Cambridge IGCSE Global Perspectives 0457 Tutor in Abu Dhabi

A Cambridge IGCSE Global Perspectives 0457 tutor in Abu Dhabi is usually called in for the Individual Report rather than for the exam, and that tells you where the subject is difficult. 0457 asks a fifteen-year-old to build a research question, find real evidence on both sides of it, and then reflect honestly on their own thinking. This page sets out what each of the three components rewards, where marks go missing, and what a tutor may and may not touch. Lessons run online, one-to-one.

  • Research questions narrowed until they have two defensible sides
  • Source evaluation taught, so sources are weighed rather than listed
  • Drafts read and questioned; the student authors every submitted word
  • Sessions online over live video, timed to the Abu Dhabi school week

A subject that marks thinking, and why that is harder to teach

Global Perspectives does not have a body of content to learn, and that is why students who revise well can still score badly on it. There is no syllabus of facts to memorise. Cambridge assesses a set of skills instead: research, analysis, evaluation, reflection, collaboration and communication. A student is asked to take a global issue, turn it into a question that can actually be argued, find evidence from different perspectives, weigh that evidence rather than collect it, and then say what they now think and why they changed their mind. Nothing about that is revisable in the usual sense.

The assessment comes in three parts. There is a written examination built on source material supplied in the paper. There is an Individual Report of 1,500 to 2,000 words, researched and written by the student on a global topic. And there is a Team Project, which produces a collaborative outcome plus an individual Reflective Paper of 750 to 1,000 words. Two of those three are coursework, which makes 0457 unusual among the IGCSEs Abu Dhabi students take and makes the academic-honesty boundary a live question rather than a theoretical one.

Most families contact a tutor at one of two moments. The first is when a research question has been chosen and is clearly unworkable, usually because it has only one answer or because the evidence for it does not exist in English at a Year 10 reading level. The second is after a draft comes back with a comment like needs more analysis, which tells the student nothing they can act on. Both are fixable, and both are fixed by questions rather than by rewriting.

What a tutor can legitimately do on a coursework subject is narrower than on an exam subject, and it should be stated before any money changes hands. A tutor may teach research method, show what evaluation looks like on a different topic, read a draft and ask the questions a reader would ask, and point out where a claim has no support. A tutor does not contribute sentences to an assessed submission, does not edit a draft until the authorship is unclear, and does not supply sources the student has not read. That is not caution for its own sake; coursework malpractice is an expulsion risk for the student, not a service-level problem for the provider.

Delivery in the UAE is online, one-to-one, over live video with screens shared, and IB Gram does not make home visits in Abu Dhabi. For this subject the format suits the work: a draft on a shared screen with a cursor moving through it, the tutor asking what the evidence for a given sentence is, is exactly the right shape for teaching 0457. Abu Dhabi private schools are licensed and inspected by ADEK, and because internal coursework deadlines are set by the school rather than by Cambridge, the first thing a tutor should ask for is the school's own 0457 calendar.

At a glance

  • No content syllabus: research, analysis, evaluation, reflection, collaboration and communication
  • Individual Report 1,500 to 2,000 words; Reflective Paper 750 to 1,000 words
  • Two of the three components are coursework, so honesty rules apply throughout
  • The written paper supplies its own sources; opinion without them scores little
  • Internal deadlines come from the school, not from Cambridge
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

0457 sits inside a Cambridge skills pathway that starts earlier and continues well beyond IGCSE. Knowing where a student entered it explains a lot about how comfortable they are with the research demand.

Cambridge IGCSE Global Perspectives

Three components: a written examination based on supplied sources, an Individual Report of 1,500 to 2,000 words on a global topic built around a research question, and a Team Project producing a collaborative outcome plus a Reflective Paper of 750 to 1,000 words. Assessment is of skills rather than recalled content.

In Abu Dhabi, 0457 is sometimes a free-standing option and sometimes a subject the whole year group takes, which changes the teaching entirely. Where a full cohort sits it, one teacher may be supervising well over a hundred Individual Reports, and the per-student feedback a draft receives is correspondingly thin. That is the usual reason an Abu Dhabi family looks outside the school for help with this subject rather than with any other.

Lower SecondaryAges 11-14 · Years 7-9

Cambridge Lower Secondary Global Perspectives

The preparatory course, built around challenges rather than assessed components. Students who followed it arrive at 0457 already used to framing questions, reading for perspective and reflecting in writing. Students who did not meet research as a taught skill until Year 10 are at a real disadvantage and need that groundwork laid rather than assumed.

