IB & IGCSE in Abu Dhabi

What should be in your hands after six weeks of Chemistry Higher Level sessions

Most Abu Dhabi families start paying for Chemistry Higher Level support in the term after a disappointing mock. Six weeks later the honest question is not whether the tutor is pleasant or punctual. It is whether anything measurable has changed. A Chemistry Higher Level tutor in Abu Dhabi who cannot put a marked script, a dated draft and a short written record on the table is asking you to judge the work on impressions, and impressions are exactly what the mock already contradicted.

So this page is built around evidence rather than promises. It sets out what a session produces, what arrives in your inbox afterwards, how a marked Paper 2 is read, how the scientific investigation draft trail is kept, and what the record looks like in month two when the grade has not yet moved. It also sets out what the record cannot tell you, because a tutor who claims the paperwork proves more than it does is doing the same thing as one who keeps no paperwork at all.

Chemistry Higher Level is a 240-hour course assessed through two written papers and one internal investigation. Paper 1 carries 36 per cent and splits into multiple-choice items and a data-based section. Paper 2 carries 44 per cent and is where extended reasoning, mechanisms and multi-step calculations are tested. The investigation carries the remaining 20 per cent and is marked by the school against published criteria before external moderation. Those three numbers decide where paid hours are worth spending, and a record that does not reference them is not a record of anything.

The delivery model matters to the evidence. Because lessons run over live video with a shared whiteboard, the written work a student produces in the session is already a file: the annotated question, the corrected mechanism, the recalculated energetics problem. An in-home tutor in the Abu Dhabi market may do identical teaching, but the artefacts usually leave with the tutor or stay in the student's notebook, and the parent sees a verbal summary at the door. The format is not better because it is online. It is easier to audit.

Read the sections below in order if your child is in DP1 and you are deciding whether to start. Skip to the twelve-week log and the stalled-grade section if you are already paying someone and want to work out whether to continue. Every AED figure on this page is a market band taken from published rate cards and rate surveys, attributed where it appears, and is not a price list for this service. If your child is in DP2 with a mock already behind them, the pre-session intensive format described further down is usually the right starting point rather than a standard weekly slot, because the remaining weeks are finite and the diagnosis has to come quickly.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Chemistry Higher Level is the end of a long runway. Most Abu Dhabi students arrive at it from MYP sciences or from an IGCSE double or triple award, and the gap between those starting points and DP1 chemistry explains a large share of the marks lost in the first year.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

The two-year Diploma, in which Chemistry Higher Level is one of three subjects taken at the deeper level. The course is organised around structure and reactivity, with Higher Level extensions layered onto the same themes rather than taught as separate units. Assessment is two written papers plus one scientific investigation, and the investigation is marked internally against published criteria before the IB moderates a sample. Students also carry the core: Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service.

Abu Dhabi Diploma cohorts are small, so a chemistry class of twelve is common and a class of six is not unusual. That has two consequences for paid support. A student who falls behind is visible quickly, which is useful. A student whose difficulty is unusual within a small class may wait a long time for teaching that addresses it, which is where one-to-one hours earn their place.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

Middle Years Programme

The five-year programme that feeds most IB continuum schools in the emirate. MYP sciences are assessed against four criteria: knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. The criteria reward investigation design and evaluation heavily, which prepares a student well for the Diploma investigation and less well for the recall density and calculation speed that Chemistry Higher Level papers demand.

The MYP-to-Diploma step is the single most common reason an Abu Dhabi family first contacts a chemistry tutor. A student who scored 7s against MYP criteria can still open DP1 with no fluency in moles, limiting reagents or significant figures, because those were never the thing being marked. Six to eight focused hours in the first term usually closes that gap before it becomes a grade.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge and Edexcel upper secondary

Many Abu Dhabi students take Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry 0620 or Edexcel 4CH1 before moving into the Diploma, sometimes at a different school. Both cover bonding, stoichiometry, rates, equilibrium and organic families, but at a depth that stops well short of Higher Level. Entropy, Gibbs energy, electrode potentials and mechanism curly-arrow notation are Diploma material, and the transition year is when a student discovers that memorising reactions no longer suffices.

