IB & IGCSE in Abu Dhabi

A Physics IA is marked on evidence, so the support should leave evidence too

The IB Physics internal assessment is a single scientific investigation reported in no more than 3,000 words, marked out of 24 across four criteria worth six marks each: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. It is 20% of the Physics grade at Standard and Higher Level alike, marked by the school and moderated externally by the IB. Schools allocate class time for it, and in Abu Dhabi that allocation almost never covers the part students find hardest, which is making their own data defensible.

Parents here usually arrive with a specific artefact in hand: a draft, a teacher's comment, or a mark in the middle of the range with no explanation of how to move it. That is the right place to start, and it is why this page is built around evidence rather than reassurance. A Physics IA is assessed on what is on the page, so the only useful account of tutoring is what changes on the page, week by week, with a mark attached to each version. If a tutor cannot name the criterion a session worked on and the mark the draft now earns, there is nothing for a parent to check.

The pattern in Abu Dhabi drafts is consistent enough to be predictable. Research design is competent: students pick a sensible relationship, identify variables and control what they can. Data analysis is where marks start to leak, because uncertainties are stated but not propagated, graphs carry no error bars, and gradients are read off without any account of what the uncertainty in that gradient actually is. Conclusion then cites a literature value without comparing it properly, and evaluation lists weaknesses without ranking them by effect on the result.

None of that is a physics knowledge problem. A student scoring a 6 in Physics can score fourteen out of twenty-four on the investigation, because the report never shows the quantitative reasoning the criteria ask for. That is good news for a family deciding whether tutoring is worth it, because the fixes are specific, visible and markable, and you can check them yourself against each returned draft rather than waiting for a report card.

All of it happens one-to-one over live video. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. For investigation work that suits the task: the student shares their spreadsheet, the tutor recalculates an uncertainty live, and the graph is rebuilt on screen with error bars while the student watches the gradient uncertainty change. ADEK licenses and inspects the emirate's private schools, which set their own IA deadlines, and those deadlines cluster, so the earlier a draft exists the more a session can do with it.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

The investigation is a DP task, but the practical skills behind it start much earlier in the IB continuum. Here is what each programme contributes for a family in this emirate.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Physics is taken at SL or HL from group four. The internal assessment is one scientific investigation, 24 marks, 20% of the grade, with the remaining 80% sat in written papers. HL students meet additional content and additional-higher-level material, but the investigation specification and its criteria are identical at both levels.

Abu Dhabi schools generally run the investigation in the second half of DP1 or the first term of DP2, in the same window as the Mathematics exploration. Families here frequently need both tasks supported in the same two months, which is a scheduling problem more than a subject one.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

MYP Sciences is assessed partly on inquiring and designing and on processing and evaluating, which are the direct ancestors of the DP criteria. A student who has written MYP lab reports arrives knowing what a controlled variable is, though usually not how to propagate an uncertainty.

Continuum schools around Al Raha and Saadiyat produce DP1 physicists comfortable with lab writing. Students arriving from a British or Indian system in the emirate often meet uncertainty analysis for the first time in the DP, which is one or two extra sessions, predictably.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1-Year 6

Primary Years Programme

Inquiry in the PYP builds the habit of asking what would change the result, which is the question criterion D eventually asks formally. None of it is externally assessed, so nothing here affects a Diploma grade, but the reflex matters.

Families in Abu Dhabi with children across several programmes often ask when science becomes graded by the IB. For Physics the answer is the DP: the investigation is the first science coursework that carries marks towards a Diploma.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

An investigation can sit anywhere in the syllabus, but some themes give cleaner data and easier uncertainty analysis than others. These are the areas we work in and what each means for a 24-mark report.

Space, time and motion

SL and HL

Kinematics, forces, momentum and energy. The most common investigation territory because the apparatus is accessible and the relationships are clean. The risk is a projectile or pendulum study so familiar that criterion A scores low for an unoriginal, under-justified design.

The particulate nature of matter

SL and HL

Thermal physics, gas laws and energy transfer. Excellent for linearisation, because several relationships become straight lines under the right substitution, which is exactly what criterion B rewards. Temperature control is the main experimental weakness to address in the design.

Wave behaviour

SL and HL

Standing waves, resonance, refraction and interference. Rich data and unforgiving measurement: a resonance tube investigation can produce beautiful results or an unusable data set depending on how the fundamental is identified and how the end correction is handled.

