IB DP Biology SL Home Tutor in Abu Dhabi

Most families looking for an IB DP Biology SL home tutor in Abu Dhabi get a quote before they get an explanation. This page reverses that. It publishes the AED bands the market actually charges, names the source and year for each, sets out what an hour should contain, prices the work by task instead of by hour, and says where the travel premium in this emirate comes from. Teaching itself runs one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time slots.

  • Every AED band on this page carries its source and year
  • Priced by task as well as by hour, so you can compare quotes
  • A free 45-minute trial lesson first, no card details required

Why a biology quote in Abu Dhabi can be AED 60 or AED 600

Three of the six most visible tutoring pages for this market publish no price at all, and two of the three that do quote in US dollars, which is not the currency Abu Dhabi families transact in. The result is that a parent asking what Standard Level Biology support costs gets a range spanning an order of magnitude and no way to compare the ends of it. This page publishes the bands, names the source and the year of each, and explains what differs between a budget hour and a specialist one.

The honest summary is that four things move the number: who is teaching, whether anyone travels, whether marking and written records are inside the hour, and when in the two years you buy. A university student teaching online from outside the UAE sits at one end. A subject specialist marking written work and keeping records sits in the middle. A named examiner sits at the top. The published bands are set out in the first section, and none of them is our fee: tuition here is quoted on enquiry, after a free trial session.

Standard Level Biology is a 150-hour course examined through two written papers and one internal scientific investigation worth 20 per cent. That structure matters to the cost because the components respond differently to paid time. Investigation support is a defined block with a deadline, which makes it predictable to budget. Written technique work is weekly and slow. Content coverage is the most expensive thing to buy and the thing a school is already providing, which is why it is often the worst first purchase.

The second thing that moves a quote in this emirate is geography, and it is specific to Abu Dhabi rather than generic. An in-home tutor reaching Al Shamkha, Al Falah, Baniyas or Al Samha from the island in late-afternoon traffic can lose ninety minutes of working time to one lesson, and that time appears in the rate whether it is itemised or not. Families in those communities are quoted differently from families in Al Karamah or Al Wahda, for reasons that have nothing to do with biology.

Everything here is written for comparison rather than persuasion. The tables price the work by task so that two quotes can be put next to each other, the questions that change an invoice are listed before you have to ask them, and one section sets out what a family can do for nothing before paying anybody. Teaching is delivered one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time slots, so no travel component is being charged for and no part of the emirate is quoted a different rate. Our own rate is given on enquiry after the trial session rather than printed here, which is a deliberate choice: a headline figure without knowing which component is weak would be a guess dressed as a price.

At a glance

  • Published AED bands, each with its source and year named
  • The hour is not standard: marking and written records are often billed separately
  • Investigation support is a defined block; content coverage is the costliest purchase
  • Travel inside Abu Dhabi is the main reason in-home quotes vary by community
  • Sessions are online and one-to-one, so no travel is priced in
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

What a family pays depends partly on where the student came from, because the gap being closed is different for each route into Standard Level Biology.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects with three at Standard Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service. Standard Level Biology satisfies the sciences requirement and is examined through two written papers and one scientific investigation carrying 20 per cent. The course runs across four themes examined at several levels of organisation, so the content is broad rather than deep.

In Abu Dhabi the Standard Level biology group is usually the bigger of the two in a school and absorbs a wide range of ability. Families who budget for two years of weekly sessions from the start generally overspend; those who buy a defined investigation block and a short technique block in DP2 tend to get more grade movement per dirham.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

Middle Years Programme

Assessed against four science criteria weighted towards investigation design, data processing and evaluation. Students arriving from MYP are generally well prepared for the Diploma investigation and less prepared for recall volume and written structure under time. The cost consequence is useful: the component that is most expensive to support later is the one MYP already prepared them for.

Abu Dhabi has several IB continuum schools where this transition happens internally and is rarely flagged to parents. Families from this route who buy investigation support in DP1 frequently find they did not need it, while the written-technique block they skipped in DP2 is the one that would have moved the grade.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge and Edexcel upper secondary

Cambridge IGCSE Biology 0610 and Edexcel 4BI1 build strong factual foundations through short, directive questions. What they do not build is experience of unfamiliar data sets or extended written reasoning, both of which the Diploma papers test. Students from this route need fewer content hours and more technique hours than their parents usually expect.

