IB DP Biology HL Home Tutor in Abu Dhabi

Hiring an IB DP Biology HL home tutor in Abu Dhabi usually follows a report that says the student works hard and a mock that says 5. This page is about closing that gap with records rather than reassurance: a baseline paper sat before anything is taught, a mastery matrix across the four themes, markband placement on every long answer, and dated investigation drafts. Lessons run one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time, from Al Nahyan to Hudayriyat Island.

  • A full baseline paper sat and audited before any teaching begins
  • Theme-by-theme mastery matrix updated after each session
  • Long answers placed in a markband, with the reason stated
  • A free 45-minute trial lesson first, no card details required

Why a Biology Higher Level grade stays at 5 when the work is being done

Biology Higher Level has a reputation among Abu Dhabi parents for being the memorising science, and that reputation is the reason so many hard-working students stall at a 5. Recall is necessary and it is not what separates grade bands. The separation happens on the long written items of Paper 2, on the data-based half of Paper 1, and on an investigation that is marked against criteria most students never read properly. A tutor who responds to a stalled grade by covering more content is treating the symptom that is easiest to see.

This page is built around evidence because evidence is what decides where hours should go. Before teaching starts, the student sits a full Higher Level paper under time and it is audited: not scored, audited. Each loss is classified as a content gap or a technique gap, and each long answer is placed in a markband with the reason stated. That audit becomes the baseline, and every subsequent claim about progress is measured against it rather than against how the sessions felt.

The course itself is organised under four themes: unity and diversity, form and function, interaction and interdependence, and continuity and change. Each is examined across four levels of organisation, from molecules to ecosystems, which is why a student can know a topic at cell level and be unable to answer the same idea asked at ecosystem level. Higher Level adds depth within those themes rather than new units, so the common mistake in revision is treating Higher Level additions as a separate list to learn at the end.

Assessment is two written papers and one internal investigation. Paper 1 is 36 per cent and arrives in two halves that test different things: multiple-choice recall, then data-based questions on material the student has never seen. Paper 2 is 44 per cent and holds the short-answer and extended-response items where markbands are applied. The investigation is 20 per cent, marked by the school against published criteria and moderated externally on a sample. Those figures should decide the order in which a limited budget is spent.

Teaching is delivered one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time slots, which is what makes the evidence trail practical rather than aspirational. Long answers are written on a shared screen, annotated as they are produced, and saved. The mastery matrix updates during the session rather than from memory afterwards. Where AED figures appear on this page they are published market bands with the source named, describing what Abu Dhabi families are charged rather than setting out a price list. Read the audit section first if your child is already stuck; read the investigation section first if they are in DP1 and the research question has not been agreed, because that single decision carries more of the mark than anything else in the first year does.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Higher Level Biology is chosen early and judged late. The programmes below are where Abu Dhabi students arrive from, and the gap each one leaves is different.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

The two-year Diploma, with Biology as one of three Higher Level subjects for most students who take it at that depth. The course runs across four themes and four levels of organisation, with Higher Level material integrated into the same themes rather than appended. Assessment is two written papers plus one scientific investigation marked internally against published criteria. Students also carry Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service.

Higher Level Biology is one of the largest Higher Level entries in Abu Dhabi, driven by medicine, dentistry and health-science ambitions. Large groups mean teaching is pitched at the middle and the strong recall students look fine until Paper 2 arrives. The students who most need one-to-one hours in this emirate are frequently the diligent ones whose marks do not reflect their effort.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

Middle Years Programme

Five years assessed against four science criteria that reward investigation design, data processing and evaluation. For biology specifically, MYP prepares a student well for the Diploma investigation and poorly for the recall density and the extended written reasoning that Higher Level papers demand. The criteria never ask for a six-mark structured argument under time, so students meet that requirement for the first time in DP1.

