IB IGCSE Tutor near me in Yas Island

Searching for an IB IGCSE tutor near me from Yas Island assumes the answer is a tutor. Sometimes it is not. A Yas Island family has six realistic options for academic support, two of them already paid for, and the honest comparison shows which problems each one can solve. This page sets them side by side, says plainly when one-to-one tuition is the wrong purchase, and only then explains how ours works.

  • Six support options compared, including the free ones
  • What school provision already covers, named explicitly

IB & IGCSE in Yas Island

Start by comparing everything, including the options you already pay for

Almost every page competing for this search assumes that the problem is solved by hiring a tutor. That is a convenient assumption for a tutoring platform and it is not always true. A Yas Island family facing a disappointing report has six genuine options, and two of them are already included in the school fees they pay. Starting with those is not modesty; it is the cheapest sensible first move, and it also sharpens what a paid tutor should then be asked to do.

The six are these. The school's own support, which usually includes departmental catch-up sessions, teacher clinics and access to the class teacher's marking. Self-study using the board's own published materials, which are free and which most students never open. A peer study group, which on a small island with a concentrated cohort is more practical than it sounds. A tuition centre group class. An online group course. And one-to-one tuition, in person or over video.

Each of those solves a different problem. School support is the right answer when a student has missed content through absence, or has one specific misunderstanding a teacher can clear in ten minutes. Self-study with official materials is the right answer when the student is capable and disorganised rather than confused. A peer group works when the issue is motivation and pace. A group class works for content coverage at a low price. One-to-one works when the problem is specific, diagnosed, and requires somebody to watch an individual student work.

The expensive mistake is buying one-to-one tuition for a problem that one of the cheaper options would solve. A student who is coping but not doing their homework does not need a specialist at an hourly rate; they need structure, and a parent can provide it. A student who has missed three weeks with illness needs the school's catch-up provision, which is free and which is also better informed than any external tutor about what was actually covered in those weeks.

There is one Yas Island specific point in this comparison. The island has a concentrated resident cohort and a leisure-led built environment, which makes a peer study group unusually workable and a second evening commute to a mainland tuition centre unusually tedious. It also hosts large-scale events, including the Grand Prix weekend at the end of the first term, which affect anything requiring travel on those weekends. Those facts change the ranking of the six options rather than the options themselves.

IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; in-home tutoring is a service we run only in India. Abu Dhabi families are taught one-to-one over live video. Market figures quoted on this page are published rates attributed to the sources that produced them, not our prices.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

The comparison changes slightly by programme, because the two routes make different things available. These are the programmes a Yas Island household is choosing support for.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma Programme

Six subjects with an internal assessment in each, plus the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and Creativity, Activity, Service. The Diploma gives every student a named supervisor for the Extended Essay and a subject teacher responsible for internal assessment guidance, which means the free support available is more structured than on the British track and is more often left unused.

Abu Dhabi private schools are licensed and inspected by ADEK, and UAE Diploma schools sit the May session. No IB session or results date appears on this page: the IB's own site blocks automated access, nothing has been confirmed at source, and a date a family plans around should come from the school's IB coordinator.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE and Pearson Edexcel International GCSE

Terminal written papers against named syllabus codes, with Core and Extended routes at Cambridge and Foundation and Higher tiers at Pearson. Because assessment is terminal, past papers and mark schemes published by the boards are the single most valuable free resource available, and the one most students use least systematically.

UAE Cambridge candidates sit the June and November series; the February and March series is offered to India only. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs May/June and November, with the November 2026 final timetable running from late October to 19 November 2026. Cambridge allocates each centre to one of six administrative zones and warns that the wrong zone's timetable is the candidate's own risk.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

IB Middle Years Programme

Assessed against four criteria per subject with published level descriptors. The descriptors are available to students and parents, which makes this the programme where the gap between free information and actual use is widest: most criterion-level marks are lost by students who have never read the descriptor they are being marked against.

On a comparison page this matters because the cheapest intervention in the Middle Years Programme is reading the descriptors, which costs nothing. A tutor can speed that up and should not be the only route to it.

ASALAges 16-18 · Years 12-13

Cambridge International AS and A Level

The British track's sixth form where a school does not run the Diploma. Narrower and deeper, and the point in the British route where school support is typically most generous because class sizes are smaller. That makes the free option genuinely strong here and worth exhausting first.