The British-curriculum sector in Abu Dhabi is large, so most Standard Level biology groups contain a majority of ex-IGCSE students. For a family budgeting carefully, the cheapest useful purchase in DP1 is a short block on data-based questions, because that skill is absent from the IGCSE experience and carries marks in both papers and in the investigation.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Families rarely buy support for one subject alone, so the notes below include what each subject costs in effort relative to biology.

Biology

Standard Level

Four themes, two written papers and one investigation worth 20 per cent. The budget-efficient purchases are the investigation block and data-based question practice; broad content revision is the most expensive and most duplicative thing to buy, since the school is already teaching it.

Biology

Higher Level

Additional depth inside the same four themes, more taught hours and a longer written paper. Specialist rates for the Higher Level material sit at the upper end of published bands, and the investigation requires the same statistical work at both levels, so that block costs much the same either way.

Chemistry

Standard Level

Frequently taken alongside biology by health-science applicants. It fails quantitatively rather than structurally, so a family supporting both subjects should expect two different kinds of session and should not assume one science tutor covers both well.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

Standard Level

Its statistics content covers most of what the biology investigation needs, which removes an entire category of paid hours. Families whose child takes this route can usually skip a separate statistics block.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

Standard Level

Strong algebra and little applied statistics. Students on this route commonly need two or three paid sessions on spread, error bars and significance testing before they can process their own investigation data, and that cost should be planned for rather than discovered.

Environmental Systems and Societies

Standard Level

Shares the ecology material and can satisfy two requirements at once. Students who move here from biology mid-course need a short systems-thinking block rather than further biology, which is one of the cheaper transitions available in the Diploma.

Sports, Exercise and Health Science

Standard Level

Overlaps with human physiology in biology. Where both are taken, sequencing the revision deliberately means one set of paid hours serves two syllabuses, which is the clearest example of double duty in a Diploma package.

Psychology

Standard Level

Shares the biological approach to behaviour and makes similar written demands. Technique work bought for biology extended responses transfers here, so a family supporting both should buy the writing block once rather than twice.

Business Management

Standard Level

A common sixth subject. Its written-response style resembles biology extended answers more than students expect, so command-term work has value across both and is worth buying as a single block.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

Falls in the same weeks as the biology investigation in most Abu Dhabi schools. Budgeting biology hours into those weeks without checking the core deadlines is the most common scheduling mistake families make.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats, three quite different costs. The right one depends on which component is losing marks rather than on how much support feels reassuring.

Defined investigation block

A fixed number of sessions around the scientific investigation, timed to the school's internal deadlines. Because the task has a deadline and a scope, this is the most predictable thing in the whole course to budget for, and it covers 20 per cent of the grade. Methodology, statistics and evaluation are taught, then the student's own dated drafts are read and returned with questions.

  • Scoped in sessions, not open-ended
  • Covers the component worth 20 per cent of the grade
  • Statistics taught on the student's own data
  • Drafts stay the student's own work from first version to last

Short technique block in DP2

Four to six weekly sessions on extended written answers and data-based questions, bought in the term before mocks. This is the best value per dirham in the second year, because it addresses the components carrying the most marks and the skills a large class has least time to coach individually.

  • Built on past-paper items attempted cold
  • One written answer marked against published criteria each week
  • Data-based routine drilled on unseen figures
  • Ends on a fixed date rather than renewing by default

Weekly maintenance across the course

The most expensive option and occasionally the right one, for a student who needs the structure of a fixed weekly commitment to keep up at all. If you buy this, buy it knowing what it is: pacing support rather than targeted repair, and it should be reviewed every term against the alternative of two short blocks.

  • A fixed weekly slot across a term or longer
  • Suits students whose difficulty is consistency rather than content
  • Reviewed each term against the shorter-block alternative
  • Pausable for travel, examinations and Ramadan schedule changes

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Abu Dhabi

01

What the Abu Dhabi market charges for Standard Level Biology

The table below collects the published figures rather than estimating them. Each band names the provider or survey that published it and the year, because a rate without a source is a negotiating position rather than information. Taken together they explain the spread a parent encounters: the bottom of the market and the top of it are not selling the same hour, and the middle is where most Diploma subject teaching actually sits.

