Cambridge IGCSE English First Language 0500 Tutor in Abu Dhabi

A Cambridge IGCSE English First Language 0500 tutor in Abu Dhabi works on one thing above all others: the marked script. English grades do not move because a student reads more. They move when somebody shows the candidate, in their own handwriting, which sixteen marks were available for style and accuracy and where they went. Sessions are one-to-one over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time, and a trial lesson comes first.

  • Every composition returned with band-level marks, not a letter grade
  • Summary and writer's effects drilled as separate, measurable skills
  • Reading and writing marks logged apart so the weaker half is visible
  • Redrafts stay the student's own work, always

IB & IGCSE in Abu Dhabi

An English grade moves when the marking gets specific, and not before

English as a First Language is the subject where Abu Dhabi parents most often feel they are paying for something they cannot inspect. A maths script has right answers on it. A 0500 composition comes back with a mark, perhaps a comment about expression, and no visible mechanism connecting the two. Families then do the only thing available to them, which is to buy more reading and more practice, and six months later the grade has moved by a mark or two. The money was not wasted exactly, but almost none of it was aimed at anything in particular, and nobody in the house can say what the next six months should be spent on either.

The mechanism exists, and it is public. Each of the two written papers carries eighty marks and half the qualification. The composition tasks are marked on two separate scales: twenty-four marks for content and structure, sixteen marks for style and accuracy. Directed writing is marked for reading as well as for writing, which is why a candidate who writes beautifully but ignores half the source material cannot reach the top band. Once a student knows which of those scales is costing them, the work becomes concrete.

That is the whole argument for this page. A Cambridge IGCSE English First Language 0500 tutor in Abu Dhabi should hand you a dated script every week with the mark split written on it, and a second script eight weeks later on a comparable task. You read the two. If content and structure has moved from the middle band to the upper band while style and accuracy has not, you know precisely what the next month is for. Nothing about that process requires trusting anybody's judgement, including the tutor's.

Sessions are delivered one-to-one over live video. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are offered only in India. For written English the online format is genuinely better rather than merely acceptable, because the work is a document. A tutor and a student can look at the same paragraph on a shared screen, highlight the four sentences that all open the same way, and rewrite one of them together while both watch the sentence change. That is harder to do sitting side by side over a single sheet of paper.

It also widens the pool, which matters more in English than in most subjects. The useful 0500 tutor is somebody who has marked a great many scripts and can tell you, within a paragraph, whether a candidate's problem is range of vocabulary, control of sentence structure, paragraph shape or simply not answering the question. The number of people in Abu Dhabi who can do that and who are free at 17:00 on a Tuesday is small. Over video it is a roster rather than a radius.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

0500 sits at the end of a long run-up and the start of another. These are the stages where English support changes something, and what the hour is actually spent on at each one.

Y9Ages 13-14 · Year 9

Year 9, before the English route is set

The year a school decides whether a student will sit First Language or Second Language English. The deciding evidence should be a piece of extended writing marked against the 0500 criteria rather than a general impression of fluency. Work at this stage is paragraph architecture, sentence variety and the habit of planning before writing, all of which are cheaper to install now than to retrofit in Year 11.

Abu Dhabi cohorts are highly multilingual, and a confident English speaker is not automatically a First Language candidate. The distinction Cambridge draws is about written range and control, not about conversation, and a school that decides on fluency alone sometimes places a student on a route that caps them.

Y10Ages 14-15 · Year 10

Year 10, building the two papers separately

The best year for skill isolation. A Year 10 student can spend four weeks on summary alone, then four on writer's effects, then a block on descriptive writing, and finish each block with a marked task on that one skill. Treating the papers as a single blur called 'English' is why Year 10 often produces no measurable movement despite a full year of lessons.

Term structure in the emirate puts a long break in the middle of the year and a Ramadan term with compressed days near the end. A single short weekly session held through those weeks keeps the writing habit alive, which matters far more in English than in a content subject.

