IGCSE Online Tutor in Abu Dhabi

An IGCSE online tutor in Abu Dhabi should be able to name the paper your child sits before the first lesson starts. Cambridge 0580 or Edexcel 4MA1. Physics 0625 Extended or 4PH1. First Language English 0500 or English as a Second Language 0511. The code decides the papers, the weightings and where the marks are available, and a tutor working from the wrong one is preparing for questions that will not appear. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

  • Matched on the syllabus code printed on your child's entry
  • Paper structures and weightings explained before the first session
  • Alternative-to-practical papers rehearsed, not skipped

IB & IGCSE in Abu Dhabi

The code on the entry form decides everything else

Abu Dhabi British-curriculum schools choose examination boards by department, not by school. A Year 11 student can be entered for Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry 0620, Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics 4MA1 and Cambridge First Language English 0500 in the same series. Those are three different examinations with three different paper structures, three different mark tariff conventions and three different sets of command words. A tutor who starts work without asking which is which is, in effect, guessing at half the job.

The reason this matters so much at IGCSE is that the marks are unevenly distributed and the distribution is public. In the Cambridge separate sciences, roughly a fifth of the total sits in the practical or alternative-to-practical paper, a component most classrooms rehearse two or three times in two years. In Business Studies and Economics the final evaluation lines of the long questions are the single largest unclaimed block. In Mathematics the method marks inside multi-step questions are worth more than the final answers. None of this is secret, and all of it is actionable within a handful of sessions.

What an online format changes is who can be matched to that work. A geographic search in Khalifa City returns tutors who can teach Mathematics and Biology and almost nobody who can mark Cambridge Additional Mathematics 0606 or Edexcel Further Pure Mathematics 4PM1 to the published scheme. Matching on the code instead of the postcode is the difference between covering a subject and covering the examination. Lessons are delivered one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time; IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE, because in-home visits are a service we offer only in India.

The second thing the format changes is what happens on screen. A past paper is shared, the student writes, and the tutor annotates in the same document. There is no waiting a week for a script to come back. A wrong-length answer is interrupted at the third line and rewritten, which is the specific correction that converts subject knowledge into marks. That is the whole mechanical argument for one-to-one, and it works identically whether the tutor is in the next district or another time zone.

This page is organised by what the papers actually assess. Mathematics first, then the separate sciences, then English, then the pattern of mark loss across the rest of the subject list, then the board comparison, then the federally required subjects that run alongside everything else, then how a session is run from an Abu Dhabi household. If you only read one section, read the one covering your child's weakest subject, and bring the code to the consultation. The questions at the end answer the ones families actually ask the exams officer, and a few they should ask and usually do not.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

IGCSE is tiered, and the tier is part of the specification rather than a classroom setting decision. These are the structures an online tutor has to work inside for an Abu Dhabi student.

COREAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge Core tier

A reduced content specification with its own pair of papers and a capped grade ceiling, typically C on the Cambridge letter scale. Core papers ask shorter questions with lower tariffs, and the technique that pays is accuracy and completeness rather than extended explanation.

In Abu Dhabi schools the Core entry is often used for students who arrived mid-course from another system, which means some Core candidates are capable of Extended work and have never sat an Extended paper. A single marked Extended paper settles the question.

EXTAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge Extended tier

The full specification with access to the top grades. Extended papers carry longer multi-step questions, more marks for method and command words that require explanation and evaluation. Nearly all the online tuition Abu Dhabi families request sits at this tier.

The marginal Extended candidate - entered at the higher tier and working at the bottom of its range - is the most common enquiry in the emirate, and the one where component-level work rather than general revision changes the outcome.

4XX1Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE

A single-tier qualification in most subjects, graded 9 to 1, with Mathematics A offered at Foundation and Higher. Papers are structured differently from Cambridge equivalents and some subjects are available in a modular pattern, which changes when marks are banked.

Several Abu Dhabi schools run Edexcel in one or two departments and Cambridge elsewhere, so a student may face both grade scales in the same results envelope. Sixth forms in the emirate read both, but the conversion is not always applied consistently.

