Cambridge IGCSE History 0470 Tutor in Abu Dhabi

Hiring a Cambridge IGCSE History 0470 tutor in Abu Dhabi is a spending decision as much as an academic one, so this page puts the AED figures first: what the market charges, what should be inside the hour, and which choices actually move the number. Lessons are one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time. Below that, the parts of 0470 that decide the grade: the four, six and ten-mark question pattern, the source paper, and the depth study your child's school has chosen.

  • Market AED rates published with the provider named and the date read
  • Marking between sessions is inside the hour, not charged as an extra
  • One-to-one over live video; IB Gram runs no home visits in the UAE

IB & IGCSE in Abu Dhabi

Work out what you are buying before you compare the hourly rates

Parents in Abu Dhabi comparing history tutors are usually handed one number and no detail. One provider quotes AED 120 an hour, another AED 350, and nothing in either quote explains the gap. For a subject assessed almost entirely on written answers, the gap is mostly marking. History improves when somebody reads a full essay, applies the level descriptors, writes down which level it reached and why, and then teaches the student to move it up one. That takes thirty to forty minutes of unglamorous work outside the lesson. A quote that excludes it is cheaper because it is less.

So the first section of this page is not about the Treaty of Versailles. It is a short list of questions to put to any provider, including us, and what a straight answer to each one sounds like. Does the rate include marking between sessions? Are written progress notes produced, or does feedback exist only as conversation? If a slot is cancelled at twenty-four hours, is it recoverable or lost? Does the rate rise closer to a series? Is the tutor covering the same depth study the school teaches, or a different one? Five questions, five minutes, and a quote becomes comparable.

The AED figures further down are other providers' own published rates, each attributed and dated, drawn from the market research behind this page. They are the market, not an IB Gram price list, and we deliberately do not publish a single headline rate for 0470, because a Year 10 student needing fortnightly essay feedback and a Year 11 candidate eight weeks from a series with no depth-study notes are not the same job. Our figure comes out of a consultation after a free thirty-minute trial lesson, with the number of sessions estimated in writing.

The academic half of this page is specific to 0470 rather than to history in general. Cambridge builds Paper 1 questions in a fixed pattern: a short four-mark part asking what happened, a six-mark part asking why, and a ten-mark part asking how far the candidate agrees. The pattern is the same whichever core content option and depth study the school has chosen, which makes it the most reliably teachable thing in the syllabus. Paper 2 is different again, built on sources about a prescribed topic that changes between series. Most lost marks sit in one of those two places.

Delivery is online, one-to-one, over live video. IB Gram does not send tutors to addresses in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain or anywhere else in the UAE; in-home visits are a service we run only in India. For 0470 the format has a cost consequence worth stating plainly: published market rates for an in-home visit in this emirate sit well above online rates for comparable tutors, because travel time is inside the fee. A family paying online rates for a specialist is buying more marking per dirham than a family paying in-home rates for a generalist who lives nearby.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

History at Cambridge IGCSE is one stage in a route that usually starts in Year 7 and ends with an AS, A Level or IB Diploma choice. Each stage below carries a different cost profile for a family planning support, which is why they are set out together.

LOWER SECAges 11-14 · Years 7-9

Cambridge Lower Secondary History

The years where source handling and paragraph structure are either built or skipped. Schools differ widely: some teach historical enquiry from Year 7, others cover history inside a combined humanities course. A student who has never been asked to judge the reliability of a source arrives in Year 10 needing a skill the 0470 source paper assumes they already have.

In Abu Dhabi the cheapest intervention a family can make is a short block of support in Year 9 rather than a panic in Year 11. Support at that stage is usually fortnightly rather than weekly, which halves the annual cost, and it buys the writing habits that the ten-mark questions pay for two years later.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE History (0470)

Two years covering a core content option, a depth study and a prescribed source topic. Paper 1 asks three structured questions built from four, six and ten-mark parts. Paper 2 is source analysis. The third component is either internally assessed coursework or the written Alternative to Coursework, chosen by the school. Content volume is the thing families underestimate.

The twentieth-century core content option used by most Abu Dhabi schools includes a key question on events in the Gulf between roughly 1970 and 2000, which is the one piece of 0470 content a student living in this region often knows something about before the lesson starts. It is also the one most likely to be taught quickly at the end of the course.