Fields

SL and HL

Gravitational, electric and magnetic fields, circuits and electromagnetic induction. Circuit investigations are the safest route to a strong data set because instruments give repeatable readings with known instrumental uncertainties, which makes propagation straightforward to show.

Nuclear and quantum physics

SL and HL

Radioactivity, fission and quantum phenomena. Distinctive and difficult to do experimentally at school level in this emirate, so students here usually approach it through simulation or secondary data, which requires a much stronger justification under criterion A.

Additional higher level content

HL only

Rotational dynamics, thermodynamic cycles and further field theory. An HL student is not required to investigate HL content, but a design drawn from it often produces a more interesting relationship and a more defensible claim to originality.

Uncertainty and error analysis

SL and HL

Not a theme but the backbone of criterion B. Absolute, fractional and percentage uncertainties, propagation through products and powers, uncertainty in a gradient from maximum and minimum lines, and knowing when a result is consistent with a literature value.

Data logging and sensors

SL and HL

Where a school has the equipment, sensor data raises resolution and sample size at once. It also introduces systematic effects worth discussing in criterion D, such as calibration drift and sampling rate, which gives evaluation something quantitative to say.

Simulation and secondary data investigations

SL and HL

Permitted and sometimes the only option for a topic, but the design has to work harder: the model's assumptions, the source's reliability and the parameter ranges must all be justified. We treat these as higher-risk routes and say so before a student commits.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Investigation support divides naturally by stage, and each stage produces a different artefact. Choose by where the data is, not by how worried the student is.

Design review before data collection

One or two sessions on the research question, the variables and the method, before a single measurement is taken. The cheapest and most effective point to intervene, because a design that cannot produce a clean relationship wastes every hour of data collection that follows it.

  • Research question narrowed to one measurable relationship with a range
  • Instrumental uncertainties identified for each instrument the student will use
  • Repeat strategy and range of the independent variable agreed in advance
  • A design the student takes to their own teacher for approval

Analysis and marking block, three to four sessions

The common request. Raw data exists; the work is turning it into propagated uncertainties, a linearised graph with error bars, a gradient with its own uncertainty, and a conclusion that compares properly with an accepted value. Each session returns a criterion-level mark on the current draft.

  • Uncertainty propagation worked through on the student's own numbers
  • Linearisation chosen and justified, error bars plotted, gradient uncertainty derived
  • Conclusion rewritten to compare quantitatively rather than approvingly
  • Evaluation weaknesses ranked by their effect on the result

Weekly Physics with the investigation inside it

For students who need paper technique as well. A standing weekly slot on course content and past-paper method, with investigation sessions folded in at design, first-draft and post-marking points. This buys the 80% of the grade in the papers alongside the 20% in the report.

  • Course content and paper two long-answer technique week by week
  • Investigation sessions scheduled at the three points where they pay
  • Mock-week pauses rather than a full stop
  • A clear separation between what is taught and what the student must author

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Abu Dhabi

01

What IB physics IA help in Abu Dhabi actually involves

  • Every session output tied to one of the four criteria, in writing
  • A cold mark on a full draft, closer to moderation than a familiar teacher's read
  • An honest early verdict on whether the data set can support a conclusion
  • Uncertainties propagated, plotted and carried into the conclusion

It involves four criteria and nothing else. Research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation are worth six marks each, and every hour of tutoring should be traceable to one of them. A session that improves a student's general physics is a good session and may not move the report at all, which is why we express every output as a criterion, a mark and a reason, and send it in writing afterwards.

The first substantive question in any first session is what evidence exists. Raw data in a spreadsheet is evidence. A teacher's comment is evidence. A full draft is the best evidence of all, because it can be marked cold, and a cold mark from someone who does not know the student is a closer approximation of moderation than a teacher's mark can be. Where there is nothing yet, the session goes on design, which is the stage with the highest return.

The second question is whether the data can support a claim. Physics investigations fail quietly at this point. A student has eight data points across a narrow range with no repeats, and no analysis will rescue it: the gradient uncertainty will swamp the result, and criterion C will have nothing to conclude. Saying this plainly in week one, when there is still time to collect more, is worth more than any amount of help with the writing in week four.