Not every Abu Dhabi school runs the Lower Secondary version, and students who moved into the emirate at the start of Year 10 frequently have no prior exposure to it at all. A tutor should establish that in the first session, because a student with three years of practice and a student with none need completely different first months.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

IB Middle Years Programme, Individuals and Societies

The nearest equivalent in the IB sector, with interdisciplinary units and an independent project in the final year. Students transferring from an MYP school into a Cambridge school part-way through Year 10 usually have the research habits and lack familiarity with the specific 0457 criteria, which is a far easier gap to close than the reverse.

Abu Dhabi has a substantial IB sector alongside its Cambridge schools, and movement between the two at fourteen or fifteen is common here. A student arriving from MYP tends to over-write: their previous assessment rewarded breadth, and 0457 rewards a tight question answered with evidence.

IB Diploma Theory of Knowledge and Extended Essay

Where 0457 pays off for students who move into an IB Diploma sixth form. The Extended Essay is a longer version of the same discipline, a research question answered with evidence and a defended conclusion, and Theory of Knowledge extends the perspective work. Students who did 0457 properly at sixteen find both less alarming at seventeen.

Several Abu Dhabi schools run a Cambridge lower school and an IB Diploma sixth form in the same building, so this transition happens inside one campus. Families planning it should treat 0457 as the rehearsal rather than as a filler subject, because the skills are the ones the Diploma will assess twice.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

0457 bookings often sit alongside a second subject, usually one that shares the writing demand. The list below is what Abu Dhabi families most commonly combine with it.

Global Perspectives (0457)

Cambridge IGCSE

The subject of this page. Sessions work on narrowing a research question, evaluating sources rather than listing them, structuring an argument that reaches a conclusion, and reflecting on process in a way the criteria recognise.

English as a First Language (0500)

Cambridge IGCSE

The most useful pairing. 0457 is assessed through extended writing, and students who cannot control a paragraph lose marks on arguments they have actually understood. Directed writing work transfers straight into the Individual Report.

English as a Second Language (0510)

Cambridge IGCSE

Many Abu Dhabi candidates sit 0510 alongside 0457, and the overlap is the reading paper's skill of identifying attitude and implication in a text. That is the same move the 0457 written paper asks for when it says identify the perspective.

Geography (0460)

Cambridge IGCSE

Shares several 0457 topic areas, including water, population and sustainable development, and brings the case-study habit with it. A student carrying both can often reuse research for one in the other, provided nothing written is reused verbatim.

History (0470)

Cambridge IGCSE

The strongest source-handling overlap. 0470 teaches students to ask who produced a source and why, which is precisely the skill the 0457 written paper rewards and the one weaker candidates never develop.

Environmental Management (0680)

Cambridge IGCSE

Overlaps 0457 on energy, water, fisheries and natural hazards, and supplies the technical grounding that makes a sustainability-themed Individual Report credible rather than general. Useful where a student's chosen topic is environmental.

Sociology (0495)

Cambridge IGCSE

Shares the demand for evidence-based evaluation of social issues, and its research-methods unit teaches sampling, bias and reliability explicitly. Students who have met those terms formally handle 0457 source evaluation with far more confidence.

Business Studies (0450)

Cambridge IGCSE

Contributes the habit of reaching a judgement and justifying it against a rejected alternative, which is the structural weakness in most Individual Report conclusions. The transfer runs in both directions.

Information and Communication Technology (0417)

Cambridge IGCSE

Practical rather than conceptual overlap: searching effectively, managing references, and presenting data honestly in a report. Students with weak search technique spend hours finding sources that a taught approach would surface in minutes.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

0457 support divides cleanly by component, because the three parts need different kinds of help at different points in the year.

Research and question-framing block

The first four to six sessions for a student starting their Individual Report. Work goes on turning a topic into a question with two defensible sides, building a source log, and reading for perspective rather than for information. It is the cheapest intervention available in this subject and the one that prevents most later trouble.

  • A topic narrowed to a question that can actually be argued
  • Four to six sources read, logged and summarised by the student
  • Source evaluation taught explicitly: who made it, when, and why
  • Referencing set up at the start rather than retrofitted at the end

Draft review sessions

Scheduled around the school's own coursework deadlines. The student brings a draft, the tutor reads it on screen and asks the questions a reader would ask: what is the evidence for this, whose perspective is this, what would someone who disagrees say. The student then makes the changes. Nothing is rewritten for them.

