IB DP Hindi B Home Tutor in Abu Dhabi

Families hiring an IB DP Hindi B home tutor in Abu Dhabi are usually holding a report that says one thing and a mock result that says another. This page is about the paperwork in between: which quarter of the grade is actually leaking, which Hindi register the examiner is using, and what a termly progress file should contain before anyone recommends a second year of weekly hours. Lessons run online, one-to-one, over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

  • A dated progress file per term: artefacts, raw scores, predicted grade movement
  • Formal written Hindi taught as a separate register from spoken household Hindi
  • Scripts photographed, marked and returned with the criterion letter written on

IB & IGCSE in Abu Dhabi

The Hindi B problem is a register problem with a paperwork solution

Hindi B sits in Group 2 of the Diploma as a language acquisition course, available at Standard and Higher Level, assessed by a written paper, a listening paper, a reading paper and an individual oral. Four assessments, no internal assessment, no coursework. Everything is produced in a handful of hours at the end of two years, which is why a family can feel confident all the way to a mock and then be surprised.

In Abu Dhabi the typical candidate is a student from an Indian-heritage family who speaks Hindi at home, switched to an English-medium curriculum years ago, and chose Hindi B as a sensible sixth subject. That student arrives with enormous spoken fluency and a narrow slice of the written language, and the gap between the two is not obvious to anyone until a marked script appears.

The reason is that Hindi exists on the page in a register the household rarely uses. Formal written Hindi draws heavily on Sanskritised vocabulary; everyday spoken Hindi in the Gulf is mixed with English and with Urdu-derived words and pronounced with regional habits. Both are legitimate Hindi. Only one of them is being marked. A student writing a report in the language they use with their grandmother has produced good communication and the wrong register.

The second cost is reading speed. The reading paper uses authentic texts, which in Hindi means newspaper prose, formal letters and public-information writing — exactly the varieties a student who speaks Hindi daily may never have read. Decoding Devanagari at speed is a trained skill, and a student decoding slowly runs out of time on questions they could have answered.

So this page is organised around evidence rather than reassurance, because in a language a parent may speak fluently and read rarely, instinct is unreliable in both directions. Each term produces a file: raw scores on a cold reading and listening paper, a marked written script with the criterion letter on it, a recorded oral, and the school's predicted grade. Three such files across the Diploma make a trend that nobody has to interpret generously.

Delivery in the UAE is online, one-to-one, over live video on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not run home visits in Abu Dhabi and does not send a tutor to an address in this emirate; in-home tutoring is a service we offer only in India. Handwritten Devanagari is still marked, by photograph and screen share, and the section on that below explains the mechanics rather than asserting it works.

Market rates are worth knowing before any quote arrives. Published comparisons put a qualified subject tutor working online in this market at roughly AED 150 to AED 300 an hour, in-home visits at around AED 180 to AED 350, and monthly online packages from about AED 799 for eight sessions. Hindi speakers are plentiful in Abu Dhabi, so quotes at the lower end are common; people who have marked IB Hindi B against its own criteria are considerably rarer, and that is the skill the hour is actually for.

At a glance

  • Formal written Hindi is a different register from household spoken Hindi
  • The reading paper uses authentic newspaper and public-information prose
  • Devanagari decoding speed is trainable and directly worth marks
  • Higher Level adds two literary works and a longer written response
  • Each term closes with raw scores, a marked script and a recorded oral on file
  • Lessons are online one-to-one; no tutor is sent to an Abu Dhabi address
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Hindi B candidates in Abu Dhabi arrive from three distinct schooling histories, and each one produces a different shaped gap. These notes describe what each route leaves a student holding at the start of DP1.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects over two years with Hindi B available in Group 2 at Standard or Higher Level. Both levels sit a written paper, a listening paper, a reading paper and an individual oral; Higher Level adds two literary works, a longer written response and an oral built on a literary extract. The Group 2 grade counts towards the Diploma total like any other subject.