The Ministry of Education's British-track equivalency route asks for one accredited Advanced Level subject at no less than grade E, or two Advanced Subsidiary subjects at the same grade, on top of five International GCSE passes at no less than E or grade 3.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Different subjects respond differently to the six options, which is the practical content of a comparison. Each entry names which option tends to work best for that subject.

Mathematics

IB AA and AI; Cambridge 0580; Pearson 4MA1

The subject where one-to-one most reliably outperforms the alternatives, because the failure is usually a specific procedure breaking in the middle and somebody has to watch the student work to see where. Group classes cover content; they cannot diagnose an individual's step three.

Physics

HL, SL, Core, Extended

Responds well to self-study with official materials for the content and to one-to-one for the quantitative work. School laboratory provision cannot be replicated by any paid option, which makes the free route the only route for the practical side.

Chemistry

HL, SL, Core, Extended

Qualitative analysis tests and organic conditions are pure recall and respond to self-study or a peer group. Mole calculations and energetics need individual attention. A family can split this subject between a free option and a paid one quite deliberately.

Biology

HL, SL, Core, Extended

The highest content volume and the subject most amenable to a peer group, because testing each other on recall is genuinely effective and costs nothing. Command-term discipline is the part that benefits from one-to-one attention.

English

IB Language A; Cambridge 0500 and 0475; Pearson 4EA1

Needs individual feedback on the student's own writing, which is the one thing a group class cannot provide and the one thing a class teacher provides free as part of normal marking. Ask the school first here before anywhere else.

Economics and Business

HL, SL, Cambridge 0455 and 0450

Diagram accuracy and case application respond well to group work and to self-study from published materials. Evaluation technique needs somebody reading the student's own paragraphs, which points to one-to-one or to the class teacher.

History and Geography

HL, SL, Cambridge 0470 and 0460

Case-study recall with specific figures is peer-group and self-study territory. Source handling and the internal investigation at Diploma level need individual guidance, and the Diploma supervisor is the free version of that.

Computer Science

HL, SL, Cambridge 0478

Pseudocode and trace tables are mechanical and can be drilled alone with published past papers. The higher level case study at Diploma level benefits from discussion, which a peer group can supply as well as a tutor can.

Arabic

IB Language B and ab initio; Cambridge First and Foreign Language

Required alongside the licensed international curriculum under federal rules covering Arabic, social studies and Islamic studies. Content is prescribed and may not be substituted, so support has to follow the school's own approved material, which makes the school the first place to ask.

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay

Diploma core

Every Diploma student has a supervisor for the Extended Essay as part of the programme. That is free, structured and better informed about the school's internal deadlines than any external tutor. A paid block should supplement it, not substitute for it.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Where one-to-one is the right answer, these are the shapes it takes. All are delivered over live video; IB Gram does not attend UAE addresses.

Diagnostic only

One session, one marked paper, one written output: named topics rather than general weaknesses, and an honest estimate of the hours a repair needs. Some families take that list to the school and use its free provision instead. That is a legitimate outcome and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise.

  • A single session with a defined deliverable
  • Named topics, not a description of the problem
  • An hour estimate you can act on anywhere
  • No obligation to continue with us

Bounded repair block

Three to six sessions on one named problem with a defined end point, triggered by a diagnosis rather than by a feeling. The block finishes. This is where one-to-one genuinely outperforms every cheaper option, because somebody is watching one student work.

  • One problem at a time, finished before the next
  • Fixed session count agreed up front
  • Built on the student's own marked work
  • Ends with a timed set on that problem alone

Assessment or paper block

For a Diploma student, criterion coaching timed to the school's internal deadline. For an International GCSE candidate, timed papers after the mocks. Both are periods where the school has limited capacity and where a paid hour is therefore worth most.

  • Diploma: published criteria and mark allocations
  • IGCSE: papers under conditions, marked to the scheme
  • Scheduled from the school's own dates
  • A ranked list of what is costing the most marks

Scarce-specification cover

For routes and codes the local market barely covers: Cambridge 0606 Additional Mathematics, Applications and Interpretation at higher level, Pearson 4MB1. This is the case where no free or cheaper option exists, because the problem is availability rather than attention.

  • Matched to the specification, not the subject
  • The case where proximity cannot help at all
  • Honest waiting times, and sometimes a decline
  • The code written down for you either way

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Yas Island

01

The six options, side by side

Set out together, the options separate cleanly by the kind of problem they solve. Two are already paid for. Two are cheap. Two are expensive. The ranking that matters is not by price but by fit, and a family that works down the list in order usually spends less and gets more than one that starts at the bottom.