  • Booked to land before the school's internal deadline, not after it
  • Questions rather than corrections, so the authorship stays clear
  • Criteria explained in the student's own draft, not in the abstract
  • A written summary of what the student chose to change

Written paper source drill

Timed practice on the examined component, using past papers through the school. Students learn to read a source for its perspective in under two minutes, to answer with the source rather than with their own view, and to manage the clock across the paper. This is conventional exam coaching and sits outside the coursework honesty question entirely.

  • Timed responses to supplied source material
  • Perspective identification drilled until it is automatic
  • Evaluation language practised: reliability, sufficiency, relevance
  • Marked against the published criteria between sessions

Team Project and reflection coaching

For the component students find hardest to be marked on, because part of it depends on other people. Sessions work on separating the team's outcome from the student's own contribution, keeping a contemporaneous record of what they did, and writing a Reflective Paper that reflects rather than summarises.

  • A running log of the student's own contribution, kept as it happens
  • The difference between describing the project and reflecting on it
  • What to do when a team member does not deliver
  • Reflection structured around what changed in the student's thinking

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Abu Dhabi

01

The three components, and what each one is actually marking

Students arrive at 0457 expecting a subject and find a set of skills. The three components test those skills in different combinations, and a student can be strong in one and weak in another without any inconsistency. A confident speaker can struggle with the written paper. A careful researcher can produce a Reflective Paper that summarises instead of reflecting. Treating 0457 as one thing is the first planning error, and it leads to the familiar outcome where extra effort goes into the component that was already fine.

The written examination supplies its own source material. That single fact changes how it should be revised: there is no content to learn, so the preparation is procedural. A student needs to read a source quickly, identify whose perspective it represents, say something about how far it can be relied on, and answer using it rather than around it. Candidates who write what they personally think about the issue, however sensibly, leave most of the available marks untouched.

The Individual Report is where the subject is won or lost. A research question with two defensible sides produces a report that can analyse; a question with one answer produces a description with a conclusion bolted on. Supervisors see this pattern every year and the fix sits entirely at the start, which is why question framing deserves four sessions rather than one conversation. Evidence has to come from sources the student has actually read, be attributed, and be weighed rather than stacked.

The Team Project is the component families worry about most, because part of the mark depends on other people. In practice the examinable part is the student's own contribution and their reflection on it, so the protective habit is a contemporaneous record: what they did, when, what they changed and why. A student who keeps that log can write an honest Reflective Paper even when the team underperformed, and a student who keeps nothing cannot reconstruct one.

02

The written paper rewards source handling, not opinion

  • Everything needed is in the paper; no outside content is required
  • Perspective identified in one sentence, within two minutes of reading
  • Evaluation framed as sufficiency, relevance and reliability
  • Timed practice, with the paper stopped at the end of the allowed time

The examined component is the part of 0457 a tutor can coach conventionally, because it behaves like any other source-based paper. Everything the student needs is in front of them. The work is procedural: read, locate the perspective, assess the evidence, answer using what the paper gave you. A student who treats it as a general-knowledge test about global issues will write confidently and score poorly, and that mismatch is almost always invisible to them until a mock comes back.

Perspective identification is the first habit to build. A source has an author, a date, a purpose and an audience, and each of those shapes what it claims. A student should be able to say, in one sentence and within two minutes of reading, whose view this represents and what that view is likely to leave out. This is identical to the skill History teaches at IGCSE, which is why students carrying 0470 alongside 0457 tend to find the written paper straightforward while their classmates find it mystifying.

Evaluation language is the second. Vague praise or dismissal of a source scores nothing; specific judgement scores. Is the evidence sufficient for the claim being made? Is it relevant to the question asked, or relevant to a neighbouring question? Can it be relied on, and on what basis, given who produced it and when? Those three moves, practised on a dozen sources, become a usable framework rather than vocabulary to repeat.

The third element is timing, which defeats more candidates than either of the others. The paper supplies more material than can be exhaustively analysed, so the examinable skill includes deciding quickly what to use. Timed practice is the only way that develops, and it needs to be timed properly, with the clock running and the paper put away at the end rather than finished at leisure.

03

The Individual Report: the question does most of the work

Of every hour a tutor spends on 0457 coursework, the first four are worth the most, because they go on the research question. A workable 0457 question has three properties. It can be answered with evidence rather than with values alone. It has at least two positions that a reasonable person could hold. And the evidence for both positions exists, in English, at a level a Year 10 student can read and summarise. A question that fails any of those three will produce a weak report no matter how much work goes into it afterwards.

The common failures are predictable. Questions that are really statements, where the answer is contained in the wording. Questions so broad that no amount of evidence could settle them. Questions about a global issue with no identifiable disagreement, where every source says the same thing and the report becomes a long summary. And questions where the student has a strong prior view and is really looking for support rather than for evidence, which produces a one-sided report that cannot access the higher criteria.

