IGCSE Tutor near me in Abu Dhabi

Searching for an IGCSE tutor near me in Abu Dhabi is really two questions: who can teach the specification my child is entered for, and what time can a session start. Only the second has anything to do with distance. This page works through both with a clock and a map, then shows what the first four marked scripts should tell you, because proximity is easy to verify and teaching quality is not.

  • Matched on syllabus code and tier, then on the hour that suits you
  • Marked scripts and dated session notes from the first week
  • Coverage and match time stated before a booking is taken
  • Permit status you can ask to see and verify yourself

Two questions hiding inside one search

Typing igcse tutor near me is shorthand for something more specific, and it is worth separating the parts. The first part is competence: can this person teach Cambridge 0620 Extended, or Pearson 4MA1 Higher, well enough to move marks. The second is logistics: can a session happen on a Tuesday at half past four without the family rearranging the evening. Distance is relevant to the second question only, and even then it is a proxy for time rather than for kilometres.

The reason this matters in Abu Dhabi is that the two questions pull in opposite directions. The pool of people who can reach Al Reef before seven in the evening is small. The pool of people who can teach Chemistry 0620 Extended to a student aiming at the top of the scale is also small. Intersect those two sets and you are often left with nobody, which is how families end up paying specialist rates for a generalist who happens to live nearby.

Private schools in the emirate are licensed and inspected by ADEK, the Department of Education and Knowledge, and the school map is spread across three broad bands: the island schools around Al Bateen, Al Khalidiyah and Al Mushrif; the Khalifa City, Al Raha and Yas Island corridor; and the newer mainland communities out towards Al Shamkha, Al Falah and Mussafah. A household in each of those bands has a materially different evening, and the clock table further down this page sets out what that means in practice.

Our own position is simple and stated up front. Lessons are one-to-one over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram sends nobody to a UAE address; visiting tuition exists in our India operation only. So the honest version of near me here is not a shorter drive, it is a tutor who is available at your hour and matched to your specification, with the evidence of their work arriving in writing every week.

Everything below is built around things you can check. What time a session can realistically begin from each part of the emirate. How common your child's subject and tier actually are, and what happens when nobody suitable is free. What the first four marked scripts should contain and in what order to read them. What a session note has to say to be worth keeping. The arithmetic of a drive, in dirhams per teaching minute. And how to verify, yourself, that the person teaching your child is permitted to do so. None of that requires you to judge teaching you cannot see. Each item is a document, a timetable fact or a number you can put beside a competing quote, which is the only basis on which a stranger's hour is worth buying at a specialist rate.

At a glance

  • Earliest realistic session start, by corridor, for visiting and live formats
  • Subject and tier availability stated plainly, including what is thin
  • The first four marked scripts, and the order to read them in
  • A drive costed in dirhams per teaching minute, not per hour
  • Four steps to verify a private tuition permit before you pay anyone
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Matching on specification means knowing three things before anybody is proposed: the board, the tier and the series. The blocks below set out what each of those changes about who is a suitable tutor, which is the part a postcode search cannot answer.

CIEAges 14-16 Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE, by code

A tutor for Cambridge needs the specification rather than the subject: 0580 Mathematics, 0607 International Mathematics, 0625 Physics, 0620 Chemistry, 0610 Biology, 0653 Combined Science, 0654 Co-ordinated Sciences, 0500 First Language English, 0510 English as a Second Language. Tiering is Core and Extended, and the tier changes which past papers are the right practice set.

Cambridge runs IGCSE in a June and a November series, and allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones, stating that using the correct zone timetable is essential and that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong version. Confirm the zone with your Abu Dhabi school's exams officer before building a schedule.

