IB DP Chemistry SL Home Tutor in Abu Dhabi

An IB DP Chemistry SL home tutor in Abu Dhabi is usually hired for one reason: the student can follow the lesson and cannot produce the answer. This page is about the papers rather than about us. It sets out what each component tests, how the command terms are tariffed, which topics appear where, and what one session can realistically close. Teaching is delivered one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time slots, so no part of Abu Dhabi is further from a chemist than any other.

  • Sessions built on past-paper items, not on re-explained class notes
  • Command terms taught against the published markscheme wording
  • Investigation feedback given as questions on the student's own draft
  • A free 45-minute trial lesson first, no card details required

What Standard Level Chemistry actually asks of a student

Standard Level Chemistry is a 150-hour course examined through two written papers and one internal investigation. Paper 1 is worth 36 per cent and arrives in two halves that test different things: multiple-choice items, then a data-based section. Paper 2 is worth 44 per cent and is where structured and extended written answers live. The investigation accounts for the remaining 20 per cent, is marked by the school against published criteria, and is moderated externally on a sample. Almost every decision about where to spend paid hours follows from those three figures.

The course content is organised under two themes, structure and reactivity, with the Standard Level material forming the spine and Higher Level extensions layered on top for students taking the deeper option. That design has a consequence most Abu Dhabi families discover late: a topic is not finished when the class moves on from it, because the same ideas return in a different theme later. Bonding returns inside energetics. Moles return inside every calculation in the course. A gap left open in the first term is not a missing topic; it is a recurring tax on every paper afterwards.

What a Standard Level student struggles with is rarely the chemistry as a body of knowledge. It is the translation step. They know that a reaction releases heat and cannot write it as a sign convention. They understand that a rate depends on collisions and cannot deduce an order from a table of data. They can describe a titration and lose the marks because the question said justify. This is why re-explaining a topic, which is what most well-meaning support does, produces so little movement in a score.

This page is therefore structured around the examination rather than around the service. The sections below work through the components, the layout of the two themes, how the two halves of Paper 1 differ, what Paper 2 rewards, the command terms with their usual tariffs, a topic-to-paper map, the investigation criteria where Standard Level marks are commonly dropped, and the honest limits of what a single session can repair. Where market prices appear they are published bands with their source attributed, not a fee list.

Delivery is online, one-to-one, over live video, in Gulf Standard Time slots. For this subject that is a practical advantage rather than a compromise: Standard Level chemistry is written and calculated work, produced on a shared screen where the tutor can correct a sign convention or a significant figure as it is written and save the annotated page afterwards. Families in Abu Dhabi who began by searching for a home tutor usually find the scheduling is the part they value most, because a fixed evening slot survives traffic, fixtures and a late school bus.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Standard Level Chemistry sits inside a larger programme, and most of the difficulty a DP1 student meets in the first term comes from what they studied immediately before it.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three at Standard Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service. Chemistry at Standard Level satisfies the sciences requirement for students whose university route needs the subject recorded rather than mastered to depth. The assessment is two written papers and one scientific investigation, and the investigation weighting is identical to the Higher Level version even though the task is smaller.

In Abu Dhabi the Standard Level chemistry group is often the larger of the two in a school, which means it absorbs the students who are strongest and weakest in the subject at once. Teaching has to be pitched somewhere in the middle, and that is the gap one-to-one hours are usually bought to fill rather than any failing on the school's part.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

Middle Years Programme

Assessed against four science criteria that weight investigation design, data processing and evaluation heavily. A student can finish MYP 5 with high criterion scores and limited calculation fluency, because arithmetic accuracy under time is not what the criteria measure. The transition into Standard Level chemistry therefore rewards investigation skills immediately and exposes quantitative weakness within weeks.

Abu Dhabi has several IB continuum schools where students move from MYP into the Diploma in the same building, so nobody flags the change of emphasis. The first chemistry test of DP1 is usually where it surfaces. Four to six hours on moles, concentration and significant figures in the opening term is the cheapest intervention available in the whole two years.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge and Edexcel upper secondary

Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry 0620 and Edexcel 4CH1 both cover bonding, stoichiometry, acids, rates and organic families, assessed through shorter and more directive questions. Students arriving from either route know a great deal of chemistry and are rarely asked to construct an argument from data. Standard Level Paper 2 asks exactly that, which is why strong IGCSE grades do not reliably predict a strong first Diploma report.

