IB DP Math AI HL Home Tutor in Abu Dhabi

An IB DP math AI HL home tutor in Abu Dhabi is most often wanted by a family who was told Applications would be the lighter route and has just read a Higher Level mock score. It is not the lighter route. It is a different 240-hour course built on matrices, graph theory, statistical testing and modelling, and it is examined with a calculator in every paper. IB Gram matches your child to a specialist in this course and level, one-to-one over live video.

  • Matched to Applications and Interpretation HL, not to maths generally
  • Graph theory, matrices and statistical testing taught, not skipped
  • Calculator technique treated as an examined skill in its own right
  • Tutors feed back on the student's own exploration; nothing is ghost-produced

IB & IGCSE in Abu Dhabi

The course families underestimate, and what that costs by DP2

Applications and Interpretation at Higher Level has a reputation problem in Abu Dhabi, and it costs students marks. It is routinely described as the softer of the two Diploma mathematics routes, chosen by families whose child found algebraic proof uncomfortable, and the first Higher Level mock usually ends that conversation. The course runs to the same 240 teaching hours as Analysis and Approaches HL. It has the same number of papers, including the one-hour Paper 3 at 20 per cent. What it swaps is the content, not the demand.

The swap is substantial. Instead of proof by induction and integration by parts, a Higher Level Applications student meets matrix algebra with determinants, inverses, eigenvalues and eigenvectors; transition matrices and steady states; graph theory with adjacency matrices, minimum spanning trees by Kruskal's and Prim's algorithms, the Chinese postman problem and travelling-salesman bounds; complex numbers used as phasors in alternating-current work; the Poisson distribution, confidence intervals, t-tests, chi-squared tests and Spearman's rank; and coupled differential equations solved numerically with Euler's method and read off phase portraits. None of that is easier than calculus. Much of it is simply unfamiliar to parents, which is why it arrives as a surprise.

The second thing families underestimate is where the marks actually sit. Statistics and probability is the largest block in the Higher Level course at roughly 52 published hours, and statistics in this course is not about computing a value. The calculator computes the value. The marks are in the sentence afterwards: what the p-value licenses you to say, in the context of the data, with the right degree of hedging. Abu Dhabi students who are strong arithmetically and weak at writing are the ones this course punishes hardest, and it punishes them quietly, two marks at a time, across a whole paper.

Delivery here is online, and the page should say so before it says anything else about tutoring. IB Gram does not send a tutor to a UAE address: home visits in Abu Dhabi are not part of what we sell, and that service exists only in India. For this course the constraint barely binds, because the limiting factor is not distance but supply. The number of tutors in any one city who are genuinely comfortable teaching eigenvalues, Chinese postman and a paired t-test is small, and it is smaller again among those willing to drive to Al Shamkha at five o'clock. Online, your child is matched from everyone who teaches the course.

What follows is the course itself. The two Higher Level routes side by side, so a family can see what was actually chosen. The published hours by topic area and exactly which content is Higher Level only. The three papers, their weightings and the technology assumption behind all of them. The places Applications candidates leak marks, which are interpretive far more often than computational. The graphic display calculator as an examined instrument. The five statistical tests and the sentence each one needs. Where this route is named in university entry requirements, and how to verify that rather than trust it. And how to check that whoever you hire is legally permitted to tutor in the UAE at all.

At a glance

  • 240 teaching hours, the same as Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level

  • All three papers assume a graphic display calculator throughout
  • Marks are lost on interpretation far more often than on calculation
  • Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

The route decision is made inside a programme, usually before any Diploma marking has happened. These are the programmes behind an Applications and Interpretation enquiry in Abu Dhabi and what each one changes.

DPAges 16-19 · DP1 and DP2

Diploma Programme

Six subjects with three normally at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS. Applications and Interpretation HL carries 240 teaching hours, three examination papers and a 20-mark exploration. It is designed for students who will use mathematics as a tool in another discipline, which is a statement about content rather than about difficulty.

Not every Abu Dhabi school runs Applications at Higher Level. Where a school has one mathematics teacher covering Higher Level across both routes, it will usually timetable Analysis at Higher Level and Applications at Standard Level, so a student who wants this course at Higher Level may be in a set of two or three, or taking it partly independently. That is the single most common reason Applications HL students in this emirate ask for one-to-one support.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

Middle Years Programme

Eight subject groups assessed against four criteria each on a 1-8 scale. MYP mathematics in its extended form is the usual predictor for either Higher Level route, and the criterion on applying mathematics in real-life contexts maps directly onto what Applications and Interpretation asks for two years later.

The option form for DP1 in Abu Dhabi often arrives before MYP 5 results do, so the route is chosen on a recommendation. The question worth asking the coordinator is not which course is harder but which Higher Level sets the school will actually timetable, because that frequently decides the matter regardless of what the family prefers.