PEARSONAges 14-16 Years 10-11

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE, by code

Pearson codes begin with 4: Mathematics A is 4MA1, Physics 4PH1, Chemistry 4CH1, Biology 4BI1, English Language A 4EA1. Tiering is Foundation and Higher. A tutor who has taught only Cambridge will recognise the content and misjudge the question style, the mark distribution across papers and the balance of short to extended responses.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE exams are available in May/June and November, with the November 2026 final timetable running from late October to 19 November 2026. June 2026 results reached centres on 19 August and students on 20 August. Provisional timetables are published ahead of each series, so plan against the live official document.

TIERAges 14-16 Years 10-11

Tier, and why it narrows the tutor pool

The higher tier of a minority subject is where availability becomes genuinely thin, because the number of people who teach it well in any one city is small. A tutor comfortable with Core content may be out of their depth on Extended material, and the gap is invisible for several weeks because the early topics overlap.

Tier entries are fixed at the entry deadline, not on the day of the exam, and in the UAE that deadline belongs to a June or a November series - Cambridge offers the February/March series to India only, so there is no third window to fall back on. A June candidate has entries closed in the spring, months before the first paper; a November candidate has them closed over the summer, and Pearson's November 2026 papers then ran from late October to 19 November 2026. Working backwards from either, the tier question, and therefore the question of who is a suitable tutor, needs settling a full term earlier with marked evidence in hand. The centre's examinations officer holds the exact closing date for your series.

RESITAges 15-18 Years 11-13

Resits and private candidates

Students resitting one or two subjects, or sitting as private candidates, need a tutor who knows the entry mechanics as well as the content. The content has usually been taught before, so the work is paper practice with forensic marking rather than a second pass through the specification.

A private candidate has to be entered through a centre that accepts external candidates, and the entry deadlines are the board's rather than the school's. Confirm both the accepting centre and its deadline early, because the availability of centre places in the emirate is the binding constraint more often than tutor availability is.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the IGCSE subjects Abu Dhabi households ask for most, with a note on what a tutor needs to demonstrate before taking the booking. Specification knowledge is checkable in one conversation; it does not need a trial term to establish.

Mathematics (Cambridge 0580 / Pearson 4MA1)

Core and Extended, Foundation and Higher

Ask which tier they usually teach and how the papers differ between the two boards. A tutor who answers precisely has taught both; one who talks about IGCSE maths generally has taught one and assumed the other is close enough, which produces the wrong practice set.

Physics (Cambridge 0625 / Pearson 4PH1)

Core and Extended, Foundation and Higher

The useful test is the practical paper. Ask what an alternative-to-practical question actually assesses. A specialist will name scale reading, control variables and method description precisely, because those marks are predictable and rarely rehearsed at home.

Chemistry (Cambridge 0620 / Pearson 4CH1)

Core and Extended, Foundation and Higher

One of the thinner pools at the higher tier in this market. Ask how they teach the two steps of a moles calculation separately, and how they structure an extended response on electrolysis, since those two things account for a large share of recoverable marks.

Biology (Cambridge 0610 / Pearson 4BI1)

Core and Extended, Foundation and Higher

The breadth of recall makes a topic-confidence audit the right first session. Ask how they decide what to cover first, because a tutor who answers with the textbook order has not planned around which specification points carry the most marks.

First Language English (Cambridge 0500)

Extended only

Ask how they mark a reading answer, specifically how selection and inference are credited against retelling. English is the subject where reassuring feedback most often substitutes for marking against the published scheme, so a sample annotated answer is worth requesting.

English as a Second Language (Cambridge 0510 / 0511)

Core and Extended

The summary and note-making tasks are formula-driven and respond quickly, so a competent tutor should be able to describe the formula in a sentence. Also ask whether the route choice between first and second language English has been settled with the school.

Economics and Business Studies (Cambridge 0455 / 0450)

Core and Extended

Ask what earns an evaluation mark. The answer should mention a judgement with a stated condition attached, not a balanced discussion. Tutors who describe these subjects as essay writing tend not to be marking against the band descriptors.

