progress is checked against the school's own assessment points rather than our impression of it. If the plan is not working, the tutor changes or the scope narrows. Families pause during school exam weeks instead of doubling up, which protects the slot for the term after.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched to the component, not the year group

A tutor is assigned to Chemistry HL internal assessments or Cambridge 0580 Extended, not to 'secondary science' or 'Year 11 maths'. That is the difference between someone who can explain a topic and someone who knows what the mark scheme rewards on the paper your child sits in May.

Rates on this page are sourced

Every dirham figure here is attributed to the provider or research that published it, with the band stated. Three of the strongest competing pages in this market publish no price at all. A parent should be able to check a number rather than trust a claim about it.

The honesty line is written down

Coursework support is teaching, scoping and written feedback on the student's own draft. Operators in this market sell finished internal assessments; that risk lands on the student, not the seller. Our boundary is published so a family can hold us to it.

Availability is disclosed before you pay

Where a component is thinly covered, we say so and give a realistic match time rather than filling the slot with whoever is free. No competing page in this market discloses a coverage limit, which tells you something about how often the limit is hidden.

Scheduling that survives a Bur Dubai afternoon

Slots are set after the inbound run from Oud Metha, Al Garhoud or Al Jaddaf, not at a time that looks tidy on a timetable. Sessions move for a school exam week or an iftar timing shift rather than being lost, which is what keeps a plan alive past week three.

Written record after every session

A short note of what was covered, what the student got wrong and what to practise goes to the parent. For coursework, feedback against criterion descriptors is recorded and can be shown to the school if a coordinator ever asks where the help came from.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Mankhool: your questions answered

What do IB and IGCSE tutors charge for an Al Mankhool family?+

Market rates in Dubai run roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour for a qualified subject tutor working online, and AED 200 to 450 or more for an IB, IGCSE or A Level specialist. Unitors publishes IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200; TutorChase publishes AED 270; Bestimate's 2026 tutoring-cost table puts the specialist band at AED 200 to 450 and above. In-home visits are quoted higher, roughly AED 180 to 500, because travel sits inside the fee. Those are market figures from the providers named, not an IB Gram price list. Our own figure depends on subject, level and weekly frequency, and comes with a trial session first.

My son's school taught the whole syllabus, so why is he still dropping marks?+

Because teaching a specification and rehearsing an examination are different tasks, and a timetable can only do the first properly. Marks on a strong student's script are usually lost to command-term drift, precision and unit errors, and pacing, rather than to missing knowledge. A question that says explain and receives a description gets the description marks only. Those losses are invisible in homework, which is untimed and marked kindly, and they only appear under a clock. One full paper run to time, marked against the published scheme and talked through line by line, usually identifies three repeated habits that account for most of the gap.

How many hours a week outside school does an IB Diploma really need?+

More than most families plan for, and the shape matters more than the total. Six subjects each setting homework, three internal assessments in progress, a 4,000-word Extended Essay and a 1,600-word Theory of Knowledge essay add up to a workload that cannot be absorbed in the hour before bed. The students who cope treat coursework as a weekly commitment of one or two protected hours per component from the start of DP1, rather than a block to be cleared later. The ones who struggle have no weekly deliverable on any of it, which is exactly the thing a scheduled session supplies.

Can a tutor help with my daughter's Internal Assessment without crossing the honesty line?+

Yes, within clear limits. A tutor can teach the content the project needs, discuss whether the research question is answerable with the equipment available, explain what each criterion descriptor rewards, read a draft your daughter wrote and say in writing which descriptor is not yet met, and build a timeline backwards from the school's internal deadline. A tutor cannot supply text, restructure a draft for her to copy back, generate or analyse her data, or edit prose to a finished state. The authorship has to stay hers, because authorship is what the criteria assess. Ask any tutor to record coursework feedback in writing so the school can see it.

Which IB schools do Al Mankhool families usually drive to?+

The IB Diploma options nearest Bur Dubai sit across the creek rather than in the neighbourhood itself. Families from Al Mankhool commonly use schools in Dubai Festival City and Al Garhoud, and for an IB continuum from the primary years, Al Jaddaf and the Sobha Hartland area. Those runs are manageable off-peak and slow between 07:00 and 08:30. The practical effect on tutoring is that the student's afternoon is largely consumed by the return journey, so coursework sessions land at 17:00 or later. Named schools here are neighbourhood context; IB Gram has no affiliation with any of them.

Is there an IB World School inside Al Mankhool itself?+

Al Mankhool and the surrounding Bur Dubai blocks are mainly served by Indian-curriculum and British-curriculum schools, with IGCSE at sixteen in the British stream. The IB Diploma and IB continuum provision that these families use is a short drive away rather than on the doorstep, which is a genuine feature of this part of the city rather than a gap in our coverage. Check the KHDA school listing for current programmes at any specific school, because programmes are added and withdrawn between academic years and a prospectus is not always current on this point.