The British-curriculum sector in Abu Dhabi is large, so many Standard Level chemistry classes are majority ex-IGCSE. Tutors working with these students spend early sessions on command terms rather than content, because the content is largely present and the response style is not. That is a technique repair measured in weeks, not a re-teach measured in months.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the subjects Abu Dhabi Standard Level chemists most often take alongside the course, with notes on what each one actually assesses.

Chemistry

Standard Level

Two themes, two written papers and one investigation. Paper 1 is split between multiple-choice and data-based items; Paper 2 carries structured written answers. Mark loss concentrates in quantitative accuracy, sign conventions in energetics, order deduction from rate data, and command-term mismatch on the longer written items.

Chemistry

Higher Level

The same two themes with added depth: entropy and Gibbs energy, electrode potentials, buffer calculations and a longer organic mechanism list. Students considering a move up or down mid-course should compare where their marks are actually lost, because a student losing arithmetic marks will lose them at either level.

Biology

Standard Level and Higher Level

Four themes with a heavier recall load and the same investigation weighting. Students taking Chemistry and Biology at Standard Level frequently schedule both investigations in the same fortnight by accident, which is a planning problem rather than a chemistry one and is easily avoided.

Physics

Standard Level

Shares the paper architecture and tests graph interpretation and unit handling harder than chemistry does. A student losing chemistry marks to units and significant figures will usually be losing physics marks to the same habit, which makes a single tutor across both unusually efficient.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

Standard Level

The common pairing with Standard Level chemistry. Its statistics content is directly reusable when processing investigation data, including uncertainty and correlation, which the chemistry guide assumes a student can already handle.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

Standard Level

Logarithms and exponential change appear in chemistry kinetics and in pH work. Weakness here reads as a chemistry weakness on a marked script, which is why a diagnosis that stops at the subject name often points paid hours at the wrong course.

Environmental Systems and Societies

Standard Level

A transdisciplinary option that can satisfy both the sciences and the individuals-and-societies requirement. Students who drop chemistry in DP1 often land here, and the catch-up needed is systems thinking and terminology rather than further chemistry.

Sports, Exercise and Health Science

Standard Level

Covers energy systems and biochemistry that overlap with the chemistry energetics material. Abu Dhabi schools with established sports programmes offer it widely and students can reuse work across both syllabuses if the revision is sequenced deliberately.

Business Management

Standard Level and Higher Level

A frequent sixth subject for Standard Level chemists heading to commerce or health-management routes. Its written-response demands are closer to Paper 2 chemistry than students expect, so command-term work done for one subject tends to pay in the other.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

The exhibition and essay fall in the same term as the chemistry investigation in most Abu Dhabi schools. Families planning hours around chemistry deadlines alone frequently find the student has no writing capacity left in exactly those weeks.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Standard Level chemistry requests fall into three shapes in Abu Dhabi. All three run one-to-one over live video, and the right one depends on whether content, technique or a deadline is the problem.

Topic repair block

A short block for a specific gap: moles and concentration, energetics sign conventions, rate order deduction, organic families. The tutor works from past-paper items on that topic alone until the student can produce answers cold, then the block ends. This format exists because an open-ended weekly arrangement is poor value for a student whose problem is two identifiable topics rather than the subject.

  • Scoped to named topics at the first session
  • Built on past-paper items, not on re-explained notes
  • Finishes with a cold mixed set on the same topics
  • Ends when the set scores, rather than running on by default

Paper 2 technique work

Weekly sessions for a student whose content knowledge is adequate and whose written answers are not. The work is reading the question, identifying the command term, writing the response to markscheme wording and comparing it with the published criteria. It is unglamorous and it is where most Standard Level grades move, because Paper 2 is 44 per cent of the result.

  • Command term identified before any chemistry is written
  • Student's own answer compared against markscheme wording
  • Extended items attempted under time, not discussed in the abstract
  • A short list of recurring phrasing errors kept and reviewed

Investigation support, timed to the school deadline

A small number of sessions around the scientific investigation, following the school's internal dates rather than the exam session. Methodology, uncertainty and evaluation are taught, then feedback is given on the student's own dated drafts as questions. The report stays the student's own work from the first version to the submitted one.

