IB & IGCSE in Abu Dhabi

What an Abu Dhabi parent can verify about IA work, and what they cannot

A Diploma candidate hands in six internal components over about eighteen months. Nobody outside the school sees them marked. Your child's teacher assigns a mark against published criteria, the school moderates internally, and the IB samples and adjusts at the end. The parent sits outside that loop entirely. So when a family in Abu Dhabi searches for an IB DP Internal Assessment home tutor, the real anxiety underneath the search is not usually about teaching. It is about visibility. There is money going out, a deadline coming, and no instrument for telling whether the work is actually improving.

That is the problem this page is built around. Not what an internal assessment is, which any school handbook explains, but what a parent can hold in their hand as evidence. The answer is narrower than most providers admit and more useful than a progress report. You can see a dated draft. You can see annotation that names a criterion letter and says which descriptor band the paragraph currently sits in. You can see a change log: what the student rewrote between Tuesday and the following Tuesday, and whether that change addressed the comment or avoided it. You can see whether the research question has stopped moving, which is usually the single best predictor of whether the piece will land.

What you cannot see, and should be suspicious of anyone offering, is a predicted mark presented as a number with a decimal point. Internal marks are moderated. A tutor who tells you the exploration is "a 17 out of 20" is describing their own opinion of a descriptor band, not a result. The honest version is a range with a reason attached: criterion B is sitting in the middle band because the mathematics is correct but unextended, and here is the one paragraph that would move it. That sentence is checkable. A number is not.

The second thing a parent cannot see is authorship, and that is the part that matters most. The IB treats an internal component as the student's own work, supported by a supervisor, with one formal round of written teacher feedback on a draft. A tutor who sits outside that relationship has to be scrupulous about where their hands go. Annotation, questioning, modelling on a different example, teaching the statistics the student never covered: all legitimate. Supplying sentences that end up in the document: not. Our sessions are run so that the record shows the student's revisions, and so that a coordinator reviewing the version history would see nothing surprising.

Internal assessment work in Abu Dhabi carries one local wrinkle worth knowing before you pay anyone. ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff bar teachers from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE private tuition work permit carries a code of conduct that also bars serving students affiliated with the permit-holder's own school. Press reporting of those rules is clear enough that families should treat the offer of your child's own subject teacher, privately, as a problem rather than an advantage. Verify the current wording against ADEK's own policy document before acting on it.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Internal assessment is a Diploma Programme phrase, but the habit of being marked against published criteria starts years earlier in an IB school. Where your child sits in that sequence changes what a tutoring hour should be doing, so the programmes below are described by the assessment they produce rather than by age alone.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three at Higher Level, each carrying an internally assessed component alongside the examination papers. The Theory of Knowledge exhibition and essay and the Extended Essay sit on top as core requirements. The internal components run on school-set deadlines that cluster in the second half of DP1 and the first half of DP2, which is why three of them regularly land in the same fortnight.

Abu Dhabi Diploma cohorts are concentrated in a handful of schools licensed by ADEK on the island, along the Khalifa City and Al Raha corridor, and on Yas Island. That concentration means a subject can be taught by one teacher across the whole year group, so a student who does not click with that teacher's explanation of uncertainty analysis has nowhere else in the building to go.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Assessed against four criteria per subject, each scored one to eight, with no percentages anywhere. The Personal Project in the final year is the first piece of long-form independent work most IB students meet, and it rehearses the habits an internal assessment demands: a researchable question, a process record, and a judgement about what the evidence will actually support.

Many Abu Dhabi families arrive mid-MYP from a British or American system and meet criterion marking for the first time. The practical consequence for internal assessment work two years later is a student who has never had to justify a method in writing, which is the skill the DP investigation criteria are built to test.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1-Year 6

Primary Years Programme

Inquiry-led, with the Year 6 exhibition as its culminating piece of collaborative research. Nothing here is externally assessed, and no criterion letters appear. What it does establish is whether a child is comfortable being asked why they chose a method, which is the question that governs criterion marks for the next decade.

PYP provision in Abu Dhabi is spread widely across community schools in Khalifa City, Al Reef and the newer mainland developments. Parents at this stage rarely need subject tutoring; where support helps is English and mathematics fluency, since a Year 6 reading gap is visible in an MYP science criterion C response four years later.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

Combines DP courses with a career-related study, a reflective project, personal and professional skills, service learning and a language portfolio. The reflective project is assessed against published criteria and functions much as an internal assessment does, with a supervisor, an ethical dimension and a word limit.

