Cambridge IGCSE English Second Language 0510 Tutor in Abu Dhabi

A Cambridge IGCSE English Second Language 0510 tutor in Abu Dhabi has an unusually well-defined job. The reading and writing paper is a fixed sequence of exercises, each with its own marks and its own predictable failure. The listening paper carries a further slice of the grade and gets practised least. Sessions run one-to-one over live video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time, and work through those exercises one at a time. A trial lesson comes first.

  • Each Paper 1 exercise scored and tracked as its own line
  • Listening practised weekly, not left until the final month
  • Writing tasks marked for content and for language separately
  • Register and audience checked on every piece submitted

IB & IGCSE in Abu Dhabi

0510 is the most diagnosable English paper Cambridge sets, and the least diagnosed

English as a Second Language is a structured examination. The reading and writing paper moves through a known sequence of exercise types, each worth a known number of marks, each with a well-documented way of going wrong. The listening paper is a separate component with its own share of the grade. There is almost no mystery in the assessment model, which makes it strange that so many students in Abu Dhabi are preparing for it with general English practice.

A session on 0510 should be able to answer a very specific question: which exercise is costing the most marks? That is answerable. Give a student a past paper under time, mark it, and write the marks for each exercise on their own line. One candidate loses most of their marks on the note-making exercise and almost none on the short reading questions. Another is solid throughout the reading half and drops a third of the available marks across the two writing tasks because the register is wrong. Those two students need entirely different months.

Families searching for a Cambridge IGCSE English Second Language 0510 tutor in Abu Dhabi often describe the problem as confidence. Sometimes it is. Far more often the student speaks English comfortably all day and is losing marks to precision: a formal article written in the voice of a message to a friend, a summary that reproduces the text's own phrasing, a listening answer that gives the right idea in a form the mark scheme cannot accept. None of that is a confidence issue and none of it is fixed by more exposure.

Delivery is one-to-one over live video, scheduled around the Abu Dhabi school run. There are no home visits in the UAE; that part of the service runs only in India, so every lesson here happens on screen. For 0510 that is a straightforward advantage. The listening paper needs audio played, paused, replayed and discussed, which is exactly what a shared screen does well. Writing tasks are documents, so both people can look at the same paragraph and fix the register in place.

The other advantage is who you can reach. The tutor worth having for this syllabus is someone who knows the mark schemes well enough to say why an answer that reads correctly earned nothing. That is a narrow specialism, and the odds of one living fifteen minutes from Khalifa City on a Tuesday evening are poor. Over video the question becomes availability rather than proximity, which is a far easier question to solve in an emirate this spread out.

What follows is written for a parent who wants to know what the hour contains. Each section below takes one part of the examination, says what it rewards, says how candidates lose the marks, and says what a session does about it. If your child has a marked past paper at home, read these alongside it rather than on their own; the per-exercise scores will point you straight at the two sections that matter.

Y9Ages 13-14 · Year 9

Year 9 and the English route decision

The year the school places a student on the First Language or Second Language route. The useful work now is accuracy under time: tenses held consistently across a paragraph, articles and prepositions used correctly, and the ability to change register deliberately. A student who can write the same content twice, once informally and once formally, is already most of the way to the Paper 1 writing marks.

Abu Dhabi cohorts include students for whom English is a second, third or fourth language, and schools place a wide spread onto the same syllabus. A placement made on how a child speaks rather than on a marked piece of written work is the commonest reason a capable student is on the wrong route.

Y10Ages 14-15 · Year 10

Year 10, exercise by exercise

The right year to work through the paper systematically. Two or three weeks on note-making, then on summary, then on the informal writing task, then on the formal one, with a timed attempt at the end of each. This is also when listening practice should become routine, because the component is a skill that decays and cannot be crammed in a fortnight.

The emirate's calendar puts a long break mid-year and a Ramadan term with compressed school days later on. Listening practice survives those gaps better than anything else because it needs twenty minutes and a pair of headphones, which is worth knowing when a family is deciding what to keep going through a holiday.

Y11Ages 15-16 · Year 11

Year 11 and the June series

Full papers under time, marked exercise by exercise, with lost marks attributed to a cause: misread instruction, wrong register, borrowed phrasing, time ran out, or genuinely did not understand the text. Those five causes have five different fixes, and treating them all as 'needs more practice' is why some Year 11 students repeat the same score for six months.