Abu Dhabi has a large British-curriculum sector feeding IB Diploma cohorts, so chemistry classes in DP1 often mix students from 0620, 4CH1 and MYP backgrounds. Tutors working with these students spend the first sessions establishing which of the three a student came from, because the missing foundations are different in each case and guessing wastes paid hours.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Chemistry Higher Level rarely arrives alone. The subjects below are the ones Abu Dhabi families most often pair with it, and the notes say what each one assesses rather than how enjoyable it is.

Chemistry

Higher Level

Two written papers plus the scientific investigation. Paper 1 mixes multiple-choice with a data-based section; Paper 2 carries the extended reasoning. Higher Level adds entropy and Gibbs energy, electrode potentials, pH curves and buffer calculations, and a substantially longer organic mechanism list. Mark loss concentrates in mechanism notation and multi-step quantitative work.

Chemistry

Standard Level

The same themes to a shallower depth, with the same 20 per cent investigation weighting and shorter papers. Students who move down from Higher Level mid-course often carry notation habits that cost them nothing at Standard Level, so the tutoring focus shifts to coverage and calculation accuracy rather than reasoning depth.

Biology

Higher Level and Standard Level

Four themes and a heavier recall load than chemistry, assessed through the same paper architecture and the same 20 per cent investigation. Students taking both sciences at Higher Level usually need their revision sequenced rather than doubled, because the two investigations tend to fall in the same weeks.

Physics

Higher Level and Standard Level

Shares the chemistry paper structure but tests mathematical modelling far harder. Abu Dhabi students pairing Chemistry and Physics at Higher Level for engineering applications frequently need the same algebra taught twice, in two notations, which is a reason to use one tutor across both where possible.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

Higher Level and Standard Level

The route most UAE and overseas engineering and medicine applicants are advised towards. Logarithms, exponentials and rates of change surface directly in chemistry kinetics and pH work, so weakness here shows up as a chemistry problem long before it shows up as a mathematics one.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

Higher Level and Standard Level

Statistics-heavy and, at Standard Level, a common pairing with Chemistry Higher Level for students heading to business or health-science routes. Its statistical content is directly useful for processing investigation data, which the chemistry course assumes but does not teach.

Environmental Systems and Societies

Higher Level and Standard Level

A transdisciplinary subject that can satisfy both the sciences and the individuals-and-societies requirement. Students who drop Chemistry Higher Level mid-DP1 sometimes land here, and the transfer requires catching up on systems thinking rather than more chemistry.

Sports, Exercise and Health Science

Higher Level and Standard Level

Draws on the same biochemistry and energetics that Chemistry Higher Level treats formally. Abu Dhabi schools with strong sports programmes offer it widely, and students taking it alongside chemistry can reuse the energetics work across both syllabuses.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

The core course whose exhibition and essay sit in the same DP1 and DP2 weeks as the chemistry investigation. Families who plan paid hours around the chemistry calendar alone are often surprised by how much of a student's writing capacity Theory of Knowledge absorbs in those weeks.

Extended Essay

Core

A 4,000-word independent piece that a Chemistry Higher Level student may choose to write in chemistry. Supervision belongs to the school; a tutor's role is teaching the research skills and giving feedback on the student's own drafts, never supplying content for the submission.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats cover almost every Chemistry Higher Level request in Abu Dhabi. All three run online, one-to-one, and all three produce the same written record.

Weekly one-to-one with a marked question each time

The default for a DP1 or DP2 student whose grade needs to move rather than hold. One 60 or 90-minute session a week, built on a question the student attempts first and the tutor marks live, with the annotated script and a correction note sent afterwards. The weekly rhythm matters more than the length: a student who writes chemistry once a week under correction improves faster than one who is explained to for three hours a month.

  • Student attempts the question cold before the session starts
  • Marking happens on screen, with the markscheme wording read aloud
  • Annotated script and a one-line action sent the same evening
  • The action is checked at the start of the following session

Scientific investigation draft clinic

A short block of sessions around the investigation, timed to the school's internal deadlines rather than the exam session. The tutor teaches the methodology, the uncertainty treatment and the evaluation structure, then gives feedback on each dated draft the student produces. The drafts stay the student's work from first version to last, and the trail of versions is what a parent can inspect.

