IB DP Physics SL Home Tutor in Abu Dhabi

Most families who hire an IB DP physics SL home tutor in Abu Dhabi find out whether it worked at the next mock, three months and several thousand dirhams later. It does not have to be that way. Standard Level Physics generates more checkable evidence than almost any other Diploma subject, and this page is about which evidence to ask for and when. Lessons from IB Gram run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

  • A named error tracked week to week and reported in writing
  • Marked against published schemes, question by question, not as a percentage

IB & IGCSE in Abu Dhabi

Judging Physics support on evidence rather than on atmosphere

There is a version of tutoring that happens in a great many Abu Dhabi households. A capable tutor arrives on time, the sessions are calm, your child does not complain, and everybody agrees things are improving. Then a mock lands at roughly the mark it would have landed at anyway. Nothing was done wrong exactly; it is simply that nobody decided at the outset what evidence of progress would look like, so for three months there was nothing to check and therefore nothing to correct.

Standard Level Physics is a good subject to fix this in, because it produces an unusual quantity of markable material. Past-paper questions with published mark schemes. A data-based section of the first paper that can be marked in twenty minutes. An extended-response paper whose mark schemes name the physics they want. A scientific investigation worth 20 per cent, marked out of 24 across four criteria of six, written in drafts across weeks. A practical programme of around forty hours producing real data tables. Every one of those is an artefact that can be looked at rather than described.

The failures are specific too, which is what makes counting possible. A Standard Level Physics candidate losing marks is usually losing them in a small number of identifiable ways: answers quoted without units or to a calculator's full display, algebra attempted before any physical principle is stated, uncertainties written down but never propagated, and evaluation sections filled with generic remarks about human error. Those recur across papers. A tutor who claims the student is improving should be able to show the count falling.

On delivery, the plain statement belongs near the top. IB Gram does not send a tutor to a UAE address: home visits in Abu Dhabi are not part of what we sell, and that service exists only in India. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time with the same tutor each week. For the evidence question that turns out to matter: work set in a video session is marked between sessions and returned in writing, so a family in Al Reef or Shakhbout City holds a dated record rather than a verbal summary given on the doorstep.

The rest of this page is practical. Which Physics artefacts exist and who holds them. Three questions you can ask a sixteen-year-old that reveal more than a mock mark does. What the Standard Level papers contain and the metric to track on each. How to translate a school report phrase into one of the five themes. What each pass over an investigation draft should change, and which of the four criteria is at stake. What should be visible at four, eight and twelve weeks. Why marks and grades move on different clocks. And, for families in the middle of it, what evidence should decide a move from Higher Level down to Standard Level.

At a glance

  • Paper 1 splits into multiple-choice and data-based sections; track them apart
  • Investigation: 24 marks, four criteria of six, within 3,000 words
  • Evidence to ask for: marks by question, plus a named error count
  • Review points agreed before the first paid session, not after the third
  • Lessons run one-to-one over live video, never at a UAE address
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

What can be measured depends on what gets marked, and that differs by programme. These are the programmes behind an Abu Dhabi Physics enquiry and the evidence each one generates.

DPAges 16-19 · DP1 and DP2

Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three normally at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS. Standard Level Physics is 150 hours including around forty hours of practical work, assessed by two written papers carrying 80 per cent between them and an internally assessed investigation at 20 per cent, marked out of 24.

Abu Dhabi schools report Diploma science progress in incompatible formats: a 1-7 prediction at one school, percentages at another, criterion comments at a third. Parents comparing notes across Khalifa City and Al Bateen are often comparing different scales entirely. The artefact that travels between schools is a marked script with per-question marks on it, which is why that is the thing to ask for.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

Middle Years Programme

Eight subject groups marked against four criteria each on a 1-8 scale. MYP sciences assess knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and the impact of science, which is a close ancestor of the Diploma investigation criteria.

A student whose MYP criterion for processing and evaluating was consistently weak will almost certainly lose marks in the Diploma investigation's data analysis and evaluation sections. That is a free early signal sitting in the school's own records, and almost no Abu Dhabi family is told to look for it.

CPAges 16-19

Career-related Programme

Two or more Diploma courses taken with a career-related study, a reflective project and a personal and professional skills course. A student taking Physics inside this programme sits the same papers and submits the same investigation, so the evidence to track is identical.