Geography and History (Cambridge 0460 / 0470)

Core and Extended

Both reward specific named detail, so ask how case studies and sources are built into weekly work. A tutor who produces one case-study card per topic leaves the student with a usable revision set, which is worth more than an hour of discussion.

Computer Science and ICT (Cambridge 0478 / 0417)

Core and Extended

Ask them to complete a trace table in the format the mark scheme expects. It takes two minutes and it separates tutors who have taught the examined course from programmers who know the material but not the paper.

Arabic as a First or Foreign Language (Cambridge 0508 / 0544)

First Language and Foreign Language routes

Confirm which route the school has entered, because the two assess very different things. A tutor comfortable with the foreign-language route is not automatically suitable for first language, and the mismatch is usually discovered late.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways a match is used once it is made. All three are one-to-one over live video, and all three produce marked scripts and dated notes, because those are the documents that let you judge a tutor you did not pick on proximity.

Fixed weekly slot, one subject

The same hour each week on one subject and one specification, held in Gulf Standard Time. The hour opens with last week's marked work, isolates one thing, and sets the next task. Because the slot is fixed rather than negotiated weekly, the record is comparable session to session, which is what makes a month of work readable.

  • Same hour weekly, agreed before the first session
  • One specification code per slot
  • Marked work reviewed at the start, not the end
  • A dated note naming the paper and component

Two short sessions a week

Thirty to forty minutes twice a week instead of one hour, which suits households on the mainland where a long weekday evening slot does not exist. Shorter contacts closer together consolidate better than one long block, and they fit between the school run and a late dinner without anybody being exhausted.

  • Two shorter contacts instead of one long one
  • Useful where the school run ends late
  • Same notes and marking as a full session
  • Easier to sustain across a nine-subject term

Weekend paper session

A longer weekend slot built around sitting a full paper under real timing, then marking it together. Households in Al Shamkha, Al Reef and Mussafah often use this as the main session with a short midweek follow-up, because a weekend morning is the only window in which a full paper is realistic.

  • A full paper under genuine timing
  • Marked against the published scheme afterwards
  • Timing audited question by question
  • Short midweek follow-up on what the paper showed

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Abu Dhabi

01

The proximity question, answered with a map and a clock

Distance only matters because of what it does to the clock. A tutor twelve kilometres away is not worse than one two kilometres away; a session that cannot begin until a quarter past seven is worse than one that begins at half past four, because the student is a different person at those two times. So the useful way to think about near me is to ask what hour is reachable, and then ask who is good, rather than the other way round.

Run the arithmetic on your own evening before comparing any tutors. What time does the student actually walk through the door? How long before they are fed and able to sit down? What else is already in that evening, including Arabic or Islamic Education homework, sport and the other eight subjects? For most island households the answer is a workable slot from about half past four. For most mainland households on a school night it is closer to half past six, and for a visiting tutor it is later again once the drive is added at both ends.

The second half of the calculation is what proximity costs in choice. Abu Dhabi has a real tutoring market, but the subset of it that can be physically present in Al Reef on a Tuesday at six is narrow, and the subset of that subset which teaches Chemistry 0620 Extended confidently is narrower still. Families who insist on both usually end up compromising on the part they cannot see, which is teaching quality.

Removing the drive from the equation does not make a tutor good. It just stops geography making the decision for you. That is why the rest of this page is about the evidence a tutor produces in the first month, since once proximity is no longer the filter, something else has to be, and the only honest candidate is the marked work.

02

Corridor arithmetic: what time a session can actually start

The table below is the version of this conversation we have with families several times a week. It is not a traffic report; it is a planning tool. The numbers are the realistic earliest start for a weekday session, and the difference between the two right-hand columns is the drive that a visiting arrangement has to absorb somewhere, either in the rate or in the student's concentration.

