Best IB Tutor in Abu Dhabi

Every tutoring company in this market says it has the best IB tutor in Abu Dhabi, and none of them can show you the working. So this page does something more useful than making the claim again: it gives you the ten signals that separate a specialist from a generalist, the single question that tests each one, what each AED price tier genuinely buys, and the marketing lines worth walking away from. IB Gram tutors one-to-one over live video, and we would rather you judge us against this rubric than against an adjective.

  • A ten-signal rubric you can use on any provider, including this one
  • What each AED price band actually buys, with the market sources named
  • No star ratings, headcounts or satisfaction percentages anywhere on this site
  • Delivery is one-to-one live video; home visits are an India-only service

The problem with the word

"Best" is not a property a tutor can have. It is a relation between a particular student, a particular subject at a particular level, a particular component where marks are disappearing, and a particular week in a two-year programme. The tutor who is right for a DP1 student whose Chemistry content has gaps is not the tutor who is right for a DP2 student whose Chemistry content is fine and whose Paper 2 extended response scores nothing. Both students have the same subject on their timetable and they need different people.

That is inconvenient for a tutoring market that sells on superlatives, so the market invents proxies instead. The pages competing for this search publish self-asserted star figures - two of them show different numbers for the same rating on the same page, and one shows a five-point figure from twenty reviews next to a claim about a student count in the thousands. Others lean on examiner status that is never evidenced, or on headcounts, or on satisfaction percentages with no sample size, no date and no method. None of that survives a single question.

What does survive questioning is narrow and checkable. Does this person teach the subject at the level my child sits? Have they marked the specific component where the marks are going? Can they read my child's returned script and name the failure pattern rather than describing the subject? Will they say no to something outside their specialism? Do they hold the private tutor permit, which is free and valid for two years from the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation? What happens, concretely, if this match turns out to be wrong in week four?

Abu Dhabi makes the vetting both more necessary and slightly easier. More necessary because the emirate's enrolment runs from the island through the Khalifa City and Al Raha corridor out to Al Reef, Al Samha and Al Shamkha, and a radius search in the outer communities returns a pool small enough that families take whoever answers. Slightly easier because the regulatory picture is clear: the Department of Education and Knowledge supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate, which means it licenses schools and not tutors, so any claim of regulator approval by a tutoring provider is false on its face.

This page is written so that it can be used against us. The rubric is general. The price tiers are the market's, attributed to whoever published them. We publish no rating, no headcount and no success statistic anywhere on this site, because we could not produce the underlying data for any of them. What we do publish is the method - matched on component, documented in writing, with a free trial lesson before any payment and a replacement rather than an argument if the match is wrong - and the rubric below is how you would test whether that is true.

At a glance

  • Ten vetting signals, each with the question that tests it in one sentence
  • What AED 60, AED 200, AED 270 and AED 650 an hour actually buy
  • The trial lesson treated as an audition, with what to watch in the first ten minutes
  • Eight marketing claims that should end a conversation, and the honest version of each
  • What good looks like in five specific subjects, since the answer differs
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Vetting criteria change with the programme, because what a tutor needs to know changes. Primary work needs diagnostic fluency teaching; Middle Years work needs criteria literacy; Diploma work needs component-level assessment experience. A tutor strong in one of the three can be unsuitable in another.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three at Higher Level, each carrying an internal assessment worth a fifth to a third of the grade, plus the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge. The test of a Diploma tutor is component-level: can they name what criterion D of a sciences investigation is asking for, or where partial credit falls across the parts of a Mathematics Paper 3 question. A tutor who answers at subject level has not been assessed yet.

In Abu Dhabi the vetting question with the sharpest edge is availability honesty. Specialist supply across the Gulf tightens between December and February of DP2 because every school runs mocks off the same May session. A provider who promises a Higher Level Physics specialist in January without hesitation is either very well staffed or not telling you something, and asking for a named start date separates the two.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Four criteria per subject on an eight-point scale, converted to a 1-7 grade by the school. The test here is whether the tutor asks to see the school's own criteria descriptors before teaching anything. A Middle Years tutor who works from content alone will produce a student who knows more and scores the same, because the marks are awarded against descriptors the student has never read.