AS/AAges 16-18 · Years 12-13

Cambridge International AS & A Level History (9489)

Post-16 history drops the short-answer scaffolding entirely. Answers become extended essays judged on argument, and source work becomes evaluation in depth rather than comprehension. Students who reached a 7 at 0470 by learning content and avoiding the ten-mark questions find the first AS term unpleasant. The ones who practised judgement at 0470 arrive ready.

Not every British-curriculum school in Abu Dhabi runs A Level history every year, because cohort size decides whether the set is viable. Families who expect to continue the subject should ask in Year 10, since the answer affects both the school choice for Year 12 and whether paying for 0470 support is an investment or a one-off.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma Programme History

The route at the emirate's IB schools. DP History adds a prescribed subject with source work, two world history topics, a regional option and a research assignment. The written demand is higher than at 0470 and the historiography expectation is new. Skills built on the ten-mark questions transfer directly into DP paragraph structure.

Abu Dhabi families move between British-curriculum and IB schools more often than families in most cities, because both sit within a short drive. A 0470 student who may switch for Year 12 should spend some of their support time on judgement and argument, which carry across, rather than on memorising extra content that may not.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

0470 is taught as a set of key questions plus a depth study. The grid below names the parts a tutor plans around, with the paper each is examined in and the specific thing that costs marks in it.

Were the peace treaties of 1919 to 1923 fair?

Core content · Paper 1

Versailles and the other settlements, the aims of the leaders, and the reaction in Germany. The ten-mark question here almost always asks how far something was fair or justified. Candidates lose marks by narrating the terms rather than judging them against a stated criterion, and by forgetting that fairness is a question about perspective.

To what extent was the League of Nations a success?

Core content · Paper 1

Structure, aims, the 1920s disputes, humanitarian work, and the failures of the 1930s. The reliable mark-loser is a one-sided answer: successes listed or failures listed, with no weighing. Six-mark parts want explained reasons, not a list of bodies and their functions.

Why had international peace collapsed by 1939?

Core content · Paper 1

Appeasement, Hitler's foreign policy, the Nazi-Soviet Pact and the road to war. Strong candidates separate long-term causes from the immediate trigger and say which mattered more. Weak ones produce a chronology. The difference is worth several marks in the ten-mark part every time.

Who was to blame for the Cold War?

Core content and common prescribed topic · Papers 1 and 2

The breakdown of the wartime alliance, the conferences, Soviet expansion and American responses. This key question appears frequently as the source-paper prescribed topic as well, which doubles the value of learning it properly. Attribution of sources, not content recall, is where candidates fall short.

How effectively did the United States contain the spread of communism?

Core content · Paper 1

Korea, Cuba and Vietnam as case studies in containment. Marks go missing when a candidate tells the story of each conflict without ever answering how effective the policy was. The question is an assessment, and an assessment needs a yardstick stated in the first line.

How secure was Soviet control over Eastern Europe?

Core content · Paper 1

Hungary 1956, Czechoslovakia 1968, Solidarity in Poland and the collapse of 1989. Candidates handle the events and miss the pattern: control was maintained by force until the moment force was withdrawn. A ten-mark answer that notices that scores above one that lists uprisings.

Why did events in the Gulf matter, c.1970 to 2000?

Core content · Paper 1

The regional key question: oil, the Iranian revolution, the Iran-Iraq war and the 1990-91 Gulf conflict. Students in Abu Dhabi often have family memory and local context here, which helps once it is converted into dated, evidenced argument. It is also commonly taught last and therefore revised least.

Germany, 1918 to 1945

Depth study · Papers 1 and 4

Weimar's crises and recovery, the Nazi rise to power, control and consolidation, and life under the dictatorship. The most widely chosen depth study. The ten-mark part frequently asks whether a factor was the main reason for Nazi success, which demands weighing several factors rather than describing one.

Russia, 1905 to 1941

Depth study · Papers 1 and 4

Tsarist collapse, 1917, the civil war, Lenin's measures and Stalin's transformation. Dense with policy names that students confuse under pressure. A terminology drill is cheap and effective here, because precision on War Communism, the New Economic Policy and collectivisation is directly examinable.

The United States, 1919 to 1941

Depth study · Papers 1 and 4

The boom, the Crash, the Depression and the New Deal. Candidates tend to be strong on the 1920s and thin on the evaluation of the New Deal, which is where the ten-mark questions concentrate. Statistics are not required; dated, specific examples are.

