IB MYP Biology Tutor in Abu Dhabi

Hiring an IB MYP biology tutor in Abu Dhabi should leave a paper trail, not a feeling. This page sets out exactly what should exist after two weeks, four weeks and eight weeks: a baseline marked task, criterion levels recorded strand by strand, annotated drafts, and a short written note after every session. Lessons run one to one, live over video, on Gulf Standard Time, and everything the tutor marks stays with your child.

  • A baseline marked task before the first paid session, not after
  • Criterion levels recorded strand by strand so movement is visible
  • A written note after every session naming what was worked on
  • Drafts annotated with questions; the student writes every submitted word

How you will know whether biology tutoring is working

Most tutoring is bought on impression and abandoned on impression. A parent feels that sessions are going well because the student is calmer about biology, or feels that they are not because a grade has not moved, and in neither case is there anything on the table to look at. MYP biology is unusually well suited to a different approach, because the assessment model already produces the evidence. Four criteria, each marked out of eight, applied to tasks your child's school writes. That gives you four numbers to take a baseline from and four numbers to compare against later, strand by strand, instead of one blurred grade.

So the arrangement on this page starts with a baseline before any money changes hands. Send one marked biology task with the teacher's comments and the current report showing criterion levels. The tutor records where each criterion sits, which strand inside each criterion lost the level, and what the task was actually asking for. That record is written down and sent to you. It is the thing every later claim about progress gets measured against, and without it nobody can honestly say whether eight weeks of sessions achieved anything.

The second part is the fortnightly artefact. After two weeks there should be a piece of practice work marked against the rubric. After four weeks there should be an annotated draft of a biology write-up in the student's own words, with the tutor's marks visible as questions rather than corrections. After six weeks there should be a second marked task comparable to the baseline. If those three things do not exist, no amount of positive feeling is evidence, and you are entitled to say so.

The third part is the honest reading of what the evidence means. A criterion C level that moves from 3 to 5 across six weeks is a real result. A biology grade that moves from 4 to 5 in the same period may be a real result or may be a different unit with an easier task, and we will say which we think it is. Grades in the MYP are produced from tasks of varying difficulty set by the school, so a grade on its own is a weaker signal than a criterion level on a comparable task. Parents are rarely told this, and it changes how you should read a report.

All of it happens online. Lessons are one to one, live over video, in Gulf Standard Time, and IB Gram does not offer home visits in Abu Dhabi; visiting tutors are a service we run only in India. For an evidence-led arrangement the online format helps directly: every annotated draft, marked task and session note is a file that already exists in a shared place, rather than ink on a page in a school bag that nobody can find in six weeks' time.

At a glance

  • Baseline: one marked task plus the four criterion levels, recorded before the first paid session
  • Fortnightly: marked practice work, an annotated draft, then a comparable second task
  • A criterion level on a comparable task is stronger evidence than a change in the overall grade
  • Session notes are one short paragraph each, written for a parent rather than for a teacher
  • Delivery is live online, one to one, on Gulf Standard Time, with every artefact kept
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Biology shows up differently in each part of the IB continuum, and so does the evidence it produces. The record you can build in the MYP is better than most families realise and worse than the external record the Diploma generates, which is why what you do with it matters.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

Middle Years Programme

Biology is one strand of the Sciences subject group. MYP 1 to 3 is typically integrated, with cells, nutrition and ecology units alongside chemistry and physics. MYP 4 and 5 may split into discrete biology. All work is marked internally against criteria A to D, each out of eight, on tasks the school writes. That internal model is what makes a private baseline worth keeping.

In Abu Dhabi the schools licensed by ADEK report criterion levels directly, so the raw material for an evidence ledger is already in your household. ADEK also inspects these schools and publishes ratings, which gives a second reference point: a department rated well where your child is scoring poorly points towards a student-specific gap rather than a teaching one. That distinction decides whether tutoring is the right purchase at all.

