IB DP Extended Essay Home Tutor in Abu Dhabi

Before hiring an IB DP Extended Essay home tutor in Abu Dhabi, it is worth knowing that your child already has a supervisor at school, for nothing, with a defined number of hours. Paid help is worth buying for a short list of specific gaps and is wasted on everything else. This page puts the AED market bands on the page, says which weeks of the project repay paid hours, and names what no fee can legitimately buy. Lessons run online, one-to-one, over live video.

  • Market AED bands published, attributed, with the month of the source stated
  • The school supervisor's free hours mapped against what paid hours should add
  • Priced by block against a named deliverable, not by open-ended weekly hours

IB & IGCSE in Abu Dhabi

What paid Extended Essay help is worth, and what you already have for free

The Extended Essay is an independent 4,000-word research piece in a registered subject, written across the two Diploma years, with a school supervisor assigned to it. That supervisor is free. The IB sets a recommended allocation of supervision time — commonly three to five hours in total, including the concluding viva voce — and three mandatory reflection sessions recorded on the Reflections on Planning and Progress Form. Confirm the current figures with your DP coordinator, because they are set in the IB's own guide.

That is the context any paid quote should be read against. A family in Abu Dhabi is not buying supervision; it exists already. They are buying cover for the gaps between those few hours: a research question that will not work, a subject the supervisor does not read, a student who has written 5,800 words and cannot cut, a term where nothing happened and the deadline is six weeks out.

Market rates are published by comparison sites rather than by tutors, so here they are. Rate comparisons compiled in October 2026 put qualified subject tutors working online at roughly AED 150 to AED 300 an hour, in-home one-to-one at AED 180 to AED 350 once travel is inside the fee, and IB specialists at AED 200 to AED 450 and above, with premium named tutors advertised as high as AED 650. Monthly packages appear from about AED 799 for eight online sessions. Those are market figures, not IB Gram prices.

The Extended Essay is unusual in that the useful spend is concentrated in a few short windows rather than spread evenly. Two hours at the research-question stage are worth more than ten hours of drafting support, because a question that cannot be answered in the word limit cannot be rescued by better writing. Most families discover this in reverse order, which is why the bill ends up where it does.

There is also a hard ceiling on what money can legitimately buy. The essay must be the student's own work, the reflections must be their own, and the viva voce is a conversation they have unaided. Criterion E, engagement, carries marks of its own and is assessed through those reflections. A mentor who offers to supply text is selling a risk that lands on the candidate rather than on themselves.

Delivery in the UAE is online, one-to-one, over live video on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not run home visits in Abu Dhabi and sends no tutor to an address in this emirate; in-home tutoring is a service we offer only in India. For a research project that is a convenience rather than a compromise: the work is documents, and documents are better shared on a screen than carried to a villa.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Extended Essay costs vary with where the student is in the Diploma and with what their school has already provided. These notes describe the three positions Abu Dhabi families actually ring from.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

The Extended Essay is a core requirement alongside Theory of Knowledge and CAS, registered in one subject, capped at 4,000 words, and graded A to E. It combines with TOK to contribute points to the Diploma total and carries a failing condition of its own at the lowest grade. Confirm the current award conditions with your DP coordinator rather than from any third party.

Abu Dhabi schools set internal Extended Essay deadlines well before the IB submission date, often with a first full draft due in the first term of DP2. Those internal dates are what a spend plan should be built around, because they are the ones that actually constrain the work. Ask the coordinator for the school's written timeline in DP1; families who have it spend materially less than those who improvise.

DP2Ages 17-18 · Second Diploma year

Students already in difficulty

The most common paid enquiry: a student with a research question that does not work, or a draft that is too long, too descriptive, or in a subject nobody at home can read. Here the money buys triage, and triage is cheap compared with drafting support. One or two hours of honest diagnosis usually replaces a month of expensive flailing.

In this emirate the DP2 crunch is sharpened by internal assessment deadlines landing in the same weeks across several subjects. The practical consequence is that the hours bought in that window cost more in attention than in dirhams, and that the cheapest version of this project is the one planned in DP1 and merely supported in DP2.

TransfersAges 16-18 · Entering DP1 or DP2

Students arriving mid-Diploma

A student joining an Abu Dhabi school mid-course may arrive with an essay registered in a subject the new school teaches differently, or with no registration at all. The first paid hour should go on establishing what the new school requires and by when, not on content, because the requirements decide everything that follows.