Y11Ages 15-16 · Year 11

Year 11, the June series and the mark split

Work becomes production under time. Full papers, strictly timed, with each composition marked on both scales and the lost marks attributed to a cause: ran out of time, drifted off the task, narrow sentence range, punctuation errors repeating. Those four causes need four different responses, and a term spent on general practice addresses none of them in particular.

Candidates in Abu Dhabi sit the June series with final entries submitted months earlier. The speaking and listening component is separately endorsed and reported apart from the grade, so a family worried about an oral test should confirm with the school what is actually being entered.

ASAges 16-18 · Years 12-13

After 0500: A-Level English and other literate subjects

A 0500 grade is a gateway to AS and A-Level English Language or Literature, and a prerequisite in effect for subjects that are assessed through extended writing. The transition work is argument structure and evidence handling rather than more description, and students who learned to plan in Year 10 find it a short step.

For university admission in the UAE and abroad, English attainment is usually examined twice: once through the school certificate and once through a separate language test. Treat the 0500 grade and an IELTS or TOEFL score as two different pieces of work with different preparation.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The Cambridge IGCSE subjects most often taken alongside 0500 in Abu Dhabi schools, with the part of each that draws on the same writing skill.

Cambridge IGCSE English Literature (0475)

Single tier

The closest neighbour. Literature rewards close reading of language, which is the same muscle as the writer's effects question in 0500. Students taking both should be shown explicitly that the two papers want different outputs from the same observation.

Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language (0510)

Single tier

The alternative English route. 0510 is assessed through structured exercises and a listening paper rather than extended composition. The choice between the two is one of the more consequential decisions in a bilingual Abu Dhabi household.

Cambridge IGCSE History (0470)

Single tier

Source-based essays with a strict demand for evidence. History students often bring strong paragraph discipline to 0500 and lose marks instead on descriptive range, which is a useful thing for a tutor to know in week one.

Cambridge IGCSE Geography (0460)

Single tier

Rewards precise description of data and process. Geography candidates tend to handle the summary question well because they are used to compressing information, and need more work on the imaginative writing tasks.

Cambridge IGCSE Economics (0455)

Single tier

Built on defined terms used exactly. Economics students write tightly and often too tightly for a 0500 composition, where variety of sentence structure carries real marks on the style and accuracy scale.

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics (0580)

Core and Extended

No shared content, but a shared scheduling problem. Maths and English both reward daily short practice, and a Year 11 timetable that gives all its evening hours to maths is the most common reason an English grade stalls.

Cambridge IGCSE Business Studies (0450)

Single tier

Case-study answers with a clear structure and a recommendation. Business candidates are often good at directed writing because they already write to an audience and a purpose, which is exactly what that task is marked on.

Cambridge IGCSE Global Perspectives (0457)

Single tier

Research, argument and reflective writing. It builds the planning habit that 0500 rewards, and the written components are a useful place to practise the same paragraph discipline under lower stakes.

Cambridge IGCSE Arabic as a First Language (0508)

Single tier

Taken by many Abu Dhabi students alongside 0500. Carrying two first-language literacies at once is demanding and real, and a revision plan that ignores the Arabic paper is a plan the student will quietly abandon.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes 0500 support usually takes. All are one-to-one over live video, and all end with a marked piece of writing you keep.

Skill-isolation blocks

Four-week blocks on one skill at a time: summary, then writer's effects, then directed writing, then descriptive and narrative composition. Each block ends with a marked task on that skill alone, so movement is attributable. This is the format that suits Year 10 and the first half of Year 11, where there is still time to build rather than patch.

  • One skill per block, with a measurable end task
  • Marks reported on the relevant scale, not as a single grade
  • Errors from the block re-tested two blocks later
  • Reading and writing marks kept in separate columns

Composition clinic

A shorter, writing-only arrangement for students whose reading marks are already solid. Each week the student submits one composition written under time, and the session is spent reading it against the two mark scales, rewriting two paragraphs live on screen, and setting the next task to attack the same weakness again.