Abu Dhabi centres sit the June series with entries finalised months earlier. Speaking is a separate component and in most schools is separately endorsed for this syllabus, so confirm with the exams officer what is being entered and how it will be reported before planning the final term.

After 0510: sixth form and language tests

A 0510 grade opens sixth-form routes and is read by universities as evidence of English attainment, though many institutions still ask for a separate language test. The transition work is extended academic writing and note-taking from lectures, which the note-making exercise in Paper 1 turns out to have been quietly training all along.

Families in the UAE often discover late that a university wants an IELTS or TOEFL score alongside the school certificate. Treat the language test as separate preparation with its own timeline rather than something the 0510 grade removes the need for.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Subjects commonly taken alongside 0510 in Abu Dhabi schools, and the way each one interacts with English workload or English marks.

Cambridge IGCSE English as a First Language (0500)

Single tier

The alternative route, assessed through extended composition and analysis of unseen text rather than structured exercises. Knowing how differently the two are marked is what makes the route decision rational instead of a guess about fluency.

Cambridge IGCSE Arabic as a First Language (0508)

Single tier

Carried by a large share of Abu Dhabi students at the same time as 0510. Two literacy subjects in one year is a real workload, and a revision plan that pretends otherwise is one the student will quietly stop following.

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics (0580)

Core and Extended

Connected to 0510 through question comprehension. Students who lose maths marks to misread word problems are usually losing 0510 marks to misread instructions, and the underlying habit is the same one.

Cambridge IGCSE Business Studies (0450)

Single tier

Case-study answers written to an audience and purpose, which is the same demand as the formal writing task in Paper 1. Business students often transfer that skill across once somebody points out that it is the same skill.

Cambridge IGCSE Geography (0460)

Single tier

Heavy on describing data concisely, which maps directly onto note-making and summary. Geography candidates tend to arrive with the compression habit already built and need their time spent elsewhere.

Cambridge IGCSE Biology (0610)

Core and Extended

A content subject where marks are lost to imprecise English as often as to imprecise biology. Command words and exact terminology matter in both, and improving one visibly helps the other.

Cambridge IGCSE Economics (0455)

Single tier

Defined terms used exactly, and extended answers built in paragraphs. Economics rewards the same register control that the formal writing task does, which makes the pairing a convenient one to coach together.

Cambridge IGCSE ICT (0417)

Single tier

Largely practical, so it competes less for revision hours than an essay subject would. Useful context when a family is deciding which subjects can afford to lose an evening to English practice.

Cambridge IGCSE Global Perspectives (0457)

Single tier

Research and reflective writing with a defined structure. It gives a student low-stakes practice at writing for a stated purpose, which is the single most transferable habit for the Paper 1 writing tasks.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways 0510 work is usually organised. Each runs one-to-one over live video and each produces marks recorded by exercise rather than as a single grade.

Exercise-by-exercise block

Two to three weeks per exercise type, working through the reading half and then the writing half of Paper 1, with a timed attempt at that exercise closing each block. The marks for each exercise go onto their own line, so when a total moves you can say which exercise moved it. This is the default shape for Year 10 and early Year 11.

  • One exercise type per block, with a timed end task
  • Per-exercise marks recorded on their own line
  • Errors re-tested two blocks later, not reviewed once
  • Listening kept running in parallel throughout

Writing and register clinic

For students whose reading marks are already respectable. Each week they produce the informal task and the formal task under time, and the session is spent on register, audience, structure and the precision of the language. Content marks and language marks are reported separately, because they almost never move together.

  • Both writing tasks produced to time each week
  • Content and language scored apart on every piece
  • Register rewritten live on screen with the student typing
  • A running list of the repeated grammatical slips

Listening and full-paper run-in

The last eight to twelve weeks before a series. Listening sets every week without exception, plus complete reading and writing papers to time, marked exercise by exercise with the lost marks attributed to a cause. Teaching happens only where a paper shows it is needed rather than as a tour of the syllabus.