ADDAges 15-16 · Year 11

Additional and Further Pure Mathematics

Cambridge Additional Mathematics 0606 and Edexcel Further Pure Mathematics 4PM1 are taken alongside the main Mathematics entry by students heading for A Level Mathematics or Further Mathematics. Content overlaps the start of an A Level course.

These are the thinnest codes in the Abu Dhabi tutor market by a wide margin. A family searching within a twenty-minute drive will usually find nobody; matching on the code rather than the district is the only route that works.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Each entry below names the specification, what the papers assess and where the marks actually leave the page. This is the list an online tutor should be able to discuss before taking a booking.

Mathematics (Cambridge 0580)

Core and Extended

Assessment splits between a non-calculator paper and a calculator paper at both tiers. Extended marks concentrate in multi-step algebra, trigonometry in three dimensions, and probability with conditional structure. The commonest loss is an unsupported final answer in a four-mark question, which forfeits the method marks the student had already earned.

Mathematics A (Edexcel 4MA1)

Foundation and Higher

Two papers of equal weight, graded 9 to 1. Higher tier questions are often set in longer applied contexts than Cambridge equivalents, so reading and extracting the mathematics is a skill in itself. Vectors, iteration and compound measures are where Abu Dhabi students most commonly stall.

Physics (Cambridge 0625)

Core and Extended

A multiple-choice paper, a theory paper and a practical or alternative-to-practical paper, the last worth around a fifth of the total. Electricity, waves and momentum carry the mark loss; the multiple-choice paper punishes carelessness with units and prefixes more than any other component.

Chemistry (Cambridge 0620)

Core and Extended

Moles calculations, electrolysis products and organic reaction pathways are the three heaviest losses. Students who can recite a definition and cannot apply it to an unfamiliar substance score predictably on recall questions and predictably badly on the applied ones.

Biology (Cambridge 0610)

Core and Extended

Large content, low conceptual difficulty, and marks decided almost entirely by command-word discipline. Transport, homeostasis and inheritance questions are answered descriptively when they ask for explanation, which costs a mark a question across a full paper.

First Language English (Cambridge 0500)

Single tier

Two equally weighted papers: reading, and directed writing with composition. Reading marks are lost on the summary and analysis questions where candidates narrate instead of selecting evidence. Writing marks turn on register and structure far more than on grammar.

English as a Second Language (Cambridge 0510, 0511)

Core and Extended

A separate qualification from First Language English, with reading and writing, listening and speaking components. The entry decision matters more than the tuition: sixth forms read 0500 and 0510 differently, and a misplaced student is capped before the course begins.

Business Studies and Economics (Cambridge 0450, 0455)

Single tier

Case-study and data-response papers where the gap between a middle and a top grade is application to the stimulus. The final evaluation lines of the long questions are the largest block of marks that candidates routinely leave unattempted.

Computer Science (Cambridge 0478)

Single tier

Paper 1 theory and Paper 2 algorithms and problem solving. Students who code fluently in a lesson lose marks writing pseudocode under timed conditions, and trace tables are the highest marks-per-hour gain anywhere in the specification.

Geography and History (Cambridge 0460, 0470)

Single tier

Skills-based papers with case-study requirements. Geography marks hang on using the resource provided rather than general knowledge; History marks hang on source utility and on answering the question asked rather than narrating the period.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways the same specification work is delivered to an Abu Dhabi student, all one-to-one over live video, differing in rhythm rather than in content.

Weekly 60 minutes on one specification

The default. One code, one fixed hour, a marked paper every second or third week. It suits students with a diagnosed component fault and reasonable independent practice between sessions, and it keeps the record comparable because the same paper type recurs.

  • One syllabus code, one fixed weekly slot
  • Annotated script on the same component every two to three weeks
  • Specification points tracked in the board's own wording
  • Tier and entry reviewed in the autumn of Year 11

Fortnightly 90 minutes with a full paper

Better for students who need to sit a complete paper and review it in one sitting, which is most science and Mathematics candidates from districts with long commutes. The longer block allows a timed attempt and a full annotation without splitting across two weeks.

  • A complete paper sat under timed conditions in the session
  • Immediate annotation while the reasoning is still fresh
  • Fewer handovers, so less is lost between sessions
  • Needs sustained concentration; not suited to younger students

A short component block

Four to six sessions aimed at one component only: the alternative-to-practical paper, Paper 2 algorithms, the evaluation lines in a case-study paper. The narrowest and most measurable purchase available, and the one with the clearest end point.