The third is the quantitative reasoning the criteria want shown. Absolute and percentage uncertainties on every measured quantity, propagation through the calculation, error bars on the graph, a gradient uncertainty from maximum and minimum lines, and a conclusion that states whether the accepted value lies within the experimental range. That sequence is where most of the recoverable marks in an Abu Dhabi draft are sitting.

02

The twenty-four marks, criterion by criterion

The four criteria are equally weighted at six marks each, which is unusual and strategically important. A student who pours effort into a beautiful method and neglects evaluation is leaving a quarter of the mark on the table. We have read drafts from this emirate with immaculate designs and two-paragraph evaluations, scoring five out of six on criterion A and two out of six on criterion D.

Research design covers the research question, the methodology and the justification of both. Data analysis covers processing, uncertainties and graphical treatment. Conclusion covers the interpretation of the result and its comparison with accepted scientific context. Evaluation covers strengths, weaknesses and realistic improvements, discussed in terms of their actual effect on the result rather than listed.

The table below is our reading diagnostic, not the official rubric: it is what we look for when marking a draft cold, expressed as the thing on the page that separates a four from a six. Read the real criterion descriptors in your child's own copy of the Physics guide, in the edition their school teaches. We reference the guide and work from the school's wording; we do not reproduce or supply IB documents or mark schemes.

One structural point about the 3,000-word ceiling. It is enough for a focused report and not enough for a narrative one. Reports that run out of words before evaluation have usually spent 600 of them restating theory that the examiner already knows. Theory earns marks only where it justifies a design decision or explains a discrepancy.

Uncertainties: where Physics investigations in this emirate lose criterion B

Criterion B is the one Abu Dhabi drafts most often under-score, and the reason is almost always the same. Uncertainties are recorded conscientiously in the raw data table and then abandoned. The processed column has no uncertainty attached, the graph has no error bars, the gradient is read as a single number, and the conclusion quotes a result to four significant figures with no range at all.

The repair is mechanical and teachable in one session. Each measured quantity carries an absolute uncertainty from the instrument's resolution or from the spread of repeats, whichever is larger. Fractional uncertainties add through products and quotients and multiply through powers. The processed value therefore carries a calculable uncertainty, which becomes the error bar. Maximum and minimum gradient lines through the error bars give the uncertainty in the gradient, and that uncertainty is what makes the conclusion defensible.

The table below is the practical reference we use on screen. The values in it are typical instrument resolutions a student in a school lab will encounter, offered so a student can sanity-check their own numbers rather than as a substitute for reading the instrument. A stopwatch's resolution is not the uncertainty in a human-timed measurement, and that distinction alone is worth a mark.

Significant figures are the small, cheap version of the same point. A processed value quoted to more figures than its uncertainty justifies is a visible signal that the uncertainty was never carried through, and markers read it that way. Round the uncertainty to one or two significant figures and match the value to it.

Research design: one relationship, one range, one justification

  • One measurable relationship, with a stated range and interval
  • Justify the range and the apparatus, not only the controlled variables
  • Seven or eight distinct values of the independent variable, with repeats at each
  • A plan for an unexpected result before the data is collected

Criterion A rewards a focused research question with a justified method, and the most common failure is breadth. A question asking how temperature affects resistance is three investigations in a sentence. A question asking how the resistance of a 30 cm length of a specified wire varies with temperature between 20 and 80 degrees Celsius, measured at ten-degree intervals with five repeats, is one investigation with a range and a plan.

The second half of criterion A is justification, and students routinely justify what they controlled while skipping why they chose this relationship, this range and this apparatus. A single sentence tying the expected relationship to theory, and another explaining why the chosen range will produce a measurable change, is worth more than a page of apparatus description.

Design is also where originality lives. The criteria do not demand a novel experiment, but a design that twenty classmates have submitted is harder to justify as the student's own thinking. A standard pendulum investigation can still score well if the student narrows it to something specific and defends the narrowing, which is the difference between following a practical sheet and designing an investigation.

We ask three questions before any data is collected. Can you measure the dependent variable to a precision that will show a change across your range? Will you get at least seven or eight distinct values of the independent variable with repeats at each? And what will you do if the relationship is not what you expect, because a null or unexpected result is a legitimate investigation and needs a plan rather than a panic.

05

What the evidence trail looks like across four sessions

Because this task is marked on what is on the page, progress is checkable. The table below is the trail we aim to produce for a student who comes to us with raw data already collected, which is the most common starting point in this emirate. Each row is an artefact a parent can look at, and the marks shown are the kind of movement that is realistic rather than promised.