  • Criteria explained in plain terms before any writing starts
  • Uncertainty and significant figures taught on the student's own data
  • Feedback phrased as questions, never as replacement text
  • The school supervisor remains the authority on scope and approval

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Abu Dhabi

01

The three components, and what each one is really testing

Standard Level Chemistry is assessed by two written papers and one internal investigation, and each of the three rewards a different capability. Treating them as one subject called chemistry is the main reason revision time gets spent badly. A student can be well prepared for the multiple-choice half of Paper 1 and badly prepared for the data-based half sitting in the same booklet, and nothing in a school grade distinguishes the two.

Paper 1 carries 36 per cent of the grade. Its first part is multiple-choice, which rewards breadth of recall and fast elimination. Its second part is data-based and rewards something quite different: reading a table or graph, extracting the relationship and justifying a conclusion. Paper 2 carries 44 per cent and is where structured and extended responses live, with marks allocated against specific markscheme lines rather than general correctness. The investigation carries 20 per cent and is the only component with no clock on it and no second attempt.

The weightings should drive the hours. A student two grades short with ten weeks left should be working on Paper 2 technique and the data-based half of Paper 1, because that is where 60 per cent of the available marks sit in the parts most responsive to short-term work. A DP1 student with the investigation ahead of them is in a different position entirely, since 20 per cent of the final grade can be secured calmly in term time rather than defended under exam pressure. The table below sets out what each component asks and where Standard Level students commonly lose it.

CHEMISTRY STANDARD LEVEL: COMPONENTS, WEIGHTINGS AND WHERE MARKS GO
ComponentWhat it testsShare of the gradeWhere Standard Level marks are commonly lost
Paper 1, multiple-choice sectionBreadth of recall across both themes, fast elimination, no working creditedPart of the 36 per centThin coverage of one or two sub-topics; guessing rather than eliminating; no data booklet practice

Paper 2, structured questionsApplying chemistry to unfamiliar contexts with working shown and units carriedPart of the 44 per centUnrounded intermediates, lost units, stopping one step short of the final conversion

02

Two themes, and why a finished topic is never finished

The chemistry guide organises everything under two themes. Structure deals with the nature of matter: particles, bonding, the periodic trends and the models used to describe them. Reactivity deals with what happens and why: energetics, rates, equilibrium, acids and bases, oxidation and reduction, and the organic families. Standard Level content forms the spine of both, and the deeper material is layered onto the same structure for Higher Level students rather than taught as separate units.

The design has a practical implication that catches Abu Dhabi families out every year. Topics are not sealed. Bonding reappears inside energetics when bond enthalpies are used. Moles reappear in every quantitative question in the course, in both themes, until the final paper. Periodic trends reappear in reactivity when oxidation states are assigned. A student who did not consolidate moles in the first term is not missing one topic; they are paying a small tax on nearly every calculation for two years.

This is why the sequence of paid sessions should follow the student rather than the school's scheme of work. If the class is on organic chemistry and the student cannot reliably convert concentration units, the organic lesson will go in and come straight back out, because the questions in that topic are quantitative too. Repairing the foundation first looks like falling further behind for a fortnight and then stops looking like that. Any tutor who agrees to simply follow the class without checking the foundation is agreeing to the comfortable version of the job.

03

Paper 1A and Paper 1B are two different exams in one booklet

The most common misreading of the Standard Level assessment is treating Paper 1 as a single multiple-choice test. It has two parts and they reward different skills. The multiple-choice section tests recall and elimination across the whole syllabus, with no credit for working and no partial marks. The data-based section gives the student information they have not seen before and asks them to process it, draw a relationship out of it and justify a conclusion in writing.

Students who revise by content list prepare well for the first and not at all for the second, because you cannot revise unfamiliar data. What you can practise is the procedure: read the axes and the units before the question, state the trend in terms of the quantities given, identify the one anomalous point if there is one, then answer the question actually asked. Done repeatedly on past items, that routine is worth several marks to a mid-band student within a few weeks.

The multiple-choice half has its own technique, and it is mostly about the data booklet and about elimination. Students lose marks hunting for a constant they could have located in seconds, or taking a value from the wrong table under time pressure. Others answer every question as a calculation when two of the four options could have been discarded on a units check alone. Neither failing is a chemistry failing, which is why both respond quickly to drilling and why neither is addressed by re-teaching topics.