Mid-course arrivals are routine in Abu Dhabi, where employment postings run to two and three years. Transfers are also the group most likely to be quoted for a large block of hours they do not need, because the apparent crisis is administrative. Get the school's written timeline first and the quote will usually shrink.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

What an Extended Essay costs to support depends heavily on the subject it is registered in, because some essays need data the student cannot easily obtain. The subjects below are the ones Abu Dhabi families most often register in, with the cost consequence named.

Extended Essay

Core · 4,000 words · graded A to E

An independent research piece in a registered subject with a school supervisor, three reflection sessions on the RPPF, and a concluding viva voce. Marks are lost on research questions too broad to answer, description where critical analysis was required, and presentation errors in referencing that cost cheap marks.

Biology

Essay registered in Biology

Among the most expensive essays to support, because a strong one usually wants primary data and school laboratory time is finite. Where the school cannot provide access, a well-designed secondary-data essay is cheaper and often scores better than a thin experiment.

Chemistry

Essay registered in Chemistry

Same constraint as Biology with tighter safety limits on what a school will allow. The costly failure here is a question that requires equipment nobody has, discovered two months in. One hour spent checking feasibility against the school's actual kit is the best-value hour in the project.

Economics

Essay registered in Economics

Popular in this emirate and relatively cheap to support, because the data is public. The common and expensive error is a question about the whole UAE economy rather than a narrow, answerable one, which no amount of drafting help can repair later.

Business Management

Essay registered in Business Management

Attractive because local company material feels accessible, and risky because primary interviews often require permissions that take weeks. Where interviews are in Arabic, translation and transcription add real hours that nobody budgets for at the start.

Psychology

Essay registered in Psychology

Human participants mean ethical approval, consent and school permission, and in a school setting that paperwork alone can run to weeks. Most cost overruns in Psychology essays are administrative rather than intellectual, which is why the feasibility check matters more here than elsewhere.

History

Essay registered in History

Cheap to support when the sources are accessible and expensive when they are not. Essays on regional history can require Arabic-language sources, and a student without the language either narrows the question or budgets for translation; both are decisions to take in DP1.

English A

Essay registered in English

Usually the least expensive essay to support, because the text is the data. The spend concentrates entirely at the research-question stage, where a question about a theme rather than about a specific argument produces 4,000 words of description.

Mathematics

Essay registered in Mathematics

Low in materials cost and high in supervisor scarcity, since few school supervisors are comfortable with the subject at this level. This is the clearest case for paid subject-specific mentoring, because the gap is expertise rather than effort.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways of buying Extended Essay support, priced differently and suited to different problems. The one to avoid is the open-ended weekly arrangement nobody reviews.

Feasibility and research-question block

Two sessions in DP1, before anything is researched. The first tests the proposed question against the word limit, the available data and the school's actual resources. The second narrows it until it can be answered and sets the method. This is the cheapest block in the project and the one that prevents the expensive ones.

  • The question rewritten until it is answerable in 4,000 words
  • A feasibility check against school laboratory, library and permission realities
  • A written method the supervisor can approve without a rethink

Draft diagnosis, priced per draft

A single session on a complete draft, charged as one block rather than as an ongoing commitment. The output is a written diagnosis: where description stands in for analysis, where the argument does not answer the question, which referencing errors are costing presentation marks, and what to cut to reach the word limit.

  • Annotated against the published criteria, with the criterion named
  • A cut list for essays over the word limit, by section
  • No rewriting: the revisions are the student's own work

Subject mentoring where the school has no specialist

The one genuinely unavoidable paid cost: a mentor who reads the subject when the assigned supervisor does not. Common for essays registered in Mathematics, Psychology and less widely taught subjects. Priced at the specialist band and usually needed for three or four sessions across the project rather than weekly.

  • Subject-level feedback the school supervisor cannot provide
  • Reality checks on method and on the literature being used
  • Coordination with the supervisor's requirements, not around them

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Abu Dhabi

01

Who provides what, and which of it is already paid for

The first step in controlling Extended Essay cost is a map of what exists for free. The school assigns a supervisor, with a recommended allocation of supervision hours including the concluding viva voce, and runs three mandatory reflection sessions recorded on the Reflections on Planning and Progress Form. The school library provides database access. The DP coordinator provides the internal deadlines. None of that is billed.

