1-to-1 IGCSE Tutor in Abu Dhabi

Hiring a 1-to-1 IGCSE tutor in Abu Dhabi buys one thing a classroom cannot sell: every minute of attention goes to the questions your child got wrong. This page does the arithmetic on that, sets out the command words that decide how marks are awarded, and says plainly what a single hour can repair in each subject. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, with the first session free.

  • Every minute of the hour spent on this student's own errors
  • Command-word drills marked against the board's published criteria
  • One free 30-minute trial lesson per family, no card details taken
  • Scoped to a named component, so progress is countable not felt

IB & IGCSE in Abu Dhabi

The case for one student in the room is arithmetic, not sentiment

Most pages selling individual tuition make an emotional argument about attention. The stronger argument is numerical, and a parent can check it. In a class of twenty-four, a student speaks for perhaps two minutes an hour and has one written attempt marked a week, usually five or six days after writing it. In a session with a 1-to-1 IGCSE tutor in Abu Dhabi, the same student writes for forty minutes, has every attempt marked inside the hour, and hears the criterion each mark was awarded against. Those three ratios, not warmth or rapport, are what move a grade.

The reason they matter at IGCSE specifically is that most lost marks are not failures of understanding. They are habits that nobody has had time to interrupt: working omitted on a 'show that' question so method marks go unclaimed, a command word read as a synonym for an easier one, an answer to the question the student expected instead of the one printed, a graph scaled so the plotted points occupy a third of the grid. In a class these persist for a year because the feedback arrives too late and too generally to break them. In a one-to-one session they are interrupted at the moment they happen, which is the only point at which a habit is cheap to change.

This page is built around that claim and tests it honestly. It does the ratio arithmetic properly, including cost per corrected attempt, where group teaching sometimes wins. It sets out what the first diagnostic hour should establish. It covers the command-word vocabulary that decides how marks are allocated across every subject, which is the highest-yield thing an individual session can teach and the thing a class has no time for. Then it goes subject by subject through what one hour can genuinely repair, and what needs a block.

After that come the decisions families actually face: one session a week or two, one tutor across two subjects or a specialist for each, and the published AED rates for individual, small-group and class teaching in this market so any quote can be placed. The page ends with the cases where individual tuition is the wrong purchase, because they are real and nobody in this market writes them down.

Two facts to state up front. IB Gram delivers one-to-one tuition over live video to families across the emirate and does not offer home visits in Abu Dhabi, where ADEK supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools; visiting tutors are a service available only in India. And IB Gram is an independent tutor-matching platform holding no approval from ADEK, the Ministry of Education, Cambridge or Pearson, with no premises in the UAE. Every AED figure below was published by somebody else and is attributed.

At a glance

  • In a class of twenty-four a student speaks for roughly two minutes an hour; individually, they work for about forty
  • Feedback latency falls from days to seconds, which is what makes a habit cheap to break
  • Six command words account for a large share of avoidable mark loss across every IGCSE subject
  • Published rates for IGCSE specialists online run roughly AED 200-450 an hour; small groups are quoted per student and lower
  • Individual tuition is the wrong purchase for a tier ceiling, a missed entry deadline, or a student doing no work between sessions

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Abu Dhabi cohorts are mobile, and a large share of individual tuition demand here comes from students who arrived into IGCSE from a different system. The route a child took into Year 10 changes what the first sessions have to do, because the gaps are structural rather than random.

BRITAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Continuing from a British-curriculum Key Stage 3

The straightforward route: Key Stage 3 in the same school, then two examined years. Gaps here are specific and traceable, usually to a topic taught in a term the student missed or to a set change that skipped a strand. Individual tuition is efficient in this case because the diagnosis is narrow, and three sessions on one strand often closes something that has been dragging a grade for two years.

In Abu Dhabi this route runs through the island's long-established schools and the Khalifa City corridor, where maths setting often begins in Year 8. A setting decision made at twelve can still be shaping a tier decision at fifteen, which is worth raising in writing with the subject lead rather than accepting as settled.

CBSEAges 13-16 · Years 9-11

Transferring in from a CBSE or Indian-curriculum school

Usually a strong procedural foundation, particularly in mathematics, meeting an unfamiliar assessment style. The content gap is often smaller than the family fears and the technique gap larger: IGCSE papers reward method written out, structured multi-part reasoning and command-word discipline rather than a correct final answer. A student can be mathematically ahead of the class and still lose marks on every paper for a term.

This transfer is common across the Mussafah, Baniyas and Mohammed Bin Zayed City corridors, where several boards sit side by side. The first individual session should be spent on a marked IGCSE paper rather than on content, because the gap is almost always in how the answer is presented, and that is a fast repair once named.