Once the question holds, the method is mechanical and teachable. Build a source log as you read, with the author, the date, the position and a one-line summary for each entry. Group the sources by perspective rather than by topic, which makes the structure of the report obvious. Write the perspectives before writing the conclusion, so the conclusion follows from the evidence instead of being written first and defended afterwards. Keep the word count in mind from the start, because 1,500 to 2,000 words is less room than students expect once two perspectives have been properly evidenced.

What a tutor does with a draft is read it and ask questions. What is the evidence for this sentence? Whose perspective is this paragraph presenting? What would somebody who disagrees say, and have you said it? Where did this figure come from? Those questions produce a better report written entirely by the student. Supplying the improved sentence instead would be faster, would be worth less, and would put the student's entry at risk.

04

Where 0457 candidates reliably lose marks

  • Description without a working because or therefore
  • Assertions attributed to nobody: most people believe, studies show
  • An opposing view presented in its weakest form so it can be dismissed
  • A conclusion that calls the issue complex and decides nothing
  • Reflection written as a summary of what the team did

The losses in this subject repeat so consistently across cohorts that they can be listed, which is useful for a family deciding whether tutoring is worth it. None of them is caused by lack of effort. Most are caused by nobody having named the specific habit the criteria reward, and all of them respond to being named.

The largest single loss is description in place of analysis. A student writes what is happening about an issue and stops there. Analysis means taking a claim and asking why it holds, what follows from it, and whether the evidence supports it that far. The test a student can apply themselves is simple: does this paragraph contain a because or a therefore that is doing real work? If not, it is description, whatever its length.

The second is unsupported assertion. Statements like most people believe or studies show, with no study and no indication of who the most people are. The criteria reward evidence attributed to a source the student has read. The habit that fixes it is the source log, because a claim written while looking at a logged source gets attributed automatically, and a claim written from memory does not.

The third is one-sidedness. A report that presents a perspective and then presents a weak version of the opposing view, built so it can be dismissed. Markers notice, and the evaluation criteria cannot be met this way. The fourth is a conclusion that decides nothing, restating both sides and declaring the issue complex. Complexity is not a conclusion. The fifth is reflection that is actually summary, which costs marks specifically in the Reflective Paper: the question is what changed in your thinking and why, not what the project involved.

05

The honesty line on a coursework subject, stated plainly

0457 is one of the few IGCSEs where the academic-honesty question is real rather than hypothetical, because two of its three components are produced away from an exam hall. Every family paying for help with this subject deserves to know exactly where the line sits, and any provider that is vague about it should be read as vague on purpose. The surrounding market is not clean: the competitor research behind these pages found a site selling completed Internal Assessments outright.

What a tutor may do is substantial. Teach research method. Teach source evaluation on material unrelated to the student's own topic. Explain each criterion in plain language and show what meeting it looks like. Read a draft and ask the questions a thoughtful reader would ask. Point to a paragraph and say this claim has no evidence, or this is description. Model a structure on a different question entirely and let the student build their own. Set and mark timed practice for the examined component, which is ordinary exam coaching.

What a tutor may not do is equally clear. No sentences contributed to a submitted piece. No editing that leaves the authorship unclear, which includes line-by-line rewriting dressed up as proofreading. No sources handed over that the student has not read and logged themselves. No drafting of a research question in the student's name without the student doing the narrowing. No sitting alongside a student during a school-supervised session. The consequence of crossing any of these falls on the student as a malpractice finding, not on the tutor, and that asymmetry is the whole reason to be strict about it.

Published exam material gets the same treatment. A tutor references the Cambridge syllabus and past papers and points you to cambridgeinternational.org to obtain them through your child's school. Nothing is supplied as a download. Reproducing board material is a copyright matter, and with unreleased material it becomes an exposure that again lands on the candidate.

06

Topics that read differently from Abu Dhabi

  • Desalination: cost, energy intensity and marine effects, all documented
  • Energy transition set against a hydrocarbon economy, a real tension
  • Migration and demographic change, with published data available
  • Mangroves, protected wetlands and Gulf fisheries as local case material

The syllabus topic list is global, and a student in Abu Dhabi has first-hand access to several of the issues on it in a way a student in a temperate, water-rich country does not. That matters for the Individual Report, because a question grounded in something the student can observe and check produces better evidence handling than one assembled entirely from search results.

