IB Chemistry IA Help in Abu Dhabi

IB chemistry IA help in Abu Dhabi, starting with the question that decides the mark: does this chemical system produce a measurable change your child can actually quantify in a school lab? The scientific investigation is 24 marks, four criteria of six, a 3,000-word report and 20% of the Chemistry grade. Sessions are one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, built around the student's own titration results or rate data. The first lesson is free.

  • Topic screened against lab access before a single reagent is measured
  • Titration, rate and enthalpy precision chains worked through numerically
  • Twenty-four marks across four equally weighted criteria, each marked separately
  • The student designs, runs and writes; hazardous work stays in the school lab

IB & IGCSE in Abu Dhabi

Most Chemistry IA marks are decided by the chemistry chosen, not the writing

The IB Chemistry internal assessment is one scientific investigation, reported in up to 3,000 words and marked out of 24 across four criteria worth six marks each. It carries 20% of the Chemistry grade at Standard and Higher Level, and the school's marks are moderated by the IB. Parents in Abu Dhabi usually start searching when a draft comes back mid-range, but the decisive mistake has almost always been made weeks earlier, at the point the chemical system was chosen.

A Chemistry investigation needs a reaction or a property that changes measurably across a range the student can control, using apparatus their school actually has. That is a narrower requirement than it sounds. A student who picks an interesting reaction with a colour change nobody can quantify, or an equilibrium that shifts by less than the precision of the available balance, has set a ceiling on their mark before writing a word. No amount of careful analysis recovers a data set that has no signal in it.

The second decisive factor is the precision chain. Chemistry data is built from stacked measurements: a mass on a balance, a volume delivered by a pipette, a titre read from a burette, a dilution made with a volumetric flask. Each carries a tolerance, and those tolerances combine. A student who quotes a concentration to five significant figures from a measuring cylinder has not understood the chain, and criterion B will say so. Working through that arithmetic with the student's own apparatus tolerances is one of the most productive hours in the task.

Abu Dhabi adds a local constraint worth naming. ADEK licenses and inspects the emirate's private schools, and lab provision varies more between them than parents expect: some schools can support a calorimetry or spectrophotometry investigation comfortably, others restrict reagents and apparatus for sound safety reasons. A topic that works at one school on Al Reem Island may be undeliverable at a school in Al Shamkha, which is why we screen the topic against what the student can actually book lab time for.

All our sessions are one-to-one over live video. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. That suits this task, because almost everything after the lab work is spreadsheet and document work: the titre table, the propagated uncertainty, the graph of rate against concentration, and the comparison with a literature enthalpy value. What a student needs on screen is a specialist, not a visitor.

A typical engagement runs to three or four sessions rather than a term of weekly lessons, and the order of them matters more than the number. One session before the lab booking to screen the chemistry. Two after the practical, on the processing and the graphs. One on the full draft, marked criterion by criterion by a reader who does not already know what the student intended. Families who follow that order rarely need a fifth session, and we would rather say so than sell one.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Chemistry is assessed by the IB only in the Diploma, but the measurement discipline the investigation needs is built across the continuum. Here is where each programme sits for an Abu Dhabi family.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Chemistry is taken at SL or HL in group four, with content organised into Structure 1 to 3 and Reactivity 1 to 3. The internal assessment is a single scientific investigation worth 24 marks and 20% of the grade; the other 80% is sat in written papers. The investigation specification is the same at both levels.

Schools in the emirate usually schedule the Chemistry investigation in the second half of DP1 or early DP2, when lab time is easiest to book. Families here commonly need it supported in the same term as a Mathematics exploration, so the constraint is calendar space rather than ability.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

MYP Sciences assesses inquiring and designing and processing and evaluating, so students arrive in DP1 having written structured lab reports. What they rarely arrive with is apparatus tolerance arithmetic, which is the skill the Chemistry investigation leans on hardest.