AMERAges 13-16 · Years 9-11

Transferring in from an American-curriculum school

Here the assessment culture differs more than the content. Continuous assessment and coursework-weighted grading give way to terminal examinations where a single paper carries most of the subject. Students are often unpractised at long timed papers and at the extended-response question, where a position has to be held and supported across a paragraph rather than answered in a sentence.

Yas Island, Al Reem Island and Saadiyat have significant American-curriculum provision, so this transfer appears most in those communities. The useful early work is timed practice at full paper length, which parents often resist because it looks like testing rather than teaching. It is the fastest route to the marks.

MYPAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Transferring in from IB Middle Years

MYP builds inquiry, criterion-referenced self-assessment and extended project work, all of which transfer well. What does not transfer is the examination technique: MYP criteria reward process and reflection, while IGCSE papers reward precise answers to printed questions under time. Students from this route often write too much and too reflectively, which costs marks on short-answer items.

Several Abu Dhabi schools run MYP into either Diploma or IGCSE, and a mid-stream move between them is common when a family changes school. Individual sessions should start by marking one of the student's MYP-style answers against an IGCSE mark scheme, which makes the difference visible in about ten minutes.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the IGCSE subjects Abu Dhabi families most often book individual sessions for, described by what an hour alone with a tutor does that a class hour cannot. The distinction matters, because a subject where the gap is content needs a block and a subject where the gap is technique can move in a single session.

Mathematics (0580, 0980, Pearson 4MA1)

Core and Extended

The clearest case for individual work, because errors are visible at the line they occur. A class marks the final answer; a tutor watching the working intervenes at the step where the sign flipped or the substitution went in wrongly. Method marks on multi-step questions are the single largest recoverable pool in the subject.

Physics (0625, 0972, Pearson 4PH1)

Core and Extended

Individual time is best spent on the practical paper's written demands and on the two topics that reliably confuse: electricity and moments. A class teaches the content once; a student who misunderstood the current-voltage relationship in week three carries it to the exam unless somebody notices, which takes one conversation and a diagram.

Chemistry (0620, 0971, Pearson 4CH1)

Core and Extended

Moles work compounds, so an individual session earns its fee by rebuilding the first line of every calculation until it is automatic. A class cannot wait for one student to reach that point. Organic chemistry rewards pattern recognition, which is taught by having the student classify unfamiliar examples out loud and being corrected immediately.

Biology (0610, 0970, Pearson 4BI1)

Core and Extended

A volume subject where the individual gain is in extended-response discipline. Students know more than their marks suggest and write around the question instead of into it. One hour spent marking three six-mark answers against the criteria, aloud, usually changes how the next twenty are written.

English First Language (0500, 0990)

Single tier

Moves faster in individual sessions than any other subject, because writing is personal and class feedback is necessarily generic. Audience and register for the directed-writing task, and ruthless compression without copied phrasing for the summary, are both learnable in a handful of sessions once somebody edits with the student rather than for them.

English as a Second Language (0510, 0511)

Single tier, with speaking variants

Individual time pays in the note-making and summary exercises, where candidates lose accuracy marks by writing far more than the task allows. The speaking component differs between the two specification variants, so the first session should confirm which one the school entered before any rehearsal is planned around it.

Additional Mathematics (0606)

Single tier, extension course

Frequently taught in small school groups with little individual attention available, which is why it generates disproportionate tuition demand. Calculus and trigonometric identities arrive abruptly, and the test of readiness is whether a student can begin an unfamiliar multi-step question without being prompted at each stage.

Economics (0455) and Business Studies (0450)

Single tier

Diagram and evaluation subjects where the individual hour is spent drawing rather than discussing. A labelled axis, a shifted curve and a stated new equilibrium carry marks that are lost whenever a student explains in prose what the diagram should have shown. Evaluation needs a position held and defended, which is coached one answer at a time.

Computer Science (0478)

Single tier

Trace tables are abandoned halfway by most students and completed by few, and the difference is almost entirely practice under supervision. Validation against verification, pseudocode conventions and the problem-solving paper's structure all reward short repeated individual drills rather than long revision.

Geography (0460) and History (0470)

Single tier

Source and case-study subjects where marks hinge on using evidence rather than recalling it. An individual session is where a student learns to quote a figure from a resource, attribute a source and answer the actual command word, three habits that classroom feedback rarely has the minutes to correct per student.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Individual tuition comes in three shapes, and the right one depends on how much of the subject is at stake rather than on how worried the family is. IB Gram runs all three one-to-one over live video; what differs is the length of the slot and how the sequence is built.