CPAges 16-19

Career-related Programme

Two or more Diploma courses taken with a career-related study, a reflective project and a personal and professional skills course. Applications and Interpretation sits naturally here, since the whole course is built around using mathematics inside another field, and a student takes the same papers as a full Diploma candidate.

Abu Dhabi families usually reach this programme through a conversation about load rather than about mathematics. If a student is carrying Higher Level Applications well and three other Higher Levels badly, the discussion belongs with the Diploma coordinator before any tutoring plan is priced.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Applications and Interpretation is chosen because of what comes after it. These are the Diploma subjects Abu Dhabi students most often pair with it, described by the specific mathematics each one borrows from this course.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL

Matrices and eigenvalues, graph theory, statistical inference, modelling and numerical calculus across 240 hours, with three papers and an exploration. Marks leak on conclusions written without context, on hypothesis tests reported as decisions rather than as inferences, and on models fitted without any justification for the choice.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

SL

The same five topic areas over 150 hours, two 90-minute papers at 40 per cent each and no Paper 3. Voronoi diagrams, financial mathematics, regression and chi-squared testing all appear here, which is why a Standard Level student moving up to Higher Level has more foundation than they expect.

Business Management

HL and SL

Investment appraisal, break-even analysis and ratio work all lean on the modelling habits this course teaches. Higher Level Applications students usually find the calculation trivial and the written justification harder, which is exactly the balance of marks in both subjects.

Economics

HL and SL

Elasticity, market outcomes and the quantitative Higher Level paper reward the interpretation skills Applications builds. The overlap is real: a student who can write what a coefficient means in context is being trained for both subjects at once.

Psychology

HL and SL

Statistical literacy in the internal assessment, where a student must choose and justify an inferential test and report a result honestly. Applications HL candidates arrive with the vocabulary for this, including significance, sampling and the limits of what a test establishes.

Biology

HL and SL

The scientific investigation asks for data analysis and uncertainty handling, and chi-squared and correlation work recur throughout the course. Students taking Biology with Applications HL should be the strongest in their class at this, and frequently are not, because nobody connects the two.

Geography

HL and SL

Spatial reasoning, nearest-neighbour thinking and the use of maps and networks connect directly to Voronoi diagrams and graph theory. The internal assessment rewards a student who can analyse rather than describe, which is the same demand as this mathematics course.

Computer Science

HL and SL

Adjacency matrices, graph traversal and algorithmic complexity are shared ground with the Higher Level graph theory content. A student taking both has a genuine advantage, provided somebody points out that the two courses are describing the same objects.

Design Technology

HL and SL

Modelling, tolerance and data-driven iteration. The mathematics is lighter than in the sciences, but the habit of justifying a model rather than presenting it is identical, and it is the habit this mathematics course is actually assessing.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

Applications HL students have unusually concrete material here: what a statistical test can and cannot establish, how a model relates to the world it describes, and whether a p-value is knowledge. A tutor can supply the examples; the essay must be the student's own.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats cover nearly every Higher Level Applications request from Abu Dhabi. All run one-to-one over live video, and they differ in what they are trying to install rather than in medium.

Weekly Higher Level hour

One fixed hour a week with the same tutor through DP1 and DP2, which is what a course with this much unfamiliar content needs. Matrices, graph theory and inference are taught, practised, marked and revisited on a cycle, and nothing gets quietly skipped because the school's small Higher Level set ran out of time.

  • Same tutor, same slot, same course across both Diploma years
  • Work set at the end of each session and marked before the next
  • A written note after each session naming the error being tracked
  • Scheduled in Gulf Standard Time around the Abu Dhabi school day

Statistics and inference block

A focused series on the largest topic block in the course: distributions, confidence intervals, chi-squared and t-tests, correlation and the written conclusions each one requires. Most Higher Level Applications grades move here first, because this is where the volume of marks is and where the interpretation marks are being dropped.

  • Each test practised on real data, not on textbook numbers
  • The conclusion sentence drilled until it is automatic
  • Calculator routes and written working taught together
  • Marked against published schemes, not against a percentage

Paper 3 investigation block

The one-hour paper of two long structured investigations, worth 20 per cent and sat only at Higher Level. It rewards following an unfamiliar development across several parts and recovering when an early step fails, which responds to timed practice far faster than to additional content teaching.

  • Timed conditions from the first session, not the last
  • Explicit coaching on what to do when part (c) collapses
  • One investigation type tracked across several past papers
  • Short, dated and finite, so the cost has an end point

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Abu Dhabi

01

The two Higher Level routes, side by side, as they are actually examined

A family searching for Higher Level Applications support in Abu Dhabi has usually already made the route choice, often on the understanding that it was the gentler option. The comparison below is the one that should have been available at the point of choosing. Both courses run to 240 teaching hours. Both have three papers and an internally assessed exploration worth 20 per cent. Both have a Paper 3 at one hour and 55 marks. The difference is what the papers contain and which skill they punish.