Source analysis for the prescribed topic

Paper 2

Comprehension, comparison, reliability, usefulness, purpose and the final judgement question across a set of sources on a topic that changes between series. The single biggest error is answering what the source says when the question asks why it was published. Technique here is independent of content knowledge.

Coursework or the Alternative to Coursework

Paper 3 or Paper 4

The school chooses one. Coursework is a single internally assessed assignment on a depth study; the alternative is a timed written paper on the same material. Coursework spreads pressure across months and needs planning support; the written paper needs essay timing under exam conditions.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats cover nearly every 0470 request, and they cost very different amounts across a year. All are one-to-one and all run over live video, which is the only way IB Gram delivers tuition anywhere in the UAE.

Fortnightly essay feedback

The cheapest format that still works for history, and the right one for a Year 10 student who is coping but not scoring. The student writes one timed answer between sessions; the tutor marks it against the level descriptors and spends the session turning a level-two answer into a level-three one. Twenty-six sessions a year rather than thirty-eight.

  • One marked timed answer between each session
  • Level descriptors quoted, not paraphrased
  • Roughly half the annual cost of a weekly slot
  • Best started in Year 10, not in the exam term

Weekly one-to-one through the exam year

A fixed weekly slot in Gulf Standard Time alongside the school's scheme of work, covering content gaps, source technique and essay structure in rotation. Marking between sessions is inside the hour. This is the format most Year 11 families choose, and the one where asking what is included changes the real cost most.

  • Same slot each week, sixty minutes, Gulf Standard Time
  • Marking between sessions included rather than billed separately
  • Online over live video; IB Gram offers no in-home visits in the UAE
  • Written progress notes you can read without asking for them

Pre-series intensive on the examined parts

Six to ten weeks before a June or November series, two sessions a week built backwards from the date the exams officer confirms. One session on Paper 1 essay timing, one on the source paper. No new content is introduced after the halfway point, because at that stage breadth costs marks instead of earning them.

  • Two sessions weekly across the final six to ten weeks
  • Whole-paper timing rather than single questions
  • Built backwards from the confirmed series date
  • Pauses during the school's own mock fortnight

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Abu Dhabi

01

What an Abu Dhabi family is actually buying when they pay for a 0470 tutor

An hour of history tutoring is a container, and providers fill it differently. At one end, the hour is a conversation about the period with no written work produced or marked. At the other, the hour is the visible part of a cycle: the student writes a timed answer, the tutor marks it against the published level descriptors, the session is spent moving that answer up a level, and a note is written saying what to do next. Both can be sold as sixty minutes of 0470 tutoring at any price between AED 100 and AED 500.

For history the marking is not an extra, it is the product. A 0470 grade is a judgement about written answers, so the only reliable evidence that support is working is a sequence of marked answers getting better. Parents who ask for that sequence and are told it will be discussed verbally are being quoted for a cheaper service without being told. Parents who ask for it and receive it have something they can read themselves in ten minutes at half term, without needing to understand the Weimar constitution.

The table below is the version of this conversation we would want a parent to have with any provider, including us. Five questions, each with what a straight answer sounds like and what a deflection sounds like. Used before a quote is accepted, it turns two incomparable hourly rates into a comparison of what is in the hour. It also makes the follow-up easier: a provider who promised written notes in week one can be asked for them in week four.

The shape of 0470: core content, a depth study, and a source paper on a prescribed topic

Cambridge IGCSE History is built from three pieces that are examined separately. The first is a core content option, in practice the twentieth-century one in most Abu Dhabi schools, taught as a series of key questions about the peace treaties, the League of Nations, the collapse of peace by 1939, the Cold War, containment, Soviet control of Eastern Europe and events in the Gulf. The second is a depth study chosen by the department, commonly Germany 1918 to 1945, Russia 1905 to 1941 or the United States 1919 to 1941. The third is source analysis on a prescribed topic.

Paper 1 draws on the core content and the depth study, with each question built from parts worth four, six and ten marks. Paper 2 is the source paper, set on a prescribed topic that Cambridge changes between series, which is why last year's revision guide can be the wrong book. The remaining component is either internally assessed coursework or the written Alternative to Coursework, and the school decides which. Weightings in the table are given in relative terms because Cambridge revises the syllabus on a cycle; read the current document on cambridgeinternational.org or ask the exams officer for the series your child sits.

