Best IB Tuition in Abu Dhabi

Searching for the best IB tuition in Abu Dhabi produces a page of providers all claiming the same thing, and no way to check any of it. This page takes a different approach. It sets out what the IB actually assesses in each of the six subject groups, where the marks are genuinely lost, which criterion letters and command terms decide a grade, and nine questions whose answers are checkable. Lessons here are delivered one-to-one over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time.

  • Nine vetting questions with checkable answers, not claims
  • Command terms and criterion letters explained, not mentioned
  • Every regulator named is explained, none is claimed as an endorsement

IB & IGCSE in Abu Dhabi

A ranking is the wrong question; fit to a component is the right one

There is no league table of IB tutors in this emirate, no regulator that scores them, and no published dataset anyone could rank them from. What exists is a search results page of providers describing themselves in identical terms, several of them publishing star ratings they generated themselves. One shows two different review figures on the same page. Another shows a five-out-of-five score from twenty reviews alongside a claimed student body in the thousands. Those are not comparisons; they are decorations.

The question that can actually be answered is narrower and more useful: which tutor is the right fit for the specific component your child is losing marks on. That requires knowing what the component is, which almost no parent is told clearly by a school report. A Diploma student does not fail Physics; they lose marks on Paper 2 extended response because they describe where the command term asks them to explain. A Middle Years student is not weak at Science; their Criterion C is at three while Criterion A is at seven. Those are different problems with different solutions and different prices.

So this page is built as a diagnostic tool rather than a pitch. It explains what each of the six IB subject groups actually assesses and where marks reliably go. It sets out the command terms that decide long-answer marks and what each one instructs a marker to reward. It explains the criterion letters in Middle Years assessment, which is the single most useful thing a parent of a Year 7 to 11 student can learn. And it gives you nine questions to ask any provider, including us, whose answers are documents rather than adjectives.

Abu Dhabi matters to this in one specific way. Diploma cohorts in this emirate are small per school, spread between the island schools, the Khalifa City and Al Raha corridor and the newer mainland communities. A student struggling in a Higher Level subject may be one of very few doing so, with no peer to compare against and sometimes a teacher covering the subject alongside others. That isolation means the diagnosis has to come from the student's own marked work rather than from how they rank in a class of four.

The Department of Education and Knowledge supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate and publishes inspection outcomes, which tells you about a school rather than about a subject. IB Gram holds no approval, accreditation or partnership from ADEK, the IB or any examination board, and claims none. What we do claim is specific: one-to-one sessions over live video, a marked baseline before any hours are quoted, and feedback on coursework that arrives as questions rather than as text. IB Gram does not run home visits in Abu Dhabi; home visiting is a service offered only in India.

At a glance

  • No regulator ranks IB tutors, so any ranking claim is self-generated
  • The useful question is fit to a component, not position in a table
  • Ask for the criterion letter or paper number before buying a subject
  • Nine checkable questions appear later on this page; use them on us too
  • Small Diploma cohorts here mean class position tells you very little
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

What good looks like differs by programme, because the assessment differs. Here is what each stage of the IB actually measures and what a tutor therefore has to know to be useful at it.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1 to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

No external assessment, so judging a tutor here is about whether they can establish a measurable baseline at all. The useful signals are concrete: reading fluency against the same passage at intervals, number facts timed, written work marked against the same success criteria twice. A tutor who cannot describe how progress would be measured is unlikely to be able to show it later.

Abu Dhabi PYP schools run their own inquiry cycles, and the final-year exhibition is where parents see detailed work. The right support there is visible as questions about the student's own line of inquiry, never as supplied text. Mandatory Arabic and Islamic Education run alongside the programme and are frequently the subject families actually need help with.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Four criteria per subject, each marked from zero to eight, with the names differing by subject group. The school converts criterion totals into a reported level using its own published boundaries. A tutor who talks about the subject without referring to criterion letters is working from the content and not from the assessment, which is where the marks actually are.