Several Abu Dhabi IB continuum schools move students from MYP 5 straight into Higher Level Biology on the strength of criterion scores. Those scores do not predict Paper 2 performance. Where a family can afford only a short intervention in DP1, extended-answer structure is a better purchase than content coverage, because content will be taught in class and structure will not.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge and Edexcel upper secondary

Cambridge IGCSE Biology 0610 and Edexcel 4BI1 cover cells, transport, nutrition, respiration, genetics and ecology through directive questions with short mark tariffs. Students arrive in the Diploma with solid factual foundations and almost no experience of a question that supplies unfamiliar data and asks them to evaluate a claim from it. That is precisely what the data-based half of Paper 1 does.

Abu Dhabi's British-curriculum sector is large, so many Higher Level Biology groups are majority ex-IGCSE. The early sessions for these students concentrate on reading data they have not seen and on command terms, since the recall base is usually sound. The audit at the start exists partly to stop families from paying for content they already have.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Higher Level Biology is usually part of a science-heavy package. These are the subjects Abu Dhabi families most often ask about alongside it.

Biology

Higher Level

Four themes examined across four levels of organisation, with Higher Level depth integrated into each theme. Assessment is two written papers plus the scientific investigation. Mark loss concentrates in extended responses that list points instead of developing them, and in data-based questions answered from memory rather than from the figures supplied.

Biology

Standard Level

The same four themes with less depth, the same investigation weighting and shorter papers. Students who move down from Higher Level part way through usually keep the recall and need the technique work regardless, because the markbands on extended answers apply at both levels.

Chemistry

Higher Level and Standard Level

The standard companion for medicine and health-science routes. Mark loss here is quantitative rather than structural, so a student weak in chemistry and strong in biology recall usually needs two quite different kinds of session rather than more science hours in general.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

Standard Level and Higher Level

The statistics content is directly used in the biology investigation: standard deviation, correlation, error bars and significance testing. Students taking this course find the data processing criterion markedly easier, and those taking the other mathematics route often need the statistics taught separately.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

Standard Level and Higher Level

Strong algebra and little applied statistics, which is the reverse of what the biology investigation asks for. Abu Dhabi students on this route frequently need a short block on descriptive statistics and significance testing before they can process their own biology data.

Sports, Exercise and Health Science

Higher Level and Standard Level

Overlaps substantially with the human physiology material in biology, particularly respiration, circulation and energy systems. Students taking both can reuse revision across the two syllabuses if the sequencing is planned rather than accidental.

Environmental Systems and Societies

Higher Level and Standard Level

Shares the ecology and ecosystem material and adds systems thinking. A useful second option for students who want the biological content without the recall density of Higher Level Biology, though university requirements should be checked before any switch.

Psychology

Higher Level and Standard Level

Draws on the biological approach to behaviour, including neurotransmission and genetics. The written demands are closer to Biology Paper 2 extended responses than students expect, so structural work done for one subject tends to transfer to the other.

Extended Essay

Core

Frequently written in biology by Higher Level students, with supervision belonging to the school. A tutor's role is teaching research method and giving feedback on the student's own drafts, never supplying content for the submitted piece.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

Sits in the same DP1 and DP2 weeks as the biology investigation in most Abu Dhabi schools. Families planning hours around science deadlines alone often discover the student has no writing capacity left in exactly those weeks.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats cover nearly every Higher Level Biology request in Abu Dhabi, and each produces a different kind of record. All three are one-to-one over live video.

Audit then weekly long-answer work

The standard arrangement for a student whose grade has stalled. One baseline paper is sat and audited, then weekly sessions build extended-response structure on the themes where the audit found technique gaps. Each session returns the student's own long answer with a markband placement and the reason, which is the record that shows whether the writing is changing.

  • A full paper sat under time before any teaching
  • Each loss classified as content gap or technique gap
  • One long answer written and placed in a markband every week
  • The matrix updated during the session, not from memory later

Data and statistics block

A short block for the data-based half of Paper 1 and for the processing criterion of the investigation. The work is reading unfamiliar figures, stating a relationship in the quantities given, handling error bars and uncertainty, and choosing an appropriate statistical test. It suits students on the analysis mathematics route, who often have strong algebra and no applied statistics.