Two patterns are worth noticing before reading the rows. First, the lowest advertised rates almost always describe online group or university-student teaching, not one-to-one Diploma subject specialists. Second, in-home rates carry travel inside them whether or not the quote says so, which is why the in-home band overlaps the specialist band despite describing less subject depth in many cases. Comparing a budget online rate with an in-home rate is comparing two different products.

None of these figures is our price. Tuition with IB Gram is quoted on enquiry after a free trial session, and the figures here exist so that you can judge any quote, ours included, against what the market publishes. If a provider will not tell you their rate until after a consultation, that is itself a data point: the two most visible agencies in this market publish no AED figure at all, and one of them asks the price question in its own FAQ and then declines to answer it. A provider who will not name a band before a consultation is reserving the right to price you rather than the work.

02

Where the Abu Dhabi travel premium actually comes from

Abu Dhabi is not a compact city and the Diploma schools are not evenly spread through it. A tutor based near the central school cluster who accepts a 17:30 lesson in Al Shamkha, Al Falah, Al Reef or Hydra Village is committing to a round trip that can approach ninety minutes in late-afternoon traffic. That time is unbillable and finite, which means it is recovered either in the hourly rate, in a minimum session length, or by the tutor declining journeys of that kind in the busiest weeks of the year.

This is why two families in the same emirate are quoted differently for identical teaching. It is also why in-home availability thins exactly when demand peaks: in the six weeks before mocks, tutors fill their diaries with the shortest journeys first. Families in peripheral communities regularly discover that the person who covered their child in DP1 is unavailable in the term that matters, and that the replacement wants a higher rate for the same distance.

IB Gram does not offer home visits in Abu Dhabi or anywhere else in the UAE; in-home visits are a service we run only in India. Teaching for Abu Dhabi families is delivered one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time slots. The cost consequence is simple and worth stating plainly: there is no travel inside the rate, no minimum length imposed by a journey, and no difference between what a family in Madinat Zayed and a family in Al Karamah is quoted. What you give up is a person in the room; what you get back is distance made irrelevant to price and to availability.

03

Priced by task rather than by hour

An hourly rate is a poor unit for comparing quotes, because the work is not uniform. Teaching a research question until it is answerable is a different job from marking an extended response, and both are different from drilling unseen data items. The table below prices the recurring tasks in Standard Level Biology by the hours each typically absorbs, using the market bands from the previous section, so that two providers can be compared on the job rather than on the unit.

Three of these tasks carry most of the value in the course. The investigation block covers a component worth 20 per cent and has a fixed scope, which makes it the most predictable spend available. The data-based block transfers directly to both the paper and the investigation, so it does double duty. Written-technique work on extended answers is slow and addresses the largest component. Everything else is either content the school is already delivering or scheduling support that happens to look like teaching.

Use the table as a checklist when you take a quote. Ask which of these tasks the quoted hour includes, whether marking and written feedback sit inside it, and what happens to the price if the investigation deadline moves. Providers who price by package rather than by task should be asked to say which of these rows the package covers, because a monthly figure that looks competitive can quietly exclude the two rows that matter most.

04

What 150 taught hours contains, and which parts are worth paying twice for

Standard Level Biology is scheduled for 150 taught hours across two years, and your school is delivering all of them. Paying a tutor to repeat that delivery is the default purchase and the weakest one. The question worth asking is which parts of those 150 hours are structurally difficult to deliver to a class of twenty-five, because those are the parts where a second set of hours adds something rather than duplicating.

Three parts qualify. Individual feedback on extended writing is the first: a teacher with five classes cannot mark and discuss one long answer per student per week, however good they are. Statistical processing of one student's own investigation data is the second, since every data set is different and the help needed is specific. Unseen data-based practice is the third, because it requires immediate correction of a reasoning habit rather than exposition.

Content coverage does not qualify, with one exception: a genuine gap created by absence, a mid-year arrival in Abu Dhabi, or a topic missed during a change of teacher. Those gaps are real and worth paying to close, and they are narrow. A family that identifies two such gaps and buys four hours has spent well. A family that buys twenty hours of general revision has mostly paid for a second delivery of content that was already delivered, and the grade usually reflects that. The test for any content hour is whether the student could have got the same thing by attending a school clinic they are already entitled to.