04

Paper 2: the forty-four per cent that decides the grade

Paper 2 is the largest single component of the Standard Level grade and the one where the gap between knowing chemistry and scoring in chemistry is widest. Marks are awarded against specific markscheme lines. A student can write a chemically sound paragraph that collects nothing because the markscheme wanted a comparison and received a description, or wanted a justification referencing given data and received a general explanation.

The structured questions reward disciplined working. Units carried through every line, intermediates left unrounded until the final answer, significant figures matched to the data given, and the final conversion actually performed rather than assumed obvious. Experienced markers see the same three losses in Abu Dhabi scripts as everywhere else: a correct method abandoned one step early, an answer quoted to a precision the data cannot support, and a missing unit on an otherwise perfect calculation.

The extended responses reward structure. Three developed points scoring three marks beat one point explained three ways, which is the single most useful thing a student can be told about this paper. Practising that means writing answers under time and then comparing them line by line with the published markscheme, out loud, until the student can predict where the marks were going to be. It is slow work and it moves grades, which is the opposite of how most revision time gets allocated. A student who has never compared one of their own answers with a markscheme line has no idea what the paper is rewarding, however much chemistry they know.

05

Command terms and what they are worth

Every IB chemistry question is built on a command term, and the term tells the student what kind of answer collects the marks. State wants a short answer with no reasoning. Explain wants a causal chain. Deduce wants a conclusion drawn from information provided in the question. Justify wants a conclusion supported by explicit reference to that information. Compare wants both sides addressed in the same sentence structure. These are not synonyms, and the markscheme does not treat them as such.

Command-term mismatch is the most expensive habit a Standard Level student can carry into Paper 2, because it costs marks on questions where the chemistry was known. It is also one of the most fixable, since the repair is procedural: circle the command term before writing, say what that term requires, then write to it. Most students need three to four weeks of corrected practice before the habit sticks, and the improvement shows on a marked script rather than in how confident they feel.

The table below sets out the terms that appear most often in Standard Level chemistry papers, what the markscheme is looking for, the usual mark tariff and the failure that recurs. It is worth printing and keeping next to the student while they attempt past papers, because the point is not to memorise definitions but to interrupt the reflex of writing everything known about the topic. Students who keep it visible for a fortnight usually stop needing it, which is the sign that the habit has transferred.

COMMAND TERMS IN STANDARD LEVEL CHEMISTRY PAPERS

06

Topic to paper: where each Standard Level topic actually gets examined

Revision plans usually run through the syllabus in order, which treats every topic as equally likely to appear in every component. The examinations do not work that way. Some topics turn up overwhelmingly as multiple-choice recall, some are the standard material for data-based questions, and some are the reliable homes of extended written responses. Knowing which is which changes how a topic should be revised, not merely when.

The map below is drawn from the pattern of past papers rather than from the guide's ordering. It is a planning tool, not a prediction: anything in the syllabus can be examined anywhere, and a student should not skip a component for a topic because the map is thin there. What it does is stop a student from preparing a topic in the wrong register, for example learning periodicity as a set of facts when the questions ask them to justify a trend from supplied radii and electronegativity values.

Used properly, the map also exposes where investigation material overlaps with examined material. Students who choose a kinetics or energetics investigation are practising, over several weeks, exactly the data processing that the Paper 1 data-based section rewards. Those who pick an unusual context get less of that spillover. Neither choice is wrong, but a family deciding how to spend limited hours should know which investigation topics are doing double duty. In a term where the budget covers eight sessions rather than twenty, that overlap is the difference between covering one component and covering two.

07

Where Standard Level students drop investigation marks

The investigation carries the same 20 per cent at Standard Level as at Higher Level, and the published criteria are the same. What differs is scale: a Standard Level student has less taught content to draw on and usually less laboratory time, so the realistic ambition is a well-executed narrow question rather than an original one. The marks are lost in predictable places, and almost all of them are decided before any data are collected.