Abu Dhabi MYP families most often arrive with a report card carrying four criteria scores and no translation. The best first session is the one that explains the report, because it tells the parent what to ask the school and tells the student what the next band actually requires. Any tutor who skips that step to get to content is answering a different question from the one you asked.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1 to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

Transdisciplinary inquiry with no external assessment. The test of a Primary tutor is whether they measure anything: reading accuracy and rate on an unseen passage, number facts under time, the structure of a piece of writing. A tutor offering examination preparation to a Primary Years student has misread the programme and should be ruled out on that alone.

Primary enquiries in Abu Dhabi come disproportionately from the newer mainland communities, where a second afternoon car journey is the thing families most want to avoid. Two short online sessions a week outperform one long one at this age, and a provider who insists on an hour because it suits their billing is optimising for themselves.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

What counts as a strong tutor differs by subject, and the differences are specific enough to test. Below is what good looks like in each of the subjects Abu Dhabi families ask about most.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

A strong tutor talks about where partial credit falls inside a multi-part question and reads a Paper 3 stem aloud before touching algebra. A weak one starts teaching calculus. The test question: what do you do differently on Paper 3 from Paper 1?

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

A strong tutor insists on an interpretation sentence after every calculation and knows which university routes state a preference between the two Mathematics courses. A weak one treats the course as easier arithmetic.

Physics

HL and SL

A strong tutor asks to see an extended-response answer and rewrites the student's own sentences against the command term. A weak one offers to reteach mechanics. The test question: show me where this answer stopped earning marks.

Chemistry

HL and SL

A strong tutor checks mechanism conventions - charges, lone pairs, arrow origins - and sign conventions in energetics before anything else, because that is where Higher Level marks concentrate. A weak one begins with bonding theory.

Biology

HL and SL

A strong tutor can state what criterion A of the scientific investigation requires and the difference between describing and justifying a research design. A weak one talks about covering the syllabus.

Economics

HL and SL

A strong tutor separates the calculation from the evaluation and drills the evaluation, because that is the Higher Level Paper 3 ceiling. A weak one teaches diagrams the student can already draw.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

A strong tutor gives an annotation protocol for an unseen text and times it, and knows the Higher Level essay carries its own criteria. A weak one discusses themes, which is the thing students already do instead of analysis.

History

HL and SL

A strong tutor hands over a mark-per-minute budget for the four parts of Paper 1 before discussing content, because overwriting part (a) is a timing fault. A weak one recommends more revision notes.

Psychology

HL and SL

A strong tutor goes straight to the justification of the statistical test in the internal assessment, which is marked on method rather than results. A weak one focuses on learning studies by name.

Arabic A and Arabic B

HL and SL

A strong tutor understands how the Diploma course and the Ministry-mandated Arabic requirement sit in the same week, and prepares the oral components explicitly. This is the one subject where a UAE-based tutor carries a clear advantage.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways to buy a tutor you have vetted, ordered by how much they let you change your mind. The sequence matters more than most families expect, because the cost of a bad match is measured in weeks of a two-year programme rather than in dirhams.

A single trial, then a decision

One free working lesson on the component the marked script identified, with no payment taken beforehand. This is an audition rather than an introduction, and the things worth watching happen in the first ten minutes: whether the tutor has read what you sent, whether they start from the student's work or from their own material, and whether they ask the student to produce something.

  • No payment before the lesson happens
  • Judged on the first ten minutes as much as the last
  • Ends with the tutor stating a six-week plan in plain words
  • A wrong match is replaced, not defended

A short scoped block

Four to eight sessions aimed at one component with a stated end date. This is the shape that tests a tutor properly, because by the end there is a second attempt at the same task type to lay next to the first. It also suits scarce specialists, who can give concentrated hours when they cannot give a weekly slot for a year.

  • One component, one stated finish, a known total
  • Produces a comparison document rather than an impression
  • The shape to use for Higher Level sciences before mocks
  • No rolling commitment when the block ends

A weekly slot after the review

The same hour each week, taken once six weeks of evidence says the match is right. Holding the slot is what keeps a plan alive through a mock timetable and a shortened Ramadan school day, and the written note after each session is what lets a parent keep checking without sitting in the room.