Two practical consequences follow. First, a tutor needs to be teaching the same core option and the same depth study as the school, and that has to be confirmed in writing rather than assumed. Second, the prescribed topic for Paper 2 must be checked for the specific series, because source technique transfers but the content does not. Both checks are free, take one email each, and prevent the most expensive mistake available in this subject, which is paying for a term of accurate teaching about the wrong period.

The four, six and ten-mark pattern, and where each part leaks marks

  • Four-mark parts want separate specific points, not a paragraph
  • Six-mark parts pay for developed reasons, not named factors
  • Ten-mark parts are marked in levels and need two sides plus a verdict
  • Time allocation per part is itself worth practising against the clock

The most useful thing a 0470 candidate can learn is that the three parts of a Paper 1 question want three different kinds of writing, and that writing the wrong kind is the commonest way to lose marks while knowing the material. The four-mark part asks what happened: it wants a set of separate, accurate, specific points, and it rewards nothing for explanation. Students who write a paragraph here spend five minutes earning two marks, then run short of time in the part that carries ten.

The six-mark part asks why. It wants explained reasons, each one developed into a consequence rather than named and abandoned. The distinction between a reason and an explained reason is where most of the mark difference sits, and it is teachable in a single session: a reason becomes an explanation the moment the sentence continues with because, which meant that, or with the result that. Students who learn to write two or three developed reasons rather than six undeveloped ones reliably gain marks on this part.

The ten-mark part asks how far the candidate agrees, and it is marked in levels. A one-sided answer, however accurate, sits in the lower levels. The structure that works is a paragraph supporting the statement with precise evidence, a paragraph challenging it with different precise evidence, and a short final judgement that commits to a position and says why. The judgement is not a summary. Candidates who write three sentences beginning with on balance, and then explain which factor mattered more and on what criterion, move up a level before their content knowledge changes at all.

04

The source paper: why strong students with good knowledge still lose marks

  • Read the attribution line before reading the source
  • Purpose questions ask why it was produced, not what it shows
  • Reliability is always reliability for a stated purpose
  • The prescribed topic changes between series, so check it per series

Paper 2 hands a candidate a set of sources on the prescribed topic and asks a sequence of questions that get progressively harder. Early questions test comprehension and comparison. Later ones test reliability, usefulness and purpose. The final question asks the candidate to use the sources to reach a judgement. The content knowledge required is real but limited; the skill required is specific and is rarely taught as its own thing in a crowded scheme of work.

The dominant error is answering what a source says when the question asks why it was produced. A cartoon published in a British newspaper in 1946 is evidence about British opinion in 1946, whoever it depicts. A speech is evidence of what a politician wanted an audience to believe. Students who have been taught to look at the attribution line before reading the source itself, and to ask who produced this, when, and for whom, start scoring on the purpose questions almost immediately.

The second error is treating reliability as a verdict rather than a question. Sources are not reliable or unreliable in the abstract; they are reliable for particular purposes. A propaganda poster is unreliable evidence of conditions and excellent evidence of what a government wanted believed. Teaching that distinction is a short piece of work with a large return, and it is the part of Paper 2 technique that transfers directly into AS and A Level or IB Diploma source work later.

05

The Gulf key question, and the content a student in Abu Dhabi should not dread

  • Local familiarity helps only once converted into dated evidence
  • Opinion about the region scores nothing without evidence
  • This key question is commonly taught last and revised least
  • Check with the school whether it has actually been covered

The twentieth-century core content includes a key question about why events in the Gulf mattered between roughly 1970 and 2000: oil and its politics, the Iranian revolution, the Iran-Iraq war, and the conflict of 1990 to 1991. For a candidate living in Abu Dhabi this is the one section of 0470 where the place names are familiar before the lesson begins, and where family memory sometimes supplies detail the textbook skips. Used properly that is an advantage on a paper where specific evidence earns the marks.

Used carelessly it is a trap. Examiners reward dated, evidenced argument, not opinion about the region, and a candidate who writes from family conviction rather than from the material can produce a confident answer that scores in the lowest level. The work in a session is to convert what the student already knows into the form the mark scheme pays for: a dated event, a named actor, a stated consequence, and a judgement about significance that could be challenged with evidence.