What the free provision reliably covers is process: registration, deadlines, the reflection conversations, approval of the research question, and a final interview. What it covers unevenly is subject expertise, because a supervisor is assigned from available staff and may not read the subject the student has chosen at the level the essay needs. That unevenness is the honest reason to buy anything.

The second honest reason is capacity. A supervisor with several essays and a full teaching timetable gives each student a few hours across two years. A student who needs more contact than that is not being short-changed; they are using more than the system allocates. Paid hours top that up, and they are only worth their price where they do something the supervisor is not able to do.

The third is diagnosis under time pressure. A supervisor who sees a draft three weeks before an internal deadline is working inside the same constraint as everyone else. An outside reader with a clear hour and the published criteria open can produce a written diagnosis quickly, and that single document is often the whole of what a family actually needed to buy.

02

The spend calendar: which weeks repay paid hours

Extended Essay money is badly distributed in most families, with little spent early and a great deal spent late. The project rewards the opposite pattern, because early errors compound and late help can only tidy. A spend calendar built in DP1 typically costs less than half of one assembled in a panic during DP2.

The early windows are cheap and decisive. Choosing the subject to register in, testing the research question for answerability, and checking feasibility against the school's actual resources are two or three hours of work that determine the next twelve months. At the qualified band of AED 150 to AED 300 that is a few hundred dirhams, and it is the only spend that reliably prevents other spend.

The middle of the project generally does not repay paid hours at all. Reading, note-taking, data collection and first drafting are the student's own work and the supervisor's territory, and a weekly paid session through this period mostly buys company. Families on standing arrangements usually discover they paid most in the months where least was happening.

The late windows repay a specific kind of help: one diagnosis on a complete draft, and one session on cutting to the word limit. Both are discrete, both produce a document, and both are better bought as single blocks than as a monthly commitment. The figures below are arithmetic at published market bands rather than an IB Gram price list, and they assume the mid-band rate.

What makes an Abu Dhabi Extended Essay cost more than the same essay elsewhere

Some of the cost drivers in this project are local, and they are the ones nobody warns families about. The first is primary data. An essay that needs human participants requires consent and school permission, and in an Abu Dhabi school that paperwork can run to weeks rather than days. The delay is not the school being obstructive; it is a reasonable process meeting a student timetable that did not allow for it.

The second is language. Essays on regional subjects frequently rest on Arabic-language sources, interviews or documents. A student without the language either narrows the question or pays for translation and transcription, and the second option is real money and real time. The decision belongs in DP1, where it costs a conversation, rather than in DP2, where it costs the schedule.

The third is laboratory access. School laboratory time is finite everywhere, and a science essay requiring repeated trials competes with teaching. Where access is limited, the cheaper and often better-scoring route is a well-designed secondary-data essay, which is also the one most students resist because an experiment sounds more impressive.

The fourth is calendar compression. Abu Dhabi schools set internal draft deadlines earlier than the IB submission date, and those deadlines land in the same weeks as internal assessments in other subjects. Paid hours in that window cost more in attention than in money, and the way to avoid them is to put the question and feasibility work a year earlier.

ABU DHABI-SPECIFIC COST DRIVERS BY REGISTERED SUBJECT — AND THE CHEAPER ROUTE
Essay typeThe local constraintWhat it adds in time or moneyThe cheaper route
Psychology with human participantsConsent and school permission processesOften several weeks before any data existsA literature-based question with the same analytical demand
Biology or Chemistry with experimentsFinite school laboratory time and safety limitsTrials squeezed into fewer sessions than the design needsA secondary-data question using published datasets

04

The research question is the cheapest thing to fix and the dearest to get wrong

Nearly every expensive Extended Essay began with a question that could not be answered in 4,000 words. A question about a whole national economy, a whole author, a whole historical period or a whole biological process does not fail because the student wrote badly. It fails because no 4,000-word answer exists, so the essay becomes a survey and the criteria reward analysis.

Diagnosing that takes about twenty minutes with someone who reads the subject, and the test is mechanical: state the question, then state what the conclusion would look like. If the conclusion is a summary of what is known rather than a judgement the student has reached, the question is too broad. Narrow it until the conclusion is contestable and the whole project becomes cheaper.

The cost of getting this wrong rises sharply with time. In DP1, a rethink is one session. After three months of reading, it costs the reading. After a first full draft, it costs the draft, and at that point families start buying hours at specialist rates in the worst week of DP2 to rescue something structurally unsound. This is the single clearest place where a few hundred dirhams early replaces a few thousand late.