  • Fixed time, set in Gulf Standard Time against your school run
  • A written note after each session that a subject teacher could read
  • An error log that carries forward rather than resetting
  • Reviewed again at the school's mock window

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Abu Dhabi

01

What "best" could honestly mean, and what it usually rests on

Start by separating the claims that could in principle be verified from the ones that could not. "Teaches Higher Level Chemistry and has marked Paper 2 extended response" is checkable in a trial lesson. "Has a current examiner appointment with a named board" is checkable if the appointment can be shown. "Holds the private tutor permit" is checkable, because the permit exists, is free, lasts two years and is issued through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023.

Then there are the claims that cannot be verified and are presented as though they can. A satisfaction percentage with no sample size, no date and no method. A student count. A star figure asserted by the company about itself - and in this market, two competitors publish different star figures for themselves on the same page, which is both a structured-data policy problem for them and a straightforward signal for you. A "top five per cent of tutors" line in one section and a "three per cent" line in another, on the same site.

The third category is the dangerous one: claims that are not merely unverifiable but would be a liability if true. Approval, accreditation or licensing by an education authority or an examination board. A named school presented as a client or partner. A promise of a particular grade. An offer to supply a finished internal assessment, which one researched provider in this market advertises at around AED 3,750 and which would expose the student to a malpractice finding rather than the provider.

The table below sorts the common claims into those three groups. The useful move as a parent is to ask, for each claim on a page, what evidence would settle it - and then to ask for that evidence. Most claims in this market collapse at the first request.

TUTOR CLAIMS SORTED BY WHETHER THEY CAN BE CHECKED
The claimCan it be verified? What would settle itWhat it usually rests on

A ten-signal vetting rubric you can use on anybody

This is the rubric we would want a parent to apply to us. Each signal has one question that tests it, and each question is designed so that a weak answer is obvious without any specialist knowledge. Run it on a phone call in about fifteen minutes.

The signals divide into three groups. Four are about match: subject, level, component, and willingness to decline work outside the specialism. Three are about method: whether they start from the student's own marked work, whether anything is written down, and what the plan's end point is. Three are about trust: the permit, the honesty boundary on coursework, and the exit route if the match fails.

The one most families skip is the fourth. A tutor who says yes to every subject and every level has told you something important. Specialism is defined by what somebody refuses, and a provider that will decline a Visual Arts comparative study rather than staffing it with a generalist is giving you information about how they handle the subjects they do accept. We decline the arts regularly, which is not a selling point so much as evidence that the roster is real.

Apply the rubric before discussing price. The sequence matters, because once a number is on the table the conversation becomes a negotiation and the questions get shorter. Two of the ten are worth asking twice. The start-date question, because availability in principle and availability in January are different answers, and a provider who says immediately for every subject you name has told you they are not checking. And the written-record question, because it is the only signal on the list that keeps working after you have paid: a note you can read each week is a rubric that applies itself. Everything else on this page is a one-off test. That one runs every session.

What each price tier actually buys

Price is a signal, just not the one families assume. It does not rank tutors on quality; it ranks them on scarcity and on what is included. The published 2026 bands in this market are: budget online at AED 45-150, with EdFlik from AED 45-65 and Tutopiya from AED 33-52; qualified subject tutors online at AED 150-300, where Unitors publishes IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200; in-home one-to-one at AED 180-500, with Bestimate showing 180-350; specialists at AED 200-450 and above, with TutorChase publishing AED 270; and premium named tutors at AED 500-650 and more, BartyED publishing AED 650.

At the bottom of the band you are often buying a university student or a school student aged between fifteen and eighteen, both of which are eligible categories for the private tutor permit. That is a legitimate product and the right one for homework supervision. It is the wrong product for Higher Level Chemistry, and the mismatch is the most common expensive mistake in this market, because the rate looks like a saving and the hours produce no marks.

In the middle, AED 150-300 buys syllabus competence and some mark-scheme awareness. At AED 200-450 you should be getting subject-and-level specialism, criterion-level feedback on coursework drafts, and marked past-paper work returned with the mark scheme beside it. If a quote at the top of that band does not include marking between sessions, it is priced as a specialist and delivered as a generalist.