The first and largest loss is a research question too broad to answer with the data a school laboratory can produce. A question about the factors affecting reaction rate cannot be answered; a question about the effect of a specified concentration range on the rate of one named reaction can. The second loss is uncertainty treated as a closing paragraph rather than as part of the method, so instrument precision is quoted without being propagated into the processed values. The third is an evaluation that lists weaknesses without weighting them, when the criteria reward judging which weakness actually mattered.

A tutor's legitimate role here is teaching the criteria, the uncertainty treatment and the evaluation structure, then giving feedback on the student's own dated drafts in the form of questions. The report stays the student's work from first version to last. Finished investigations are openly sold in this market, and the risk of submitting one falls on the candidate, as a malpractice matter handled by the IB rather than a disagreement with a provider. The school supervisor remains the authority on scope and approval throughout.

08

What one session can close, and what takes six

It is a fair question and it is rarely answered honestly. Some things genuinely move in a single session. Data-booklet navigation does. A specific calculation procedure, like converting between concentration units or constructing an energy cycle, does. So does the command-term routine, in the sense that a student can learn to identify the term and name what it requires within an hour, although making it automatic under exam pressure takes longer.

Other things do not. A topic a student has never understood takes two or three sessions, because the first produces comprehension, the second produces unassisted recall and the third produces it under time. Quantitative accuracy as a habit takes about a month of corrected practice, since it is a behaviour rather than a piece of knowledge. Extended-response structure on Paper 2 takes four to six weeks because it requires writing, marking and rewriting several times. An investigation needs a block spread across the school's own deadlines and cannot be compressed into a weekend.

The practical consequence for an Abu Dhabi family with a limited budget is to buy in the right order. Procedural fixes first, since they are cheap and show quickly. Then the topic gaps that recur across the syllabus, which is almost always moles and energetics. Then written technique, which is slow and worth the most. Buying in the reverse order is the most common way a family spends a term of fees and ends it with the same grade and the belief that chemistry is simply hard.

09

Why there is no in-home option, and what replaces it

Parents searching for a home tutor in Abu Dhabi deserve a direct answer rather than a redirection. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Abu Dhabi or anywhere in the UAE; in-home visits are a service we run only in India. Standard Level chemistry teaching for Abu Dhabi families is delivered one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time slots. The in-home market here is genuine, with published bands of roughly AED 180-350 an hour in the Bestimate 2026 rate survey, and higher where travel is long or the subject is scarce.

What the online format changes is the shortlist. In an in-home arrangement the pool is whoever will travel to Al Shamkha or Al Falah at 17:30 on a Tuesday, which is a small set and not sorted by chemistry. Online, the shortlist is chemists, and a student losing marks on rate order deduction can be matched with someone who marks that question type regularly rather than with a generalist scientist who will prepare the topic the night before.

The second change is the artefact. Standard Level chemistry is written and calculated work, so sessions happen on a shared screen where the sign convention is corrected as it is written and the annotated page is saved. Families who began by searching for home tuition usually end up valuing the scheduling most: a fixed evening slot that survives traffic on the Mussafah road, a late bus from the island, or a change of plan at 16:00. Nothing is promised at your address, because nothing needs to be.

10

ADEK, the practical scheme of work, and what the laboratory notebook is for

Private schools in Abu Dhabi are overseen by the Department of Education and Knowledge, which supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate and publishes inspection outcomes. That is useful background on a school, and it says nothing about whether your child can deduce a rate order. The documents that matter for chemistry are the ones your school produces: the scheme of work, the practical programme and the internal deadline calendar for the investigation.

Ask for the practical schedule specifically. Standard Level chemistry students are expected to have hands-on laboratory experience across the course, and the practical programme is where investigation skills are built long before the assessed investigation begins. A student who has been passive in the laboratory and attentive in theory lessons tends to produce a weak methodology section, and that is visible months ahead if anyone is looking at the notebook.

Abu Dhabi also has a rule worth knowing before you hire anyone. ADEK's professional-ethics expectations for private and charter school staff have been reported as prohibiting paid private tutoring of students enrolled at the teacher's own school, and a teacher tutoring privately is required to hold the MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years. Confirm the current wording with the school or on ADEK's policy pages, and treat an offer from your child's own chemistry teacher with that in mind.

Where we tutor

Abu Dhabi areas our Standard Level chemistry students come from

Sessions are online, so the area you live in changes nothing about availability. It changes when a session can start, because school-run times and bus routes differ sharply across the emirate.