There is a scheduling point too. This key question commonly sits at the end of the course, which means it is taught in the weeks when the department is also running mocks and chasing coursework. In practice it is the content most often covered quickly and revised least, and a tutor working backwards from the series should check whether it has been taught at all before assuming it is secure. It appears on papers like any other key question, and a candidate who has met it for twenty minutes in April is exposed.

What 0470 tutoring costs in Abu Dhabi, in AED, and what moves the number

The figures below are published rates from other providers in the UAE market, each attributed to the provider that published it and dated October 2026, together with the rate bands in Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table. They describe the market, not IB Gram's charges. We do not publish a single headline rate for 0470 because the honest answer depends on format, frequency and how close the series is, and a number without those three things attached would mislead you.

Four variables move a quote in this emirate. Format comes first: an in-home visit prices travel into the hour, which is why market in-home bands sit above online bands for comparable tutors. Frequency comes second: fortnightly essay feedback across a school year costs roughly half what a weekly slot costs, and for a Year 10 student who is coping it is often the better buy. Scarcity is third, and history is a smaller subject than maths or the sciences, so a tutor who has marked 0470 answers is easier to find in a national pool than in one district. Timing is fourth, because demand concentrates in the two months before each series.

One further cost belongs in any realistic plan: exam entry itself, if your child is sitting as a private candidate rather than through their school. That is paid to the centre, not to a tutor, and it is the item families discover last. If the school is the exam centre, entry is handled inside school fees and the question does not arise. If it is not, ask early, because private-candidate entry deadlines fall months before the exam and some centres limit which components they will accept.

Planning 0470 support across two years without overspending

  • Fortnightly in Year 10 costs about half of weekly and starts earlier
  • A six to ten week intensive beats eight months of weekly sessions
  • Source technique can be bought as a short block on its own
  • Confirming the depth study first prevents the most expensive error

Most families buy history support in the wrong term. The instinct is to wait until a Year 11 report looks poor and then book weekly sessions for the final eight months, which is the most expensive version of the plan and the one with the least time to work. A cheaper sequence exists. Fortnightly essay feedback through Year 10 builds the writing habits the ten-mark questions pay for, at roughly half the weekly cost, and it surfaces the depth-study gaps while there is still a year to fill them.

The second half of the plan is a short intensive before the series rather than a long weekly commitment through it. Six to ten weeks of twice-weekly sessions, built backwards from the date the exams officer confirms, covers Paper 1 timing and Paper 2 technique while the school handles content revision. For many Abu Dhabi families this two-stage shape costs less across two years than weekly sessions from January of Year 11, and it puts the intensive work where it converts into marks.

Three further savings are worth naming. Siblings in the same household can sometimes share a slot if they sit the same depth study, though for a judgement-heavy subject one-to-one usually wins. A student who needs only source technique can buy a four-session block rather than a term. And a family that confirms the core option and depth study before the first session never pays for a term of teaching about the wrong period, which is the single largest avoidable cost in this subject.

08

Who may legally tutor your child in Abu Dhabi, and what a tutor must not do

  • ADEK supervises licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate
  • Press-reported ADEK ethics rules bar staff from tutoring their own students
  • The MoHRE private tuition permit is free for two years under Resolution 710 of 2023
  • A tutor marks and questions written work; the submission stays the student's own

Private schools in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain fall under the Department of Education and Knowledge, which the federal portal u.ae describes as supervising the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate. One consequence matters directly to families looking for a history tutor. Gulf News has reported that ADEK's professional-ethics rules prevent private and charter school staff from giving paid private tuition to students enrolled at their own school, and that teachers tutoring outside school hours must hold the MoHRE private tuition work permit, whose code of conduct also bars serving students affiliated with their own school. Confirm the current wording against ADEK's own policy before relying on it; in practice, do not ask your child's own class teacher to tutor them privately.

The permit itself is a federal matter. Private tuition work permits were introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, are granted free of charge for two years, and are open to registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged fifteen to eighteen. The route is MoHRE's own service, listed as Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, which shows no fee and a two working day completion time. Working without a permit attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and since no schedule of fines is published, any specific figure quoted to you should be treated as unverified. IB Gram holds no regulator accreditation and does not claim any.