Above AED 500 the premium is almost always reputational, and the most common justification offered is examiner status. We do not describe tutors as examiners for any board unless current status can be shown, and we would not use the label to imply access to marking, grade boundaries or paper content, because no such access exists. If a premium rests on that claim, ask what evidences it. The table sets out what each band should contain so a quote can be checked against it.

WHAT EACH AED BAND SHOULD CONTAIN, 2026 MARKET
AED per hourWho you are usually buyingWhat should be includedWhat it is the wrong tool for
45-150A university student or a junior tutor; EdFlik from 45-65, Tutopiya from 33-52Homework supervision, content revision, company while workingHigher Level work, coursework criteria, component diagnosis
150-300A qualified subject tutor working online; Unitors IB from 200Syllabus coverage, some command-term and mark-scheme workNarrow component problems at Higher Level
180-500An in-home tutor, travel inside the fee; Bestimate 180-350The same teaching plus the journey, usually with a two-hour minimumAnything where the diagnosis is a script rather than a presence
200-450+An IB or IGCSE specialist; TutorChase publishes 270Subject-and-level specialism, criterion feedback, marked papers returnedGeneral homework help, which costs a quarter of this
500-650+A premium named tutor; BartyED publishes 650Whatever the premium is evidenced by - ask before payingAny claim about access to marking, boundaries or paper content
04

The trial lesson as an audition

  • Send the marked script first; the trial then tests a hypothesis rather than gathering history
  • Watch whether the student is asked to produce something in the first five minutes
  • A good trial ends with a named plan and an hour estimate, not with reassurance
  • Ask the student what they got wrong and what to do about it, not whether they liked the tutor

A free trial lesson is the only part of the vetting process that tests teaching rather than claims, and most families waste it by treating it as an introduction. Send the marked script in advance and then watch the first ten minutes, which contain nearly all the information.

Three things should happen. The tutor should refer to the script without being prompted, which proves they read it. They should ask the student to attempt something within the first few minutes, because a tutor who talks for twenty minutes is demonstrating knowledge rather than diagnosing. And they should watch the method rather than wait for the answer - the useful interruption comes at the second line of working, not after the result is wrong.

Two things should not happen. The lesson should not begin with the tutor's own materials, because that means the plan was written before your child was looked at. And it should not end with reassurance. The right ending is a plain statement: here is what I think is happening, here is what I would do in the next six weeks and in what order, and here is roughly how many hours that is. A tutor who cannot say that has not formed a view.

It is also worth asking the student afterwards one specific question rather than whether they liked it: what did you get wrong, and what did the tutor say to do about it? A student who can answer both has been taught. A student who enjoyed the hour and cannot answer either has been entertained, which is a real risk in a format that rewards rapport.

05

Eight claims that should end the conversation

Some marketing is merely overcooked and some is a reason to stop. The difference is whether the claim, if taken at face value, would put your child or your money at risk. These eight are in the second category, and several of them appear on pages currently ranking for this search.

The first is any form of regulator or board approval. Education authorities in the UAE license schools: the Department of Education and Knowledge supervises licensing and accreditation of private schools in Abu Dhabi, the Knowledge and Human Development Authority oversees Dubai's private education quality, and the Sharjah Private Education Authority and Ras Al Khaimah's Department of Knowledge also approve fees, curricula, programmes and assessment methods. In Dubai a separate educational services permit exists for institutes with physical premises. None of this amounts to an approval a tutoring platform can hold, and IB Gram holds none.

The second is any promise of a specific grade, a point total or a percentage improvement, with or without a refund attached. The third is an offer to produce coursework. The fourth is a self-published star figure, particularly where two different numbers appear on the same page. The fifth is a statistic with no sample size, date or method. The sixth is a school presented as a client or partner. The seventh is an unevidenced examiner claim used to imply access to marking or boundaries. The eighth is a non-UAE phone number as the only contact route on a UAE page, which two ranking competitors use and one pairs with a Dubai footer address on an Abu Dhabi page.

The honest versions of all eight exist and are more persuasive, which is the point of the table below.