Abu Dhabi Hindi B groups are often small and sometimes combine levels, and in a few schools the course runs with a teacher whose main subject is something else. None of that is a scandal — it is what small cohorts produce — but it changes what outside support should do. Ask the DP coordinator whether SL and HL are taught separately and whether the HL works have been selected.

CBSEAges 14-16 · Entering DP1

Transfers from CBSE or ICSE schooling

A student who studied Hindi as a second or third language to Class 10 under an Indian board brings real written foundations: Devanagari fluency, grammar taught explicitly, and exposure to formal registers. What they often lack is the IB's assessment logic — text types, prescribed themes, and an oral that rewards discussion rather than recitation.

Abu Dhabi has a substantial Indian-curriculum school population alongside its IB and British schools, and transfers into DP1 from Indian boards are routine in this emirate. Those students are usually the strongest Hindi B candidates in the room and the ones most likely to underperform in the first term, because they are being assessed on a structure nobody has explained to them yet.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

MYP Language Acquisition runs in phases, and Hindi is offered in some but not all Abu Dhabi continuum schools. A student finishing in Phase 4 or above moves into Hindi B comfortably. The characteristic MYP gap is accuracy under timed conditions, since MYP tasks reward communication and Hindi B rewards control inside a form.

Where an Abu Dhabi school does not offer Hindi in MYP, students arrive in DP1 having had no formal Hindi instruction since primary school while speaking it daily at home. That profile needs written and reading work almost exclusively, and spending the first term on conversation practice with it is the most common way a year of tuition produces no grade movement.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Hindi B is usually one line on a longer tutoring request. Below are the subjects Abu Dhabi families most often pair with it and what each pairing actually asks for.

Hindi B

HL and SL

Written paper, listening paper, reading paper and individual oral, each a quarter of the grade. Marks leave through register slips into spoken Hindi, slow Devanagari decoding in the reading paper, missing text-type conventions, and at HL through summarising a literary extract instead of discussing it.

Hindi A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

A Group 1 course for a student whose Hindi is a first language in the full sense: literary analysis, comparative study, examinations in Hindi. Rarely offered in Abu Dhabi, and the wrong destination for most household speakers, who read far less than they speak.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

The usual Group 1 pairing here. The analytical structures transfer well to the Hindi B oral at HL, where the task is to argue rather than retell, and the register discipline transfers in the opposite direction more usefully than families expect.

Business Management

HL and SL

Common in Abu Dhabi Diploma cohorts. Its internal assessment lands in the same window as Hindi oral preparation in most schools, so the two need to be sequenced on a calendar in DP1 rather than negotiated in a panic in DP2.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

The frequent Group 5 choice alongside a language. Students comfortable with AI often have strong procedural habits, which transfer directly to reading-paper technique: scan, locate, manipulate, move on rather than translate from the beginning.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Taken widely by Abu Dhabi students aiming at medicine and engineering. Chemistry rewards precise definition, which helps with Hindi vocabulary discipline and hurts in the oral, where a candidate waits to be certain before speaking and loses interaction marks.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

Bilingual students carry ready-made TOK examples: what is lost in translation, how a claim behaves differently in two languages, why a proverb resists rendering. Planting two such examples in DP1 saves a scramble for material before the exhibition.

Arabic as an additional language

School-mandated streams

UAE private schools must teach Arabic alongside their licensed curriculum, so a Hindi B student in Abu Dhabi is formally studying two additional languages. Two non-Latin scripts in the same week is a real load, and separating the revision by a day improves retention in both.

Extended Essay

Core · 4,000 words

May be registered in Hindi B and written in Hindi. It suits a confident HL candidate and punishes a borderline one, since the essay consumes exactly the hours the language itself needed. An essay in English about Hindi literature is a different, and usually safer, proposition.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three patterns cover nearly every Hindi B plan we are asked for in this emirate, and they differ in the evidence they leave behind rather than in price.

Reading and decoding sprints

Two short sessions a week built around timed authentic texts: a news report, a public notice, a formal letter. The measurement is seconds per question and raw score, taken cold and recorded, because Devanagari decoding speed improves on frequency rather than on long sessions. This is usually the cheapest grade movement available to a household speaker.