CP cohorts in the UAE are small and concentrated in a few schools, so a CP student needing support on the reflective project is often the only candidate in the building taking that pathway. Online matching is the practical answer to a cohort of one; a locally resident tutor pool rarely contains the right person.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Every subject's internal component is marked against its own criteria, with its own raw total and its own failure modes. The grid below names the component rather than the subject in general, because "IA help" is not a service — supervision of a Chemistry scientific investigation is. Confirm the current mark totals with your child's coordinator; subject guides are revised.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL — the mathematical exploration

Twenty marks across five criteria, worth a fifth of the subject grade at both levels. Most marks are lost on criterion C, personal engagement, and criterion E, use of mathematics: a correct but textbook treatment of a standard result sits in the middle band however neatly it is presented.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL — the mathematical exploration

Same twenty marks, same five criteria, a different flavour of risk. AI explorations usually have real data and under-used mathematics. A regression line with no residual analysis and no discussion of why the model is appropriate scores poorly on criterion E even when the dataset is interesting.

Biology

HL and SL — the scientific investigation

One investigation, marked against research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation, worth a fifth of the subject grade. The commonest defect is a research question that names neither a measurable dependent variable nor a controlled range, which caps the design criterion before any data exist.

Chemistry

HL and SL — the scientific investigation

Same criteria as the other sciences, with uncertainty and error propagation doing most of the damage. Students who recorded a burette reading to two decimal places and then quoted a concentration to five significant figures lose analysis marks they could have kept with ten minutes of teaching.

Physics

HL and SL — the scientific investigation

Graphical analysis is where this one is won. A linearised plot with sensible error bars, a gradient used to extract a physical constant, and a comparison against an accepted value will carry the analysis and conclusion criteria. A bar chart of three repeats will not.

History

HL and SL — the historical investigation

Twenty-five marks in three sections, including an explicit evaluation of two sources by origin, purpose and content. Students write history essays instead and lose the section one marks entirely. The word limit is tight and the reflection section is routinely treated as an afterthought.

Economics

HL and SL — the portfolio of commentaries

Three commentaries on three different units of the syllabus, each on a news article published within a set window, each under a strict word limit. The repeated error is a commentary that summarises the article instead of applying a diagram and analysing it, and three articles that all belong to the same unit.

Business Management

HL and SL — the business research or project

Assessed on a real organisation and a real problem, with marks for the quality of the research question and the use of supporting documents. Students pick a global company with no accessible data and then cannot evidence anything, which costs them across several criteria at once.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL — individual oral and HL essay

The individual oral turns on a global issue genuinely visible in both extracts, not asserted over them. The HL essay needs a line of inquiry narrow enough to sustain argument. Both are internally assessed and both reward a student who can say what they are arguing in one sentence.

Psychology

HL and SL — the experimental study

A replication of a published study, written up with the statistics actually applied rather than described. Marks go missing on the exploration of the original study and on a results section that reports a test without stating why that test suits the design and the data.

Geography

HL and SL — the fieldwork write-up

Built on primary data a student collected themselves, so the method section has to survive scrutiny. The frequent problem in the Gulf is fieldwork designed around a question the local environment cannot answer, which then forces a conclusion the data do not support.

Visual Arts

HL and SL — comparative study and process portfolio

Two internal components rather than one, each with its own page limits and its own criteria. The process portfolio is judged on evidence of experimentation over time, which means a portfolio assembled in the last fortnight reads as exactly that to an examiner.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Internal assessment support divides into three honest shapes, and the right one depends on how far the document has already travelled. Buying the wrong shape is the commonest way families waste money on this component: a weekly hour is pointless three days before upload, and an intensive is wasted on a student with no research question.

Fortnightly supervision across a term

The pattern that produces the clearest evidence. A session every two weeks across the drafting period, each one ending with an annotated version and a short written note. Between sessions the student revises alone, which is what the component is testing. This shape makes grade movement visible because there is a dated sequence of drafts to compare rather than one before-and-after.

  • Dated draft and criterion annotation after every session
  • A two-line written note naming what changed and what did not
  • The student works alone between sessions, by design
  • Best started in the term the research question is due, not the term the document is due

Diagnostic read of an existing draft

One or two sessions on a document that already exists, producing a criterion-by-criterion read and a priority order. Families use this to decide whether they need ongoing supervision at all. Roughly half the time the honest answer is that the draft is fine and the subject teaching is the real gap, which is a different purchase.