Two things are worth saying plainly about those numbers. They are illustrative of the structure of the work, not a prediction for any individual student, and we publish no figures about average improvements because we cannot show you the data behind such a claim. What we can show you is the mark we gave each draft and the reason, which is the only honest evidence a tutor can offer.

The trail matters for a second reason. A student who can show a dated sequence from design to final report has strong evidence that the work is their own, which several Abu Dhabi schools now ask for explicitly. Building that record deliberately is better than reconstructing it if anyone asks.

Where the trail stalls, that is information too. A draft that gets the same criterion B mark twice means the propagation has not been understood rather than not been explained, and the session plan changes accordingly. Marking each version is what makes that visible instead of invisible, and it is also what tells a family when to stop buying sessions, because a draft whose weakest criterion is now the student's own rewriting job does not need another hour of tutoring.

06

Linearising, plotting and reading a gradient properly

  • Choose the substitution that makes the relationship linear, and say why
  • Error bars from propagated uncertainties, best-fit line drawn through them
  • Gradient uncertainty from maximum and minimum lines, quoted with units
  • Discuss the intercept: an unexpected one is evidence of a systematic effect

A large share of criterion B sits in one decision: what to plot against what. A relationship that is a curve on the first attempt is usually a straight line under the right substitution, and plotting the straight-line version is both easier to analyse and far easier to defend. A period against length graph is a curve; a period squared against length graph is a line whose gradient has a physical meaning the student can state.

Once the plot is linear, three things follow. Error bars come from the propagated uncertainties, not from a guess. The best-fit line is drawn through the bars and not through the points alone. Maximum and minimum gradient lines, both passing through the bars, give an uncertainty in the gradient that the student can quote alongside it. That final number is the one criterion C needs, because a result without a range cannot be compared with an accepted value in any meaningful way.

Spreadsheet software will supply a trend line and a correlation coefficient at the click of a button, and students reach for both. The correlation coefficient is weak evidence here: a high value on a poorly designed data set proves little, and criterion B is not asking for it. What markers want is a gradient with its uncertainty and an explanation of what the gradient physically represents, including its units.

The intercept is often ignored and frequently the most interesting part of the graph. An intercept that should be at the origin and is not is evidence of a systematic effect, which gives criterion D something quantitative to discuss instead of a list of generic weaknesses. Pointing a student at their own intercept is one of the most productive five minutes in a marking session.

07

What a Physics tutor may and may not do, and the safety line as well

  • A tutor teaches, questions, demonstrates on other numbers and marks against the criteria
  • A tutor never generates, adjusts or tidies the student's data
  • Hazardous work belongs in the school lab under the school's risk assessment
  • Keep dated drafts and raw data files as evidence of authorship

The investigation must be the student's own work. The IB treats a breach as malpractice affecting the whole Diploma, and there are providers in this market selling completed internal assessments. A family buying one is buying a risk to the award rather than a mark, and no amount of deadline pressure makes that a reasonable trade.

A tutor may teach the physics; review a design before data collection; question whether a data set can support a claim; demonstrate uncertainty propagation on numbers the student is not using; mark a draft against the four criteria; point out that an evaluation lists rather than ranks; and check significant figures, units and the word count. A tutor may say honestly that a draft is already strong and needs no further sessions.

A tutor may not produce the work. No data is generated or adjusted on the student's behalf, which in a practical subject is worth stating explicitly: invented or tidied data is a fabrication, not a presentation choice, and markers notice data that is too good. No text is supplied for pasting. No graph is produced for the student from their numbers; they make it and we mark it.

There is also a safety and ethics line specific to the sciences. An investigation involving mains electricity, lasers, radioactive sources, significant heights or chemical hazards needs the school's supervision and risk assessment, and work involving other people as subjects needs informed consent handled as the school requires. We will not help design a home experiment that belongs in a supervised lab, and we say so at the design stage rather than after the fact.

08

Timing, Ramadan, and what the Abu Dhabi market charges

  • Design review eight weeks out, data six weeks out, full draft four weeks out
  • The final fortnight for evaluation and presentation, not new data
  • Ramadan sessions moved to post-iftar rather than paused
  • In-home rates in this market carry a travel premium that buys presence, not precision

Schools set their own internal assessment deadlines and work back from the May session, which puts the Physics investigation late in DP1 or early in DP2, usually within a fortnight of the Mathematics exploration. Counted backwards from the school's deadline, the design review belongs eight weeks out, data collection six weeks out, a full draft four weeks out so a teacher's mark is still actionable, and the final fortnight on evaluation and presentation only.