05

Tutoring cost in context for an Abu Dhabi family

Tutoring is rarely the largest education line in an Abu Dhabi household budget, and seeing it next to the others changes how families decide. The table below places the published tutoring bands alongside the other costs that arrive in the same two years. The figures for tutoring are market bands from named sources; school fees vary so widely by school that only a band is meaningful, and your own invoice is the authority there.

One piece of context is often misapplied. KHDA announced in May 2026 that there would be no increase in school fees for private schools in Dubai for the 2026-27 academic year, under an economic incentives package. That applies to Dubai, not to Abu Dhabi, where fees are a matter for ADEK and the school. Families moving between the emirates should not assume the Dubai position applies to an Abu Dhabi invoice, and anyone quoting it at you as general UAE policy has not read it.

The useful reading of the table is proportional. Against two years of school fees, a defined investigation block plus a short technique block is a small addition that targets 20 per cent of one subject grade and the component carrying the largest share of marks. Two years of weekly sessions in a single subject, by contrast, approaches a meaningful fraction of a year's fees. That is not an argument against it; it is an argument for knowing which one you are buying before you commit.

06

The cheap hour that costs more

A low rate is not automatically poor value, and a high one is not automatically good. What matters is what the hour contains and what it leaves for you to do. At the bottom of the published bands the hour is usually teaching time alone: no marking, no written record, often a group rather than one-to-one, and frequently a tutor who studied the subject rather than one who teaches this syllabus. For a student who needs company while revising, that can be adequate and sensible.

It stops being adequate when the problem is technique. Extended written answers and data-based questions improve through marked attempts, and marking takes a tutor roughly as long as teaching does. An hour priced to exclude marking will exclude it, so the student writes less and the thing that was wrong stays wrong. Families often buy twelve cheap hours and achieve less than six hours would have achieved at a rate that included the marking, which is the most common false economy in this market.

There is also a time cost that never appears in a quote. Re-explaining a topic the student has already heard twice is comfortable for everybody and moves nothing. The expensive hour that identifies the actual error in the first twenty minutes has already outperformed four cheap hours of revision company. The way to tell the difference before paying is to ask what the first session will produce, and to treat a vague answer as the answer.

07

The questions that change the invoice

Ask these before the first paid session rather than after the third. Is the quoted rate per hour or per session, and how long is a session? Is marking of written work inside the rate? Are written notes or a progress record included, or billed? What is the cancellation window, and does a cancelled session carry forward or lapse? Does a package expire, and what happens to unused sessions at the end of term? Is there a different rate for the investigation block than for weekly teaching?

On tax, the only honest position is a narrow one. Ask any provider whether the price they quote you includes VAT, and get the answer in writing on the quote. This page does not state the UAE VAT treatment of tuition fees, because doing so would need a Federal Tax Authority citation rather than a confident paragraph, and several pages in this market assert a treatment without one. The practical protection is the same either way: a written quote that says whether the number is inclusive.

On anything described as free, check the condition on the same screen as the word. A free trial lesson here means a 45-minute working session with no card details required, which is the condition stated plainly rather than in a footnote. Where another provider offers a free assessment, ask what happens at the end of it and whether a package must be bought to receive the outcome. Those are reasonable questions and the answers are usually quick, which tells you something in itself.

08

Who you are actually paying, and the permit

Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and is open to teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit from MoHRE are subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws, and no fine schedule is published, so no figure should be quoted at you.

MoHRE's own service page for the permit is listed as the issuance of a new work permit for private tutor licensing, applied for through the MoHRE smart app, website and e-services system, with no fee listed and a short stated completion time. That makes the question easy to ask and easy to answer. A tutor who holds one can say so; a provider who becomes vague when asked is telling you how they handle other inconvenient questions.

In Abu Dhabi there is an additional consideration. ADEK's professional-ethics expectations for private and charter school staff have been reported as prohibiting paid private tutoring of students enrolled at the teacher's own school, and the permit's code of conduct points the same way. Confirm the current wording with the school or on ADEK's own policy pages before acting on it. The practical implication for a family comparing prices is that the apparently convenient option, paying your child's own biology teacher, carries a risk that falls mainly on the teacher and is not a saving worth engineering.