School support is first because it is already bought, and because the class teacher knows what was covered in the lessons your child missed, which no external tutor does. Self-study with the boards' own published materials is second because the materials are free, authoritative and barely used: a student who has never opened a mark scheme for their own specification has an unused resource of real value sitting on a public website.

A peer study group is third, and it is underrated in a community like this one. Three students from the same class testing each other on recall-heavy content is genuinely effective, costs nothing, and solves the motivation problem that no paid arrangement reliably solves. A tuition centre group class is fourth: cheap per hour, good for content coverage, and unable to match one student's specification or diagnose an individual error.

One-to-one tuition sits at the bottom of the list by cost and at the top by capability. It is the only option in which somebody watches an individual student work and can see where a procedure breaks. That is worth paying for when the problem is individual and diagnosed. It is poor value when the problem is absence, disorganisation or motivation, which are better addressed higher up the list.

02

What the school already provides, and why to use it first

  • For absence, the class teacher has information no tutor has
  • For a single misunderstanding, five minutes on site beats an hour elsewhere
  • Departmental clinics usually cost nothing and require no journey
  • Every Diploma student already has an Extended Essay supervisor

School provision is the most underused support available to a UAE family, partly because it is invisible: it does not advertise, it has no pricing page, and nobody follows up. It is also, for several specific problems, strictly better than anything a parent can buy.

The clearest case is absence. A student who has missed two or three weeks needs to know exactly what was covered, which examples were used, and what the class is assumed to know now. The class teacher has that information and an external tutor does not. A tutor filling that gap will cover the topic as they would normally teach it, which may be at the wrong depth or in a different order, and the student will then be slightly out of step rather than caught up.

The second case is a single specific misunderstanding. A student who cannot see why a particular step works usually needs five minutes with the person who taught it, not an hour with a stranger. Most departments run clinics, drop-ins or catch-up sessions after the taught day, and a student already on site can attend without any additional journey, which for a Yas Island household travelling back from the mainland is a material advantage.

The third is Diploma-specific. Every Diploma student has a supervisor for the Extended Essay and a subject teacher responsible for internal assessment guidance. Those people know the school's internal deadlines, have seen previous cohorts' submissions, and are accountable for the student's work in a way no external provider is. A paid coaching block should supplement that relationship rather than replace it, and a tutor who implies otherwise is overselling.

03

The free materials almost nobody uses

The examination boards publish a substantial body of material through their own channels, and students across this market reach the end of a two-year course without opening most of it. That is the single largest piece of unused value in the whole comparison, and it costs nothing to correct.

What exists varies by board and by qualification, and the reliable route is the board's own site plus whatever your school distributes. Syllabus or subject guide documents set out exactly what is examinable and, in the IB's case, the assessment criteria with their mark allocations. Past papers and mark schemes show what the examiner rewards, which is different from what a student assumes is wanted. Specimen and provisional timetable material shows the structure and the dates of a series.

Two cautions matter here, and they are the reason this section is a signpost rather than a library. These documents belong to the boards. We do not reproduce or distribute IB, Cambridge or Pearson syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes, grade-boundary tables or subject guides, and a provider offering a downloadable collection of them is offering something that is not theirs to give. Reference them, read them on the board's own site, and get them from your school.

The useful skill, and the thing a tutor can genuinely add here, is teaching a student to read a mark scheme critically: to see where method marks sit, how follow-through works, and why a description question is marked by element. A student who can do that gets more from every past paper they attempt afterwards, including the ones they attempt alone. That is a transferable gain rather than a dependency, which is the right thing for a paid hour to produce.

Group classes and peer groups compared honestly

A tuition centre group class is cheaper per hour than one-to-one and is frequently dismissed too quickly by families and oversold by providers. What it does well is deliver structured content coverage to a group at a low price. What it cannot do is match one student's syllabus code, route or tier, because the room contains several entries, and it cannot diagnose an individual's procedural error because nobody is watching one student's working.

For a Yas Island family there is a specific cost beyond the fee. Most of the emirate's centres are concentrated in central Abu Dhabi, which means a second journey off the island at the hour a student should be eating, on top of a school run that may already have taken an hour. Across a term that is a substantial amount of time in a car for content a student could read.