  • One timed composition a week, written independently
  • Content and structure marked apart from style and accuracy
  • Two paragraphs rebuilt live, with the student typing
  • A running list of repeating punctuation and tense errors

Timed-paper run-in

Eight to twelve weeks before a series the work becomes whole papers under exam conditions. Both papers are sat, marked strictly, and the lost marks attributed by cause rather than by question. Teaching happens only where a script shows it is needed, which is a different use of an hour from revising everything once more.

  • Full papers to time, including the reading paper's summary
  • Lost marks attributed to cause: task drift, range, control, timing
  • Time-allocation note on every paper
  • Final fortnight spent on the two highest-yield habits only

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Abu Dhabi

01

What a 0500 tutor actually changes

A Cambridge IGCSE English First Language 0500 tutor changes the specificity of the feedback a student receives. That is the product. Lessons run one-to-one over live video to Abu Dhabi families, each session produces a marked piece of writing with the mark split written on it, and the trial lesson is free.

The reason specificity is the product rather than a feature of it is that English teachers in school are marking thirty scripts a week against a deadline. A class teacher can tell a student their expression needs work and be entirely correct. What they usually cannot do, with thirty scripts and a lesson to plan, is sit with one candidate for forty minutes and rebuild two paragraphs with them while they watch the sentence shapes change. That is the gap a tutor fills, and it is a narrow gap rather than a replacement for the class.

In practice the first session produces a baseline. The student writes one composition under time, on camera, to a task drawn from past Cambridge material. It is marked on both scales with the band written on the script and a short reason for each. The commonest outcome is a student sitting in the middle band for content and structure and the lower middle for style and accuracy, with the whole gap explained by three habits: every sentence the same length, dialogue punctuated inconsistently, and a plan that was never written so the piece has no shape.

Those three habits are fixable in weeks. What is not fixable in weeks is a candidate who does not read the task carefully, because that is a reading failure wearing a writing costume, and it will cost marks on the reading paper too. A tutor who starts with a marked baseline finds out which of those two situations you are in during the first fortnight rather than in March.

02

Two papers, eighty marks each, and what each one is really testing

0500 is assessed by two written papers of two hours each, carrying eighty marks apiece and half the qualification each. The reading paper asks a candidate to work with unseen texts: short comprehension responses, an analysis of how the writer uses language to achieve effects, an extended response that requires reading the material closely and writing in a specified form, and a summary question that is marked for reading and for writing separately.

The writing paper has two halves. Directed writing asks the candidate to transform source material into a specified form for a specified audience, and it is marked for reading as well as writing, which is why a stylish piece that ignores half the material cannot reach the top band. The composition section asks for one piece, descriptive or narrative, marked out of forty: twenty-four marks for content and structure, sixteen for style and accuracy. That split is the single most useful number in the whole syllabus for a parent to know.

There is also a speaking and listening component, and in most Abu Dhabi schools it is separately endorsed, meaning it is reported alongside the grade rather than inside it. Some centres offer a coursework portfolio route in place of one examined component. Which arrangement your child is entered for changes what the final term should contain, and it is a question for the school's exams officer rather than for a tutor.

Confirm the component structure against the syllabus for your child's exam year on the Cambridge International site. Syllabuses are revised on a cycle, and a revision guide bought two years ago may describe a paper that no longer exists in that form.

03

The reading paper: three different jobs that look like one

  • Retrieval: use the text's own detail, not a loose paraphrase
  • Effects: finish 'which makes the reader...' on every point
  • Summary: underline the focus, number the points, then write
  • Never borrow the passage's phrasing in a summary
  • Report the three question types as three separate scores

Candidates treat the reading paper as a single activity called reading, and the mark scheme treats it as three distinct jobs. Retrieval questions want the text's own specifics, and an answer that paraphrases loosely loses marks that were sitting in plain sight. The writer's effects question wants the effect, not the label: naming a metaphor earns nothing on its own, while explaining what the comparison makes the reader picture or feel earns the mark. The summary wants ruthless selection, in the candidate's own words, inside a focus the question has defined.