  • Built on unseen data sets, not on revised content
  • Descriptive statistics and significance testing taught explicitly
  • Error bars and uncertainty practised on the student's own results
  • Finishes with unseen data-based items attempted cold

Investigation draft sessions, dated

Sessions timed to the school's internal deadlines rather than the exam session. Methodology, sampling, statistics and evaluation are taught, then each draft the student writes is read and returned with questions. Versions are kept dated so the progression is visible. The report stays the student's own work from first version to submission.

  • Research question narrowed until it is answerable with school equipment
  • Sampling and replication planned before data collection starts
  • Feedback written as questions, never as replacement text
  • The school supervisor stays the authority on scope and approval

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Abu Dhabi

01

The baseline: a full Higher Level paper before anything is taught

The first paid hour is worth more spent measuring than teaching. A student sits a full Higher Level paper under genuine time conditions, and the result is audited rather than scored. Every loss is sorted into one of two buckets: a content gap, where the student did not know the biology, or a technique gap, where they knew it and did not collect the marks. Those two problems have different costs, different timescales and different fixes, and a grade on its own tells you nothing about the mix.

In Abu Dhabi cohorts the mix surprises most families. A diligent student stuck at 5 typically shows a small content deficit and a large technique deficit: multiple-choice items answered well, data-based items answered from memory instead of from the printed figures, and extended responses that list five undeveloped points where three developed ones were needed. That student does not need more content. Buying content hours for them is the single most common way a biology budget gets wasted in this emirate.

The audit is also what makes later claims checkable. It records, per component, how many marks were available, where the script landed, and which bucket each loss belonged to. Eight weeks later the same audit is run on a fresh paper, and the two are read side by side. If the technique bucket has shrunk and the total has barely moved, the work is landing and the score will follow. If neither has changed, something about the approach is wrong and more sessions will not repair it.

02

Four themes, four levels of organisation, and a matrix you can read

The biology course is arranged under four themes, each examined at four levels of organisation from molecules to ecosystems. That structure is the reason a student can seem to know a topic and fail a question on it: they learned it at the cell level and the question asked it at the ecosystem level, or they learned the structure and the question asked about the function. Revision organised as a list of topic names misses this entirely, which is why the matrix is built on theme and level rather than on chapter headings.

A mastery matrix is a plain grid with a status in each cell, updated during sessions rather than afterwards. The statuses are deliberately blunt: not met, taught, recalled unaided, produced under time. The last of those is the only one that predicts a paper mark, and most students have far fewer cells at that status than their effort would suggest. Making the distinction visible is usually the moment a family understands why the grade had not moved.

The matrix also tells you what not to buy. A cell marked produced under time does not need another session, however shaky the student feels about it, and a cell marked taught needs retrieval practice rather than re-teaching. Higher Level additions sit inside the themes rather than in a separate column, because treating them as an extra list to learn at the end is a reliable way to arrive at the final weeks with the hardest material untouched.

03

Paper 2 extended responses: how a markband actually gets applied

Paper 2 is 44 per cent of the Higher Level Biology grade and the extended-response items are where diligent students lose most. The marking is not a count of correct statements. A long answer is judged on whether points are developed, whether they are connected to the question asked, and whether the biology is used rather than recited. Five accurate but undeveloped sentences sit in a lower band than three sentences that each carry a cause and a consequence.

The practical repair is to make the markband visible during the session. The student writes the answer, then places it in a band themselves and says why, then reads the published criteria and revises the placement. Doing this a dozen times changes how they write, because they stop producing everything they know and start producing what the band description rewards. It is uncomfortable work for a confident student and it is the most reliable route from a 5 to a 6 in this subject.