09

What to do for nothing before paying anybody

Several of the things that move a Standard Level Biology grade cost no money at all, and a provider who does not mention them is not being straight with you. Start with the school. Ask the biology teacher for the assessment-objective breakdown behind the last grade, ask where the class sits against the scheme of work, and ask for the internal deadline calendar for the investigation. Many Abu Dhabi schools run subject clinics or revision sessions that students do not attend because nobody at home knew they existed.

Next, the official material. Past papers and syllabus documents belong to the IB, and they are available to students through their school rather than from a tutoring website; ask the coordinator what your child is entitled to access. Nobody should be selling you syllabus documents, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables, and a provider offering them as downloads is distributing material they do not own.

Then the free habits. Five cold retrieval questions a day, done properly, beat an hour of rereading notes and cost nothing. Writing one extended answer a week and comparing it with the published criteria is free if the student does the comparing. A study group of three that marks each other's long answers against the criteria is close to the most cost-effective arrangement available to a Diploma student. Buy paid hours for what these cannot do: an unfamiliar error nobody at home can diagnose, statistics the mathematics course never covered, and marking that needs someone who knows the criteria.

Where we tutor

What a quote looks like across Abu Dhabi communities

Our own sessions are online, so the rate does not change with your address. These notes explain why in-home quotes in the local market do change with it, which is useful when you are comparing offers.

Khalifa City

Central enough that in-home quotes here sit at the lower end of the travel premium, and close to several Diploma schools. Evening slots from 17:00 are usually workable, which keeps the lesson inside a tutor's productive hours.

Al Reef

Near the airport and a long run from the island. In-home tutors quoting for Al Reef typically price in a round trip of well over an hour in afternoon traffic, and some decline the journey outright in mock season.

Baniyas

A large established community on the mainland, far from the island school cluster. Families here report the widest spread of quotes in the emirate, which reflects travel willingness rather than any difference in teaching.

Madinat Zayed

Well outside the city, where in-home biology tuition is scarce at any price and specialist Diploma subjects scarcer still. Online delivery removes the distance problem entirely rather than pricing it.

Al Karamah

An inner-city area with short journeys to most central schools. Quotes here tend to be closest to a tutor's base rate, since little of the hour is lost to travel.

Al Rawdah

Central and residential, with students at several nearby Diploma schools. Earlier slots are feasible, and families often take 16:30 so the evening is left free for written work.

Al Wahda

Dense central housing close to the main school corridor. Multiple-sibling households are common here, and providers quoting a household rate rather than a per-student rate should be asked exactly what that covers.

Hydra Village

A peripheral community where travel time dominates any in-home arrangement. The published in-home bands assume a reasonable journey; for Hydra Village they usually sit at the top of the range or above it.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Abu Dhabi

Central Abu Dhabi and the island

Established Diploma schools with large biology entries and subject specialists teaching them. Families here are generally quoted the base market rate for in-home work because journeys are short, so comparisons between providers are cleaner than elsewhere in the emirate.

The mainland communities and the airport corridor

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Say what you want to spend

A budget stated at the start produces better advice than one discovered at the end. A family with eight sessions to spend should be told which eight, and that answer differs from the plan for a family buying a term. Nobody needs to be talked up from a realistic figure to an aspirational one.

  2. 02

A free 45-minute trial, with no card required

The trial is a working session, not a consultation that withholds its findings. The student attempts items across the components and you are told which task rows from the table above are actually needed, with an estimate of hours for each. If the answer is fewer hours than you expected, that is the answer you receive.

  3. 03

Buy a scoped block, not an open arrangement

Investigation support is scoped to the school's deadlines. Technique blocks run four to six weeks and end. Weekly maintenance is available and is reviewed each term against the shorter alternative. Agreeing the shape before the first paid hour is what prevents a quiet annual commitment that nobody revisits.

  4. 04

    Get the inclusions in writing

Before the first session, confirm in writing whether marking, written records and draft feedback are inside the rate, whether the quoted figure includes VAT, what the cancellation window is, and whether unused sessions carry forward. Every one of these has changed an invoice for somebody in this market.

  5. 05

Review the spend against the component

At the end of a block the question is whether the component that was weak has improved, not whether the sessions were pleasant. Where it has not, the right move is usually a different approach rather than more hours. Stopping is a legitimate outcome and should be on the table from the beginning.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Figures with sources attached

Every AED band on this page names the provider or survey that published it and the year. Three of the most visible pages in this market publish no price at all and two quote in dollars, so a sourced band in the local currency is the minimum a parent should expect before comparing quotes.