One 90-minute slot a week

The default for a subject with a real content gap. Ninety minutes is long enough to diagnose from a marked script, teach the method, and have the student complete a timed attempt inside the same session, which is the sequence that makes the hour stick. Shorter slots tend to end before the attempt, which leaves the week's practice unsupervised at the moment it matters most.

  • Diagnosis, teaching and a timed attempt inside one session
  • A written note naming the component and the week's task
  • Set in Gulf Standard Time around the Abu Dhabi school run

Two shorter sessions a week

Better than one long slot when the problem is fluency rather than knowledge: algebraic manipulation, moles calculations, trace tables, vocabulary for an additional language. Two forty-five-minute contacts produce twice as many corrected attempts and halve the interval in which a wrong method can be practised into a habit. The cost is scheduling discipline during an exam term.

  • Twice the corrected attempts for the same weekly hour count
  • Shorter gap between an error and its correction
  • Suits fluency work rather than new content

A block built backwards from the paper order

Two to six individual sessions before a June or November entry, sequenced from the board's live published timetable so the final session covers the first paper sat rather than the last topic taught. Scope is a single named component, and each session ends with a timed attempt that is scored, so the trend is visible rather than asserted.

  • Sequenced from the official timetable for the entered series
  • One named component, not a subject-wide revision plan
  • Every attempt timed and scored, with the score written down

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Abu Dhabi

01

The ratio arithmetic, including where group teaching wins

Three numbers decide what a teaching hour is worth to one student: how many minutes that student spends producing work, how many of their attempts get marked, and how long they wait for the marking. All three degrade with group size, and they degrade faster than the price falls, which is the honest case for individual tuition. It is also, read the other way, the honest case against it in some situations, because cost per corrected attempt is not always lowest at a ratio of one.

Work the numbers through for a sixty-minute hour. In a class of twenty-four, teacher talk and administration take a large share, the student writes for perhaps fifteen minutes, speaks for one or two, and has one piece marked a week with the feedback arriving several days later. In a group of six the writing time is similar but the marking is quicker and some of the feedback is addressed to this student. Individually, the student writes for around forty minutes, every attempt is marked inside the session, and the wait is seconds. A tutor also hears the student's reasoning, which is where misconceptions actually live.

Where group teaching wins is on cost per corrected attempt for a student who is broadly on track. If the problem is that a child does too little practice rather than that they practise wrongly, a group class that enforces structure for a lower fee per student is reasonable value. Individual tuition earns its premium when the practice is happening and the marks still are not, because that gap is almost always a specific, diagnosable habit, and a habit needs to be interrupted while it is being performed.

What the first individual hour should establish

  • Bring the most recent marked script and the mark scheme if the school released one
  • Four problems look identical on a report: content, method, command word, pacing
  • Confirm the specification code before any revision plan is built on it
  • Expect a one-sentence problem statement, narrow enough to be disproved

A first session that goes well does not teach much. It establishes which of four different problems the student has, because they look identical on a report card and need completely different work. The four are: content not known, content known but method not written, command word misread, and paper not completed. A fifth, less common but worth excluding early, is that the student is entered on a different specification from the one they have been revising.

The diagnostic itself is simple and depends on having a marked script in front of both of them. Where did the marks go? If the student can talk fluently through a question they scored two out of six on, the content is there and the writing is not. If they cannot start it, the content is missing. If they wrote a correct answer with no working on a 'show that' question, they have lost method marks to a habit. If the last two questions are blank, this is pacing, and it will not respond to more content teaching. The distinctions take about fifteen minutes to make and change everything that follows.

What should come out of the first hour is a written statement of the problem in one sentence, narrow enough to be wrong: not 'needs to improve in chemistry' but 'loses three to five marks per paper on mole calculations because relative formula mass is computed from memory rather than written down'. A parent who receives a sentence like that can judge progress. A parent who receives general reassurance cannot, and will still be unable to in March.

03

Command words: the instruction vocabulary that decides the mark allocation

Examination papers are written in a controlled vocabulary, and each word in it carries an implied mark structure. A student who treats describe, explain, compare and evaluate as rough synonyms for 'write about' will lose marks on every paper of their life regardless of how well they know the subject. This is the highest-yield thing an individual session can teach, and it is almost never taught in a class, because it needs a student's own answer in front of them to correct.

The pattern is consistent across subjects. Describe wants observable features with no causation. Explain wants a mechanism, usually a because. Compare wants both sides in the same sentence, not two separate paragraphs. Suggest invites a reasoned possibility and tolerates more than one right answer. Calculate wants the working shown and the unit stated. Evaluate wants a judgement reached, not a list of advantages followed by a list of disadvantages. The marks follow those structures, so an answer with the right content in the wrong shape scores badly.