In Abu Dhabi this route surfaces mainly in conversations about load. If the evidence is flat across three subjects simultaneously, the cause is usually the timetable rather than the teaching in any one of them, and the conversation belongs with the Diploma coordinator.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Different subjects leave different evidence. These are the subjects most often supported alongside Standard Level Physics in Abu Dhabi, with the specific thing worth measuring in each.

Physics

SL

Measure per-question marks on timed papers, the count of answers missing units or quoted to a calculator's full display, and whether a stated principle appears before the algebra. All three move before the overall percentage does, and all three are visible on any marked script.

Physics

HL

The same five themes over 240 hours, adding rigid body mechanics, relativity, thermodynamics, induction and quantum physics plus extensions inside shared subtopics. Track the same metrics with Theme D questions logged separately, because that theme fails structurally rather than by degrees.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Marked on the same four investigation criteria out of 24, with the same word ceiling. A student taking both sciences should have the two internal deadlines mapped, because they frequently land in the same fortnight and the second one gets written badly.

Biology

HL and SL

Also 24 marks across research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. Uncertainty handling learned properly for Physics transfers directly, and a student relearning it from scratch for the second science is wasting hours nobody is counting.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Supplies the algebraic fluency and calculus Physics assumes. Where Physics marks are slipping, check the maths script too: a student who cannot rearrange quickly under time pressure produces physics errors that look like physics gaps.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Entirely compatible with Standard Level Physics. Its statistics and graphing work actively helps with the data-based paper, while the calculus is numerical, so exponential decay and oscillation forms may need teaching rather than assuming.

Design Technology

HL and SL

The iterative design process is close kin to the investigation's research-design criterion. Evidence of progress here is whether a student can plan a fair test unprompted, which is the first six marks of the Physics investigation.

Computer Science

HL and SL

Shares systematic debugging habits and data handling. A student who can trace an algorithm methodically has the disposition the data-based Physics paper rewards, and often has not been told the two things are related.

Extended Essay in Physics

Core

A 4,000-word independent investigation taken by a minority of Standard Level students. Progress is visible as draft-to-draft movement against its own criteria, and the usual failure is a research question that the available equipment cannot answer.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

One essay and one exhibition against published criteria, so there is little to measure weekly. Physics students have strong material: what a measurement with an uncertainty actually claims, and when a model is replaced rather than corrected.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats, each producing a different kind of evidence. All run one-to-one over live video, and the right choice follows from what you need to be able to see.

Weekly hour with marked work in between

Work set at the end of each session, attempted independently, marked against the published scheme before the next session, and a two-line note naming the error being tracked. Over six weeks that produces a stack of marked attempts in which a specific error either declines or does not, which is the only honest answer to whether the arrangement is working.

  • Same tutor, same slot, same level all term
  • Mark schemes applied question by question, not a percentage written on top
  • One named error tracked across consecutive pieces
  • A review point agreed at the start, four to six weeks out

Data-paper cycle

A fortnightly data-based section under timed conditions, marked against the scheme, with the session spent on what the marking revealed. This is the fastest evidence to generate in Physics because the same measurement repeats on the same scale, and it improves the investigation at the same time.

  • Gradients interpreted as physical quantities with units
  • Uncertainty propagation marked strictly, every time
  • Completion time logged alongside the mark
  • One error type chased across consecutive attempts

Investigation draft review

Three to five sessions timed to the school's internal deadlines, each addressing one of the four criteria on the student's own draft. Progress is visible as movement between dated drafts, and the trail doubles as a record that the report is genuinely the candidate's own work.

  • Research question and variables settled before data collection
  • One criterion named per pass, in writing
  • The 3,000-word ceiling treated as a design constraint
  • Every revision carried out by the student

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Abu Dhabi

01

The Physics evidence that already exists, and who is holding it

  • The school holds comparative set data you cannot get anywhere else
  • Published in-home band: AED 180-350, reaching about 500
  • IB specialist band: AED 200-450; TutorChase publishes AED 270
  • Arrive at the first lesson with a script, a data table and the deadlines

Before buying anything, find out what evidence already exists, because most of it is free and most families never ask for it. The school holds more than parents realise: marked papers with per-question marks, a comparison of your child's marks against the set, a practical record from the experimental programme, the internal deadlines for the investigation, and a view on what a predicted grade would rest on. None of that arrives unprompted, and all of it is available to a parent who asks a specific question.