Water is the clearest example. The UAE meets much of its demand through desalination, which makes questions about the cost, the energy intensity and the marine effects of that choice concrete rather than abstract. A student here can set a desalination question against agricultural water use or against conservation policy and find real material on both sides. Energy transition works the same way: large-scale solar deployment and the emirate's hydrocarbon economy sit side by side, which is a genuine tension rather than a manufactured one, and tension is what an arguable question needs.

Changing communities and migration are equally available. The UAE's population composition is unusual by any international standard, and questions about labour migration, remittances, integration or demographic planning can be built on published data rather than on impressions. Students should take particular care here to attribute claims and to represent perspectives fairly, which is good practice in any case and is also simply the right way to write about the society you live in.

Biodiversity, coastal management and fisheries round out the obvious set. Mangrove systems along the Abu Dhabi coast, protected wetland habitats inland and Gulf fisheries pressures all generate questions with two defensible sides and accessible evidence. The practical advice to a student choosing a topic is to pick something they can see, then find the disagreement about it. The disagreement is the question.

07

Who regulates your child's school, and why the 0457 calendar varies

Coursework deadlines on this subject come from the school, not from Cambridge, so the regulatory map matters more here than on an exam-only subject. Each emirate has its own authority, and school calendars, internal assessment schedules and reporting cycles follow the emirate rather than a national standard. Advice written for a Dubai parent therefore does not transfer cleanly to Abu Dhabi, and a tutor planning around the wrong calendar will schedule draft reviews after the deadline they were meant to precede.

In Abu Dhabi and Al Ain the authority is ADEK, the Department of Education and Knowledge, which supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate. Dubai's is the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education there. Sharjah's private education authority and Ras Al Khaimah's Department of Knowledge both regulate private education in their emirates and go further than inspection: they approve tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods. For Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah, the federal Ministry of Education plays the supervising role.

Nothing in that list is a claim about IB Gram's status. These are the bodies that license and inspect schools, and no tutoring provider is approved, accredited or endorsed by any of them. A separate permit regime applies to tutoring itself: individuals giving private lessons in the UAE need the MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, which is granted free of charge for two years and is applied for through MoHRE's own channels. Operating without one carries fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule is published, so no figure is quoted here.

One Abu Dhabi-specific point affects who you may hire. Professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff in this emirate prohibit teachers from giving paid private tuition to students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE permit's code of conduct carries a similar bar. That is press-reported rather than quoted from the policy document, so verify it against current ADEK guidance. The practical effect is that your child's own 0457 supervisor is not available as a paid tutor, which is in any case the right outcome on a coursework subject.

A 0457 year counted backwards from the exam series

Coursework subjects fail on scheduling more often than on ability, and 0457 fails on it more than most because two components have internal deadlines that arrive while the student is also sitting mocks in five other subjects. Counting the year backwards from the exam series, rather than forwards from September, makes the pressure points visible early enough to do something about them.

The fixed point at the far end is set by Cambridge and administered by the school. Cambridge runs its IGCSE exams in a June series and a November series, and final entries are made by the school months before the papers. Centres are also allocated to one of six administrative zones, and the exams officer must use the timetable version for the centre's zone; Cambridge states it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after the wrong zone timetable was used. That is the school's job, not the family's, but it is worth confirming which zone and which series apply.

Everything before that is set by the school's own 0457 calendar, which is the document a tutor should ask for in the first session. It will carry a date for topic approval, one or more draft deadlines for the Individual Report, a window for the Team Project outcome, and a final submission date. Draft reviews need to be booked to land before those dates with enough margin for the student to act on them, which in practice means ten days rather than two.

The table below sets out a workable sequence. Dates are deliberately absent, because the school sets them and they differ between Abu Dhabi schools in the same year. What is stable is the order, and the order is what families get wrong: students who start the Individual Report after the mocks rather than before them lose the only quiet weeks the year contains.

What a 0457 session looks like, and how to start one

  • Send the school's coursework calendar, the current question and any draft
  • The student talks and decides; the tutor asks and marks
  • Weekly through drafting, then weekly again for timed paper practice
  • One free trial lesson, spent on the real question rather than on an interview

A useful session on this subject looks less like a lesson than like a supervision. The student talks more than the tutor. A draft or a source sits on the shared screen, and the hour is spent interrogating it: what is this claim resting on, whose view is this, what is missing, what would the other side say. The student takes notes on their own document and leaves with a list of changes they decided to make. That is deliberate, because a student who has argued their way to a change will make it properly, and one who was handed a correction will paste it.