The drill that fixes this is short and dull, which is why it survives individual tuition and not group teaching. Take four questions the student has already answered, cover the answers, and have them state what each command word is asking for before writing anything. Then have them rewrite one answer to the required shape and mark it aloud against the published criteria, criterion by criterion. Ten minutes a session for a month is usually enough, and the gain shows up across every subject at once because the vocabulary is shared.

SIX COMMAND WORDS AND THE SHAPE EACH ANSWER NEEDS

DescribeObservable features or trends, no cause requiredExplaining the cause instead and running out of timeRewrite the answer with every 'because' deleted

04

What a single hour actually repairs, subject by subject

Families buy tuition in hours and think in terms, which makes it hard to judge value. The useful distinction is between a procedure, which one session plus a week of practice can fix, and a fluency or knowledge gap, which needs a block of four to eight. Being told which of the two you are buying is a reasonable expectation and a good test of whether the tutor has diagnosed anything.

Procedures are specific and testable. The formula line before a calculation. Choosing a graph scale so the points fill the grid. Completing a trace table to the last row. Planning a directed-writing answer by naming audience, form and purpose in two minutes. Phrasing an observation in testable terms. Each of these is a habit with a definable right version, and a student who has done it correctly five times under supervision will usually keep doing it.

Blocks are different work. Algebraic fluency, mole calculations, organic chemistry pattern recognition, extended-response discipline, vocabulary in an additional language: these are built by repetition over weeks, and the measure of progress is a falling error rate on repeated attempts rather than a feeling of improvement. The table below splits the subjects accordingly, so a parent can ask for the right size of commitment rather than the default of a weekly slot until the exams.

The practical use of that split is in the booking conversation. Ask the tutor, after the diagnostic session, which of the two they think they are selling and how they will know when it is done. A procedure answer should come with a number: five correct supervised repetitions, then checked again a fortnight later. A block answer should come with a measure and a review point: four sessions on this question type, then a timed attempt scored against the same paper. A tutor who cannot describe the end of the work in either form is describing an open-ended arrangement, and open-ended arrangements are where most of the money in this market goes without anybody being able to say what it bought.

One session a week, two, or a short block before the series

Cadence gets decided by the calendar and the family's budget, usually in that order, and it is worth deciding on the problem instead. The question to answer first is whether the gap is knowledge, fluency or technique, because each responds to a different rhythm. Knowledge gaps need a longer single slot where content can be taught and then tested in the same sitting. Fluency needs frequent short contacts, because the interval between practice sessions is when a wrong method gets rehearsed. Technique needs a short block and then stopping.

The second consideration is what the student does between sessions, which matters more than the number of sessions. A session is where errors are diagnosed; the week is where they are corrected. A student who does the set work and a student who does not will diverge within a month regardless of how many hours were purchased, which is why the set work should be small, specific and checked at the start of the next session rather than optional.

The third is knowing when to stop, which almost nothing in this market is designed to tell you. A plan should get narrower across a term: fewer components, fewer hours, a more specific target. If a tutor is still working across the whole syllabus in week ten, the plan is touring rather than repairing. The honest end state for most subjects is that tuition stops before the exams because the component stopped losing marks, and the remaining preparation is the student's own timed practice.

One tutor across two subjects, or a specialist for each

  • Core and lower Extended: one tutor across maths and a science is often sensible
  • Top of Extended: split, because the detail is specification-specific
  • One slot covering two subjects usually becomes one subject plus fifteen minutes
  • Combine when the two subjects share one failing habit, not to save a booking

This decision is usually made on budget and should be made on where the marks are. At Core and lower Extended level, one tutor can reasonably cover maths and a science, because much of the science difficulty at that level is mathematical and a strong mathematician handles it. At the top of the Extended tier the picture changes, because the mark-winning detail becomes specification-specific: which practical paper is sat, how an observation must be phrased, how a graph is expected to be drawn, which formulae are given and which are assumed.

There is also a hidden cost to combining. Two subjects means two sets of marked scripts to read, two components to track and two mark schemes to work from, inside the same weekly hour. In practice one subject gets the attention and the other gets the last fifteen minutes, which is worse than not booking it. If the budget allows only one slot, the better arrangement is usually to put the specialist on the subject with the weaker marks and use the school's own clinic provision for the other, which is free and under-used.

Where combining genuinely works is when the two subjects share a single failing habit. A student losing method marks in maths is usually losing them in physics too, and a student who cannot hold a position across a paragraph will underperform in both economics and history. In that case one tutor working on the shared habit across both subjects is more efficient than two specialists each addressing it separately, and the plan should say so explicitly rather than treating the pairing as a convenience.