Priced by task, so quotes compare

The hour is not a standard unit, because marking and written feedback are inside it for some providers and extra for others. Pricing by task lets you put two offers side by side and see which rows each one actually covers.

No travel in the rate

Sessions run online in Gulf Standard Time, so the same teaching costs the same whether you are in Al Karamah or Madinat Zayed. In-home quotes in this emirate vary with distance because unbillable travel has to be recovered somewhere.

Blocks that end on a date

Investigation and technique support are scoped and finish. Nothing renews by default. A provider whose arrangement has no natural end point has an incentive worth noticing when the component you were worried about has already improved.

The free options named

School clinics, the assessment-objective breakdown, official material through the coordinator, cold retrieval and a study group that marks against the criteria all cost nothing. Paid hours are worth buying for what those cannot do, and a page that hides them is selling rather than advising.

No invented figures about ourselves

No success rate, no average grade improvement, no star rating appears here. Market bands describe the market. Our own tuition is quoted on enquiry after the trial, which is a smaller claim than a headline price and a more honest one.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

What is a realistic monthly budget for Standard Level Biology support in Abu Dhabi?+

Bestimate's 2026 estimates for weekly one-hour sessions run AED 240-600 a month at the budget end, AED 600-1,200 in the middle tier and AED 1,000-2,000 or above for specialist exam-year support. Published packages in this market include AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599-1,799 a month for four in-home two-hour sessions. Those are other providers' figures, cited with their year. Which band you need depends on the component that is weak, and a scoped block often costs less overall than any monthly figure.

Why do quoted hourly rates in Abu Dhabi vary from AED 45 to AED 650?+

Because the ends of that range are not selling the same hour. At AED 45-65, as EdFlik publishes, you are usually buying online teaching time from a university-level tutor, frequently in a group, with no marking. At AED 650, as BartyED publishes, you are buying a named premium tutor. In the middle, Unitors publishes IB tuition from AED 200 and TutorChase AED 270 for specialists. Travel sits inside in-home rates whether itemised or not, which is why the in-home band overlaps the specialist band.

Is a package cheaper than paying for each session?+

Sometimes, and the saving is often smaller than the risk. Ask three questions before buying one: does it expire, do unused sessions carry forward, and what happens if the tutor turns out to be the wrong match in week two. A monthly package that looks competitive may exclude the two things worth paying for, marking and written feedback. Where a package genuinely covers those and the arrangement is already working, the discount is real. Where it is bought before the first session, you are pre-paying for an untested match.

What should be inside the hour, and what do providers charge extra for?+

At a minimum the hour should include teaching and the marking of work produced in it. Commonly charged separately elsewhere: marking written work set between sessions, written progress records, feedback on investigation drafts, and any report sent to parents. For biology specifically, marking is the item that matters most, because extended answers improve through marked attempts and marking takes a tutor roughly as long as teaching. An hour priced to exclude it will exclude it, and the student will write less as a result.

Does an in-home biology tutor in Abu Dhabi cost more than the same hour online?+

Generally yes, and the difference is travel. Published bands put in-home one-to-one at AED 180-350 in Bestimate's 2026 table, with reported rates to AED 500 for scarce subjects, against AED 150-300 for qualified online subject tutors. A round trip to Al Shamkha, Al Reef or Hydra Village in late-afternoon traffic can approach ninety minutes of unbillable time, which is recovered in the rate or in a minimum session length. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Abu Dhabi or anywhere in the UAE; in-home visits are a service we run only in India.

How many hours does the scientific investigation realistically need?+

For a Standard Level student, plan on one to two hours narrowing the research question, two to three on the statistics needed to process their own data, and three to four spread across dated drafts. At published market bands that is roughly AED 900-2,700 in total, for a component worth 20 per cent of the grade with a deadline you can see coming. It is the most predictable spend in the course. The research question stage is the part families skip and the part that caps the mark before any data exist.