EIGHT CLAIMS AND THEIR HONEST EQUIVALENTS
The claimWhy it failsThe honest version
Approved or accredited by an education authorityAuthorities license schools, not tutors or platforms"We are independent; here is the tutor's MoHRE permit"

Credentials: what to ask for and what each one proves

Credential lists in tutor profiles are long and mostly inert. A degree in a subject proves subject knowledge and nothing about assessment. A teaching qualification proves training in pedagogy and nothing about this syllabus. An IB workshop certificate proves attendance. What matters for Diploma work is narrower: has this person taught the current subject guide, and have they marked the component in question.

The syllabus-version question is the one nobody asks and it has teeth. The IB revises subject guides on a rolling cycle, and the sciences changed assessment structure in a way that moved the internal assessment to a single scientific investigation marked on four criteria of six marks each. A tutor working from an older guide will teach a coursework structure the student is not being marked against. The question to ask is simply: which subject guide is my child's school teaching, and have you taught that version?

Student-outcome credentials deserve particular care. A tutor who scored highly in their own Diploma knows what it feels like to sit the papers, which is genuinely useful for a student who is panicking, and proves nothing about their ability to diagnose somebody else's script. Treat it as rapport evidence rather than teaching evidence, and test the teaching separately.

Finally, the permit. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated: the permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and is applied for through the ministry's smart app, website and e-services system under the service named Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, with a stated two working day completion time. Eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18 and university students. Tutoring without one attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no schedule of amounts is published, so disregard any figure quoted at you.

07

The reference check almost nobody does

  • Ask what the family received in writing, not whether they were happy
  • Ask what the student stopped getting wrong, and listen for a specific error
  • Ask whether the provider ever recommended fewer hours
  • Fix the six-week review date before any payment is made

Families ask for references and then ask the wrong question. "Were you happy?" produces a yes from almost everybody, because happiness with a tutor correlates with rapport rather than with marks. Three better questions take two minutes and are hard to answer dishonestly.

The first: what did you receive in writing? A parent who can describe session notes, an error log and marked papers returned with the mark scheme is describing a real method. A parent who says the tutor was lovely has told you about the tutor's manner. The second: what did your child stop getting wrong? A specific answer - sign conventions, command-term register, running out of time on Paper 3 - is evidence of diagnosis. A general answer is evidence of a pleasant hour.

The third is the one that reveals the most: did they ever tell you to do less? A provider who has recommended reducing hours in a subject, or stopping a block because the problem was solved, is demonstrating that the plan is aimed at something. A provider who has only ever recommended more has an incentive problem that nothing in a testimonial will show.

Where references are unavailable, the trial lesson plus a six-week review substitutes for them adequately, which is why both exist. The review date should be fixed before the first payment, because families are reliably slow to act on a bad match - they wait, hoping, and in a two-year programme that patience is the real cost.

08

The two tutors to rule out, whatever the rubric says

Two candidates can score well on every signal above and still be the wrong choice. The first is a teacher at your child's own school. Abu Dhabi professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff have been reported as prohibiting teachers from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and the private tuition work permit carries a code of conduct reported to bar serving students affiliated with the tutor's own school. Both are worth verifying against the current policy documents rather than taken from a tutoring page, including this one.

Even setting the rules aside, the arrangement removes the thing you are buying. A tutor's value in the Diploma is an independent reading: of a draft, of a predicted grade, of whether the school's assessment of a student is right. Pay the person who marks the work to improve it and nobody can tell afterwards whether the teaching or the marking moved, and the family has no neutral voice when a predicted grade is disputed.

The second is a provider who will sell you anything. The clearest version is the one offering to produce coursework, which one researched competitor in this market does openly at around AED 3,750 for a completed internal assessment. The IB treats authenticity as a condition of assessment, and the consequence of a finding falls on the student: a subject grade, and in serious cases the Diploma. A provider willing to take that risk with your child's registration is telling you how they weigh your interests against a sale.

The milder version of the same fault is the provider with no refusals - every subject, every level, immediate availability, in every emirate. Specialism is defined by what a roster cannot cover. A straight answer about a gap is worth more than a confident answer about everything.

Where we tutor

Why vetting matters more in some Abu Dhabi communities

The weaker your local pool, the more pressure there is to accept the first tutor who answers. These are the Abu Dhabi communities we work with and what the local supply picture does to a family's bargaining position.