DPAges 16-19 · DP 1-2

Diploma Programme

Biology becomes a named Standard or Higher Level course with external papers and an Internal Assessment. The evidence changes character completely: marks come from outside the school, past papers exist, and progress can be measured against published assessment criteria on work that an examiner will eventually see.

What an Abu Dhabi family keeps from the MYP is a record of which criteria were weak, and that predicts Diploma difficulty better than the MYP grade does. A student who left MYP 5 with a solid criterion A and a persistent criterion C problem will struggle with the Internal Assessment two years later, because the Internal Assessment is criterion C with the scaffolding removed. Families who kept the ledger know to spend DP 1 money on data handling rather than on content revision.

PYPAges 3-12 · Early years to Grade 5

Primary Years Programme

Inquiry-led science with no criterion grading. Children observe living things, record what they see and describe change. There is no biology mark, no rubric and therefore no evidence to baseline, which is the honest reason paid biology tutoring has nothing to work with at this stage.

In continuum schools in this emirate a child moves from PYP 5 straight into MYP 1 and meets criterion marking for the first time. The transferable habit is recording: a child who writes down what they observed, with a unit and a date, arrives in MYP 1 already doing the thing criterion C will reward. That costs nothing and we would rather recommend it than sell a biology course to a ten-year-old.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

A biology request usually arrives attached to something else, because the Sciences criteria are shared and the skills travel. These are the courses Abu Dhabi families most often combine with biology, and what evidence each one generates.

Sciences: the biology strand

MYP 1-5, integrated or discrete

Cells and microscopy, transport across membranes, nutrition and digestion, gas exchange, homeostasis, inheritance, evolution and ecology. The clearest evidence of progress here is a labelled diagram and an ecology sampling write-up, both of which show criterion C work plainly.

Sciences: the chemistry strand

MYP 1-5

Particles, bonding, reactions and quantitative work. Shares criteria C and D with biology, so a data-processing fix made in biology is visible in the next chemistry write-up without being taught twice.

Sciences: the physics strand

MYP 1-5

Forces, energy, waves and electricity. Its graph work is the most demanding of the three strands, which makes it a useful place to practise a criterion C skill that biology will then reuse on a growth curve or a transect.

Integrated Sciences

MYP 1-3

One grade covering all three strands, which averages away exactly the signal a parent needs. Ask for criterion levels per unit instead; a biology unit at 6, 3, 4, 5 next to a physics unit at 5, 5, 5, 5 tells you something the overall grade hides.

Mathematics (Standard)

MYP 1-5

Scale, ratio, percentages and simple statistics. Biology is quietly numerical: magnification calculations, rates of reaction in enzyme work, percentage change in growth data and means from sampling all sit inside criterion C levels.

Design

MYP 1-5

Inquiring and analysing, developing ideas, creating the solution, evaluating. Produces a process journal, which is the closest thing in the MYP to the fortnightly record this page argues for, and students who keep one well transfer the habit to Sciences.

Individuals and Societies

MYP 1-5

Investigation, source handling and critical thinking. Directly useful for criterion D in biology, where implications of applying science must be discussed with specific consequences rather than general concern about the environment.

Language and Literature

MYP 1-5

Analysis, organisation, text production and language use. Biology write-ups are extended prose, and a student who cannot structure a paragraph will lose Sciences levels for reasons a biology tutor alone cannot fix.

Arabic as a first or additional language

MYP 1-5

Required alongside the licensed curriculum in UAE private schools, with its own homework load. It is the main reason an Abu Dhabi biology plan has fewer workable evenings than a plan written for a student elsewhere.

Interdisciplinary units

MYP 1-5

Separately assessed units pairing Sciences with another subject group. Ecology and sustainability pairings are common in this emirate, and they carry their own criteria and their own grade, which parents often discover only when the report arrives.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three arrangements, each producing a different kind of record. All are one to one, live over video, on Gulf Standard Time, and all of them leave the marked artefacts with your child.

Baselined weekly term

The arrangement this page is built around. A recorded baseline, one session a week for a term, a marked practice task every fortnight and a six-week comparison against the baseline on the same criterion. It is the only arrangement in which a claim about progress can be checked rather than believed.