Continuum schools around Al Raha and Saadiyat produce students used to lab writing conventions. Students arriving from a British or Indian system in this emirate have usually done titrations but have not had to propagate the uncertainty through a dilution.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1-Year 6

Primary Years Programme

PYP inquiry builds the habit of asking what else could explain a result, which criterion D eventually formalises. Nothing in the PYP is externally assessed, so no part of it affects a Diploma grade.

Families with children across programmes in the same Abu Dhabi school often ask when science starts to count. For Chemistry it is the DP investigation, which is the first chemistry coursework carrying marks towards the Diploma.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Investigations can be drawn from any syllabus unit, and some units are far kinder to a school lab than others. These are the territories we work in and what each means for a 24-mark report.

Structure 1 - models of the particulate nature of matter

SL and HL

Mole calculations, gas behaviour and spectroscopic ideas. Gas law investigations give clean data with simple apparatus, and a student who can control temperature properly will produce a defensible linear relationship with little else needed.

Structure 2 - models of bonding and structure

SL and HL

Intermolecular forces offer accessible investigations: evaporation rates, solubility trends across a homologous series, boiling point against chain length. The main design trap is a variable that changes two things at once, which is hard to justify under criterion A.

Structure 3 - classification of matter

SL and HL

Periodicity and organic functional group behaviour. Organic investigations in a school lab are usually limited by reagent access in this emirate, so the practical route is comparing reaction rates or physical properties across a series rather than attempting a synthesis.

Reactivity 1 - what drives chemical reactions

SL and HL

Energetics and calorimetry. The richest territory and the one with the most predictable discrepancy, because heat loss means a measured enthalpy change almost never matches the literature value. Explaining that gap quantitatively is where strong reports separate themselves.

Reactivity 2 - how much, how fast and how far

SL and HL

Equilibrium and kinetics. Rate investigations are the most common Chemistry IA in UAE schools because concentration is easy to vary and time is easy to measure. Distinction comes from determining an order of reaction properly rather than plotting rate against concentration once.

Reactivity 3 - what are the mechanisms of chemical change

SL and HL

Redox, acid-base and electrochemistry. Titration-based investigations sit here, and they reward precision discipline more than any other route: the mark is in the burette readings, the concordant titres and the propagated uncertainty, not in the chemistry.

Additional higher level content

HL only

Further energetics, kinetics and electrochemistry. HL students are not required to investigate HL content, but an electrochemical cell or a rate-order determination drawn from it usually produces a stronger claim to independent design under criterion A.

Titration and volumetric technique

SL and HL

Not a unit but the mark-bearing skill behind many investigations. Concordant titres within a stated range, correct use of a volumetric flask and pipette, rinsing discipline, and an uncertainty that reflects the burette's tolerance rather than its scale divisions.

Spectrophotometry and data-logging

SL and HL

Where a school has a colorimeter or spectrophotometer, absorbance data transforms a colour-change reaction into a quantitative one. It also introduces calibration as a design issue, which gives criterion D something specific and quantitative to evaluate.

Database and computational investigations

SL and HL

A legitimate route when lab access will not support a topic, using published thermodynamic or spectroscopic data. The design burden rises sharply: source reliability, the comparability of conditions and the selection criteria all have to be argued rather than assumed.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Chemistry investigation support divides by what has happened in the lab. Choose the shape by that, because a session before the practical and a session after it do completely different work.

Topic and lab-access screening

One session, before any practical booking. We test the chemical system for a measurable change across a controllable range, check the apparatus precision against the size of the effect, and confirm the school can supply what the method needs. The least glamorous session in the task and the one that saves the most money.

  • Does the system change measurably with the apparatus available?
  • Is the effect larger than the combined tolerance of the measurements?
  • Can the school's technicians supply the reagents and glassware required?
  • A one-paragraph proposal the student takes to their own teacher

Post-practical analysis block, three to four sessions

Data exists and now has to earn marks. Concordant titres assessed, uncertainties propagated through dilutions and molar calculations, graphs built and interpreted, and a conclusion that compares with a literature value honestly rather than apologetically.