Khalifa City and Shakhbout City

The densest school cluster and the deepest local pool, so families here can afford to be selective and often are. Even so, the Higher Level shortlist inside twenty minutes is small enough that one refusal changes the plan.

Al Raha Gardens and Al Raha Beach

Ten minutes from Khalifa City, with long-established IB continuum provision. Families here are usually vetting on criteria literacy rather than on content, because Middle Years marking is where the confusion starts.

Saadiyat Island

One causeway run, and several post-16 routes available locally. Vetting here often has to cover subject-choice advice as well as teaching, because the Diploma is one option among others.

Al Reem Island

Short runs and an early workable slot, but students are frequently the only Diploma candidate in their building, so a tutor is doing the job a study group would otherwise do.

Al Bateen and Al Khalidiyah

Established island schools nearby. Short distances are offset by pickup and parking, which pushes sessions later and shrinks the set of local tutors willing to take the slot.

Al Shamkha and Al Falah

Thirty to forty minutes each way at the peak. The local pool thins fast, which is exactly when families stop vetting and start accepting. This is where the rubric earns its keep.

Al Reef and Al Samha

The longest afternoon runs and the scarcest local specialists, in precisely the subjects most needed: Higher Level Physics, Chemistry and Economics. Removing distance from the search is the only way to restore choice here.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City and Mussafah

Wide curriculum variety and more group-class provision than elsewhere in the emirate, so vetting has to include a question nobody thinks to ask: how many students are actually in the session?

School ecosystem

The heaviest concentration of international provision in the emirate, including IB continuum schools and British schools running the Diploma alongside A-Levels. Students we support attend schools across this corridor, and their internal assessment deadlines cluster tightly in the same weeks.

  • Raha International School
  • Al Yasmina Academy
  • GEMS American Academy Abu Dhabi
  • The British International School Abu Dhabi
  • Al Mamoura Academy

The island, Saadiyat and Al Reem

Long-established island schools and newer provision nearby, serving families with several post-16 options. Vetting conversations here more often involve a predicted grade the family wants tested against an actual script.

  • Cranleigh Abu Dhabi
  • American Community School of Abu Dhabi
  • Al Bateen Academy
  • Repton School Abu Dhabi
  • Brighton College Abu Dhabi

Schools are named only to describe the provision Abu Dhabi families choose between. IB Gram is independent, holds no affiliation, partnership or endorsement from any school or group named, and no connection to ADEK, the IB or any examination board.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Run the rubric before discussing price

Ten questions, fifteen minutes, on the phone. Subject, level, component, refusals, written record, end point, permit, coursework boundary, exit route, actual start date. Once a number is on the table the conversation becomes a negotiation and the questions get shorter.

  2. 02

    Send the marked script

A photograph of the most recent marked paper or returned coursework draft, with the teacher's comments visible. It converts the trial lesson from an introduction into a test, because a specialist can arrive having already formed a view about which component is leaking marks.

  3. 03

Treat the trial as an audition

Watch the first ten minutes. Does the tutor refer to the script unprompted? Is the student asked to produce something quickly? Does the hour end with a named plan and an hour estimate rather than reassurance? No payment is taken before the trial happens.

  4. 04

Buy a scoped block, not a term

Four to eight sessions on one component with a stated finish. By the end there is a second attempt at the same task type to lay beside the first, which is a measurement rather than an impression, and no rolling commitment if the answer is no.

  5. 05

Review at six weeks, and expect a recommendation to do less

Judge against fresh marked work rather than feelings. A provider who never recommends fewer hours has an incentive problem. If the named error is still recurring, the plan changes or the tutor does, and a replacement is arranged rather than argued about.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

We publish no rating, headcount or success figure

Not because they would be unflattering, but because we could not produce the sample size, date and method for any of them. Two competitors in this market publish conflicting star figures for themselves on a single page, which is a structured-data policy problem for them and a useful signal for you.

Matched on the component, which is testable

A tutor profile here names a subject, a level and the papers or criteria the tutor marks. That is the only part of a profile a trial lesson can check, and it is the unit in which Diploma marks are actually lost and recovered.

We decline work, and say which

The arts are thin in every market we operate in, and we would rather turn down a Visual Arts comparative study than staff it with a generalist. A roster with no refusals is not a roster. Saying no is the clearest evidence available that the yeses mean something.