  • A written read against each criterion, in the subject guide's own language
  • A ranked list of what would move the mark, not a list of everything wrong
  • An explicit statement of what cannot be fixed in the time left
  • No obligation to book a block afterwards

Method and statistics teaching alongside the component

Often the real need behind an internal assessment search. A student cannot evaluate uncertainty they were never taught, or apply a statistical test nobody covered. These sessions teach the method on a worked example that is not the student's own task, then the student applies it to their own data. The teaching is transferable; the application stays theirs.

  • Uncertainty, error propagation and significant figures for the sciences
  • Choosing and justifying a statistical test for Psychology and Biology
  • Modelling, residuals and fit for Mathematics Applications explorations
  • Source evaluation by origin, purpose and content for History

Pre-upload review in the final fortnight

A tightly bounded session for a document that is nearly finished: word and page limits, citation completeness, whether the reflection section actually reflects, whether the conclusion matches the data. It is the cheapest useful intervention available and the one most families leave too late to book.

  • Word, page and format limits checked against the current subject guide
  • Citations and bibliography completeness
  • Whether the stated conclusion is supported by what is in the document
  • A go or no-go judgement on anything still unresolved

IB and IGCSE tutors available to students in Abu Dhabi

The tutors below work on internal assessment drafts rather than on generic revision. Each one is matched to a named subject and level, because the criteria for a Chemistry investigation and a History research question share nothing except a submission date. What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Abu Dhabi

01

What an internal assessment evidence file looks like, and when it should exist

An internal assessment evidence file is not a formal thing the IB requires. It is the set of artefacts a paying parent should be able to see, and it exists whether or not anyone collects it deliberately. If you cannot assemble it after a month of sessions, the sessions are producing conversation rather than progress. The point of naming the artefacts is that each one is binary: it exists or it does not, and its absence tells you something specific rather than leaving you to read a tutor's tone of voice.

The most informative artefact is the dated draft sequence. Three versions a fortnight apart, each with annotation that names a criterion letter, lets you see whether the student is responding to feedback or working around it. A student who receives a comment on criterion D and returns a draft with a longer introduction is avoiding the comment. That is visible in the sequence and invisible in a verbal report. The second most informative artefact is the research question history, because a question that is still moving in week six is the single clearest warning sign in this whole component.

The table below is the file we aim to have in place after four weeks. Where an artefact is missing, the right conversation is about why, not about whether the tutor is nice. A missing change log usually means the student is rewriting from scratch each time instead of revising, which is slower and scores worse. A missing statement of what cannot be fixed usually means nobody has looked honestly at the deadline. Both are fixable in one session if named.

02

Reading a marked draft when you are not the subject teacher

  • Every comment should name a criterion letter from the subject guide
  • Content defects and presentation defects cost different amounts; the annotation should distinguish them
  • "Do this next" is coaching; "this should say that" drifts towards dictation
  • You should be able to state the next task in one sentence after reading the draft

Most parents in this position are competent, educated adults who cannot judge a Chemistry investigation, and that is entirely reasonable. The useful move is not to learn Chemistry. It is to learn to read the shape of the annotation, which is subject-independent. Good annotation on a draft points at a criterion, quotes the descriptor the paragraph currently satisfies, and says what a higher band would contain. You can check all three of those without knowing anything about titration.

Three tests work on any subject. First, does each comment name a criterion letter? A margin note reading "expand this" is not feedback against anything. Second, does the comment distinguish between a defect of content and a defect of presentation? Those have different costs: a missing uncertainty analysis loses marks, an untidy graph title usually does not. Third, does the comment say what the student should do, or does it say what should be there? The second phrasing is the one that quietly turns into dictation, and it is the form to watch for.

The fourth test is about you rather than the document. After reading the annotation, can you say in one sentence what the next piece of work is? If yes, the supervision is doing its job. If you finish the page knowing only that things are being worked on, ask for the change log and the criterion mapping explicitly. Nobody minds the question, and a tutor who cannot produce either is not keeping records a coordinator would recognise.

03

Criterion letters, raw marks and what each internal component is worth

The single most useful fact about internal assessment is that the marks are not distributed the way students assume. Across the sciences and mathematics, the criteria that reward judgement — evaluation, personal engagement, reflection — carry more weight than students give them, while the criteria that reward neatness carry almost none. A student who spends an extra week formatting and skips the evaluation section has traded marks for comfort. Naming the raw totals makes that trade visible, and it is the gap that nothing in the competing pages on this search fills.

The share of the subject grade also varies more than families expect. A fifth is the common figure, but History is a quarter at Standard Level and a fifth at Higher Level, and the Economics portfolio is close to a third at Standard Level. That matters for how you allocate a limited tutoring budget across six subjects. If one of your child's subjects puts thirty per cent of the grade in a document, that document is the highest-leverage thing a tutoring hour can touch anywhere in the Diploma.