  • Titre selection and the stated concordance range justified
  • Uncertainty propagated through every step of the concentration calculation
  • Rate orders or enthalpy values derived with their uncertainty
  • A criterion-level mark on the draft after each session

Weekly Chemistry with the investigation folded in

For students whose papers also need work. A standing weekly slot on syllabus content and paper technique, with investigation sessions at the design, first-draft and post-marking points. This covers the eighty per cent of the grade sat in the examination as well as the twenty in the report.

  • Content across Structure and Reactivity units week by week
  • Paper technique on calculation and extended-response questions
  • Investigation sessions placed where they change the mark
  • A clear line between what is taught and what the student must author

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Abu Dhabi

01

The first test: can this chemistry be measured in your child's school lab?

  • Effect size larger than the combined measurement tolerance
  • Seven or eight values of the independent variable, with repeats at each
  • Reagents and glassware the school can actually supply
  • A one-paragraph proposal for the teacher's approval before any practical booking

Before research design, before criteria, before writing, there is a feasibility question, and it is the question we ask in the first minute of a first session. Does the chemical system change measurably across a range the student can control, with apparatus their school can actually provide? If the honest answer is no, every subsequent hour is spent decorating a data set that cannot support a conclusion.

The test has three parts. First, the size of the effect against the precision of the measurement: if varying the concentration changes the time taken by two seconds and the student is timing by hand, the signal is inside the noise. Second, the range: at least seven or eight distinct values of the independent variable, with repeats, which means enough reagent and enough lab time. Third, availability: some reagents and apparatus are restricted in school labs for good safety reasons, and a method that assumes them is a method that will not run.

This is where Abu Dhabi specifics matter. Lab provision across the emirate's private schools varies considerably, and a student cannot assume a colorimeter, a data logger or a reflux setup. We ask what the student has personally used in a practical lesson this year, which is a far more reliable guide than the list of equipment a school's prospectus mentions. Where provision is thin, rate and titration investigations remain available and score perfectly well.

The outcome of this session is a one-paragraph proposal: the research question with its range, the measurement method, the apparatus list and the expected size of the effect. The student takes that to their own teacher, who approves or redirects it. That approval is the gate that matters, and a proposal written in these terms is far easier for a busy teacher to approve than a vague idea.

02

The chemical systems that reliably produce usable data

Rather than list topic ideas, which every competing page does, here is a table of the system types that work in a school lab, what they ask of the student, and the specific risk each carries. We use it in topic screening sessions because it converts an open question into a short list with known failure modes.

Two patterns are worth drawing out. Titration-based investigations are the most forgiving on data quality and the least forgiving on technique: the chemistry is simple, the mark lives in the precision chain, and a student who rinses the burette carelessly loses marks they will never see named. Rate investigations are the reverse: the technique is easy and the design is hard, because controlling temperature while varying concentration takes thought.

Calorimetry sits in the middle and is the most educational of the three, because the measured enthalpy change will not match the published value and the student has to explain the difference. That requirement is a gift for criteria C and D: a report that quantifies heat loss to the calorimeter and the surroundings, and estimates how much of the discrepancy it accounts for, is doing precisely what the criteria reward.

What we steer students away from is the system with a qualitative endpoint. A colour change judged by eye, a precipitate judged as it appears, a smell, a visible fizz: each produces data that cannot be quantified and uncertainties that cannot be stated. Where a school has a colorimeter, the same reaction becomes viable, which is why the apparatus question comes before the topic question.

03

The precision chain: where Chemistry numbers quietly stop being defensible

Chemistry data is layered. A concentration comes from a mass, a volume and a molar mass. A titre comes from two burette readings. A dilution multiplies the uncertainty of the flask by the uncertainty of the pipette. Each step has a tolerance, and criterion B wants to see those tolerances combined rather than mentioned. The single most common loss in an Abu Dhabi Chemistry draft is a final concentration quoted to four or five figures from apparatus that cannot support three.