  • One component, named in advance, with a target mark
  • Past questions on that component only, marked to the scheme
  • A defined end rather than an open engagement
  • Cannot substitute for a content gap elsewhere in the course

Mathematics: 0580 against 4MA1, and what each paper rewards

Mathematics is the subject where board and tier choices have the largest mechanical effect on the grade available, and the one where an online tutor can waste the most time working from the wrong assumption. Cambridge 0580 is tiered: Core candidates sit a different pair of papers from Extended candidates and the grade is capped. Edexcel Mathematics A 4MA1 is offered at Foundation and Higher and graded on the 9 to 1 scale. Those are not minor differences in presentation; they change which topics appear at all.

What the papers reward is also different in texture. Cambridge Extended questions tend to be compact and multi-step: a short stem, several marks, and a method that has to be visible. Edexcel Higher questions are more often set in extended applied contexts, so a student has to read a situation, extract the mathematics and then solve it. A student strong at technique and weak at reading will underperform on Edexcel relative to Cambridge, and the reverse is also true.

The marks lost are consistent across both. Unsupported answers in multi-step questions forfeit method marks that were already earned. Premature rounding inside a chain of calculations loses accuracy marks at the end. Bearings, transformations and vector descriptions are marked on precision of language as much as on the diagram. And the non-calculator paper exposes arithmetic fluency that a calculator has been hiding since Year 7, which is why diagnostics are set on it first.

A session on Mathematics should therefore start with the paper, not the topic. The tutor sets a section of the actual paper the student will sit, marks it to the published scheme, and identifies whether the loss is content, method presentation or arithmetic. Those three faults have different fixes and different timescales, and conflating them is the usual reason a term of weekly tuition produces no movement.

The separate sciences, and the fifth of the mark nobody rehearses

Cambridge Physics 0625, Chemistry 0620 and Biology 0610 share a structure that is worth understanding before buying any tuition in them. Candidates sit a multiple-choice paper, a theory paper at their tier, and a practical component: either a practical test or the alternative-to-practical paper. That practical component is worth around a fifth of the total mark, and it is assessed on paper in both forms. It asks the candidate to read a method critically, identify a control variable, criticise a results table, plot accurately and draw a conclusion the data supports.

Almost no school timetable rehearses it properly. Practical lessons in Years 10 and 11 are about doing the experiment, which is a different skill from answering questions about somebody else's experiment under timed conditions. The result is a component carrying twenty per cent of the grade that most candidates meet two or three times before the series. For a tutor it is the highest ratio of available marks to teaching hours anywhere in the IGCSE science specifications.

The multiple-choice paper is the second underestimated component. It is marked without method credit, so a unit error or a prefix slip costs the whole mark, and the questions are designed around precisely those slips. Drilling forty multiple-choice questions with the student explaining each distractor aloud is dull and extremely effective, and it is the sort of work a one-to-one session can sustain and a class of twenty-eight cannot.

The theory paper is where content gaps show, and the gaps are predictable. Electricity and waves in Physics. Moles, electrolysis and organic pathways in Chemistry. Transport, homeostasis and inheritance in Biology. A diagnostic across those topics in the first session will usually locate the problem within twenty minutes, which is why a first lesson spent on introductions is a wasted hour.

English: 0500 against 0510, and the entry that sets a ceiling

The most consequential English decision in an Abu Dhabi school is not how the subject is taught but which code the student is entered for. Cambridge First Language English 0500 and English as a Second Language 0510 or 0511 are separate qualifications with different papers, different ceilings and different value to a sixth form. A student entered for 0510 who reads comfortably at first-language level has a placement problem that no amount of tuition addresses, and it is worth checking in Year 10 rather than discovering in Year 12.

Within 0500, the two papers behave differently under tuition. The reading paper responds quickly: the summary question and the analysis question have specific, teachable techniques, and candidates who narrate rather than select can usually be retrained in four or five sessions. The directed writing and composition paper moves more slowly, because register, structure and control of length are habits built over months rather than techniques applied in an exam.

