IB DP Mandarin B Home Tutor in Abu Dhabi

Quotes for an IB DP Mandarin B home tutor in Abu Dhabi arrive with a wider spread than almost any other Diploma subject, and the spread is not about quality. It is about supply, time zones and character workload. This page puts the AED numbers on the page, explains what moves them in this emirate specifically, and sets out what a quoted hourly rate usually excludes. Lessons run online, one-to-one, over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

IB & IGCSE in Abu Dhabi

Why two Mandarin quotes in the same emirate differ by AED 400 an hour

Ask around Abu Dhabi for Mandarin B help and the numbers that come back will range from under AED 60 an hour to over AED 600. Both ends are real. The low end is a fluent speaker, often a university student, teaching conversation. The high end is someone who has marked this course against its criteria and can tell you which of four assessments is costing the grade. Those are different products wearing the same job title.

Published rate comparisons compiled in October 2026 put the bands roughly as follows: budget online tutoring from AED 33 to AED 65 an hour on platform rate cards, qualified subject tutors working online at AED 150 to AED 300, in-home one-to-one at AED 180 to AED 350 once travel is priced in, IB and IGCSE specialists at AED 200 to AED 450 and above, and premium named tutors advertised as high as AED 650. Monthly packages appear at about AED 799 for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 for four in-home sessions of two hours. Those are market figures from published tables, not IB Gram prices.

Mandarin then sits at the upper end of whatever band it lands in, for three reasons that are specific rather than mysterious. The specialist pool in any single emirate is small. The useful tutors are frequently in East Asian time zones, where your child's 17:00 is their 21:00. And the subject carries a workload no European language has: a character set that must be produced, not merely recognised, which means more hours of a different kind.

The last point is where families most often buy the wrong thing. Character production is expensive to teach and cheap to practise. Paying a specialist rate for an hour of character drilling that a student could do alone with a spaced-repetition routine is the most common waste in this subject, and it is why a plan should separate what needs a tutor from what needs discipline.

There is also a question of what the rate includes. Two quotes at AED 220 can mean entirely different things once you ask whether marking of written work is inside the hour, whether a session note is produced, whether orals are recorded, what the cancellation terms are, and whether the figure includes any applicable tax. We publish those questions because the answers are where the real price difference sits.

Delivery in the UAE is online, one-to-one, over live video on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not run home visits in Abu Dhabi and does not send a tutor to an address in this emirate; in-home tutoring is a service we offer only in India. For Mandarin that is the arrangement that makes the specialist rate worth paying, because the specialist is rarely within driving distance of Khalifa City at 16:30.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

What a Mandarin plan costs depends mostly on where the student is starting, and in Abu Dhabi they start from three recognisably different places. These notes put each route against the hours it tends to need.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Mandarin B sits in Group 2 at Standard or Higher Level, assessed by a written paper, a listening paper, a reading paper and an individual oral, with no internal assessment. Higher Level adds two literary works and builds the oral on a literary extract. The cost consequence is direct: Higher Level needs a tutor who has read those works, which narrows the pool again and moves the quote upward.

Abu Dhabi Mandarin B cohorts are small, and in some Diploma schools the class is a handful of students covering both levels. Families here often discover in DP2 that the hours they needed were in DP1, when character production could still be built gradually. Front-loading is cheaper than rescuing, and in this subject the difference between the two is measured in hundreds of dirhams a month.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

MYP Language Acquisition places Mandarin learners in phases. A student arriving in DP1 from Phase 4 has usually met enough characters to begin Mandarin B without emergency support, and their spend goes on assessment technique rather than on the language. A Phase 2 or 3 arrival needs a character programme first, and that is a two-year cost rather than a term's.

Not every Abu Dhabi IB school offers Mandarin through MYP, and where it runs with two periods a week the character load accumulated by Year 11 is modest. Asking the school how many characters students are expected to produce by the end of MYP is a blunt question that produces a very useful number for budgeting.

HeritageAges 15-18 · Entering or inside the DP

Heritage and partial speakers

A student who speaks Mandarin at home but reads and writes little is the most common misplacement in this subject. Spoken fluency makes the oral comfortable and leaves the reading and writing components exposed. The plan is cheap in conversation hours and expensive in character hours, which is the opposite of what the family usually expects to buy.