  • Methodology and uncertainty taught before any writing begins
  • Each draft kept dated so changes between versions are visible
  • Feedback is written as questions, not as replacement text
  • The school supervisor stays the authority on scope and approval

Pre-mock and pre-session intensive

A concentrated block in the four to six weeks before mocks or the May session, usually two sessions a week plus timed papers between them. Each paper comes back marked by category rather than by score, so the student can see whether the problem is recall, command terms, notation or arithmetic. This format suits a student whose content coverage is adequate and whose marks are not.

  • Two sessions a week plus one timed paper between them
  • Papers returned marked by error category, not just totalled
  • Data-booklet navigation drilled against the clock
  • A one-page summary of categories still open going into the exam

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Abu Dhabi

01

The first session produces a diagnosis, not a lesson plan

A first Chemistry Higher Level session that opens with teaching has skipped the only step that saves money. Before anything is explained, the student attempts a short set of past-paper items under time, and the tutor marks them in front of them. What comes out of that is not a score. It is a split of the marks lost into categories, because the fix for each category is different and the hours needed for each are different.

The categories recur with enough consistency across Abu Dhabi Diploma students to be worth naming. A recall gap is cheap to close and shows improvement within a fortnight. A command-term mismatch, where a student explains what the question asked them to deduce, takes longer because it requires rewriting their own answers against markscheme wording until the habit changes. Mechanism notation errors look severe and are among the fastest to fix. Quantitative slips, by contrast, often turn out to be a mathematics problem wearing a chemistry costume.

This matters for the evidence trail because a diagnosis is a prediction, and a prediction can be checked. If the first session says the dominant loss is command-term mismatch and estimates three to four weeks, then four weeks later you have something specific to test: do the same question types now score, and does the marked script show the correct verb being answered? A tutor who never commits to a diagnosis can never be shown to have been wrong, which is comfortable for the tutor and useless for you.

Reading a marked Chemistry Higher Level script the way a moderator reads it

A school report says a grade. A marked script says why. The difference matters because Chemistry Higher Level marks are awarded against specific wording, and a student can produce chemically correct work that earns nothing because it answered a different command term. When a tutor marks a Paper 2 question on screen, the useful part is not the tick or the cross. It is reading the markscheme line that was available and asking the student to say, in their own words, what they would have had to write to claim it.

Three habits show up repeatedly in Abu Dhabi scripts. The first is answering the chemistry rather than the question: a correct explanation of why a reaction is exothermic, where the question asked the student to deduce a sign from given data. The second is stopping one step short on multi-stage calculations, usually because the final conversion was assumed to be obvious. The third is writing a mechanism that works chemically but notates badly, with arrows starting from an atom rather than a bond or a lone pair.

None of these is a knowledge problem, and that is why the fix is rapid once the student can see it. What makes it visible is the annotated script, kept and compared. A parent who has three marked Paper 2 questions from three consecutive weeks can see for themselves whether the same annotation keeps reappearing. That is a far more reliable signal than a tutor's verbal report, and it is the single artefact worth insisting on from anyone you pay.

03

Twelve weeks of Chemistry Higher Level, logged

A term of weekly sessions produces twelve records if someone is keeping them. The table below is the shape of that log for a DP2 student who started in the term after a mock, which is the most common entry point for Abu Dhabi families. It is not a syllabus plan. It is a record of what was taught, what the parent received and how the claim was checked, which are three different things that often get collapsed into one cheerful message.

The order is driven by the diagnosis, not by the syllabus sequence. A student whose dominant loss is quantitative starts with energetics and equilibrium calculations even if the class is on organic chemistry, because the point of paid hours is to work on what is costing marks. Content coverage gaps are addressed where they appear, in the weeks where the school has moved on and the student has not.

Two features of the log are deliberate. First, every week names a check, so the following session opens by testing the previous one rather than by asking how things have been going. Second, the log records what was not covered as well as what was, which is how a family avoids paying twice for the same topic when they change tutors or add a second subject later in the year. Twelve weeks is also roughly the length of one Abu Dhabi school term, so the review at the end of the log lands at a point where the school has its own assessment data to compare against, and the two records can be read side by side.