Two things to notice. First, the live-video column is roughly the same everywhere, because what sets it is when the student gets home rather than when a tutor can arrive. Second, the gap between the columns widens the further out you live, which means the cost of insisting on physical presence is unevenly distributed across the emirate. A family in Al Mushrif pays very little for it. A family in Al Shamkha pays an hour of their child's best concentration.

The practical response for outer communities is to invert the week. Put the demanding work, particularly a full paper under timing, on a weekend morning when there is a genuine two-hour window, and keep weekday contacts short and mechanical. Two thirty-minute sessions on a school night often achieve more than one tired hour, and they survive a term better.

Ramadan shifts all of this, and planning for it in advance is easier than improvising. Session times commonly move later in the evening, after Iftar, and concentration patterns change for most students. A plan that spans Ramadan should put the timed papers either side of it and keep the intervening weeks light and consistent rather than ambitious.

Why the nearest tutor is rarely the right specification

Availability is not uniform across subjects, and no provider in this market publishes where it thins out. We do, because the alternative is taking a booking and then finding somebody approximately suitable, which is how a household discovers in February that their Chemistry tutor is a biologist who did chemistry at school.

The pattern is consistent. Mathematics and the common sciences at the lower tier are well covered almost everywhere. Higher-tier minority subjects, second-language English at the Extended route, Computer Science and the first-language Arabic route are where the pool is genuinely thin in any one city, and insisting on a local match in those cases means choosing from a list of one or two.

What should happen when nobody suitable is free is a stated position rather than silence. Ours is to say how long a match is likely to take, whether the session would need to sit at a different hour, and whether a nearby alternative serves, such as supporting the examined components with a specialist in the adjacent discipline while the right person becomes available. Sometimes the honest answer is that we cannot help with that combination at present.

There is a question worth asking any provider here, and the answer is diagnostic. Ask what happens if the tutor they propose turns out to be wrong for your child in week three. A provider with real depth will describe a replacement process with the records handed over. A provider without it will reassure you that the match will be right, which is not a process.

The first four marked scripts, read in order

Once proximity has stopped being the filter, the marked work is what you judge a tutor on, and four scripts across the first month is enough to form a view. Read them in a deliberate order, because the questions they answer build on each other.

The first script answers whether the tutor marks against the published scheme or against their own sense of the subject. Look for marks allocated per point, annotations naming the command word or the missing step, and a total that could be defended to an examiner. A script covered in encouraging comments and no mark allocation tells you the marking is impressionistic.

The second answers whether the diagnosis is specific. Lost marks should be attributed to a cause rather than a topic: method known but executed carelessly, structure missing on the extended response, content never learned, time run out. Four causes, counted. A diagnosis that says revise electrolysis is a topic label; one that says the chemistry is sound and the answer has no structure the scheme can credit is a plan.

The third and fourth answer the only question that matters, which is whether anything moved. The same question type, sat a fortnight apart, with the earlier losses marked. If the second attempt gains marks on precisely the thing the first attempt lost them on, the teaching is working. If the second attempt is a different question type entirely, nobody can tell, and that is worth raising before another month passes.

05

A session note worth keeping, and three that are not

A session note takes two minutes to write and makes a term auditable. Most providers either do not produce one or produce something that cannot be used, and since the note is the only record of what happened in a room you were not in, it is reasonable to be particular about it.

A useful note names four things. The paper and component worked on, with the syllabus code. What specifically was addressed, at the level of the question type rather than the topic. What the student did unaided by the end of the hour. And the one named task set before the next session. Four lines. A parent can read thirty of these in ten minutes and see the shape of a term.

Three notes that are not worth keeping. The first says good progress on algebra today, which names neither the paper nor the component and could describe any hour of any week. The second lists topics covered, which records delivery rather than learning and will look identical in October and in March. The third is a long narrative about the student's attitude, which is occasionally useful and never a substitute for a record of what was taught.

There is a reason to insist beyond tidiness. When a tutor changes, or when you need to take evidence to a head of department, the notes are what travels. A household with thirty readable notes can hand over a term of work in an email. A household without them is starting again, and paying for the restart.