  • Baseline written and sent before the first paid session
  • One marked practice task per fortnight against the published rubric
  • A one-paragraph note after each session, written for a parent
  • Six-week review decides continue, change tutor, or stop

Draft review cycle

For students whose biology knowledge is sound and whose write-ups are not. The student submits a draft, the tutor annotates it with questions rather than corrections, the student rewrites it, and both versions are kept. The improvement is visible side by side, which makes this the most legible evidence available to a non-specialist parent.

  • Tutor marks in questions only; no sentence is supplied for a submission
  • Both drafts kept so the change is visible without interpretation
  • Criterion C and D strands named explicitly on each annotation
  • The final submitted text is written by the student alone

Diagnostic block

Three sessions for families who are not sure tutoring is the answer. The output is a written diagnosis rather than a term of lessons: which criterion is weak, whether the cause is biology, mathematics or writing, and whether a tutor is the right purchase at all. Sometimes the finding is that it is not.

  • Session one reads the marked work and tests the suspected gap cold
  • Session two tests the alternative explanation, usually mathematics or writing
  • Session three sets a target and a session count, or recommends no purchase
  • You keep the written diagnosis whether or not you continue

IB and IGCSE tutors available to students in Abu Dhabi

The tutors here teach the biology strand of MYP Sciences, integrated in MYP 1 to 3 and discrete where an Abu Dhabi school offers it in MYP 4 and 5. Each marks practice work against the published criterion rubric, writes the note that follows a session, and will show you a baseline before asking you to commit to a term.

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Abu Dhabi

01

The baseline: what gets written down before the first paid session

A baseline in MYP biology takes one marked task, the current criterion levels and about twenty minutes of a specialist's reading. What comes out of it is a short document naming four things: where each criterion currently sits, which strand inside the weakest criterion lost the level, what the task's command terms asked for, and which single criterion the term will target. That document is sent to you before anything is paid for, and every later claim about progress is measured against it.

Specificity is what makes it useful. 'Criterion C is weak' is not a baseline. 'Criterion C sits at 3; the data table had units in the cells rather than the headings, no mean was calculated from the three repeats, the graph used a line where the variable was categoric, and the evaluation named no limitation of the method' is a baseline, because each of those four statements can be checked against the same student's work six weeks later. It also tells you what the sessions are supposed to be doing, which means you can tell when they are not doing it.

Parents sometimes ask why a report card is not enough. Because a report gives you an average of tasks of different difficulty, written by different teachers, at different points in a unit. It tells you roughly where a student stands and almost nothing about why. A marked task tells you why, and the why is the only thing a tutor can act on. If the school has not sent marked work home this term, ask for it; schools in this emirate are generally willing, and the request itself tends to produce a useful conversation with the subject teacher.

02

Reading a marked biology task when you are not a biologist

A parent with no biology background can extract a surprising amount from a marked task in ten minutes, and the method does not require knowing the answers. Start with the command terms. Find each one in the question and read whether the answer did what it asked. If a question says 'explain' and the answer contains no 'because' and no mechanism, that is a lost mark you can see without understanding the biology at all.

Next, look at the diagrams. MYP biology rewards accurate labelled diagrams, and they fail in predictable ways: labels with lines that touch nothing in particular, structures drawn freehand where the shape carries meaning, no title, no magnification stated where a microscope was used. All of that is visible to anyone. A student who draws well and labels carelessly is losing criterion A marks for reasons that take one session to fix.

Then look at the data. In any biology write-up, check whether the table has units in the headings, whether repeats appear, whether a mean was calculated, and whether the graph type matches the kind of variable. A bar chart for a continuous variable or a line joining the dots instead of a line of best fit are the two errors that recur most, and both are mechanical. Finally, read the last paragraph. If it says 'there may have been human error' and stops, criterion C's evaluation strand has been left on the table, and that is worth one or two levels in itself.