Analysis and Approaches builds on algebraic manipulation and proof, and its first paper is sat without a calculator. Applications and Interpretation builds on modelling, data and technology, and assumes a graphic display calculator in every paper. That single difference changes who finds each course hard. A student with weak algebra survives longer in Applications; a student who cannot write a conclusion in context does worse in Applications than they would have done in Analysis, because Applications asks for that sentence constantly.

In Abu Dhabi the choice is often made by the timetable rather than by the student. Where a school has limited Higher Level mathematics staffing, Analysis is usually the one offered at Higher Level and Applications at Standard Level. A student who wants Applications at Higher Level may therefore be in a set of two or three, or covering parts of the course with a textbook. That is a supply problem, not an ability problem, and it is the most common reason this page gets read.

Use the table as a decision record rather than a ranking. Neither course is the hard one. They test different things, they suit different students, and the mistake that costs the most is choosing on reputation rather than on what the student is actually good at and what the next step after school requires.

Where the 240 hours go, and what exists only at Higher Level

The subject guide allocates 150 teaching hours to Applications and Interpretation at Standard Level and 240 at Higher Level, with roughly thirty hours in both for the toolkit and the exploration. Unlike Analysis, the growth is not concentrated in calculus. Geometry and trigonometry more than doubles, largely because graph theory and vectors land there, and statistics and probability becomes the largest single block in the course.

That distribution tells you where a Higher Level Applications student is most likely to be in trouble. A student struggling with statistics is struggling with the biggest block; a student struggling with graph theory is struggling with content that has no Standard Level ancestor at all and that most parents have never seen. Minimum spanning trees, the Chinese postman problem and travelling-salesman bounds are taught nowhere else in a school mathematics curriculum, so there is no fallback intuition to lean on.

The matrix work is the other genuine cliff. Operations and determinants are approachable; eigenvalues and eigenvectors, matrix powers used to find a steady state in a transition matrix, and then coupled differential equations solved through those same eigenvalues form a chain where a weakness in the first link breaks the last three. When a Higher Level Applications student says they do not understand phase portraits, the problem is almost always three topics upstream.

Confirm every hour allocation and topic list against your child's own copy of the current subject guide, which the school issues and the IB revises periodically. What is stable enough to plan around is the shape: a statistics-heavy Higher Level course with two large bodies of unfamiliar discrete content, numerical rather than analytic calculus, and technology assumed throughout.

Three papers, and the technology assumption behind all of them

  • Paper 1: 2 hours, 110 marks, 30 per cent, shorter compulsory questions
  • Paper 2: 2 hours, 110 marks, 30 per cent, extended response in context
  • Paper 3: 1 hour, 55 marks, 20 per cent, two compulsory investigations
  • A graphic display calculator is assumed in every paper, not permitted as a helper

Higher Level Applications is assessed by three papers plus the exploration. Paper 1 runs two hours over 110 marks at 30 per cent and is made of shorter compulsory questions covering the whole syllabus. Paper 2 is also two hours and 110 marks at 30 per cent, built from longer extended-response questions that develop a context across several parts. Paper 3 is one hour, 55 marks, 20 per cent, and consists of two compulsory extended problem-solving investigations. The exploration carries the remaining 20 per cent across 20 marks.

The feature that distinguishes this course from its sibling is that a graphic display calculator is assumed in all three papers. That is not a convenience, it is an examined expectation. Questions are written on the understanding that the student can run a regression, obtain a test statistic and a p-value, invert a matrix, find eigenvalues and apply Euler's method on the machine. A student who is slow or uncertain on the calculator is not merely inconvenienced; they are working on a paper designed for someone who is fast on it.

This produces a very specific examination profile. The arithmetic is rarely the obstacle. The obstacles are selecting the right procedure, carrying out the right number of steps on the device, and then writing what the output means. Candidates who have practised only by hand lose time; candidates who have practised only on the device lose the written marks. Both errors are correctable and both need deliberate attention rather than more topic teaching.

Paper 3 deserves separate planning. Two long investigations in sixty minutes is a stamina and structure test, and in this course the investigations usually develop a model or a discrete structure across six or seven parts. Abu Dhabi students most often report either spending thirty-five minutes on the first investigation or abandoning the second when an early part fails. Both patterns respond to timed practice against the published scheme, and neither improves by itself.

Where Applications candidates lose marks: interpretation, not calculation

  • A correct statistic with no contextual sentence is the single biggest leak
  • Hypothesis tests reported as verdicts rather than as inferences
  • Models fitted because the calculator offered them, with no justification
  • Eigenvalue and graph theory failures usually originate two topics upstream

The dominant leak in this course is a correct number with nothing said about it. A student runs the regression, reports r equals 0.87, and stops. The mark scheme wanted a statement about the strength and direction of the association between the two named variables in the context given, and possibly a caution about causation. The arithmetic was never the test. This single pattern, repeated across a paper, is the difference between a 4 and a 6 for a large number of Higher Level Applications candidates.