A supervisor approves the question, and approval is not the same as endurance. A question can be approved, perfectly respectable, and still prove unanswerable once the student is inside it. That is a normal research experience rather than a failure by anyone, and it is exactly the moment an outside subject reader earns their fee, because changing course early is cheaper than persevering.

05

Three pricing models, and the trap in each

Extended Essay help is sold three ways in this market and the model matters more than the rate. By the hour, by the draft, or by the project. Each suits a different problem and each has a predictable failure, and a family that picks the model deliberately usually pays considerably less than one that accepts whatever is offered first.

By the hour is the most flexible and the easiest to overspend on, because hours accumulate in the months when nothing needs an adult. It suits the feasibility and question stage, where two focused hours do the work, and it suits specialist mentoring in a subject the school cannot cover. It does not suit the long middle of the project.

By the draft is the model most families should use for the late stages: one fixed fee for a complete read and a written diagnosis against the criteria. The trap is scope. Agree in advance whether that includes a second read after revision, and what happens if the draft arrives at twice the word limit, because both change the work substantially.

By the project — a single fee for support from question to submission — looks tidy and carries the most risk. It bundles the months that need nothing with the hours that need someone, and it creates an incentive to be involved in the writing itself, which is exactly where the honesty line sits. Where a project fee is quoted, ask what it excludes and how the hours are distributed across the calendar.

HOW EXTENDED ESSAY SUPPORT IS PRICED — WHAT EACH MODEL SUITS AND WHERE IT GOES WRONG
Pricing modelWhat it suitsThe predictable trapWhat to agree in writing first
By the hourQuestion testing, feasibility, specialist subject gapsHours accumulate through months that needed nobodyA named deliverable per session and a review point after two
By the draftA complete draft needing diagnosis against the criteriaScope: second reads and over-length draftsWhether a re-read is included and the maximum word count covered
By the projectRarely anything; it bundles idle months with busy hoursPressure towards involvement in the writing itselfExactly what is excluded, and how hours map to the calendar
Monthly packageStudents needing steady contact for other reasonsPaying in the months with no deliverableWhether unused sessions carry over, and the exit terms
Proofreading by the pageFormatting and reference checking at mostEdits that cross into rewriting the student's proseThat changes are suggested, not made, and nothing is rewritten
06

The cheap marks: reflections, referencing and the word limit

  • Reflections are assessed; a rushed RPPF entry costs real marks
  • A consistent citation style and bibliography are free presentation marks
  • Nothing beyond the 4,000-word limit is guaranteed to be read
  • Plan word budgets per section before drafting rather than cutting afterwards
  • Audit these three before buying any hours; they often outperform a paid session

Some Extended Essay marks cost nothing and are routinely left on the table. The three reflection sessions are recorded on the Reflections on Planning and Progress Form, and engagement is assessed through them as a criterion in its own right. Students treat the form as administration, write it in fifteen minutes the night before, and lose marks that required only honesty and a little detail about what actually changed in their thinking.

Referencing and presentation are the same story. A consistent citation style, a properly formatted bibliography, correct use of appendices and a title page that follows the school's instructions are worth marks under presentation, and they are the only marks in the project that can be secured with no intellectual effort whatsoever. Students lose them while paying for help with analysis.

The word limit is the third. Examiners are not required to read beyond 4,000 words, so anything past that point is work the student did for nothing, and a conclusion sitting at 4,300 words may simply not count. Cutting is a skill and it is worth one paid session if a draft is badly over, but the cheaper route is to plan section word budgets before drafting.

The useful habit for a family is to audit these three things before buying anything else. Read the RPPF entries; if they contain no specific change of direction, they are costing marks. Check the bibliography for consistency. Check the word count including whatever the current guide says counts towards it. Those three checks take an evening and cost nothing, and they frequently recover more than the first paid session would.

07

What no fee can buy, at any price

There is a firm limit to what paid help can legitimately do here, and it is worth stating in commercial terms as well as ethical ones. The essay must be the student's own work. The reflections must record the student's own thinking. The viva voce is a conversation they hold unaided with their supervisor, and a candidate who did not do the work tends to reveal it there within a few minutes.

A mentor may test a research question, check feasibility, explain a criterion, recommend where to look, read a draft and name what is not working, explain why a paragraph describes rather than analyses, and teach the student to cut. A mentor may not supply text, restructure a draft into a different essay, rewrite prose to a level the student cannot reach, or produce the reflections. We decline those requests, including from families who ask kindly and close to a deadline.