06

What ten minutes of drive costs, per teaching minute

Visiting rates in this market sit above online rates for the same teacher, and the gap is the drive. Published figures put in-home one-to-one at roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour with travel inside the rate, against roughly AED 150 to 300 for a qualified subject tutor working online, on what other providers publish. Bestimate's 2026 table shows 180 to 350 for in-home work and independent home tutors are quoted at 200 to 500.

Those figures are per hour, which conceals the thing that actually varies. Convert to dirhams per teaching minute and the arithmetic changes shape, because a visiting hour routinely contains fewer teaching minutes than it looks: arrival, settling, a parent conversation at the door, and an early finish because the tutor has another household to reach. None of that is dishonest. It is simply what a drive does to an hour.

The table runs the comparison on a single assumed rate so the structure is visible rather than the price. Use your own quoted figures in the same frame and the question answers itself: which arrangement delivers the most teaching minutes for the money, and who is absorbing the travel. In every visiting arrangement somebody pays for the drive, and it is either the household in dirhams or the tutor in unpaid time, which eventually becomes the household's problem anyway.

One further note on monthly packages, because they are where comparisons break. Figures seen in this market include AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour visiting sessions. Those are not the same purchase: eight contacts with eight sets of notes against four longer contacts with a travel component inside the price. Compare contacts and teaching minutes, not monthly totals.

Checking the permit yourself, in four steps

Private tutoring in the UAE runs on a permit, and a parent can check the position in a single conversation. The permit exists because individual tutoring is regulated activity: the MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, and MoHRE's own service is Issuance of a New Work Permit, Private Tutor Licensing, applied for through its app, website and e-services system with a two-working-day completion time.

Four steps. Ask whether the person holds the private tuition work permit. Ask which eligibility category they hold it under, since the permit is open to teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Ask to see it, because a document that exists can be shown. And check the fee claim: the permit is granted at no charge for two years, so anybody describing a fee they paid for it is describing something else.

Two things not to accept. Do not accept a claim of regulator approval. No tutoring individual or platform holds KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, Ministry of Education, IB or Cambridge accreditation by virtue of tutoring, and a KHDA Educational Services Permit is a specific thing issued to training institutes with premises. IB Gram holds none of those and claims none. And do not accept a quoted fine figure for tutoring without a permit: individuals operating without one are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, but no fine schedule is published, so any specific amount you are quoted is invented.

There is a related arrangement to avoid entirely. Press reporting indicates that ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff prohibit paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, and that the permit's code of conduct bars serving students affiliated with the tutor's own school. Treat the detail as press-reported and confirm the current ADEK document before quoting it, but do not build a plan around your child's own teacher.

Where proximity genuinely wins

A page that argued physical presence never helps would be selling rather than explaining. There are situations where a tutor in the room is better, and they are worth naming so the comparison is honest rather than convenient.

Younger children are the clearest case. A nine-year-old who needs an adult to keep them at the table for forty minutes is not well served by a screen, whatever the subject. Practical laboratory technique is another: a student who needs to handle apparatus benefits from somebody beside them, although at IGCSE the assessed practical skills are often examined through a written paper rather than a performance. And a household with genuinely poor connectivity has a real problem that no amount of argument fixes.

There are also legitimate preferences. A student who has had a bad experience with screen learning, or a parent who wants to see the session happening in their own home, is not making an error. These are reasonable positions and the right response is to say what the visiting market charges, which is roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour with travel inside the rate, and let the household choose.

What proximity does not deliver is specification match, and that is the trade this page is actually about. IB Gram does not run visiting tuition in the UAE; it is an India-only service, so we have no stake in talking you out of a local tutor. If a nearby specialist teaching exactly your child's code is available at an hour that works, that is a good outcome. The point is to check all three of those things rather than just the first.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Abu Dhabi

The map below is about time rather than distance. What matters for a weekday session is when the student is home, fed and able to concentrate, and that varies by an hour and a half across the emirate even though the syllabus does not vary at all.