The first session is diagnostic and needs material to work on. The most useful things to send beforehand are the school's 0457 coursework calendar, the research question as it currently stands, and whatever draft or source notes exist, even if they are rough. A teacher comment, however brief, is also useful: needs more analysis tells a tutor exactly which criterion is being missed, even though it tells the student nothing.

After that a normal pattern is weekly through the research and drafting phase, then fortnightly once the report is submitted, then weekly again for timed written-paper practice in the final stretch. A free trial lesson comes first, one session, with no charge, and it is spent on the student's actual question rather than on an interview. What you get afterwards is a written note on whether the question will hold, what the draft is missing against the criteria, and a realistic number of sessions.

Two honest caveats belong here. Nobody can promise a grade on a skills-assessed subject with a team component, and any provider offering one is describing their sales process rather than your child's work. And 0457 specialists are a smaller pool than maths or science tutors, so if nothing is free in the slot you need you will be told that rather than offered a general humanities tutor who has never read the criteria.

Abu Dhabi communities differ in what a weekday evening looks like, and for a coursework subject the session has to land at a time when a student can still think. The notes below reflect what is realistically bookable.

Saadiyat Island

Short commutes and a cluster of newer campuses. Research-heavy sessions work well here in the late afternoon, and students have genuinely useful local material within reach for culture, heritage and tourism topics.

Al Raha Beach and Al Zeina

Coastal communities beside the mangroves, which makes biodiversity and coastal management a credible first-hand topic rather than a textbook one. Sessions are usually single weekly hours with reading set in between.

Yas Island

A high proportion of families who arrived mid-key-stage, so more students meeting research as a taught skill for the first time in Year 10. First months here go on question framing rather than on draft polishing.

Masdar City and Khalifa City

Energy transition and sustainable urban design are visible from the window here, which gives students a specific, checkable case to build a question around instead of a generic one about renewables.

Al Reem Island

Dense apartment living with long causeway traffic at the end of the school day. A 6pm or 6.30pm start is the first realistic one, and online delivery is what makes that time workable at all.

Al Mushrif and Al Bateen

Established neighbourhoods near the emirate's longest-running British schools, where 0457 is more often a chosen option than a whole-cohort subject. Students here tend to arrive with a draft and a vague teacher comment.

Al Falah and Al Shamkha

Mainland communities with long school runs and later available slots. Evening sessions after 7pm Gulf Standard Time are standard, and a weekly rhythm matters more here than session length.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Abu Dhabi

Saadiyat, Yas and Al Raha campuses

Newer schools, several of which run 0457 as a whole-cohort subject in Year 10. Large numbers of Individual Reports under one supervisor means draft feedback arrives late and briefly, which is the single most common trigger for an outside booking in this subject.

  • Cranleigh Abu Dhabi
  • West Yas Academy
  • Raha International School
  • Al Yasmina Academy
  • Repton School Abu Dhabi

Island and Al Mushrif schools

Longer-established British-curriculum campuses where 0457 is usually an option rather than a requirement. Students here are self-selected into the subject and tend to be strong writers whose weakness is evidence rather than expression.

  • The British School Al Khubairat
  • Al Bateen Academy
  • Brighton College Abu Dhabi
  • The British International School Abu Dhabi
  • Abu Dhabi International School

Khalifa City and mainland schools

Large year groups with substantial mid-year intake, so a single 0457 class can contain students with three years of prior skills work and students with none. Differentiated support outside the classroom is often the only way the second group catches up.

  • Reach British School
  • Amity International School Abu Dhabi
  • Mamoura British Academy
  • GEMS American Academy - Abu Dhabi
  • Merryland International School

Schools are named only to describe the Abu Dhabi 0457 picture. IB Gram has no affiliation with, endorsement from, or commercial relationship with any school mentioned.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the question and the school calendar

Two documents make a first session productive: the research question as it currently stands, and the school's own 0457 deadline schedule. Everything a tutor plans depends on those dates, because draft reviews have to land before internal deadlines rather than after them.

  2. 02

Free trial lesson on the real question

One session, no charge, spent testing whether the student's question can actually be argued and whether the evidence exists at a readable level. That is a more useful hour than any interview, and it tells both sides whether the work needed is four sessions or fourteen.

  3. 03

A written note on the criteria being missed

After the trial you get a short note naming which assessment criteria the current draft or plan does not reach, in plain language rather than in syllabus wording. The number of sessions and the rate follow from that, because question repair and draft review are different amounts of work.

  4. 04

Sessions timed to the school's deadlines

Draft reviews are booked ten days before an internal deadline, not two, so the student has room to act on what the session produced. Where the school's dates move, which happens, the schedule moves with them rather than the other way round.