Summary is the most teachable of the three and the most commonly neglected. The reliable method is mechanical: underline the focus in the question, go through the text marking only points that answer that focus, number them, then write in continuous prose without borrowing the text's phrasing. Students who do this score consistently. Students who read the passage once and then write a general account of it score in the middle of the range no matter how well they write.

Writer's effects improves fastest when a student is made to finish the sentence 'which makes the reader...' every single time. It feels mechanical for a fortnight and then becomes the way they read. The common failure is a candidate with a wide vocabulary who identifies five devices in a paragraph and explains none of them; the mark scheme pays for the explanation, and a quieter answer that unpacks two images properly beats a confident list of six.

All three jobs are measurable separately, which is why a marked script should report them separately. A student whose summary marks are strong and whose effects marks are weak does not have a reading problem in general. They have one question type to fix, and four weeks is usually enough.

04

Sixteen marks for style and accuracy, and how they leak

The composition is marked out of forty on two scales, and the smaller scale is where most Abu Dhabi candidates lose a grade. Twenty-four marks cover content and structure: whether the piece has a shape, whether the description builds, whether the narrative has a controlled arc rather than a list of events. Sixteen marks cover style and accuracy: range and precision of vocabulary, variety of sentence structure, control of punctuation, and consistency of tense and person.

Style and accuracy leaks quietly. A candidate writes a piece with genuine atmosphere, then undercuts it with twenty consecutive sentences of similar length, dialogue punctuated three different ways in two pages, and a drift from past tense into present halfway down the second side. None of that is a vocabulary problem, and none of it is fixed by reading more books. It is fixed by rewriting four paragraphs under supervision, four weeks running, until the habits change.

Content and structure leaks differently. The commonest cause is no plan. A planned descriptive piece moves deliberately through a small number of focal points; an unplanned one wanders and repeats. Five minutes of planning is worth more marks than five minutes of extra writing, and students resist this until they see two marked scripts side by side, one planned and one not, with the band difference written on them.

Directed writing has a third failure mode that belongs only to it: the candidate writes well and uses half the source material. Because that task is marked for reading as well as writing, ignoring material caps the mark regardless of quality. The fix is a two-minute source audit before writing, ticking each point as it is used.

05

The redraft cycle, and the line a tutor does not cross

Redrafting is how writing improves, and it is also where tutoring in this subject can go badly wrong. The useful version is this: the student writes, the tutor marks against the criteria, the two of them rebuild one or two paragraphs together on screen with the student typing, and then the student rewrites the rest alone. The student's hands stay on the keyboard. What they learn is a repeatable move, not a better paragraph.

The version to refuse is a tutor who improves the piece for the candidate. It produces a better script and a student who has learned nothing, and for any component that is assessed and submitted it is an integrity breach that puts the qualification itself at risk. Everything submitted has to be the candidate's own work. Where a school runs the coursework portfolio route, that rule is not advisory.

Parents can audit this easily. Ask to see the marked script and ask the student to explain, without help, why one sentence was changed. A student who has been coached can answer. A student whose work was rewritten for them cannot, and the gap shows up within a sentence or two. This market contains sites that sell completed assessed work outright, and a family who knows the boundary is in a much better position to spot one.

The same boundary makes feedback more useful rather than less. A tutor who cannot hand over improved sentences has to explain the principle instead, and the explanation is the transferable part. Eight weeks of that produces a student who marks their own first draft before anybody else sees it, which is the actual goal.

06

0500 or 0510: the decision a bilingual Abu Dhabi household should make on evidence

A large share of Abu Dhabi students speak English confidently and write it at a level that would be marked differently on the two syllabuses. First Language English assesses extended composition and close analysis of unseen text. Second Language English assesses structured reading and writing exercises plus a listening paper, and reports speaking separately. They are different qualifications with different demands, and the choice is sometimes made on how a child sounds in conversation.