04

The Higher Level extensions, and which of them do the most damage to a script

Higher Level chemistry is not a separate course from Standard Level. It is the same themes with additional depth folded in, which is why a student who moved up or down a level mid-course can be hard to diagnose. The extensions that generate the most marked-script damage in Abu Dhabi cohorts are consistent enough to plan around: entropy and Gibbs energy, electrode potentials and electrochemical cells, pH curves and buffer calculations, and the extended organic mechanism list with its stereochemistry.

Entropy and Gibbs energy cause trouble because they are the first point in the course where a student must hold a sign convention, a unit conversion and a conceptual argument at once. Marks are lost to arithmetic rather than to chemistry: kilojoules against joules, a temperature left in Celsius, a spontaneity conclusion stated without reference to the calculated value. Electrode potentials fail differently, usually through the direction of the reaction being read backwards from the table.

Buffers and pH curves are where a weak mathematical foundation becomes unavoidable, because logarithms arrive with no warning and the student who has been coping without them stops coping. The organic extension is the opposite case: the content is learnable and the notation is where the marks go, which is why mechanism drills by hand, corrected one arrow at a time, produce visible movement in a fortnight. A tutor who knows which of these four is dominant for your child is worth more than one who covers all four evenly.

05

The scientific investigation: dated drafts and the line that does not move

The investigation is 20 per cent of the Chemistry Higher Level grade, marked by the school against published criteria and moderated externally on a sample. It is also the part of the course where a paid tutor can most easily cross a line that gets a student into serious difficulty. The safe position is simple and worth stating plainly: a tutor teaches methodology, uncertainty treatment and evaluation structure, reads what the student has written, and responds with questions. The words in the report stay the student's own from the first version to the submitted one.

In practice that means feedback phrased as a question rather than a replacement sentence. Not a rewritten paragraph, but: what does this graph show that your conclusion does not mention? Where did that uncertainty figure come from? If a reader repeated this method from your description alone, what would they get wrong? Each question sends the student back to their own draft, and each returned draft is dated, so the trail of versions shows whose thinking moved.

That trail is also the parent's protection. Finished investigations are sold in this market, and some families are approached with them. The risk is not theoretical: submitting work that is not the student's own is a malpractice matter handled by the IB, and the consequences fall on the candidate rather than on the person who sold it. A dated draft history, visibly getting better in the student's own voice, is the record that makes the question moot. Your school's supervisor remains the authority on scope, approval and submission.

06

Month two, when the grade stops moving

Grades do not improve in a straight line, and the second month is where most families lose confidence. The pattern is recognisable. Weeks one to four produce visible gains, because the cheapest errors go first: notation tidied, a recall gap closed, arithmetic habits corrected. Weeks five to eight often look flat, because what remains is reasoning depth, and reasoning depth changes slowly and then all at once when a student stops translating questions and starts reading them.

A log makes that period survivable, because it distinguishes a plateau from a failure. In a genuine plateau the category split is still changing even while the total holds: fewer notation marks lost, more marks lost on the long extended-response items that were previously left blank. That is progress inside a static score, and it is visible only if someone recorded the categories in week one. Without the record there is nothing to compare, and the conversation becomes a matter of faith.

A failure looks different. The same annotation keeps appearing on the same question type, the named action from the previous session was not attempted, or the student cannot say what last week's session was about. Those are the signals worth acting on, and acting usually means changing the approach rather than adding hours. More sessions on top of an approach that is not landing is the most common way an Abu Dhabi family spends four thousand dirhams and ends the term where it started.

07

An in-home Chemistry tutor in Abu Dhabi against online, judged on what each produces

Families searching for a home tutor are asking a reasonable question, and it deserves a straight answer rather than a sales pitch. In-home chemistry tuition in Abu Dhabi is a real market, charging roughly AED 180-350 an hour according to the Bestimate 2026 Dubai and UAE rate survey, with specialist in-home rates reported up to AED 500 where travel is long or the subject is scarce. Part of that price is the travel, and the travel is also what limits who you can hire: your pool is whoever will cross the emirate to reach you at 17:30.