Text generated by an AI tool belongs in the same category for submitted work. In an Extended Essay it is also unusually easy to detect, because the references are plausible and frequently wrong, and a fabricated citation in a bibliography is a conspicuous problem in a project marked partly on the handling of sources. A mentor's realistic contribution here is teaching a student to verify every reference they cite.

One further caution, since this is a page about money: there are services in this market selling completed assessed work, with prices advertised openly. Buying one is an academic-integrity breach that puts the candidate's diploma at risk, not the seller's business. No part of this page should be read as an offer of that kind, and a provider who implies they can take the project off your hands is quoting for something nobody can legitimately sell.

08

Online mentoring against an in-home tutor for a research project

In-home tutoring exists here and families often assume it is the premium option. Published market comparisons put in-home one-to-one at roughly AED 180 to AED 350 an hour with travel inside the fee, against AED 150 to AED 300 for a qualified subject tutor working online and AED 200 to AED 450 or more for an IB specialist. Those are market figures from published rate tables rather than IB Gram prices.

IB Gram does not sell in-home visits in the UAE. We do not send a tutor to an Abu Dhabi address and we run no home visits in Abu Dhabi; in-home tuition is a service we offer only in India. Lessons here are one-to-one online, over live video, on Gulf Standard Time, and for this project that is a practical advantage rather than a concession.

The Extended Essay is a documents project. The work is a research question on a shared document, a draft annotated in front of both people with the criteria open alongside, a bibliography checked line by line, and a cut list built live. A tutor sitting in your living room reads the same screen you would have shared, having charged for the drive and taken a 90-minute minimum booking to justify it.

Supervisor scarcity is the other half of the argument. The whole reason to buy mentoring is usually that nobody at the school reads the subject at this level, and the in-home pool within reach of your community is smaller than the school's staff room. For an essay registered in Mathematics or Psychology, the local option may not exist at any price while the online one does.

Where we tutor

What an Extended Essay costs by where you live in Abu Dhabi

In an in-home market the address is part of the price, because travel sits inside the fee. For a research project the location also decides how easily primary data can be collected. Each note takes both.

Al Bateen and Al Khalidiyah

Central, close to several Diploma schools, and the easiest part of the emirate for a student to reach libraries and institutions in person. In-home quotes here carry the lowest travel loading, which is why the local market is busiest in these districts.

Saadiyat Island

Cultural institutions within reach, which genuinely helps essays registered in Visual Arts or History where a specific object or collection is the subject. Early school finishes also make a weekday session viable rather than theoretical.

Al Reem Island

Late-afternoon bridge traffic means an in-home tutor arriving for 17:00 has often spent half an hour getting there, and that time is in the fee somewhere. For document work the online alternative removes the loading entirely.

Khalifa City

Villa communities with long school runs, so in-home quotes carry the heaviest travel component in the emirate. Weekend blocks work better here than weekday hours, and a 90-minute block is the right length for drafting feedback.

Al Raha Beach and Al Raha Gardens

Compound living with crowded after-school schedules. Families here most often buy short blocks timed to the school's internal draft deadlines rather than a standing weekly slot, which is usually the cheaper pattern anyway.

Yas Island and West Yas

Longer internal distances than they appear and relatively few subject specialists nearby. For a Mathematics or Psychology essay the local in-home pool may contain nobody who reads the subject at this level.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City and Shakhbout City

Mainland communities where in-home availability for specialist subjects thins out quickly. The realistic comparison here is online against nothing, which makes the delivery table below the relevant one.

Al Reef and Al Falah

Furthest from the established school clusters and the longest travel loadings in any visiting quote. Online delivery means a family here pays what a Saadiyat family pays, which is not true of any in-home arrangement.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Get the school's timeline before spending anything

Ask the DP coordinator for the internal Extended Essay deadlines, the supervisor's name and subject, and the dates of the three reflection sessions. Half the quotes families receive shrink once that document exists, because the apparent crisis is usually a calendar problem.

  2. 02

Free trial lesson used as a feasibility check

The trial is free, needs no card and carries no obligation. It tests the research question against the word limit, the available data and the school's actual resources, and you leave with the question rewritten and a written note on feasibility whether or not you continue.

  3. 03

    Choose the pricing model deliberately

Hourly for question and feasibility work, per draft for diagnosis, specialist mentoring where the school has no subject cover. Agree in writing what a draft read includes, whether a second read is covered and the maximum word count. Decline project fees unless the exclusions are written down.