Edexcel English Language A 4EA1 is structured differently again, with its own anthology and coursework option in some centres. The practical consequence for a tutor is that the texts matter: a student working on an anthology extract needs a tutor who has read it, not a general essay coach. That is one of the clearest cases for matching by specification rather than by subject name.

Across all three codes the same two marks are left on the table. Candidates write answers of the wrong length for the tariff, and they answer the question they expected rather than the one printed. Both faults are correctable in a one-to-one session because they need interrupting mid-sentence, and both are invisible in a class where work is marked a week later.

04

Where the marks go in everything else, in order of size

  • Business and Economics: the evaluation lines of the long questions
  • Computer Science: pseudocode under timed conditions, and trace tables
  • Geography: using the printed resource rather than general knowledge
  • History: source utility, and answering the question asked
  • Accounting: layout and column placement, not the arithmetic

Outside the core subjects the pattern of mark loss is remarkably consistent, and knowing it changes what a family asks a tutor to do. In Business Studies 0450 and Economics 0455 the largest single block of unclaimed marks sits in the final lines of the long questions, where the command word is evaluate or discuss and the candidate has produced two lists and no judgement. Four to six marks a question, several questions a paper, and it is teachable in a handful of sessions because it is a structure rather than a body of knowledge.

In Computer Science 0478 the loss is almost entirely in Paper 2. Students who write working code in a lesson produce pseudocode under timed conditions that would not run, and trace tables - a mechanical, entirely learnable skill - are attempted without method. Both are drillable, and neither gets rehearsed often in a crowded classroom.

In Geography 0460 the marks hang on using the resource printed on the paper rather than on general knowledge of the topic, and in History 0470 on source utility and on answering the question asked rather than narrating the period. Both faults are diagnosable from one marked script. In Accounting 0452 the loss is presentational: a correct figure in the wrong column scores nothing, and candidates practise calculation while losing marks on layout.

The practical point is that these are component-level faults, not subject-level weaknesses. A student is rarely bad at Economics; they are routinely losing the evaluation marks in Economics. Naming the fault at that resolution is what makes a four-session block worth buying, and it is the first thing a tutor should produce from a diagnostic.

05

Cambridge against Pearson Edexcel, and why your child may sit both

Two boards dominate British-curriculum entries in Abu Dhabi, and plenty of students sit papers from both in one series. The differences that matter to a tutor are structural rather than reputational. Cambridge tiers Mathematics and the separate sciences into Core and Extended with different papers; Edexcel offers a single tier in most subjects and Foundation and Higher in Mathematics A. Cambridge grades A* to G; Edexcel International GCSE grades 9 to 1. Cambridge runs June and November series, with Primary and Lower Secondary Checkpoint tests in March, May and October; Pearson offers International GCSE in May/June and November.

The administration differs in a way worth knowing. Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones and states that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for the zone, adding that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong zone timetable. That is a parent-facing risk, not an abstraction: check the zone timetable your child's centre uses rather than a generic one found online.

Entry deadlines sit a long way ahead of the papers on both boards. Cambridge runs a June series and a November series for UAE candidates, and final entries for June close in the spring term, months before the first paper; because every centre is allocated to one of six administrative zones, the version of the timetable that applies to your child comes from the school, and Cambridge warns that it cannot take responsibility for a candidate who misses a paper after the wrong zone timetable was used. Pearson's November 2026 International GCSE timetable runs from late October to 19 November 2026, and Pearson publishes provisional timetables ahead of each series, which is why any date should be checked against the live official timetable rather than a restatement of it.

For tuition purposes the conclusion is simple. Ask for the board and code by subject, in writing, from the exams officer. Then ask the tutor to work from that specification and that board's past papers. A student preparing for Edexcel on Cambridge papers will meet a question style they have never practised in the room where it counts.

How an online session actually runs from an Abu Dhabi household

  • The document on screen is the paper being sat, not a slide deck
  • Wrong-length answers are interrupted and rewritten in the session
  • A closing door and a stylus matter more than extra bandwidth
  • Annotated paper, session note and component record follow each session

The mechanics are worth describing because families imagine something more passive than what happens. A past paper from the student's own board is shared on screen at the start of the session. The student works on it, typing or writing on a tablet, while the tutor watches the working appear. Nothing is screen-shared from a slide deck; the document in view is the paper being sat. That alone changes the session from a lecture into supervised practice.