Online one-to-one, stated up front

Every session for an Abu Dhabi family runs live over video with one tutor and one student. We do not make home visits in Abu Dhabi; in-home tuition is a service we offer only in India. That removes distance from the shortlist, which is the whole point in Al Reef or Al Shamkha.

No regulator claims, because there are none to make

The Department of Education and Knowledge supervises licensing and accreditation of private schools in Abu Dhabi; it does not accredit tutoring providers. We hold no approval from it, from the IB or from any examination board, and we explain the permit regime that does apply instead.

Assessed work stays the student's own

Tutors score criteria, name the capping one and teach the skill. They do not supply prose, choose a research question or submit anything. In a market where completed internal assessments are advertised at around AED 3,750, that boundary is the difference between help and a malpractice finding.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

Can anyone honestly claim to be the best IB tutor in Abu Dhabi?+

No, and the claim is a signal rather than information. "Best" depends on the student, the subject, the level, the specific component losing marks and the week in the two-year programme. A tutor who is ideal for a DP1 student with content gaps in Chemistry is the wrong choice for a DP2 student whose content is sound and whose Paper 2 extended response scores nothing. What can be claimed honestly is narrow and checkable: this person teaches this subject at this level and has marked this component. Everything else is either verifiable with a document or should be treated as marketing.

What qualifications should an IB tutor actually have?+

Two that matter and several that do not. The ones that matter are current teaching of the subject guide your child's school is using, and marking experience in the specific component where marks are disappearing. A degree proves subject knowledge and nothing about IB assessment. A teaching qualification proves pedagogy training and nothing about this syllabus. A workshop certificate proves attendance. The practical question is: which subject guide version are you teaching from, and which paper or criterion have you marked? Add the private tutor permit, which is free, valid two years and issued by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, as the legal baseline.

How do I check a tutor's claim to be an IB or Cambridge examiner?+

Ask for evidence of a current appointment, and ask what the claim is supposed to give your child. The second question is the more revealing one. No examiner has access to unreleased papers, to marking in progress or to future grade boundaries, so an examiner claim used to suggest inside knowledge is misleading regardless of whether the appointment is real. We do not describe tutors as examiners for any board unless current status can be shown, and we do not draw an inference from it. If a premium rate rests on the label, the evidence should arrive before the payment does.

Should I pay more for a tutor who scored very highly in their own IB?+

Treat it as rapport evidence rather than teaching evidence. A tutor who sat these papers recently knows what the pressure feels like and can be genuinely reassuring to a student who is panicking, which has real value. It proves nothing about their ability to read somebody else's script and name why eleven marks left Paper 2. Those are different skills, and the second is the one you are buying. Test it directly: hand over the marked script and ask them to show you where the answer stopped earning marks. A strong candidate does that in two minutes.

What should I be watching for during a trial lesson?+

The first ten minutes. Does the tutor refer to the marked script you sent without being prompted, which proves they read it? Is your child asked to produce something within the first few minutes, rather than listening to twenty minutes of exposition? Does the tutor interrupt at the second line of working rather than waiting for a wrong answer? And does the hour end with a plain statement of what the next six weeks would do, in what order, and roughly how many hours that is? A trial that ends in reassurance has not told you anything.

Is a tutor with twenty years of experience better than one with five?+

Not reliably, and the question that discriminates is about currency rather than duration. The IB revises subject guides on a rolling cycle, and the sciences moved to a single scientific investigation marked on four criteria of six marks each. Someone teaching from an older guide will prepare a coursework structure the student is not being marked against, however long they have been teaching. Ask which subject guide version your child's school is using and whether the tutor has taught that version to a recent cohort. Five years on the current guide beats twenty years on a superseded one.

How do I ask a provider for references without it being awkward?+

Ask for something specific rather than for a testimonial, which makes the request easy to grant and hard to fake. Three questions work: what did you receive in writing; what did your child stop getting wrong; and did the provider ever recommend doing less? The third is the most informative. A provider who has advised reducing hours or stopping a block when the problem was solved has shown that the plan was aimed at something. One who has only ever advised more has an incentive problem that no testimonial will reveal.