The arithmetic is simple once set out. Absolute uncertainties add when quantities are added or subtracted, which is why a titre from two burette readings carries twice the reading uncertainty. Fractional uncertainties add when quantities are multiplied or divided, which is how the mass, volume and dilution uncertainties combine into the uncertainty in a concentration. Powers multiply the fractional uncertainty. Students who write those three rules at the top of their processing section almost always apply them correctly.

The table below lists the apparatus tolerances a student in an Abu Dhabi school lab will meet most often, offered as a sanity check rather than as a substitute for reading the glassware. Volumetric glassware carries a manufacturer's tolerance printed on it, and that figure, not the smallest scale division, is the number to use. A burette's scale divisions are 0.1 cm3 but a single reading uncertainty of half a division, taken twice, is what belongs in the calculation.

Significant figures are the visible symptom. If the propagated uncertainty in a concentration is 0.004 mol per dm3, the concentration is quoted to three decimal places and no further. A student who writes 0.10427 mol per dm3 has told the marker that the uncertainty was never carried through, and that costs marks under both criterion B and the conclusion.

TYPICAL APPARATUS TOLERANCES AND WHAT BELONGS IN THE CALCULATION
ApparatusTypical toleranceWhat to use in the propagationCommon error

04

Calorimetry and the discrepancy a student is meant to explain

  • Estimate the container's heat capacity rather than naming heat loss in general
  • Use an extrapolated cooling curve to find the true maximum temperature
  • State whether the accepted value lies within your experimental range
  • Check that your proposed systematic error pushes the result in the observed direction

An enthalpy investigation in a school lab will produce a value below the published one, usually by a noticeable margin, and students treat this as failure. It is the opposite: the discrepancy is the most markable feature of the whole report, because explaining it quantitatively is exactly what criteria C and D ask for. A report that says heat was lost to the surroundings scores poorly. A report that estimates how much heat the polystyrene cup absorbed and how much escaped during the measurement interval scores well.

The reasoning has a shape. The measured temperature change gives an energy transfer using the mass and specific heat capacity of the solution. The published enthalpy change gives the expected energy transfer for the moles reacting. The difference is energy unaccounted for, and the student's job is to apportion it: heat capacity of the container, losses during mixing, an assumption that the solution's specific heat capacity equals water's, incomplete reaction, impure reagent.

Each of those can be estimated or at least bounded, and a student who bounds two of them has given criterion D something quantitative to evaluate instead of a list. The extrapolated cooling-curve method, where temperature is recorded before and after mixing and the maximum is found by extrapolation, is the single technique that most improves an enthalpy investigation, and most students have never been shown it.

The same logic applies to any investigation whose result can be compared with an accepted value: a rate constant, a molar mass from titration, a solubility product. The conclusion should state whether the accepted value lies within the experimental range, and if it does not, what systematic effect would push the result in the direction observed. Direction matters. A systematic error that would raise a result cannot explain a result that came out low, and markers notice when a student has not checked.

05

The twenty-four marks as a Chemistry marker reads them

The four criteria carry six marks each, and in Chemistry the practical consequences of that equal weighting are specific. Research design is where chemical feasibility and justification sit. Data analysis is where the precision chain lives. Conclusion is where the comparison with an accepted value happens. Evaluation is where the discrepancy gets apportioned. A student can be chemically competent and still score poorly on three of the four.

We mark drafts cold, which approximates moderation better than a teacher's read can, because a teacher knows what the student meant. The table below is the diagnostic we apply, expressed as the thing on the page that separates a middling mark from a strong one in Chemistry specifically. It is not the official rubric: read the criterion descriptors in your child's own copy of the Chemistry guide, in the edition their school teaches.

A word about the word ceiling. Three thousand words is generous for a titration investigation and tight for a kinetics one with multiple orders to determine. Reports that run short are usually missing evaluation. Reports that run out of space have usually spent 500 words explaining a mechanism the examiner knows. Chemistry theory earns marks where it justifies a design choice or explains a discrepancy, and nowhere else.