When an answer goes wrong, the correction happens immediately. A four-mark explanation that opens with a one-line description is interrupted at the third line, the command word is reread, and the answer is rewritten there and then. This is the single mechanical advantage of one-to-one tuition in any format, and the reason a class cannot replicate it: in a group of six the same answer is marked and returned a week later, by which point the habit has been practised five more times.

What the household needs to provide is modest and specific. A surface at the right height, a door that closes, a device with a camera and a stable connection, and either a printed paper or a stylus. Headphones help in an apartment. A second screen is useful but not necessary. Families on Al Reem Island and in central districts usually find that reorganising a corner of a room improves the mark record more than an extra session would.

The written output arrives after the session rather than being promised for later. An annotated paper, a short note naming what was covered and what to practise, and an updated component record carrying the raw mark and the paper reference. Because the work happened in a shared document, producing all three is a by-product rather than an extra task, which is why online engagements tend to leave a better paper trail than visiting ones.

07

What an online tutor cannot do, stated plainly

There are limits worth naming before a family pays for anything. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE, because in-home tutoring is a service we provide only in India. No tutor will arrive at an Abu Dhabi address, and a page that implied otherwise would be selling something we do not have. For a young or very distractible student, the absence of an adult in the room is a real cost rather than a detail, and a parent who needs that supervision should buy it from somebody who sells it.

Bench practical work remains the school's job. A tutor can rehearse the alternative-to-practical paper, which is where the marks are, and can talk a student through a method, but cannot supervise an experiment over video and should not pretend to. Where a Cambridge centre enters candidates for the practical test rather than the written alternative, the school's laboratory time is the preparation and the tutor's contribution is recording, presentation and interpretation.

Nor can a tutor supply board materials. Syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes, grade-boundary tables and subject guides belong to Cambridge, Pearson and the IB, and reproducing or distributing them is copyright infringement. We reference them, cite the official page, and link out. A provider offering a drive full of mark schemes is handing you somebody else's property and a reason to doubt everything else they say.

On internally assessed work the boundary is firm. A tutor teaches the skills the component assesses, explains the published criteria, marks a student's own draft against them and asks questions that make the student revise their own reasoning. Content, prose and finished pieces are not supplied by anyone other than the candidate. Services advertising completed assessed work are selling the student a malpractice risk they will carry alone, and the correct response is to leave the provider rather than negotiate the scope.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Abu Dhabi

Online delivery makes the district irrelevant to tutor supply and relevant to timing. These are the hours that work from each part of the emirate, which is the only geographic question left once the lesson arrives over video.

Al Bateen and Al Khalidiyah

Short school runs and an early finish, so a 16:30 start is realistic and a 90-minute session can be sat in one piece. Useful for subjects where a full paper needs to be completed in a single sitting.

Khalifa City and Al Raha

Long bus runs from island schools mean arrival after 16:00 and a genuine first working hour at 17:30. Fortnightly 90-minute slots often beat weekly 60-minute ones here.

Yas Island and Noya

A young British-curriculum cohort moving through Years 9 and 10 together, which concentrates demand on the same science and Mathematics codes within a narrow window of evenings.

Al Reem Island

Tower households where the practical constraint is a quiet surface and a closed door. Families usually reorganise a room before the second session, and the mark record improves measurably when they do.

Mussafah and Shakhbout City

Larger households and longer drives, so later starts and weekend blocks survive to the summer. Two siblings booked consecutively is the pattern that actually holds.

Saadiyat Island

Heavily scheduled evenings with sport and music. Saturday and Sunday mornings are the slots most often converted to, and concentration in them is noticeably higher.

Al Shamkha and Al Falah

Far enough from the island that visiting tutors decline or charge a premium, and far enough that nobody local covers the scarce codes. The clearest case in the emirate for matching by specification.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Abu Dhabi

Island and western Abu Dhabi

The island's British-curriculum schools enter candidates mainly for Cambridge IGCSE, with individual departments running Pearson Edexcel. Students we support attend schools across this cluster. Because the board varies by department, the subject code rather than the school name is the thing a tutor needs before the first lesson.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the code, not just the subject

The consultation starts with the board and syllabus code for each subject in question, taken from the entry form or the exams officer. With the code we can say who covers it and at which hours. Without it, any match is a guess and any quote is provisional.