Abu Dhabi's professional population includes families on medium-term postings from East Asia whose children have been in English-medium schooling for years. For them the placement conversation between Mandarin B and the ab initio course matters more than any tutoring decision, and it should happen before DP1 options close rather than after the first report.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Mandarin B is usually one line in a wider budget. The subjects below are what Abu Dhabi families most often fund alongside it, with the cost or scheduling consequence named.

Mandarin B

HL and SL

Four assessments, each a quarter of the grade: written paper, listening, reading and individual oral. The budget driver is character production, which must be built over terms rather than bought in weeks, and at Higher Level the two literary works, which require a tutor who has read them.

Mandarin ab initio

Standard Level only

The beginner course, Standard Level only, for a student with no prior Mandarin. Cheaper in total hours than a misplaced B registration, because a student marked against a range they do not have spends two years buying remediation instead of progress.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

The usual Group 1 pairing in this emirate. Relevant to a Mandarin budget because the two subjects compete for the same evening slots in DP2, and a family funding both needs to decide which one owns the pre-dinner hour.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Common among students aiming at technical degrees, including in Chinese-medium institutions. The AA internal assessment lands in the same term as Mandarin oral preparation in most Abu Dhabi schools, so hours bought in that window cost more in attention than in money.

Economics

HL and SL

Frequently chosen alongside Mandarin by students with an eye on regional business routes. Its internal assessment deadlines are the ones most likely to collide with a character programme, and the collision is predictable enough to plan around in DP1.

Physics

HL and SL

Taken widely in the emirate's Diploma cohorts. Physics students tend to be systematic, which suits spaced character practice unusually well, and that matters to the budget because systematic students can do more of this work without paying for it.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

Mandarin learners have sharp TOK material available, since writing systems make the relationship between language and knowledge concrete. Preparing two examples during DP1 avoids paying for TOK support later to find material the student already had.

Arabic as an additional language

School-mandated streams

UAE private schools teach Arabic alongside their licensed curriculum, so a Mandarin B student here is building two unfamiliar writing systems at once. That is the strongest argument in this subject for separating practice across days rather than funding more hours.

Extended Essay

Core · 4,000 words

May be registered in Mandarin B and written in Mandarin, which is a demanding choice that suits a strong Higher Level candidate. The budget point is blunt: an essay in Mandarin consumes the exact hours the language itself needed, so it is rarely the economical route.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three delivery patterns are worth pricing separately, because they buy different things. The cheapest hour is not the cheapest plan if it is spent on work the student could have done without a tutor.

Specialist hours on assessment technique

One 60-minute session a week with a tutor who has marked this course, spent on the components that need expertise: text-type conventions in the written paper, reading technique on authentic texts, and the oral. This is the expensive hour and the one worth paying the specialist band for, because nobody can self-teach criterion-level feedback.

  • Timed written work marked against criterion letters
  • Reading technique with timings recorded, not general comprehension
  • Recorded oral rehearsal on unseen material

Character practice the student runs alone

Daily spaced practice of character production, managed by the student with a routine set once and checked periodically. There is no reason to buy this at a specialist rate. Reviewing the routine every few weeks inside an existing session costs nothing extra and is the single largest saving available in this subject.

  • A production target set per term, not a vague instruction to revise
  • Spaced repetition with handwritten output rather than recognition only
  • Checked in session every three or four weeks, not taught weekly

Short intensive blocks before assessments

Four to six sessions compressed ahead of school mocks or the oral window, priced as a block rather than an open commitment. Blocks suit this subject because the expensive work is diagnostic: timed papers marked properly, then two or three targets named for the weeks that follow.

  • Full timed papers in the first two sessions of the block
  • A written list of the highest-cost error classes afterwards
  • A self-run revision sequence for the gap until the next block

IB and IGCSE tutors available to students in Abu Dhabi

The tutors shown here have taught Mandarin B as an assessed IB course rather than Mandarin as a language. That distinction is the main thing an Abu Dhabi family is paying for, because native fluency is widely available at a low hourly rate and criterion-level marking of a Mandarin B script is not.