For context on what the alternative costs, published UAE market rates put in-home one-to-one work at roughly AED 180 to 350 an hour and up to about AED 500 at the specialist end, with IB, IGCSE and A-Level specialists quoted at AED 200 to 450 and TutorChase publishing AED 270. At those rates it is worth spending twenty minutes gathering the free evidence first, because it frequently changes the diagnosis and occasionally removes the need to buy anything at all.

IB Gram delivers Standard Level Physics support one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. We do not send a tutor to a UAE address, and home visits in Abu Dhabi are not something we sell; that service exists only in India. One consequence is procedural and useful: work set in a session is marked between sessions and sent back in writing, so the evidence trail accumulates by default rather than depending on anyone remembering to summarise.

The table lists the artefacts worth collecting, who holds each one, what it actually proves and how to get hold of it. Treat it as a checklist for the week before you hire anyone. Families who arrive at a first lesson with a marked paper, a data table and the investigation deadline dates get a diagnosis in one hour. Families who arrive with a description get a conversation.

02

Three questions that tell you more than a mock mark

  • Ask what a gradient means physically, not how to calculate it
  • Ask a prediction question with no numbers in it
  • Ask which principle they would write down first
  • Listen to the shape of the answer, not whether it is right

A mock mark is a single number standing in for a dozen different possible problems. Three questions, asked of the student directly, separate those problems faster than any score. They take ten minutes, they need no equipment, and a parent with no physics can run them, because what you are listening for is the shape of the answer rather than its correctness.

First, hand over a graph from a recent piece of work and ask what the gradient means. Not how to calculate it, but what physical quantity it is and in what units. A student who answers immediately has the data skills the course rewards. A student who starts computing a number has learned a procedure without its meaning, which is the exact failure the data-based paper is built to expose, and it is highly fixable.

Second, ask a prediction question with no numbers in it. If the separation doubles and the mass stays the same, what happens to the force, and why. A student who reasons from the relationship is in good shape. A student who reaches for a formula sheet is pattern-matching, and pattern-matching holds up through the early mechanics and collapses in fields. That is a representation problem rather than a knowledge gap, and it responds to two or three deliberate sessions rather than to months of practice.

Third, ask what principle they would write down first for a question they have already attempted. Conservation of energy, Newton's second law, the changing flux. A candidate who names a principle before touching the algebra is collecting the reasoning marks that the extended-response paper is mostly made of. One who starts rearranging immediately is leaving those marks on the page, and will keep doing so until somebody makes the habit explicit.

03

The Standard Level papers, and the metric to track on each

Standard Level Physics is assessed by two written papers carrying 80 per cent between them and an internally assessed investigation carrying 20 per cent. The first paper divides into a multiple-choice section across the whole syllabus and a data-based and experimental section, and those two halves reward almost opposite habits. The second paper is short answer and extended response, and it is the one where the largest single block of marks sits.

Tracking them separately is the whole trick, because a combined mark conceals which half is weak. A student can be quick and accurate on multiple choice and poor at reading a graph, or thorough on data questions and too slow to finish the multiple-choice section. Both patterns produce the same middling total and need opposite remedies. Ask for the two sections marked and reported separately, every time, and record them separately in whatever you keep.

For the extended-response paper the metric worth counting is not the mark but the presence of a stated principle. Go through a marked script and count the questions where the student wrote a physical statement before the algebra. That count rising is the mechanism by which the mark rises, and it rises first. The other count worth keeping is answers missing units or quoted to a calculator's full display, which should fall towards zero within a month of anyone paying attention to it.

Confirm durations, mark totals and weightings against your child's own copy of the current subject guide, which the school issues and the IB revises periodically. A good deal of material online still describes the previous sciences model, which is a genuine hazard in this subject. What is stable enough to build a tracking system on is the structure: a split first paper, an extended-response second paper, and an investigation marked out of 24 across four equal criteria.

Turning a school report phrase into a theme

Abu Dhabi science reports are written in a vocabulary that sounds informative and is not. 'Needs to apply knowledge to unfamiliar contexts' almost always means the student has learned question types rather than principles. 'Requires more precision' usually means units and significant figures. 'Developing analytical skills' typically means the data-based section. Each of those phrases points to a specific theme or component, and translating it is free and takes one email to the teacher.

The five themes are worth knowing by letter, because schemes of work use them. Theme A is space, time and motion. Theme B is the particulate nature of matter. Theme C is wave behaviour. Theme D is fields. Theme E is nuclear and quantum physics. A Standard Level student takes all five without the Higher Level subtopics, which means no rigid body mechanics, no relativity, no thermodynamics, no induction and no quantum physics, and without the Higher Level extensions inside shared subtopics.