There is a pacing dimension too, and the audit usually exposes it. Students who have been told that biology is about knowing things write at length on the early short-answer items and arrive at the long questions with insufficient time, leaving them partly blank. That is not a knowledge failure; it is a decision made under pressure. Timed practice with the long items attempted first reverses it within a few weeks, and the evidence of the change is visible on the next audited paper.

04

The data-based half of Paper 1, which almost nobody practises

Paper 1 is 36 per cent of the grade and arrives in two parts. The multiple-choice section rewards recall and elimination. The data-based section supplies figures, graphs or experimental results the student has never seen and asks them to interpret them. Because unfamiliar data cannot be revised, students revising by content list prepare thoroughly for the first part and not at all for the second, then conclude that they are unlucky with that section.

What can be practised is a routine, and it is short. Read the axes, the units and the scale before reading the question. State the relationship in the quantities actually given, not in the biology you remember. Identify the anomalous point or the plateau if there is one. Check whether the question asked you to describe, explain, deduce or evaluate, and answer only that. Students who adopt this routine reliably gain marks in this section within a few weeks of corrected practice, because the biology was never the limiting factor.

The spillover to the investigation is substantial and worth planning for. A student who practises reading other people's data learns to notice that error bars overlap, that a trend based on three replicates is not a finding, and that a correlation has not established a cause. The processing and evaluation criteria of the investigation reward exactly those observations. Families with limited hours should know that this block does double duty, which makes it the best-value purchase in the whole course.

05

Recall as a system rather than a virtue

Biology genuinely carries a heavy recall load, and the common approach to it is effort: more hours of reading, more highlighted notes, more flashcards made than used. Effort is not the variable. Spacing and retrieval are. A fact retrieved cold three times over three weeks is held; a fact reread six times in one evening is recognised and then lost. That difference is measurable, which means it can be recorded, and recording it is what stops a family paying for the same topic twice.

A workable system in a Diploma week is small. Each session ends with five items from previous themes, answered cold and logged as recalled or not. Items that fail return in a fortnight; items that pass three times in a row leave the rotation. The log is unglamorous and it shows something a grade cannot: whether the content base is actually growing or whether the student is running on short-term familiarity before each class test.

This is also where Higher Level Biology diverges from Chemistry at the same level. In chemistry a procedural fix can move a mark within a week. In biology the content base takes consistent retrieval over a term, and the written technique moves faster than the recall does. A family that expects both to move together will be disappointed in month two, which is why the matrix and the retrieval log are read as two separate records rather than merged into one impression of progress.

06

The investigation: version history, statistics and the boundary

The scientific investigation is 20 per cent of the grade and the only component that can be secured calmly, in term time, instead of defended under exam conditions. It is marked by the school against published criteria and moderated externally on a sample. Most of the mark is decided before any data exist, by the research question. A question about the effect of a specified variable range on one measurable outcome in a named organism is answerable; a question about what affects plant growth is not, and no amount of careful laboratory work rescues it.

The statistics catch Abu Dhabi students out more than the biology does. Replication, standard deviation, error bars and an appropriate significance test are expected, and students on the analysis mathematics route usually have not met them in a form they can apply. Teaching them on the student's own data rather than on a textbook example is the efficient route, and it pays twice because the same reasoning earns marks in the data-based section of Paper 1.

The boundary matters and it is simple to state. A tutor teaches method, statistics and evaluation structure, reads the student's draft and responds with questions: what does this graph show that your conclusion does not mention, why these replicates, what would a reader repeating your method get wrong? Drafts are kept dated so the progression is visible in the student's own voice. Finished investigations are sold in this market; submitting one is a malpractice matter handled by the IB and the consequence lands on the candidate. The school supervisor remains the authority on scope and approval.

07

When a Biology grade stalls between a 5 and a 6

This is the most common place for a Higher Level Biology student in Abu Dhabi to get stuck, and the stall has a characteristic shape. The content base is broad, the multiple-choice section is strong, the short answers are respectable, and the long answers keep landing mid-band. The student feels they are writing more and better; the score does not agree. Without a baseline audit this is where families either double the hours or change tutors, and neither action addresses what is happening.