01

What Mandarin B support actually costs in Abu Dhabi, in AED

A Mandarin B tutor in this market will quote somewhere between about AED 60 and AED 650 an hour, and the number tells you which product is being sold rather than how good it is. Published rate comparisons compiled in October 2026 give the bands, and publishing them is the whole point of this section: three of six competitor pages reviewed for this market quote no price at all, and the two that do quote in US dollars, which is not the currency a family here transacts in.

The bands break down by what the tutor is. Platform rate cards advertise from AED 33 to AED 65 an hour for budget online tutoring, generally university students teaching conversation. Qualified subject tutors working online are published at AED 150 to AED 300. In-home one-to-one sits at AED 180 to AED 350 because travel time is inside the fee. IB and IGCSE specialists are quoted at AED 200 to AED 450 and above, and premium named tutors have been advertised at AED 650.

Monthly structures matter more than hourly ones for budgeting. Online monthly packages appear from about AED 799 for eight sessions; in-home monthly packages at AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 for four two-hour visits. A published market estimate for weekly one-hour sessions runs AED 240 to AED 600 a month at the budget end, AED 600 to AED 1,200 in the middle, and AED 1,000 to AED 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support.

All of these are market figures taken from published rate tables and competitor pages, not IB Gram prices, and they are reproduced here so a family can read a quote against something. IB Gram's own position is that the trial lesson is free with no card required, and the rate for continuing work is discussed in that consultation rather than published as a single number, because a four-session character block and a two-year Higher Level plan are not the same purchase.

Five things that move a Mandarin quote in this emirate

The spread between AED 150 and AED 450 for apparently the same hour is not arbitrary, and a family that understands the drivers can usually place itself in the band deliberately rather than accidentally. Five things do most of the work, and four of them are negotiable.

Supply is the first and the least negotiable. Mandarin B is a minority Diploma subject in Abu Dhabi, so the number of people who have taught and marked it here is small; at Higher Level, where two literary works must be discussed, it is smaller again. Scarcity sets the floor, and no amount of comparison shopping within one emirate changes it.

Time zone is the second and is directly negotiable. Many of the strongest Mandarin B tutors are in East Asian time zones, four or more hours ahead of Gulf Standard Time, which turns your child's convenient 17:00 slot into their 21:00. Slots that are comfortable at both ends are priced lower than slots that require someone to work late, and a family willing to take an early morning weekend slot often buys the same tutor for less.

Then there is level, format and what the rate includes. Higher Level costs more than Standard because the pool shrinks. A pair or small group lowers the per-student rate and raises the risk if the two students are not at the same point. And a rate that includes marking of timed written work, a session note and recorded orals is a different product from one that does not, which is why the comparison should be made on inclusions rather than on the headline figure.

03

The character workload is the line item nobody prices

Mandarin B differs from every European language option in one expensive respect: the writing system must be produced, not merely recognised. A student can read a character they cannot write, and the written paper requires writing. That asymmetry is the real workload, it accumulates over terms rather than weeks, and it is where a two-year budget is decided.

The common and costly mistake is to pay a specialist rate to supervise it. Character production is built by frequent, short, spaced practice with handwritten output, which a disciplined sixteen-year-old can run alone once the routine is set. Buying that hour weekly at AED 250 is paying a consultant to watch someone do press-ups.

What does need the specialist is everything the student cannot judge for themselves: whether a written response meets the text-type conventions, why a reading answer lost its mark, whether an oral response is developing or circling, and which of the four components is actually costing the grade. That is the hour worth the band, and it is roughly one hour a week, not three.

Timing matters as much as rate. Character work started in DP1 is cheap because it rides on time the student already has; the same work attempted in the second term of DP2 competes with internal assessments in five other subjects and usually has to be bought in intensive blocks at the worst moment. Front-loading a minority language is not enthusiasm — it is cost control.

04

What a quoted hourly rate usually leaves out

Two tutors quoting AED 220 can be offering products that differ by half their value, and the difference is almost never in the teaching. It is in what happens around the hour. Families who ask five questions in writing before booking generally end up paying less for more, which is why the questions are listed here rather than left as a negotiating advantage.

First, marking. Is written work marked outside the session, with criterion letters, or is session time used to read it? The second is a quiet way of charging teaching time for administration. Second, session notes: is there a written record of what was tested, what was taught and what was set, or does the arrangement depend on everybody remembering?