The step from the Middle Years into the Diploma is where Abu Dhabi families most often look for support, and the step is in written demand rather than in content. A student at Criterion A seven and Criterion D three will find Diploma long-answer questions brutal, and that is diagnosable two years early if anyone looks at the breakdown.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects across six groups, three at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service. Each subject has internally assessed work and external papers with published weightings in its own subject guide. Judging a tutor means asking which paper number and which internal assessment criteria they work on, and expecting a specific answer.

Cohorts per school are small here, so a Higher Level subject may have very few students and limited internal comparison. The consequence is that a school report gives you a position in a group of four rather than a diagnosis, and the marked script is the only reliable evidence. It also means specialist local supply in any one Higher Level subject is thin.

COREAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

The Diploma core: internal assessment, Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge

Assessed against criterion letters published in each subject guide and in the core guides, and supervised by the school. This is where judging a provider matters most, because the difference between legitimate feedback and malpractice is a difference in kind rather than degree. Ask how feedback is delivered and expect the answer to involve questions.

One provider in the wider UAE search results sells finished internal assessments at AED 3,750. In a market where that is available, the single most important vetting question is how a provider describes coursework support. Any answer involving producing, completing or supplying the work should end the conversation, because the risk lands on your child.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Below are the subjects Abu Dhabi students most often need help with, each with the assessment feature that decides the grade. Naming that feature is how you tell a subject specialist from a strong graduate.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Proof, calculus and algebraic fluency carry the grade, and method marks are the commonest loss: a correct answer with unwritten steps scores below a flawed attempt that shows its working. Higher Level adds depth rather than breadth. A tutor should be able to say which topics in the current guide they consider the usual failure points.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Modelling, statistics and technology use dominate, and losses cluster on interpreting a result in context rather than on computing it. Students who can run a regression often cannot say what it means for the situation described. A tutor quoting the same approach for both maths routes has not asked which course your child takes.

Physics

HL and SL

Long-answer explanation is where the grade moves, and the commonest failure is describing a phenomenon when the command term asks for a causal explanation. Dropped units and unstated assumptions cost marks on every paper. Higher Level carries an additional paper and additional topics, which changes the hours substantially.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Calculation chains, equilibrium reasoning and bonding explanations. The internally assessed work is where criterion-level judgement bites hardest, particularly on data processing and evaluation, and it is the component where feedback quality differs most between providers.

Biology

HL and SL

Volume rather than conceptual difficulty. A six-mark question wants six distinct scoring points and most students write two points three times. The fix is structural and fast, which makes Biology one of the subjects where a short, sharply aimed block genuinely changes a grade.

Economics

HL and SL

Diagrams carry marks and most are drawn with unlabelled axes or the wrong curve shifted. Evaluation questions want a judgement supported by a reason, not a balanced list. Higher Level adds quantitative questions that are reliable marks and frequently abandoned under time pressure.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Paper one analysis and the individual oral reward a thesis that answers the question asked. A fluent essay about the text that does not address the prompt sits in a middle band however well written. Ask a prospective tutor to explain the markbands rather than the texts.

Business Management

HL and SL

Application to the organisation in the stem separates bands. Generic answers cap low regardless of fluency, which is why marked scripts in this subject often surprise parents who have read the essays and found them good. The correction is specific and quick once it has been identified.

Arabic A and Arabic B

HL, SL and ab initio

Carried by many Abu Dhabi students alongside the Diploma, and assessed against criteria that reward written structure as much as fluency. A confident speaker can sit in a middle band on written components, which is the gap a tutor who knows the criteria will find and a language tutor who does not will miss.

Theory of Knowledge

Diploma core

Assessed on the exhibition and the essay, both against published criteria, and both frequently treated as unteachable. They are not: the failure mode is almost always an essay that discusses knowledge questions in general rather than answering the prescribed title. Feedback here should be questions about the argument.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways support is usually structured, judged on what each is actually good at rather than on which is best. The right one follows from the diagnosis, not the other way round.