Ramadan shifts the evening. School days shorten, households reorganise around iftar, and the 5pm slot disappears across the emirate. We move sessions to post-iftar timing rather than pausing, because the Ramadan weeks often sit on the drafting window. Students also sitting Cambridge or Pearson qualifications alongside the Diploma should note that UAE candidates sit the June and November series, and that the Cambridge February and March series is offered in India only.

On cost, the most useful angle for a Physics family is what the travel premium buys, because the in-home market is where Abu Dhabi rates climb. Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 survey puts in-home one-to-one visits at AED 180 to 350 an hour and independent home tutors at AED 200 to 500, against AED 150 to 300 for a qualified subject tutor online and AED 200 to 450 and above for IB specialists. TutorChase publishes AED 270, EdFlik AED 45 to 65, Tutopiya AED 33 to 52, and BartyED AED 650 for a named premium tutor. Those are the providers' own published figures, read in October 2026.

What the premium buys, for this task specifically, is a person in the room and a tutor drawn from whoever is within driving distance on a weekday evening. What it does not buy is a better view of a spreadsheet. Uncertainty propagation and graph work happen on a shared screen either way, which is the honest reason we deliver this online rather than a claim that online is always better. We quote our own fee after the free trial lesson.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Abu Dhabi

Where a student lives changes the practical shape of investigation support, from the evening slot that works to the data a student can realistically collect at home.

Abu Dhabi island and Al Khalidiyah

Short commutes and earlier sessions, from around 4.30pm. Apartment living limits bulky apparatus, so island students more often build investigations around circuits, sound or thermal measurements that need a table and a phone.

Khalifa City and Al Raha

Villa households with space for mechanics apparatus and long drops for kinematics work. Sessions start at 5pm or later after the school run, and IA deadlines across the schools here cluster into the same fortnight.

Al Reem Island

High-rise living, which rules out some experiments and enables others: stairwell and lift data gives genuinely original kinematics and energy investigations with accessible repeat measurements.

Saadiyat Island

Students here often want optics and acoustics investigations connected to the cultural district. Those work well provided the measurement method is pinned down before data collection rather than after.

Yas Island

A high proportion of students travelling for sport, so marked drafts returned between sessions matter more than live hours. Data collection often happens over a weekend and analysis in the following week's session.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City and Shakhbout City

Later slots, usually from 7pm, with MoE-mandated Arabic and Islamic Education sitting alongside DP subjects. Fewer and longer sessions suit these households better than frequent short ones.

Al Shamkha and Al Reef

Long commutes make the in-home market's travel premium a real cost rather than an abstraction. Buying the hour online keeps the whole hour on physics instead of on a drive across the emirate.

Al Ain

Smaller DP cohorts and few Physics specialists locally. Online delivery is the difference between an investigation marked by someone who has moderated the criteria and one marked by the nearest available science tutor.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Abu Dhabi

Island and Al Bateen schools

Established DP Physics cohorts with lab access and fixed IA windows. Students we support here usually arrive with raw data already collected, which is the most productive state for a first session.

  • American Community School of Abu Dhabi
  • Al Mamoura Academy
  • Brighton College Abu Dhabi

Khalifa City, Al Raha and Yas

The heaviest IB load in the emirate and the tightest deadline clustering. Physics and Mathematics internal assessments frequently fall within a fortnight of each other here, which is the real reason families feel overloaded in that term.

  • Al Yasmina Academy
  • Cranleigh Abu Dhabi
  • GEMS World Academy Abu Dhabi

Saadiyat, Al Reem and the mainland communities

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the data, the question and the deadline

Three things get a useful answer: the research question, whatever data exists, and the school's deadline. We will say how many sessions the report needs and whether a Physics specialist is free in that window before any money changes hands.

  2. 02

Free trial on a cold read

The first lesson is free and is spent marking what exists rather than on introductions. The student leaves with a criterion-level mark, a verdict on whether the data set can support a conclusion, and one specific task to complete before the next session.

  3. 03

One criterion per session, with a written mark

Each session targets the weakest criterion and ends with a written mark and reason sent to the family. The student rewrites between sessions. This is what makes progress visible rather than a matter of impressions.