  • A timed authentic text every session, score and timing logged
  • Unknown-word tolerance trained deliberately rather than avoided
  • No translation permitted during the task; discussion afterwards

Register and written-accuracy work

A weekly 60-minute session on formal written Hindi: the Sanskritised vocabulary the examiner expects, the text-type conventions each task demands, and the places where spoken habits leak into writing. One short piece is written under time each week and returned marked with the criterion letter and the error class named.

  • A formal-register word bank built by the student, not supplied
  • One timed written piece a week, marked and filed
  • Register slips counted per hundred words so the trend is visible

Oral and Higher Level literary preparation

Sessions recorded and replayed, working from unseen material: a visual stimulus at Standard Level, an extract from one of the two studied works at Higher Level. The conversation half is rehearsed before the presentation half, since that is the order in which marks are lost, and the recordings make hesitation countable rather than debatable.

  • Unseen stimulus or extract under timed preparation each session
  • Follow-up questions pitched one band above current performance
  • Recordings kept in the shared folder for the termly comparison

IB and IGCSE tutors available to students in Abu Dhabi

The tutors here read and mark formal written Hindi, which is a narrower skill than speaking it. For a Diploma candidate that distinction is the whole game: the examiner is reading Devanagari prose in a register most Gulf-raised students never produce at home, and a fluent speaker is not automatically a reader of it.

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Abu Dhabi

01

Which quarter of the Hindi B grade is actually leaking

Hindi B produces four marks and no coursework: a written response, a listening score, a reading score and an oral. Each is a quarter of the total. The first job with any new family is not teaching — it is finding out which of the four is costing the grade, because the four respond to completely different work and the wrong diagnosis wastes a term.

Most schools can supply the component breakdown from a mock if asked directly, and most parents have never asked. A single percentage for Hindi hides the shape of the problem entirely. A candidate on 70 in writing and 38 in reading has a reading problem that looks like a Hindi problem, and no amount of grammar work will shift it.

The household-speaker profile has a signature. Oral marks are usually the strongest, listening is adequate, writing is middling, and reading is the lowest of the four, often by a wide margin. The CBSE-transfer profile is almost the inverse: strong writing and reading, weaker oral interaction, and listening that drops on unfamiliar accents. Those two profiles need opposite plans, and they are frequently sitting next to each other in the same Abu Dhabi classroom.

Once the leak is located, the first fix is nearly always narrower than families expect. Reading responds to timed practice on authentic texts and to explicit unknown-word tolerance. Writing responds to register work and text-type conventions. Oral interaction responds to recorded conversation on unseen material. Listening responds to volume of exposure. Each has a measurable before-and-after, which is what makes the plan auditable.

02

Two Hindis in one household: the register the examiner is reading

The single most useful thing an Abu Dhabi family can understand about this course is that the Hindi spoken in the car and the Hindi printed in a newspaper are different registers with different vocabularies. Formal written Hindi leans on Sanskrit-derived words; conversational Gulf Hindi mixes in English freely and uses a great many Urdu-derived words that are entirely natural in speech and out of place in a formal report.

This is not a judgement about correctness. Both registers are real Hindi and the spoken one is more widely used. It is a statement about what is being assessed. A candidate who writes a formal letter using the vocabulary of family conversation has communicated successfully and has not demonstrated the range the mark scheme is looking for, and will be marked accordingly.

The work is therefore additive rather than corrective. Nobody needs to stop speaking the Hindi they speak. The student builds a formal-register bank — the written forms, the compound verbs, the connectives that signal formal argument — and learns to switch into it deliberately for Paper 1 and out of it for the oral, where a natural spoken register is appropriate. Switching is the skill; purity is not the goal.

There is one more layer that catches students out: Devanagari conventions that never arise in speech. Nasalisation marks, the correct forms of borrowed sounds, and the matra errors that a fluent speaker makes precisely because they are writing what they hear. These are quick to fix once counted, and counting them per hundred words is how a parent sees the trend rather than taking it on trust.