The figures below are drawn from the published IB subject guides. Subject guides are revised, and a school may be teaching a cohort under an older version, so treat the table as the shape of the thing and confirm the exact totals with your child's Diploma coordinator before you plan around them. What will not change is the ranking: judgement criteria outweigh presentation criteria in every single subject.

The authenticity record: versions, dates and one formal round of feedback

  • The student holds the keyboard in every session; a tutor annotates and questions
  • Method teaching happens on a worked example that is not the student's own task
  • Version history should show gradual change in a single voice across weeks
  • If a student cannot explain a paragraph aloud, it should not be in the document

The IB's position on internal assessment support is not ambiguous, and it is worth stating plainly because the search results for this query include at least one operation selling finished documents. An internal component must be the student's own work. The supervising teacher may give one round of formal written feedback on a draft, and the student declares the work authentic on submission. Everything a tutor does has to sit comfortably inside that structure, which in practice means the record should look ordinary to anyone who inspects it.

What makes a record look ordinary is a visible history of the student's own revisions. If a document's version history shows gradual change in one voice, with dates spread across weeks, it tells a consistent story. If it shows a thin outline followed by a polished submission appearing in a single sitting, it raises a question the student has to answer. So the practical rule for our sessions is that the student holds the keyboard. A tutor annotates, asks, teaches the missing method, models the same technique on a different example, and then stops. Nothing a tutor says arrives in the document as a sentence.

This is also the honest answer to the question families ask most nervously: will the school know a tutor was involved? Possibly, and it does not matter. There is nothing to hide in paying for teaching. What would matter is a document whose voice does not match the student's class work, or a methodology section describing statistics the student cannot explain when asked. Both are detectable in a five-minute conversation with a supervisor, which is exactly why the only safe form of help is the kind that leaves the student able to defend every line.

05

An IA term counted backwards from your school's upload deadline

Nobody ranking for this search counts the term backwards, and it is the most useful planning tool available. The date that governs everything is not the examination session. It is your school's internal upload deadline, which sits weeks earlier and is set by your coordinator, not by the IB. Ask for it in writing at the start of the year. Every milestone below is counted from that date, and the arithmetic is what tells you whether a plan is realistic or wishful.

The common failure is arithmetic rather than effort. A student who starts an investigation six weeks before upload has not left room for data collection to fail once, which it usually does. A student who settles a research question in week two has bought themselves the ability to lose a fortnight and recover. This is the single thing a parent can control, and it costs nothing: insist on a research question in writing early, and treat its continued movement as the warning sign it is.

Note that IB session and results dates are deliberately absent from this page. The IB's own site blocks automated checking, so no session or results date in this project is confirmed from the IB itself. Abu Dhabi schools predominantly enter candidates for the May session, and your coordinator holds the authoritative calendar. Where Cambridge or Pearson dates matter to a sibling sitting IGCSE, those boards publish live timetables and should be read directly rather than restated here.

ADEK, your school's internal calendar, and the teacher you may not pay

  • ADEK licenses and inspects Abu Dhabi private schools and publishes the inspection record
  • The MoHRE private tuition permit is free of charge and granted for two years
  • No published fine schedule exists, so treat any quoted figure as unverified
  • Your child's own subject teacher is the wrong person to pay for internal assessment help

Abu Dhabi private schools are licensed and inspected by the Department of Education and Knowledge, ADEK, which the UAE government's own portal describes as supervising the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate. That is worth knowing for two reasons. The first is that ADEK publishes an inspection record for your child's school, and an inspection report is a far better guide to how well a Diploma programme is run than any marketing page. The second is the ethics rule, which has direct consequences for internal assessment support.

Press reporting of ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff describes a prohibition on teachers providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, with teachers tutoring outside school hours required to hold the MoHRE private tuition work permit, whose code of conduct also bars serving students affiliated with their own school. Treat that as press-reported and verify it against the current ADEK policy document before relying on the exact wording. The direction of travel is unambiguous enough that an offer of your own child's supervisor, privately and for money, should be declined.

The permit itself is worth understanding, because it is the one compliance question a parent can actually check. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, which introduced private tuition work permits. The UAE government portal states the permit is granted free of charge for two years, and that eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private sector employees, unemployed individuals, school students aged fifteen to eighteen and university students. Individuals offering private tutoring without a MoHRE permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published, so no amount should be quoted to you. MoHRE's own service page, 'Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing', is the official application route.