We do not supply or reproduce IB documents, past investigations, mark schemes or grade boundary tables. We reference the guide, work from the wording your child's school uses, and point families at the official source.

Safety, supervision and the ethics line in a Chemistry investigation

  • Hazardous work stays in the school lab under its own risk assessment
  • Report data as collected; anomalies are discussed, never replaced
  • A tutor screens, teaches, questions and marks; the student authors everything
  • Keep dated raw data sheets and drafts as evidence of authorship

Chemistry is the group four subject where the safety boundary is most often tested, and it is not negotiable. Any investigation involving hazardous reagents, heating, pressure, strong acids or bases, or anything producing a gas must be carried out in the school lab, under the school's supervision and its risk assessment. We will not help design a method intended to be run at home, and we raise it at the design stage because that is when a student can still change course.

That constraint is also a design tool. A topic that cannot be run safely under school supervision is simply not available, which narrows the viable set usefully. Students who accept that early end up with investigations built around dilute solutions, measured masses and timed observations, which is where most strong school-lab chemistry lives anyway.

The academic honesty line is the same as elsewhere in the Diploma and worth stating in Chemistry's own terms. The data must be the data collected. A titre that does not fit cannot be quietly replaced with one that does, and a reading cannot be adjusted to improve a trend. A result set that is too neat is itself a flag to an experienced marker, because real volumetric data has spread in it. Anomalies belong in the analysis and the evaluation, where they earn marks.

A tutor may teach the chemistry, screen the topic, review the method for safety and feasibility, demonstrate uncertainty propagation on numbers the student is not using, mark drafts criterion by criterion, and say honestly that a draft needs no more sessions. A tutor may not produce the report, generate or adjust data, or run the student's calculations and hand over results. There are providers in this market selling completed internal assessments, and a family buying one is risking the Diploma rather than improving a grade.

07

What Chemistry support costs here, cheapest option first

Start at the bottom of the market rather than the top, because for this task the cheapest intervention is often the right one. The single most valuable session in a Chemistry investigation is the topic screening that happens before any lab booking, and it is one hour. At any tier in this market, one hour is a small purchase, and it is the hour that prevents the four-session rescue later.

Published UAE rates, read in October 2026, run as follows. Tutopiya advertises online tutoring from AED 33 to 52 an hour and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65, both at the budget online tier where DP criteria experience is rare. Unitors publishes IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. TutorChase quotes AED 270. Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 survey puts IB and IGCSE specialists at AED 200 to 450 and above, in-home visits at AED 180 to 350, and independent home tutors at AED 200 to 500. BartyED publishes AED 650 for a named premium tutor. Those are the providers' own figures, not ours.

The judgement a family actually has to make is tier against task. Budget-tier help can teach chemistry content perfectly adequately, and for a student whose problem is moles and equations that may be exactly the right purchase. What budget-tier help reliably does not have is experience of how a Chemistry investigation is marked and moderated, which is the thing a mid-range draft needs. Paying specialist rates for content revision, or budget rates for criterion-level marking, are the two ways families in this emirate waste money on this task.

IB Gram quotes after a free trial lesson, because the honest number depends on what the trial reveals. We publish no price list on this page and no in-home rate anywhere in the UAE, since we do not deliver that service here. What we will tell you in the first hour is roughly how many sessions the report needs, including when the answer is one.

Working backwards from the lab booking, and through Ramadan

  • Count backwards from the lab booking, not the submission date
  • Topic screened two weeks before the practical slot, method approved one week before
  • Full draft to the teacher at least two weeks before the final deadline
  • Ramadan sessions post-iftar, and ask the school about an earlier lab slot

A Chemistry investigation has one scheduling feature the other sciences share less acutely: the practical work happens in a slot the school controls. Everything therefore counts backwards from the lab booking rather than from the submission date. Topic screening belongs two weeks before the lab slot, the method and apparatus list a week before, data collection in the slot itself, analysis in the fortnight after, and the full draft in the teacher's hands with at least two weeks to spare.