  4. 04

    Buy against a named deliverable

Every block has an output: a rewritten question, a feasibility note, an annotated draft with the criteria named, a cut list by section. Lessons run online, one-to-one, over live video on Gulf Standard Time, and the document lands in a shared folder you keep.

  5. 05

Stop when the deliverable is done

There is no standing arrangement to cancel. The months of reading and drafting do not need paid hours, and we will say so rather than filling them. Families who follow the spend calendar on this page typically buy four to six sessions across the whole project.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

We tell you what the school already gives you free

A supervisor with an allocated number of hours, three reflection sessions, library access and the internal deadlines. Paid help is only worth its rate where it does something that provision cannot, and naming that boundary costs us hours we could otherwise bill.

Market numbers on the page, attributed

AED bands from published rate comparisons with the month stated, so a quote can be read against something. Three of six competitor pages reviewed for this market publish no price at all, and the two that do quote in US dollars.

Spend concentrated where it works

Two hours at the research-question stage outperform ten at drafting, because a question that cannot be answered in 4,000 words cannot be rescued by better writing. The spend calendar on this page is the plan we actually recommend.

Priced per deliverable, not per month

Each block produces a document: a rewritten question, a feasibility note, an annotated draft, a cut list. There is no standing weekly arrangement, because the long middle of this project genuinely does not need one.

A published line on what cannot be bought

The essay, the reflections and the viva voce are the student's own. We do not supply text, restructure drafts into different essays or produce reflections, and we decline when asked. Services selling completed assessed work put the candidate's diploma at risk, not their own.

Online, one-to-one, stated before booking

Every UAE lesson runs over live video on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send a tutor to an Abu Dhabi address and runs no home visits in this emirate; that service exists only in India. For a documents project the shared screen is the better room anyway.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

If the school already provides a supervisor, what am I paying an Extended Essay mentor for?+

For the gaps the free provision does not cover. A supervisor has an allocated number of hours across two years, including the concluding viva voce, and is assigned from available staff, so they may not read your child's registered subject at the level the essay needs. Paid hours are worth their rate for three things: testing whether a research question is answerable, subject expertise the school cannot supply, and a written diagnosis of a complete draft. For everything else the supervisor is the right person and is already paid for.

What does Extended Essay help cost per hour in Abu Dhabi?+

Published rate comparisons compiled in October 2026 put qualified subject tutors working online at roughly AED 150 to AED 300 an hour, in-home one-to-one at AED 180 to AED 350 with travel inside the fee, and IB specialists at AED 200 to AED 450 or more, with premium named tutors advertised up to AED 650. Monthly online packages appear from about AED 799 for eight sessions. Those are market bands from published tables rather than IB Gram prices, and they are the benchmark any quote you receive should be read against.

Which stage of the Extended Essay is actually worth paying for?+

The research-question stage, by a wide margin. Two hours spent testing whether a question can be answered in 4,000 words with the data and resources actually available will often save a month of expensive rescue work later. After that, one session diagnosing a complete draft and, if needed, one on cutting to the word limit. The long middle — reading, note-taking, data collection, first drafting — is the student's own work and rarely repays a standing paid arrangement.

Our son's draft is 5,900 words. How much does cutting cost?+

Usually one session, because cutting is a skill rather than a labour: the work is identifying which sections are description that the criteria do not reward, which quotations can be summarised, and what belongs in an appendix under the current guide's rules. At market bands that is AED 150 to AED 450. Worth knowing before you pay: examiners are not required to read beyond 4,000 words, so a conclusion sitting past the limit may simply not count, which makes this a high-return single session.

Is a project fee from question to submission good value?+

Rarely, for two reasons. It bundles months that genuinely need nobody with the few hours that need someone, so you pay through the idle period. And a fixed fee tied to a finished essay creates pressure towards involvement in the writing itself, which is where the academic-honesty line sits and where the risk falls on your child rather than the provider. If a project fee is quoted, ask in writing what it excludes and how the hours are distributed across the calendar.

Does registering the essay in a science cost more to support in Abu Dhabi?+

Often yes, and the reason is access rather than difficulty. School laboratory time is finite and competes with teaching, safety limits what a student may attempt, and an experimental design needing repeated trials may not fit the slots available. Where that is the position, a well-designed secondary-data essay using published datasets is cheaper and frequently scores better than a thin experiment. The feasibility check against the school's actual equipment is one hour and prevents the most expensive failure in this project.