That exclusion list matters when reading advice online, because a great deal of it is written for Higher Level candidates. A Standard Level student worrying about induction is worrying about material they will not be examined on, and a tutor quoting for it is quoting for the wrong course. Equally, a Standard Level student who has been given Higher Level practice questions will produce scores that mean nothing, which is a surprisingly common source of unnecessary panic in DP2.

The table maps each theme against the report language that usually accompanies it, what that language actually means, and the evidence that would show the problem had been resolved. It is written to be taken to a parents' evening and used as a list of questions rather than read as a description.

THE FIVE THEMES, REPORT LANGUAGE AND PROOF OF A FIX
ThemeHow a report usually phrases the weaknessWhat it actually meansEvidence it has been fixed
A — Space, time and motion'Inconsistent with problem solving'Energy and momentum questions attempted by formula search rather than by choosing a conservation principleA principle named in writing before the algebra, on every extended question
B — The particulate nature of matter'Confuses related concepts'Temperature, internal energy and heat used interchangeably, and circuit reasoning done by roteCorrect distinctions used unprompted in a written answer
C — Wave behaviour'Struggles with abstract material'Phase, superposition and resonance treated as vocabulary rather than as behaviourA qualitative prediction given correctly before any calculation
D — Fields'Needs to apply knowledge to unfamiliar contexts'No mental picture of a field, so every question becomes a search for a matching equationCorrect answers to proportional reasoning questions containing no numbers
E — Nuclear and quantum physics'Requires more precision'Decay and energy calculations done with inconsistent units or careless orders of magnitudeUnits present on every answer and figures justified rather than copied
05

The investigation, draft by draft, at Standard Level

The scientific investigation is the one component where progress can be watched rather than inferred. It carries 20 per cent of the Standard Level grade, is marked out of 24 across four criteria worth six marks each, and is capped at 3,000 words. The four criteria are research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. Because they are equal, a beautifully executed experiment with a thin evaluation scores no better than a modest experiment that is evaluated properly, which is not what most students assume.

The decisive pass is the first one, before any data exists. A research question with a defined independent variable, a defined dependent variable, controlled variables that are actually controllable in a school laboratory, and a method capable of producing enough data over a wide enough range to test anything. Students who start collecting before this is settled usually end up with a dataset that cannot answer their own question, and no later analysis recovers those marks.

Later passes should each target one criterion, in an order that respects dependency. Data analysis before conclusion, because a conclusion rests on processed data with propagated uncertainties. Conclusion before evaluation, because an evaluation has to explain the gap between what was found and what was expected. Evaluation last, and specifically: quantified weaknesses with realistic improvements, not a paragraph about human error. The table sets out the sequence so a family can tell whether a draft is moving or merely being retyped.

The boundary protects the student and we state it rather than imply it. A tutor explains what each criterion asks, teaches the physics and the analysis techniques needed, reads the draft and names where marks are being lost, and sets the next revision for the student to carry out. No part of the submitted report originates with a tutor and nothing is rewritten into final form. Keep the dated feedback; where a school asks about the provenance of internally assessed work, a trail of the student's own revisions is the clearest possible answer.

What four, eight and twelve weeks should show in Physics

  • Week 4: marked work exists and units and principles are appearing
  • Week 8: a second timed paper on the same scale, marked by question
  • Week 12: continue, change or stop, on the evidence
  • The data-based section is usually where movement shows first

At four weeks the question is narrow: has a presentation or reasoning habit started to change. You should hold three or four marked pieces with the published scheme applied, a baseline timed section, and a short note after each session naming the error being tracked. The claim at this stage is modest and checkable: fewer answers missing units, and a stated principle appearing on more extended questions. If none of that exists, the problem is the arrangement rather than the student.

At eight weeks the question becomes whether the habit has converted into marks under conditions. That needs a second timed paper on the same scale as the baseline, marked question by question so the two can be laid side by side. A gain concentrated in the question types that were targeted is strong evidence. A gain scattered randomly may be noise, and saying so is more useful than celebrating it. The data-based section is usually where movement shows first, because it is the most trainable component in the course.

At twelve weeks the decision is continue, change or stop. By then there should be two or three comparable papers, a declining count on the tracked error, and an investigation that has moved on at least one named criterion. If all three hold, the plan is working and the sensible move may be to reduce intensity rather than extend it. If the papers are flat, buying more of the same is the least promising option available, and changing the diagnosis or the match is more likely to help.