Weekly one-to-one on a named component

A fixed slot aimed at one paper or one criterion, carried across a term. Judge this arrangement on whether the error log shrinks: errors going in and coming out is the mechanism, and a tutor who cannot produce one is working from memory. Best when the diagnosis is a technique or structure problem rather than missing content.

  • Aimed at a paper number or criterion letter, not a subject
  • Running error log is the thing to inspect at week six
  • Lowest cost per hour of the three arrangements

Coursework feedback timed to school deadlines

A short sequence of sessions placed against your school's internal assessment, Extended Essay or Theory of Knowledge draft dates. Judge it on the form the feedback takes: questions and criterion references, not rewritten paragraphs. Any version that offers to produce the work is the thing this market does worst and the thing to refuse.

  • Sessions placed against the school's dates, not the provider's
  • Feedback as questions and criterion letters
  • Dated trail of the student's own revisions kept

A measured block before the papers

A finite run of hours opening and closing with a comparable timed paper, so there is a before and after rather than an impression. Judge it on whether the closing paper is the same style as the opening one. A block that cannot be measured at the end was never designed to be.

  • Opens and closes with comparable timed papers
  • Fixed hour count agreed in advance
  • New content stops two weeks before the first paper

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Abu Dhabi

01

What the six subject groups assess, and where marks go in each

A Diploma student studies one subject from each of six groups, with three taken at Higher Level. The groups are studies in language and literature, language acquisition, individuals and societies, sciences, mathematics, and the arts, with some permitted substitutions. Each group has its own assessment logic, which is why a tutor who claims the whole Diploma is describing availability rather than expertise.

The practical value of knowing the group structure is triage. A student losing marks across two sciences and mathematics has a method and precision problem that one tutor may be able to address. A student losing marks in language and literature and in individuals and societies has an argument-construction problem, which is a different specialist. Spending on both at once is often unnecessary once the pattern is visible.

The table below sets out what each group actually measures and the characteristic failure. These are not difficulty rankings; they are the places a marker most often has to withhold a mark. Every one of them is diagnosable from a single marked script, which is why the first session should produce one rather than a lesson.

One note specific to UAE schools. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are mandated alongside the licensed international curriculum in private schools, and in Dubai the Knowledge and Human Development Authority calculates their instructional time on a forty-minute lesson unit. For an Abu Dhabi Diploma student that means genuine timetable pressure on top of six subjects and the core, which is the real reason revision time is scarce rather than any lack of effort.

The artsProcess portfolio, exhibition or performance against criteriaStrong practical work with under-documented processDocumentation planned against the criteria from the start
02

Command terms: the five words that decide a long-answer mark

More marks are lost to command terms than to any single topic, and almost no school report says so. A command term is the instruction verb at the start of a question, and it tells the marker what to reward. A question asking a student to explain and receiving a description cannot be given the explanation marks however accurate the description is. Students read the noun in the question and skip the verb, and they do it consistently until someone makes them stop.

The terms worth learning are few. State and outline want brief, unelaborated answers and should be answered quickly so the time goes elsewhere. Describe wants features without causes. Explain wants causes and mechanisms. Analyse wants a breakdown into parts and their relationships. Discuss wants a balanced consideration. Evaluate wants a judgement with supporting reasoning. Justify wants a reason for a position already taken. Compare wants similarities and differences addressed together rather than two separate paragraphs.

This is the fastest-moving thing in a term of tuition, which is why it is the first thing to target when the window is short. It is a habit rather than knowledge, and a student corrected on the same term four times generally stops. Two to four weeks of marked written answers usually produces visible movement on long-answer marks, which makes it the highest-return work available before a paper.

Parents can check this at home without any subject knowledge. Take a marked script, read the command term at the start of a question where marks were lost, and read your child's answer. If the verb and the answer do not match, you have found the problem and you can say so specifically to any prospective tutor. That is the kind of question that separates a provider who will diagnose from one who will reassure.