Al Mushrif

An established inner-city area within short reach of several city schools. Journeys home are brief, which makes a 16:30 chemistry slot workable here when it would be impossible for a family on the airport corridor.

Al Khalidiyah

Dense apartment living close to the Corniche and the city-centre school cluster. Households here often run two Diploma students on alternating evenings rather than one shared slot, because subject needs rarely match.

Corniche

Central and well served by schools, with the practical constraint being after-school activities rather than travel. Weekend morning blocks are popular for investigation work and timed paper practice.

Masdar City

A compact community with families attending schools across the mainland corridor. Bus runs are long, so sessions here usually start at 18:00 or later on weekdays.

Shakhbout City

A villa community on the mainland with students split between several Diploma schools. Siblings frequently attend different schools, so fixed individual slots prevent the scheduling collisions that cancel lessons.

Al Falah

A newer mainland community where Diploma numbers are rising. Families here report the longest school-bus runs in the emirate, which is why a weekend double block is often more reliable than two weekday evenings.

Mussafah

A mixed residential and industrial area with students travelling towards the city or the airport corridor. Evening traffic is heavy in both directions, and an online slot removes it from the calculation entirely.

Al Shamkha

A large and growing mainland community some distance from the island schools. In-home tutoring here carries the highest travel premium in the emirate, which is the most common reason families in Al Shamkha move to online sessions.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Abu Dhabi

Al Mushrif, Al Khalidiyah and the Corniche

The city-centre cluster, where Diploma chemistry groups tend to be established and taught by subject specialists. Requests from these schools are mostly technique repair: command terms, data-based questions and calculation accuracy rather than missing content.

  • Abu Dhabi International School
  • Al Bateen Academy
  • International Community School Abu Dhabi
  • Merryland International School
  • Al Mushrif community schools

Shakhbout City, Al Falah and Al Shamkha

The mainland communities, where students travel furthest and newer Diploma cohorts are smaller. Chemistry requests here skew towards topic repair, usually stoichiometry and energetics, because a smaller class moves at the pace of its middle.

  • Emirates National School Al Shamkha
  • GEMS American Academy Abu Dhabi
  • Raha International School
  • Yasmina Academy
  • Al Falah community schools

These schools are named because students we support attend them and to describe the Abu Dhabi Diploma landscape. No affiliation, endorsement or partnership is implied, and current programme offerings and inspection outcomes should be checked on ADEK's own school listings.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Name the component, not the subject

The most useful opening message says which paper the marks were lost on and, if possible, which questions. Chemistry is going badly is a starting point; a mid-band Paper 2 with blank extended responses is a brief. Where a marked script exists, a photograph of one question shortens the diagnosis by an entire session.

  2. 02

    A free 45-minute diagnostic trial

A working session rather than a sales call, with no card details required. The student attempts items across the components and the tutor identifies whether the problem is coverage, procedure, command terms or arithmetic. You are told which of those it looks like and roughly how many sessions each would take to close.

  3. 03

Scope the block, with an end to it

Topic repair blocks are scoped to named topics and end when a cold mixed set on those topics scores. Technique work runs weekly because it is a habit change. Investigation support follows the school's internal deadlines. Agreeing the shape before the first paid hour prevents an open-ended arrangement that nobody reviews.

  4. 04

Fix the weekly slot in Gulf Standard Time

Sessions are booked at a fixed weekly time chosen around the school run. Families in Al Mushrif and Al Khalidiyah commonly take 16:30; families in Al Shamkha, Al Falah and Mussafah usually need 18:00 or later. During Ramadan most slots move to post-Iftar evenings or weekend mornings without a rescheduling charge.

  5. 05

Review against the component, not the mood

Progress is checked against the thing that was wrong. If the diagnosis was command terms, the test is whether marked extended responses now collect the available marks. If it was coverage, the test is a cold set on those topics. A review that asks only whether the student enjoys the sessions is not a review.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The assessment is the starting point

Sessions are planned from the component weightings and the error pattern rather than from the school's current topic. A student ten weeks out with a weak Paper 2 is working on extended responses even if the class is on organic chemistry, because that is where the available marks are.