HINDI REGISTER LAYERS — WHAT A GULF-RAISED SPEAKER USUALLY HAS, AND WHAT THE PAPER WANTS
Register layerWhere the candidate meets itWhat the examiner expects of itHow it is built in sessions
Household spoken HindiDaily conversation at home and with extended familyAppropriate in the oral; out of register in a formal written taskNamed as a strength, then explicitly separated from written work
English-mixed Gulf HindiFriends, television, the school corridorTreated as a lapse of register when it appears in Paper 1Counted per hundred words so the student can hear their own switching
Formal written HindiNewspapers, notices, formal letters, school textbooksThe baseline register for the written paperA word bank the student builds from authentic texts, not a handout

Devanagari written conventionsOnly in writing; invisible in speechAccuracy marks in every written componentMatra and nasalisation errors logged by class and retested cold
03

The reading paper is where household speakers lose most

The reading component uses authentic Hindi texts, which means they were written for Hindi readers and not for learners. Newspaper prose, public-information writing, formal correspondence. They contain words the candidate has never met and sentence structures the spoken language does not use, and the task is not to understand everything but to locate and manipulate specific information under time.

A student who speaks Hindi daily and reads it rarely approaches this paper the only way they know: start at the beginning, understand each sentence, then answer. Under timed conditions that strategy fails twice over. It consumes the clock on the first text and it leaves the easy marks on the last text unattempted. The student concludes that their Hindi is weak when their procedure is wrong.

The replacement procedure is explicit and takes about four sessions to install. Read the questions first. Scan for the locating words. Accept that a proportion of the vocabulary will be unknown and answer around it. Answer in the order of difficulty rather than the order on the paper. Then, and only then, go back for the harder inference questions with whatever time remains.

Measurement here is unusually clean, which makes it ideal for a progress file. Take a cold paper, record the raw score and the seconds per question. Install the procedure. Take a comparable paper four weeks later under identical conditions. The two numbers either moved or they did not, and nobody has to form an opinion about whether the sessions felt productive.

04

The progress file: what a term of Hindi B evidence looks like

A progress file is four pieces of paper per term, and it exists because a parent cannot judge a Hindi script by looking at it, even a parent who speaks Hindi fluently. Reading formal Devanagari prose for register and accuracy is a trained activity, and most households do not contain someone who does it professionally. The file substitutes documentation for instinct.

What goes in it: the raw score and timing from a cold reading paper, the raw score from a full listening paper, one marked written script with the criterion letter and the error classes named, and a recorded oral attempt on unseen material. Plus the school's current predicted grade, written down with the date, because predictions move and nobody remembers what they were in October.

The comparison is the point. The same four measurements, under the same conditions, three times across the Diploma: early DP1, end of DP1, and midway through DP2 before the oral window. Three data points make a line. One data point makes an argument, and two make a coincidence. A tutor recommending a second year of weekly sessions should be able to show you the line.

The file also exposes the uncomfortable cases honestly. A student whose reading score has climbed twenty raw marks while their predicted grade has not moved is telling you something useful: either the prediction lags the evidence, which is a conversation with the school, or the gains are in a component the school weights differently. Both are better than a shrug, and neither is visible without the paperwork.

Handwritten Devanagari in an online lesson: how it is actually marked

The fair objection to online delivery in this subject is specific and worth answering properly: Hindi B written work is handwritten in Devanagari, and a tutor on a screen cannot look over a student's shoulder at a page. Families raise it constantly and the dismissive answer — that technology solves everything — deserves the scepticism it gets.

What actually happens is unglamorous and works. The student writes on paper under time, exactly as in the examination, then photographs the page and drops it into the shared folder. The tutor marks the image, writes the criterion letter and the error class on it, and returns it. In the next session the marked page is on screen for both of them, scrolled and annotated live. The artefact is better than what a kitchen-table lesson produces, because it is dated, stored and comparable.

For the mechanical side of handwriting — matra placement, letter formation, spacing — a phone propped above the page gives a live view of the hand while writing, which is the one thing a screen share cannot do on its own. That is a five-dirham piece of equipment and a two-minute setup, and it is used in the sessions where formation genuinely matters rather than in every session.