IB Gram does not offer home visits in Abu Dhabi, or anywhere else in the UAE; in-home visits are a service run only in India. Tuition for Abu Dhabi families is delivered one-to-one over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time. That is a genuine trade: you give up a person in the room, and you get a Chemistry Higher Level specialist chosen for the papers your child is losing marks on rather than for their postcode, at a rate that carries no travel.

For this subject the trade tilts further than it would for most, because chemistry at Higher Level is written work. Mechanisms, calculations and extended responses are produced on a shared screen, annotated as they are written, and saved. The evidence trail that this whole page is built on is a by-product of the format. The table below sets out the comparison on the things that actually differ, rather than on atmosphere.

08

ADEK, your school's reporting cycle, and the meeting to ask for

Private schools in Abu Dhabi are overseen by the Department of Education and Knowledge, which supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate and publishes inspection outcomes on its own site. For a parent weighing chemistry support, the inspection report is useful background and a poor diagnostic: it describes a school, not your child's Paper 2. The more useful documents are the ones your school already produces and rarely explains.

Ask the chemistry teacher three questions at the next meeting. Which assessment objectives is my child losing marks against, rather than which grade did they get? Where is the class against the scheme of work, and which topics will be taught after the next mock? And when are the internal investigation deadlines, as opposed to the IB submission date? The answers let a tutor plan around the school rather than across it, which is the difference between support and duplication.

Abu Dhabi has one further rule worth knowing. ADEK's professional-ethics expectations for private and charter school staff have been reported as prohibiting teachers from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, and a teacher tutoring outside school hours is required to hold the MoHRE private tuition work permit, whose code of conduct points the same way. Verify the current wording with the school or on ADEK's own policy pages before acting on it, but the practical implication is clear: paying your child's own chemistry teacher for private sessions is not the shortcut it appears to be.

09

What we will not claim, and what to ask for instead

This page publishes no success rate, no average grade movement and no satisfaction score. That is deliberate. A figure of that kind is meaningful only with the number of students behind it, the dates it covers and the method used to collect it, and a provider that quotes one without those three things is quoting a marketing number. Several providers in this market publish ratings and improvement percentages that contradict other figures on their own pages, which is worth checking before you treat any of them as evidence.

What can honestly be offered instead is a specific, checkable thing: a diagnosis after the first session, a written record after every session, dated drafts for the investigation, and a comparison of the week-one category split with the week-twelve one. None of that predicts a grade. All of it can be audited by you, which is more than a percentage can.

The same caution applies to credentials. A tutor described as an examiner should be able to evidence current status, and examiner status gives no access to unreleased papers, boundaries or marking decisions. Nobody can promise a 7, and nobody honest will. What a good Chemistry Higher Level tutor can promise is that your child will write chemistry every week under correction, and that you will be able to see what changed. Ask one more question before you pay anyone in this market: what will I receive after each session, and in what form? A provider who cannot answer that in a sentence is unlikely to produce a record worth auditing at week twelve.

Where we tutor

Where in Abu Dhabi our Chemistry Higher Level students live

Delivery is online, so none of these areas is easier or harder to serve than another. What differs is the school-run timetable, which decides when a Chemistry Higher Level session can realistically start on a weekday.

Saadiyat Island

Home to several of the emirate's IB and British Diploma cohorts. School days end late and the bridge back to the island absorbs the rest of the afternoon, so Saadiyat Island chemistry sessions usually sit at 18:00 or later.

Al Reem Island

Dense apartment living with families spread across several Diploma schools on the mainland. Commutes are short but staggered, so siblings in the same household often need separate slots rather than one shared evening.

Khalifa City

A villa community feeding a cluster of Diploma and British schools nearby. Khalifa City Chemistry Higher Level tuition is most often booked at 17:00, which is early enough to finish before late study and prep.

Al Raha Beach and Al Raha Gardens

Mixed apartment and villa communities on the airport corridor. Families here are used to long school-bus runs, and a 90-minute online block on a Saturday morning frequently works better than two weekday evenings.

Yas Island

A newer residential base with growing Diploma numbers. Weekday traffic off the island at pick-up time is the practical constraint, which is why an online slot at 17:30 is easier to hold than any arrangement requiring travel.