Then there is the academic boundary, which matters more in history than in most subjects because so much of the assessment is written prose. A tutor may teach the period, question an argument, mark an answer against the level descriptors, and explain in detail why a paragraph sits in level two. A tutor may not supply text for a submission, rewrite a student's paragraphs, or take over a coursework assignment, because the work handed in must be the student's own throughout. We say that to the student in the first session, and your child's school will have its own rules on outside help that should be read and followed.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Abu Dhabi

Two things change by district in Abu Dhabi for a history family: the realistic start time for an evening session after the school run, and which schools dominate the local cohort and therefore which depth study your child's friends are revising. The notes below cover both.

Al Khalidiyah

Central and apartment-heavy, close to several island schools, so sessions can often start at 16:00 or 16:30. Short commutes make a twice-weekly pre-series plan workable here without the evening collapsing.

Al Zahiyah and the Corniche

Dense central district with mixed housing and short journeys to the older British-curriculum schools. Families here tend to book weekly essay feedback through the year rather than an intensive block, because the slot is easy to keep.

Al Nahyan

Established mainland-adjacent area with a wide spread of school choices, which means a single family can have children sitting different IGCSE boards. Worth confirming which syllabus each child is entered for before buying support for either.

Saadiyat Island

Cultural district with museums within reach, which matters for a history student mainly as context rather than curriculum. Session times are usually comfortable because school runs are short, and household budgets here more often stretch to a specialist rate.

Al Maryah Island

Mostly apartment living with professional households and long working hours, so later evening slots after 19:00 are common. Fortnightly essay feedback suits this pattern better than a weekly slot nobody can protect.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City and Shakhbout City

Large mainland communities with long school runs towards the island. Realistic start times are 17:30 and later, and a sixty-minute slot is easier to sustain than ninety minutes on a school night.

Al Reef

Villa community near the airport road with a long commute in both directions. Weekend sessions are more popular here than in central districts, and they work well for a subject that needs an uninterrupted hour of writing.

Al Ain

A separate school market inside the same emirate, with its own British-curriculum and bilingual schools and a different evening rhythm. A national online tutor pool matters most here, because the local pool of 0470 specialists is the smallest in the emirate.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Abu Dhabi

Established British-curriculum schools on and near the island

These are the schools whose humanities departments have been running Cambridge or Pearson history longest in the emirate, and whose cohorts are large enough to offer a choice of depth study. Which option your child's set actually studies is decided by the department, so ask before buying revision material for the wrong period.

  • The British School Al Khubairat
  • Brighton College Abu Dhabi
  • Al Mamoura Academy
  • Abu Dhabi International School
  • Merryland International School
  • Al Muna Academy

Mainland and island schools in the newer communities

Newer departments more often choose the Alternative to Coursework over internally assessed coursework, because it needs less internal standardisation. Students we support from these schools most often ask for help with the ten-mark judgement questions, which tend to be the last thing a crowded scheme of work gets to.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Confirm the option, the depth study and the prescribed topic

One email to the head of humanities: which core content option, which depth study, whether the third component is coursework or the written alternative, and which series the cohort sits. Four answers, and they determine everything that follows. Buying support before you have them is how families pay for the wrong period.

  2. 02

    Send one marked history answer

A mock essay, a class assessment, or a single ten-mark answer with the teacher's comments on it. The tutor reads it against the published level descriptors before the trial lesson, so the first thirty minutes diagnose a specific writing habit instead of covering introductions.

  3. 03

Take the free thirty-minute trial lesson

One trial per family, no card details taken to book it. The tutor works through a single part-question with your child, marks it live, and names the level it reached and the one change that would move it up. A written note follows with a view on format, frequency and the number of sessions likely to be needed.

  4. 04

Choose the format on cost as well as need

Fortnightly essay feedback, a weekly slot, or a pre-series intensive. For a Year 10 student who is coping, fortnightly usually buys more improvement per dirham. For a Year 11 candidate eight weeks out, the intensive is the only shape that fits. We will say which we think applies and why.

  5. 05

Review against marked answers every half term

Every six to eight weeks, read the marked answers in sequence and decide whether the plan still fits. If a mock or a coursework deadline is next, the plan is rebuilt backwards from that date. If the levels have stopped moving, the format changes rather than the hours increasing.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Marking is inside the hour, not an extra

History improves through marked written work, so a timed answer is read and annotated against the level descriptors between sessions and the session is spent on the rewrite. A quote that treats marking as optional is a cheaper service, and we would rather you knew that before comparing numbers.