07

What internal assessment supervision costs around Abu Dhabi

Three of the six pages ranking for this family of searches publish no price at all, and two of the remaining ones quote United States dollars, a currency no Abu Dhabi family transacts in. So here is the market in dirhams, with every figure attributed to whoever published it. These are market rates, not an IB Gram price list. Our own model runs on a free first lesson and a consultation that quotes against the subject, level and component, because an hour of Mathematics exploration supervision and an hour of general revision are not the same product.

Document supervision usually sits at the upper end of whatever band a provider quotes, for a straightforward reason: it requires someone who has marked against those criteria, and it consumes preparation time outside the session reading a draft. An hour of supervision that includes a read of eight pages and written annotation is not an hour of the tutor's time. Any provider quoting a single flat rate for all tutoring is either absorbing that or not doing it.

The other number worth knowing is how little of this component you may actually need to buy. A diagnostic read plus a pre-upload check is two or three hours and is sufficient for a competent student whose research question is sound. Fortnightly supervision across a term is the right purchase when the student has stalled or the method teaching is genuinely missing. Buying a weekly hour from October to April for a student who needed three hours in total is the commonest waste in this market.

Online document work against a visiting tutor, on the same draft

IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India, and every one of our country pages says so. That is a constraint worth defending rather than apologising for, and internal assessment work is the component where the case is strongest. A document is already a shared object. Two people reading the same screen, with a cursor and a comment thread, is not a degraded version of sitting side by side at a kitchen table. For annotation work it is better, because everything said leaves a record.

The second argument is about who you get. Abu Dhabi has a finite number of people who have marked a Physics scientific investigation against the current criteria, and the subset of those who will drive to Al Falah on a Tuesday evening is smaller still. Matching online removes the driving radius from the selection criteria entirely. A family in Khalifa City gets a specialist in their child's actual component rather than the best available person within a twenty-minute commute.

The third argument is the one families discover for themselves after a term. A visiting tutor's hour includes travel the family pays for in money and in schedule rigidity: the slot cannot move, because the tutor has a route. An online slot moves. During Ramadan it moves to after Iftar. In the fortnight before an upload deadline it can become two short sessions instead of one long one, which is what document work actually wants. None of that is available when someone is driving across the emirate to reach you.

When the evidence says the sessions are not working

  • Four weeks of evidence is enough to judge whether supervision is the right purchase
  • Missing subject knowledge needs teaching, not more document review
  • A non-viable research question should be changed early or optimised within its ceiling
  • Coverage gaps and match times are disclosed before you commit, not after

A page that sells supervision should also say when to stop buying it, because the evidence file makes that judgement possible and almost nobody publishes the criteria. Four weeks is a fair window. By then there should be a dated draft sequence, annotation mapped to criteria, and a change log. If all three exist and the drafts are still not moving, the problem is not the supervision and more supervision will not fix it.

There are three usual diagnoses. The first is that the subject knowledge underneath is missing, so the student cannot act on feedback about analysis because they do not understand the analysis. The fix is subject teaching, not document supervision, and it is a different purchase. The second is that the research question was never viable, in which case the honest move is to change it if the deadline allows and to optimise within a capped mark if it does not. The third is motivational: the student does not want to work on this and is performing compliance in sessions. Nothing bought by the hour fixes that, and saying so is more useful than selling another block.

Coverage is the last honest disclosure. Abu Dhabi does not contain a resident specialist for every Higher Level component, and the thinner pathways — Visual Arts process portfolios, the Career-related Programme reflective project, less common language A combinations — sometimes have no local match at all. When that happens we say so before you commit, name the match time, and where the right specialist is based outside the UAE, we tell you that too. No competitor page in this cluster discloses a coverage limit. It is the easiest trust signal available and it costs only candour.

Where we tutor

Where Abu Dhabi families doing IA work actually live

Internal assessment work is document work, so the geography that matters is not driving distance to a tutor. It is what time a student gets home, how long the laptop is free, and whether the household's evening has a quiet ninety minutes in it. The notes below are about that.

Saadiyat Island

Short school runs and a high concentration of Diploma candidates in a few schools. The practical constraint is co-curricular load: rowing, music and service commitments often push the usable slot past 7pm, which suits a scheduled online session better than a tutor arriving at a fixed hour.

Al Reem Island

Apartment living with siblings in the same room is the recurring issue for document work. Families here usually settle on a weekend morning block for drafting and a short midweek review, rather than two evening hours in a shared space.

Khalifa City

Buses from the island schools frequently arrive after 4.30pm, so a 4pm start is a fiction. Villa households here tend to take a 6.30pm or 7pm slot, and a Saturday morning session when an upload deadline is inside three weeks.