Command terms taught against the markscheme

Answers are compared line by line with published markscheme wording, read aloud, until the student can predict where the marks sit. This is the least popular part of the work and the part that most reliably moves a Standard Level grade on the paper worth 44 per cent.

Blocks that are allowed to end

A topic repair block is scoped at the start and finishes when a cold set on those topics scores. Nothing renews by default. A provider whose arrangement has no natural end point has an incentive you should be aware of when the grade stops moving.

Chemists, not geography

Because delivery is online, matching is done on the question types your child drops marks on rather than on who will drive to your community at 17:30. For a subject where mark loss is this specific, that difference is larger than it sounds.

A stated line on coursework

Investigation feedback is given as questions on the student's own dated drafts, and the report stays the student's work throughout. In a market where finished coursework is openly sold, the candidate is the one who carries the malpractice risk, which makes this worth insisting on.

Market rates quoted with their source

AED figures on this page are published bands from named surveys and competitor rate cards, with the year stated. They describe the Abu Dhabi market, not a fee list, and no success rate or grade-improvement statistic is published anywhere on this page.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

How is IB Chemistry Standard Level assessed, and what is each paper worth?+

Three components. Paper 1 is 36 per cent and contains a multiple-choice section plus a data-based section, which test different skills despite arriving in one booklet. Paper 2 is 44 per cent and carries structured questions and extended written responses marked against specific markscheme lines. The scientific investigation is 20 per cent, marked internally by the school against published criteria and moderated externally on a sample. Those weightings should drive how paid hours are allocated: Paper 2 holds the largest share of the marks and responds well to technique work.

What is the difference between the two parts of Paper 1 in Standard Level chemistry?+

The multiple-choice section tests breadth of recall and elimination, with no credit for working and no partial marks. The data-based section supplies information the student has not seen before and asks them to process it and justify a conclusion. Students who revise by content list prepare well for the first and not at all for the second, because unfamiliar data cannot be revised. What can be practised is the procedure: axes and units first, trend stated in the given quantities, anomaly identified, then the actual question answered.

Which Standard Level chemistry topics carry the most weight in Paper 2?+

Stoichiometry, energetics, rates and the acid-base and redox material account for the bulk of the structured and extended items, because each one supports multi-step calculation and causal explanation. Organic chemistry appears steadily, usually as pathway and naming questions. Periodicity and bonding surface more often as trend-justification items than as calculations. None of this means a topic can be skipped, but it does mean a student with ten weeks left should not be spending equal time on every heading in the guide.

Our son revises by rereading his notes and still scores 4. What should he do instead?+

Write chemistry under correction. Rereading produces recognition, which feels like knowledge and collapses under an unfamiliar question. The replacement is attempting past-paper items cold, marking them against the published markscheme, and keeping a short list of the errors that recur. For most mid-band Standard Level students the list is short and consistent: command-term mismatch, unrounded intermediates, missing units and conclusions stated without reference to given data. Three to four weeks of corrected written practice changes a marked script more than a term of rereading.

How many marks do command terms cost a Standard Level chemistry student?+

On a typical Paper 2 a student who answers the chemistry rather than the command term loses several marks on questions where the content was known, which is the most frustrating category of loss available. The terms are not synonyms: state wants a word, deduce wants a conclusion from supplied data, explain wants a causal chain, justify wants explicit reference to the evidence, and compare wants both items addressed together. The repair is procedural rather than academic, and it usually takes three to four weeks of corrected practice to become automatic under time.

Is Standard Level chemistry enough for a pharmacy or health-science application?+

It depends entirely on the university and the country, and the only reliable source is the admissions page of each programme your child is considering. Some health-science and pharmacy routes accept chemistry at Standard Level; many medical and some pharmacy programmes require it at Higher Level. Check before DP1 subject choices are finalised, because a change later is disruptive and sometimes impossible. A tutor can help your child cope with either level, but nobody should advise you to assume a requirement that the university itself states clearly.

Which investigation criterion do Standard Level students lose most marks on?+

The losses cluster at the start and the end. At the start, a research question too broad for a school laboratory to answer caps the mark before any data exist: the effect of concentration on rate is answerable, the factors affecting reaction rate is not. At the end, evaluations list weaknesses without judging which one actually mattered, and uncertainty is quoted rather than propagated into the processed values. Both are planning failures rather than knowledge failures, and both are far cheaper to fix in advance than afterwards.