Schools in Abu Dhabi work back from the May session, so group four internal assessments cluster in the second half of DP1 and the first term of DP2. A student who misses their lab slot because the method was not approved in time may not get another one in that window, which is the real cost of a late topic decision and the reason we front-load the screening session.

Ramadan changes the evening across the emirate: school days shorten, families reorganise around iftar, and the 5pm slot disappears. We move sessions to post-iftar timing rather than pausing them, and for a fasting student doing practical work it is worth asking the school whether the lab slot can be moved earlier in the day. Students sitting Cambridge or Pearson qualifications alongside the Diploma should note that UAE candidates sit the June and November series; the Cambridge February and March series is offered in India only.

For mid-year arrivals, the extra question is apparatus. A topic approved at a previous school may require a colorimeter or a particular reagent the new school does not hold, and that is better discovered in the first session than at the lab bench. We ask what the student has personally used this year, which is the fastest way to establish what is genuinely available.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Abu Dhabi

Lab access and evening timing both vary across the emirate, and both change what a Chemistry investigation can realistically be. These are the areas we work across.

Abu Dhabi island and Al Khalidiyah

Older school stock with well-established labs and fixed practical timetables. Sessions can start around 4.30pm, and students here usually have reliable after-school lab access booked through their teacher.

Al Reem Island

Apartment living, so no part of a Chemistry investigation happens at home. Everything depends on the school's lab slot, which makes the design review before that slot unusually valuable: a wasted practical session is hard to repeat.

Khalifa City and Al Raha

The corridor with the heaviest DP science load. Sessions start at 5pm or later after the school run, and the Chemistry investigation here tends to share a fortnight with the Mathematics exploration deadline.

Saadiyat Island

Newer provision with better-equipped labs in several schools, which widens the viable topic set to calorimetry and spectrophotometry rather than only rate and titration work.

Yas Island

Many students travelling for sport, so data collection happens in one concentrated lab block and the analysis is spread over following weeks with marked drafts in between.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City and Shakhbout City

Later evening slots from around 7pm, with MoE-mandated Arabic and Islamic Education alongside DP subjects. Topic choices here are often shaped by what the school's technicians can prepare at short notice.

Al Shamkha and Al Reef

Long commutes and tighter lab provision in some schools. Screening a topic against actual reagent and apparatus availability matters most here, because a second lab booking may not be possible.

Al Ain

Smaller DP cohorts under the same regulator, with few Chemistry specialists locally. Online delivery is the practical difference between criterion-level marking and general science help.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Abu Dhabi

Island and Al Bateen schools

Established DP Chemistry cohorts with reliable practical timetables. Students we support here usually arrive with titration data already collected and a question about whether their titres are concordant enough to use.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the topic idea and the lab slot

Two facts do most of the work: what chemical system the student has in mind, and when their school lab slot is. From those we can say whether the topic will yield data and whether a Chemistry specialist is free before that slot, at no cost.

  2. 02

Screen the topic in the free trial

The first lesson is free and goes on feasibility: effect size against apparatus precision, range, repeats and reagent availability. The student leaves with a one-paragraph proposal to take to their teacher, which is the approval that actually matters.

  3. 03

Collect data at school, analyse with us

The practical runs in the school lab under the school's supervision. The sessions that follow turn raw titres or temperature readings into propagated uncertainties, graphs and a derived value with a range, one criterion at a time.

  4. 04

    Get the draft marked cold

A full draft is marked criterion by criterion by someone who does not know what the student meant, which is closer to moderation than a familiar teacher's read. The mark and the reason go to the family in writing after the session.

    Final pass, then stop

Significant figures matched to uncertainties, units in every table header, sources cited, word count inside the ceiling. When the remaining work is the student's own rewriting, we say so rather than selling another session.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Feasibility screened before the lab slot

The decisive Chemistry IA mistake is a system that produces no measurable change with the available apparatus. We test that in the first hour, when the student can still change topic, rather than after a practical session they cannot repeat.