Criterion letters: the most useful thing a Middle Years parent can learn

  • Four criteria per subject, each marked zero to eight, names varying by group
  • A summative level of five hides two completely different students
  • Ask the school for the breakdown by letter, not the reported level
  • The weak criterion at 13 predicts the Diploma difficulty at 16

Middle Years subjects are assessed against four criteria, each marked from zero to eight, and the school converts the criterion totals into the level you see on the report using its own published boundaries. The criterion names differ by subject group, so the letters matter more than the words: what you want from the school is the breakdown by letter, not the summative level.

The reason is arithmetic. A reported level of five can come from four criteria at five each, or from two at seven and two at three. Those are completely different students. The first needs general consolidation; the second has one specific skill that is dragging a whole subject down, and that skill can usually be fixed in weeks. Most parents are never shown the breakdown, and most schools will provide it if asked directly.

In the sciences the criteria run broadly from knowing and understanding, through inquiring and designing, to processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. In mathematics they run from knowing and understanding, through investigating patterns and communicating, to applying mathematics in real-life contexts. The names and the exact wording are in the current subject guide for each group, and a tutor should be working from that document rather than from memory of an older version.

This also predicts the Diploma. A student strong on knowing and understanding and weak on the criterion that requires extended reasoning will find Diploma long-answer questions and internal assessments hard in exactly that way, two or three years before it becomes a grade problem. Of all the things on this page, asking your school for the criterion breakdown is the one that costs nothing and changes the most.

04

Nine questions whose answers are checkable

Every provider in this market will say their tutors are experienced, qualified and IB-trained. None of those words is checkable, which is why they are used. The nine questions below are chosen because each has an answer that is a document, a number or a specific refusal, and a provider either produces it or does not.

Ask them in order and stop when one is dodged. The pattern is more informative than any single answer: a provider who answers seven and evades two is usually evading the two that matter. Apply them to us as well. We fail some versions of these questions on purpose, because a truthful no is worth more than a vague yes, and the answers below tell you which ones.

Two of the nine are the ones this market handles worst. The regulator question catches providers describing their tutors as approved by a body that approves no tutors. The coursework question catches providers who will produce assessed work, which is the single most dangerous purchase available to an IB family because the consequence falls on the student. If you only ask two, ask those.

A note on the free-trial question. A trial that is a consultation with a coordinator tells you nothing about the tutor who would teach. Ask whether the free session is with the actual tutor and whether it uses a real past-paper question. If it is a sales call, it is marketing with a price of zero rather than a trial.

05

Higher Level against Standard Level: what the difference actually is

Parents often ask whether a Higher Level subject needs more tutoring than a Standard Level one, and the honest answer is that it needs different tutoring. The difference is not simply more content. It is additional assessment, greater depth in named topics, and in most subjects an extra paper, which changes both the preparation and the failure modes.

The practical consequences are three. First, the specialist pool narrows sharply: the number of tutors who have genuinely carried a Higher Level course through to the papers is much smaller than the number who can teach the subject, and in a small emirate cohort that shows up as scarcity. Second, the internal assessment carries the same weight it does at Standard Level but sits on top of more external content, so the time pressure is worse. Third, the extra paper tends to be the one where the depth is tested, which means it is where the grade is won and lost.

This should also feed a decision parents sometimes have to make in Diploma year one: whether to move a subject from Higher to Standard Level. That is a school decision with its own deadline, and it is worth making on evidence rather than on distress. A marked script that shows method and command-term losses points to a fixable problem at Higher Level; one that shows blank topics across the additional content points to a level that was the wrong fit from the start.

The table sets out what to compare across. It deliberately does not state weightings, paper durations or topic lists, because those are published per subject in the current IB subject guide and they change. A tutor should be reading your child's subject guide rather than quoting figures from memory, and that is itself a thing you can test in a trial lesson.