  • A full listening set every single week
  • Complete Paper 1 attempts under exam timing
  • Lost marks attributed by cause, not by topic
  • Per-section time allocation rehearsed and corrected

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Abu Dhabi

01

What the 0510 syllabus actually asks a candidate to do

Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language is examined through a reading and writing paper and a listening paper, with speaking assessed as a separate component. The reading and writing paper carries the larger share of the grade and runs for two hours. The listening paper is shorter and carries the rest. A 0510 tutor's job is to find which exercise inside those papers is costing marks and work on that one. Lessons are online, one-to-one, with a free trial first.

The reading half of Paper 1 moves through short comprehension responses, a multiple-matching or scanning task, a note-making or note-completion exercise, and a summary. The writing half asks for two pieces: one shorter and informal, typically an email or message to someone the candidate knows, and one longer and more formal, typically an article, report or review for a defined readership. Both writing tasks are marked for content and for language separately.

That structure is the reason this syllabus rewards systematic preparation more than almost any other English qualification. A candidate does not need to be ready for anything; they need to be ready for six specific things. The summary wants selection and rephrasing. The note-making exercise wants accurate extraction under a heading. The informal task wants a natural voice and a complete response to every bullet in the prompt. The formal task wants register, structure and a consistent address to its readership.

Confirm the component structure and timings against the syllabus for your child's exam year on the Cambridge International website. Cambridge revises syllabuses on a cycle and this one has changed shape before, so a revision guide bought second-hand may be preparing a student for a paper that no longer exists.

The listening paper: a real share of the grade, practised last

  • Exact details — numbers, names, times — captured without transcribing
  • Self-corrections by the speaker recognised rather than missed
  • A first pass without notes, a second pass with them
  • Mark scheme shown next to the student's own wording
  • Twenty minutes a week beats a block of practice in April

Listening is the component families forget until it is too late to fix. It carries a meaningful slice of the 0510 grade, it is examined from audio played in the exam room, and it is a perishable skill. A student who has not listened to unfamiliar accented English under time pressure since last year will lose marks on the day for reasons that have nothing to do with their English.

The failure modes are specific. Candidates write an answer that conveys the right idea in a form the mark scheme cannot accept, usually because they have paraphrased a detail that needed to be exact: a number, a name, a time, a single word. They lose the thread when a speaker self-corrects, which recordings do deliberately. They write while listening and miss the next point. They leave multi-speaker sections blank because they could not tell who said what.

Each of those has a drill. Exact-detail capture is trained by playing a clip and asking only for the number, then only for the time, then only for the name, until the student stops trying to transcribe everything. Self-correction is trained by playing clips that contain one and marking only that question. Note-while-listening discipline is trained by banning notes for a first pass, then allowing them. None of this needs an hour; it needs twenty minutes a week for a year.

A shared screen is the natural place for this work. The tutor controls the audio, can replay a four-second window, and can show the student the mark scheme next to their own answer so they can see the difference between right idea and accepted answer. That comparison is the moment most students understand why their listening marks have been stuck.

03

The two writing tasks, and the register problem that costs most

The writing half of Paper 1 is where fluent English speakers in Abu Dhabi most often lose marks they did not expect to lose. The informal task and the formal task are marked for content and for language separately, and the two scores behave independently. A student can cover every prompt point and still score modestly on language, or write with impressive control and lose content marks for ignoring a third of the prompt.

Content marks go first. The informal task usually supplies prompt points, and every one has to be addressed. Candidates read three bullets, respond warmly to two of them, and lose a chunk of the available content marks while feeling the piece went well. A thirty-second audit — tick each bullet in the margin, tick it again after writing — recovers those marks permanently. It is the cheapest single habit in the whole syllabus.

Language marks are a register problem more often than a grammar problem. The formal task has a defined readership: a school magazine, a head teacher, a local newspaper. A candidate who writes it in the voice they would use to a friend has produced good English in the wrong place, and the mark reflects the mismatch. The drill is to decide the readership and the two or three structural features that follow from it before the first sentence rather than after the piece is finished.

Where grammar is genuinely the limiting factor, the errors are usually a small repeating set: articles, prepositions, tense consistency across a paragraph, subject-verb agreement in longer sentences. Four or five recurring slips account for most of the lost language marks in most scripts, and a running error list drilled weekly removes them in a term. A general grammar course does not, because it spends most of its time on things the student already does correctly.