What you cannot assess yourself is whether the biology content is right, and that is fine, because it is usually not the problem. Across requests from this emirate, content-only failures are the minority. The majority are command terms, diagram discipline, data presentation and evaluation, all of which a parent can audit directly. Doing that audit before buying tutoring often reveals that one focused term, not an open-ended arrangement, is what is actually needed.

03

What moves a biology criterion level, and how long each takes

Criterion levels do not move at the same speed, and knowing the rates stops families from abandoning an arrangement that is working or continuing one that is not. Criterion A, knowing and understanding, is the quickest: two to four sessions of focused work on explanation rather than description will usually move it a level, because the underlying knowledge is often already there and being presented wrongly.

Criterion B, inquiring and designing, is the slowest. A student has to produce a testable research question, identify and control variables, justify a method and plan something that would actually work. Four to eight sessions is a realistic expectation for one level, and the work is largely transferable: a student who can plan an osmosis investigation can plan an enzyme one. Criterion C, processing and evaluating, sits in similar territory, although the presentation half of it can move fast while the evaluation half takes longer.

Criterion D, reflecting on the impacts of science, is the one where a specific local context produces the fastest movement. Students write generically about environmental harm and score in the middle. Given a real habitat, a real trade-off and a citable source, the same student writes something specific and moves two levels. That is why the Abu Dhabi ecology context is treated as a tool on this page rather than as decoration. The table sets out each criterion with the strand that most often costs the level and a realistic number of sessions.

04

Diagrams, systems and the biology that produces checkable evidence

Biology content divides into parts that generate good evidence quickly and parts that do not. Cells and microscopy generate it immediately: a labelled diagram with a stated magnification is either accurate or it is not, and a student's second attempt sits next to their first. Transport across membranes is similarly legible, because osmosis and diffusion investigations produce numbers, and numbers produce the tables and graphs that criterion C is marked on.

Systems content, meaning digestion, circulation, gas exchange and homeostasis, generates evidence through explanation. These topics are where the gap between describing and explaining is widest: a student can list the parts of the digestive system and still be unable to explain why surface area matters to absorption. A tutor's intervention here is to keep asking why until structure and function are linked, and the evidence is a cold answer to a question the student has not seen, before and after.

Inheritance produces the cleanest evidence of all, because it is partly procedural. A student either sets out a genetic cross correctly, with parental genotypes, gametes, offspring genotypes and the phenotype ratio, or they do not. That is checkable by a parent in thirty seconds and improves in two or three sessions. Evolution and natural selection are the opposite: they reward precise reasoning about variation, selection and inheritance over generations, and loose phrasing about animals adapting because they needed to is penalised heavily. Ecology sits between the two, generating sampling data and the opportunity for a genuinely local criterion D discussion.

05

The Abu Dhabi habitat on your doorstep, used as criterion D evidence

Criterion D asks a student to apply science to address a problem and to discuss the implications of doing so. Most students answer it with generalities about pollution, and most scripts look identical as a result. Abu Dhabi students have access to specific local material that almost none of them use, and specificity is exactly what separates a middling level from a strong one.

The mangrove stands along the eastern edge of the island are a working example. They are a real habitat with a named dominant species, a measurable role in sediment stabilisation and carbon storage, a nursery function for fish, and a direct conflict with coastal development. A student can visit, photograph a transect, note the zonation from the water's edge inland, and write about a trade-off that exists rather than one imagined. The Environment Agency for the emirate publishes material on coastal and marine habitats that can be cited properly, which turns an assertion into a referenced claim.

Other contexts work the same way. Desert ecology supports a discussion of water conservation and grazing pressure. Species reintroduction programmes in this emirate raise questions about captive breeding, genetic diversity and the cost of conservation in money terms. Wetland reserves inland support a discussion of migratory birds and habitat protection against land use. Each of those has published local material behind it, which is the difference between a criterion D paragraph that could have been written anywhere and one that could only have been written here. The second scores better and takes no longer to write.