The second leak is the hypothesis test reported as a verdict. A p-value of 0.03 does not mean the claim is true; it means there is sufficient evidence at the 5 per cent significance level to reject the null hypothesis in favour of the alternative, in the context of this sample. Candidates write 'so the two are related', and lose the mark they had already earned on the calculator. This is a sentence-level fix and it is one of the fastest improvements available in the whole Diploma.

Third is the model presented without justification. Applications asks students to choose a model and defend the choice: why a logistic rather than an exponential, what the parameters mean in context, where the model stops being reasonable. A student who fits a curve because the calculator offered it has done the computation and skipped the subject. The same habit sinks explorations, where the marks for reflection are explicitly about limitations.

After those come the predictable content failures: eigenvalue work attempted without secure matrix algebra underneath it; graph theory algorithms half-remembered, so a minimum spanning tree is built greedily but not systematically; Euler's method applied with the wrong step handling; and units and degrees of freedom lost in statistical tests. Every one of these is visible on a marked script, which is why the first session asks for the script rather than for a description.

05

The calculator as an examined instrument

  • Seven regression families, with the coefficient of determination, fluently
  • Matrices to eigenvalues, including powers for transition matrices
  • Chi-squared, one-sample, two-sample and paired t-tests with p-values
  • Four written lines per calculator answer: method, entry, statistic, conclusion

In a course where every paper assumes a graphic display calculator, fluency on the device is part of the syllabus in practice even where it is not a topic in the guide. Higher Level Applications students need to be quick and accurate at a specific list of operations, and most of them have assembled that list by accident. Making it explicit is one of the easiest gains in the course, and it takes a session or two rather than a term.

The list is short and concrete. Linear, quadratic, exponential, logarithmic, power, sinusoidal and logistic regression, with the coefficient of determination. Solving equations and systems numerically. Matrix entry, multiplication, powers, determinants, inverses and eigenvalues. Statistical tests: chi-squared for independence and goodness of fit, one-sample and two-sample and paired t-tests, with p-values and degrees of freedom read correctly. Distributions: binomial, Poisson and normal, forwards and inverse. Numerical integration and derivatives at a point. Graphing with intersections, maxima and sign changes located rather than estimated.

Alongside the operations sits the discipline of what to write. A calculator answer with no supporting line forfeits method marks even when the value is right. A well-trained candidate records the test or model used, the values entered, the statistic obtained and the conclusion in context, which is four short lines and usually most of the available credit. Students pick this habit up fastest when a tutor marks their script against the published scheme and shows them the marks they left on the table.

There is one further practical point. Students should be examined on the machine they have practised on, with its operating system settled and its memory in the state the regulations require, and that is a matter for the school's Diploma coordinator rather than for a tutor. A borrowed calculator in an examination hall is a self-inflicted problem, and it is more common than it should be.

06

Five statistical tests, and the sentence each one needs

Statistics and probability is the biggest block in this course, and most of its marks are won or lost in one sentence per question. Students know how to produce the statistic. What they have usually never been taught explicitly is the form of words the mark scheme rewards, which varies by test and which is entirely learnable. Teaching it is unglamorous and it moves grades.

The structure is always the same. Name the test and the significance level. State the hypotheses in the context of the data rather than in symbols alone. Report the statistic and the p-value. Then write a conclusion that says what the evidence licenses, in the context given, and nothing stronger. A candidate who does that consistently collects marks on questions they find difficult, because the final mark is for the reasoning, not the result.

The table sets out the five tests a Higher Level Applications candidate most often meets, what each is used for, what the calculator gives, and the shape of the sentence that earns the mark. It is deliberately a reference rather than a lesson: the point is that a student should be able to produce the right form of words without thinking, in the way they can produce a quadratic formula.

One caution worth stating. These tests establish association and evidence, not cause and not truth. The mark schemes care about that distinction and so do examiners, and a candidate who writes 'this proves' has usually just thrown away a mark they earned. In the exploration the same restraint earns reflection marks, which is why the statistics block and the exploration should be taught with one voice rather than as separate things.

Where this route is named in university entry, and how to check

  • Applications HL is widely accepted; some programmes still specify Analysis
  • Check each programme's own page for the student's actual intake year
  • British-track equivalency: five IGCSE subjects at E or 3, excluding Arabic and Islamic education
  • No IB points threshold for equivalency is published here, because none has been verified

The anxious question behind a great many Applications enquiries in Abu Dhabi is whether this route closes a door. The honest answer has two parts. Applications and Interpretation at Higher Level is accepted for a very wide range of degree programmes, including many quantitative ones, and it is explicitly designed for students who will use mathematics inside another discipline. At the same time, some mathematics, physics and engineering programmes still specify Analysis and Approaches, usually at Higher Level, and a few specify it without naming an alternative.