The tutor teaches the option your child's school teaches

Core content option, depth study and prescribed topic are confirmed before the first paid session. Accurate teaching about the wrong period is the most expensive mistake available in this subject, and it is entirely preventable with one email to the department.

AED figures are attributed and dated

Every rate on this page names the provider that published it and the month it was read, because an unsourced price is just a number. Our own figure is set in a consultation after the trial lesson, with the likely session count written down rather than left open.

A national specialist pool, at online rates

History is a smaller subject than maths or the sciences, and a tutor who has marked 0470 answers may not live near Al Reef or in Al Ain. Online delivery removes distance from the hiring problem and avoids paying the travel premium published in the in-home market bands.

Progress is written down

After each session there is a short written note in a shared folder: what was marked, what level it reached, what changes next. A parent can read a term of them in ten minutes without knowing anything about the Weimar Republic, which is the point.

Availability and limits are stated up front

If no 0470 specialist has a slot that fits your week, you hear that at the enquiry stage along with the realistic alternative. Demand peaks in the eight weeks before a series, and a plain no in April is more useful than a generalist quietly substituted in May.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

How much should I expect to pay for a Cambridge IGCSE History 0470 tutor in Abu Dhabi?+

Published UAE rates run roughly AED 33-65 at the budget online end, AED 150-300 for a qualified subject tutor online, AED 180-500 for an in-home visit with travel inside the fee, and AED 200-450 or more for an exam-year specialist. Those are other providers' own figures, read in October 2026. The number that matters more is what the hour contains: for history, essay marking between sessions is the product. IB Gram sets its own figure in a consultation after a free thirty-minute trial, with the likely session count written down.

Why do two 0470 quotes in Abu Dhabi differ by three hundred dirhams an hour?+

Usually because they are selling different things under the same name. The cheaper hour is often a conversation about the period with no written work marked. The dearer hour normally includes a timed answer marked against the level descriptors, a written progress note, and a tutor who knows the specific depth study the school teaches. Format matters too, since in-home rates price travel into the fee. Ask five questions before comparing: marking, written notes, which option the tutor covers, cancelled slots, and whether the rate rises near the series.

Which depth study has my child's Abu Dhabi school chosen for 0470?+

Only the school can tell you, and it varies by department and sometimes by cohort. Germany 1918 to 1945, Russia 1905 to 1941 and the United States 1919 to 1941 are the most commonly taught. Send one email to the head of humanities asking for the core content option, the depth study, whether the third component is coursework or the written alternative, and which series the cohort sits. Those four answers decide what any tutor should be teaching, and buying support before you have them risks paying for a term about the wrong period.

What is the difference between a four-mark and a six-mark part in Paper 1?+

They want different writing. The four-mark part asks what happened and pays for separate, accurate, specific points with no explanation attached; a paragraph here wastes time that the ten-mark part needs. The six-mark part asks why and pays for developed reasons, where each reason continues into its consequence. Two or three explained reasons score better than six named ones. Learning to tell the two formats apart is a single session's work and it is the cheapest mark gain available in the whole syllabus.

How does the ten-mark how far do you agree question get marked?+

In levels, which is why accurate one-sided answers stall. The structure that works is a paragraph supporting the statement with precise dated evidence, a paragraph challenging it with different precise evidence, then a short judgement that commits to a position and states the criterion it is judged on. The judgement is not a summary of the two paragraphs. Candidates who adopt that shape usually move up a level before their content knowledge changes, which is why it is the first thing a session addresses in an exam year.

Can a 0470 tutor help if they have not taught our exact prescribed source topic?+

Partly, and you should know which part. Source technique is largely independent of content: reading the attribution line first, distinguishing what a source says from why it was produced, treating reliability as reliability for a stated purpose. All of that transfers to any prescribed topic. What does not transfer is the contextual knowledge needed for the final judgement question. We would rather match a tutor who covers both, and if that means a fortnight's wait for the right person we will say so at the enquiry stage.