The entire structure rests on one decision taken at the start, which costs nothing. Agree, before the first paid session, what will be looked at and when. Families who do that almost never spend a fourth month on a plan that was never going to deliver, and the awkward conversation about whether any of this is working simply does not arise, because the answer was already written down.

07

Marks, grades and what nobody can promise

  • Boundaries are set per session after marking and are not published in advance
  • Report progress in marks on a stated scale; the grade follows
  • Predicted grades rest on the school's own evidence, not a tutor's view
  • Rising physics marks beside falling everything else is not a success

Marks and grades do not move together, and conflating them causes a lot of avoidable disappointment in DP2. Grade boundaries are set per session by the IB after the papers have been marked, they shift from session to session, and they are not published in advance. A student who gains eight marks on an extended-response paper has unambiguously improved and may or may not have crossed a boundary. The honest way to report progress is in marks on a stated scale, with the grade treated as a consequence.

This is why no tutor should be offering a specific grade, a points total or a stated improvement, and why a page that does is telling you something about itself rather than about physics. What can be committed to is process: work set and marked, a named error tracked, written notes, and a plan that changes when the evidence says it should. Anything beyond that is selling a certainty the assessment system does not contain.

Predicted grades belong to the school. A prediction is a teacher's professional judgement submitted for university applications on the basis of the evidence the school holds, which is its own assessments, mocks and classwork. Tutoring influences it only indirectly, by improving the work the school sees. Asking a school to revise a prediction because a tutor disagrees does not work; asking the teacher what the student must demonstrate in the school's own assessments for the prediction to move does.

One further honest caveat. Standard Level Physics sits inside a Diploma with five other subjects, an Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge in it. A student whose physics marks climb while three other subjects slide has not been helped overall, and a tutor who notices that pattern should name it. Several times a year the right recommendation is fewer physics hours and a conversation with the Diploma coordinator about load.

08

Moving down from Higher Level: the evidence that should decide it

  • Standard Level drops rigid body mechanics, relativity, thermodynamics, induction and quantum physics
  • The investigation and its four criteria carry across unchanged
  • Annotate a marked script to separate Higher Level-only losses from shared ones
  • If the losses are habits, stepping down will not fix them

A meaningful share of Standard Level Physics enquiries in Abu Dhabi come from families part-way through a Higher Level course, asking whether to step down. It is a legitimate question and it should be answered with evidence rather than with sentiment. What a Standard Level student drops is the Higher Level-only material, including rigid body mechanics, relativity, thermodynamics, induction and quantum physics, along with the extensions inside shared subtopics. The investigation carries across unchanged, and so do all four of its criteria.

The evidence worth gathering before the conversation is specific. How many of the lost marks on recent papers came from Higher Level-only content as against shared material. Whether the student's data-based and reasoning habits are sound, because if they are not, the same habits will cost marks at Standard Level too. Whether the physics is the problem at all, or whether the underlying mathematics is. And what the student's other five subjects look like, because a step down taken to protect two other grades is a different decision from one taken because physics is unreachable.

The timing is a school matter and the window is real. The school has to timetable the student into a Standard Level set that may be full, and the IB registration has to be amended, so the decision belongs with the Diploma coordinator and should be raised early rather than once the mocks have confirmed what everyone suspected. A tutor's useful contribution is the evidence: a marked script annotated to show which losses were Higher Level-only, which is a twenty-minute job and genuinely helps the meeting.

The outcome is sometimes the opposite of what the family expected. Where the lost marks are concentrated in presentation habits and unstated principles rather than in Higher Level content, stepping down removes the hardest material and leaves the actual problem untouched, and the grade does not improve as much as anyone hoped. That is worth knowing before the registration is changed, and it is exactly the kind of finding a marked script delivers and a conversation does not.

09

ADEK, the school's data and the questions that get real answers

  • ADEK licenses and inspects Abu Dhabi private schools and publishes ratings
  • An inspection band says nothing about one Standard Level Physics set
  • Ask for set comparison, deadlines, and the basis of the prediction
  • The MoHRE private tuition permit is free of charge and valid for two years

Abu Dhabi private schools are licensed and inspected by the Department of Education and Knowledge, and the u.ae government portal describes ADEK as supervising the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate. ADEK publishes its own inspection outcomes, which is where a school's rating should be read rather than from a third-party summary. An inspection band tells you nothing about one Standard Level Physics set, which is where your child's marks are actually produced.