Does a Standard Level chemistry student need to learn the organic mechanisms?+

The formal curly-arrow mechanism work with lone pairs and formal charges belongs to the Higher Level extension. Standard Level students need the reaction pathways, the functional group transformations, naming and the conditions, which are examined steadily in both papers. A student who has been copying mechanism notation from a Higher Level classmate's notes is spending time on material that will not be rewarded in their paper, and that is worth checking early in the second year rather than late.

Can one session fix a topic my daughter has never understood?+

One session produces comprehension, which is not the same as marks. Expect two or three: the first to understand it, the second to recall it unassisted, the third to produce it under time on an unfamiliar question. Procedural things genuinely do move in one session, including data-booklet navigation, a specific calculation route or the command-term routine. Habits such as quantitative accuracy take about a month of corrected practice, and extended-response structure takes four to six weeks because it requires writing, marking and rewriting several times.

Will a tutor visit our villa in Abu Dhabi for Standard Level chemistry lessons?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Abu Dhabi or anywhere in the UAE; in-home visits are a service we run only in India. Teaching for Abu Dhabi families is one-to-one over live video, in Gulf Standard Time slots. The local in-home market is real and charges roughly AED 180-350 an hour on published 2026 survey bands, with more where travel is long. Online delivery trades the person in the room for a chemistry specialist matched to the question types your child drops, and for a slot that traffic cannot cancel.

What does Standard Level chemistry leave out that Higher Level includes?+

The main omissions are entropy and Gibbs energy, electrode potentials and electrochemical cell calculations, buffer and pH-curve work, and a substantially extended organic section including mechanism notation and stereochemistry. The two themes and the investigation requirement are shared. Knowing the boundary matters for two reasons: a Standard Level student should not be revising Higher Level extension material, and a student considering moving up should understand that the added content is mathematical in character rather than simply more of the same.

How do school practical lessons connect to the written papers?+

More directly than most students realise. The data-based section of Paper 1 and the quantitative parts of Paper 2 both test exactly what a careful practical programme builds: reading instruments to their precision, recording units, noticing anomalies and explaining a trend from numbers. A student who is passive in the laboratory and attentive in theory lessons tends to produce weak methodology in the investigation and loses marks on data questions in the papers. Asking to see the practical schedule and the laboratory notebook is worth doing well before the investigation begins.

Is it worth moving from Chemistry Standard Level to another science in DP1?+

Sometimes, and the decision should be made on where the marks are being lost rather than on how the subject feels. A student losing marks to arithmetic and units will lose them in physics too, so the move solves nothing. A student who finds the quantitative load genuinely unmanageable may do better in a more descriptive science or in environmental systems and societies. Check the university requirements first, then speak to the school, since the transfer window and the catch-up involved are both set by them rather than by a tutor.

How much does Standard Level chemistry tuition cost per hour in Abu Dhabi?+

Published market bands put qualified online subject tutors at roughly AED 150-300 an hour and IB specialists higher, while in-home one-to-one sits at about AED 180-350 on the Bestimate 2026 survey, rising for scarce subjects. Unitors advertises IB tuition from AED 200 and TutorChase publishes AED 270 for its specialist tier. Those are other providers' published figures, quoted as market context rather than as our price. Ask what the hour includes, because marked work, written notes and draft feedback are often billed separately.

What happens if the class has moved on and my daughter has not?+

This is the most common reason Abu Dhabi families start paying, and the answer is to repair the foundation before chasing the class. If moles and unit conversion are shaky, lessons on the current topic will not hold, because the current topic is quantitative too. That means two or three sessions that look like falling further behind, followed by faster progress than before. A tutor who simply follows the class each week without checking the foundation has chosen the comfortable version of the job rather than the useful one.

Work out which component is losing the marks first

Before booking a term of chemistry sessions, find out what is actually wrong. Send the last paper your child sat, or a photograph of one question from it, and say which grade it produced. The free 45-minute diagnostic session identifies whether the problem is coverage, procedure, command terms or arithmetic, and says roughly how many sessions each of those would take to close. No card details are needed to book it. If the answer turns out to be two topics and a habit rather than a subject, you will have saved most of the budget you were about to commit.