Al Raha Beach and Al Raha Gardens

A dense cluster of DP families feeding a small number of schools, which means the same internal deadlines hit many households in the same week. Booking supervision early in the term rather than in the fortnight before upload is the difference between a choice of tutor and whoever is left.

Al Bateen and Al Khalidiyah

Older island neighbourhoods with long-established schools and a mix of curricula in the same street. Students here often have a longer commute to a sports or music commitment than to school, and the free evening is Sunday rather than Monday.

Yas Island and West Yas

Newer schools, newer cohorts, and year groups where an entire Higher Level class is taught by one teacher. That makes a second explanation of the same topic valuable, and it makes an outside reader of a draft genuinely useful rather than merely reassuring.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City and Shakhbout City

Mainland villa communities with large family households and a wide spread of school destinations. The scheduling constraint is usually a shared car and multiple drop-offs, so the slot that survives the term is the one that needs nobody to drive anywhere.

Masdar City, Al Falah and Al Reef

Longer commutes to island schools and a thinner local pool of subject specialists at Higher Level. These are the households where matching on subject rather than postcode changes the quality of supervision most visibly.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Abu Dhabi

The island, Saadiyat and Al Bateen

The longest-established Diploma cohorts in the emirate sit here, which usually means settled internal deadline calendars and experienced coordinators. Students we support attend schools in this cluster; ADEK publishes the licensing and inspection record for each one.

  • The British School Al Khubairat
  • American Community School of Abu Dhabi
  • Cranleigh Abu Dhabi
  • Al Bateen Academy
  • Abu Dhabi International School
  • Repton School Abu Dhabi

Khalifa City, Al Raha and Yas Island

The fastest-growing Diploma corridor in Abu Dhabi, and the one where internal deadlines most often arrive in a single compressed block because cohorts are newer and calendars are still settling. School-run times here push session slots later than families expect.

  • Raha International School
  • Al Yasmina Academy
  • GEMS American Academy Abu Dhabi
  • West Yas Academy
  • The International School of Choueifat Abu Dhabi
  • Emirates National Schools

Mainland, Mussafah and the newer communities

A wide curriculum mix, with IB Diploma provision alongside British and Indian streams. Families here are the most likely to be the only candidate in their building taking a particular Higher Level subject, which is where online matching does real work.

  • Brighton College Abu Dhabi
  • Nord Anglia International School Abu Dhabi
  • Al Mamoura Academy
  • GEMS Cambridge International School Abu Dhabi
  • Abu Dhabi Indian School

Schools are named here only as context for where Abu Dhabi Diploma candidates study; no affiliation, endorsement or partnership with any named school or group is implied, and licensing and inspection outcomes should be read on ADEK's own published listings.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the subject, the level and the component

Not "IB help" but "Chemistry HL scientific investigation, draft due in five weeks". That sentence is what makes a match possible. If you also know your school's internal upload deadline, send it; everything in the plan is counted backwards from that date rather than from the examination session.

  2. 02

A free first lesson that returns a diagnosis

The first session is a read of whatever exists, against the published criteria, ending in a written note: what band each criterion currently sits in, what would move it, and what cannot be fixed in the time available. If the answer is that you do not need ongoing supervision, you will be told that.

  3. 03

Agree the shape, not just the hours

Fortnightly supervision, a one-off diagnostic, method teaching or a pre-upload check are different products with different prices. Picking the wrong shape is how families overspend on this component. The shape is agreed in writing along with a review point, usually four weeks out.

  4. 04

Check the file at the review point

At four weeks, look at the artefacts rather than at how the sessions felt. Dated drafts, criterion annotation, a change log, and a statement of what is out of reach. If any of the four is missing, that is the conversation to have, and it is a fair one to raise with us directly.

  5. 05

Change the plan when the evidence says to

Supervision that is not moving a draft should be swapped for subject teaching, reduced to a pre-upload check, or stopped. A tutor who proposes more hours in response to no movement is not reading the file. Rematching is normal and carries no penalty.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The evidence comes back in writing

Every session produces a dated draft, criterion-letter annotation and a two-line change log. That is the deliverable, not a feeling that things are going well. It also means a disagreement about whether the work is improving can be settled by looking rather than by arguing.

Matched on the component, not the postcode

A Mathematics exploration, a historical investigation and a Visual Arts process portfolio need three different people. Matching online instead of by driving distance means the selection is made on who has marked that component, which is the only criterion that predicts useful supervision.