Do star ratings on tutoring websites mean anything?+

Self-published ones mean very little, and in this market they are sometimes self-contradictory: two competitor pages we examined show different star figures for themselves on the same page, and one pairs a five-point figure from twenty reviews with a student-count claim in the thousands. Review markup that is not backed by real, countable, attributable reviews breaches Google's structured-data policy and, as a commercial representation in the UAE, raises a consumer-protection question. We publish no rating anywhere on this site, because we could not produce the underlying reviews to match it. Judge the method instead.

What does a good IB tutor do in the first session?+

Start from the student's own work. A strong first session opens with the marked script or the returned coursework draft, identifies where credit was available and not taken, and tests a hypothesis by asking the student to attempt a similar task while the tutor watches the method rather than the answer. It ends with a named plan: this component, this many sessions, in this order, with this practice between. What it should not do is open with the tutor's own materials, which would mean the plan was written before your child was looked at.

Is the most expensive tutor the strongest choice for Higher Level Chemistry?+

Not automatically. Price in this market tracks scarcity and inclusions rather than quality. The band you want for Higher Level Chemistry is AED 200-450 and above, where TutorChase publishes AED 270 and Bestimate shows 200-450+, because that is where subject-and-level specialism and criterion-level coursework feedback sit. Above AED 500 the premium is usually reputational and should be evidenced before it is paid. Below AED 150 you are usually buying a junior tutor, which is appropriate for homework supervision and the wrong tool for organic mechanisms and energetics.

How many tutors should we trial before deciding?+

One, if the rubric was applied properly first. The phone questions are designed to rule out weak candidates before anybody's time is spent, so by the trial stage you should be testing a single plausible match rather than comparing three. Trialling several tutors with the same child has a cost nobody mentions: the student retells the same history three times and starts the real work three weeks later. Where a first match is wrong, the answer is a replacement rather than a parallel audition, and that replacement should be arranged without an argument.

What does good look like in an IB English tutor specifically?+

A protocol rather than a conversation about themes. Strong English A tutors hand a student a fixed procedure for an unseen text - what to mark, in what order, inside ten minutes - and then time it, because Paper 1 is won in the annotation rather than in the writing. They distinguish between what a text says and how the writer constructed the effect, which is the difference between a mid-band and a top-band analysis criterion. At Higher Level they treat the essay as its own assessment with its own criteria and a 1,200 to 1,500 word limit, not as a longer piece of coursework.

Should the tutor be a current schoolteacher?+

A current teacher at a different school is often an excellent choice, because they are teaching the current guide to a live cohort and they set internal deadlines themselves. A teacher at your child's own school is the one option to rule out. Reported Abu Dhabi professional-ethics rules bar private and charter school staff from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, and the ministry permit's code of conduct is reported to bar the same arrangement. Beyond the rules, paying the person who marks the work removes the independent reading that a tutor is there to provide.

The tutor seems strong but my child does not like them. What now?+

Separate two things before deciding. A student who dislikes a tutor because the sessions are uncomfortable is sometimes describing good teaching: being interrupted at the second line of working and asked to rewrite your own sentences is not enjoyable. A student who dislikes a tutor because they cannot follow the explanations is describing a mismatch. The test is the same one used for the trial: ask what they got wrong last session and what they were told to do about it. If both answers come easily, the discomfort is probably the work. If neither does, change the tutor.

How do I tell a specialist from a generalist who says yes to everything?+

Ask what they turn down. A genuine roster has gaps, and the arts - Visual Arts, Music, Theatre, Film - are thin in every market, so a provider claiming immediate cover for a comparative study is describing their marketing rather than their staffing. Then ask for a start date rather than availability in principle: specialist supply across the Gulf tightens between December and February because every school runs mocks off the same session, so "immediately" for every subject in January is not a credible answer. A named date two weeks out is more trustworthy than an instant yes.

Use the rubric on us

The most useful thing on this page is not a claim about our tutors; it is the ten questions. Run them on any provider in Abu Dhabi, including this one, before price comes up. Then send the most recent marked paper or returned coursework draft with the subject and level, and a specialist will read it before a free trial lesson. Watch the first ten minutes. No payment is taken before that lesson happens, every session runs one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time, and a wrong match is replaced rather than defended.