06

Coursework: the line, and why it decides which provider to use

  • Legitimate: criteria explained, technique modelled elsewhere, questions on a draft, practice marked
  • Illegitimate: any arrangement where the work arrives finished
  • The sanction for malpractice falls on the student, not the provider
  • Keep the dated revision trail; it is the student's own authenticity evidence

Every IB subject has internally assessed work and the Diploma adds the Extended Essay and the Theory of Knowledge essay. All of it must be the student's own, submitted through a school accountable for its authenticity. That makes coursework support the place where provider quality varies most, and the place where the wrong choice carries a consequence that no refund addresses.

The legitimate version is specific. A tutor may explain the criteria in the current subject guide, model a technique on different material or a different dataset, ask questions about a draft, point to a paragraph and say that the conclusion does not follow from the evidence presented, and mark the student's own practice against the markbands. That is genuinely valuable work and it is where many students gain the most.

The illegitimate version is equally specific, and it is sold openly in this market. One provider found in the wider UAE search results prices finished internal assessments at AED 3,750. The IB's academic-honesty rules make that a malpractice matter for the candidate, and the sanction falls on the student rather than on the seller. If any part of a provider's offer involves the work arriving finished, under any label, that is the line.

There is a useful side effect of insisting on the legitimate version. A dated sequence of questions and the student's own revisions is exactly what a school's supervision process expects to see, and it is the student's own evidence that the work is theirs if authenticity is ever queried. Families sometimes treat that trail as paperwork; it is better understood as protection. Related: no provider should be sending you IB subject guides, past papers or mark schemes as downloads, because that material belongs to the IB and redistributing it is copyright infringement.

07

Claims to discount entirely

  • Self-published star ratings with no attributable reviews: discount entirely
  • Claims of regulator or examination-board approval: no such approval exists for tutors
  • Any statistic without sample size, date and method: treat as absent
  • Promised grades, improvements or refunds tied to outcomes: a warning, not a reassurance

Four categories of claim appear throughout this market and none of them should move a decision. Knowing them makes a results page much easier to read, because once they are stripped out most providers are saying very little.

Self-generated ratings are the first. A star rating a provider publishes about itself, with no countable and attributable reviews behind it, is decoration and in structured data it also breaches Google's policies. One competitor publishes an aggregate rating of 4.9 generated by itself; another shows two different review figures on the same page; a third shows a perfect score from twenty reviews next to a claimed student body in the thousands. Treat any of these as a reason for caution.

Regulator approval is the second and the most misleading. No education regulator in the UAE approves or accredits tutoring platforms. An individual tutor needs the MoHRE private tuition permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, granted free of charge for two years to eligible applicants including registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. A tutoring business with premises needs a permit from the relevant emirate authority. Neither makes a platform accredited, and IB Gram holds no such approval and claims none.

The third is any statistic without a sample size, a date and a method: satisfaction percentages, average scores, student counts, grade-improvement figures. The fourth is a promised outcome of any kind, including a score, a specific grade movement, a university place or a refund tied to results. Nothing on this page makes any of those claims, which is why it contains fewer impressive numbers than the pages it competes with and more checkable ones.

08

What one session can realistically change

  • A first session produces a diagnosis, not a term of teaching
  • One hour does one of four jobs well, or four of them badly
  • Baseline, largest category, midpoint review, second category, comparable paper
  • What a term delivers is visible change in the work, not a predicted grade

Expectations about a single session are usually either too high or too low, and both cost money. A first session cannot teach a term of missing content and should not try. What it can do is produce a diagnosis that is worth more than the hour cost, which is why the first session with us is a timed paper rather than teaching.

A well-used hour does one of four things. It establishes a baseline by marking a timed paper and categorising the losses. It corrects one specific habit, such as a command term, on enough examples that the student notices the pattern. It takes one piece of the student's own draft work and asks the questions that make the weakness visible to them. Or it rehearses a procedure, such as a calculation chain or a diagram, until it is automatic. Attempting all four in one hour achieves none.

Across a term the sequence matters more than the total. Baseline first, then the largest loss category, then a review at the halfway point against the baseline, then the second category, then a comparable paper near the end so the movement is measured rather than described. A provider who cannot describe that sequence for your child specifically, after seeing marked work, is selling hours rather than a plan.