A peer study group is the option this market never mentions and it deserves to be named. Three or four students from the same class, same board, same tier, testing each other on recall-heavy content, works well for Biology, Geography case studies, Chemistry qualitative tests and the factual side of Economics. It costs nothing, it solves motivation and pace, and on an island with a concentrated cohort the logistics are trivial compared with a mainland commute.

Its limits are real. A peer group cannot diagnose, it cannot teach a procedure none of them has secured, and it can confidently reinforce a shared misunderstanding. The honest division of labour is that a peer group handles recall and pace, a paid hour handles diagnosis and technique, and a family that uses both spends less than one that uses one-to-one for everything.

When one-to-one tuition is the wrong purchase

  • Short absence: use the school, which knows what was covered
  • Disorganisation: structure beats an hourly rate
  • Motivation: a peer group or a school conversation usually does more
  • Undiagnosed worry: get a marked paper analysed before paying anyone

Saying this plainly is unusual on a tutoring page and it makes the rest of the page more useful. There are four situations in which paying for one-to-one tuition is poor value, and recognising them saves a family a great deal of money.

The first is short absence. A student who has missed two or three weeks needs the school's own catch-up provision, because the class teacher knows what was covered and an external tutor does not. The second is disorganisation. A student who understands the work and is not completing it has a structure problem, and structure is supplied by a parent, a timetable and a quiet room rather than by an hourly rate. Paying a specialist to supervise homework is the most common overspend in this market.

The third is motivation. A student who has decided they dislike a subject will sit politely through an expensive hour and absorb very little, and a peer group or a conversation with the school will usually do more. The fourth is undiagnosed general worry. "They are struggling" is not a problem a tutor can solve efficiently; it is a description that needs a marked paper and fifteen minutes of analysis before anyone is paid for anything.

Where one-to-one genuinely outperforms everything else is narrow and valuable. A diagnosed, specific procedural failure that somebody has to watch the student make. An internal assessment where published criteria need explaining and a draft needs individual feedback. A timed-paper block where one student's own script is marked with them. And a scarce specification the local market does not cover, where the problem is availability rather than attention. Those are the four cases, and they are what a block should be bought for.

06

Comparing two tutors once you have decided to buy one

Having established that a paid hour is the right purchase, the next comparison is between providers, and the published rates will not help: the bands overlap completely. Entry-level online runs AED 45-150, with EdFlik from AED 45-65 and Tutopiya from AED 33-52. A qualified subject tutor online runs AED 150-300, with Unitors listing International GCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. In-home runs AED 180-500 with travel included, per Bestimate's AED 180-350. Specialists run AED 200-450 and upwards, with TutorChase at AED 270 and BartyED at AED 650 for a premium named tutor.

Five questions separate a specialist from a generalist regardless of the figure. Which route, level, board, code or tier do you teach most weeks? What will you look for in a marked script? Which board's or guide's materials will we work from in session one? What is the end point of this block? And do you hold the MoHRE private tuition work permit?

That last one is worth stating because it is free and checkable. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, the private tuition work permit is granted free of charge for two years, and MoHRE's own service page lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time. Eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Individuals tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule is published, so any amount quoted to you is unverified.

One further check is about standing. Regulator approval is a numbered permit, not an adjective. IB Gram holds no approval, accreditation, licence or partnership from ADEK, KHDA, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, MoHRE, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson, and operates no office or centre in the UAE. We name those bodies on this page to explain what they govern, and any provider claiming otherwise about itself is making a statement you can ask them to evidence.

07

Why proximity drops out of the comparison entirely

  • Three of the six options involve no travel at all
  • A centre journey is unaffected by how near your tutor lives
  • Only in-home tuition rewards proximity, and it has the thinnest pool
  • Island event weekends cost travel-dependent arrangements real sessions

Of the six options, three involve no travel at all and two involve travel that proximity does not improve. School support happens where your child already is. Self-study and online delivery happen at home. A peer group travels within the community. A tuition centre requires a mainland journey whether you live on Yas Island or Al Reem. Only in-home tuition is affected by how near a tutor lives, and that is the option with the smallest pool and the highest rate.

On this island the in-home pool is particularly thin. Yas Island is residential and leisure-led rather than a concentration of teaching staff, most of whom live in the inland communities. An in-home quote to the island therefore carries a substantial travel component and comes from a short list of people willing to make the journey, which is the opposite of a selection process based on specification knowledge.