My daughter wants to interview a local company. What does that add?+

Time, permissions and possibly translation. Company access requires someone's agreement and often several weeks of waiting, and interviews conducted in Arabic need transcription and translation, which is real money and real hours that nobody budgets at the start. For most Business Management questions, published reports and filings are a stronger evidence base than one interview, because they can be analysed rather than merely quoted. Make that decision in the first Diploma year, where it costs a conversation.

Do the reflection sessions and the RPPF really carry marks?+

Yes. Engagement is assessed through the three mandatory reflection sessions recorded on the Reflections on Planning and Progress Form, and it is a criterion in its own right within the total. Students treat the form as administration and write it the night before, losing marks that needed only honesty and some specific detail about what changed in their thinking and why. Confirm the current mark allocation with your DP coordinator. Reading your child's RPPF entries is free and frequently recovers more than a paid session would.

Can a mentor fix a research question that the supervisor already approved?+

Yes, and approval is not the same thing as durability. A question can be entirely respectable, approved in good faith, and still prove unanswerable in 4,000 words once the student is inside the reading. That is an ordinary research experience, not a failure by the supervisor. The test is mechanical: state the question, then state what the conclusion would look like. If the conclusion is a summary of existing knowledge rather than a judgement the student reached, narrow the question before another month is spent.

Does the Extended Essay affect the UAE Ministry of Education equivalency process?+

Equivalency requirements are set by the Ministry and differ by curriculum, and for the British track the published rule is five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that count, plus one A-Level at E or two AS-Levels. For the IB no points threshold should be taken from any third-party page; verify on moe.gov.ae or with the attestation authority. IB Gram does not perform or guarantee equivalency, and no tutoring is required for it.

Does a mentor need a MoHRE permit to charge for Extended Essay help in Abu Dhabi?+

Individuals providing private tuition in the UAE need the MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years, with eligible applicants including registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents and university students. Those operating without one are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published, so no amount should be quoted to you. Ask any mentor whether they hold it before money changes hands.

Can we pay someone to proofread the essay before submission?+

Advice on grammar, consistency and formatting is legitimate; making the changes is not. The practical line is that errors may be pointed out and corrections must be the student's own, because prose rewritten to a level the candidate could not produce is no longer their work. In a project assessed partly on presentation and the handling of sources, the useful version of this service is a consistency check on the bibliography and citation style, which costs little and secures marks that need no intellectual effort.

Does IB Gram send an Extended Essay tutor to our home in Abu Dhabi, and would that cost more?+

No. IB Gram does not run home visits in Abu Dhabi or anywhere in the UAE, and no tutor is sent to an address here; in-home tutoring is a service we offer only in India. Published market comparisons put in-home visits at AED 180 to AED 350 an hour against AED 150 to AED 300 for a qualified online tutor, with the gap largely travel. For this project the bigger issue is subject match: the local pool for a Mathematics or Psychology essay may contain nobody who reads it at this level.

How many sessions do Abu Dhabi families usually end up buying for the Extended Essay?+

Families who follow a spend calendar typically buy four to six sessions across the whole project: two on the research question, one on feasibility, one or two diagnosing drafts, and one on cutting to the word limit. Families who start in the second term of the final year and buy weekly hours spend several times that and get less, because the decisive errors were made a year earlier. The cheapest version of this project is the one planned early and merely supported late.

Is it worth paying for help to move an Extended Essay grade by one letter?+

That arithmetic is yours, and nobody can honestly promise a letter. What can be said is where the effect is clearest: a question that was unanswerable becoming answerable, a draft that described becoming a draft that argues, and free presentation and reflection marks being collected rather than left. Those are structural changes rather than polish. Expect a reasoned view on what the draft is currently missing against the published criteria, and treat any specific grade promise as a reason to look elsewhere.

Get the school's timeline, then buy only the hours that work

If you are pricing an IB DP Extended Essay home tutor in Abu Dhabi, start with two free things: the school's written Extended Essay timeline, and your child's own RPPF entries. Then take the free trial lesson, which costs nothing, needs no card and carries no obligation, and use it as a feasibility check rather than an introduction — you leave with the research question rewritten and a written note on whether it can be answered in 4,000 words. From there, buy against named deliverables: a diagnosis, a cut list, a subject reality check. Lessons run online, one-to-one, on Gulf Standard Time.