What the Abu Dhabi market charges for individual, small-group and class teaching

Published UAE figures make the ratio premium visible. Budget online tutoring, often by university students, is advertised from roughly AED 45 to AED 150 an hour, with one platform quoting from the low AED 30s. Qualified subject tutors online sit at roughly AED 150 to AED 300; one UAE agency publishes IGCSE from AED 150. IGCSE, IB and A Level specialists are quoted between about AED 200 and AED 450, with a UK-based agency publishing AED 270 and a rate aggregator giving AED 200 to AED 450 or more. In-home individual sessions, which carry travel inside the rate, are quoted between roughly AED 180 and AED 500. Named premium tutors reach AED 650.

Group rates are quoted per student and are lower, which is the whole appeal, but the comparison families should run is cost per corrected attempt rather than cost per hour. A group hour at a third of the price that produces a quarter of the marked attempts for your child is not a saving. Monthly shapes published in this market include around AED 799 for eight online sessions, and roughly AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 for four two-hour in-home sessions. Rate aggregators estimate weekly one-hour tuition at roughly AED 240 to AED 600 a month at the budget end and AED 1,000 to AED 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support.

All of those figures were published by other organisations in 2026 and are reproduced so you have a reference band. None is IB Gram's price list; the rate here is agreed after the free trial lesson rather than published in advance. For context on household cost, Dubai's regulator confirmed in May 2026 that private school fees in that emirate would not rise for the 2026-27 academic year under a wider economic incentives package, so for many families the tuition line is the part of the education budget that is actually moving.

When individual tuition is the wrong thing to buy

  • A tier ceiling is an entry decision, not a teaching problem
  • Entry deadlines sit months before the papers; check them before booking hours
  • No practice between sessions means a flat error rate whatever the teaching is like
  • A whole-timetable collapse is a pastoral conversation before it is a tutoring one

Four situations come up repeatedly where a family is about to buy individual sessions and should not, and saying so costs us a booking and keeps the page honest. The first is a tier ceiling. If a child is entered for the Core tier in a tiered subject, the top grades are not available to them no matter how good the teaching is, because the Core papers do not contain the questions those grades are awarded for. The work to do is a conversation with the subject lead about the entry, not a tutor.

The second is an administrative problem wearing academic clothes. A missed entry deadline, a wrong specification on the entry, an unregistered private candidacy: none of these is fixed by teaching, and all of them are urgent in a way tuition is not. Cambridge's own published key dates make the point, and in the UAE the two series that exist are June and November. Entries for the June papers close in the spring, a full term ahead of the first exam, and the November entries close over the summer before an October-November window. Pearson runs the same way: its International GCSE November 2026 papers run from late October to 19 November 2026, with the entry long shut by the time the timetable goes up on the noticeboard. Deadlines sit months ahead of papers, and a family discovering this in the term of the exam is dealing with an administrative fact rather than a teaching one.

The third is a student doing no work between sessions. The lesson diagnoses; the week repairs. A student who attends willingly and practises nothing will show a flat error rate across two months of excellent teaching, and the right response is to find out why rather than to buy more hours. The fourth is a motivation or wellbeing problem presenting as a subject problem. A fifteen-year-old who has stopped trying in four subjects at once is not short of a maths tutor, and the school's pastoral team is the better first call. Individual tuition is powerful and narrow. It repairs diagnosed, specific, academic gaps, and it is poor value against anything else.

09

Coursework, drafts and what a tutor working alone with a student must not do

  • Set the boundary at the first session, not during a deadline week
  • Feedback on the student's own draft is allowed; supplying text is not
  • The malpractice consequence falls on the candidate, not the tutor
  • Read specifications and mark schemes on the board's own site

Individual tuition creates the conditions in which academic honesty gets quietly breached, because nobody else is in the room. A tutor working alone with a student on a coursework folder is one bad decision away from supplying sentences, and a student under deadline pressure will often invite exactly that. The boundary therefore has to be explicit at the start rather than negotiated at eleven at night in April.

The rule the boards apply is that assessed work must be the candidate's own. A tutor may teach the skills, explain the assessment criteria, discuss a plan, ask questions about a draft and give written feedback on what the student has produced. Supplying text, reshaping a paragraph until the sentences are no longer the student's, or correcting a draft to completion is malpractice, and the consequence falls on the candidate rather than on the tutor. That asymmetry is worth stating to a teenager directly: the person who loses the qualification is them.