The school holds the comparative information that makes everything else interpretable: how your child's marks sit against the set, which questions the whole set lost, whether a theme was taught thinly because of timetable pressure, when the experimental hours and the investigation deadlines fall, and what a predicted grade will rest on. Ask for those five things specifically. General questions about progress get general answers; specific questions get a diagnosis, and the school is not withholding anything, it is simply waiting to be asked.

One route to rule out before planning. Press reporting on ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff says paid private tutoring of students enrolled at the teacher's own school is prohibited, and that staff tutoring outside school hours must hold the MoHRE private tuition work permit, whose code of conduct bars serving students affiliated with their own school. Verify the current wording on ADEK's own policy page. Either way, your child's teacher is a source of evidence rather than a tutoring option.

For whoever you do hire, the regulatory position is checkable in a sentence. Private tuition work permits were introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, administered by MoHRE and granted free of charge for two years, with eligibility covering registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and students aged 15 to 18. Tutoring without one attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule is published. IB Gram holds no regulator or board accreditation and claims none.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Abu Dhabi

District does not change which Standard Level Physics specialist is available over video. It does change the school, the report format, and when a timed paper can realistically be sat with a clear head.

Khalifa City

Villa communities feeding Al Yasmina Academy and GEMS American Academy Abu Dhabi, where reports often arrive as gradebook percentages. Those hide per-question detail entirely, so the marked script matters more here than the report does.

Al Raha Beach and Al Raha Gardens

Raha International School runs the full IB continuum nearby, so students carry years of criterion comments. A processing-and-evaluating criterion that has been weak since MYP 4 is a pattern worth acting on rather than a bad term.

Al Bateen and Al Khalidiyah

Short commutes and several established schools, giving the most workable weekday evening slots in the city. These families can sit a timed section on a weeknight and review it the following day while the reasoning is still fresh.

Al Reem Island

Repton School Abu Dhabi and a tower population whose evenings are decided by bridge traffic. Full-length papers get sat at the weekend here, with weekdays kept for going through what the marking showed.

Saadiyat Island

Cranleigh Abu Dhabi and families on short postings. Where a student has changed school mid-course, a timed paper in week one is a better baseline than the previous school's reporting, because the scales do not translate.

Al Reef and Al Samha

Outer communities where a long school bus journey leaves a student tired by five. Evidence improves markedly when the timed work moves to Saturday morning, because a paper sat exhausted measures fatigue rather than physics.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City and Shakhbout City

Mainland districts with long commutes to the island schools, so weekday sessions rarely start before 5.30pm. The practical rhythm is a weekend paper and a midweek hour on the marking.

Yas Island and West Yas

Newer schools with small Diploma cohorts and small Physics sets, which means fewer internal data points. Externally marked past papers carry more of the evidence here than school assessments can.

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Abu Dhabi

Island and Saadiyat schools

Abu Dhabi's established schools and newer Saadiyat campuses, running IB, British and American programmes side by side. Report formats differ sharply, which is why comparing marked scripts rather than grades is the only sound comparison across them.

Khalifa City, Al Raha and Yas schools

Most of Abu Dhabi's newer international capacity. Raha International School runs the Primary Years, Middle Years and Diploma programmes, so its students carry a long criterion history; neighbouring schools on British or American routes report in different units again.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Gather the free evidence first

A marked paper with per-question marks, a recent data table, the investigation draft with the school's comments, and the term's internal deadlines. Twenty minutes of asking changes the diagnosis often enough to be worth doing before any money is spent.

  2. 02

Take the free first lesson as a baseline

The tutor reads the marked work, asks your child what a gradient means and which principle they would write first, and sends a written note naming the leaking component and the single error to be tracked. That note is the baseline everything afterwards is measured against.

  3. 03

Agree the review points before paying

Week four for units and stated principles appearing, week eight for a second timed paper on the same scale, week twelve for a continue, change or stop decision. One sentence at the start, and the month-three conversation never needs to happen.

  4. 04

Run the cycle and mark everything

Work set at the end of every session, attempted independently, marked against the published scheme before the next, and the session spent on what the marking showed. Practice that is set and never marked gives repetition without feedback, which is the slowest route to any improvement.

  5. 05

Decide on the evidence, not the feeling

Two comparable papers and a tracked error count answer the question. If the marks have moved, continue and consider easing off. If they have not, change the diagnosis, the format or the tutor rather than adding hours to something already not working.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Both halves of the first paper are tracked apart

The multiple-choice and data-based sections reward opposite habits, and a combined mark hides which one is weak. We mark and report them separately, which is how a timing problem stops being mistaken for a knowledge problem.