What is happening is usually that the student is adding breadth to answers that needed depth. The fix is subtractive: fewer points, each carrying a mechanism and a consequence, tied explicitly to the question's wording. Measured on the matrix, the signal of progress is cells moving from recalled unaided to produced under time, and markband placements rising on the same question types rather than on easier ones. Both can be seen weeks before the next school assessment reports anything.

There is also an honest possibility that has to stay on the table: the limiting factor may not be biology. Students carrying a heavy written load across Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and two essay subjects sometimes have no capacity left for the long-answer practice this subject needs, and buying more biology hours into that week makes things worse. The audit occasionally shows that the right advice is to reduce commitments for a month rather than add a session, and a tutor who never reaches that conclusion is not reading the record carefully.

08

An in-home biology tutor in Abu Dhabi against online, judged on the record each leaves

In-home biology tuition in Abu Dhabi is a real market and worth describing accurately before comparing it. Published bands put in-home one-to-one at roughly AED 180-350 an hour in the Bestimate 2026 rate survey, with reported rates up to AED 500 where the subject is scarce or the journey is long. Part of what you pay for is travel, and travel also determines who is available to you: the pool is whoever will cross the emirate to reach Al Ghadeer or Al Jubail Island at 17:30.

IB Gram does not offer home visits in Abu Dhabi or anywhere else in the UAE; in-home visits are a service we run only in India. Higher Level Biology teaching for Abu Dhabi families is delivered one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time slots. The honest trade is this: you lose a person in the room, and you gain a biology specialist selected because they mark the question types your child is losing marks on, at a rate that carries no travel component.

For a subject assessed through extended writing and data interpretation, the format also decides whether a record exists at all. Long answers are produced on a shared screen, placed in a markband as they are written, and saved. The matrix and the retrieval log update live. In an in-home arrangement the same teaching can happen and the artefacts usually stay in the student's notebook, with the parent receiving a verbal summary at the door. The comparison below is on the points that genuinely differ.

09

ADEK, your child's own teacher, and the permit question

Private schools in Abu Dhabi fall under the Department of Education and Knowledge, which supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate and publishes inspection outcomes on its own site. For a biology decision the inspection report is context rather than diagnosis. The documents that help are the ones the school already holds: the assessment-objective breakdown behind your child's grade, the scheme of work, and the internal deadline calendar for the investigation.

There is a rule specific to this emirate that families should know before accepting an offer of private lessons. ADEK's professional-ethics expectations for private and charter school staff have been reported as prohibiting paid private tutoring of students enrolled at the teacher's own school, and a teacher tutoring privately is required to hold the MoHRE private tuition work permit introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023. That permit is granted free of charge for two years, and individuals tutoring without one are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. Verify the current ADEK wording with the school or on ADEK's own policy pages before relying on it.

The practical reading is straightforward. Paying your child's own biology teacher for private sessions is not the convenient shortcut it appears to be, and asking any tutor whether they hold the MoHRE permit is a fair question with a checkable answer. The permit can be applied for through MoHRE's own channels, and the relevant service page lists no fee. None of this makes a tutor good at teaching Paper 2 extended responses, but a provider evasive about the permit is telling you something about everything else as well.

10

If the slot or the specialist is not available

Coverage limits are worth publishing rather than discovering. Higher Level Biology is one of the better-covered subjects in this set, which means most Abu Dhabi requests are matched within a few days. The constraint is rarely the subject and usually the hour: between 17:00 and 19:00 Gulf Standard Time on weekdays in the two months before mocks, demand across the Diploma sciences is at its highest and the best specialists are already committed.