The precision chain done numerically

Tolerances for burettes, pipettes, flasks, balances and thermometers propagated through the student's own calculation. This is where criterion B marks sit, and it is arithmetic rather than talent, which makes it the most reliably recoverable mark in the task.

Discrepancies treated as material, not failure

An enthalpy value below the published one is the most markable feature of a calorimetry report. We teach students to apportion the gap quantitatively, which is what criteria C and D actually reward.

Safety and honesty stated at design stage

Hazardous work belongs in the school lab under the school's risk assessment, and data is reported as collected. We raise both before a method is written rather than after, because that is when the student can still act on it.

Tier matched to the actual gap

Paying specialist rates for content revision wastes money, and paying budget rates for criterion-level marking wastes the draft. We say which your child needs after the free trial, including when the answer is one session.

Specialists wherever the family lives

Chemistry investigation marking is a narrow specialism, and in Al Ain or the outer communities there may be nobody local who has done it. Online delivery on Gulf Standard Time removes distance from the equation and the travel premium from the rate.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

What makes a Chemistry IA topic viable in a school lab?+

Three things, tested in that order. The chemical change has to be measurable with the apparatus available, meaning the effect is larger than the combined tolerance of the measurements. There has to be range: seven or eight distinct values of whatever the student varies, with repeats at each, which means enough reagent and enough lab time. And the school has to be able to supply the glassware and reagents the method needs. A beautiful idea that fails any one of those tests will cap the mark before a word is written.

Why is my child's measured enthalpy change lower than the textbook value?+

Because energy escapes, and in a school calorimeter it escapes in ways you can quantify. Heat goes into the container itself, into the thermometer, and out to the surroundings during mixing and measurement, and the calculation usually assumes the solution's specific heat capacity equals water's. None of that is failure. The discrepancy is the most markable feature of the report: apportioning it, bounding two of the sources numerically, and using an extrapolated cooling curve to find the true maximum temperature is exactly what the conclusion and evaluation criteria reward.

How should uncertainty be handled through a dilution?+

Fractional uncertainties add when quantities are multiplied or divided, so a dilution combines the pipette's fractional uncertainty with the volumetric flask's, and that combined figure carries into the concentration. Use the manufacturer's tolerance printed on the glassware rather than the smallest scale division. A titre taken from two burette readings carries the reading uncertainty twice, because it is a difference. Once those are combined, round the uncertainty to one or two significant figures and quote the concentration to match it, not beyond it.

What counts as concordant titres, and how many are needed?+

Your school will state a range, commonly within 0.10 cm3 of each other, and the important thing is that the student states the range they used and applies it consistently. Three concordant titres after a rough run is the usual standard, and the mean is taken from the concordant ones with the rough titration excluded and that exclusion explained. What costs marks is silently discarding a titre that does not fit, or averaging everything including the rough run. Both are visible to a marker reading the raw data table.

Can my child do a Chemistry investigation without lab access?+

Yes, through a database or computational route using published thermodynamic, kinetic or spectroscopic data, but the design burden rises sharply. The reliability of the sources, the comparability of the conditions under which the data was gathered, and the criteria for selecting data points all have to be argued under research design rather than assumed. Evaluation then has to evaluate the data set and the selection, not apparatus. We treat this as the higher-risk route and say so, while recognising it is sometimes the only one available.

How long should the Chemistry investigation report be?+

Up to 3,000 words, which is generous for a titration study and tight for a kinetics one with several orders to determine. The commonest fault is spending several hundred words restating a mechanism the examiner already knows and then rushing evaluation, which is a quarter of the mark. Theory earns credit only where it justifies a design decision or explains a discrepancy. Check your school's guidance on whether data tables, captions and references count, since practice varies between schools in the emirate.

Does the IB Chemistry IA differ between SL and HL?+

No. The specification, the four criteria and the 24 marks are identical at Standard and Higher Level, and there is no requirement for an HL student to investigate additional higher level content. In practice a student drawing on HL kinetics or electrochemistry often ends up with a more substantial relationship to analyse and a stronger claim to independent design, which helps under research design. But a rigorous SL-level investigation will out-score an ambitious HL-level one that produces unusable data.