  5. 05

The student writes, the tutor questions

Every session ends with the student holding a list of changes they decided on. Nothing is rewritten for them and no sentences are supplied, because the submission has to be theirs and a malpractice finding would land on the candidate.

  6. 06

    Switch to the examined component

Once coursework is submitted, the work changes shape entirely: timed responses to source material, marked against the published criteria, with perspective identification drilled until it is quick. This part is conventional exam coaching and it is where the final weeks should go.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The honesty line is written down

On a subject with two coursework components, a provider that will not state exactly what it will and will not touch is telling you something. What a tutor here does is teach, question and mark. What it does not do is contribute sentences to a submission, because the malpractice consequence falls on the student.

The question gets the first four hours

A research question with two defensible sides and accessible evidence makes a good report possible; one without makes a good report impossible however hard the student works. Front-loading those sessions is the cheapest intervention available in 0457 and the one schools have least time for.

Built around the school's calendar

Internal coursework deadlines come from the school, not from Cambridge, and they differ between Abu Dhabi schools in the same year. Sessions are scheduled against that document so draft reviews arrive in time to be useful rather than as a post-mortem.

Online, stated plainly

UAE lessons run one-to-one over live video with screens shared, which suits a subject taught by reading a draft together. IB Gram does not make home visits in Abu Dhabi; in-home tutoring is offered only in India, and no page here should be read as suggesting otherwise.

Criteria explained in the student's own work

Assessment criteria mean nothing read in the abstract and a great deal when pointed at a specific paragraph of the student's own draft. Sessions work that way round, which is why students come out able to self-check rather than dependent on the next review.

No claims that cannot be kept

No grade promises on a skills-assessed subject with a team component. No claimed approval from Cambridge, ADEK or any other authority, because none is held. If no 0457 specialist is free in the slot you need, you are told so rather than handed a substitute.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

What does Cambridge IGCSE Global Perspectives 0457 actually test?+

Skills rather than content. Cambridge assesses research, analysis, evaluation, reflection, collaboration and communication across three components: a written examination built on source material supplied in the paper, an Individual Report of 1,500 to 2,000 words on a global topic, and a Team Project that produces a collaborative outcome plus a Reflective Paper of 750 to 1,000 words. There is no body of facts to memorise, which is why students who revise diligently can still score poorly. The work is learning to frame an arguable question, weigh evidence from different perspectives, and reflect honestly on their own thinking.

Can a tutor help with the Individual Report without writing any of it?+

That is the only form of help that is legitimate, and it is more useful than the alternative. A tutor teaches research method, explains each criterion against the student's own paragraphs, reads a draft and asks the questions a reader would ask, and points out where a claim has no evidence or where description is standing in for analysis. The student then makes every change themselves. Contributing sentences, rewriting line by line as proofreading, or supplying sources the student has not read all cross into malpractice, and the consequence of a finding falls on the candidate rather than on the provider.

How long should the 0457 Individual Report be?+

Between 1,500 and 2,000 words on the current syllabus, and students consistently underestimate how little room that is. Two perspectives properly evidenced, a research question set up clearly, and a conclusion that actually decides something will fill it without any padding. The practical consequence is that the question has to be narrow from the start: broad questions produce reports that spend 1,200 words on background and then present one thin perspective. Confirm the word range in the syllabus version for your child's exam series, since Cambridge does revise these documents between series.

Is Global Perspectives a soft option compared with History or Geography?+

It is marked on harder things, not easier ones. History and Geography reward content a diligent student can learn; 0457 rewards judgement, which cannot be revised in the same way. A student who writes fluently and thinks carefully usually does well. A student who relies on memorised material and dislikes ambiguity often finds it the hardest subject on their timetable, because there is nothing to fall back on. It is also the only one of the three with coursework deadlines landing in the middle of the mock season, which makes it an organisational demand as well as an academic one.

My son has opinions but cannot find evidence. Is that teachable?+

It is one of the most teachable things in the subject, and it usually takes three or four sessions. The problem is almost always search method rather than willingness: students look for material that agrees with the view they already hold, then stop. The fix is a source log built before any writing starts, with the author, date, position and a one-line summary for each entry, and a deliberate requirement to log sources on both sides of the question. Writing while looking at logged sources produces attributed claims automatically, and writing from memory produces the unsupported assertions that cost marks.