Third, recordings for oral work, which in a language course are not a luxury: a student cannot hear their own hesitation. Fourth, cancellation terms, which matter in a city with school trips, Ramadan timing changes and family travel. Fifth, tax treatment — ask plainly whether the quoted figure includes any applicable tax, and get the answer in writing. We make no statement here about how tuition is treated for UAE VAT, because that is a question for the Federal Tax Authority's own guidance rather than for a tutoring page.

One further question is worth asking anybody, at any rate: whether they hold the MoHRE private tuition work permit. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, the permit is granted free of charge for two years, and individuals offering private tutoring without one are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. A tutor who does not know what you are asking about is telling you something useful.

05

A tutoring dirham in context: what a term and a two-year plan come to

Hourly rates are hard to think about and term totals are easy, so the arithmetic is worth doing once. The figures below are built from the published market bands rather than from an IB Gram price list, and they assume a thirteen-week term, which is roughly what Abu Dhabi school terms run to.

One session a week at the qualified-tutor band of AED 150 to AED 300 comes to roughly AED 1,950 to AED 3,900 a term. Two sessions a week doubles it. A four-session diagnostic block before mocks is AED 600 to AED 1,200 at the same band. A Higher Level oral block of six sessions at specialist rates of AED 200 to AED 450 lands between AED 1,200 and AED 2,700.

Across the full Diploma, a family running one weekly session in DP1 and two in DP2 with two intensive blocks is looking at a four-figure commitment per term and a five-figure one across two years at the specialist end. That is a real number and it deserves to be seen before the first booking rather than assembled invoice by invoice.

Set against that, the cheapest intervention in this subject costs nothing: a character routine the student runs daily from the start of DP1. Families who do that consistently buy roughly half the hours of families who do not, which is the only genuine saving available here. Everything else is a choice about which band to buy from.

Online against in-home for Mandarin, and what travel costs you

In-home tutoring is a genuine market here and for most subjects it is well supplied. For Mandarin B it often is not, particularly outside the island and the central districts, and particularly at Higher Level. The published in-home band of AED 180 to AED 350 an hour exists because travel time is inside the fee, and in a city with long mainland commutes that loading is substantial.

IB Gram does not sell that service in the UAE. We do not send a tutor to an Abu Dhabi address and we do not run home visits in Abu Dhabi; in-home tuition is a service we offer only in India. Every lesson here is one-to-one online, over live video, on Gulf Standard Time. Publishing that plainly saves a family the first phone call.

For this subject the comparison is not close. Online, the pool is every Mandarin B specialist free at your hour, including those who have read the Higher Level works. In-home, the pool is whoever can reach your community by the time your child is home, which in Mohammed Bin Zayed City or Al Falah may be nobody with Diploma experience at all. The rate difference is the smaller part of the gap.

There is one honest point in the other direction, and families raise it fairly: handwriting. Characters are written by hand and a tutor on a screen cannot watch a pen. The practical answer is a phone propped above the page for a live view of the hand during the sessions where formation matters, plus photographed scripts marked and returned dated. That is better evidence than a correction in a notebook, though it is a workaround rather than a denial of the problem.

07

Where Mandarin money gets wasted, in order of frequency

  • Conversation hours for a student whose weakness is reading or writing
  • Specialist rates spent supervising repetition the student can run alone
  • Starting in DP2 what needed the spacing of DP1
  • Hiring fluency rather than course experience
  • Comparing headline rates without comparing marking, notes and recordings

The most frequent waste is buying conversation for a student whose problem is the page. A heritage speaker with fluent spoken Mandarin and a weak reading score will have a pleasant hour discussing topics in Mandarin and no change in their grade, because three of the four assessments involve the written language. The hour felt productive and bought nothing.

The second is paying specialist rates for repetition. Character production and vocabulary recognition are self-run work. A tutor should set the routine, check it periodically and spend the paid hour on things requiring judgement. A plan where most of the session is drilling is a plan where most of the fee is unnecessary.

The third is timing: buying in DP2 what was needed in DP1. Nothing in this subject can be compressed safely, because character production depends on spacing rather than intensity. Families who start in the second term of DP2 end up buying intensive blocks at the worst possible moment, competing with internal assessment deadlines in five other subjects.