Is a university student at a lower rate a false economy for Standard Level Biology?+

Not necessarily, and it depends on the job. For retrieval practice, keeping a student company through revision, or working through content they missed, a capable biology undergraduate at the lower published bands can be good value. For marking extended answers against published criteria, for investigation statistics, or for diagnosing why a hard-working student is stuck at 4, the criteria knowledge is the product and that is what the specialist bands are charging for. Buying the cheaper hour for the harder job is where most of the waste in this market happens.

Do prices quoted for tutoring in Abu Dhabi include VAT?+

Ask, and get the answer in writing on the quote. This page does not state the UAE VAT treatment of tuition fees, because that would require a Federal Tax Authority citation rather than a confident assertion, and several pages in this market assert a position without one. What you can rely on is a written quote that says whether the figure is inclusive. If a provider cannot answer that question clearly, treat it the way you would treat vagueness about any other part of the invoice.

Should we pay for group classes instead of one-to-one Standard Level biology?+

Group teaching is cheaper per student and suits content coverage, structured revision and keeping pace. It does not suit the two things that usually move a stalled biology grade, which are individual marking of extended answers and work on one student's own investigation data. A sensible hybrid exists: group or self-directed work for content, a small number of one-to-one hours for marking and the investigation. Paying one-to-one rates for content a group session could deliver is the opposite trade and the more expensive mistake.

When in the two years is biology support worth the most per dirham?+

Two windows. The first is whenever the investigation research question is being decided, because an unanswerable question caps the mark on 20 per cent of the grade and costs an hour or two to fix. The second is the four to six weeks before mocks in DP2, when written technique and data-based practice address the components carrying the most marks. The worst value is broad content revision bought early and open-endedly, which duplicates teaching the school is already delivering across 150 hours.

What can we do for nothing before paying anybody?+

Ask the school for the assessment-objective breakdown behind the last grade, for the class position against the scheme of work, and for the internal investigation deadlines. Find out whether the school runs biology clinics, because students frequently do not attend ones nobody at home knew about. Ask the coordinator what official material your child can access. Then set up five cold retrieval questions a day and one extended answer a week compared against the published criteria. A study group of three marking each other's answers is close to free and genuinely effective.

Does a tutor described as an examiner justify a higher rate?+

Only if the status can be evidenced, and even then it buys less than the marketing implies. Examiner experience does not provide access to unreleased papers, grade boundaries or marking decisions, and anyone suggesting otherwise is making a claim worth scrutinising. What examiner experience can genuinely bring is fluency with how criteria are applied, which is valuable for extended answers and investigation marking. Ask what the status is, when it applied and to which component, then judge the premium on the answer rather than on the label.

How does tutoring cost compare with what we already pay in school fees?+

Proportionally it is small for a scoped block and substantial for two years of weekly sessions. A defined investigation block plus a short technique block, at published market bands, is a modest addition that targets 20 per cent of one subject grade and the largest written component. Two years of weekly one-to-one in a single subject approaches a meaningful share of a year's fees. Note that the 2026-27 fee freeze KHDA announced applies to Dubai schools, not to Abu Dhabi, where fees are a matter for ADEK and the school.

If we stop biology sessions for a month during school examinations, what happens to the money?+

Confirm it in writing before the first session, because practice varies widely. Reasonable terms allow a stated notice period for cancellation, carry a cancelled session forward rather than lapsing it, and permit a pause for school examination weeks or travel without losing a package. During Ramadan most Abu Dhabi families move sessions to post-Iftar evenings or weekend mornings, and that should be a calendar change rather than a chargeable event. Ask specifically what happens to unused sessions at the end of a term.

Is Standard Level Biology cheaper to support than Higher Level?+

Modestly, and less than families expect. The hourly bands overlap heavily, because the scarcity premium attaches to the tutor's subject depth rather than to the level being taught. What genuinely differs is volume: Standard Level has fewer taught hours and less depth to cover, so content work is shorter. The investigation costs much the same at both levels, since it is marked against the same criteria and needs the same statistics. If a provider quotes a large discount purely for Standard Level, ask what is being left out.

Get the task list before you get the quote

The useful order is diagnosis, then task list, then price. Send the last paper your child sat and say what you are willing to spend. The free 45-minute session identifies which rows of the task table are actually needed, estimates the hours each would take, and tells you if the answer is fewer hours than you planned for. No card details are required to book it. If the conclusion is one investigation block and four weeks of marked writing rather than a two-year commitment, you will have the comparison in writing and can take it to any provider you like.