My child missed two weeks of Year 11 chemistry. Can that still be caught up?+

Usually yes, and it is one of the cleaner tutoring jobs. A fortnight of a Cambridge 0620 or Pearson 4CH1 course is a defined block of content, and a specialist can establish exactly which specification points were covered from the scheme of work, teach them in two or three focused sessions and then test them with past-paper questions on those points only. The risk is not the content itself but the assumption later in the course that it is secure. Electrolysis and moles in particular reappear constantly, so a gap there compounds quietly until a mock exposes it.

Do lessons start after the BurJuman and Oud Metha traffic clears?+

That is how slots are set for this district. The inbound afternoon run along Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Road and around the Oud Metha roundabouts makes a 16:00 start unrealistic on most weekdays, so Al Mankhool students generally settle on 17:00 or 18:30 Gulf time. Because lessons are delivered online over live video, the session begins when the student sits down rather than when a tutor finds parking, which is the practical reason these slots hold through a bad traffic week. Weekend mornings are available and work well for coursework, where a longer block is more useful than an hour.

Does a private tutor working in Al Mankhool need a permit?+

Yes. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by a work permit introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, issued through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation. The permit is granted free of charge for two years, and eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No fine schedule has been published, so treat any page quoting an amount with caution. Ask a tutor directly whether they hold it.

What are the word limits on the IB work my child has to hand in?+

The Extended Essay runs to 4,000 words and the Theory of Knowledge essay to 1,600 words on a prescribed title. A science investigation is limited to around 3,000 words and marked out of 24 across four criteria. The mathematics exploration is a page-length rather than a word-count expectation, commonly around twelve to twenty pages, and is marked out of 20 across five criteria. Economics asks for three commentaries of 800 words each. An MYP personal project report sits between 1,500 and 3,500 words. Confirm each against the current subject guide your school teaches, because the IB revises guides on a rolling cycle.

How does the Extended Essay get supervised if the school supervisor is stretched?+

The school supervisor remains the person who signs the work off and who the IB holds responsible, and that cannot be delegated. What a stretched supervisor often cannot provide is weekly structure, and that is where external support is legitimate and useful. A tutor can help test whether a research question is answerable in 4,000 words, build a backwards timeline from the school's internal deadline, point to what the assessment criteria reward, and give written feedback on a draft the student wrote. The supervisor meetings still happen and still matter. Keep every piece of external feedback in writing so the school can see its scope.

What happens if no tutor covers my child's component in the week I ask?+

We tell you, and we give a realistic match time rather than filling the slot. Some combinations are genuinely thin: Computer Science solution development, Further Mathematics, Arabic as a first language at Diploma level, or a specific internal assessment window where several schools share a deadline. In those cases a match can take several days, and occasionally the right person is not free at the hour you want. The alternatives we offer are a different slot, a different tutor profile, or a short wait. Putting a general science tutor in front of a Chemistry HL investigation would waste your money and the student's time.

Are Arabic and Islamic Education compulsory at an Al Mankhool private school?+

Yes. Arabic, Islamic Education and social or moral studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum. KHDA's guidelines require separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and state that combined classes for both groups are strictly prohibited because of the different curriculum expectations and language of instruction. Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit. For the UAE Ministry of Education equivalency count on the British track, Arabic and Islamic Education are not included among the five required IGCSE or GCSE subjects.

How do we find out whether Cambridge or Pearson sets my child's IGCSE papers?+

Look at the exam entry slip or the statement of entry rather than the school prospectus, because several schools serving Bur Dubai enter different subjects with different boards in the same year group. The code is the giveaway: 0580 and 0625 are Cambridge, 4MA1 and 4PH1 are Pearson. It matters because the papers differ in structure, tiering and question style. Cambridge tiers many subjects into Core and Extended with a grade ceiling on Core; Pearson runs single-tier entry in most subjects. A tutor prepared for the wrong board is teaching correct content against the wrong assessment.

Does my child need five IGCSE subjects for a UAE university place?+

For UAE Ministry of Education equivalency on the British track, the published requirement is five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade of no less than E or grade 3, plus one accredited subject at Advanced Level at no less than E or two accredited Advanced Subsidiary subjects at the same grade. Arabic and Islamic Education are not included among the five. One competing page in this market states six subjects, which does not match the published rule. Verify the current requirement on moe.gov.ae or with the attestation authority before acting on it, and note that equivalency is a ministry process, not something a tutor performs.

Start with the script, not the subject

If there is a marked mock paper, a school report or an internal assessment draft in the house, send it with your first message. It tells a specialist more in five minutes than a conversation about the subject does in half an hour, and it usually narrows the job from a term of general tuition to a handful of targeted sessions. Tell us the subject, the level, the board and the slot that works after the Bur Dubai school run, and we will say honestly whether we have the right person free and what we think the work involves. Lessons are one-to-one and online, and the trial session comes before any commitment.