Al Bateen

An established area close to the city-centre schools, including an Aldar Diploma cohort. Short journeys mean earlier sessions are feasible, and 16:30 chemistry slots are more commonly taken here than elsewhere.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City

A large mainland community with students travelling to schools across the emirate. Journey times vary widely within the same street, so a fixed online slot removes the main source of cancelled lessons.

Al Reef

A commuter community near the airport with families split between Khalifa City and island schools. Evening slots after 18:30 are the norm, and weekend blocks are popular in the weeks before mocks.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Abu Dhabi

Saadiyat Island, the Corniche and Al Bateen

The island and city-centre cluster holds a large share of Abu Dhabi's Diploma chemistry entries. Students we support here most often ask for Paper 2 marking and mechanism work. Programme offerings and current inspection ratings should be checked on ADEK's own school listing, which publishes both.

  • International Community School Abu Dhabi
  • Brighton College Abu Dhabi

Khalifa City, Al Raha and the mainland corridor

The mainland corridor combines IB continuum schools with large British-curriculum schools whose students join the Diploma in Year 12. Chemistry requests from this cluster lean towards stoichiometry and energetics catch-up in the first DP1 term rather than exam technique.

  • Al Yasmina Academy
  • The British International School Abu Dhabi

Al Reem Island and Yas Island

Schools are named as context for the Abu Dhabi Diploma landscape and because students we support attend them. No affiliation, endorsement or partnership with any named school is implied, and programme offerings and inspection ratings should be verified on ADEK's own listings.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the script, not the story

The useful opening message is not that chemistry is going badly. It is the grade on the last mock, the paper it came from and what the teacher said was weak. If you have a marked script, send a photograph of one question. Matching improves sharply when the first conversation starts from evidence rather than from a general worry.

  2. 02

    A free 45-minute diagnostic trial

The trial is a working session, not a sales call, and no card details are required to book it. The student attempts timed items, the tutor marks them live, and you receive the category split with an estimate in weeks for each category. If the diagnosis does not match what you are seeing at home, say so before any block is booked.

  3. 03

Fix the slot in Gulf Standard Time

Sessions are booked at a fixed weekly time in Gulf Standard Time, chosen around the school run rather than around the tutor. Saadiyat and Al Reef families usually land after 18:00; Al Bateen and Khalifa City families often take 16:30 or 17:00. The slot holds through the term so the weekly rhythm is not renegotiated every Sunday.

  4. 04

    Work, marked and recorded

Each session ends with an annotated script, a short correction note and one named action, sent the same evening. The next session opens by checking that action. Investigation drafts are kept dated. Nothing in the record is a score on its own; the point is that it can be compared with last week and with week one.

  5. 05

Review at week six and week twelve

At six weeks the question is whether the dominant error category has shifted, not whether the grade has. At twelve weeks the week-one split is compared with the current one and the plan is either continued, changed or stopped. Stopping is a legitimate outcome, and a tutor who never raises it is not reading the record.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

A diagnosis you can test

The first session commits to a ranked split of where marks are being lost and an estimate in weeks for each category. That is a prediction, which means it can be checked at week six and found wrong. A tutor who avoids committing to one cannot be held to anything.

Written work every week, marked live

Chemistry Higher Level is assessed on what a student writes under time, so sessions are built around the student writing under correction rather than listening. Explanation is cheap and plentiful; marked practice with the markscheme wording read aloud is the part that moves a Paper 2 score.

Specialists chosen by paper, not by postcode

Because delivery is online, the pool is Chemistry Higher Level specialists rather than whoever will drive to your area at 17:30. A student losing marks on mechanisms and a student losing them on energetics are matched to different tutors, which is not possible when geography sets the shortlist.

An honesty line stated in advance

On the investigation and the Extended Essay, feedback arrives as questions about the student's own draft. Dated versions are kept so the progression is visible. This is a real difference in a market where finished coursework is openly sold, and the risk of that falls on the candidate.

No invented numbers

No success rate, no average improvement, no star rating. AED figures on this page are market bands with their source named, not a fee list. What is offered instead is an auditable record, which is a smaller claim and a checkable one.