  2. 02

A free diagnostic on the real paper

One free trial lesson per student, spent on a section of the actual paper your child will sit, marked to the published scheme. The output is a raw mark, a question-by-question breakdown and a named fault: content, method presentation or technique.

  3. 03

A component plan with a target mark

The tutor names the component to be worked on, the specification points still unsecured in the board's own wording, and a target mark on a named paper type. It is written down before the second session, so progress is checkable by anyone.

  4. 04

Weekly work on the paper itself

Sessions are spent on past questions from your child's board, annotated live. Answers of the wrong length are interrupted and rewritten. Each session produces an annotated document, a short note and an updated component record.

  5. 05

A review at each half term

The component record is read every six or seven weeks and one of three decisions follows: continue, change the component, or stop because the target is met. Where the evidence points at the entry rather than the teaching, we say so.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Specification first

Tutors are matched to Cambridge 0580 or Edexcel 4MA1, to 0625 or 4PH1, not to Mathematics or Physics. The code determines the papers, the tiering and the mark distribution, and working from the wrong one wastes a term.

The practical paper taken seriously

Around a fifth of a Cambridge science mark sits in the practical or alternative-to-practical paper, and most classrooms rehearse it two or three times in two years. It is the highest marks-per-hour component in the qualification and we treat it that way.

Live annotation, not a weekly delay

Work happens in a shared document, so a wrong-length answer is corrected at the third line instead of a week later. That immediate correction is the one thing one-to-one buys that no group format can replicate.

Scarce codes covered or declined honestly

Additional Mathematics 0606, Further Pure 4PM1, Computer Science Paper 2 and Arabic First Language 0508 are thin in this market. We tell you before booking whether we cover yours, rather than placing a generalist against a specialist brief.

Board materials cited, never supplied

Syllabuses, past papers, mark schemes and boundary tables belong to the boards. We reference and link to the official pages and do not distribute them, which is both a copyright matter and a signal about how a provider operates.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

Where is the IGCSE syllabus code printed, and why does it decide the tuition?+

Ask the exams officer or check the entry confirmation; the code is also printed on any past paper the department has issued. Boards are chosen by department, so a single Abu Dhabi school may enter candidates for Cambridge 0620 Chemistry and Edexcel 4MA1 Mathematics in the same series. Get it in writing per subject. It matters because the papers differ in structure, tiering and mark allocation, and a tutor working from the wrong specification prepares for questions that will not appear on the paper.

How much of the Cambridge science grade sits in the practical paper?+

Around a fifth of the total, in either the practical test or the alternative-to-practical paper. Both are assessed on paper: reading a method critically, identifying a control variable, criticising a results table, plotting accurately and drawing a conclusion the data supports. Most school timetables rehearse it two or three times in two years, because practical lessons focus on doing experiments rather than answering questions about somebody else's. It is the highest ratio of available marks to teaching hours in the whole specification.

Can an online tutor prepare my child for the alternative-to-practical paper?+

Yes, and this is one of the components the format handles best. The paper asks candidates to criticise a written method, spot the variable that was not controlled, redraw a badly presented table, plot points accurately and interpret a trend. All of that happens on paper and rehearses perfectly on a shared screen with past questions. Bench technique stays with the school; the paper skills, which are where the marks actually are, are what a tutor drills.

What is the difference between Cambridge Core and Extended tier?+

They are different papers from a different amount of content, and the grade available differs. Core covers a reduced specification with shorter, lower-tariff questions and caps the grade, typically around C on the letter scale. Extended covers the full content with longer multi-step questions, more method marks and command words demanding explanation and evaluation. The decision is usually made in Year 10 and reviewed once against mock performance, and a marked Extended paper is the evidence a school can act on.

Does my child lose anything by sitting Edexcel instead of Cambridge?+

No. Both are recognised qualifications and sixth forms in Abu Dhabi read both. The practical differences are structural: Edexcel is single tier in most subjects and graded 9 to 1, Cambridge tiers maths and the sciences and grades A* to G, and the question styles differ. Edexcel Higher Mathematics tends to set longer applied contexts, Cambridge Extended tends to set compact multi-step stems. A student should practise on the board they will sit, which is the whole reason to confirm the code.