There is a materials rule alongside it. Specifications, past papers, mark schemes and examiner reports are the boards' copyright and are published on their own sites for anyone to read. A tutor should point a family to the official page rather than distribute copied folders, and a tutor who offers unreleased material should end the engagement. The useful version of document literacy is knowing which document answers which question: the specification for what is examined, the mark scheme for how marks are awarded, the examiner report for what went wrong in the last series. Our position is plain: a tutor here teaches, questions, marks against criteria and gives feedback on the student's own draft, and nobody will produce assessed work on a candidate's behalf.

Where we tutor

Where individual tuition demand concentrates in the emirate

Group classes and individual sessions are not equally available across Abu Dhabi, and the gap follows school provision rather than income. These notes describe what families in each community can realistically find locally and what the online format changes for them.

Al Nahyan and Al Karamah

Central island neighbourhoods near several established schools, with group tuition widely available nearby. Individual demand here is mostly for a named component rather than a whole subject, which suits a short block of two to four sessions.

Al Muroor and Al Mushrif

Long-settled areas with the emirate's densest supply of tuition centres within reach. Families here often arrive having tried a group class first and found it moved at the wrong pace for one specific gap, which is exactly what individual sessions are for.

Yas Island

Strong local school provision but a thin local supply of subject specialists at the top of the Extended tier. Demand concentrates on Additional Mathematics and the separate sciences, and on students transferring in from an American-curriculum route.

Al Zahiyah

Dense, central and well connected, with short school runs that make a 5pm start realistic. Individual sessions here are often booked for English as a Second Language and for the note-making tasks where accuracy marks are most often lost.

Baniyas

A large schooling population spanning several boards, so a child's classmates may be sitting different specifications in the same subject. Confirming the code before booking matters more here than almost anywhere else in the emirate.

Mussafah and Mohammed Bin Zayed City

Group classes are plentiful and inexpensive; individual specialist supply for Extended science is the gap. Evening traffic on the approach roads makes a travelling tutor unreliable, so a fixed online slot from 6pm holds better than a local arrangement.

Al Maqtaa and Khalifa City

A corridor with heavy British-curriculum enrolment and predictable Year 11 demand for maths and the three separate sciences. Households here often run two school timetables at once, which makes consecutive sibling slots on one evening the practical arrangement.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Abu Dhabi

Al Nahyan, Al Karamah and Al Muroor

Central island schools, several with long histories in the emirate and provision running from primary through to A Level. ADEK publishes inspection outcomes for these schools, and the most useful way to read one is alongside your own child's marked work rather than on its own. Students we support attend schools across this cluster.

  • Abu Dhabi Grammar School
  • Al Nahda National Schools
  • Abu Dhabi International School
  • Al Rabeeh School
  • Al Muna Academy

Yas Island, Saadiyat and Al Maqtaa

The newer international schools, with mixed British, American and IB provision and highly mobile cohorts. Mid-year transfers are common enough here that a student may arrive having studied a different specification for the same subject name, and the first individual session is often spent establishing exactly that.

  • West Yas Academy
  • Cranleigh Abu Dhabi
  • Repton School Abu Dhabi
  • The British International School Abu Dhabi
  • Al Yasmina Academy

Baniyas, Mussafah and Mohammed Bin Zayed City

A wide spread of boards and the emirate's largest supply of group tuition. The practical consequence for families is that cheap group hours are easy to find and individual specialist hours for Extended science are not, which is the gap the online format closes rather than discounts.

  • Bright Riders School
  • Shining Star International School
  • GEMS Cambridge International School Abu Dhabi
  • Al Ittihad National Private School
  • Emirates Future International Academy

Schools are named only as context for the Abu Dhabi IGCSE market; IB Gram is an independent tutor-matching platform with no affiliation with, or endorsement from, any school, group or examination board named on this page.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the code, the tier and the marked script

The specification code from the statement of entry, the tier where the subject is tiered, and the most recent marked paper. With those three the first session diagnoses instead of interviewing, and the match is made on who has prepared candidates for those papers rather than on who has a free Tuesday.

  2. 02

A free trial lesson, one per family

Thirty minutes at no charge with the matched tutor and no card details taken, one per family. Watch for two things: how many minutes your child spends writing rather than listening, and whether the tutor names a criterion when marking an answer. Those two observations tell you more than any discussion of teaching philosophy.

  3. 03

Get the problem in one sentence

The first full session should end with a written statement narrow enough to be wrong, naming the component, the habit and the marks at stake. Not a comment about needing more detail, but something like losing three to five marks a paper on mole calculations because formula mass is computed from memory.

  4. 04

Four sessions, then a marked repeat

Work the named component for four sessions ending in a timed, scored attempt at the same question type that was diagnosed in week one. You then hold a before and an after. If nothing has moved and the tutor cannot say why, we match again rather than sell a fifth session on optimism.