The evidence that should decide it is a piece of extended writing, marked against the 0500 criteria, with the band written on it. A student who sits comfortably in the middle band for content and structure on an unseen descriptive task is a First Language candidate. A student whose ideas are strong but whose sentence control is still developing may be better served, and better rewarded, by the Second Language route, where the writing tasks are shorter and more defined.

Two practical considerations matter beyond the marks. Universities and employers read the two qualifications differently, and some sixth-form English courses prefer the First Language route as preparation. Against that, a grade ceiling reached on the wrong syllabus is a real cost, and a student grinding through two years of a paper they cannot access loses confidence in the subject as well as marks.

Whichever way it goes, the decision belongs to the school and the family together, and the useful contribution a tutor makes is the marked evidence rather than a view. Ask for it before the option block is signed off, not after the first mock.

07

What the marked-script record looks like over a term

The point of keeping every script is that English progress is invisible week to week and obvious across a term. A single composition is noisy: a student can write their best piece of the year on a task that happened to suit them. Six scripts on comparable tasks, marked on the same two scales, are not noisy. They show a trend, and the trend is the thing you are paying for.

The table below is the shape of that record for a Year 11 candidate who arrived in the middle of the range. It is organised by skill rather than by week, because that is how the marks are reported and how a parent can read it. Each row carries a starting point, what the marking targets, and what a term of it typically changes. These are patterns from marking, not a promise about any individual student, and no tutor can commit to a grade.

Two things in that record surprise families. The first is that style and accuracy usually moves before content and structure, because punctuation and sentence variety are habits while structure is a way of thinking. The second is that reading marks often move fastest of all, because summary technique is mechanical and a student who adopts the method picks the marks up almost immediately.

If after six scripts nothing has moved on any row, that is information worth acting on. It may mean the tutor is wrong for this student, or that the real problem is how much independent writing is happening between sessions, which no tutor can do for them. Either way a family holding six dated scripts can make that call themselves.

ADEK, Arabic alongside English, and the equivalency count

Private schools in Abu Dhabi are supervised by the Department of Education and Knowledge, which handles licensing and accreditation in the emirate. The equivalent authorities elsewhere are the Knowledge and Human Development Authority in Dubai, the Sharjah Private Education Authority, the Department of Knowledge in Ras Al Khaimah, and the federal Ministry of Education for Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah. For an English-subject question this matters mainly because inspection reports and curriculum approvals are emirate-level documents, so Abu Dhabi families should read Abu Dhabi sources.

Alongside the Cambridge options every private-school student carries the mandatory UAE subjects. The federal position is that private schools are not obliged to follow a specific curriculum beyond Arabic language, social studies and Islamic studies, while adhering to the Ministry's general regulations. A 0500 candidate is therefore often writing at length in two languages in the same year, and the content of those mandatory subjects is prescribed, so any material used has to come from the school.

For university equivalency on the British track the published rule is five accredited subjects at GCSE or IGCSE with a grade of no less than E or grade 3, plus one Advanced Level subject at no less than E or two Advanced Subsidiary subjects at the same grade. Arabic and Islamic education are not counted among the five. English is in practice one of the five for nearly every candidate, which makes the 0500 grade load-bearing in a way a student rarely appreciates in Year 10.

On the American track the same published guidance requires separate evidence of English proficiency: a score of 5 in the IELTS academic test, 61 in the TOEFL internet-based test, or 450 in the reading and writing section of the SAT. That is a different test with different preparation from 0500, and conflating the two is a common and expensive mistake. IB Gram holds no accreditation or partnership with ADEK, Cambridge International or the Ministry of Education, performs no part of the equivalency process, and no family should be told that tutoring is required for it.