06

The academic-honesty line, and why the evidence depends on it

An evidence-led arrangement only works if the evidence is the student's. The IB's position is unambiguous: submitted work must be the student's own, and a tutor who supplies text has destroyed both the student's position and the only record worth keeping. A tutor may teach biology, question reasoning, mark practice work, name an unaddressed strand of the rubric and explain in general terms what a limitation or an implication is. A tutor may not provide sentences for a submission, correct a draft into a finished state, or supply answers to the task being assessed.

The question-led method is what makes this practical rather than merely principled. A tutor who annotates a draft with 'what was the smallest division on the instrument you used, and could you see the difference you are claiming?' has taught the evaluation strand without writing a word of it. The student answers in their own language, and the answer survives a teacher asking about it later. A tutor who writes 'the thermometer's precision limited the result' has handed over a sentence that the student cannot defend and that has taught nothing.

This matters commercially as well, because the same search results that brought you here contain providers selling completed assessed work. That is a malpractice trigger for the student, and the student bears the consequence. It is also why the annotated draft and its rewrite are both kept in this arrangement: two versions in the student's own voice, with the tutor's questions visible between them, are evidence of teaching. A single polished document with no history behind it is evidence of nothing, and in a dispute it is worse than nothing.

07

When the record says stop, and what to do about it

A six-week review has three honest outcomes, and two of them are not 'continue'. If the targeted criterion moved and the artefacts are in place, continuing is straightforward. If nothing moved, the question is why, and there are only a few real answers. The diagnosis may have been wrong, in which case the baseline gets rewritten and the target changes. The tutor may be the wrong match, in which case changing tutor rather than stopping is usually right. Or the obstacle may sit outside biology entirely.

That third case is more common than families expect. A student whose criterion C problem is really a mathematics problem will not improve with biology sessions, however good they are, because every data-processing task will keep failing at the same arithmetic step. A student whose write-ups fail on structure needs writing support, not biology support. A student whose sessions keep landing at half past seven after a long bus journey and two other homework subjects is not failing to learn; they are too tired to. The record usually shows which of these it is, because session notes that say 'ran out of time again' six weeks in a row are telling you something about the timetable rather than about the biology.

The fourth possibility is that tutoring is not needed. If the evidence shows a student at 6 or 7 across the criteria who is anxious rather than behind, more sessions will not help and may make it worse. We would rather say that at the six-week review and stop than keep selling hours into a problem that is not academic. Saying it is only possible because the baseline exists; without a record, every arrangement defaults to continuing indefinitely, which is precisely why so many of them do.

08

What the MYP biology record predicts about the Diploma

The most valuable thing a family takes out of MYP biology is not the grade. It is knowing which criteria were weak, because the Diploma reuses them with the scaffolding removed. The Internal Assessment in Diploma biology is essentially criteria B and C combined and extended: a student designs an investigation, collects and processes data, and evaluates the method, largely unaided. A student who left MYP 5 with a persistent criterion C weakness will meet that weakness again two years later with far higher stakes.

Criterion A translates less directly, because Diploma content is far broader and recall demands are higher. What does translate is the explanation habit. Students who learned in MYP 4 to answer 'explain' with a mechanism rather than a description arrive able to write Diploma answers that earn marks, and students who never learned it spend DP 1 being told the same thing their MYP teacher told them. Criterion D has the loosest mapping of the four, although the discipline of citing a source and naming a specific consequence is exactly what Diploma extended responses reward.

For an Abu Dhabi family choosing whether to spend in MYP 5, that is the practical frame. You are not buying a middle-years number that no university will ever see. You are buying the criterion B and C skills that the Internal Assessment will assume are already in place, at a market rate well below what Diploma support costs, in a year when the student has more time than they will have in DP 1. The record from MYP 5 then tells your DP 1 tutor exactly where to start, which is itself worth several sessions.

Where we tutor

Abu Dhabi communities and the biology records that come out of them

Delivery is online, so no tutor is driving anywhere. What varies between communities is the school day, the hour at which a student can still write carefully, and which biology artefacts families arrive holding when they first make contact.