Al Bateen, Al Khalidiyah and Al Zahiyah

Short school runs and the densest concentration of British-curriculum schools, so local tutor supply is at its best here for common subjects. A session can often start by half past four, which is the single biggest advantage any household can have.

Al Mushrif, Al Karamah and Al Nahyan

Villa addresses within the island's school belt. Households here frequently run two or three children at different stages, so staggered fixed slots matter more than a single flexible one that becomes whoever is available.

Al Rawdah and Al Maryah Island

Central addresses close to several schools but with parking and lift delays that eat into a visiting hour. A live session loses none of that time, which is worth more than it sounds across a thirty-session year.

Khalifa City and Al Raha Gardens

The corridor between the island and the inland communities, with internal distances that surprise newcomers. A visiting tutor crossing from the island adds a real drive each way, so comparisons here are usually made on cost per teaching minute.

Saadiyat Island and Yas Island

Distinct catchments with high rates of mid-course transfer. New arrivals usually need a specification audit before anybody is matched, because the subject names carry across systems and the papers do not.

Al Reem Island

High-rise living where study space is often shared and evenings are noisy. Headphones, a defined sixty minutes and a timer on screen do more here than any change of tutor, and a visiting hour loses minutes at the lift.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City and Mussafah

Long drives to the island cluster, which pushes the earliest realistic visiting start past seven on a school night. Weekend morning sessions are common and usually more productive than a tired weekday hour.

Al Shamkha, Al Falah and Al Reef

Outer communities with large school cohorts. The practical consequence of distance here is that the local tutor pool for a higher-tier minority subject is often empty, so matching on specification means matching beyond the neighbourhood.

The island school belt: Al Bateen, Al Khalidiyah, Al Mushrif and Al Rawdah

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the hour before the subject

The most useful first fact is what time a session can realistically begin on a school night at your address, and whether a weekend morning is available. That single constraint removes more unsuitable options than anything else, and it is the one thing a family knows for certain.

  2. 02

Send the code sheet and two marked papers

The syllabus code, tier and series for the subject in question, plus photographs of the last two marked papers. A specialist reads those in ten minutes and can say where the marks are going. Without them, the first session is spent discovering what the scripts would have shown.

    Hear the coverage position honestly

If the subject and tier are well covered, you will have options within days. If they are thin, you will be told the likely wait and whether a different hour would help, before any booking is taken. If we cannot sensibly cover the combination, we will say that rather than approximate it.

  4. 04

Use the first session as a diagnostic

The first session costs nothing and no card details are taken before it. It produces a marked piece of work, the first entry in the error record, and a short plan. If the honest conclusion is that the school's support is adequate and nothing needs buying, that is what you will hear.

  5. 05

Read four scripts and four notes, then decide

After a month, put the marked scripts and the session notes side by side and ask whether the same question type has improved. Continue, change the hour, change the tutor or stop. The records exist so the decision is yours rather than a matter of trusting anybody's impression.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched on specification, then on your hour

The code and tier come first, because a tutor who teaches the wrong specification cannot be rescued by being available. Once that is fixed, the hour is the second filter, and distance plays no part in either, since every session is delivered over live video.

Coverage limits published, not discovered later

Higher-tier Chemistry, Extended second-language English, Computer Science and first-language Arabic are genuinely thin in this market. We say so, state the likely wait, and sometimes decline, rather than taking a booking and finding somebody approximately suitable afterwards.

Marked scripts in the first week

Marking against the published scheme, with lost marks attributed to a cause rather than a topic, from the first session rather than from the first review. Four scripts in a month is enough for a parent to judge whether the teaching is working, which is the whole point of producing them.