The authorship line is written down

The student holds the keyboard. Method is taught on a worked example that is not their task. Nothing a tutor says arrives in the document as a sentence. That boundary is published here so you can hold us to it, and so your child can defend every line if asked.

Every dirham figure belongs to its source

The rates on this page are what named providers published, with the date attached. They are the market, not our price list. Our own pricing comes from a consultation after a free first lesson, because a quote given before anyone has read the draft is a guess.

The delivery model is stated, not implied

Lessons are one-to-one and online, on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not run home visits anywhere in the UAE. Saying so on a page that targets a home-tutor search is less comfortable than staying vague, and it is the only version a parent can plan around.

Coverage limits are disclosed first

Some Higher Level components have no resident specialist in Abu Dhabi. When that is true for your child's subject, you hear it before you commit, along with the match time and where the right person is based. No page in this search result does that, which is why it is worth doing.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

What should I have in my hand after four weeks of internal assessment sessions?+

Four things, all of them documents. A dated sequence of at least three drafts. Annotation on each one that names a criterion letter and says which descriptor band the passage currently satisfies. A change log of two lines per session saying what moved between versions. And a written statement of what cannot be fixed in the time remaining. If you have all four and the drafts are visibly different from each other, the supervision is working. If you have reassurance and no documents, that is the conversation to have at the four-week mark rather than in the week before upload.

How many marks is each internal component worth across my son's six Diploma subjects?+

It varies more than families expect, which is why it is worth checking subject by subject. Around a fifth of the subject grade is the common figure for the sciences and for both mathematics courses. History is a quarter at Standard Level and a fifth at Higher Level. The Economics portfolio of three commentaries is closer to a third at Standard Level. Raw totals differ too: twenty marks for a mathematical exploration, twenty-four for a scientific investigation, twenty-five for a historical investigation. Confirm the current figures with your Diploma coordinator, since subject guides are revised and a cohort may be taught under an older version.

My daughter's supervisor has already given the one formal round of written feedback. Is a tutor still allowed to look at the draft?+

Yes. The one-formal-round rule governs what the supervising teacher provides, not what other teaching a student may receive. A tutor can read the draft, annotate it against the criteria, explain what the supervisor's comments mean in practice, and teach a method the student never covered. What a tutor cannot do is supply sentences that end up in the document, or rework a passage so the voice stops being the student's. The practical test is whether your daughter can explain every line aloud afterwards. If she can, the help was teaching.

How does a tutor annotate a draft without crossing the IB's authenticity line?+

By pointing rather than supplying. An annotation that reads "criterion D asks you to evaluate the method; this paragraph describes it instead" tells the student what is wrong and leaves the work to them. An annotation that supplies the replacement sentence does not. In practice the student holds the keyboard throughout, methods are taught on a worked example that is not their own task, and nothing said in a session arrives in the document verbatim. The version history should show gradual change in one voice across weeks, which is what an ordinary, honest record looks like.

What does a comment about criterion B on a Chemistry investigation actually mean?+

Criterion letters refer to the published descriptors in the subject guide, and each one rewards a different kind of thinking rather than a different section of the document. In the sciences the criteria cover research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. A comment on the design criterion is usually about whether the research question fixes a measurable range and controls the obvious confounders. A comment on evaluation is about whether weaknesses are identified with a specific effect on the result, rather than listed as generic apologies. Ask the tutor to quote the descriptor; a comment that cannot be traced to one is not feedback against anything.

Can I see the version history of my child's exploration?+

You can, and it is the most informative five minutes available to a parent on this component. Any document platform keeps a revision record. What you are looking for is a gradual pattern: edits spread over weeks, in one voice, with the volume of change tapering as the deadline approaches. What should prompt a question is a thin outline followed by a finished document appearing in one sitting. You are not auditing your child. You are checking that the record tells a story they could explain to a coordinator, which protects them far more than it inconveniences them.

Three internal deadlines fall in the same fortnight at my son's Abu Dhabi school. What gets priority?+

Rank them by three things in order: the share of the subject grade, how far each document already is, and whether the remaining work needs data or only writing. A component carrying a third of a subject grade beats one carrying a fifth. A document missing its data collection cannot be rescued by a late weekend, while one needing a rewritten evaluation can. Then speak to the coordinator. Internal deadlines are set by the school, not the IB, and a compressed cluster is often an artefact of calendar-building rather than a fixed requirement. Coordinators move them more often than families expect.