Can a tutor tell my child which data points to drop?+

No, and the question matters. Data must be reported as collected. A tutor can ask whether a reading was mis-transcribed, whether an instrument drifted during the run, and whether an outlier should be investigated or discussed, and can teach the student how to handle anomalies in the analysis so they earn marks. What a tutor cannot do is select or adjust results to improve a trend. A data set that is too neat is itself a signal to an experienced marker, because real volumetric data carries spread.

Are Chemistry IA sessions online or does someone come to our home?+

Online, one-to-one over live video. IB Gram does not send tutors to addresses anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we offer only in India. The practical work happens in your child's school lab under the school's supervision either way, which is where hazardous chemistry belongs. Everything else, including the titre table, the propagated uncertainties, the graphs and the draft, is screen work, and a shared screen with a specialist is more useful than a visitor at a dining table.

What does Chemistry IA help cost in Abu Dhabi?+

Taking the published UAE market from the bottom up: AED 33 to 65 an hour at the budget online tier, AED 150 to 300 for a qualified subject tutor online, AED 200 to 450 and above for IB specialists, AED 180 to 500 for in-home visits where travel is priced in, and AED 650 at one provider for a named tutor. Those are the providers' own figures read in October 2026. For this task the cheapest useful purchase is a single topic-screening hour before the lab booking, which is why we quote after a free trial rather than from a rate card.

My child's school restricts reagents. Does that limit the mark?+

It limits the topic set, not the mark. Strong investigations are routinely built from dilute acid-base titrations, measured masses, timed reactions and temperature changes, all of which sit inside any school's safety envelope. The restriction becomes a problem only when a student designs around apparatus the school does not hold and discovers it at the bench. We ask what the student has personally used in a practical lesson this year, which is a more reliable guide to availability than a prospectus equipment list.

When should the topic be chosen relative to the lab slot?+

At least two weeks before it, with the method and apparatus list approved by the teacher a week before. The lab slot is the fixed point in a Chemistry investigation because the school controls it, and a student whose method is not approved in time may not get a second booking inside the assessment window. Counting backwards from the slot rather than from the submission deadline is the scheduling habit that prevents the most common and most expensive failure in this task.

How does the conclusion compare a result with a literature value properly?+

By stating the experimental range and saying whether the accepted value falls inside it. A result of 52 kilojoules per mole with an uncertainty of 4 either side either contains the published figure or it does not, and that sentence is what the criterion wants. If the accepted value lies outside the range, the student then has to name a systematic effect that would push the result in the direction actually observed. Direction is where most drafts slip: an error that would raise a value cannot explain one that came out low.

How are Chemistry sessions arranged during Ramadan?+

Sessions move to post-iftar timing rather than stopping, because school days shorten across the emirate and the usual late-afternoon slot stops working. Two shorter sessions a week often suit a fasting student better than one long one, with a draft marked between them so the work moves without live time. If a practical slot falls in Ramadan, it is worth asking the school whether the lab can be booked earlier in the day, since concentration at a bench matters more than at a desk.

What if no Chemistry specialist is free before our deadline?+

We say so plainly rather than matching your child with a general science tutor. Group four internal assessment deadlines cluster across Abu Dhabi schools, and specialist availability tightens in exactly those weeks. The honest options are a later start with written feedback on a draft in the meantime, a tutor outside the emirate on a compatible evening schedule, or using the school's own clinic hours with a specific list of questions to ask. An unsuitable match on a graded component costs more than a delay.

Screen the topic before you book the lab

If your child has a Chemistry investigation ahead of them, the highest-value hour available is the one before the lab slot. Send us the chemical system they have in mind, the apparatus they have personally used this year, and the date of their practical booking, and the free trial lesson will tell you whether that system can produce data worth analysing. If it can, the student leaves with a one-paragraph proposal for their teacher. If it cannot, they find out while there is still time to change course, which is the cheapest good news in this task.