The honest limitation is speed under pressure. A tutor cannot feel a student's writing slow down in real time the way a teacher walking the room can. The substitute is measurement: timed pieces inside the examination word range, with the time taken recorded, so the trend in writing speed is visible even though the sensation of it is not. Most families find they trade an impression for a number, which in this subject is a good trade.

06

Home tutoring in Abu Dhabi, and what the online comparison really buys

In-home tutoring is a large and busy market in this emirate, and for Hindi it is unusually well supplied, because Abu Dhabi has a substantial Hindi-speaking population. A tutor arrives at a villa in Khalifa City or an apartment in Al Nahyan and teaches for an hour. Published market comparisons put in-home one-to-one at roughly AED 180 to AED 350 an hour, and online qualified subject tutors at roughly AED 150 to AED 300. Those are market figures from published rate tables rather than IB Gram prices.

IB Gram does not sell in-home visits anywhere in the UAE. We do not send a tutor to an Abu Dhabi address and we do not run home visits in Abu Dhabi; that is a service we offer only in India. Lessons here are one-to-one online, over live video, on Gulf Standard Time. Stating it directly is more useful than letting a family assume otherwise through a first phone call.

The distinction that matters for Hindi B is not availability of Hindi speakers, which is plentiful, but availability of people who have marked IB Hindi B against its criteria. Speaking Hindi fluently and knowing where a Paper 1 response loses a register mark are unrelated skills, and the second is rare in any single emirate. Online, the pool is everyone with that skill who is free at your hour.

The second thing it buys is the file. Marked images, recorded orals, logged raw scores, all in one folder that both sides can open two years later. An in-home arrangement leaves a notebook and goodwill. For a subject where the parent often cannot assess the work directly, documentation is not bureaucracy; it is the only way to know whether the money is doing anything.

07

Hindi, Arabic and the UAE's mandatory subjects in one school week

A Hindi B candidate in Abu Dhabi is rarely studying one additional language. Private schools in the UAE are not obliged to follow a specific curriculum beyond Arabic language, social studies and Islamic studies, and must adhere to the Ministry's general regulations, which means Arabic sits on the timetable alongside the licensed international curriculum. For most Hindi B students that is two non-Latin scripts and two sets of unfamiliar vocabulary in the same week.

ADEK, the Department of Education and Knowledge, supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in Abu Dhabi and is the authority whose published listings should be read on any school question. What ADEK does not do is relieve the timetable pressure, and the pressure is real: a student revising Arabic vocabulary and Hindi vocabulary in the same evening retains measurably less of both than one who separates them by a day.

The practical sequencing advice is dull and effective. Put the two languages on different days. Keep Hindi reading practice short and frequent rather than long and occasional, because decoding speed responds to frequency. Where Arabic assessments cluster, drop Hindi to maintenance for that fortnight rather than running both at full intensity and doing neither well.

One misconception worth closing: a Hindi B grade does not substitute for the Arabic requirement, and Arabic study does not help the Hindi grade. They are separate obligations with separate assessments. Families occasionally hope that a strong Hindi result will offset a weak Arabic report, and schools do not treat them that way, because they answer to different requirements.

08

What the numbers cannot show, and what we will not claim

  • Raw scores under fixed conditions are evidence; predicted grades are judgements
  • Mock results are only comparable when the paper source and conditions are held constant
  • No grade guarantee, no promised improvement, no claim about a May outcome
  • Marking, teaching and testing are offered; writing or translating submitted work is not
  • Three measurement points make a trend; one makes a sales argument

A page built on evidence should be honest about the limits of its own evidence. Raw scores on a cold paper are reliable; predicted grades are not, because they are produced by a teacher balancing a dozen considerations and they move for reasons that have nothing to do with a student's Hindi. A progress file tells you about skills. It does not forecast a May result, and nobody who claims otherwise is reading their own data.

Mock papers are also imperfect instruments. Different schools in this emirate use different past papers, mark them with different leniency, and sit them under different conditions. A mock score that rises after a school changes paper source has not necessarily measured anything. That is why the file uses the same paper format under the same conditions rather than whatever the school happened to set.