THE TWO 0510 WRITING TASKS — WHAT IS SCORED, AND WHAT A SESSION TARGETS
What is being scoredInformal taskFormal taskWhat the session drills
ContentEvery supplied prompt point addressedCoverage and development of the stated topicA bullet audit before writing and again after
RegisterA natural voice to someone knownA consistent voice to a stated readershipChoose the readership first, then the sentence shapes

04

Where marks go missing for students who speak English all day

  • Approximate answers: right idea, wrong words, no mark
  • Borrowed phrasing in the summary earns nothing
  • Instruction drift: answering the expected question, not the printed one
  • Word limits ignored, which caps otherwise correct answers
  • Precision usually improves faster than range of language

A significant share of 0510 candidates in Abu Dhabi speak English at school, with friends and sometimes at home, and arrive at the paper expecting fluency to carry them. It does not, and the gap between how confident they feel and what they score is the most common reason a family looks for a tutor. The cause is nearly always precision rather than ability.

Three patterns recur. The first is approximate answers: a response that shows the student understood the text but does not contain the specific words the mark scheme requires. The second is borrowed phrasing, particularly in the summary, where lifting the text's own words earns nothing however well selected the points are. The third is instruction drift, where a candidate answers the question they expected from the layout rather than the one printed, which costs marks across the whole reading half.

None of these show up in conversation, which is why schools and parents can both be surprised by a mock result. They show up immediately on a marked paper with per-exercise scores. A student who is strong in conversation and losing a third of their reading marks to approximation is a student whose next eight weeks should be spent on precision drills, not on more reading or more speaking practice.

The reassuring part is that precision responds quickly. Habits like underlining the instruction, counting the words allowed, and checking whether a question wants a phrase or a sentence can be installed in a few weeks. Marked scripts from week two and week eight usually show the reading half moving before the writing half, because precision is faster to fix than range.

05

0510, 0511 and 0500: three codes and one decision

Three Cambridge English codes come up in Abu Dhabi option conversations and families are rarely told how they differ. 0510 is English as a Second Language with speaking reported separately from the grade. 0511 is the same syllabus content with the speaking component counted inside the grade. 0500 is English as a First Language, assessed through extended composition and close analysis of unseen text rather than structured exercises.

The decision between the Second Language and First Language routes should rest on a marked piece of written work, not on how a child sounds. A student who writes with control and range on an unseen descriptive task is a First Language candidate. A student whose ideas are strong but whose sentence control is still settling will usually score better, and learn more, on the structured route where tasks are shorter and more defined.

The choice between 0510 and 0511 is narrower and belongs to the school, since it determines how speaking is reported. For a confident speaker whose writing lags, having speaking counted can help the overall grade. For a student with the reverse profile it can hurt. Either way the family should know which code is being entered, because it changes what the final term should contain.

What should not drive the decision is a belief that one code is viewed as lesser. Universities and employers read these qualifications as evidence of English attainment, and most institutions in the UAE and abroad also ask for a separate language test regardless of which code appears on the certificate. The real cost of the wrong route is two years on a paper a student cannot access, or a capable writer held below their level.

What one 0510 session actually fixes

It is worth being concrete about what an hour buys, because tutoring is sold in hours and almost never described in them. A 0510 session has a single target, taken from the last marked paper. The target is an exercise type, not a skill area. 'Note-making' is a target. 'Reading' is not.

A typical note-making session runs like this. Five minutes reading the last marked attempt and naming what went wrong — in most cases points placed under the wrong heading, or full sentences written where notes were wanted. Fifteen minutes on a worked example with the tutor thinking out loud while the student watches the heading-first method. Twenty minutes of the student doing the same task under time while the tutor stays quiet. Fifteen minutes marking it together against the mark scheme, with the student finding their own errors first. Five minutes setting the task they will do alone before next week.

The part that matters most is the twenty quiet minutes. A session where a tutor talks for fifty minutes produces a student who understood the lesson and cannot perform the exercise. The marks come from performance under time, so time under performance has to be part of the hour. Families who sit in on a trial lesson should be looking for that silence as much as for the explanation.

At the end of the session the exercise score goes on its own line in the record. Over a term those lines form a picture: note-making climbing, summary flat, formal writing climbing slowly, listening steady. That picture is what tells you whether to keep going, change the target, or change the tutor.