  5. 05

    Narrow the scope, then stop

From week five the target gets narrower, and hours move off a component once it stops losing marks. The honest end state for most subjects is that individual tuition finishes before the exams, with the remaining preparation being the student's own timed practice. A plan that grows to fill the term is not a plan.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The hour is spent on this student's errors

Work starts from the script the school already marked, so the session addresses the questions this child got wrong rather than a scheme of work written for a class. That is the entire value of the ratio, and it is measurable: four or more corrected attempts in a session against roughly one a week in a classroom.

Marked against published criteria, out loud

Answers are marked to the board's own criteria with the criterion named, so the student hears what each mark is awarded for instead of whether the answer was good. This is the habit that survives into the exam hall, and it is the clearest separation between specification teaching and general subject help.

Command-word work that pays across every subject

Ten minutes a session on describe, explain, compare, calculate, suggest and evaluate changes how answers are shaped in every paper the student sits. It needs the student's own answer in front of them to correct, which is exactly what a class hour cannot provide and an individual hour can.

Scoped tightly, with an endpoint

Each engagement names a component and a measure, and the scope narrows across the term rather than expanding. Hours come off a component once it stops losing marks. A tutor still working across the whole syllabus in week ten is charging for attendance, and we would rather say so than keep the slot.

Matched on the specification, not on travel time

An Additional Mathematics 0606 or Pearson 4CH1 specialist is found among tutors who have prepared candidates for those papers anywhere in the Gulf timezone. For families in Baniyas, Mussafah and Al Maqtaa, where local individual supply for Extended science is thin, that changes what is available rather than merely what is convenient.

The cases against individual tuition are on the page

Tier ceilings, missed entry deadlines, no practice between sessions and whole-timetable collapse are all situations where buying hours is poor value, and they are written out above. A comparison that never argues against its own product is a brochure, and a parent reading this market deserves better than another brochure.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

What does one-to-one teaching actually give my child that a class of twenty-four cannot?+

Three measurable things. Producing time: roughly forty minutes of writing in a sixty-minute session against ten to fifteen in a class. Corrected attempts: four or more a session against about one a week. And feedback latency: seconds instead of days, which is what makes a habit cheap to break, because the error is interrupted while it is being performed. The fourth, less countable, is that a tutor hears the student's reasoning aloud, and misconceptions live in the reasoning rather than in the written answer.

Is a small group of four cheaper per mark gained than individual sessions?+

Sometimes, and it depends on what is wrong. If the problem is that your child does too little practice rather than practises wrongly, a group that enforces structure at a lower fee per student is reasonable value. If the practice is happening and the marks are not moving, the gap is a specific diagnosable habit, and a habit needs interrupting at the moment it occurs, which a group cannot do for one student. Compare cost per corrected attempt rather than cost per hour; a third of the price for a quarter of the marking is not a saving.

How long should a single IGCSE session be, sixty minutes or ninety?+

Ninety when there is a real content gap, because the useful sequence is diagnose, teach, then have the student complete a timed attempt in the same sitting, and sixty minutes often ends before the attempt. That leaves the week's practice unsupervised at the point it matters most. Sixty works well for fluency and technique work, and two forty-five-minute sessions a week work better still for things like algebraic manipulation or trace tables, because they halve the interval in which a wrong method can be rehearsed into a habit.

What should the tutor tell me after the very first session?+

One sentence naming the problem narrowly enough that it could be proved wrong. Not that your child needs to show more detail, but something closer to: loses three to five marks a paper on mole calculations because relative formula mass is worked out from memory instead of written down. A statement like that lets you judge progress in four weeks. General reassurance after session one will still be general reassurance in March, and by then you will have paid for twenty hours without a way to assess any of them.

Why do command words matter so much more than parents expect?+

Because the mark structure follows them. Describe awards marks for observable features with no causation; explain requires a mechanism; compare wants both sides weighed in one sentence; calculate wants method and a unit; evaluate wants a judgement reached rather than a list. A student who treats these as synonyms writes correct content in the wrong shape and scores badly across every paper they sit. It is the highest-yield thing an individual session teaches, and it needs the student's own answer in front of them, which is why classes rarely manage it.

My child understands the subject but the marks are poor. What is going on?+

Usually one of three things, and a marked script tells you which. Method not written, so method marks on multi-step questions go unclaimed even when the final answer is right. Command word misread, so the answer addresses a different question from the one printed. Or pacing, where the last questions are blank rather than wrong. All three are technique rather than knowledge, all three respond quickly to individual work, and none of them improves with more content teaching, which is the usual and expensive first response.