The only reliable method is to read each programme's own admissions page, for the intake year the student will actually apply in, and to write down what it says. Requirements change, they differ between faculties inside one university, and they differ between campuses of the same institution. A tutoring page listing which universities accept which route would be out of date within a year, and several competitor pages carry exactly that kind of stale list. Ask the school's university counsellor to confirm in writing, because that is their job and they have the current information.

For UAE equivalency, be careful about what is published and what is not. The British-track rules are sourced: students must show five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at no less than grade E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education not counted among the five, plus one accredited Advanced Level subject at no less than E, or two Advanced Subsidiary subjects at the same grade. For the American track, English proficiency requires an IELTS academic score of 5, TOEFL iBT 61 or 450 in the SAT reading and writing section, and mathematics requires at least 450 in the SAT Math test.

No comparable IB points figure should be taken from any tutoring page, including this one. We have not read a verified IB equivalency threshold on the Ministry of Education's own site, so we do not publish one, and a competing page that publishes the wrong subject count for the British track is a useful reminder of why. Read the current requirements on moe.gov.ae or ask the emirate's attestation authority, and treat equivalency as a process the family completes rather than something a tutor performs or can speed up.

08

The exploration in Applications: real data and the modelling trap

  • Criteria: presentation 4, communication 4, engagement 3, reflection 3, mathematics 6
  • Choosing the best coefficient of determination is not an investigation
  • Justification and stated limitations are where the reachable marks are
  • The first session, before data collection, is worth more than three at the end

The exploration is 20 marks and 20 per cent, marked across five criterion letters: presentation and mathematical communication at four marks each, personal engagement and reflection at three each, and use of mathematics at six. In Applications it almost always involves data, and that is where the trap sits. A student collects or finds a dataset, runs several regressions, picks the one with the best coefficient of determination, and writes it up. That is computation presented as investigation, and it scores poorly on exactly the criteria that carry most of the marks.

What earns marks instead is justification and limitation. Why this model rather than that one, given what the context implies about growth or saturation or periodicity. What the parameters mean in the units of the problem. Where the model stops being reasonable, and what would need to be true for it to hold. A student who writes two honest paragraphs about the limits of their own model is collecting reflection marks that a far more elaborate calculation would not have earned.

The highest-value tutoring session on the exploration is therefore the first one, before any data is gathered, while the research question can still be narrowed. A question like 'how does temperature affect energy use' produces a graph. A question about whether a logistic model describes a specific measured quantity over a specific period, with a stated reason for expecting saturation, produces an investigation. The difference is twenty minutes of conversation at the right moment.

The boundary is firm. A tutor explains what each criterion asks, teaches the mathematics the student has chosen to use, reads a draft and identifies where marks are being lost, and sets the next revision for the student to carry out. No part of the submitted document originates with a tutor, and none of it is rewritten into final form by one. Keep the written feedback: it is the clearest available evidence that the work is the student's own, and schools increasingly ask to see that trail.

09

Checking that whoever you hire is permitted to tutor in the UAE

Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated, and a family hiring for a narrow specialism is the family most likely to be offered an informal arrangement. The position is clear enough to check. Private tuition work permits were introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, administered by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation. The permit is granted free of charge for two years, and MoHRE's own service page for it is listed as private tutor licensing, applied for through the ministry's smart app, website and e-services system with a two-working-day completion time.

Eligibility is wider than parents assume. Teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged 15 to 18 can all apply. That breadth matters for two reasons: it means a university student offering cheap Higher Level Applications support may be perfectly legitimate, and it means there is no excuse for a professional tutor not to hold one. Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule has been published, so disregard any specific amount quoted as fact.

There are two limits worth knowing. A tutoring operation with premises and staff in Dubai is a different legal animal from an individual tutor and needs a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute, with initial approval first and annual renewal. And in Abu Dhabi, press reporting on ADEK's professional-ethics rules says school staff are prohibited from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, with the permit's own code of conduct barring the same thing. Verify that against ADEK's current policy document before relying on it.

IB Gram holds no regulator or board accreditation and claims none. We are not approved, endorsed or licensed by ADEK, KHDA, the Ministry of Education, the IB or any examination board, and any tutoring company telling you otherwise should be asked to produce the permit or centre number. What we do is match your child to a specialist in Applications and Interpretation at Higher Level and deliver the lessons one-to-one over live video. We do not send a tutor to a UAE address, and home visits in Abu Dhabi are not something we sell; that service exists only in India.