Four-line session notes you can actually use

Paper and component with the code, what was addressed at question-type level, what the student did unaided, and the one task set. Thirty of those read in ten minutes, and they travel with you if the tutor changes or you need evidence for the school.

Permit status you can verify

Ask for the private tuition work permit and the eligibility category. It is granted at no charge for two years, so it can be shown. We claim no regulator accreditation of any kind, because no tutoring provider holds one by virtue of tutoring, and we quote no fine figures because none are published.

No stake in talking you out of a local tutor

IB Gram runs no visiting service in the UAE, so this page quotes the visiting market's published rates straight and names the cases where a tutor in the room is genuinely better. If a nearby specialist teaching your child's exact code is free at a workable hour, take it.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

Does it matter how far away my child's IGCSE tutor lives?+

Only through the clock, and only if someone is travelling. Our sessions are one-to-one over live video, so the tutor's address is irrelevant and the binding constraint is what time your child is home, fed and able to concentrate. For most island households that is a workable start around half past four; on the mainland it is closer to half past five. If you are hiring a visiting tutor, distance matters a great deal, because the drive comes out of either the rate or the lesson.

What should I ask a tutor in the first ten minutes to test their subject knowledge?+

Ask three specification questions. Which tier do you usually teach in this subject, and how do the papers differ between Cambridge and Pearson? What does an alternative-to-practical question actually assess? And how do you mark a six-mark extended response against the published scheme? Precise answers that name papers, components and mark allocations mean they have taught the course. General answers about covering the syllabus and building confidence mean they may be competent but have not been examined on this before.

How long does it take to be matched with an IGCSE specialist here?+

It depends entirely on subject and tier, and the honest answer varies. Mathematics and the common sciences at the lower tier are usually available within a few days. Higher-tier Chemistry or Extended second-language English can take up to around two weeks. Computer Science 0478 and first-language Arabic are thin enough that the wait is genuinely variable and sometimes we decline. You should be told the expected wait before a booking is taken, not after, and a provider who promises immediate availability in every subject is not describing a real pool.

Which IGCSE subjects are hardest to find a specialist for in this emirate?+

Higher-tier Chemistry, English as a Second Language at the Extended route, Computer Science and Arabic as a First Language. The pattern holds across the market rather than being peculiar to one provider: the number of people who teach a minority subject at the top tier well in any one city is small. Insisting on a local match in those subjects usually means choosing from a list of one or two, which is how families end up paying specialist rates for somebody who studied the subject rather than taught the paper.

What should the first four marked scripts show me?+

Read them in order. The first shows whether marking is against the published scheme, with marks allocated per point and annotations naming the missing step. The second shows whether the diagnosis is specific, attributing lost marks to a cause rather than a topic. The third and fourth show whether anything moved, by repeating the same question type a fortnight later with the earlier losses marked. If the second attempt is a different question type entirely, nobody can judge progress, and that is worth raising immediately.

What makes a session note useful rather than decorative?+

Four lines. The paper and component with the syllabus code. What was addressed, at question-type level rather than topic level. What the student managed unaided by the end of the hour. And the single task set before the next session. Notes saying good progress today, or listing topics covered, record delivery rather than learning and will read identically in October and March. The reason to insist is practical: when a tutor changes or you need evidence for the school, the notes are what travels.

Is a visiting tutor's hour really shorter than an online hour?+

Usually, yes, and not through any dishonesty. A visiting hour contains arrival, settling, a conversation at the door and sometimes an early finish because another household is waiting. Fifty to fifty-five teaching minutes out of sixty paid is normal for a nearby address and less for a long cross-city drive. A live video session starts at the agreed minute and runs to the end. Convert any quote into dirhams per teaching minute rather than per hour and the arrangements become genuinely comparable.

How do I verify that someone is allowed to tutor privately in the UAE?+

Four steps. Ask whether they hold the MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023. Ask which eligibility category: registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18 all qualify. Ask to see it, since a real document can be shown. And check the fee story: the permit is granted at no charge for two years, so anybody describing a fee paid for it is describing something else entirely.