The island's event calendar sharpens the point. Large-scale events, including the Grand Prix weekend at the end of the first term, change access and road conditions for residents, and anything that depends on somebody driving loses sessions on those weekends. A plan that runs for twelve weeks and loses two of them to traffic has lost a sixth of its value for a reason nothing to do with teaching.

IB Gram resolves this by not offering the affected option. We do not sell home visits anywhere in the UAE; in-home tutoring is a service we run only in India. Abu Dhabi families are taught one-to-one over live video, which means the comparison a Yas Island family makes is between school support, free materials, a peer group, a group class and one-to-one online, and in none of those five does the address of the teacher matter.

08

What a tutor may do on assessed work, and why that is a comparison point too

  • A tutor explains criteria and gives feedback on the student's own draft
  • No tutor writes, rewrites, edits to completion or supplies text
  • Board documents are cited and linked, never reproduced
  • The Diploma supervisor's guidance is free and carries accountability

Both routes place some marks inside work the student must author, and this is a place where the options genuinely differ in what they are allowed to offer. A class teacher or Diploma supervisor can guide within the school's own framework, with accountability. A peer group can discuss. A tutor can teach, explain criteria and give feedback on a draft the student wrote. Nobody may produce the work.

Stated precisely: a tutor may teach the skills a task assesses, explain each criterion and what its marks are awarded for, discuss topic ideas the student has proposed, teach the techniques the student has chosen to use, and give feedback on a draft the student has written. That is substantial, and in the Diploma it is the highest-value paid hour available, because most marks in those components are lost to criteria nobody read rather than to content nobody knew.

No tutor may write the work, rewrite a draft into its final form, edit it to completion, or supply text for submission. One page competing for these searches sells completed internal assessments outright at a published price. The risk in that transaction falls on the student, whose Diploma is what a malpractice finding costs, and that asymmetry is the reason to state the boundary before anyone pays rather than after.

This is a comparison point because it is a reason to prefer the free option first. A Diploma supervisor's guidance carries the school's accountability and institutional knowledge of previous cohorts. A tutor adds criterion literacy and individual feedback on top. A provider offering to produce the work adds nothing and removes the only thing the student actually owns, which is authorship.

Where we tutor

What is locally available to a Yas Island family, and what is not

This list is about availability rather than character. For each area it names what support option that community genuinely offers a Yas Island household.

Yas Island

Concentrated residential districts and a leisure-led built environment, with school provision on the island. The realistic local options are school support, a peer group within walking or short driving distance, and anything delivered online. Resident subject specialists are few.

Al Raha Beach

Closest mainland cluster by road, with several British-curriculum campuses. A plausible origin for an in-home tutor and a short enough run that the travel component in a quote stays moderate rather than dominant.

Al Raha Gardens

Villa community inland of Al Raha Beach sharing its campuses. Relevant mainly because families here attend the same schools, which makes a cross-community peer group workable where the children are already classmates.

Khalifa City

The deepest pool of resident secondary teachers in the emirate and the origin of most in-home quotes a Yas family receives. Also where several campuses run departmental catch-up provision that island students can simply attend after school.

Al Reem Island

Reached through the mainland rather than directly. Its own growing provision and its own concentrated cohort, which makes it a comparable case rather than a resource for a Yas family.

Saadiyat Island

The furthest island by travel time, with its own campuses. Named here to make the point that cross-island arrangements of any physical kind are impractical in this emirate; online arrangements are indifferent to it.

Al Bateen, Al Khalidiyah and the Corniche

Where most of the emirate's tuition centres are concentrated. Group classes are genuinely cheaper per hour here and cost a Yas household a long second journey at precisely the hour a student should be eating.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City and Al Reef

Inland communities with large resident teaching populations and long afternoon journeys to the island. An in-home quote originating here sits at the upper end of the published band for travel reasons alone.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Yas Island

Yas Island and the eastern corridor

Students we support here attend campuses with their own departmental support provision, which is the first thing worth exhausting. We would rather a family used a free teacher clinic for a short absence and paid us for a diagnosed, specific problem than the other way round.

  • GEMS American Academy Abu Dhabi
  • Repton School Abu Dhabi
  • Abu Dhabi International School

Al Reem Island and central Abu Dhabi

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Ask the school first

Find out what departmental catch-up, clinics or revision provision already exists, and whether the class teacher can see your child for a specific question. It is included in your fees, it requires no journey, and for absence and single misunderstandings it is better than anything you can buy.