Every session leaves a written trace

Two lines after each lesson: what was covered, what was set, and the one error being tracked. It takes a minute to write and it is the difference between a family who can check what they are buying and a family who is hoping for the best.

We say what the school owns

The experimental programme, the internal deadlines, the predicted grade and the set comparison all belong to the school, and no tutor substitutes for them. Telling you which door to knock on is part of the job, not a deflection from it.

Nothing in an investigation originates with us

Tutors explain criteria, teach the physics and the analysis, read drafts and set revisions the student carries out. No part of a submitted report is produced by a tutor. The dated feedback trail is useful evidence that the work is genuinely the candidate's own.

No grade is promised, and the reason is stated

Boundaries are set per session after marking and are not published in advance, so a specific final grade quoted in advance is invented. What is committed to is the process and the evidence, which is the part anybody can actually be held to.

Delivery and limits are both disclosed

Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not visit UAE addresses; home visits are a service we run only in India. If no Standard Level Physics specialist is free at the hours you need, we say so at the enquiry rather than later.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

What evidence should we have after a month of Standard Level Physics sessions?+

Four things. A written baseline from the first lesson naming the weak component and one error to track. Three or four pieces of set work, marked against the published scheme rather than given a percentage. A short note after each session saying what was covered and which error is being tracked. And a date for the next timed paper. You should not expect the overall paper mark to have moved yet; that typically arrives a mock later. What you should see is fewer answers missing units and a principle appearing on more extended questions.

His mock mark went up but the predicted grade did not change. Why not?+

Because the two are different instruments. Grade boundaries are set per session by the IB after marking, they move between sessions and they are not published in advance, so a real gain can sit inside one band. A prediction is separately the school's professional judgement based on all the evidence it holds, not on one mock. Ask the teacher what your son would need to demonstrate, in the school's own assessments, for the prediction to move. That question gets a specific answer; asking for the prediction to be raised does not.

How do we tell a content gap from a technique problem on a Physics script?+

By the shape of the losses. Marks lost thinly across almost every question, one or two at a time, are a technique or presentation problem: missing units, values quoted to a calculator's full display, no principle stated before the algebra. Marks lost in a concentrated block, where a cluster of questions scores nothing at all, are a content gap in a theme. The two need opposite remedies, and a percentage hides which one you have. Ask for the script with per-question marks rather than the summary figure.

Our report says she needs to apply knowledge to unfamiliar contexts. What does that mean in Physics?+

Usually that she has learned question types rather than principles, so a familiar question works and a rephrased one does not. The test for it takes two minutes: ask a prediction question with no numbers in it, such as what happens to the force if the separation doubles. A student who reasons from the relationship is fine. A student who reaches for a formula sheet is pattern-matching, which holds up through early mechanics and collapses in Theme D fields. That is a representation problem and it responds to two or three deliberate sessions rather than to more practice.

What does Standard Level Physics leave out that Higher Level includes?+

Whole subtopics and extensions. The subtopics are rigid body mechanics and Galilean and special relativity in Theme A, thermodynamics in Theme B, induction in Theme D and quantum physics in Theme E. The extensions sit inside shared subtopics such as simple harmonic motion, the gravitational and electric field material, and the radioactive decay law. This matters practically: a Standard Level student revising induction is revising material they will not be examined on, and one given Higher Level practice papers produces scores that mean nothing.

How many drafts should the investigation go through, and what should each one change?+

Four or five passes, each targeting one criterion in dependency order. First, before any data exists, settle the research question and the variables so the method can actually produce enough data over a wide enough range. Then processing and uncertainty propagation. Then the conclusion, compared against accepted physics with the source identified. Then evaluation, with specific quantified weaknesses rather than remarks about human error. A final pass cuts the method to fit the 3,000-word ceiling. A draft that is being retyped rather than restructured is not a pass.

My son's practical work is good but his papers are not. How is that possible?+

Easily, because they test different things. Competent bench work means he can follow a method and take readings carefully. The data-based section of the first paper asks what a gradient means physically, whether a difference between two results is meaningful given the uncertainties, and what is wrong with somebody else's method. Those are interpretive skills, and they are trained on paper rather than at a bench. The useful consequence is that this gap is one of the most improvable things in the course and it lifts the investigation marks at the same time.