Is fortnightly history tutoring enough, or does my child need weekly sessions?+

For a Year 10 student who is coping but not scoring, fortnightly essay feedback is often the better purchase: one timed answer written between sessions, marked against the descriptors, with the session spent on the rewrite. It costs roughly half what a weekly slot costs across a year and it starts a year earlier, which matters more. Weekly makes sense in an exam year, or where content gaps are wide enough that marking alone cannot close them. We will say which we think fits after the trial lesson.

When should an Abu Dhabi family start paying for 0470 support?+

Earlier and lighter beats later and heavier. Fortnightly support from the middle of Year 10 builds the writing habits the ten-mark questions reward and exposes depth-study gaps while there is a year left to fill them. The common pattern, waiting for a poor Year 11 report and then booking weekly sessions for eight months, is the most expensive version and the one with least time to work. The cheapest effective shape is light in Year 10 and intensive in the final two months.

Does the Gulf key question actually come up in 0470 exams?+

It is one of the key questions in the twentieth-century core content, so it can appear like any other. The practical problem for Abu Dhabi candidates is that it commonly sits at the end of the scheme of work and is therefore taught quickly and revised least. Local familiarity with the region helps only once it is converted into dated, evidenced argument: a named actor, a dated event, a stated consequence, and a judgement that could be challenged. Opinion about the region, however strongly held, scores nothing on its own.

Can my child's own history teacher tutor them privately in Abu Dhabi?+

Gulf News has reported that ADEK's professional-ethics rules bar private and charter school staff from paid private tuition of students enrolled at their own school, and that the MoHRE private tuition permit carries a code of conduct that also prevents serving students affiliated with the tutor's own school. Verify the current wording against ADEK's own policy document before relying on it. The practical answer is to look outside the school for paid support, and to use the class teacher for the free help they are already paid to give.

Do we also have to pay exam entry fees for 0470?+

Only if your child is sitting as a private candidate rather than through their school. Where the school is the Cambridge exam centre, entry is handled within school fees and the question does not arise. Private candidates pay the centre directly, and the amount depends on the centre, so ask for it in writing. Entry deadlines fall months before the exam itself, and some centres limit which components they accept, so this is a question for October rather than April if a private entry is likely.

How do history sessions fit around an Abu Dhabi school run and after-school sport?+

Slots are set in Gulf Standard Time around your week rather than a tutor's time zone. Families in Mohammed Bin Zayed City, Al Reef and Shakhbout City usually take 17:30 or later because of the commute to island schools, while central districts such as Al Khalidiyah and Al Zahiyah can often start at 16:00. Weekend slots suit villa communities with long drives and work well for history, because one uninterrupted hour of writing is worth more than two interrupted half hours.

Will sessions move during Ramadan, and does that change the cost?+

The slot moves and the price does not. School hours shorten, afternoons stop being usable for sustained writing, and most families ask for a later evening slot after Iftar. We move the weekly or fortnightly slot for the month rather than suspending it, because history needs continuity in written practice more than it needs a pause. If a series falls shortly afterwards, the pre-exam plan is rebuilt around the shortened days, often as shorter and more frequent sessions rather than long ones.

Does paying for a tutor mean my child will get a higher history grade?+

No one can promise that, and anybody who does should be treated with suspicion. What tutoring can reliably provide is marked written work, feedback in the language of the level descriptors, and a plan built backwards from a confirmed exam date. Grades move when a student changes how they write, which takes weeks of practice they have to do themselves. The honest measure of whether the money is working is the sequence of marked answers: if the levels are not moving by half term, the plan should change.

What happens if no Cambridge 0470 specialist is available when we enquire?+

You are told before any payment, with the realistic options named. Demand concentrates in the eight to ten weeks before each series, so an April enquiry for a June exam has fewer choices than one made in October. The alternatives we would offer are a humanities tutor with strong source and essay-marking experience, a start date a fortnight later with the specialist who covers your exact depth study, or a short technique block instead of a weekly plan. Substituting a generalist without saying so is not one of them.

Get the four answers, then get a quote worth comparing

Before you pay anyone for Cambridge IGCSE History 0470 support, send one email to your child's head of humanities and ask for the core content option, the depth study, whether the third component is coursework or the written alternative, and the series the cohort sits. Then send us one marked history answer and book the free thirty-minute trial lesson. The tutor marks a part-question live, names the level it reached and the single change that would lift it, and follows up in writing with a format, a frequency and an estimated number of sessions. If fortnightly is enough, we will tell you that rather than sell you weekly.