The limit is worth stating plainly. Even a well-sequenced term fixes what is in the student's work; it does not predict a grade, because boundaries move and papers vary. The claim this page makes is narrower: that you will be able to see what changed, in documents, and decide for yourself whether it was worth the money. In a market where half the providers will not print a price and several publish ratings they wrote themselves, that is a more useful promise than a better one.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Abu Dhabi

Where you live changes which local options exist and therefore what a realistic comparison looks like. Online delivery widens the pool rather than narrowing it, which matters most in the communities where local specialist supply is thinnest.

Al Reem Island

Dense, central and well served by nearby schools, so local in-home options exist for widely taught subjects. For a thin Higher Level subject the local pool collapses quickly, and that is where the comparison stops being about price.

Saadiyat Island

Small catchment with a limited local tutor population relative to the number of IB students. Families here frequently find that the available local option is a generalist and the available specialist is remote.

Khalifa City and Al Raha

Long school transport in both directions, so any in-home arrangement has to be late. The practical effect on judging options is that the pool narrows to tutors free after 17:30 and willing to travel, which is a selection on availability rather than on subject depth.

Al Bateen and Al Mushrif

The densest local tutor supply in the emirate and therefore the widest genuine choice for common subjects. Still thin for a specific Higher Level science, which is the pattern across the whole emirate.

Yas Island

Newer and growing, with small Diploma cohorts per school. A student can be the only one in their year taking a Higher Level subject, which removes class position as any kind of signal and makes the marked script the only evidence.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City and Mussafah

Large mainland catchment, long inbound journeys, and a mixed school profile. Judging options here almost always comes down to online against a generalist who can reach you, rather than between two specialists.

Al Ain

Under ADEK like the capital, but far enough out that specialist supply in a given Higher Level subject is close to absent. Comparison is between online options, which at least makes the comparison a fair one on subject depth.

Al Dhafra and the Western Region

Very limited Diploma-level provision locally. For most Higher Level subjects there is no local option at any price, so the question becomes which remote arrangement is strongest rather than whether remote is acceptable.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Name the component before anything else

Send the most recent marked work and, for a Diploma student, the paper the marks were lost on. For a Middle Years student, ask the school for the criterion breakdown behind the reported level and send that. Those documents turn a vague worry into a specific question that a specialist can answer in one session.

  2. 02

Free trial lesson with the tutor who would teach

Not a consultation. The trial runs with the specific tutor, on a real past-paper question, and you can watch how a correction is actually made. It is also the right moment to ask about the MoHRE permit and to see whether the tutor refers to the current subject guide or works from memory.

  3. 03

    Baseline paper marked and categorised

One full timed paper or criterion-marked task, with every lost mark tagged as recall, method, command term or timing. The counts come to you in writing. That document decides the sequence of the term and is the only thing a later paper can be honestly compared against.

  4. 04

A sequence, not a block of hours

Largest loss category first, a written review at the midpoint against the baseline, the second category next, and a comparable timed paper near the end. Where school coursework deadlines fall, the sequence moves to fit your school's calendar rather than ours.

  5. 05

A written verdict at the midpoint

The error log is compared against the baseline and you are told in writing whether it is working. If a category has not moved, the approach changes rather than the hours increasing, which sometimes means a different tutor. If the honest answer is that this was the wrong purchase, you get that answer too.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Components named, not subjects

Every plan names the paper number or criterion letter being worked on, after someone has read marked work. A tutor who can only name the subject is offering availability rather than diagnosis, and that distinction is the one thing in this market that reliably predicts whether a term achieves anything.

Nine questions we expect to be asked

The vetting questions on this page are the ones we would want a parent to ask us. Two of them we answer with a flat no, on purpose: we hold no regulator approval, and we will not produce coursework at any price. A truthful no is more useful than a vague yes.

No number we could not evidence

No satisfaction percentage, no self-published star rating, no student count, no average score. Several providers ranking for this query publish figures that contradict themselves on the same page. The test worth applying, to us included, is whether a number comes with a sample size, a date and a method.