The fourth is the simplest to avoid: hiring a fluent speaker who has never seen the course. Native fluency is widely available at the bottom of the rate card and is not the scarce commodity. What is scarce is somebody who can look at a written response and say which criterion lost the mark. That is what the premium is for, and it is the only part of the quote worth paying a premium for.

08

The permit question, and the rule about your child's own teacher

Before money changes hands it is worth knowing who may legally take it. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated: the MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, it is granted free of charge for two years, and eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18, and university students. Applications go through MoHRE's own service, listed as private tutor licensing, with no fee.

Those who offer private tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No fine schedule has been published, so no amount should be quoted to you by anyone, including us. The useful question for a parent is simply whether the person holds the permit, and the useful follow-up is whether they can say which resolution it comes under.

There is a second rule specific to this emirate. Press reporting on ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff indicates that teachers are prohibited from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and that the permit's code of conduct also bars serving students affiliated with the teacher's own school. Verify the current wording against ADEK's own policy document before relying on it, but the direction is clear enough: arranging paid tuition from your child's own class teacher is not the shortcut it appears to be.

None of this makes IB Gram a licensed or approved anything. We hold no accreditation from ADEK, the Ministry of Education, MoHRE, the IB or any examination board, we operate no office or centre in the UAE, and we would not claim otherwise. What we can do is name the rules, point to the official channel, and tell you what questions to ask whoever you hire.

Where we tutor

What the hour costs by where you live in Abu Dhabi

In an in-home market, the quote depends on your address, because travel time is inside the rate. Online that disappears, but the useful slot still depends on the commute. Each note below is about what the local position does to the number.

Khalifa City

Villa communities with long return journeys from the island schools. In-home quotes here carry the emirate's heaviest travel loading, and the online alternative converts that loading into a second contact in the same week.

Saadiyat Island

Short runs and early finishes mean in-home tutors can reach families here between bookings, so quoted rates sit closer to the base band. It is also the easiest part of the emirate to hold an early slot, which matters for oral work.

Al Reem Island

Late-afternoon bridge congestion means an in-home tutor arriving for 17:00 has often lost thirty minutes getting there, and that time is paid for somewhere. Online removes it from the invoice entirely.

Al Bateen and Al Khalidiyah

Central and well supplied, so this is where in-home Mandarin is most likely to be available at all. Even here the question is whether the available tutor has taught the Diploma course or simply speaks the language.

Al Raha Beach and Al Raha Gardens

Compound living with heavy after-school activity schedules. Families here most often ask for 18:30, which is workable for a tutor in a Gulf time zone and awkward for one in East Asia, where it is already late evening.

Yas Island and West Yas

Newer corridor, longer internal distances than they look, and relatively few local language specialists. Weekend blocks are common here, and a longer weekend slot is the cheapest way to buy timed paper practice.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City and Shakhbout City

Mainland communities where in-home availability for a minority language thins out quickly. The practical choice is usually online or nothing, which makes the comparison table below the relevant one rather than the rate table.

Masdar City and Al Falah

Furthest from the established school clusters, with the longest travel loadings in any in-home quote. Online delivery means a family here pays the same rate as one on Saadiyat, which is not true of any visiting arrangement.

School ecosystem

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Say what the school examines and at what level

Two facts change the search before any money is discussed: whether the school examines in simplified or traditional characters, and whether your child is Standard or Higher Level. If Higher Level, the two literary works matter, because the tutor needs to have read them.

  2. 02

Free trial lesson, and a written estimate of hours

The trial is free with no card required and no obligation. It produces a short timed writing sample, a cold reading score and a view of character production, from which you get a written estimate of how many hours are specialist work and how many are self-run.

  3. 03

Split the plan into paid and unpaid work

The plan names explicitly which work needs a tutor and which the student runs alone, with a daily character target. Families who follow the split buy roughly half the hours of those who do not, and that is the main saving available in this subject.

Agree the inclusions, not just the rate

Before booking, confirm in writing what is inside the fee: marking of timed work with criterion letters, a written session note, recorded orals, and the cancellation terms. Ask whether any applicable tax is included. These are where two identical rates diverge.