Eastern Mangroves

The one community where criterion D and ecology fieldwork are on the doorstep. Students here can write a sampling investigation about a habitat they can walk to, which produces visibly stronger evidence than a generic food-web task.

Al Reem Island

Early returns from island school runs make four o'clock sessions workable, which matters for biology because annotating a draft takes patience. Al Reem families usually arrive with a marked task already in hand.

Khalifa City

Buses land later, so five and six o'clock slots dominate. Requests from this corridor are weighted towards practical write-ups and enzyme or osmosis investigations rather than content revision.

Al Raha Gardens

Villa community with sibling bookings common. Biology is often the second subject in a two-child arrangement, and the evidence ledger here has to be kept separately per child or it stops being useful.

Al Wahda and Al Nahyan

Central island communities with mixed school destinations. Families often arrive after a single disappointing report rather than a pattern, so the first task is establishing whether one task or one strand is the problem.

Yas Island

Newer cohorts and first-time MYP parents. The opening session is frequently spent reading criterion levels together, because a report of 6, 3, 4, 5 is unreadable until somebody explains which number is which.

Al Shamkha

Growing mainland community with long journeys home. Weekend mornings are the practical slot for a full investigation write-up, and the fortnightly artefact usually lands on a Saturday here rather than midweek.

Al Mushrif

Established villa community where biology enquiries skew to MYP 5 and the Diploma subject-choice question. The useful evidence here is criterion C, because that is what the Internal Assessment will demand in two years.

School ecosystem

Mainland communities

Larger year groups and more variation in how Sciences is timetabled, which makes a private record more valuable rather than less: when class sizes are large, the per-student feedback a parent sees is thinner and the baseline has to come from the marked work itself.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Send one marked biology task

With the teacher's comments on it, plus the current report showing criterion levels. These two documents support a real diagnosis; a phone conversation about how biology is going does not, because students and parents are usually wrong about which criterion is the problem.

  2. 02

    Receive the written baseline

Before any payment, you get a short document naming where each criterion sits, which strand lost the level, what the command terms asked, and the single criterion a term would target. It is written so that it can be proved wrong later, which is the point of it.

  3. 03

One session at no charge on the same work

A fifty-minute session with an MYP Sciences specialist at no charge, one per family, no card details taken. It tests the baseline's diagnosis against the student cold. Occasionally it disproves the diagnosis, which is more useful than confirming it.

  4. 04

Agree target, count and terms in writing

One criterion, a number of sessions, the rate in AED, whether preparation time is charged, and the reschedule window. Chasing all four criteria at once produces a busy term with nothing to show at the end of it.

  5. 05

Review at six weeks against the baseline

Second marked task next to the first, same criterion, read strand by strand. Continue, change tutor, change target, or stop. All four are real outcomes, and the review is where we say which one the evidence supports rather than which one sells more hours.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

A baseline you can hold us to

The target criterion and the failing strand are written down and sent to you before the first paid session. That document is specific enough to be proved wrong, which is the only kind of promise worth making about tutoring.

Artefacts, not impressions

A marked practice task every fortnight, an annotated draft with the student's rewrite beside it, and a comparable second task at six weeks. Each is a thing you can look at. None of them is a score we invented or a dashboard built to look like progress.

Honest reading of a grade

A grade that rises may reflect an easier task rather than a better student, and we will say so when that is the likelier explanation. A criterion level on comparable work is the stronger signal, and treating the two as equivalent is how families get told good news that is not true.

Questions instead of answers

Drafts are annotated with questions. The student answers them and rewrites in their own language, which is both the honest route and the one that produces defensible work. No sentence for a submission is ever supplied by a tutor here.

Local context used properly

Criterion D rewards specificity, and this emirate has mangrove stands, desert ecology, reintroduction programmes and wetland reserves with published material behind them. A referenced paragraph about a habitat your child can visit outscores a general one about the environment.