Where we tutor

Abu Dhabi communities 0500 families log in from

Delivery is online, so geography matters only for timing and for which schools a family is choosing between. These are the areas English enquiries come from and what shapes the evening.

Al Mushrif and Al Bateen

Close to some of the longest-established British-curriculum schools in the emirate, with settled cohorts and predictable teaching order. English sessions here can run just ahead of the school's own sequence, so classwork becomes a second pass.

Al Reem Island

High-rise living with short school runs, which makes a 16:00 Gulf Standard Time start workable. The common constraint is a crowded activity schedule rather than traffic, so a fixed weekly slot protects the writing habit better than ad-hoc booking.

Saadiyat Island

Low-rise community with some long off-island commutes. A 17:00 start is realistic. Saadiyat Island IGCSE English tuition often runs as one weekday skills session plus a longer weekend slot for a full timed paper.

Khalifa City

The largest source of English enquiries on the mainland and a long drive from the island schools. Two shorter weekday sessions tend to produce more written work than one late evening block after a 40-minute journey.

Al Raha and Al Raha Gardens

Short commutes to several large schools, so early slots hold through the year. This corridor has a high proportion of mid-course arrivals, who often need the 0500 criteria explained from scratch rather than revised.

Yas Island and West Yas

Newer cohorts with students arriving from a range of curricula. A student who wrote American-style five-paragraph essays last year is not prepared for the directed writing task, and the gap shows up immediately on a marked script.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City and Al Reef

Spread-out mainland communities where a drive to a tuition centre can take as long as a lesson. Online delivery removes the journey, which is why enquiries from here have grown fastest in the past two years.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send one piece of recent writing

The quickest start is a photograph of a marked school composition and the mark it received. That single document tells a specialist more than a phone call does, because the band and the teacher's annotations usually show straight away whether the issue is structure, control or task comprehension.

  2. 02

Take the trial lesson, which is free

One full session at no cost, no card details required and no obligation afterwards, limited to one per student. It is spent as a working lesson: one timed task set and marked, so a dated script exists before any payment is discussed.

  3. 03

Agree the two scales to target

The plan names which scale is being attacked first and why: content and structure, style and accuracy, or the reading marks on the directed writing task. Targeting both scales at once in week one is how English tutoring becomes general and stops producing measurable movement.

  4. 04

One marked piece of writing a week

Every week produces a dated script with the band on each scale and a short reason for the lost marks. The student keeps the script. A running error list tracks the two or three habits currently costing the most, and those are the ones drilled.

  5. 05

Rebuild paragraphs with the student typing

Two paragraphs per session are rebuilt live on a shared screen, with the student at the keyboard. The tutor explains the principle and the student applies it. Nothing is rewritten for the candidate, because the transferable part is the move, not the sentence.

  6. 06

Review the trend at six scripts

After six comparable pieces the record is read as a whole. If nothing has moved on any scale, the conversation is about changing tutor or changing the amount of independent writing, not about booking more hours at the same rate.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Marks reported on the right scales

Compositions come back with content and structure marked apart from style and accuracy, because those two numbers imply completely different work. A single grade out of forty tells a parent nothing they can act on and is the main reason English tutoring feels unaccountable.

The student's words stay theirs

Paragraphs are rebuilt with the student typing and the tutor explaining. Nothing submitted is written for the candidate. In a market where completed assessed work is openly sold, drawing that line explicitly is a difference worth asking any tutor about.

Specialists chosen by marking experience

The useful 0500 tutor is somebody who has read a great many scripts and can diagnose from a paragraph. Online delivery means an Abu Dhabi family is choosing from a roster rather than from whoever is a short drive from Al Raha.

Skills isolated so progress is attributable

Summary, writer's effects, directed writing and composition are taught in blocks with an end task each. When a mark moves you know which block moved it, which is impossible when every session covers a bit of everything.

Honest about the route decision

Where a marked baseline suggests the Second Language syllabus fits a student better, you will be told, even though it means a different course. A capped candidate grinding through the wrong paper for two years is the worst outcome available.