Should a tutor be looking at our child's school laboratory record?+

At the data, yes; at the record as a document, no. What helps is a photograph of a recent results table, because it shows whether the student records readings with units, repeats, and sensible precision, which is exactly what the investigation's data analysis criterion rewards. What a tutor should not be doing is working inside the school's assessed practical material or anything the school is supervising. The division is simple: the school owns the experimental programme and the supervision; a tutor helps with design thinking, processing and the written argument.

Is in-home Standard Level Physics tuition available in Abu Dhabi from IB Gram?+

No. We do not send a tutor to any UAE address, and home visits in Abu Dhabi are not a service we sell; that exists only in India. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time with the same tutor each week. For the evidence question this is an advantage rather than a compromise: work set in a session is marked between sessions and returned in writing, so what you hold is a dated record of marked scripts and tracked errors instead of a verbal summary at the door.

Should we move our daughter from Higher Level to Standard Level Physics, and what should decide it?+

Evidence, and the most useful piece is a marked script annotated to separate losses on Higher Level-only content from losses on shared material. If most of the damage is in rigid body mechanics, thermodynamics, induction or quantum physics, stepping down genuinely removes it. If the damage is missing units, unstated principles and unpropagated uncertainty, those habits follow her down and the grade will not move as much as hoped. The decision belongs with the Diploma coordinator, because the school must have a set with space and the registration must be amended.

How often should a timed Physics paper be sat, and which section?+

Fortnightly once the relevant themes are taught, and start with the data-based section because it is short, quick to mark and the most trainable component in the course. Full extended-response papers are worth sitting monthly, under conditions with the phone in another room, with completion time logged next to the mark. Families in outer districts usually do the longer papers on a Saturday morning, because a paper sat at seven in the evening after a bus from the island measures tiredness rather than physics.

What should a written note after a science session actually contain?+

Two or three lines. What was covered, what has been set to do before the next session, and the single error currently being tracked, named the same way each week so it can be counted rather than described. Over six weeks those notes become the clearest record of whether anything is changing. Anything longer turns into a narrative, which reads well and proves nothing. If notes are not arriving, ask for them explicitly; a reluctance to put anything in writing is itself informative.

Can a tutor tell us what Physics grade our child will finish with?+

No, and an honest one will explain why rather than hedge. Grade boundaries are set per session after the papers are marked and are not published beforehand, so any specific final grade offered in advance is invented. What a tutor can legitimately tell you is which component is losing marks, how many of those marks are recoverable from habits as against content, and roughly how long that normally takes. Predictions for university applications belong to the school and rest on its own assessment evidence.

Who at the school should we ask, and what exactly should we ask them?+

The Physics teacher first, and the Diploma coordinator if the issue is load or level. Five specific requests get real answers: the marked script with per-question marks, which questions the whole set found hardest, when the experimental hours and investigation deadlines fall, whether any theme was covered at speed because of timetable pressure, and what your child must demonstrate for a predicted grade to move. 'How is she doing' produces a sentence about effort. Those five produce a plan, and they cost nothing.

How late is too late to start Standard Level Physics support?+

It depends on what the marked script shows, which is why the first lesson is a diagnosis rather than a sale. If the content is broadly covered and the marks are going on units, unstated principles and the data-based section, then even six to eight weeks changes the picture, because those are habits and habits move quickly. If two themes were never properly taught, no short block delivers them and we will say so. An honest no at that point saves a family more than a block of hours aimed at an unreachable target.

What does Standard Level Physics support cost in the Abu Dhabi market?+

Published UAE bands put qualified online subject tutoring at roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour and IB, IGCSE and A-Level specialists at AED 200 to 450, with TutorChase publishing AED 270, while in-home one-to-one work runs about AED 180 to 350 and reaches around 500 at the specialist end. Standard Level Physics generally sits in the middle of the specialist band, below Higher Level. Those figures belong to the sources named rather than to IB Gram, and the first lesson is free precisely so a plan can be priced after a diagnosis instead of before one.

Collect the evidence, then decide what to buy

Standard Level Physics is an unusually easy subject to check, because almost everything in it produces something markable. Ask the school for the script with per-question marks, a recent data table, the investigation draft with its comments, and the term's internal deadlines. Send those to us with the level and the theme you think is the problem, and the free first lesson comes back as a written baseline naming the leaking component and the one error to track. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, work is marked against the published schemes between sessions, and at the agreed review we will tell you plainly whether the evidence says continue, change or stop.