07

ADEK, the Arabic parallel, and what an English grade is accepted for

Universities in the UAE and abroad read a Cambridge English qualification as evidence of attainment, and most of them still ask for a separate language test on top. That is the first thing worth saying to a family who assume the 0510 grade settles the admissions question. It contributes; it rarely concludes. The published Ministry of Education guidance for the American track, for example, requires English proficiency evidenced by a score of 5 in the IELTS academic test, 61 in the TOEFL internet-based test, or 450 in the reading and writing section of the SAT.

For the British track the published equivalency rule is five accredited subjects at GCSE or IGCSE with a grade of no less than E or grade 3, plus one Advanced Level subject at no less than E or two Advanced Subsidiary subjects at the same grade. Arabic and Islamic education are not counted among the five. An English qualification is in practice one of the five for nearly every candidate, which makes this grade load-bearing however it is coded. Verify the current rules through the Ministry rather than through a tutoring site, including this one.

In the emirate itself, private schools are supervised by the Department of Education and Knowledge, which handles licensing and accreditation for Abu Dhabi. Dubai has the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, Sharjah has the Sharjah Private Education Authority, Ras Al Khaimah has its Department of Knowledge, and the federal Ministry of Education covers Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah. Abu Dhabi families reading Dubai inspection guidance are reading about a different regulator.

Running alongside the Cambridge options are the mandatory UAE subjects. Private schools are not obliged to follow a specific curriculum beyond Arabic language, social studies and Islamic studies, while adhering to the Ministry's general regulations, and the content of those subjects is prescribed. So a 0510 candidate is frequently building literacy in two languages at once on the same timetable. IB Gram holds no accreditation or partnership from ADEK, the Ministry of Education or Cambridge International, takes no part in the equivalency process, and nobody should suggest tutoring is required for it.

Where we tutor

Abu Dhabi areas 0510 students log in from

Sessions are online, so the area affects two things only: what time a lesson can start, and which schools a family is choosing between. These are the communities enquiries arrive from.

Khalifa City

The largest single source of English as a Second Language enquiries in the emirate, with large mixed cohorts and a long drive from the island. Two shorter weekday sessions beat one long evening block after a 40-minute commute.

Al Reef and Al Shamkha

Spread-out communities where the nearest tuition centre can be a 25-minute drive. Online delivery removes the journey, and families here are among the most likely to add a short midweek listening slot because it costs no travel.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City

Dense mainland housing with a wide mix of home languages and a high proportion of students for whom English is a third language. Register control, rather than vocabulary, is usually the first thing a marked paper shows up here.

Al Reem Island

Short school runs and a 16:00 Gulf Standard Time start that actually holds. The competing pressure is a crowded activity calendar, so a fixed weekly slot protects listening practice better than booking week to week.

Al Mushrif and Al Nahyan

Established mainland neighbourhoods near several long-running schools. Cohorts are settled and teaching order is predictable, which lets a tutor stay a fortnight ahead of the class rather than chasing it.

Yas Island and Al Raha

Newer schools with a steady flow of mid-course arrivals from other curricula. A student who has never seen the Paper 1 exercise sequence needs the paper explained before anything about their English is discussed.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Abu Dhabi

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send a past paper attempt if you have one

A photograph of a marked Paper 1, or even an unmarked attempt, is the most useful thing a family can send. Per-exercise scores tell a specialist in two minutes what a phone call takes half an hour to approximate, and the first session can then start on the right exercise.

  2. 02

Trial lesson at no charge, one per student

A full session free, with no card details taken and no obligation afterwards. Use it as a working lesson rather than a conversation: ask for one exercise to be taught and one timed attempt to be marked, so a script with per-exercise marks exists before anything is paid for.

  3. 03

    Name the target exercise

The plan says which exercise type is being attacked and for how many weeks. 'Improve reading' is not a target. 'Note-making, three weeks, timed attempt in week three' is. Everything outside the target is deliberately left for later.

  4. 04

    Listening starts in week one

A listening set every week from the beginning, not from March. Twenty minutes is enough. This single scheduling decision is the difference between a listening mark that climbs steadily and one that is still where it was in September.

  5. 05

Per-exercise marks recorded on their own line

Scores are logged exercise by exercise so movement is attributable. When a total rises you can say which exercise lifted it, and when it stalls you can say which one is stuck. A single overall grade cannot support either conclusion.