  4. 04

Final pass on figures, units and word count

Significant figures matched to uncertainties, units on every axis and in every table header, graph captions numbered and referenced, sources cited, and the report inside its 3,000-word ceiling. Marks lost here are lost to inattention.

  5. 05

    Decide about the papers

The investigation is twenty per cent of the grade. If the papers are the weaker side we will say so and scope weekly work instead. If they are not, the engagement ends with the report, which is a normal and expected outcome.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

A written mark after every session

Each session ends with a criterion, a mark out of six and the reason, sent to the family. A parent can see what changed between draft two and draft three instead of taking a tutor's word for it.

Quantitative work, not encouragement

Most recoverable marks in an Abu Dhabi Physics draft sit in propagated uncertainties, error bars and gradient uncertainty. Sessions are spent on those calculations with the student's own numbers on screen, not on general revision advice.

An honest early verdict on the data

If eight points across a narrow range cannot support a conclusion, we say so in week one while there is still time to collect more. That verdict is uncomfortable and far more valuable than help with the writing in week four.

Design review before measurement

The cheapest intervention in the whole task is one session before any data is collected. Families who book it rarely need the expensive rescue session, and we would rather sell the first than the second.

Academic honesty and lab safety stated

No data is generated or adjusted for a student, no text supplied, and no hazardous home experiment designed around a school's supervision. These are the lines that separate tutoring from the finished-IA trade operating in this market.

Specialists, not proximity

Physics investigation marking is a specialism, and in Al Ain or the outer communities there may be nobody local who has done it. Online delivery means your child works with someone who has, on Gulf Standard Time, with no travel premium on the hour.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

How many marks is the IB Physics internal assessment worth?+

Twenty-four marks, split equally across four criteria worth six each: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. The report has a 3,000-word ceiling and counts for twenty per cent of the final Physics grade at both Standard and Higher Level, with the other eighty per cent sat in written papers. The school marks it and the IB moderates externally. The equal weighting matters strategically: a student who writes a superb method and a two-paragraph evaluation is leaving a quarter of the available mark untouched.

Why did my child's Physics investigation lose marks on data analysis?+

Almost always because uncertainties were recorded and then abandoned. The raw data table carries them, the processed column does not, the graph has no error bars, and the gradient is read as a single number with no range. Criterion B wants the uncertainties propagated through the calculation, plotted as error bars, and converted into a gradient uncertainty using maximum and minimum lines. That sequence is mechanical and teachable in about one session, and it is where most of the recoverable marks in a competent draft are sitting.

How do you work out the uncertainty in a gradient?+

Draw the steepest and shallowest lines that still pass through the error bars on your plotted points, find the gradient of each, and take half the difference between them as the uncertainty in your best-fit gradient. Quote the gradient with that uncertainty and with its units. This is what lets the conclusion say something defensible, because a result with a range can be compared with an accepted value, while a bare number cannot. A spreadsheet trend line will not give you this, which is why the manual construction still matters.

Can a tutor help design the experiment before my child collects data?+

Yes, and it is the single most useful session in the task. A design review narrows the research question to one measurable relationship with a stated range, checks that the dependent variable can be measured precisely enough to show a change, confirms there will be seven or eight distinct values with repeats, and identifies the instrumental uncertainties in advance. The student then takes the design to their own teacher for approval. A weak design cannot be rescued by analysis, so an hour here routinely saves three later.

Is a simulation or secondary data acceptable for the Physics IA?+

It is permitted, and sometimes it is the only route to a topic a school cannot support in its lab, but the design has to work considerably harder. The model's assumptions, the reliability of the source and the justification for the parameter ranges all have to be argued under criterion A, and criterion D has to evaluate the model rather than the apparatus. We treat these as higher-risk routes and tell students so before they commit, because a weak simulation investigation is harder to rescue than a weak practical one.

What should go in the evaluation to score well on criterion D?+

Weaknesses ranked by their actual effect on the result, with improvements that would change the number rather than tidy the method. A list saying the thermometer was imprecise, the room was draughty and more repeats would help scores poorly because nothing is quantified. An evaluation that identifies the dominant uncertainty, estimates how much of the discrepancy it explains, and proposes a specific change that would reduce it scores well. An unexpected intercept on the graph is often the best available evidence of a systematic effect worth discussing here.