Where do most students lose marks in IGCSE Business Studies and Economics?+

In the final lines of the long questions, where the command word is evaluate or discuss. Candidates produce two lists of points and stop without a supported judgement that refers back to the stimulus, leaving four to six marks on several questions in the same paper. It is a structure rather than a body of knowledge, which means it responds to a short block of targeted sessions. A diagnostic script usually shows the pattern within one paper.

Why is Paper 2 the problem in Cambridge Computer Science 0478?+

Because writing algorithms under timed conditions is a different skill from coding in a lesson. Students who build working programmes on a computer produce pseudocode on paper that would not run, miss initialisation, and attempt trace tables without a method. Trace tables in particular are mechanical and entirely learnable, and they are among the highest marks-per-hour gains in the specification. Both faults need interrupting and redoing in the moment, which is what a one-to-one session can sustain.

Is First Language English or English as a Second Language the right entry?+

It depends on the student, and the decision deserves checking rather than inheriting. Cambridge 0500 First Language English and 0510 or 0511 English as a Second Language are separate qualifications with different papers and different ceilings, and sixth forms read them differently. A student reading comfortably at first-language level who is entered for 0510 is capped before the course starts. Raise it with the school in Year 10, when the entry can still be changed without disruption.

How long does it take to fix a command-word problem?+

Usually four to six sessions, which makes it the cheapest substantial gain available at IGCSE. The fault is that candidates describe when the paper says explain, and stop before the judgement when it says evaluate. The fix is mechanical: read the tariff, decide the shape of the answer, then write. It needs interrupting mid-sentence and rewriting repeatedly, so it responds to one-to-one work and barely moves in a group where scripts come back a week later.

What should the first online session with an IGCSE tutor contain?+

A real past paper from your child's own board, or two sections of one, sat under something close to timed conditions and marked against the published scheme. The output should be a raw mark, a question-by-question breakdown and a named fault: content gap, method presentation or exam technique. A first session spent on introductions and learning styles has told you nothing you can act on, and it is an hour you cannot get back in an exam year.

Can a tutor send us past papers and mark schemes?+

No, and a provider who offers a folder of them is distributing somebody else's property. Syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes, grade-boundary tables and subject guides belong to Cambridge, Pearson and the IB. We reference them and link to the official pages, and we work from material your child's school has legitimately issued. Reproducing board material is copyright infringement, and for unreleased papers it is a malpractice exposure for the candidate as well.

Why does Cambridge publish six different exam timetables?+

Because every centre is allocated to one of six administrative zones, and the timetable differs by zone. Cambridge states that it is essential to use the correct version for your zone, and that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong zone timetable. For a parent this means checking the timetable your child's own centre uses rather than a generic one found online, and treating any date restated on a third-party site as unverified.

Which IGCSE subjects are hardest to find a tutor for in Abu Dhabi?+

Cambridge Additional Mathematics 0606, Edexcel Further Pure Mathematics 4PM1, Computer Science Paper 2 and Arabic First Language 0508, in roughly that order. A search within a twenty-minute drive of most districts returns nobody who can mark those papers to the published scheme. This is the clearest practical argument for matching by specification rather than by location, and it is also why we state coverage before a booking rather than after one.

What does my child need at home for an online IGCSE lesson?+

A surface at the right height, a door that closes, a device with a working camera and a stable connection, and either a printed paper or a stylus for a tablet. Headphones help in an apartment. A second screen is useful rather than necessary. Families in tower districts often find that reorganising a corner of a room improves the mark record more than an additional session would, which is worth trying before buying more hours.

Bring the code and we will tell you the truth about coverage

The useful first message about an IGCSE online tutor in Abu Dhabi is short: the subject, the board, the syllabus code, the tier and the last raw mark. With those five facts we can say who covers that specification, which hours they have for a student on Gulf Standard Time, and what the first diagnostic will look at. If the code is one we cannot cover at the hour you need, we will say so rather than offering a generalist against a specialist brief. The trial lesson is free, one per student, and is spent on a section of the real paper, so you finish the first hour holding a marked diagnostic rather than an impression.