Continuity that survives a change of tutor

The log travels with the student. If a tutor moves on or the subject mix changes, the next person starts from the category split and the coverage record rather than re-diagnosing from scratch, which is where families most often pay twice for the same topic.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

What should we have received after a month of Chemistry Higher Level sessions in Abu Dhabi?+

Four annotated scripts, four short correction notes naming one action each, and the category split from the first session to compare against. If an investigation is running, you should also have the dated drafts. What you should not have is only a verbal account of how things are going. The point of the paperwork is that it lets you check a claim rather than trust one: if the first session said command terms were the dominant loss and estimated three to four weeks, the fourth script should show the correct command term being answered.

How does a tutor mark a Chemistry Higher Level Paper 2 differently from our school?+

A school marks to produce a grade for a report. A tutor marks to produce a diagnosis, so the output is different. The useful part is not the score but the annotation: which markscheme line was available, what wording would have claimed it, and which of the five error categories this loss belongs to. Marking also happens with the student present and reading the markscheme aloud, which is where the habit changes. Schools have thirty scripts and a deadline; one-to-one marking can afford to spend fifteen minutes on a four-mark question.

Which Chemistry Higher Level topics show up first in a marked script as a problem?+

Energetics and entropy usually surface earliest, because they are the first place a student must manage a sign convention, a unit conversion and a written argument at the same time. Mark loss there is typically arithmetic rather than chemical: kilojoules against joules, a temperature left in Celsius, a spontaneity conclusion stated without reference to the calculated value. Organic mechanism notation appears next, and buffers and pH curves tend to arrive later because they expose a weak logarithm foundation that the student had been managing without.

Our daughter's mechanism answers lose marks even when the product is right. Why?+

Because mechanism marks are awarded for notation, not for the outcome. The common losses are arrows starting from an atom rather than from a bond or a lone pair, missing lone pairs on a nucleophile, absent formal charges on an intermediate, and partial charges omitted where the question asked for them. None of this is a knowledge gap, which is why it is among the fastest categories to fix. Hand-drawn mechanism sets with the arrow origin corrected every time usually produce visible movement inside a fortnight.

How many past papers should a DP2 Chemistry Higher Level student have marked before mocks?+

Fewer than most families imagine, properly marked, beats a stack done unmarked. A reasonable pattern through a term is one timed part-paper a fortnight with full annotation, rising to one full paper a week in the final six weeks. The variable that matters is whether each paper was marked by error category and whether the categories are shrinking. Twenty unmarked papers teach a student their own mistakes more thoroughly; six marked ones with the markscheme wording read aloud change what they write.

Can you show us what changed between two drafts of the chemistry investigation?+

Yes, and that is the reason the drafts are kept dated. Each version sits alongside the feedback that prompted it, and the feedback is written as questions rather than as replacement text: what does this graph show that your conclusion does not mention, where did that uncertainty figure come from, what would a reader get wrong if they repeated this method from your description. Reading two consecutive versions side by side shows whose thinking moved. The words stay the student's own throughout, and the school supervisor remains the authority on scope and approval.

The school report says satisfactory and the mock says 4. Which record do we believe?+

Neither on its own. A report describes engagement and classwork across a term; a mock measures performance on specific question types under time. They can both be accurate and still disagree. The way to settle it is a marked script, because that shows which assessment objectives are costing marks. In practice a satisfactory report with a mid-band mock usually means a student who understands the chemistry in class and cannot yet produce it to markscheme wording under pressure, which is a technique problem rather than a content one.

Does IB Gram send a Chemistry tutor to our home in Abu Dhabi?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Abu Dhabi or anywhere else in the UAE; in-home visits are a service we run only in India. Chemistry Higher Level tuition for Abu Dhabi families is delivered one-to-one over live video, in Gulf Standard Time slots. The in-home market here is real and charges roughly AED 180-350 an hour according to the Bestimate 2026 rate survey, with more for scarce subjects. What online delivery buys you instead is a specialist chosen for the papers your child is losing marks on, and a written record of each session.