We make no claim about grade outcomes, no guarantee of improvement, and no promise about a specific score. What we will say is what the work consists of, what it is measured by, and what the measurements have done so far for the student in front of us. Any tutor offering a particular grade for a particular number of hours is selling something the IB does not sell.

The same honesty applies to assessed work. A tutor may teach register, model formal Hindi on a different topic, mark a student's own draft against criterion letters and test whether a correction held. A tutor may not write, rewrite or translate a piece that will be submitted. Under IB academic honesty rules the consequence of crossing that line falls on the candidate, which is exactly why the line is published here rather than left to be negotiated at a deadline.

Where we tutor

Where Hindi B students live in Abu Dhabi, and what that does to the week

The emirate's Indian-heritage families are spread across the island and the mainland communities, and the constraint on a Hindi plan is almost always the return commute rather than the subject. Each note is about what the available slot can usefully hold.

Al Nahyan and Al Mushrif

Established, central, and among the densest areas for after-school tutoring demand between 16:00 and 18:00. Booking just outside that window materially improves the chance of a specialist Hindi B match rather than a general Hindi speaker.

Khalifa City

Long return journeys from the island schools, so a 16:00 start rarely holds. Reading-paper technique and written accuracy survive a later slot well; oral rehearsal at 19:00 after a bus commute does not, and the recording will show it.

Al Reef

One of the longest school runs in the emirate. Families here gain the most from online delivery, because the hour that an in-home tutor would spend driving becomes a second short Hindi contact in the same week.

Mussafah and Mohammed Bin Zayed City

Mainland communities with a large Indian-curriculum school population nearby, so many students here arrive with CBSE Hindi behind them. That group needs assessment-structure work first and language work second.

Al Reem Island

Bridge congestion in the late afternoon makes anything before 17:00 unreliable. A single 60-minute session plus one marked written task returned midweek is the pattern that works best on this island.

Saadiyat Island

Short runs and early finishes, which makes this the easiest part of the emirate to hold a 16:30 slot twice a week. For Hindi that matters because Devanagari reading speed responds to frequency rather than to session length.

Al Raha Gardens and Al Raha Beach

Heavy after-school activity scheduling in the compounds here pushes Hindi sessions to 18:30, which suits listening practice and marked-script review better than live oral work.

Al Khalidiyah and the Corniche

Central and close to several Diploma schools, so early slots are achievable. Families in this area more often ask for weekend blocks to run full timed papers under exam conditions, which is the right use of a long slot.

Mainland and Mussafah schools

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Ask the school for the component breakdown

Before booking anything, request the four component scores from the most recent mock rather than the overall Hindi grade. That single document decides whether the work is reading, register, listening or interaction, and families who skip it usually buy a term of the wrong thing.

  2. 02

Free trial lesson that produces numbers

The trial runs a cold timed reading text and a short written piece rather than a conversation in Hindi, which a household speaker will always pass. It is free, needs no card, carries no obligation, and you keep the raw scores and the marked script either way.

  3. 03

A written plan with a measurement date in it

You receive the ranked leak, the recommended session pattern, and the date of the next measurement, in writing. If the honest answer is four reading sessions rather than two years of weekly hours, the plan says four reading sessions.

  4. 04

    Sessions that leave artefacts

Lessons run online, one-to-one, over live video on Gulf Standard Time. Written work is photographed, marked with criterion letters and stored dated in a shared folder; orals are recorded. Each session note records the cold-test result and the task set.

  5. 05

    Termly file, then a decision

At the end of each term the four measurements are retaken under the same conditions and compared with the baseline. Continuing, changing approach or stopping is decided from those numbers, and the file belongs to you whether or not the sessions continue.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Register taught as an addition, not a correction

Nobody is told their household Hindi is wrong. The student builds the formal written register alongside it and learns to switch deliberately, because switching is the assessed skill and purity is not the goal in any component.