  5. 05

Book in blocks and review at the end of each

Work runs in short blocks against named targets with a cold retest at the end. Lessons are online, one-to-one, over live video on Gulf Standard Time. Continuing is a decision made on the retest result rather than a standing arrangement nobody reviews.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The numbers are on the page

Market bands in AED, attributed to published rate comparisons with the month stated, rather than a contact form where the price lives. Three of six competitor pages reviewed for this market publish no figure at all and two quote in US dollars.

We tell you what not to pay for

Character production and vocabulary recognition are self-run work with a routine set once and checked periodically. Buying those hours at a specialist rate is the most common waste in this subject, and saying so costs us hours we could otherwise bill.

Quotes compared on inclusions

Marking outside the session with criterion letters, a written session note, recorded orals, and clear cancellation terms. Two quotes at the same rate are rarely the same product, and the difference is usually in this list.

Online delivery, said before you book

Every UAE lesson runs over live video on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send a tutor to an Abu Dhabi address and runs no home visits in this emirate; that service exists only in India. For a scarce specialism it is also the arrangement that makes the premium worth paying.

The permit question asked out loud

Private tuition in the UAE needs the MoHRE permit under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, granted free of charge for two years. We name it, point to the official route, and quote no fine amounts, because none are published.

No claims we cannot support

No accreditation from any regulator or board, no UAE office, no examiner status asserted without evidence, no promised grades, and no statistics without a stated method. In a market full of unsourced numbers, that is the differentiator worth having.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

Why do Mandarin tutors in Abu Dhabi quote so much more than French or Spanish tutors?+

Three reasons, all structural. The pool of people who have taught and marked IB Mandarin B in one emirate is small, and smaller again at Higher Level where two literary works must be discussed. Many of the strongest tutors sit in East Asian time zones, so a Gulf evening slot means late-evening work for them, which carries a premium. And the subject needs more contact hours overall because characters must be produced rather than recognised. Published market bands put qualified online tutors at AED 150 to AED 300 and specialists at AED 200 to AED 450 or more.

What should a Mandarin B hour include for the rate to be fair?+

Marking of timed written work outside the session with criterion letters on it, a written session note recording what was tested and set, recorded oral rehearsals, and stated cancellation terms. Ask whether any applicable tax is included and get the answer in writing. Two quotes at AED 220 can differ by half their value on those four items alone. If written work is read during the session, you are paying teaching rates for administration, which is the most common hidden cost in this market.

Can we lower the cost by taking a slot that suits the tutor's time zone?+

Often substantially, and it is the most reliable discount available in this subject. Gulf Standard Time runs about four hours behind Beijing, so a weekday 17:00 slot in Abu Dhabi is 21:00 for a tutor in East Asia and is priced accordingly. An early weekend morning in Abu Dhabi, or a slot before school, lands in a tutor's comfortable afternoon. Families who offer that flexibility frequently get a more experienced tutor at a lower rate than those who insist on the convenient hour.

How many Mandarin B hours should we budget across the two Diploma years?+

At published market bands, one weekly session in DP1 and two in DP2 plus two intensive blocks is a four-figure commitment per term and a five-figure one across the Diploma at the specialist end. A thirteen-week term at AED 150 to AED 300 an hour is roughly AED 1,950 to AED 3,900 for one session a week. The honest variable is character debt: a student who runs daily production practice from the start of DP1 typically needs about half the paid hours of one who does not.

Is a small group cheaper than one-to-one for Mandarin B?+

Per student, yes, and published market tables show group rates well below one-to-one. The condition is that the students are at the same point in the character workload, which in Mandarin is unusually unforgiving. Two candidates who can produce different numbers of characters cannot do the same written task productively, and the group ends up pitched to one of them. A pair works when both are at the same level and the same stage; beyond that it saves money by delivering less.

Does my child need to know whether the school examines simplified or traditional characters?+

Yes, and it is the first question to settle, because it decides which tutors are usable at all. The school sets this, so the answer comes from the Mandarin teacher or DP coordinator. A tutor trained in one system teaching a student examined in the other wastes both the hour and the practice between sessions. Ask before paying for anything. It is also worth asking whether any classmates are being examined in the other system, because that affects how the class is taught.