  6. 06

Review the lines after six papers

Six marked attempts make a readable pattern. If every line is flat, the conversation is about the match or about how much independent work is happening between sessions, rather than about booking more hours at the same rate.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Exercise-level diagnosis

The 0510 paper is a fixed sequence of exercises, so marks can be attributed to a specific one rather than to English in general. That is the difference between a plan and a wish, and most families have never been shown their child's scores broken down this way.

Listening is not left until April

A real share of the grade sits in the listening component and it is the first thing most preparation drops. Twenty minutes a week from the start, with the mark scheme shown beside the student's own wording, is what stops that mark being stuck.

Register taught before vocabulary

Fluent speakers lose formal-task marks because the voice is wrong, not because the words are. Deciding the readership before writing the first sentence recovers more marks in this syllabus than any amount of vocabulary building.

Twenty quiet minutes every session

Marks come from performance under time, so a session includes the student working alone while the tutor stays silent. An hour of explanation produces a student who understood the lesson and still cannot do the exercise.

Specialists chosen for mark-scheme knowledge

The useful tutor here can explain why an answer that reads correctly earned nothing. Online delivery means an Abu Dhabi family picks from a roster of people who know these mark schemes rather than from whoever is a short drive away.

Clear about the route decision

If a marked piece of writing suggests the First Language syllabus suits a student better, you will be told, and the reverse too. Two years spent on a paper a candidate cannot access is a worse outcome than a difficult option conversation in Year 9.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

What is in the Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language 0510 exam?+

Two examined papers plus a separate speaking component. The reading and writing paper runs two hours and carries the larger share of the grade; it moves through short reading responses, a scanning or matching task, note-making, a summary, a shorter informal piece of writing and a longer formal one. The listening paper is shorter and carries the remainder. Speaking is assessed separately and in most UAE centres is reported alongside the grade rather than inside it. Confirm the exact structure for your child's exam year on the Cambridge International website.

My child speaks English fluently but keeps scoring in the middle of the range. Why?+

Almost always precision rather than ability. Fluency does not produce the exact words a mark scheme requires, and three patterns recur: approximate answers that show understanding without containing the required detail, summaries that borrow the text's own phrasing and so earn nothing, and answers to the question the candidate expected rather than the one printed. None of this is visible in conversation, which is why a mock result can surprise everybody. All three respond to a few weeks of precision drills on marked papers.

How important is the listening paper and when should we start practising it?+

It carries a real share of the grade and it should start in the first month, not in the spring. Listening is a perishable skill: a student who has not worked with unfamiliar accented English under time since last year will lose marks for reasons unconnected to their English. Twenty minutes a week is enough. The highest-value drills are capturing exact details without trying to transcribe everything, recognising when a speaker self-corrects, and comparing their own wording with the mark scheme's accepted answer.

Our school mentioned 0511 rather than 0510 — does the code change what my child sits?+

The syllabus content and the written papers are the same. The difference is how the speaking component is treated: in 0510 speaking is reported separately from the grade, and in 0511 it is counted inside it. The school decides which code it enters, so ask the exams officer directly. For a confident speaker whose writing lags, having speaking counted can lift the overall grade; for a student with the opposite profile it can pull it down. Either way it changes what the final term of preparation should prioritise.

Can the note-making and summary exercises really be trained, or is it general reading ability?+

They are the two most trainable exercises in the paper. Note-making is a method: read the headings first, work through the text placing each point under the right heading, and write notes rather than sentences. Summary is also a method: underline the focus in the question, mark only the points that answer it, number them, then write in your own words without borrowing the text's phrasing. Students who adopt those sequences usually move within two or three timed attempts, regardless of how much reading they do outside lessons.

Is online tutoring suitable for a listening and speaking subject?+

For listening it is better than the alternative, because the tutor controls the audio, can replay a four-second window and can put the mark scheme on screen next to the student's own answer. Writing tasks are documents, so register can be rewritten in place with the student typing. There are no home visits in the UAE; that service runs only in India, so every Abu Dhabi session happens over live video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time around the school run.

What do tutors charge for IGCSE English support in Abu Dhabi?+

Rates published by UAE providers in October 2026 sit in bands rather than at a single figure. Specialist IGCSE and A-Level tutors are advertised from around AED 200 to 450 an hour and above, qualified subject tutors working online from roughly AED 150 to 300, and budget or university-student online tutoring from about AED 45 to 150. An in-home visit typically costs more once travel is priced in, commonly quoted between AED 180 and 500. Those are other providers' own figures; ask about our model during the trial.