How does the Team Project get marked if the team is weak?+

The examinable part for your child is their own contribution and their reflection on it, so a weak team is survivable if a record exists. The protective habit is a contemporaneous log: what the student did, on what date, what they changed and why, kept as the project happens rather than reconstructed afterwards. A student with that log can write a Reflective Paper that is honest about what went wrong and what they learned from it, which is exactly what the reflection criteria reward. A student with no record cannot evidence their contribution at all, however much work they actually did.

What makes a good research question for the 0457 Individual Report?+

Three things, and all three have to hold. It can be answered with evidence rather than with values alone. At least two positions exist that a reasonable person could hold. And the evidence for both sides exists in English at a level a Year 10 student can read and summarise. Questions that are really statements, questions so broad nothing could settle them, and questions where every source agrees all produce weak reports regardless of effort afterwards. This is why question framing deserves several sessions rather than one conversation, and why it is the cheapest point to intervene.

Does Global Perspectives count towards the five IGCSEs for UAE equivalency?+

It counts as an accredited subject like any other. The British-track requirement published for UAE equivalency is a pass in five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade of no less than E or grade 3, together with one accredited subject at Advanced Level at no less than E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. Arabic and Islamic education are not counted among the five, which catches families out. Check current requirements on moe.gov.ae, because equivalency is a Ministry process that no tutor performs, accelerates or influences.

How does 0457 help with the IB Extended Essay later?+

It is close to a rehearsal for it. The Extended Essay asks for a research question answered with evidence and a defended conclusion, which is structurally what the Individual Report asks at a shorter length, and Theory of Knowledge extends the perspective work 0457 introduces. Students who did 0457 properly arrive in the Diploma already able to narrow a question, keep a source log and tell analysis from description. That matters in Abu Dhabi specifically, because several schools here run a Cambridge lower school and an IB Diploma sixth form on the same campus, so the transition is common.

What happens if my daughter's 0457 sources are all websites?+

Nothing automatically, but it limits what she can say. The criteria reward evaluation of sources, and a report built only on general websites gives her little to evaluate: no named author, no clear purpose, no date. Mixing source types makes the evaluation possible, and a published report, a news article with a byline, a non-governmental organisation's own material and an academic summary each invite a different judgement about reliability and purpose. Sessions work on finding that mix and on logging what each source is, not on raising the tone of the bibliography for its own sake.

Which 0457 topics work well for a student living in Abu Dhabi?+

The ones a student can observe and check. Water is the strongest: desalination's cost, energy intensity and marine effects are documented and genuinely contested. Energy transition works because large-scale solar and a hydrocarbon economy sit side by side here, which is a real tension rather than a manufactured one. Migration and demographic change have published data behind them. Coastal and biodiversity questions built on the mangrove systems and Gulf fisheries also hold up well. The advice is to pick something visible and then find the documented disagreement about it, because the disagreement is where the question lives.

How many sessions does Individual Report support usually take?+

Four to six on the question and the research method, then a draft review before each of the school's internal deadlines, which is usually two or three more. That lands most students between seven and nine sessions spread across a term, rather than a block. Starting earlier reduces the total, because repairing a question in week two costs one session and repairing it after a full draft exists costs four plus the student's goodwill. Students who begin the report after their mocks, rather than before, lose the only uncluttered weeks the year contains and need more support as a direct result.

Does the written paper need topic knowledge or just skills?+

The paper supplies its own source material, so no outside content is required and general knowledge about global issues will not rescue a weak answer. What it needs is procedure: read a source and identify whose perspective it represents within about two minutes, make a specific judgement about how far it can be relied on and whether it is sufficient for the claim, and answer using the sources rather than around them. Candidates who write what they personally think, however sensibly, leave most of the marks untouched. Timed practice with the clock actually enforced is what builds the speed element.

When in the school year should 0457 tutoring start?+

Before the research question is fixed, which usually means early in the coursework year rather than at the first draft deadline. A question that cannot be argued produces a weak report no matter how much help arrives later, and by the time a draft exists the student has invested too much to want to change direction. The second-best moment is immediately after the first teacher comment, while there is still time to act. The worst is six weeks before final submission, when the only honest advice is often to salvage rather than improve, and that is a conversation worth avoiding.

Start with the question, not the draft

If your child is taking Cambridge IGCSE Global Perspectives 0457 at an Abu Dhabi school, the most valuable hour available is the one spent testing whether their research question can actually be argued. Send the question as it stands, the school's 0457 deadline calendar, and any draft or source notes, however rough. A 0457 specialist will work on the real question in a free trial lesson, one session, and write back on whether it will hold and which criteria the current plan is missing. Sessions run one-to-one over live video. Everything submitted stays the student's own work, and a tutor here will not pretend otherwise.