A review that can say stop

At six weeks the evidence decides, and sometimes it decides against continuing. If the obstacle is mathematics, writing or an exhausted eight o'clock session, we will say that rather than sell another term into a problem biology tutoring cannot reach.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

How do I tell whether my child's biology tutoring is actually working?+

By comparing a marked task from week one with a comparable one from week six, on the same criterion, strand by strand. That is the only comparison that means anything, because MYP tasks vary in difficulty and an overall grade averages them. Alongside it you should have a marked practice task every fortnight, an annotated draft with the student's rewrite beside it, and a short written note after each session. If those artefacts do not exist after six weeks, you have no evidence of progress regardless of how the sessions felt, and you are entitled to say so.

How can I check a marked biology task if I have no biology background?+

Four checks, none of which need subject knowledge. Find each command term and read whether the answer did what it asked, so an 'explain' question with no 'because' in the answer is a visible lost mark. Look at the diagrams for labels that point at nothing, missing titles and absent magnification. Check the data table for units in the headings, repeats and a mean. Read the final paragraph: if it says there may have been human error and stops, the evaluation strand has been left unwritten. Those four cover most lost marks in this emirate.

My daughter's biology criterion levels are 6, 3, 4, 5. What does that tell us?+

That the biology knowledge is in good shape and the investigation work is not. A 6 on criterion A means she can explain and apply content. A 3 on criterion B means inquiring and designing is the problem: the research question, the variables, the justification of the method. The 4 on criterion C says data processing and evaluation are mediocre, which usually travels with a weak B. A term aimed squarely at B, with C following, is the right purchase. A term of content revision would raise the 6 slightly and change nothing else.

How long does it take for a biology criterion level to move?+

It depends on which one. Criterion A usually moves in two to four focused sessions, because the knowledge is often present and being presented wrongly. Criterion B takes four to eight, as designing a controlled investigation is a composite skill that has to be built. Criterion C is similar, with presentation improving faster than evaluation. Criterion D can move in two to five sessions if the student is given a specific local context and a citable source instead of writing generally about the environment. Anyone promising a level in a fortnight is describing a sale.

Can we see evidence of the approach before committing to a term?+

Yes, and that is the sequence we prefer. Send one marked task and the current criterion levels, and you receive a written baseline naming where each criterion sits and which strand lost the level, before any payment. Then one fifty-minute session at no charge, one per family, with no card details taken, which tests that diagnosis against your child cold. You keep the baseline document either way. If the session disproves the diagnosis, that is a useful outcome rather than an embarrassing one, and it changes what gets bought.

What should exist after four weeks of biology sessions?+

Three things. A marked practice task from around week two, scored against the published criterion rubric rather than given a percentage. An annotated draft of a biology write-up, with the tutor's marks appearing as questions rather than as corrections, plus the student's own rewrite of it so the change is visible side by side. And four short session notes, one paragraph each, naming which criterion strand was worked on and what to practise. If any of those is missing at four weeks, ask why before week six.

Is a rising biology grade proof that the tutoring worked?+

Not on its own. MYP grades come from tasks of varying difficulty, written and marked by your child's own school, so a move from 4 to 5 could reflect a kinder task rather than a better student. The stronger signal is a criterion level on comparable work, which is why the baseline records the strand rather than the grade. We will tell you when we think a rise is task difficulty rather than progress. A provider that treats every improvement as proof of its own value is not measuring anything.

How do we evidence criterion B when the practical happens at school?+

By working on the plan rather than the apparatus. Criterion B is assessed on the research question, the variables identified and controlled, the justification of the method and the plan's workability, all of which are written documents. A tutor can set an investigation planning task on a biology topic the school is not currently assessing, mark it against the rubric, and repeat it a fortnight later on a different topic. Two plans, two marked levels, same criterion. That is clean evidence, and it does not touch the work being submitted at school.