Current subject guides, not remembered ones

Criteria, weightings and topic lists are published per subject and they change. A tutor should be reading your child's current subject guide rather than quoting figures from an older version, and that is something you can test directly in a free trial lesson by asking where a weighting comes from.

One-to-one online, which widens the pool

Sessions run live over video, one student and one tutor, at Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes in the UAE. In an emirate where a Higher Level specialist may not exist within a drivable radius, removing travel is what makes a genuine subject match possible rather than merely convenient.

Regulators explained, never claimed

This page explains what ADEK and the other emirate authorities actually govern and what the MoHRE permit covers, with sources. IB Gram holds no approval, accreditation or partnership from any of them, from the IB, or from any examination board. The phrase describing tutors as regulator-approved is the most misleading thing in this market.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

Is there any objective way to rank IB tutors in this emirate?+

No. No regulator scores tutors, no published dataset exists to rank them from, and every rating you will see in these search results was generated by the provider showing it. One competitor publishes an aggregate score it wrote itself; another shows two different review totals on the same page. What can be assessed objectively is fit: whether a tutor works on the specific paper or criterion your child is losing marks on, whether they hold the MoHRE permit, whether marking is inside the rate, and how they handle coursework. Those four have checkable answers.

What single question separates a real specialist from a strong graduate?+

Ask which paper number or criterion letter they would work on, and expect them to decline to answer until they have seen marked work. A specialist thinks in components: Paper 2 extended response, the data-processing criterion, the individual oral. A strong graduate thinks in topics and will offer to cover the syllabus. Both can teach; only one can diagnose. The follow-up that confirms it is asking where a weighting or criterion wording comes from, because the answer should be your child's current subject guide rather than memory.

Why does my child's school report not tell me what the problem is?+

Because a reported level or grade aggregates things that need different solutions. A Middle Years level of five can be four criteria at five, or two at seven and two at three, and those are different students. A Diploma grade can come from a student who knows the content and runs out of time, one who answers the wrong question, or one with blank topics. Ask the school for the criterion breakdown or the marked script rather than the summary. Most schools will provide it, and it is the single most useful thing you can obtain for free.

How much of an IB grade is really lost to command terms?+

Enough that it is the first thing to target when time is short. A command term is the instruction verb at the start of a question and it tells the marker what to reward. An answer that describes where the question says explain cannot be awarded the explanation marks however accurate it is. Students read the noun and skip the verb, consistently, until corrected. It is a habit rather than knowledge, so two to four weeks of marked written answers usually produces visible movement, which makes it the highest-return work available before a paper.

Can I check the command-term problem myself without knowing the subject?+

Yes, and it takes ten minutes. Take a marked script, find a question where marks were lost, read the first word of the question, then read your child's answer. If the question says explain and the answer lists features, you have found the problem. If it says evaluate and the answer gives a balanced list with no judgement, same. You do not need the subject knowledge to see the mismatch, and being able to describe it specifically to a prospective tutor is the fastest way to find out whether they diagnose or reassure.

Does a Higher Level subject need more hours than a Standard Level one?+

It needs different hours as much as more of them. Higher Level adds depth in named topics and in most subjects an extra paper, and that extra paper is usually where the depth is tested and the marks are lost. The internal assessment carries its weight on top of more external content, so time pressure is the real difference rather than task difficulty. The other consequence is supply: the pool of tutors who have carried a Higher Level course to the papers is much smaller than the pool who can teach the subject, which matters in a small cohort.

Should we move a subject from Higher to Standard Level?+

That is a school decision with its own deadline, and it should be made on evidence rather than on how stressful the term feels. A marked script showing method and command-term losses points to a fixable problem at Higher Level, because those respond quickly to correction. A script showing blank topics across the additional higher-level content points to a level that was the wrong fit from the start, and no number of hours changes that cheaply. Get the script read before the conversation with the coordinator, not after.