Reading treated as the main event

For household speakers the reading paper is usually the lowest of the four scores and the cheapest to move. Timed authentic texts, an explicit procedure, and seconds-per-question logged, instead of general comprehension practice that never gets timed.

Devanagari marked, not waved at

Written work is handwritten under time, photographed and returned annotated with criterion letters and error classes. Where letter formation matters, a phone above the page gives a live view of the hand. The mechanics are described because they are the fair objection to online delivery.

A file you can audit without reading Hindi

Raw scores, timings, error counts per hundred words and dated recordings. Three measurement points across the Diploma produce a line rather than an impression, which is the only basis on which a second year of hours should be bought.

Online delivery, stated before booking

Every UAE lesson runs over live video on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send a tutor to an Abu Dhabi address and does not run home visits in this emirate; in-home tuition is an India-only service.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

My child speaks Hindi at home. Why is the Hindi B reading score the lowest of the four?+

Because speaking and reading Hindi are different skills, and the reading paper uses authentic texts written for Hindi readers: newspaper prose, notices, formal correspondence. A student who speaks daily and reads rarely decodes Devanagari slowly, starts at the first sentence, tries to understand everything and runs out of time. Ask the school for the raw reading score rather than the overall grade. The fix is procedural and takes about four sessions: questions first, scan for locating words, answer around unknown vocabulary, easiest questions first.

What is the difference between the Hindi we speak and the Hindi in the exam?+

Register. Formal written Hindi draws on Sanskrit-derived vocabulary and sentence structures that spoken Hindi rarely uses, while everyday Gulf Hindi mixes in English and Urdu-derived words naturally. Both are real Hindi; only the formal register is expected in the written paper. The work is additive rather than corrective: the student builds a formal word bank from authentic texts and learns to switch into it for writing and out of it for the oral, where a natural spoken register is entirely appropriate.

How can handwritten Devanagari be marked in an online lesson?+

The student writes on paper under timed conditions exactly as in the examination, photographs the page and uploads it to a shared folder. The tutor annotates the image with the criterion letter and the error class and returns it, and the marked page is on screen for both of them in the next session. Where letter formation or matra placement matters, a phone propped above the page gives a live view of the hand. The result is a dated, comparable artefact rather than a correction in a notebook.

Which component breakdown should I ask my child's school for?+

The four separate component results from the most recent mock: written response, listening, reading and individual oral, as raw scores rather than percentages. One overall Hindi grade hides the shape of the problem completely. A candidate scoring well in writing and poorly in reading needs a different term of work from one with the opposite profile, and the two profiles often sit in the same classroom. Most schools provide the breakdown when asked directly in writing after a parents' evening.

My son studied Hindi under CBSE until Class 10. Where does that leave him in Hindi B?+

Usually in a strong position with one specific gap. Indian-board Hindi gives real written foundations: Devanagari fluency, explicit grammar, exposure to formal registers. What it does not give is the IB's assessment logic — named text types, five prescribed themes, and an oral that rewards sustained discussion rather than prepared recitation. Those students often underperform in the first DP1 term for structural reasons and then move quickly. Bring a marked Indian-board script to the first session; it saves a diagnostic hour.

Is Higher Level Hindi B worth taking for a household speaker?+

Sometimes, and the decision should be made on a timed script rather than on spoken fluency. Higher Level adds two literary works, a longer written response, and an oral built on a literary extract instead of an image, which means reading demand rises sharply. A student whose reading score is the weakest of their four components will find HL expensive in hours. Take a cold reading paper and a timed written piece at the end of DP1, then decide with the DP coordinator on that evidence.

Does a Hindi B grade satisfy the Arabic requirement in a UAE school?+

No. They are separate obligations. Private schools in the UAE must teach Arabic language, social studies and Islamic studies alongside their licensed curriculum and must follow the Ministry's general regulations, and a Group 2 Diploma subject does not substitute for that. Schools do not trade one against the other because they answer to different requirements. The practical consequence is timetable load: two non-Latin scripts in one week, which is why we suggest separating Hindi and Arabic revision by a day rather than stacking them.