Areas we cover across Abu Dhabi

Higher Level Applications sets are small across the emirate, so availability rather than distance is what shapes support. These notes cover what the geography of Abu Dhabi does to a session time and which school clusters each district feeds.

Khalifa City

Villa communities feeding Al Yasmina Academy and GEMS American Academy Abu Dhabi. Students coming from an American middle-school track often prefer this route and then meet matrix algebra, which no part of that earlier track prepared them for.

Al Raha Beach and Al Raha Gardens

Raha International School runs the full continuum close by, and students here have usually been criterion-marked for years. Requests from this corridor tend to be about Paper 3 investigations and statistical inference rather than basic technique.

Al Reem Island

Repton School Abu Dhabi and a tower population whose evenings are set by bridge traffic. Higher Level Applications sessions from this island commonly start at 6pm or later, which suits statistics work better than it suits new content.

Saadiyat Island

Cranleigh Abu Dhabi and a community on short postings. Students relocating mid-course frequently find the new school runs the other mathematics route at Higher Level, which turns a transfer into a genuine curriculum problem.

Al Bateen and Al Khalidiyah

Central island streets with short commutes and several established schools, including Al Bateen Academy and the American Community School of Abu Dhabi. A 4.30pm start is realistic here, which is useful when teaching graph theory from scratch.

Yas Island and West Yas

Small Diploma cohorts in newer schools. A Higher Level Applications candidate here may be one of two in the year group, covering some topics independently with a textbook and a syllabus list rather than in a taught set.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City and Shakhbout City

Mainland communities with long commutes to the island schools, where weekday sessions rarely start before 5.30pm. Weekend blocks work better for the Paper 3 investigations, which need an hour of uninterrupted concentration.

Masdar City and Al Falah

Khalifa University's campus and a growing family population with an engineering trajectory in mind. These are the families most likely to ask whether Applications rather than Analysis closes a door, which is a question to verify programme by programme.

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Abu Dhabi

Island and Saadiyat schools

Abu Dhabi's long-established schools and the newer Saadiyat campuses. Some run the Diploma, others A-Levels or an American diploma with Advanced Placement, and among the Diploma schools not all timetable Applications at Higher Level.

  • Cranleigh Abu Dhabi
  • The British School Al Khubairat
  • American Community School of Abu Dhabi
  • Repton School Abu Dhabi
  • Abu Dhabi International School

Khalifa City, Al Raha and Yas schools

Most of Abu Dhabi's newer international capacity sits in this corridor. Raha International School runs the Primary Years, Middle Years and Diploma programmes; neighbouring schools run British or American routes, so mathematics demand here spans three assessment systems at once.

  • Raha International School
  • Al Yasmina Academy
  • GEMS American Academy Abu Dhabi
  • West Yas Academy
  • Brighton College Abu Dhabi
  • Emirates National Schools

Schools are named only as context for where Abu Dhabi Diploma mathematics students study. No affiliation, endorsement or partnership with any named school or group is implied, and inspection outcomes should be read on ADEK's own published listings.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Name the course, the level and the topic block

'Applications and Interpretation HL, the statistics unit is the problem and Paper 3 came back at 19 out of 55' is the sentence that matters. Applications and Analysis are different specialisms, and a tutor fluent in one is not automatically fluent in the other. Send the marked script if you have it.

  2. 02

Take the free first lesson as a diagnosis

The tutor reads the marked work, watches your child attempt something timed on the calculator, and establishes whether the issue is procedure, device fluency or the written conclusion. You get a written note naming what is leaking, including the case where the honest answer is that the school should handle it.

  3. 03

Start where the marks are, not where the syllabus starts

In this course that usually means statistics and inference, because it is the largest block and the one where interpretation marks go missing. Graph theory and matrices get their own treatment, because they are unfamiliar content rather than weak technique and respond to teaching rather than to practice.

  4. 04

Fix the rhythm and set a review point

A weekly hour in Gulf Standard Time, work set and marked between sessions, and an agreed review four to six weeks out at which you look at per-question marks rather than at impressions. Agreeing the review date at the start is worth more than negotiating the rate.

  5. 05

Change the plan on the evidence

If the conclusions in the scripts have started carrying context and the marks have moved, continue. If they have not, change the diagnosis rather than adding hours. Sometimes the finding is that the mathematics is fine and a paired subject is the real problem, which is a useful answer in itself.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched to this course, not to mathematics in general

Applications and Analysis diverge sharply at Higher Level. Eigenvalues, Chinese postman and a paired t-test are not things an Analysis specialist teaches, and a family paying specialist rates should be getting a specialist in the course their child actually sits.

The interpretation marks get taught explicitly

Most Higher Level Applications grades move when the conclusion sentence becomes automatic: test named, hypotheses in context, statistic reported, inference stated without overclaiming. That is teachable in weeks and it is the largest single pool of recoverable marks in the course.