  2. 02

    Get one marked paper analysed

Before buying a block of hours, have a marked script read properly. Clustered losses mean a short repair; scattered single marks usually mean method, rounding or timing. Those are different purchases, and the analysis can be a single session or a free trial.

Decide which of the six options fits

Absence points to the school. Disorganisation points to structure at home. Recall-heavy content points to a peer group or self-study with the board's own materials. A diagnosed procedural failure, an internal assessment or a scarce specification points to one-to-one.

  4. 04

    Take the free trial lesson

A full one-to-one session over live video at no cost and with no card details taken. Judge it on whether the tutor named the route or code, read what you sent, and said plainly what the end point of a block would be.

  5. 05

Agree the end point before the start

A block that ends is a purchase; an open weekly arrangement is a subscription. Agreeing the end at the start is the single most effective way to avoid the main overspend in this market, and a tutor who cannot state one should be asked why.

  6. 06

Go back to the cheaper options when the block ends

Once a specific problem is repaired, retention and recall are peer-group and self-study work. A family that moves back up the list when the paid work is done spends a fraction of what a continuous arrangement costs and usually achieves more.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

We name the cases where we are the wrong answer

Short absence, disorganisation, motivation and undiagnosed general worry are all better addressed by the school, by structure at home or by a peer group. Saying so costs us work and makes the rest of this page worth reading.

Every option compared, including the free ones

School support and the boards' own published materials are the first two options on this page for a reason: they are already paid for or free, and for several specific problems they are strictly better than anything a parent can buy.

Blocks with a stated end point

A diagnostic is one session. A repair block is three to six. An assessment block runs to the school's internal deadline. A paper block ends at the series. Open-ended weekly arrangements are the largest avoidable cost in this market.

Matched to route, level and code

Published rate bands overlap completely, so the filter is which route or specification a tutor teaches habitually. For scarce codes we state a waiting time or decline, and we hand back the code either way.

Rates published with their sources

Every AED figure on this page names the competitor page or rate survey that published it. Three of the six competing pages we examined publish no price at all and the two that do quote in US dollars, which makes comparison impossible for a UAE family.

No claims, no reproduced materials, no unverified dates

IB Gram holds no approval, accreditation or partnership from ADEK, KHDA, the Ministry of Education, MoHRE, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson, and no UAE office. We reproduce no board documents and publish no IB session or results date.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Yas Island: your questions answered

What are all the support options a Yas Island family actually has?+

Six. School support including departmental clinics and the class teacher's marking, which is already inside your fees. Self-study using the boards' own published syllabuses, past papers and mark schemes, which are free. A peer study group with classmates. A tuition centre group class. An online group course. And one-to-one tuition. Each solves a different problem, and working down the list in that order usually costs less and achieves more than starting with the most expensive.

When is paying for a one-to-one tutor the wrong decision?+

In four situations. Short absence, where the class teacher knows what was covered and an external tutor does not. Disorganisation, where a student understands the work and is not doing it, which needs structure rather than an hourly rate. Motivation, where a peer group or a conversation with the school usually does more. And undiagnosed general worry, where a marked paper and fifteen minutes of analysis should come before anyone is paid for anything.

What does my child's school already provide that I am not using?+

Usually more than families realise, because school provision does not advertise. Departmental catch-up sessions, subject clinics or drop-ins after the taught day, and the class teacher's own marking and feedback. For Diploma students there is also a named Extended Essay supervisor and a subject teacher responsible for internal assessment guidance. All of it is included, happens on site with no extra journey, and is better informed about the school's own deadlines than any external provider.

Is a peer study group genuinely worth organising on Yas Island?+

Yes, and this market never mentions it. Three or four students from the same class, board and tier testing each other works well for recall-heavy material: Biology content, Geography case studies with their figures, Chemistry qualitative tests, the factual side of Economics. It costs nothing, it solves motivation and pace, and on an island with a concentrated cohort the logistics beat a mainland commute easily. Its limit is that it cannot diagnose, and it can reinforce a shared misunderstanding.