What does internal assessment supervision cost per hour around Abu Dhabi?+

Published market rates put qualified online subject tutoring at roughly AED 150-300 an hour, with IB and IGCSE specialists at AED 200-450 or more; Bestimate's 2026 rate work puts visiting tutors at AED 180-350 and some home tutors as high as AED 500, and BartyED publishes AED 650 at the premium end. Document supervision tends to sit at the upper end of whichever band applies, because reading and annotating eight pages consumes preparation time outside the session. Those are market figures from the providers named, not IB Gram's prices. Ours are quoted after a free first lesson.

Why is there no in-home option in Abu Dhabi when other providers advertise one?+

Because IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India, and our country pages have said so consistently. For internal assessment work specifically that is an advantage rather than a compromise. A document is a shared object already, so two people reading the same screen with a comment thread lose nothing and gain a permanent record. More importantly, matching without a driving radius means your child gets someone who has marked their exact component, not the best available person who will travel to your area on a Tuesday.

Is my child's own subject teacher at an Abu Dhabi school allowed to take paid sessions on his investigation?+

Treat that offer as a problem. Press reporting of ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff describes a prohibition on teachers giving paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE private tuition work permit carries a code of conduct that also bars serving students affiliated with the permit-holder's own school. Verify the current wording against ADEK's own policy document before relying on it. Beyond compliance there is a straightforward conflict: the person who marks the document should not also be paid to improve it.

The data are collected but no analysis has started and there are five weeks to upload. Is that recoverable?+

Usually, yes, and more comfortably than families fear. Five weeks with data in hand is a better position than ten weeks with a vague question. The work now is sequential: process the data, decide and justify the analysis, write the conclusion against the actual numbers, then evaluate honestly. Three or four focused sessions across those five weeks is a realistic plan, with the student working between them. What is not recoverable in five weeks is a research question that cannot be answered by the data collected. That is why the first session is a read rather than a lesson.

How do I tell the difference between a tutor who is coaching and one who is quietly taking over?+

Read the annotation and listen to your child. Coaching language names a criterion and asks a question: what does this paragraph claim, and where is the evidence for it? Taking-over language supplies the answer in finished prose. The second signal is comprehension. Ask your child to explain one paragraph of the current draft aloud, without the document in front of them. If they can, the work is theirs. If they cannot explain a method or a statistical choice that appears in their own document, something has gone in that should not have, and it needs removing before submission rather than after.

Which permit must a private tutor in the UAE hold, and can a parent verify it?+

The MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023. The UAE government portal states it is granted free of charge for two years and that eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private sector employees, unemployed individuals, school students aged fifteen to eighteen and university students. Individuals tutoring without one are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, though no fine schedule is published, so disregard any figure quoted to you. Ask your tutor directly, and read MoHRE's own service page, 'Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing', for the official route.

Can supervision sessions move to post-Iftar times during Ramadan?+

Yes, and for Diploma candidates it often has to, because a stretch of the drafting period can fall inside Ramadan in any given year. Online delivery is what makes that straightforward: a slot that shifts to nine or ten in the evening costs nobody a drive across the emirate after a long fast. Many families also use the month differently, trading a weekly hour for shorter, more frequent reviews at a quieter time of night. Tell us before the month starts rather than during it, so the slot is rebooked rather than cancelled.

What happens if no specialist for my child's Higher Level component is free this term?+

You are told before you commit, with a match time and an honest description of the alternative. Abu Dhabi has no resident specialist for every Higher Level component, and the thinner pathways — Visual Arts process portfolios, the Career-related Programme reflective project, less common language A combinations — are the ones most likely to come up empty locally. Where the right person is based outside the UAE, we say so and you decide. What we will not do is hand a Visual Arts portfolio to a generalist and call it a match, which is the failure mode this disclosure exists to prevent.

Should we buy supervision for all six of my daughter's internal components?+

Almost certainly not. Rank the six by how much of the subject grade each one carries and by how shaky the draft is, then buy for the top one or two. A competent student with a sound research question often needs nothing more than a diagnostic read and a pre-upload check, which is two or three hours in total. Fortnightly supervision across a term is the right purchase when a student has genuinely stalled or when the underlying method was never taught. Spreading a budget thinly across six documents produces six lightly reviewed drafts and no movement anywhere.

Start with the draft, not with a package

If you are searching for an IB DP internal assessment home tutor in Abu Dhabi, the fastest useful step is to send the component, the level and the school's internal upload deadline, and let the first lesson be a read of whatever exists. It is free, it ends in a written note against each criterion, and it sometimes concludes that you do not need ongoing supervision at all. Lessons are one-to-one and online, on Gulf Standard Time, for families across Saadiyat Island, Al Reem Island, Khalifa City, Al Raha and the mainland communities. Nothing in the document will be written by anyone but your child.