Delivery is stated plainly

Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not visit UAE addresses; home visits are a service we run only in India. For a specialism this narrow, matching on expertise rather than on driving distance is the whole point.

Nothing is produced for the student

Tutors explain criteria, teach the mathematics the student has chosen, read drafts and set revisions the student carries out. No part of a submitted exploration originates with a tutor. A competing site in this market sells completed Internal Assessments, and the malpractice consequence falls on the candidate.

University claims are verified, not listed

We will not publish a table of which universities accept which mathematics route, because it would be stale within a year. We tell you to read each programme's own admissions page for the student's intake year and to get the school's counsellor to confirm it in writing.

Regulatory facts carry their source

ADEK licenses Abu Dhabi private schools. The MoHRE private tuition permit is free of charge for two years under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, with no published fine schedule. IB Gram holds no regulator or board accreditation and claims none.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

Is Applications and Interpretation at Higher Level the easier of the two maths routes?+

No, and the first Higher Level mock usually settles the argument. Both courses carry 240 teaching hours, three papers and an exploration worth 20 per cent, and both include the one-hour Paper 3. What differs is content and the skill each one punishes. Applications swaps algebraic proof and integration techniques for matrices with eigenvalues, graph theory, inferential statistics and numerical calculus, and it assumes a calculator in every paper. A student with weak algebra survives longer here; a student who cannot write a conclusion in context does worse here than they would have done in Analysis.

What does Applications HL contain that Analysis HL never touches at all?+

A surprising amount. Matrix algebra through determinants, inverses, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, and matrix powers used to find the steady state of a transition matrix. Graph theory with adjacency matrices, minimum spanning trees built by Kruskal's and Prim's algorithms, the Chinese postman problem and travelling-salesman upper and lower bounds. Inferential statistics including the Poisson distribution, confidence intervals, one-sample, two-sample and paired t-tests, chi-squared tests and Spearman's rank. Coupled differential equations read through eigenvalues and phase portraits. Confirm current lists against your child's own copy of the subject guide, which the school issues.

Which calculator operations does my child actually need to be fluent with?+

A short and specific list. Linear, quadratic, exponential, logarithmic, power, sinusoidal and logistic regression with the coefficient of determination. Numerical equation and system solving. Matrix entry, multiplication, powers, determinants, inverses and eigenvalues. Chi-squared tests for independence and goodness of fit, and one-sample, two-sample and paired t-tests, reading p-values and degrees of freedom correctly. Binomial, Poisson and normal distributions forwards and inverse. Numerical integration and derivatives at a point. Graphing with intersections and maxima located rather than estimated. Most students have assembled this list by accident; making it explicit takes a session or two.

My daughter gets the right numbers and still loses marks. What is happening?+

She is almost certainly stopping at the value. This course awards the last mark for interpretation: what the statistic means for the two named variables in the context given, in units, without overclaiming. A regression coefficient reported as a number earns part of the credit; the same coefficient described as a strong positive association between the named quantities, with no claim of causation, earns the rest. It is a writing habit rather than a mathematical gap, and it is one of the fastest improvements available anywhere in the Diploma once somebody names it.

What is in Paper 3 for Applications, and how does it differ from the Analysis version?+

Paper 3 is one hour, 55 marks and 20 per cent, with two compulsory extended investigations, and it is sat only at Higher Level in both courses. In Applications the investigations typically develop a model or a discrete structure across six or seven parts, with the calculator assumed throughout, where the Analysis version develops an abstract mathematical idea. The skill is the same: read the early parts properly because the later ones depend on them, and recover rather than abandon when a step fails. Timed practice against the published mark scheme moves it faster than more content teaching does.

How are the chi-squared and t-tests examined, and what does the scheme want written?+

Always in the same structure, which is what makes it learnable. Name the test and the significance level. State the hypotheses in the context of the data rather than only in symbols. Report the statistic, the degrees of freedom where relevant, and the p-value. Then conclude with what the evidence licenses: at the stated level there is or is not sufficient evidence to reject the null hypothesis, phrased in terms of the named variables. Writing 'this proves' throws away a mark the student had already earned on the calculator, because these tests establish evidence rather than truth.

Do engineering programmes accept Applications HL, or do they insist on Analysis?+

It varies by programme, by faculty and by intake year, which is why a tutoring page should not publish a list. Applications and Interpretation at Higher Level is accepted for a very wide range of degrees, including many quantitative ones, but some mathematics, physics and engineering programmes still specify Analysis and Approaches and a few do so without naming an alternative. Read the admissions page of each programme your child is considering, for the year they will apply, and ask the school's university counsellor to confirm it in writing. Requirements change, and stale lists on tutoring sites are a known hazard.