When the slot is the problem the options are mundane and effective: a different weekday, a weekend morning, or a fortnightly 90-minute session with marked written work in between. The last of these works better for biology than it does for chemistry, because long-answer practice can be set, written and returned asynchronously, with the live session used for markband judgement rather than for teaching. The matrix and the retrieval log keep the arrangement honest in a longer gap.

When the depth is the problem you are told so. For statistics-heavy investigation work or for Higher Level genetics and physiology, matching can take longer, and where no UAE-based specialist covers the need a tutor working from India in a Gulf Standard Time slot may be offered. That is stated before any booking, along with what it changes and what it does not. Nobody is matched with the nearest available science graduate to fill a gap. If the wait is longer than the deadline allows, saying so is more useful than filling the slot badly and discovering the mismatch three paid sessions later.

Abu Dhabi communities our Higher Level Biology students live in

None of these areas is harder to serve than another, because nobody travels. What differs is the hour at which a session can start, which depends on the school run and the activities that follow it.

Al Maryah Island

Apartment living in the commercial centre, with students attending schools on the island and the near mainland. Short journeys mean a 17:00 start is realistic, and midweek sessions rarely need rescheduling.

Al Nahyan

An established inner-city area close to several Diploma schools. Families here often run two or three subjects across the week, so biology is scheduled around the heaviest written subject rather than first.

Al Zahiyah

Dense central housing where after-school tuition competes with sports and music commitments. Weekend morning blocks are the most reliable option for the long-answer work this subject needs.

Eastern Mangroves

A small waterside community with students bussed to schools across the city. Pick-up times run late, so biology sessions here usually sit at 18:00 or later on weekdays.

Hudayriyat Island

A newer residential and leisure district where sporting commitments dominate the afternoon. Families commonly take a single 90-minute weekend block rather than two weekday evenings.

Al Jubail Island

A low-density community with long journeys to most Diploma schools. The travel involved is the usual reason families here stop looking for an in-home tutor and move to online sessions.

Al Raha Gardens

A villa community on the airport corridor feeding several nearby schools. Journeys are moderate and 17:30 slots are the most commonly held, with a second weekend session added before mocks.

Al Ghadeer

On the emirate boundary, with students travelling towards both Abu Dhabi and Dubai schools. Journey times are the longest in this list, which is why a fixed online slot removes the main cause of cancelled lessons.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Abu Dhabi

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the script, not the summary

The most useful first message includes the last paper your child sat and the grade it produced, ideally with one long answer photographed. A report saying the student is conscientious tells a tutor nothing they can act on. One mid-band extended response tells them where the next eight weeks should go.

  2. 02

A free 45-minute trial, used for the audit

The trial is a working session with no card details required. The student attempts items across the components and the tutor sorts the losses into content gaps and technique gaps, placing any long answer in a markband with the reason. You receive that split and an estimate of how long each part would take to close.

Build the matrix, set the retrieval rotation

Themes and levels of organisation are entered as a grid with blunt statuses, and five cold recall items are added to the end of every session. Both records are updated during sessions rather than reconstructed later. The point is that a parent can look at them without needing them explained.

  4. 04

Weekly long answers, placed in a band

Every week the student writes one extended response under time, places it in a markband themselves, then revises that placement against the published criteria. The answer and the placement are saved. This is the artefact that shows movement weeks before any school assessment does.

  5. 05

    Re-audit at week eight

A fresh paper is sat and audited the same way, and the two audits are read side by side. The question is whether the technique bucket has shrunk, not whether the total has risen. If neither has changed, the approach is altered or the arrangement stops, and stopping is a legitimate outcome rather than a failure to upsell.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Measurement before teaching

A full paper is sat and audited before the first lesson, and every loss is classified as a content gap or a technique gap. For a diligent student stuck at 5 the split is usually lopsided towards technique, which means the content hours most families buy first are the ones least likely to help.

Markbands made visible

Long answers are placed in a band by the student, with the reason stated, then checked against the published criteria. Doing that repeatedly changes how a student writes under time, which is the mechanism by which a biology grade actually moves rather than the hope that more content will do it.