My child has eight data points and no repeats. Is that enough?+

Probably not, and finding out now is worth a great deal more than finding out after the draft is written. Eight distinct values is around the minimum, and without repeats there is no way to estimate the spread of readings, which means the uncertainties will come only from instrument resolution and will understate reality. If there is still lab access, the right move is a second collection round with repeats at each value. If there is not, the report has to be honest about the limitation, and criterion D is where that honesty earns marks.

Are IB Physics IA sessions online or in person in Abu Dhabi?+

Online, one-to-one over live video. IB Gram does not send tutors to addresses anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. For this task the shared screen is genuinely the right tool: the student's spreadsheet, the graph being rebuilt with error bars, and the criteria are all visible at once, and the tutor can recalculate a propagated uncertainty live while the student watches the gradient uncertainty change. No part of that improves by adding a drive across the emirate.

What does Physics IA support cost in the Abu Dhabi market?+

Published UAE figures run AED 33 to 65 an hour at the budget online tier, AED 150 to 300 for a qualified subject tutor online, AED 200 to 450 and above for IB specialists, and AED 180 to 500 for in-home visits where the travel premium applies. One provider publishes AED 650 for a named tutor. Those are the providers' own numbers, read in October 2026, not ours. Most investigation work is three to four sessions, so the total is closer to a month of tutoring than a term. We quote after the free trial.

Can a tutor check my child's data for errors?+

A tutor can question it, which is different from correcting it. We will ask whether a reading that breaks the pattern was recorded or transcribed wrongly, whether the instrument drifted during the run, and whether an outlier should be investigated or discussed. What we will not do is alter the numbers or suggest which ones to quietly drop. Data must be reported as collected, and anomalies belong in the analysis and evaluation where they earn marks. Invented or tidied data is a fabrication and markers do notice data that is too clean.

How long should the Physics investigation report be?+

Up to 3,000 words, and that is a ceiling rather than a target. The commonest structural fault we see is a report that spends six hundred words restating textbook theory and then runs out of space for evaluation, which is worth a quarter of the mark. Theory earns credit only where it justifies a design decision or explains a discrepancy. Data tables, graph captions and references are handled according to your school's guidance, so check how yours counts them before planning the final draft.

When should an Abu Dhabi DP Physics student start the investigation?+

Design review around eight weeks before the school's deadline, data collection six weeks out, and a full draft four weeks out so a teacher's mark still leaves time to act. Schools in the emirate set their own dates but work back from the May session, which usually puts the Physics investigation late in DP1 or early in DP2, often within a fortnight of the Mathematics exploration. That collision is the real reason the term feels overloaded, and it is manageable if the design work happens before it starts.

Does my child need to investigate higher level content at HL?+

No. The investigation specification and its four criteria are identical at Standard and Higher Level, and nothing requires HL students to draw their topic from additional higher level material. In practice an HL student choosing from that content often ends up with a more interesting relationship and a stronger claim to having designed something themselves, which helps under criterion A. But an SL-level topic investigated rigorously will out-score an HL-level topic investigated carelessly, every time.

How are Physics sessions scheduled around Ramadan in Abu Dhabi?+

They shift later rather than stopping. School hours shorten, households reorganise around iftar, and the usual 5pm slot stops working, so we schedule post-iftar sessions instead. Continuity matters in this task because the Ramadan weeks frequently overlap the drafting window, and a month's pause lands on the exact fortnight when a marked draft is most useful. For a student who is fasting, two shorter sessions a week with marked drafts in between usually works better than one long evening session.

What if no Physics specialist is free before our deadline?+

We say so instead of substituting a general science tutor. Investigation marking against the four criteria is a specific skill, and demand concentrates in the fortnights when Abu Dhabi schools' deadlines cluster. If nobody suitable is free in your window, the realistic options are a later slot with written draft feedback in the meantime, a tutor outside the emirate on a compatible evening schedule, or the school's own clinic hours with a specific list of what to ask. An honest no beats a poor match on a graded component.

Bring the data and the teacher's comment

If your child has collected data, the first useful step is a cold mark on what exists. Send the research question, the spreadsheet and whatever the teacher has written, and the free trial lesson will produce a criterion-level mark, an honest verdict on whether the data can support a conclusion, and one specific task to do next. You will be able to see what changes between that draft and the next one, because every session ends with a mark and a reason in writing. If the draft is already strong, we will tell you that and you can stop there.