Timed for the Abu Dhabi evening

Slots are set in Gulf Standard Time around the school run, with later or post-Iftar sessions during Ramadan when families ask. Writing done by a tired student straight off a 40-minute drive is writing that teaches nobody anything.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

How is Cambridge IGCSE English as a First Language 0500 marked, and why does the split matter?+

Two written papers of two hours each carry eighty marks apiece and half the qualification each. The reading paper covers comprehension, writer's effects and a summary marked for reading and writing separately. The writing paper has directed writing, also marked for reading, and one composition out of forty: twenty-four marks for content and structure, sixteen for style and accuracy. The split matters because those two numbers imply different work. Structure problems need planning practice; accuracy problems need punctuation and sentence-variety drills. One overall grade hides which you are dealing with.

Why has my child's English grade stayed the same for a year despite extra lessons?+

Usually because the lessons covered everything a little. English has four or five separately assessed skills, and a session that touches summary, effects and composition in an hour moves none of them measurably. The alternative is isolation: four weeks on summary with a marked task at the end, then four weeks on something else. The second reason is feedback that stops at the level of 'improve your expression'. Until a student can see which of the sixteen style and accuracy marks they lost and to which habit, there is nothing specific to change.

What exactly is the writer's effects question looking for?+

The effect on the reader, not the name of the device. A candidate who writes that the author uses a metaphor has earned nothing. One who explains what the comparison makes the reader picture, and how that supports the mood of the passage, has earned the mark. The reliable habit is to finish the sentence 'which makes the reader...' after every quotation. It feels mechanical for a fortnight and then becomes the way the student reads. Two images unpacked properly score better than six devices listed confidently.

Can online lessons really improve written English as well as sitting beside a tutor?+

For writing, the shared screen is an advantage rather than a compromise. The work is a document, so both people can look at the same paragraph, highlight the four sentences that open identically, and rebuild one of them while the student types and watches the shape change. Marked scripts are returned as files that a family keeps and can compare across a term. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE, since home visits are offered only in India, so every Abu Dhabi session runs over live video.

Should my child take First Language or Second Language English?+

Decide it on a marked piece of writing rather than on how fluent your child sounds in conversation. First Language assesses extended composition and close analysis of unseen text; Second Language assesses structured exercises plus a listening paper and reports speaking separately. A student sitting comfortably in the middle band for content and structure on an unseen descriptive task belongs on the First Language route. A student whose ideas are strong but whose sentence control is still developing is often better rewarded on the other one. The school makes the entry; ask for the evidence first.

How much does English tutoring cost in Abu Dhabi?+

Published UAE market rates run roughly AED 45 to 150 an hour for budget or university-student online tutoring, AED 150 to 300 for a qualified subject tutor online, AED 180 to 500 for an in-home visit once travel is priced in, and AED 200 to 450 or more for an IGCSE or A-Level specialist, with premium named tutors quoted higher. Monthly packages advertised in the market include around AED 799 for eight online sessions. Those are providers' own published figures collected in October 2026, not IB Gram's price list; ask about our model on the trial lesson.

My child writes well but keeps getting middling composition marks. What is going on?+

Nine times in ten it is the absence of a plan and uniform sentence rhythm. An unplanned descriptive piece wanders and repeats, which caps the content and structure band however pleasant the prose is. Meanwhile twenty consecutive sentences of similar length and inconsistent dialogue punctuation quietly cost marks on the sixteen-mark accuracy scale. Both are habits rather than deficits, and both respond to four weeks of supervised rewriting. Ask to see two marked scripts, one planned and one not, with the bands written on them; the difference usually ends the argument.

How many marks does the summary question carry and can it be trained quickly?+

The summary is marked for reading and for writing as separate elements within the reading paper, and it is the most trainable thing in the syllabus. The method is mechanical: underline the focus in the question, work through the text marking only the points that answer it, number them, then write continuous prose without borrowing the passage's phrasing. Students who adopt that sequence usually pick up marks within two or three attempts. Students who read once and write a general account stay mid-range however strong their writing is.