Can my son move from Applications HL to Analysis HL once DP1 has started?+

Sometimes, and the window narrows quickly. Two things have to work: the school must have an Analysis set at Higher Level with space in the timetable, and the IB registration has to be amended. The mathematical gap is substantial in both directions, because the courses are not nested; he would be picking up induction, complex numbers in Euler form, vector geometry and integration techniques while dropping matrices, graph theory and inference. The decision belongs with the Diploma coordinator. A tutor's useful contribution is an honest estimate of how many weeks of bridging the move would need.

What separates a strong Applications exploration from a weak one?+

Justification. A weak exploration collects data, runs several regressions, keeps the one with the best coefficient of determination and writes it up. That is computation dressed as investigation, and it scores badly on the criteria carrying most of the marks: presentation, communication, engagement and reflection together are fourteen of the twenty. A strong one explains why a particular model suits the context, says what the parameters mean in the units of the problem, and states honestly where the model stops holding. The most valuable session happens before any data is gathered, while the research question can still be narrowed.

Is graph theory genuinely part of a school mathematics course?+

At Higher Level in this course, yes, and it catches families out because it appears nowhere else in a school curriculum. Students meet adjacency matrices and walks, minimum spanning trees built by Kruskal's and Prim's algorithms, the Chinese postman problem for traversing every edge, and upper and lower bounds for the travelling-salesman problem. There is no earlier intuition to fall back on, so it has to be taught rather than revised. The good news is that it is self-contained: a student can be behind in graph theory without that weakness contaminating anything else in the course.

Our Abu Dhabi school only timetables Applications at Standard Level. What are the options?+

Ask the Diploma coordinator three questions in order: will a Higher Level Applications set run at all next year, how many students would be in it, and what the school's arrangement is for a student taking a course partly independently. Where a school has limited Higher Level mathematics staffing, Analysis is usually the Higher Level offer and Applications the Standard Level one, so this is a staffing constraint rather than a judgement about your child. If the set will not run, the realistic choices are Analysis at Higher Level, Applications at Standard Level, or a supported independent route.

Will IB Gram arrange a tutor to come to a Khalifa City address for this course?+

No. IB Gram does not send a tutor to any UAE address, and home visits in Abu Dhabi are not a service we sell; that exists only in India. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time with the same tutor each week and work marked between sessions. For Higher Level Applications the trade is heavily in your favour: the number of people who can teach eigenvalues, Chinese postman and a paired t-test is small, and the number of them willing to drive to Khalifa City at five o'clock is smaller again.

How do I check that an Abu Dhabi tutor is legally allowed to teach privately?+

Ask to see the MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023. It is granted free of charge for two years, and MoHRE's own service page lists private tutor licensing with a two-working-day completion time through its smart app, website and e-services system. Because the permit costs nothing, a tutor charging a premium to cover licensing is charging for something free. Individuals tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule has been published, so treat any specific figure as unverified.

What does Higher Level Applications support cost in the Abu Dhabi market?+

Published UAE bands put qualified online subject tutoring at roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour and IB, IGCSE and A-Level specialists at AED 200 to 450, with TutorChase publishing AED 270 and in-home one-to-one visits running AED 180 to 350 and up to about 500 at the specialist end. Higher Level Applications sits at the upper part of the specialist band, because the pool of people who teach it confidently is narrow. Those figures belong to the sources named, not to IB Gram, and the first lesson is free so a plan can be priced after a diagnosis.

How long does it take to move a Higher Level Applications grade?+

It depends what is broken, and the three common cases have very different timescales. An interpretation habit, where the student computes correctly and writes nothing, changes in three or four marked scripts. A block of unfamiliar content such as graph theory or eigenvalue work needs teaching and then retesting, so four to six sessions with a fortnight's gap to check it held. A student who never secured the Standard Level statistics underneath the Higher Level course is a term's work, and we will say so rather than sell a block that cannot deliver.

Does the UAE equivalency process care which mathematics route my child took?+

We do not publish an answer to that, because we have not read a verified IB equivalency rule on the Ministry of Education's own site, and an unsourced number on a tutoring page is worse than no number. What is sourced is the British track: five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from the five, plus one Advanced Level subject at E or two Advanced Subsidiary subjects at the same grade. Read the current IB position on moe.gov.ae or ask the emirate's attestation authority directly.

Start with the statistics block and the script

For most Higher Level Applications students the fastest available improvement is not more content. It is the conclusion sentence, drilled until it is automatic, across the largest topic block in the course. The second fastest is calculator fluency made explicit instead of assembled by accident. Both are visible on a marked script, which is why the first lesson asks for one. Send us the course, the level and the most recent marked paper, with the exploration draft if there is one, and you will get a written note naming what is leaking and how long the realistic fix takes. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, and if no Higher Level Applications specialist is free at your hours, we will tell you at the enquiry rather than after you have paid.