How do I tell legitimate coursework help from the kind that gets a student in trouble?+

By the form the output takes. Legitimate support is criteria explained, technique modelled on different material, questions asked about a draft, and the student's own practice marked against the markbands. Illegitimate support is any arrangement where the work arrives finished, whatever it is called. One provider in the wider UAE results prices completed internal assessments at AED 3,750. The IB's academic-honesty rules make that a malpractice matter for the candidate, so the sanction lands on your child rather than on the seller. Ask how feedback is delivered and listen for questions.

Are any tutoring providers in Abu Dhabi actually approved by ADEK?+

ADEK supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate; it does not accredit tutoring platforms or individual tutors. An individual tutor needs the MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years. A tutoring business with premises needs a permit from the relevant emirate authority. Neither of those makes a platform regulator-approved. Any provider describing its tutors as approved or accredited by an education regulator is making a claim that cannot be true, and the permit number is the thing to ask for.

My child is one of three in their Higher Level class. Does that change anything?+

It changes what the school report can tell you. In a group of three, class position is noise: being bottom means almost nothing and being top means almost nothing. It also means misconceptions can go unchallenged for longer, because there are fewer peers asking the questions that surface them. The practical consequence is that the marked script becomes the only reliable diagnostic. It is also the clearest case for reaching a specialist remotely, since the local pool for that subject in this emirate is unlikely to contain one.

What should a free trial lesson actually involve?+

The tutor who would teach, a real past-paper question, and a correction you can watch being made. If the free session is a consultation with a coordinator, it is marketing priced at zero and tells you nothing about the teaching. Use it to ask three things directly: which component they would work on and why, whether they hold the MoHRE permit, and where the criteria or weightings they mention come from. A tutor who reaches for the current subject guide rather than memory is showing you something real.

Is a tutor who covers five or six IB subjects a good sign?+

Usually the opposite. Each subject has its own guide, its own criterion letters and its own characteristic mark losses, and the depth required to diagnose a Higher Level component takes time in that subject specifically. A tutor offering six is describing a timetable rather than an expertise. There are reasonable pairings: two sciences, or a science with a mathematics route, often share method and work well together because the error log overlaps. A science plus an English A course plus Economics does not.

Which IB subjects respond fastest to tutoring?+

The ones where the loss is structural rather than knowledge-based. Biology long answers, Economics diagrams and evaluation, and Business Management application to the stem all tend to move quickly, because the failure is a writing pattern that can be corrected on a handful of marked examples. Mathematics method discipline takes longer. Content recall across a Higher Level science is the slowest of all and needs weeks of spaced retrieval rather than intensity. If your window is short, target the fast ones and leave the slow one to a longer arrangement.

Why does this page not say that your tutoring is better than other providers'?+

Because the claim would not be checkable and you would be right to ignore it. What this page offers instead is a set of tests you can run on any provider, us included, and the answers we give. We hold no regulator or examination-board approval. We will not produce coursework at any price. We publish market rates with their source and date rather than impressive figures about ourselves. We quote after a marked diagnostic rather than before. Those are narrower claims than the competition makes, and unlike theirs they can be verified.

What should I do first if I have no idea where the problem is?+

Two free things, in this order. Ask the school for the marked script or the criterion breakdown behind the reported level, which costs nothing and is usually provided on request. Then take a free trial lesson that uses a real past-paper question, and ask the tutor what they think the pattern is. Between those two you will usually know whether the issue is recall, method, command terms or timing, which determines what to buy and how long it will take. Buying hours before that is the commonest way families waste a term.

Run the nine questions, including on us

Judging IB tuition is a matter of asking questions whose answers are documents. Which paper number or criterion letter will be worked on. Whether the tutor holds the MoHRE permit and will show it. Whether the free trial is with the tutor who would teach. Whether marking is inside the rate. How coursework feedback is delivered. Ask those of every provider on your list and the list usually shortens quickly. Send your child's most recent marked work, take the trial lesson, and let the baseline paper decide the plan. Sessions run one-to-one over live video at Gulf Standard Time.