How quickly should we expect a Hindi B reading score to move?+

Decoding speed and raw score typically respond within four to six weeks of twice-weekly timed practice, provided the practice is timed and cold rather than comfortable. The honest way to know is to take a paper under fixed conditions, record the raw score and the seconds per question, install the procedure, and retake a comparable paper a month later. If the two numbers have not moved, the method changes rather than the hours increasing. Nobody should promise a particular grade from a particular number of sessions.

Can a Hindi B tutor help with an oral that is recorded at school?+

With preparation, yes; with the assessment itself, no. Sessions rehearse on unseen material — a visual stimulus at Standard Level, a literary extract at Higher Level — with the conversation half drilled before the presentation half, because that is the order in which marks are lost. Rehearsals are recorded so hesitation and accuracy drops can be counted rather than described. What a tutor cannot do is coach during the assessed oral or supply a script to be delivered, which would make the performance not the candidate's own.

What does Hindi tuition cost in the Abu Dhabi market?+

Published comparisons put qualified subject tutors working online at roughly AED 150 to AED 300 an hour in this market and in-home visits at around AED 180 to AED 350, with monthly online packages advertised from about AED 799 for eight sessions. Those are market figures from published rate tables, not IB Gram prices. Hindi speakers are plentiful here, so rates at the lower end are common; people who have marked IB Hindi B against its criteria are much rarer, and that is the skill worth paying for.

Does IB Gram send a Hindi tutor to our apartment in Abu Dhabi?+

No. IB Gram does not run home visits in Abu Dhabi or anywhere in the UAE, and no tutor is sent to an apartment, villa or compound here; in-home tutoring is offered only in India. Hindi B lessons for Abu Dhabi families are one-to-one online, over live video, on Gulf Standard Time. The practical gain is that written work is marked as a stored, dated artefact and orals are recorded, which an in-home lesson at the kitchen table does not produce.

We travel to India for six weeks each summer. Does that break the plan?+

Only if the sessions stop. Lessons run over live video, so the schedule is rebased to Indian Standard Time and continues, and a summer in a Hindi-reading environment is genuinely useful if it is used: newspapers, signage, public notices, with a timed text twice a week. What does damage is a six-week silence, which shows up immediately in the next reading timing. Tell us the dates a week ahead and the slot moves rather than pausing.

Will an outside Hindi tutor annoy my child's school?+

In our experience, rarely, provided the tutor stays in their lane. Teachers object to outside help that contradicts their teaching, supplies work, or arrives with claims about the school. They generally welcome a tutor who marks the student's own practice against criterion letters and sends nothing to the school at all. If you want to tell the teacher, the useful framing is the component you are working on and the measurement you are using, which is information rather than a complaint.

Can the tutor write the formal letter for Paper 1 practice if my daughter is stuck?+

No. A tutor may model a formal letter on a completely different topic, teach the conventions, mark your daughter's own attempt against criterion letters, explain why a phrase costs a register mark and test whether the correction held weeks later. Supplying the text, rewriting her paragraphs into better Hindi or translating from English is producing work that is not hers, and under IB academic honesty rules the consequence lands on the candidate. We decline those requests, including close to a deadline.

How many Hindi B sessions a week do Abu Dhabi families usually book?+

Two short contacts rather than one long session, for reading at least, because Devanagari decoding speed responds to frequency more than to duration. A common pattern is two 45-minute slots in DP1 — one reading sprint and one register and writing session — moving to a single 60-minute oral-focused session in DP2 once written accuracy is stable. Families in the mainland communities with long bus commutes often prefer one weekday contact plus a weekend block for full timed papers.

Get the component scores first, then decide what to buy

If you are looking at an IB DP Hindi B home tutor in Abu Dhabi, ask the school for the four component results from the last mock before you book anything. With those numbers in hand, the free trial lesson takes forty minutes, needs no card, carries no obligation, and produces the rest of the baseline: a cold reading score with timings, a marked written piece with criterion letters, and a recorded oral on unseen material. You keep the file either way. From there the work is narrow, measured and auditable, and lessons run online, one-to-one, on Gulf Standard Time.