What does a Chemistry Higher Level specialist charge per hour in the Abu Dhabi market?+

Published market bands put qualified online subject tutors at roughly AED 150-300 an hour, IB and A-Level specialists at AED 200-450 and above, and in-home one-to-one at AED 180-350 with scarce subjects reported higher. TutorChase publishes AED 270 for its specialist tier and Unitors quotes IB tuition from AED 200. Those are other providers' figures, cited as market context rather than as our price. Ask for the current quote alongside the free trial, and check what the hour includes: marking, written notes and draft feedback are often billed separately elsewhere.

How long before a logged Chemistry Higher Level grade actually moves?+

Notation and recall categories usually show movement in two to three weeks. Command-term habits take three to four. Reasoning depth on the long extended-response items is the slow one, and it often stays flat through weeks five to eight before changing quickly. That middle period is where families lose confidence, which is why the category split matters more than the total: fewer notation marks lost and more marks attempted on long items is progress inside a static score. Without a week-one record there is nothing to compare, and the conversation becomes guesswork.

Is the chemistry data booklet something our son should be memorising?+

No, but he should be able to navigate it under time. The booklet is provided in the examination, and students lose marks less from not knowing a constant than from hunting for it, or from taking a value from the wrong table. The drill is mechanical and quick: timed searches for specific values before any chemistry is attempted, until the location of each section is automatic. Knowing which quantities are given also changes revision priorities, because effort spent memorising provided data is effort not spent on the reasoning the papers actually reward.

Can lessons shift to post-Iftar slots during Ramadan without losing the weekly record?+

Yes. Abu Dhabi school timetables compress during Ramadan and most families move sessions later in the evening, after Iftar, or to weekend mornings. Because delivery is online there is no travel to reschedule around, so a slot change is a calendar edit rather than a renegotiation. The written record continues unchanged: each session still returns an annotated script, a note and one named action. Families often use the shortened school days for a longer weekend block, which suits investigation work better than a weekday evening does.

Does ADEK publish anything that tells us whether our school's chemistry teaching is sound?+

ADEK supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in Abu Dhabi and publishes inspection outcomes, which are useful background about a school as a whole. They will not tell you about one department's Paper 2 results, and no inspection band answers the question you are actually asking. For that, request the assessment-objective breakdown behind your child's grade and ask where the class sits against the scheme of work. Those two answers tell you more about chemistry teaching than any published rating.

What is the tutor allowed to do with the investigation draft, and what is off limits?+

Allowed: teaching methodology, uncertainty treatment and evaluation structure; explaining the published criteria; reading the student's draft and responding with questions; showing worked examples on different data. Off limits: supplying text for the submission, rewriting paragraphs, choosing and processing the data, or anything that makes the report less than the student's own work. Submitting work that is not the candidate's own is a malpractice matter handled by the IB, and the consequence falls on the student. Dated drafts in the student's own voice are what makes the question unanswerable in the first place.

Do you publish an average grade improvement for Chemistry Higher Level students?+

No, and you should be careful with anyone who does. A figure like that means nothing without the number of students it covers, the dates it spans and the method used to collect it, and in this market such numbers frequently contradict other claims on the same page. No tutor can promise a grade, and nobody honest will. What is offered instead is auditable: a ranked diagnosis after the first session, an annotated script every week, dated investigation drafts, and a direct comparison of the week-one error categories with the week-twelve ones.

What happens if no Chemistry Higher Level specialist is free in our slot?+

You are told, rather than matched with the nearest available science graduate. If the slot is the constraint, the usual options are a different weekday evening, a weekend morning block, or a fortnightly 90-minute session with marked work in between. If the subject depth is the constraint, matching may take several days, and for Higher Level organic or electrochemistry work it occasionally takes longer. Where no UAE-based specialist covers the need, a tutor working from India at a Gulf Standard Time slot may be offered, and that is stated plainly before you book.

Start with one marked question, not a term of sessions

If Chemistry Higher Level is going badly, the fastest useful step is small. Send one marked question from the last paper your child sat, with the grade and whatever the teacher said about it. The free 45-minute diagnostic session returns a ranked split of where marks are being lost and an estimate in weeks for each category, with no card details required to book it. If that diagnosis does not match what you see at home, nothing further needs to happen. If it does, you have a plan that can be checked at week six instead of a term of sessions taken on trust.