What counts as strong evidence for criterion D in biology?+

A paragraph that names a specific application, a specific consequence and a source. Writing that pollution harms ecosystems earns a middling level because it is true of everywhere. Writing about the mangrove stands at the eastern edge of Abu Dhabi, their role in stabilising sediment and sheltering juvenile fish, and the direct conflict with coastal development, with an emirate environment-agency publication cited, earns considerably more. The evidence of progress here is simple: the earlier paragraph next to the later one, with the citation and the named trade-off present in the second.

Does my child have to do fieldwork for MYP biology?+

Not necessarily, as it depends entirely on what your school's units require, and the IB prescribes concepts and criteria for Sciences rather than a content list. Where ecology appears, fieldwork is common because sampling produces data a student can process. Even where the school does not run a trip, a student can practise the whole cycle informally: a transect along a public shoreline or a quadrat on a patch of ground generates real numbers to tabulate, mean and plot. The marks live in the processing and evaluation, not in the location.

Can we use the Abu Dhabi mangroves in a biology investigation write-up?+

Yes, and it is one of the better options available in this emirate. The stands along the eastern coast have a named dominant species, visible zonation from the water inland, and a documented role in sediment stabilisation and as a fish nursery. A student can photograph a transect, record zonation, and build a criterion D discussion about coastal development trade-offs with an emirate environment-agency publication as the source. Two cautions: check access rules for the specific site, and keep the write-up entirely in the student's own words.

What should we do if six weeks of sessions show no movement?+

Work through four explanations in order. The diagnosis may have been wrong, so rewrite the baseline and change the target. The tutor may be a poor match, in which case change tutor rather than stopping. The obstacle may sit outside biology: a criterion C problem that is really a ratio problem, or write-ups failing on paragraph structure. Or the schedule may be the issue, which session notes repeatedly mentioning lost time will reveal. If none of those applies and the student is already at 6 or 7, the honest answer may be that tutoring is not the right purchase.

Do labelled diagrams really earn marks in MYP biology?+

They do, and they are the most frequently wasted marks we see. Criterion A rewards accurate representation of biological knowledge, and diagrams fail predictably: label lines that end near a structure rather than on it, freehand shapes where proportion carries meaning, no title, and no magnification stated where a microscope was used. None of that is a biology failure, which is why it is fixable in one or two sessions. It is also the easiest thing for a parent to audit in a marked task without knowing any biology at all.

How well does an MYP biology record predict Diploma biology?+

Better than the grade does. The Diploma Internal Assessment is largely criteria B and C extended with the scaffolding removed: the student designs an investigation, processes the data and evaluates the method with far less support. A persistent criterion C weakness in MYP 5 reappears there with much higher stakes. Criterion A translates as the habit of explaining rather than describing, which earns Diploma marks immediately. Keeping the MYP record means a DP 1 tutor can start where the gap actually is instead of spending three sessions finding it.

Will a biology tutor come to our address in Abu Dhabi?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Abu Dhabi, and visiting tutors are a service we provide only in India. UAE lessons are one to one, live over video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time. For an evidence-led arrangement that is an advantage: annotated drafts, marked practice tasks and session notes are files in a shared place rather than paper in a school bag, so a six-week comparison is actually possible. The tutor is also chosen for how well they mark MYP Sciences criteria rather than for where they live.

Should we record the biology sessions to keep our own record?+

The session notes and marked artefacts are the record that matters, and they are easier to use than video. A one-paragraph note naming the criterion strand worked on, plus a marked task every fortnight, can be read in two minutes at the six-week review. An hour of video cannot. If you do want recordings, agree it in writing with the tutor in advance, keep them private to the household, and remember that recordings of a minor are personal data under the UAE's data-protection law and should be stored and deleted accordingly.

Start with a baseline, not with a booking

The useful first step costs nothing and takes a day. Send one marked biology task with the teacher's comments and the report showing criterion levels. You will get back a written baseline naming where each criterion sits, which strand is costing the level and what a term would target, followed by one fifty-minute session at no charge that tests that reading against your child cold. From there you can decide with a document in front of you rather than a feeling, and six weeks later you can check whether the document turned out to be true.