What free material do the exam boards actually publish?+

Syllabus and subject guide documents setting out exactly what is examinable, assessment criteria with their mark allocations in the IB's case, past papers, mark schemes, and published timetables for each series. Most students reach the end of a two-year course without reading a mark scheme for their own specification. We do not reproduce or distribute any of it, because it belongs to the boards: read it on their own sites and get it through your school.

Is a tuition centre group class in Abu Dhabi worth the journey from Yas Island?+

It depends what you want from it. It is cheaper per hour and genuinely useful for structured content coverage. What it cannot do is match one student's syllabus code, route or tier, because the room contains several entries, and it cannot diagnose an individual's procedural error. For a Yas Island household the real cost is a second journey to central Abu Dhabi at the hour a student should be eating, on top of a school run that may already have taken an hour.

What does one-to-one tuition do that nothing cheaper can?+

Four things. It watches an individual student work, which is how a procedural failure in the middle of a method is actually found. It explains published assessment criteria and gives feedback on that student's own draft. It marks that student's own script with them, question by question. And it covers scarce specifications the local market does not teach at all. Outside those four cases, something higher up the list usually does the job for less.

Is in-home tuition on Yas Island one of the six options IB Gram offers?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE, including Yas Island; in-home tutoring is a service we run only in India. Abu Dhabi families are taught one-to-one over live video. On a comparison page that matters because in-home tuition is the only one of the six options where proximity helps at all, and on this island it has the thinnest pool and the largest travel component in its rate.

How should I compare two tutors when the rates are similar?+

Ask five questions. Which route, level, board, code or tier do you teach most weeks? What will you look for in a marked script? Which board's or guide's materials will we use in session one? What is the end point of this block? And do you hold the MoHRE private tuition work permit? A specialist answers all five crisply. The published rate bands overlap completely, so the figure attached tells you almost nothing about which you are speaking to.

Why does the end point of a block matter so much?+

Because an arrangement without one becomes a subscription, and that is the largest avoidable cost in this market. A diagnostic is one session. A repair block is three to six and ends with a timed set on the problem it fixed. An assessment block ends at the school's internal deadline. A paper block ends at the series. Agreeing the end at the start also forces a tutor to say what success looks like, which is a useful thing to have in writing.

Do island event weekends really matter for a tutoring plan?+

For anything that depends on travel, yes. Yas Island hosts large-scale events, including the Grand Prix weekend at the end of the first term, and access and road management during those periods change what a weekday evening looks like for residents. A twelve-week plan that loses two weeks to traffic has lost a sixth of its value for reasons unconnected to teaching. A lesson delivered over live video is unaffected, as is school provision and self-study.

What can a tutor do on a Diploma internal assessment that the school cannot?+

Not more, but differently. The school's subject teacher and Extended Essay supervisor carry accountability and know what previous cohorts submitted, which is valuable and free. A tutor adds individual time on criterion literacy and feedback on a specific draft, which a teacher with a full class has less of. Both work within the same boundary: no tutor and no teacher may write the work, rewrite it into its final form or supply text for submission.

Should I buy a diagnostic session before committing to a block?+

It is usually the cheapest useful purchase available. One session, one marked paper, one written output: named topics rather than general weaknesses, plus an honest estimate of the hours a repair needs. Some families take that list to the school and use its free provision instead, which is a legitimate outcome. The list is worth having whatever you then do with it, because it converts a vague worry into something actionable.

Is self-study realistic for a Year 11 or Diploma student?+

For part of the job, yes, and it is the part most often outsourced unnecessarily. A capable student can work through past papers from their own specification, read the syllabus to see what is examinable, and read the criteria they are being marked against. What they cannot do alone is reliably tell why a mark was lost, which is where a paid hour earns its place. Teaching a student to read a mark scheme critically makes all their solo practice worth more.

What should a Yas Island family do first, this week?+

Two things that cost nothing. Email the school and ask what departmental support exists for the subject in question and whether the class teacher can see your child about one specific thing. And find your child's last marked paper and look at it: are the losses clustered in two or three topics, or scattered as single marks across the script, and were the final questions attempted? Those two steps determine which of the six options you actually need.

Work down the list, not up it

Ask the school what it already provides, look at one marked script properly, point your child at the board's own published materials, and see whether three classmates will test each other once a week. If a specific, diagnosed problem survives all of that, then buy a bounded block of one-to-one with a stated end point. IB Gram teaches Abu Dhabi students one-to-one over live video for exactly those cases, names the cases where we are the wrong answer, and starts with a free trial lesson and no card details taken.