Retrieval logged, not assumed

Five cold items from earlier themes close every session and are recorded as recalled or not. Items that fail come back in a fortnight. This makes the difference between a growing content base and short-term familiarity visible, which no grade on a report can show you.

Statistics taught where they are needed

Investigation processing demands replication, standard deviation, error bars and an appropriate significance test. Students on the analysis mathematics route usually have not met them in applicable form, so matching accounts for that rather than assuming any biologist will cover it.

A line on coursework stated in advance

Investigation feedback arrives as questions on dated drafts and the report stays the student's own work. Finished investigations are openly sold in this market and the malpractice consequence falls on the candidate, which is why the version history matters as protection and not just as evidence.

No invented statistics

No success rate, no average grade movement, no star rating appears on this page. AED figures are published market bands with their source and year named. What is offered instead is an auditable set of records, which is a smaller claim and one you can check yourself.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

What does a baseline Biology Higher Level paper tell us that the school report does not?+

It separates two problems a grade combines. The audit records, component by component, whether each lost mark was a content gap or a technique gap, and places every long answer in a markband with the reason. A report says conscientious and a mock says 5; the audit says the multiple-choice section is strong, the data-based answers were written from memory, and the extended responses listed five points and developed none. Those are three different instructions for the next eight weeks, and only the audit produces them.

How do we know whether the problem is biology content or exam technique?+

By classifying the losses rather than totalling them. Content gaps cluster: a whole sub-topic scores poorly across question types. Technique gaps spread: marks are lost on question types irrespective of topic, typically where the command term was explain and the answer described, or where the data printed in the question were never referenced. For a hard-working Abu Dhabi student stuck at 5 the split is usually weighted heavily towards technique, which matters because content hours are the most common and least useful first purchase.

Which of the four Biology themes do Abu Dhabi students arrive weakest in?+

Interaction and interdependence most often, because its ecological and homeostatic material asks students to connect causes to consequences across levels of organisation rather than to recall structures. Continuity and change is the next, usually because the genetics questions require reasoning to be written out and students set out the calculation alone. Form and function is generally the strongest on arrival, since it rewards the structural recall that IGCSE and MYP courses build well. The matrix records this per student rather than relying on the pattern.

What do the Paper 2 markbands actually reward in a long biology answer?+

Development and relevance, not quantity. A point that carries a mechanism and a consequence and is tied to the question's wording earns more than three accurate sentences that sit next to each other. Answers that recite everything known about a topic typically land mid-band however correct they are. The repair is subtractive: fewer points, each developed, each explicitly answering the term used in the question. Practising the placement itself, out loud, against the published criteria, changes how a student writes faster than being told the rule does.

Our son writes pages and scores mid-band. What is being marked down?+

Usually nothing is being marked down. The marks were never available for what he wrote. Long answers are judged on developed, relevant points, so volume without development reaches a ceiling quickly, and a student who writes at length on the earlier short items often arrives at the long questions with too little time left. Both show up clearly on an audited paper: pages of accurate biology, mid-band placement, and one extended response partly blank. Both are fixable in weeks because neither is a knowledge problem.

How is recall tracked so we can see it improving?+

Five items from earlier themes are answered cold at the end of each session and logged as recalled or not. Items that fail return in a fortnight; items recalled three times in succession leave the rotation. The log shows whether the content base is genuinely growing or whether the student is running on familiarity built the night before each class test. It is a dull document and it is the only honest answer to the question of whether a memorising-heavy subject is actually being learned.

Does the Biology Higher Level investigation need statistical tests?+

It needs data processed to a standard the criteria can reward, and in practice that means replication, a measure of spread such as standard deviation, error bars where appropriate, and a justified significance test when the question involves comparing groups. Students on the applications and interpretation mathematics route usually have the tools. Students on the analysis route often do not, and teaching them on the student's own data is the efficient route. The same reasoning earns marks in the data-based section of Paper 1, so the block pays twice.