How many prompt points does the informal writing task need me to cover?+

All of them. The task supplies prompt points and the content marks are distributed across them, so a warm, well-written response that addresses two of three loses a meaningful share of the available content score while feeling successful. The fix takes thirty seconds: tick each prompt point in the margin before writing, then tick each one again after finishing. It is the cheapest recoverable mark in the whole syllabus and the one most commonly left on the table by strong candidates.

My child's formal writing gets marked down even though the English is good. What is wrong?+

Usually register. The formal task has a stated readership — a school magazine, a head teacher, a local newspaper — and a piece written in the voice a student would use with a friend is good English in the wrong place. The mark reflects the mismatch rather than the quality. The drill is to decide the readership first, then choose two or three structural features that follow from it, before writing a sentence. Students who do that consistently see the language marks move without their grammar changing at all.

Which grammar should we actually work on?+

Only the errors that appear in your child's own scripts, which is usually a small repeating set: articles, prepositions, tense consistency across a paragraph, and subject-verb agreement in longer sentences. Four or five recurring slips account for most lost language marks in most papers. A running error list drilled weekly clears them within a term. A general grammar course spends most of its time on structures the student already handles correctly, which is why it produces so little movement for the hours involved.

Who is legally allowed to give private English lessons in Abu Dhabi?+

Private tuition in the UAE operates under a permit regime. Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 introduced the private tuition work permit, which is granted free of charge for two years and is open to registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Applications go through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation service for private tutor licensing, via its app, website or e-services. Tutoring without a permit attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published.

Will a 0510 grade be enough for university admission in the UAE?+

It contributes and it rarely concludes. For the British equivalency track the published rule is five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or 3, plus one Advanced Level at E or two Advanced Subsidiary subjects at the same grade, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from the five. The American track separately requires English proficiency evidenced by IELTS 5, TOEFL internet-based 61 or 450 in SAT reading and writing. Check the current requirements with the Ministry and with each university.

My child is also sitting Arabic as a first language. How do we fit both in?+

By accepting the workload rather than planning around it. Private schools in the UAE must cover Arabic language, social studies and Islamic studies alongside the international curriculum they are licensed to teach, and the content of those subjects is prescribed, so the material has to come from the school. A student building literacy in two languages in the same year needs a revision timetable that names both. Plans that quietly assume Arabic will look after itself are the ones students abandon in February.

How late is too late to start if the exams are in June?+

Eight to twelve weeks is a workable run-in; four weeks is triage. The reason is sequencing: each exercise type needs a couple of weeks and a timed attempt, and the paper has six of them, so a short runway forces choices. With a month left the sensible plan is listening every week plus the two exercises with the largest recoverable losses, usually the prompt-point audit on the informal task and summary method. Starting late still helps. Starting in October costs a fraction of the effort for the same movement.

Can we change tutor if it is not working?+

Yes, and the per-exercise record is what makes that call possible. Six marked papers with every exercise scored on its own line either show lines moving or they do not. If nothing has moved, the honest options are a different specialist or an honest conversation about how much independent work is happening between sessions, which no tutor can do on a student's behalf. When the tutor changes, the record and the marked scripts go with the student so the work does not restart from week one.

What happens if no 0510 specialist is free at the time we need?+

You will be told rather than matched quietly with whoever is available. English as a Second Language has a reasonable roster, but the evening slots either side of a Cambridge series fill up, and the tutors who know these mark schemes in detail are a smaller group than the tutors who can teach English. The options are a waiting slot, a different session time, or a specialist whose strength is the reading half when the diagnosis already points there. Guessing at a match helps nobody.

Start from a marked paper, not a description

If you can send one completed Paper 1 attempt, marked or unmarked, a specialist can usually name the exercise costing the most marks before the first lesson begins. That is a better starting point than any description of how your child finds English. Take the free trial, ask for one exercise to be taught and one timed attempt to be marked, and keep the script with its per-exercise scores. Sessions run one-to-one over live video to Abu Dhabi in Gulf Standard Time, listening included from the first week, and the record of which lines are moving belongs to you.