Should we pay a tutor to supervise character practice?+

No. Character production is built by short, frequent, spaced practice with handwritten output, and a disciplined sixteen-year-old runs that alone once the routine is set. Paying AED 250 an hour to watch it happen is the single largest waste in this subject. What needs the specialist is judgement: whether a written response meets its text-type conventions, why a reading answer lost a mark, whether an oral is developing. Set the routine, check it every few weeks inside an existing session, and spend the paid hour on the rest.

Is it cheaper to start Mandarin support in DP1 or wait until DP2?+

DP1 is cheaper, and by a wide margin. Character production depends on spacing rather than intensity, so it cannot be compressed safely into a short period. Families who start in the second term of DP2 end up buying intensive blocks at the worst moment, competing with internal assessment deadlines in several other subjects, and paying specialist rates for work that would have ridden on spare time a year earlier. Front-loading a minority language is cost control rather than enthusiasm.

Does a tutor need a licence to charge for Mandarin lessons in Abu Dhabi?+

Individuals providing private tuition in the UAE need the MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students, and school students aged 15 to 18. Those operating without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published, so nobody should quote you an amount. Ask any tutor whether they hold it.

Can we hire my daughter's own Mandarin teacher privately?+

In Abu Dhabi that is the wrong route. Press reporting on ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff indicates teachers are prohibited from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE permit's code of conduct also bars serving students affiliated with the teacher's own school. Verify the current wording against ADEK's own policy before relying on it. Beyond the rules, it is a poor idea in practice, because the person marking your child's class work should not also be paid to improve it.

Does IB Gram send a Mandarin tutor to our home in Abu Dhabi, and what would that add to the cost?+

No. IB Gram does not run home visits in Abu Dhabi or anywhere in the UAE, and no tutor is sent to an address here; in-home tutoring is a service we offer only in India. For reference, published market comparisons put in-home visits at roughly AED 180 to AED 350 an hour against AED 150 to AED 300 for a qualified online tutor, with the gap largely travel time. In Mandarin the bigger issue is not the premium but whether anyone with Diploma experience can reach your community at all.

Before we commit to Mandarin hours, what does the free trial lesson cover?+

It is one session at no charge, with no card required and no obligation to continue. It runs as a working diagnostic rather than a sales call: a short timed writing sample, a cold reading score, and a look at character production. Afterwards you receive a written estimate of how many hours are specialist work and how many the student should run alone. You keep that estimate whether or not you book. The only condition is one trial per student, which we state because a free offer with unstated conditions is not free.

Are Mandarin rates higher during the exam term?+

In this market, generally yes at the specialist end, because demand concentrates in the months before the May session while supply does not change. Published market estimates for specialist exam-year support run AED 1,000 to AED 2,000 or more a month against AED 600 to AED 1,200 for mid-range support. The implication for budgeting is to book the exam-term block early rather than shopping for it in the same fortnight as everyone else, and to use the cheaper earlier terms for the work that needs spacing anyway.

Is paying for a Higher Level Mandarin tutor worth it for one extra point?+

That arithmetic is yours to do, and the honest answer is that nobody can promise a point. What can be said is where the money has the clearest effect: the Higher Level oral, built on an extract from one of the two literary works, is the component where an unprepared candidate loses most and where self-study helps least, because it needs a conversation partner who knows the works. If the budget covers one block in the Diploma, that is usually the block. Expect a reasoned recommendation rather than a prediction.

How do we compare two Mandarin quotes properly?+

Put them side by side on seven items rather than on the hourly figure: the rate, whether marking happens outside the session with criterion letters, whether a written session note is produced, whether orals are recorded, the cancellation terms, whether any applicable tax is included, and whether the tutor holds the MoHRE permit. Then ask each one which of the four Mandarin B components they would work on first and why. The answer to that last question separates people who have taught the course from people who speak the language.

See the numbers first, then decide which hours to buy

If you are pricing an IB DP Mandarin B home tutor in Abu Dhabi, start by reading any quote against the published market bands on this page rather than against another quote. Then take the free trial lesson, which costs nothing, needs no card and carries no obligation, and which produces a written estimate splitting the plan into specialist hours and work your child runs alone. That split is where the money is saved. Lessons run online, one-to-one, over live video on Gulf Standard Time, and the character routine that halves the bill starts the same week.