Can one tutor handle both maths and physics for my child at Extended level?+

At Core and lower Extended, often yes, because much of the physics difficulty is mathematical. At the top of Extended it is usually better to split, since the mark-winning detail becomes specification-specific: which practical paper is sat, how observations must be phrased, how graphs are expected to be drawn. There is also a practical trap. Two subjects in one weekly hour normally becomes one subject plus the last fifteen minutes. If budget allows one slot, put the specialist on the weaker subject and use the school's clinic for the other.

How many individual sessions before I can tell whether this tutor is right?+

Four, if they are structured for it. Session one diagnoses from a marked script and produces a one-sentence problem statement. Sessions two and three teach and practise the named component. Session four sets a timed attempt at the same question type and scores it. You then hold a before and an after on comparable work, which is the only honest basis for a decision. Four weeks of warm reports with no repeat attempt anywhere in them is not evidence, however pleasant the sessions have been.

Do individual tutors in Abu Dhabi need a licence to teach my child privately?+

They need a permit. Private tutoring in the UAE runs through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, which introduced private tuition work permits. The permit is granted free of charge for two years and covers categories including registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Anyone tutoring privately without one is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. Ask to see it before the first paid session; it costs nothing to hold.

Is it allowed for a teacher at my child's own school to take them for paid sessions?+

Not their own students. Abu Dhabi's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff, as reported in the press, prohibit teachers from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE permit's code of conduct also bars serving students affiliated with the teacher's own school. Verify the current wording against ADEK's own policy document before relying on a summary, including this one. The practical point stands either way: a tutor offering to teach your child privately while teaching them in school is offering something they should not.

How much practice should my child do between individual sessions?+

Small, specific and checked. One question set of fifteen to thirty minutes, on the exact question type worked on in the session, handed back at the start of the next lesson. The session diagnoses and the week repairs, which means a student doing nothing between sessions will show a flat error rate across two months of good teaching. If the set work is not happening, the right response is to find out why rather than to buy more hours, because more hours will produce the same flat line at twice the cost.

When should individual tuition stop?+

When the component stops losing marks, which is usually before the exams rather than at them. A plan should narrow across a term: fewer components, fewer hours, a more specific target. If a tutor is still working across the whole syllabus in week ten, the engagement has become attendance. The healthy end state is that the student runs their own timed practice in the final weeks, with the tutor available for a short block if a mock reveals something new. Open-ended weekly tuition to the last day is common and rarely necessary.

Is individual tuition worth it if my child is entered for the Core tier?+

It can be, for a specific purpose, but check the entry first. The Core papers do not contain the questions the top grades are awarded for, so the ceiling is set by the tier rather than by the teaching. Where individual work pays on Core is completeness: most Core candidates lose grades by leaving questions unattempted, and the proportion of a paper attempted is the fastest thing to move. If the family's target sits above the Core ceiling, the conversation to have is with the subject lead about the tier, in writing.

What happens in an individual session if my child will not talk?+

A good tutor stops talking too, and puts a question in front of them instead. Silence in a one-to-one session is usually a response to being asked to perform conversationally, and it resolves when the task is written rather than spoken. If it does not resolve across two sessions, the match is wrong and should be changed rather than persisted with; some teenagers will work for one adult and not another for reasons neither can articulate. Use the free trial to see which you have before paying for a term.

How do I stop a weekly session from drifting into general homework help?+

Write the scope down and ask for it in the session note each week. Homework help is reactive and open-ended by nature, which is why most tuition drifts into it: there is always something due tomorrow. The discipline is to name one component, work it until a timed repeat attempt improves, then name the next one. Agree with the tutor that homework can take the last ten minutes if it must, and that the first forty belong to the named component regardless of what is due.

Can a tutor help with a coursework folder without crossing a line?+

Yes, and the boundary needs stating at the first session rather than during a deadline week. A tutor may teach the skills, explain the assessment criteria, discuss a plan, ask questions about a draft and give written feedback on what the student has produced. Supplying text or reshaping a paragraph until the sentences are no longer the student's is malpractice, and the consequence falls on the candidate rather than the tutor. Say that to your child directly: the person who loses the qualification is them, not the adult who helped.

Bring a marked script and take the trial

A 1-to-1 IGCSE tutor in Abu Dhabi is worth paying for when there is a diagnosed, specific gap and someone to interrupt it while it happens. So start with evidence rather than a booking: find the most recent marked paper, note the specification code and the tier, and look at where the marks actually went. Then take the free trial lesson, one per family and no card details taken, and watch how long your child spends writing. Expect a one-sentence problem statement at the end of the first full session, and a timed repeat attempt by the fourth. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, anywhere in the emirate.