Can we see the version history of the biology investigation drafts?+

Yes, and keeping it is deliberate. Each draft is dated and stored alongside the feedback that prompted the next one, and the feedback is phrased as questions rather than as replacement text: why these replicates, what does this graph show that the conclusion omits, what would a reader repeating the method get wrong. Reading two consecutive versions shows whose thinking moved. The words remain the student's own throughout, and the school supervisor stays the authority on scope, approval and submission.

Which universities ask for Biology at Higher Level rather than Standard Level?+

That varies by country, institution and programme, and the only reliable source is each programme's own admissions page. Many medical, dental and veterinary routes specify Higher Level Biology or Higher Level Chemistry, sometimes both, and some health-science and biomedical degrees accept Standard Level. Check before DP1 subject choices are confirmed, because changing level later is disruptive and occasionally not possible. No tutor should encourage you to assume a requirement that the university states clearly in writing.

Does IB Gram provide an in-home biology tutor anywhere in Abu Dhabi?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Abu Dhabi or anywhere else in the UAE; in-home visits are a service we run only in India. Higher Level Biology teaching for Abu Dhabi families runs one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time slots. The local in-home market is genuine, with published bands of roughly AED 180-350 an hour and higher for scarce subjects. What online delivery gives you instead is a specialist chosen from the audit rather than from a travel radius, and a record of every long answer.

How many weeks before a stalled Biology grade starts moving again?+

Written technique shows first, typically in three to five weeks of weekly long answers placed in a band. The recall base moves more slowly, over a term, because it depends on spaced retrieval rather than on teaching. The two records are read separately for that reason, since a family expecting both to move together will conclude in month two that nothing is working. The honest signal of progress at that point is markband placements rising on the same question types, not a higher total.

What does a Biology Higher Level tutor charge in Abu Dhabi, and what should the hour include?+

Published market bands put qualified online subject tutors at roughly AED 150-300 an hour and IB specialists at AED 200-450 and above, with in-home one-to-one at about AED 180-350 on the Bestimate 2026 survey. Unitors advertises IB tuition from AED 200 and TutorChase publishes AED 270 for its specialist tier; those are their figures, cited as market context rather than our price. Ask specifically whether marking long answers, written records and draft feedback are inside the hour, because elsewhere they are often extra.

Can my daughter's own biology teacher at her Abu Dhabi school tutor her privately?+

Treat that offer carefully. The permit is granted free of charge for two years. Confirm the current wording with the school or on ADEK's own policy pages, and be aware that the person with the most to lose from an irregular arrangement is usually the teacher.

Do you publish a figure for how much Biology grades improve?+

No. A figure like that is meaningless without the number of students behind it, the dates it covers and the method used to collect it, and several providers in this market publish improvement percentages that contradict other claims on the same page. Nobody can promise a grade. What can be offered is checkable by you: a baseline audit, a mastery matrix, a retrieval log, weekly markband placements and dated investigation drafts, plus a second audit at week eight to compare with the first.

We travel for work and miss weeks at a time. Does the record survive that?+

It is built to. The matrix and the retrieval log are the continuity, so a gap of three weeks means the rotation returns older items rather than the plan restarting. For families moving between Abu Dhabi and abroad regularly, the fortnightly pattern with written work set between sessions usually fits better than a weekly slot that keeps being cancelled. Sessions run in Gulf Standard Time by default and can be held at a different hour while you travel, since nothing about the arrangement depends on being in the emirate.

Measure the paper before buying the term

If Higher Level Biology has stalled while the effort has not, the useful first step is an audit rather than a schedule. Send the last paper your child sat, with one extended response photographed if you have it. The free 45-minute session sorts the losses into content gaps and technique gaps, places a long answer in a markband with the reason, and estimates how long each part would take to close. No card details are required. You may find the answer is four weeks of long-answer practice rather than a term of content revision, which is a cheaper and faster conclusion than most families expect.