A tutor says they are approved by KHDA. Should that reassure me?+

No, and it should prompt a question. A KHDA educational services permit is a specific authorisation issued to training institutes operating from premises, and it is a Dubai instrument. An individual tutor holds a MoHRE private tuition work permit, which is a different document. No individual or platform acquires KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, Ministry of Education, IB or Cambridge accreditation by virtue of tutoring. IB Gram holds none of those and claims none. Ask instead to see the tuition permit, which is the document that actually applies.

What happens if the tutor turns out to be wrong for my child in week three?+

You should be able to change without starting from nothing, which is the practical reason the records matter. Marked scripts, session notes and the error record transfer to the next tutor, so the new person begins from a diagnosis rather than from a conversation. Ask any provider to describe their replacement process before you book. A described process with handover of records is a real answer; reassurance that the match will be right is not a process and tells you what to expect when it is not.

Can sessions start before the school run finishes on the mainland?+

Not usefully. From Al Shamkha, Al Reef or Mussafah the honest earliest weekday start is around a quarter past five for a live session, and later for anything involving a drive. The workable pattern is to invert the week: put the full timed paper on a weekend morning when a genuine two-hour window exists, and keep weekday contacts to thirty or forty minutes of mechanical work. Two short sessions sustain across a term better than one tired hour that gets cancelled in November.

Do we need a tutor in the same time zone as us?+

You need a tutor available at your hour, which is a slightly different thing, though in practice it amounts to the same. All slots are agreed and held in Gulf Standard Time, and the time zone the tutor happens to be sitting in is their scheduling problem rather than yours. What does matter is consistency: a slot that moves every week because of somebody else's clock produces a record you cannot compare session to session, which defeats the point of keeping one.

What do we need at home for a live session to work properly?+

Less than families expect. A laptop or tablet with a working camera, headphones, a desk or a cleared table, and the ability to photograph handwritten work. A printer helps considerably for timed papers but is not essential, since papers can be worked on paper and photographed. Reliable connectivity is the genuine requirement, and if that is a real problem at your address then a visiting tutor is the better answer, which this page says plainly because we do not provide one in the UAE.

Can one tutor take two children in the same household?+

If both are entered for the same code and tier and are at a similar point, a shared slot is efficient and each child gets roughly half the attention. If they are on different boards, different tiers or different years, it is a false economy, because the tutor alternates and each child receives a fragmented version of a different course. Households here frequently have siblings on different boards in the same subject, so check the codes before assuming a shared slot will work.

Should we book my child's own school teacher privately instead?+

It is the arrangement to avoid. Press reporting indicates that ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff prohibit paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, and that the private tuition permit's code of conduct bars serving students affiliated with the tutor's own school. Treat the detail as press-reported and confirm the current ADEK document before quoting it. A different teacher who knows the same specification carries none of that difficulty and can mark without a conflict of interest.

Is it worth paying more for a tutor who lives in Abu Dhabi?+

Only for things proximity actually provides. Local knowledge of a specific school's scheme of work is real but modest; the specification is national to the board, not local to the emirate. What a local tutor genuinely offers is the option of being in the room, which matters for younger children, for a student who struggles with screen learning, and where connectivity is poor. The visiting market charges roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour with travel inside the figure. Pay the premium for presence if you need presence, not for familiarity with the syllabus.

Tell us the hour, the code and the tier

The quickest route to a useful match is three facts: what time a session can realistically start at your address, the syllabus code and tier your child is entered for, and the last two marked papers. A subject specialist reads the scripts, says where the marks are going, and we tell you honestly whether that subject and tier is well covered or thin and how long a match is likely to take. The first session costs nothing and no card details are taken beforehand. If the nearest good option is a local tutor rather than us, we will say so.