What may a tutor do with a piece of writing that will be submitted for assessment?+

Teach, question, mark against the criteria and explain principles. Not write it, not improve the sentences for the candidate, and not edit it to a standard the student could not reach alone. Everything submitted has to be the candidate's own work, and for a coursework route that is a hard rule with the qualification at stake. A fair audit is to ask your child why a particular sentence was changed. A coached student can explain it; a student whose work was rewritten for them cannot.

Is the speaking and listening component part of the 0500 grade?+

In most UAE centres it is separately endorsed, which means it is assessed and reported alongside the grade rather than counted inside it. Arrangements can differ between schools and between syllabus versions, so the only reliable answer for your child is the one from the school's exams officer. It is worth asking early, because families sometimes spend a final term preparing for an oral component that is not contributing to the number on the certificate, while the composition that carries half of one paper goes unpractised.

Does the tutor need a UAE private tuition permit?+

Yes. Private tutoring in the UAE runs on a permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, granted free of charge for two years, and open to registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. The official route is the MoHRE service 'Issuance of a New Work Permit — Private Tutor Licensing', available through the ministry's app, website and e-services. Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule is published.

Does English count towards UAE Ministry of Education equivalency?+

For the British track the published requirement is five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at a grade of no less than E or grade 3, plus one Advanced Level subject at E or two Advanced Subsidiary subjects at the same grade, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from the five. English is in practice one of the five for almost every candidate. The American track additionally requires proof of English proficiency through IELTS 5, TOEFL internet-based 61, or 450 in SAT reading and writing. Verify current requirements through the Ministry before relying on them.

How long before the exams should we start if the mock was disappointing?+

Twelve weeks is comfortable, eight is workable and four is a triage exercise. The reason is sequencing: habits take four weeks to change, and you want two separate blocks plus a run of full timed papers at the end. With four weeks left the only sensible plan is to pick the two highest-yield habits, usually summary method and a written composition plan, and ignore everything else. Starting late is better than not starting, but the honest version of the answer is that the same work in October costs half as much effort.

Can one tutor cover both English and my child's other IGCSE subjects?+

Sometimes, and it is usually a poor trade. English marks move through detailed marking of extended writing against published criteria, which is a specific skill, and a tutor who is comfortable in three subjects is rarely the person who has read several hundred compositions. The practical compromise most families settle on is one English specialist and one tutor for the quantitative subjects. Where a single tutor genuinely covers two subjects well, the marked scripts will show it within six weeks, which is the only evidence worth relying on.

My child joined an Abu Dhabi school mid-course from a different curriculum. What changes?+

The biggest adjustment is usually the directed writing task, which has no equivalent in several other systems. A student trained to write five-paragraph argument essays will produce a competent piece that uses half the source material and ignores the specified form and audience, and the marks will look inexplicable to the family. The first two sessions should be spent on the task requirements themselves rather than on writing quality. Mid-course arrivals are also the group most likely to have never seen the mark criteria, which is a fast fix.

What if the tutor is not the right match for my child?+

Say so and the specialist changes, with the marked scripts and the skill record handed to the next tutor so the work does not restart at week one. English is a subject where personal fit genuinely affects output, because a student has to be willing to show somebody writing they are not confident about. If six comparable scripts show no movement on any scale, that is the point to change something rather than to add hours at the same rate.

Send us one marked composition

The fastest way to find out whether tutoring will help your child's English is to send a photograph of a recent marked composition and the mark it received. A specialist can usually tell from one page whether the problem is structure, control of sentences, or not reading the task properly, and those three need different work. Take the trial lesson, keep the marked script it produces, and compare it with another one eight weeks later. Sessions run one-to-one over live video to Abu Dhabi, timed to Gulf Standard Time around your evening, and the record is yours to read.
